Gainsborough Trinity heaped more misery on visiting Hebburn Town
Declan Howe netting twice either side of Fraser Preston’s strike to climb second in NPL Scoring Charts
while Hebburn continued their dramatic slide towards the drop zone
The defeat leaving the Hornets five points clear of fourth bottom Matlock
was able to name an unchanged starting eleven for Hebburn’s first ever visit to the Kal Group Stadium
The only change in the matchday sixteen seeing Bailey Conway (on his return from suspension) replacing Sisa Tuntulwana
Jordan Helliwell was first to go close for the Holy Blues
The industrious midfielder just unable to find the far corner of Daniel Cameron’s goal
The move coming shortly after a prolonged spell of Trinity ball
Javelle Clarke dinking the ball into Helliwell
who allowed the ball to run across his body as he turned on the edge of the box
after more patient build up play that started in defence
Will Lancaster and fellow centre back Charlie Hickingbottom comfortable on the ball and looking to build from the back
and looking to feed Declan Howe with clever little balls
harshly denied the opportunity to flow to a conclusion
as Butroid looked to recycle the ball from the Gainsborough left
Fraser Preston then worked hard to keep the ball in play
while dragging centre back Michael Turner into an area he wouldn't want to be
Finding Lewis Butroid - but he couldn't generate enough power in his effort
resulting in a routine stop for the 'keeper
Howe’s movement proved too much for the visitors
and the Gainsborough’ ten calmly lifted the ball past the advancing Cameron to open the scoring
Bobby Johnson then released Howe down the left
The visitors hurriedly clearing their lines
only to find themselves back under pressure almost immediately
Jackson was caught as he looked to continue his run
Howe stinging the palms of Cameron – from Clarke’s ball – only to see play pulled back for the foul on Jackson
Johnson’s subsequent freekick deflected over the bar and onto the roof of the net
Jackson then swung in a cross from the left
And Cameron appeared to carry the ball over his own line – only for the Assistant to keep his flag down
The Blues continued to mount pressure on Hebburn
Dec Howe had the choice of bodies in the box
and looked to square the ball for one of the men up in support
but Butty wasn’t to add to his goal scoring tally – this time
His scuffed effort dealt with by the Hebburn defence
A weak defensive header found the Trinity central midfielder
and struck the dipping volley a yard or so
Preston and Johnson then linked to good effect in the middle of the park
before Preston picked out Howe inside the box
still searching for his first goal in Gainsborough colours
But Simpson’s scuffed effort didn’t trouble the Hebburn ‘keeper
who was then equal to Preston’s drive from the edge of the box
who cleverly played the ball inside to Preston
Trinity had created the better of the openings in the first period – but only had the one goal to show for it
Half Time: Gainsborough Trinity 1 Hebburn Town 0
Experienced centre back Michael Turner rising highest to power home from Liam Noble’s corner kick
He combined with Butroid to fashion a shooting chance
The clever invention not far away from reaping rewards for the top scorer
David Robson then pulled off a flying stop to keep out Joe Posthill as he cut in off the right
to send an effort arrowing to Robson’s top right hand corner
The former Hull City goalkeeper springing into action
The Hornets felt they had cause for a penalty shortly after
with Ashley Jackson the closest Trinity man in attendance
Russ Wilcox’s men regrouped & with half an hour remaining
A cut back from the byline was sent narrowly wide of his own upright by ‘keeper Dan Cameron
before an almighty goalmouth scramble was hacked clear
and Will Lancaster had to superbly execute a sliding challenge to fairly halt Gomes in his tracks
timing his tackle to perfection to the approval of the Carlilse Street terrace
Preston then restored the Trinity advantage
nonchalantly wafting the ball into the former Scottish Youth international’s path
Javelle Clarke then looked to catch Cameron off his line with an audacious effort
Preston’s clever cutback finding Bailey Conway
The second half substitute unable to adjust himself in time
Robson rarely troubled in goal for the Blues
Save for a straightforward gather from a shot from distance
before cooly celebrating as the Easter Bunny
giving the Blues a two goal cushion for the remainder of the five allotted minutes
Blocking a couple efforts from around the edge of the box
as the visitors lacked that killer sting in the tail
while the visitors dropping perilously close to the relegation trapdoor
The transformation in the two sides fortunes

It’s back to the North East this weekend as Mickleover face their penultimate away game of the season at Hebburn
Earlier in the season our hosts looked like play-off contenders
but it’s now seven games without a win following their 2-1 home defeat to Ilkeston last Saturday
For Mickleover it’s a must win to stay in the Premier Division mathematically
A Tom Peers double and a late George Glendon finish sealed Chester’s route to the third qualifying round of the FA Cup with a comfortable victory over Hebburn Town
The visitors had the best chance of the early exchanges at the Deva
when Elyh Harrison lost the ball under pressure which gifted Robbie Spence a chance to lob the keeper
but his looped effort landed safely on the roof of the net for the Blues
Dan Turner and Tom Peers both managed to fashion opportunities in the 17th minute
but their shots were blocked by a resilient visiting defence
That duo led to Chester’s opening goal in the 29th minute
when Turner shut down a defensive clearance and fed the ball to Peers who slotted a drilled finish past Kieran Hunter into the bottom corner
The momentum followed after the goal for the Blues
with multiple chances that could have doubled the lead before the interval
Charlie Caton shot low into the hands of Hunter from just outside the area
before Peers almost added to his tally when his shot from inside the box was deflected wide
Caton rose well moments later but his headed effort was cleared off the line by Matty Elsdon
The Hornets highlighted their defensive resilience but the Seals grew into the half and deservedly went into the break ahead
Calum McIntyre’s men continued to create chances at the start of the second period
going close through Dan Turner’s powerful strike following a clever corner routine which involved Iwan Murray and Harrison Burke
The visitors created very little in the second period and failed to threaten Harrison despite the early resilience shown
Our number seven grabbed his fourth goal in four games with ten minutes remaining
when another composed close-range finish gifted the Blues the two-goal cushion that we were after
The final ten minutes saw yellow cards handed out to both managers for their reaction to a clash between Daniel Moore and Ben Pollock
from which the Hebburn man was also booked
George Glendon sealed the victory in injury-time when he rolled Chester’s third into the bottom corner and added some icing on top of our second qualifying round success
It marks a fifth home win on the bounce and a third home clean sheet on the spin

Our 2024/25 FA Cup journey commences this weekend
as we welcome seventh tier outfit Hebburn Town to CH1
The prize for the victor will be a place in the third qualifying round of the prestigious competition and Calum McIntyre and his players will be hoping to emulate or even improve on their domestic success from last season
The Seals were desperately close to reaching the second round proper as they were narrowly defeated by National League side York City in a replay
The original tie resulted in a 0-0 stalemate at the Deva stadium
with the Blues frustrating their fifth tier opponents by rendering them to very little clear-cut chances
The replay at the York Community stadium saw the Minstermen race into a two goal lead through a Lennell John-Lewis brace
but our captain George Glendon halved the deficit with a ruthless finish after being skilfully played through by an incisive Harrison Burke pass with the outside of his foot
Despite the equaliser proving to be elusive
subsequently resulting in exit from the competition
the players made the fans and club immensely proud
Hebburn Town currently sit in third place in the Northern Premier League Premier Division
only three points behind Robbie Savage’s Macclesfield who occupy top spot
The Hornets earned promotion into the seventh tier last campaign by being crowned Champions of the Northern Premier League Division One East
The team hailing from Tyne and Wear have enjoyed a successful spell over the last five years
as they also lifted the 2019/20 edition of the FA Vase
but bizarrely played the final in May 2021 due to the pandemic
Olly Martin’s dramatic winner was the decisive goal in their 3-2 win over their North East counterparts Consett at Wembley
Daniel Moore has been in the dugout at the Hebburn Sports and Social ground since the beginning of the 2022/23 season
Moore’s biggest achievement was captaining Spennymoor Town to the FA Vase final
but Moore was unfortunately injured for the final at the hallowed turf
The former defender then made almost 500 appearances for Shildon FC and was named player manager in 2017
He guided the Shells to promotion alongside his current employers in 2020/21
Paul Van Zandliet had a dream debut as he received the Player of the Match accolade for his performance against Bamber Bridge
The industrious midfielder signed last week from Ashington and he scored his new club’s second goal in their 5-1 rout against Brig
the 23-year-old spent five years at North Shields where he made almost a century of appearances for the Robins

October marked the first year of operation for our award-winning Viking Energy Network Jarrow (VENJ) and so it was fitting that it scooped another prestigious accolade in the Public Sector Project category at the RICS (Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors) awards
VENJ harnesses low-grade heat from the River Tyne and exports it to council-owned buildings
It is the first of its kind in the country
October also marked the opening of the Paul Younger Centre
which uses air source heat pumps to provide renewable heating and hot water to Durham Court residential block and Hebburn Central leisure facility
The Centre is a wonderful tribute to the late Professor Paul Younger
who was born in the town and went on to become one of the world's foremost experts in his field
We were delighted that Paul's family and friends were able to join the Mayor for the official opening
The two schemes are delivering a combined annual reduction of almost 1,400 tonnes in carbon emissions
We also started construction on the development of a cutting-edge new Extra Care scheme in Hebburn town centre
is a partnership between northern housing association Karbon Homes and South Tyneside Council
It's exciting to see work getting underway on this development
which will allow not just our older people
but younger adults with care needs to live in the community with care and support
We know this is so important to our residents
who have told us that they want to be able to continue to live independently in the community for as long as possible rather than going into residential care
We made further progress with our children's homes this month
All three locations are now back on site and will be completed by late summer next year
We are working to buck the national trend by investing in council-owned Children's Homes provision
which means we can reduce expensive out-of-borough placements and support our young people by ensuring they can attend school
be closer to their family and any wider support network and enjoy time with their friends as any child should
We welcomed more than one hundred professionals from across the region to South Shields Town Hall for our hate crime conference
with this year's theme being 'From Adversity to Diversity'
The conference has become a key annual event
aimed at identifying and tackling this issue and we are really proud to be leading the way with this in the North East
we are committed to equality and inclusivity
There is simply no place for hate in our communities
acceptance and kindness is crucial so that everyone feels safe in our diverse borough
We also held the North East's first Child Poverty Summit with representatives from organisations across the borough and region vowing to tackle child poverty head on
The event highlighted the commitment and determination of people to work together to address child poverty and it was heartening to see all the positive interventions in place
including the work with young people and schools
There are staggering levels of poverty in our borough and region
and we made it a priority long before the cost-of-living crisis hit
We have worked collaboratively with partners and the third sector
and it is that co-operative approach that sets South Tyneside apart and has enabled us to do so much for those most in need of support
While there is a huge amount of work going on to alleviate poverty in South Tyneside
most of the levers to action real change are still in the control of central government and we are hoping for change
Instead of dealing with the effects of poverty
we need to stop people being in poverty in the first place
As part of our ongoing campaign to boost the take up of Pension Credit in South Tyneside we hosted a drop-in event at The Word providing advice and support for our older residents
our efforts to promote pension credit have resulted in over £838,000 being claimed by residents who are eligible
but it is estimated that there are still around 3,000 people in South Tyneside not claiming and we want to ensure every single person gets the money that is due to them
We will be hosting further events during November so look out for further details or check out our cost-of-living web pages
The Chancellor presented her first budget this month
This was a huge budget for the country set within a context of really challenging public finances
As a council who has already saved over £208m since 2010 we know all too well the difficult decisions that have to be made to balance the books
What I really welcome in the Chancellor's budget is action to protect and support those in our communities who need it most
In South Tyneside we are focused on targeting our support to make things fairer to make every penny count and to reduce inequalities
Councillor Tracey DixonLeader of South Tyneside Council

Karbon Homes and South Tyneside Council are set to welcome the first residents to 10 newly built supported housing bungalows in Hebburn
Developed to support residents with learning disabilities
autism and complex care needs to live more independently
the new homes will help address the lack of specialist supported housing options in the borough
Executive Director of Development and Regeneration at Karbon Homes
said: "It's fantastic to see these new bungalows finished
a scheme that provides more than just 'bricks and mortar' homes
supported community where adults from the borough with learning disabilities
"At Karbon we're committed to working with our local partners to deliver housing that meets the needs of our communities
and this project with South Tyneside Council is a great example of what can be achieved through collaborative working
maximising one another's knowledge and expertise."
on the site of the former Father James Walsh Day Centre
make up one of two supported housing developments the partnership is delivering
built on the former Nolan Hall on Concorde Way in Jarrow
comprises five bungalows and a block of six one and two-bed flats
Completion of these is expected in the coming months
All 21 of the new homes have been allocated through South Tyneside Council
Tenants have been prioritised to reduce the need for them to go into residential care or to move outside the borough
and in some cases have been brought back into the borough
Residents moving into the new homes will live independently but with the benefit of 24/7 onsite care and support should they need it
The Hedgeley Road scheme has a six-bedroom staff bungalow on site and the Concorde Way scheme a four-bed staff house
which will be manned by care providers commissioned by South Tyneside Council
The schemes form part of the Council's wider Adult Social Care Accommodation Strategy aimed at supporting people who may need care and support to live independently in the community
said: "This is a fantastic scheme and we are really proud to have delivered it in partnership with Karbon
"The development will provide adults with care needs with the independence of their own home
but with the security of knowing they have round-the-clock on-site support should they need it
"Our residents have told us they would prefer to live independently in the community rather than go into residential care
and investing in bespoke facilities such as this helps addresses that need for specialist
affordable accommodation in the place they call home."
The delivery of the two schemes is part-funded by Homes England
through Karbon Homes' Strategic Partnership with the Government's housing delivery agency
The strategic partnership has provided the northern housing association with £165m in funding to deliver 2,200 new affordable homes across the North East and Yorkshire over the next few years
10% of which has been dedicated to the development of new homes for people requiring additional support needs
The Heed took the lead with 34 minutes on the clock when Aidan Rutledge slotted home
which Tom Allan followed up on to give his side a one-goal lead at half time
despite Michael Turner’s leveller one minute after the opener
Rob Elliot’s side took full control in the second half however with six goals – including a debut hat-trick from Will McGowan – settling a fine first pre-season outing on Tyneside
Gateshead named two new signings in their first half 11
with Tiernan Brooks and Fenton John slotting in alongside familiar faces and three trialists at Hebburn Sports Ground
Despite having much of the possession early on
it took over half an hour for the deadlock to be broken via Rutledge
who converted Oli Thompson’s cross from close range to get himself off the mark in pre-season
Hebburn levelled things almost instantly though
with Turner’s header from an in-swinging corner finding the top left of Brooks’ net via a slight deflection to bring the tie back to square one
Allan had the final say of the first half to restore Gateshead’s lead however
sending a side-footed volley past Kieran Hunter and into the far corner of the net for his side’s second of the night
The 418 in attendance certainly got their money’s worth in the second 45 with no less than six goals from an all-change Gateshead XI
with the first coming via McGowan’s 25-yard curler only six minutes into his first Heed appearance
The midfielder – who only joined from Blyth Spartans an hour and a half before kick off – added his second just after the hour mark
to make it five goals for those in black and white in the blink of an eye
McGowan would turn provider to tee up Owen Oseni for his first goal since arriving this summer with 79 minutes on the clock
before Oseni was felled inside the penalty area for Luke Hannant to convert from the penalty spot for the seventh of the night
Taylor Ford and James Simpson were introduced in the 86th minute for their maiden first team appearances of the season
but there was no more news on the goalscoring front as The Heed saw out the evening with seven on the scoreboard

An innovative renewable energy centre named after internationally renowned scientist Paul Younger has been officially opened in his hometown
uses air source heat pumps to provide renewable heating and hot water to Durham Court residential block and Hebburn Central leisure facility
Councillor Fay Cunningham unveiled a plaque to mark the official opening of the building
Stella Matthewson and dignitaries including former Mayor Councillor John McCabe as well as Paul's family and friends
The Mayor said: "The Hebburn Renewable Energy Centre is a wonderful tribute to the late Professor Paul Younger
It was a real honour to perform the official opening and wonderful to mark such a special occasion with Paul's family and friends
"Paul was described by his colleagues as passionate
warm and as having a fundamental desire to do good in the world
I'm sure he would be extremely proud to have such a fantastic facility in the town he was born."
The centre's two-stage 450kw air source heat pump solution takes ambient heat from the air and converts it into hot water to provide low carbon heating
It has allowed the Council to reduce its reliance on traditional
and is helping to cut carbon emissions by around 320 tonnes per year
Electricity generated locally using solar panels and a Combined Heat and Power unit helps to power the system
The project originally intended to draw on geothermally heated warm water in flooded disused coal mines
this method was found to be unworkable during the drilling works phase due to the conditions deep underground which could not have been foreseen
mitigation measures designed into the scheme from the outset meant the project could progress
with energy generated by drawing ambient heat from the air
The building is named after the late Professor Paul Younger
a hydrogeologist and environmental engineer recognised around the world for his work on mine water pollution and renewable energy
He played a key role in the bid to make Newcastle a City of Science and Technology
He also led the research team that won Newcastle University its first Queen's Anniversary Prize for Higher Education in 2005
Paul was educated at St Joseph's Grammar School before going to Newcastle University to study Geology
receiving a first-class honours degree in 1984
He was later appointed Director of the Newcastle Institute for Research on Sustainability
Paul moved to Glasgow where he accepted the role of Chair of Engineering at Glasgow University
researching geothermal and renewable energy
Paul's son Dominic Glasgow said: "The Paul Younger Centre stands as a beacon for the future
solar panels and combined heat and power unit represents the kind of solutions my father worked his entire life to develop
this centre is a fitting tribute to my father's legacy
We hope that this centre will inspire future generations
just as Paul inspired all of us to imagine a better
The technologies in play inside this building will help create a cleaner
"While we deeply wish he could be here
we are incredibly proud that his vision and hard work are continuing to make a real impact with homes and businesses in Hebburn already benefiting from the low-carbon heat he helped to bring to life."
The scheme secured more than £4.8m in funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and was developed in collaboration with the Coal Authority and Durham University
with the new centre built in a partnership with Vital Energi
It is the second of the Council's flagship renewable energy projects
following the opening of the award-winning Viking Energy Network in Jarrow (VENJ)
VENJ draws heat from the River Tyne using innovative technologies
are delivering a combined annual reduction of around 1,035 tonnes in carbon emissions
Lead Member for Neighbourhoods and Climate Change at South Tyneside Council
said: "These groundbreaking energy centres show real innovation and vision in renewable energy solutions
We will continue to work in partnership with others to assess and deliver future schemes wherever possible to help us deliver even more carbon savings
"They are just one of the ways we are using modern technology to meet our energy demands in a more sustainable way and creating a cleaner
