Scania has bought Haydock Commercial Vehicles in a move it said secured the Swedish truck maker’s UK dealer and service network for the future
The deal means it has acquired Haydock’s six branches in the North West
Widnes and Deeside and it also means Haydock’s owner Simon Dykes will say farewell to the business he built up over the last 22 years
Scania UK MD Chris Newitt said: “Today is a special occasion
by securing our dealer and service network for the future
“I’m very pleased to be welcoming our Haydock colleagues to join our Scania GB family and hope we will continue to learn
The deal will see Haydock’s six branches located in the North West and its team join forces with Scania GB’s
Dykes described the decision as “the end of an era” and added: “I will be saying goodbye to a business and brilliant colleagues I cherish most
I know in my heart that both businesses will reap the benefits
Scania added that it was business as usual for its branches and workforce operationally
with the only changes being Newitt succeeding Dykes as chairman and Scania GB CFO Andreas Ödebrink and business operations director Emma Wilkins joining the board
An “unpredictable” environment saw Scania Group make a “soft start” to 2025
with sales revenues declining by 11% and vehicle deliveries tumbling by 16%
Scania has delivered the first of 165 trucks to Bidcorp as part of the foodservice provider’s strategy to strengthen its fleet
Scania said it had agreed to buy bankrupt Northvolt’s battery division and it would be a partner to the truck maker’s business unit Power Solutions

It’ll be hard to bear for Dan Skelton but the final day of the jumps season at Sandown is all about Willie Mullins who will remain long odds-on to claim back-to-back trainers’ championships even if Skelton picks up a slice of the prize money before his Irish counterpart even has a runner on Saturday
Four horses gunning for Mullins in the bet365 Oaksey House Chase and 10 of the 20 runners in the day’s feature bet365 Gold Cup Handicap Chase is a formidable assault
and after all that last year’s champion is responsible for four of the 10 horses declared in the concluding handicap hurdle for good measure
There’s even a chance the diminutive Il Etait Temps could get in on the act against Jonbon in the bet365 Celebration Chase
but I suspect there is a bit of the title race hype factored into his overnight price around the 6/1 mark
No Irish runner at all in the bet365 Josh Gifford Novices’ Handicap Chase but a fascinating contender in MAHONS GLORY
and I can’t really understand why he’s available at such a big price
Newmarket trainer Dylan Cunha’s only jumps horse to date
he’s a perfect two from two for this yard since moving from Pat Neville and the way he popped away around Stratford before winning as he liked under 12 stone marked him down as a really progressive chaser
He’s only had a handful of starts in this sphere (was 2-18 over hurdles) but is clearly thriving and the last win appeared to come in spite of the two fences on the side of the track being bypassed
Jumping looks his forte if anything and I’m really looking forward to seeing what this horse can do at Sandown
especially as the latest generous-looking 3lb rise means he’s still only 1lb higher in the weights than when second to Hyland at Southwell last June
Mahons Glory has only really got Pic Roc for company on the Timeform pace map and if that one jumps like he did at Ayr the other week
then it could turn into a bit of a solo up front for Lee Edwards on the selection
You’re almost forced to be with or against Mullins in the bet365 Gold Cup and I just don’t think any of his horses represent anything in the way of value
I can see Dancing City taking a slide in the betting but he seems unlikely to hit double-figure odds which would interest me a little
and I’m prepared to think outside the box a bit in order to eke one out a bigger price
KING’S THRESHOLD is competing from 8lb out of the weights and
has a question mark over his stamina for this kind of trip
but they are the obvious negatives out of the way and aside from that there seems to be loads to recommend him
Trainer Emma Lavelle must have been tearing her hair out when this gorgeous-looking son of Yeats wasn’t quite seeing his races out properly earlier in his career
but the fitting of the tongue-tie has worked wonders and he’s now three from three since it was first applied
The horse also underwent wind surgery prior to the second leg of that hat-trick at Warwick in February
and it was hard not to be impressed by how well he won at Newbury last month too
he’s effectively running off 142 on Saturday so it’s a significantly taller order
but who knows quite where the ceiling of ability lies now he’s on a roll and full of confidence
Just looping back to the potential stamina doubts briefly
it’s definitely worth underlining the fact that he’s closely related to Captain Cattistock and Bretney
while winning this would be a fitting end to the campaign for his rider Ben Jones as he’s been one of the success stories of the season
Jones has a very tidy Sandown record to keep up as well
having had four winners from just 14 rides on the chase course here over the years (2-6 in current season)
I’d have liked this horse’s claims in a more typical renewal and have to stand by him at current odds which are inflated accordingly on account of the army from Closutton
including the slightly annoying Grangeclare West
who is rated 168 and acts as a bit of a spoiler up at the top
Away from the jumping action, DIVINE LIBRA looks too big a price in the Try Unibet’s New Same Race Multis Handicap at Haydock
it was second time out that was the time to catch him last spring and with Chester’s big meeting just around the corner – something he’s bound to have on the agenda again – perhaps it would be wise to tread carefully on seasonal debut here
but it’s worth recalling he did win on his three-year-old comeback in 2023
and that’s not the only thing going for him
Trainer Charlie Hills is in pretty good form
while the prevailing ground looks right up his street as he wouldn’t want it too quick
The low draw counted against him first time up in a sprint at Newbury last April and not only did he deliver on that fairly promising effort when winning well on the Roodee in May
he twice recorded strong figures in major seven-furlong handicaps at Newmarket and back at Chester later in the campaign
Currently rated just 1lb higher than for the second of those efforts in late-August
he hung his chance away and reportedly lost a shoe when down the field on his last run towards the back-end of the year at Ascot
and I still think there’s scope for further improvement from the nicely-bred son of Dark Angel
whose progeny so often go on and get better with age
A central draw this weekend given Jason Watson all the options he’d like and if he can just sit off the like pace-makers Myal and Gorak through the early stages then Divine Libra could be in business as
there isn’t much competition at all for the lead

There was a walkover at Haydock on Wednesday after two of the three declared runners were withdrawn due to the going
The Gary and Josh Moore-trained Hermino AA had made the near 250-mile trip to the racecourse before being taken out while Galunggung
was also taken out before the 2m4f novice handicap chase worth £15,000
The pair did not run due to the going which is good
good to soft in places on the chase course and good on the hurdles course
It meant Yealand was able to pick up the first prize of £7,922 for Jennie Candlish while Sean Quinlan punched the air ironically after cantering past the post
Clerk of the course Dan Cooper told Racing TV: "Tracking declarations it didn't look so strong then and a few late ones came in
It's a spring day and there's been watering on the track
It's dried up which it was at risk of doing
"I'm glad they've walked it and had a look at the track
They weren't sure and they've probably done the right thing for their situation
Cooper admitted grass growth had been a struggle at Haydock but the track had undergone a lot of work since its Grand National Trial day fixture on February 15
"We've been extremely busy," he added
"On Grand National Trial day we had a lot of feedback about the turf and comments that it didn't look the part
but we haven't abandoned a fixture and we've had more runners than in recent years
"It'll look like a different site for the Easter fixture but it's a perfectly safe surface
It's good and that's only suitable for some in jump racing now
It's perfectly comfortable but doesn't suit everyone."

"That's 25 to go," he told Racing TV
"I've got Kelso and Hexham coming up
It's great to get a winner at Haydock as it's hard to get one at a Grade 1 track
"Jarrive De Mee was coming back in trip from two and a half [miles]
He's got a high cruising speed but he surprised me
I didn't think he'd win that easily

Racing correspondent Sam Turner bring us his racing tips for Saturday with a focus on the meetings at Musselburgh and Haydock
I would like to be emailed about offers, events and updates from The Independent. Read our Privacy notice
Wise Eagle boasts a tremendous record around the contours of Musselburgh and could be poised to repeat his 2023 victory in the Virgin Bet Queen’s Cup (3.35pm) on Saturday
The selection has run six times at Saturday’s venue under both codes
with the sole defeat sustained by a short head over this course and distance four years ago
His victory in this race two years ago was achieved in the hands of Danny Tudhope and it was perhaps notable the eight-year-old recorded a marked career best over hurdles with a fine effort behind the resurgent Bashful at Kelso
a performance which proves he’s in good heart at present
Hopefully, that run has put Wise Eagle on point fitness wise as well as preserving his handicap mark ahead of this event and the prices on offer with betting sites offering four places look very fair given his track record
fellow Musselburgh lover Gweedore (2.25pm) could be another to roll back the years in the Virgin bet Silver Arrow Handicap
the selection is unlikely to find any improvement
but he ran a blinder last week behind Our Havana and it’s interesting that connections reach for the cheekpieces for the first time
Gweedore has run 14 times at the Scottish venue
winning five times and being placed on seven other occasions
he takes on lesser exposed rivals who are lightly raced – most notably Waleefy who is sure to improve and progress this summer – but his track experience will be handy
and he looks a fair each-way play with one betting app offering four places
backward type who has taken time to mature
it would be unwise to let Waleefy go unbacked on his first start as a four-year-old off what looks a workable mark of 88 for a stable in red-hot form
but he could be a class above his rivals in time and possessed the pace to win over six furlongs as a three-year-old so is worth a saver on a track which favours speed
Training partnership David & Nicola Barron landed the Virgin Bet Scottish Sprint Cup two years ago with Zarzyni and they could repeat the trick courtesy of Jer Batt (3pm) who appears nicely drawn to strike for the North Yorkshire outfit
the son of Dragon Pulse wound up last season with a career best effort at Doncaster in October and is a sprinter with a good record fresh as successes after 47
49 and 112-day track absences would suggest
Over at Haydock, An Taillur (2.40pm) has become dangerously well handicapped now he has dropped to a mark of just 125 and he must surely get the good ground he craves here. With some horse racing betting sites offering three places
he makes some appeal for a yard going well at present
Duke Of Deception (3.50pm) should gain some compensation for a couple of commendable recent efforts in a four-runner handicap which may not take a great deal of winning
It’s easy to get carried away during busy sporting weekends like Easter
but it’s vital bettors stick to a budget and no matter the circumstances
It’s particularly important not to get carried if you receive a casino bonus or any free bets

Work is expected to start on site in autumn 2025
pending the approval of a reserved matters planning application
The first homes are due to be offered to buyers in early 2026
said: “The outline permission established the principle of development on the site and we’re now drawing up our reserved matters application
which we aim to submit to St Helens Council in early 2025
“There has been a lack of new homes built in the Haydock area in recent years so this development will provide much-needed new homes in an excellent location.”
He added: “We have recently acquired land at Omega in Warrington where our reserved matters application for 153 properties is expected to be decided in early 2025
said: “HSL negotiated planning permission for much-needed new homes on this former Green Belt land adding to our ever-growing portfolio of successful projects across the country
“We are delighted that Anwyl Homes saw the potential to create a high-quality development and moved swiftly to purchase the site.”
He continued: “HSL will continue to work with other landowners in the North West and elsewhere to add significant value to their landholdings.”
