who has been an Army chaplain for the past 18 years
will be licensed for his new role by the bishop in January
he then trained for ordination in Oxford before a curacy in the Black Country
He became a religious affairs producer for his local BBC radio station while also working as a vicar in Shropshire
From there he moved to Suffolk and was rector to five very different rural and semi-rural churches
He became a chaplain in the British Army in 2006
serving with a range of mainly infantry regiments
He and his wife Pam were posted to Kenya for three years
before their most recent post on Thorney Island
The couple have four adult children and four grandchildren
with the newest having arrived only in October
He said: “I am excited to have been chosen to become the interim minister on Hayling Island
The focus of the work will be to help the parishes become settled in how they best work together and then look forward to the future
“Hayling Island is not somewhere that I know well
but already I can see a vibrant community that has seen a lot of change over the years
If the walls of the three buildings could talk
they would speak of people through the ages coming to worship
Through all the changes the really important things have remained constant
“Serving with the British Army as a chaplain has been a privilege
Having completed a number of operational tours with the infantry
it quickly became clear that chaplains are both needed and welcomed in every theatre where the army works
“We have settled in Southsea and will most likely make that our home when retirement proper finally calls
“I can look back with hindsight and see that God has gifted me with a specific set of skills that may come in useful in this new role – from my time in industry working on large-scale databases through parish ministry to serving in the Army
Those skills are ready to serve the churches on Hayling as they look forward to an exciting future.”

Beach hut owners on Hayling Island have erupted in fury after Havant Borough Council doubled their annual fees as local accuse authorities of trying to force them out of their seaside retreats
Liberal Democrat and Green Party coalition
has increased licence fees from £600 to over £1,000 for local residents
while non-residents saw just a 1.7 per cent rise
Owners have slammed the council for assuming they must be "really rich" for having the wooden structures
Many claim they have inherited their huts or owned them for years
with some having family connections to the beach huts dating back to the 1950s
People relax in the autumn sun on the beach in Hayling Island
The 50 per cent increase has left many questioning whether they can afford to keep their huts
who purchased her hut with her husband Robert and friends in 2009
received a letter this week informing her of the new £1,036 annual fee
"It's been a real shock that it's gone up that much," she said
"I don't understand the reasoning – we get nothing for that money."
The Dalleys originally bought their hut for around £5,000
Jayne added: "We have to pay for all the maintenance on the huts
with out-of-town hut owners seeing their fees rise by just 1.7 per cent
The council said the aim was "to move towards greater alignment of the beach hut licence fee between residents and non-residents of the borough"
"We don't know if they just think because we have got a beach hut we're really rich
Hayling Island is one of the cheapest places to buy a beach hut," Jayne continued
"A lot of people have had them a long time
It doesn't mean to say we are rich."
She contrasted their modest huts with those in Mudeford and Bournemouth
The Hayling Island huts are "not glamorous"
described the increase as a "hell of a hike" and "pretty shocking"
A spokesman from Havant Borough Council told The Telegraph: "The council has increased the licence fee for borough residents of privately owned and council-owned beach huts by 50 per cent this financial year
"The aim is to move towards greater alignment of the beach hut licence fee between residents and non-residents of the borough
The charges apply from April 1 2025."
Caravan holidays are definitely having a moment
Stacey Solomon and Joe Swash took a mobile home to Scotland at half term
and Kyle Walker (reportedly) took wife Annie Kilner to a park in Wales to say ‘sorry for…everything’
If actual Premier League footballers are vacaying in ‘vans
We stayed in a four berth, hot tub, lodge with views of the nature reserve because we are fancy. And it’s HUGE, I mean seriously big, the photos on the website do not do justice to just how big it is. Okay, it doesn’t rival a suite at the Four Seasons, but it certainly gives Centre Parcs a run for its money and makes a Eurocamp home look like a doll’s house
Not that we really needed it for a four-night break
and the walk-in wardrobe in the master bedroom was an especial treat
it also had an ensuite with a bath (a bath!)
The kids’ room had two large single beds and a TV which they were delighted about because they don’t have one in their bedrooms at home
The kitchen was roomy and came with a microwave
plus – and this is my personal bugbear – there’s only one
There is a dishwasher, thank goodness, and two tablets provided, so make sure you pack some as well as some toilet roll (top tip)
I wish I’d packed some laundry tablets as there’s a washing machine in the vestibule (you heard) and – of course – you never pack enough of the right things for the kids and it would have been helpful to run some things through the wash
The main attraction of the home for my kids was the hot tub and it was glorious
even in a really pretty actually half term
A member of staff came to check it each day
and it was probably the highlight of the children’s holiday
there’s a small swimming pool that’s free to use but MAKE SURE YOU BOOK SWIMMING
We did it two weeks before we went via the Away Resorts app and lots of slots had already been booked
Sessions last for just under an hour and there’s a small family changing room
we would have gone to the pool and back in towels as it’s pretty tight for space in there
My kids also loved the non-bookable activities especially the kids’ house party in the evening that my toddler was obsessed with (shout out to staff member Katy who ran the whole shebang)
My seven-year-old had to be dragged away from the football pitch
that is handily right next to outside bar seating
and they were both wild for the indoor soft play area
which was not an issue for us and added to a feeling of security around letting the children play outside
with huge expanses of sky and…birds… about
They weren’t pigeons though and I liked them
You can order food and drink to your table in the Green Room
where the kids’ disco and activities are held
But our preferred place for a drink was The Missing Squirrel
that’s all bottle green statement wallpaper
so we had a Tesco shop delivered to the van
We took public transport to get to the site
it was easy to get to from Havant station by bus
and we took buses around the island when we left the complex
And we were very sad to leave on our last day
Looking for a holiday home that's a little more luxurious
spend it at Away Resorts - it'll still be a bargain in the face of Centre Parcs
Every Away Resorts park is within areas of natural beauty
national parks and beaches – with every village having its own unique sense of charm and adventure
Price: £125+ per nightwww.awayresorts.co.uk

Annexe of a five-bed house in Hayling Island cannot be used as a separate dwelling as it does not have amenities fit for living and ‘not reasonable’ for guests to use the property’s pool room
Hani and Diana Gabra bought The Willows in Hayling Island
believing that they had purchased two separate dwellings as there was the property
As well as the games room the property also features an outdoor swimming pool
At the time of the purchase the annexe did not have the suitable amenities to be classed as a dwelling

Doorbell camera footage has captured the moment three masked men are seen attempting to break into a number of homes in Hayling Island
The gang can be seen peering into the window of a family home just after 5am
After approaching the front door and ripping the doorbell off the wall
before moving on to another home just doors away
Residents have told ITV Meridian they are worried after a recent spate of burglaries have taken place around the Island
Jason McKeon purchased them to help him recover from health issues and said he and his wife had used them to improve their wellbeing
Speaking to ITV Meridian he said: "You don't think that it is going to happen to you
"You assume that you've got all the boxes ticked but of course there are other things that you could do - what we have done
"We thought that the security we had was sufficient
The bikes were locked and we had the protection on the house."
Havant Borough Councillor for Hayling East says it's concerning for those that live there
"People think of Hayling Island as a a very quiet place and not a lot of things happen here," she said
"But actually there had been a noticeable increase in anti-social behaviour
somebody got their car stolen and it was written off during the theft so they have lost their car even though it was brought back to them
"People are worried it's not going to be an isolated incident
it is going to happen again because people know they can get away with it."
Councillor Netty Shepherd says many residents are worried following the recent spate of burglaries
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary have been studying CCTV footage from a spike in burglaries around the island which included a stolen Fiat 500
a pair of ray-bans and £7000 in damages to an outbuilding
A police spokesperson said: "We’re currently reviewing CCTV in the area
but believe the reports are linked as three men wearing dark clothing with face coverings were seen on a number of occasions
"The following has been reported us as taking palace between midnight and around 5am:
Damage totaling £7,000 to an outbuilding on Webb Lane
Two E-Bikes were stolen from a property on Southwood Road
A Treadmill was damaged in a garage on St Benedict Road
Someone tried to break into a house on Nutbourne Road
Three people were disturbed breaking into a garage on Herons Way
A Fiat 500 was stolen on Copse Lane and later recovered on Southwood Road
Ray-Ban sunglasses were stolen from a BMW on Herons Way
A car was broken into on Wheatlands Avenue
A Volkswagen Tiguan was broken into on Oyster Close and a purse and iPad were stolen
"Enquiries are ongoing to establish the movements of the suspects and to develop a more detailed description
"We are reviewing CCTV and doorbell footage in the area
but if you have any footage of suspicious activity overnight on Hayling Island that you think can help our enquiries we want to hear from you."

Former Ryder Cup player, Peter Dawson, who represented Great Britain & Ireland in 1977, continues his series of reviewing golf courses for Golfshake, this time visiting Hayling Golf Club
On the few occasions I have played Hayling Island I have enjoyed this lovely links course
On arrival with a cup of coffee in hand gazing out across the Solent at the half dozen large container ships anchored awaiting to enter Portsmouth or Southampton
some 50 years ago when at the time there was a big boom in imports
there was a city of ships moored in the bay
We all had stories to tell about the Sunshine Tour
playing on Browns (their substitute for greens) which was an oil and sand mixture
Hayling Island is for us seniors a lovely course to play
Off the white tees it measures 6,529 yards
the ball runs those extra few yards.
What better way to start the round with the first hole
179 yards naturally into the prevailing wind
On a calm day it can be described as an easy opener but catch it on a day into the wind it can be a driver
Getting to the 5th hole is another short hole of interest
165 yards in length with the green the length of a cricket pitch and not much wider
The course meanders through the heather and gorse
we can enjoy with anticipation what a good links golf course throws at us.
Reaching the par 3 11th hole 152 yards long
it is relatively easy but generally playing across the prevailing wind
In my opinion the 12th is the toughest and best hole on the course
A slightly blind tee shot with the marker post showing us the way
with the green visible some 462 yards in the distance
it would not look out of place on a course of Royal Birkdale’s standards!
driver in hand and a gung ho attitude we would go for the green ensuring we favoured the right side because of the OOB running down the left of the fairway
It was either on the green or take our chances with a chip from the wispish grass from the right side
the second shot for us older mortals will be a blind shot of perhaps a 100 yards
there is a deep pot bunker on the left of the green that must be avoided otherwise it might be a card wrecker
and there is out of bounds not too far away from the putting surface behind the green.
the nearer we get we start noticing the clubhouse in the distance majestically appearing over the gorse
It feels like approaching the bridge of a ship
four hours of sheer delight playing this course in the summer sun
although I can imagine in the cold winter this could be hell to be on like the majority of links courses.
The 17th is another fine par 3 equalling the first in length at 180 yards
I reckon if we could score no more than 12 on these four par 3s we must have an acceptable card going
at least it should merit a congratulatory tipple in the clubhouse
Hayling Island must be a big pull for the discerning golfer from areas as far afield as Salisbury in the West
Windsor in the North and Leatherhead in South East London
I think due to this it is never an easy course to reserve a tee time
