Station Director of Heysham 2 Martin Cheetham on the uniqueness of the UK's fleet of advanced gas-cooled reactors
the prospect of a life extension and a possible future with small modular reactors
The Heysham 2 nuclear power plant on the northwest coast of England is one of the UK's fleet of advanced gas reactors (AGRs) which came online in the 1970s and 1980s
It features two 620 MWe reactors which were connected to the grid in 1988
with an initial planned service life of 35 years
which means a current scheduled shutdown date of 2028
who was previously plant manager of a coal-fired power station
arrived at Heysham 1 as station director in 2020
before moving to its neighbouring station of Heysham 2 in March this year
He says that the biggest difference between the thermal plants and nuclear ones is that "the regulatory footprint is completely different
but a lot of the conventional plant is the same".
The UK's AGRs are the second generation of British gas-cooled reactors
featuring graphite moderator and carbon dioxide as primary coolant
At the moment there is a process on-going to consider a further extension to Heysham 2's operating life
Cheetham explains of AGRs: "They are fantastic pieces of equipment
They are an evolution of the old Magnox design and they were designed to marry up to existing steam turbine technology - so the steam conditions are exactly the same as in many thermal plants
The AGR operates at a higher temperature than pressurised water reactors (the carbon dioxide circulates through the core
reaching 650°C) and it's a very reliable design."
"The team here are quite rightly still very proud of that record
There has always been a great focus on operation performance
plant reliability and it really demonstrates what an AGR can do," says Cheetham
"We've moved to off-load refuelling so we won't see that record again
but we still strive for the same standards between refuelling outages."
with Heysham 2 recently hitting the cumulative total for electricity generated of 300 terrawatt hours - "if you put that into context it is the same as powering every home in the county we sit in, Lancashire
or of saving more than 100 million tonnes of CO2"
The record for lifetime generation for an individual nuclear power plant in the UK is held by Hinkley Point B at 311 TWh
"That is a fantastic achievement for any AGR" but with Hinkley Point B ending generation in 2022 "we've got a few more years ahead so hopefully we can grab the baton and become the UK's most productive AGR."
On the question of a further extension to its operating lifetime
Cheetham acknowledges it is a complex decision: "As the graphite ages
we see different properties in the graphite and we enter an inspection-led regime
So we go into the core with remote equipment a few times a year just to inspect the the fuel channels
That then gives us a picture of how the core is ageing and it helps us form an internal view on how far we think we can generate from the core that we have
"The inspections that we've done have been in line with our expectations
We've got some more inspections to do which will form a better view and also consolidate the findings
We're looking to make a lifetime decision by the end of the year
but a lifetime decision doesn't only concern graphite
So that's a significant investment decision for us as a company
boiler integrity - all the ancillary systems and the enablers that would allow this plant to go that little bit further
however we do engage with our regulators at every step of the way so they're fully aligned with us ..
it is an inspection-led regime."
The inspection findings are presented to the regulator for their approval in line with the established safety case "and that then takes us on the journey to achieve that life extension"
is that they have been learning from their colleagues at Hinkley Point B
and with a large skilled and supportive workforce
one eye is also being kept on what happens after the current plant's life comes to an end
capable group of people who are grounded in the nuclear industry and a community which is used to nuclear" and plenty of jobs in the years ahead during the eventual decommissioning process
The hope is to plug into the UK's plan to expand to 24 GW of nuclear capacity over the next few decades
It is not a site suitable for a new gigawatt plant
but the hope is that it will be home to small modular reactors
Great British Nuclear is currently running a technology selection process which aims to select at least two types and then provide sites for them to be built at
Cheetham says they will be watching the GBN contest outcome closely
How many SMRs would fit on the site? "We'd love to host as many as we can get but we have to understand the detailed designs and the footprint"
That decision by GBN is now expected to be taken around April or May 2025
whatever the outcome of those decisions, it's a "fabulous industry" to be working in with lots of exciting things happening and his advice to anyone thinking of nuclear as a career would be

This Council welcomes last month’s announcement that following a detailed technical review of the power stations
EDF’s licensee board has decided to extend generation dates for Heysham 1 by one year to 2027 and Heysham 2 by two years to 2030
This decision is great news for Heysham and the wider local community
The power stations are a provider of high skill
and the extension of the generating life of the power stations secures employment for more than 1,500 staff and contractors
The power stations are anchor institutions
with supply chains and spending power boosting the local economy
They are also a major source of business rate revenue for the Council
whose significant contributions help secure a higher standard of local services and protect more Council jobs than would otherwise be possible
This decision is also excellent news nationally
Extending the generating lives of the Heysham stations will bolster the UK’s security of supply and support plans for the rapid expansion of renewables by helping to maintain grid stability
Nuclear power is a low carbon source of energy
and a key element of the Government’s strategy to provide clean power by 2030
Ensuring the baseload with nuclear power also helps limit the UK’s dependence on imported gas
a regrettable situation which has caused an energy crisis and led to inflated household bills
Council has confidence in the safety considerations underpinning this decision
We note that ongoing generation from the stations will ultimately depend not on decisions by EDF
the results of which are reviewed by the independent regulator
Council notes that Heysham is a location earmarked by the Government for the potential siting of one or more Small Modular Reactors (SMR)
that EDF is an approved development partner for these new technologies
and that the first reactors of this type are intended to be delivered by 2029
Council supports bringing ‘New Nuclear’ to Heysham and welcomes the continuation of the benefits this would bring to both our residents and the rest of the UK

was arrested and later charged with Keith’s murder
Smith pleaded guilty to murder at Preston Crown Court
He was remanded back into custody to be sentenced at Preston Crown Court on Monday 7th April 2025
Our thoughts remain with Keith’s family who continue to be supported by specially trained officers
of our Force Major Investigation Team said: “Smith carried out a cowardly attack on a vulnerable man
“My thoughts remain with Keith’s family and loved ones at this incredibly distressing time
Smith put them through the worry of a trial
before only admitting his guilt seven days later
and hope that Smith finally admitting his wrongdoing begins to give Keith’s loved ones some closure.”

The UK's Heysham 1 and Hartlepool Advanced Gas Cooled Reactor nuclear power plants will operate until March 2027
while the Heysham 2 and Torness AGR plants will operate until March 2030
EDF manages the UK's eight nuclear power plant sites
Heysham 1 and Hartlepool) and three that have entered decommissioning (Hunterston B
It took over the sites when it acquired British Energy in 2009
The company is also constructing the new Hinkley Point C plant in Somerset
and there are advanced plans for a replica of Hinkley Point C at Sizewell C in Suffolk
Heysham 1 and Hartlepool were due to move into defuelling in March 2026 based on a review in 2023
Heysham 2 and Torness were due to move into defuelling in March 2028 based on a review in 2021
EDF Energy has now announced a one-year life extension for Heysham 1 and Hartlepool
and a two-year extension for Heysham 2 and Torness
and the precise dates will be determined by the results of regular graphite inspections and how those results are interpreted within EDF and by the independent regulator
the Office for Nuclear Regulation," the company noted
The company said the decision was taken "after a rigorous review process over the past seven months" and "a series of EDF executive
board and shareholder meetings on 3 December
as a minority shareholder in the fleet"
EDF Energy said: "As well as bolstering energy security
the decision supports plans for the rapid expansion of renewables by helping to maintain grid stability
It also helps limit the UK's dependence on imported gas
with a further 45 TWh of output displacing around 9.3 billion cubic metres of gas over the extended lifetimes
more than 20% of last year's LNG imports."
"Today's decision is testament to EDF's ongoing investment in the UK's nuclear fleet and the hard work of the employees and suppliers supporting these sites," said Mark Hartley
managing director of EDF's Nuclear Operations business
"When EDF acquired these stations in 2009 they were all due to end generation by early 2023 which would have left the UK with just one generating nuclear station at Sizewell B
Careful stewardship and around GBP8 billion (USD10.1 billion) of investment since 2009 has seen several life extensions for these stations and much higher output than was predicted."
EDF plans to invest a further GBP1.3 billion in the five operating nuclear power plants over the next three years (2025-27) on top of the GBP8 billion already invested since 2009 to safely extend operating lifetimes
the nuclear fleet has generated over 240 TWh more electricity than expected back then
enough zero-carbon electricity to power every UK home for two years," the company noted
The announcement of the lifetime extensions was welcomed by the UK's independent energy system planner and operator
the National Energy System Operator (NESO)
NESO released a comprehensive and independent analysis of how to achieve Clean Power in 2030
This advice was commissioned in August by the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero
The report concluded nuclear will play an important role in the UK achieving a clean power system by 2030 and beyond with life extensions for the current fleet and a new generation of nuclear plants
"I welcome today's announcement from EDF on the plant life extensions," said NESO CEO Fintan Slye
"NESO's advice to the UK government on delivering clean power by 2030
show the important role that nuclear power will play in the electricity system to 2030 and out to 2050."
the Britain Remade campaign group said hitting the UK's target for a clean energy grid by 2030 will be "almost impossible" without extending the operation of some of the country's nuclear power plants
"EDF's intentions are now clear," Britain Remade CEO Sam Richards said
"Ministers and the Office for Nuclear Regulation now need to urgently back their plans to extend the life of existing reactors where it is safe to do so
“With this announcement ministers must not take their eyes off the ball and continue to push for the rapid development of small modular reactors to run alongside their bigger cousins
They must also increase grid capacity and slash the time it takes for clean energy projects to get connected to the grid
Extending our existing reactors is a big step
Nuclear Industry Association Chief Executive Tom Greatrex welcomed EDF's announcement
saying: "These extensions will cut bills
and protect jobs for communities that need them
They represent the single biggest contribution to Clean Power 2030 this year and are vital to propping up our shaky grid
The margin between us and blackouts is a few hundred megawatts
“The AGRs are the most productive clean energy assets in our history and their extra output will cut over 9 billion cubic metres of gas use and save over 16 million tonnes of CO2
their generating lives can not be repeatedly extended - so as welcome as this news is - it is not a substitute for getting on and building new nuclear capacity at Sizewell C
a fleet of SMRs and a project at Wylfa to ensure a clean
reliable power system for the long term."
Lancaster City Council said there has been "a pollution incident" affecting beaches and water in the area
They have asked people to stay away from the area until further notice while a clean up takes place.
The council said that responsible authorities were aware and are investigating
"Our advice is to avoid the beach until further notice as residual contamination may still be present," said a Lancaster City Council public notice
"Please avoid all contact with visible tar/oil on the beach and in the water
"Please report any new contamination to Lancaster City Council on 01524 582000."

A Lancaster Police spokesperson said on Saturday: "Please be aware that Lancaster City Council along with other agencies are currently dealing with what looks like an oil spill on the beach at Half Moon Bay in Heysham
"Please avoid the area where possible."
Residents are still being asked to stay away from the Half Moon Bay area while the operation takes place following the spill late last week
A Lancaster City Council spokesperson said on Monday: "Thank you to everyone for your support
patience and understanding as we continue to deal with the pollution incident at Half Moon Bay
"While the substance has not yet been fully confirmed
it appears to be an oil or fuel-type substance and we’re working closely with the Environment Agency and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency to investigate the source
"Please continue to stay away from the area as the clean-up operation takes place
"If you have any information that could assist in identifying the source of the pollution please contact us on 01524 582000
"We don’t currently have any timescales as to when the work will be completed due to the specialist nature of the clean-up
We’ll provide further updates as the work continues and thank you for your continued support."
A comment from a resident on the council's Facebook page suggested the spill could have been dumped from a plane - as one had been spotted over Morecambe Bay
But the council replied saying this plane could have been "the coastguard as they overflew the site on Saturday to check the extent of the pollution"

A planning application has gone in to Lancaster City Council for the unattended fuel station on the built on the site of the port's former marine workshops off Princess Alexandra Way
The station would have four pumps for cars and light goods vehicles
a bunkering area comprising four pumps for the refuelling of HGVs
The planning application is for 'construction of a filling station including single storey facilities and control buildings
HGV parking and electric charging areas and associated infrastructure'
The site is bounded by commercial properties and Heysham Port and passenger terminal
and by Heysham Golf course to the east and south
An application form submitted with the plans says: "A large stone building associated with Heysham Port was present on the site until 2024
but was removed under a Demolition Notice prior to an ecological site visit by the previous landowner."
