became movie stars examines British actor Anne Heywood who
Anne Heywood is not a well-remembered actress
which is odd considering that she was beautiful
played leads in feature films for over almost two decades
had a high-profile marriage with a producer
and played so many sexually charged leading roles
Heywood depicted characters who (among other things) masturbated naked in front of mirrors
were men before gender reassignment surgery
got raped by black janitors and started to enjoy it
Heywood then spent the next few years touring with a stage variety show run by Carroll Levis
as well as appearing on television and radio
she signed a seven-year contract with the Rank Organisation
who gave her a new name (she recognised that her old one sounded unrealistic
and it would eventually happen with Anne Heywood
things were all rosy between actress and studio
and Heywood rose rapidly through the ranks: she began with decorative parts in Checkpoint (1956) and Doctor at Large (1957)
then was loaned out to low budget experts the Danzingers to star in The Depraved (1957) (alongside Carroll Levis)
Rank gave her a juicy support part in Dangerous Exile (1957)
a fun French Revolutionary adventure tale starring Belinda Lee
then promoted her to leading roles: Violent Playground (1958)
a social realist crime drama with Stanley Baker; Floods of Fear (1958)
a thriller set in the USA with imported star Howard Keel; The Heart of a Man (1959)
a Frankie Vaughan musical; Upstairs and Downstairs (1959)
The studio also loaned her out to an Italian company to make a peplum
This really was a proper star-building effort from Rank for Anne Heywood
made by big-at-the-time British directors (Ralph Thomas
Rank even tried to launch Heywood as a singer
releasing a single by her from Heart of a Man on its record label
especially as Heywood hadn’t arrived at the studio off the back of anything notable
like a popular or critically acclaimed movie
and the studio had changed the name under which she had achieved that fame
Rank may have been determined to boost Heywood in part because it had recently fired several other actresses it had been building into stars – Belinda Lee and Maureen Swanson – due to their personal life antics; no doubt the studio hoped to prove it could turn anyone into a star
And Heywood clearly had tremendous drive and ability to get publicity
though – none of Heywood’s films for Rank were hits
all the movies basically cast her as “the girl”
Rank then loaned out Heywood to United Artists to play “the girl” in A Terrible Beauty (1960)
a film about the IRA with Robert Mitchum and Richard Harris
an independent British filmmaker who specialised in edgy stories that used imported American stars in the lead (Flesh is Weak
she and Stross fell in love at first sight
despite him being married; Stross soon got a divorce to wed Anne (his ex remarried quickly
Rank found itself with a female contract player who was causing headlines due to a romance with a married man
The studio did not offer her any more roles
“I’m fed up with playing wishy-washy good girls,” Heywood said
“I want to play women with sex appeal.” In particular
Heywood would have been aware of how Belinda Lee revitalised her career post-Rank playing sexy parts in Italy
“I’ve got plenty of sex appeal,” insisted Heywood
“British films just didn’t give me the chance to use it
They are written around men.” In December 1960
Heywood broke off her contract with Rank two years early
Petticoat Pirates (1961) and Stork Talk (1962)
then starred in three films all produced by her husband aimed at turning Heywood into a star: The Brain (1962)
a version of Donovan’s Brain from Freddie Francis; The Very Edge (1963)
a thriller where Heywood is raped and stalked; and Ninety Degrees in the Shade (1965)
as a woman having an affair with a married man
Audiences didn’t particularly seem to care
although The Brain has gained a cult fanbase
Heywood made a Hollywood film shot in Peru
but filming was abandoned after star Eric Fleming (from TV’s Rawhide) drowned during filming
She had better luck establishing herself in the US with The Fox (1967)
produced in Canada by her husband from a novella by DH Lawrence; Heywood played a Canadian farmer living with Sandy Dennis whose life is interrupted by the arrival of Keir Dullea
Heywood utterly committed to the part – going nude
The movie was done with taste by director Mark Rydell and had just the right amount of sexual content for 1967 audiences: it was a huge hit
Heywood returned to sexually explicit material with a nunsploitation film shot in Italy
a nun accused of breaking celibacy and plotting murder
she and Stross made Midas Run (1969) with Richard Crenna
who says Heywood arranged for the script to be changed to suit her
She was in The Chairman (1969) with Gregory Peck
she played the female led in Trader Horn (1973)
If Heywood struggled to get a foothold in Hollywood
she was in much demand in Italy: The Killer is on the Phone (1972)
more nunsploitation; First Time on the Grass (1974)
Heywood did two more remarkably gutsy performances: I Want What I Want (1972)
playing a man who has a sex change; and Good Luck
as a lonely teacher sexually assaulted by a black janitor (from a script by Polly Platt and a novel by William Inge and very ‘70s television direction from Marvin Chomsky)
Neither managed to recapture the success of The Fox although both have plenty for a viewer to chew over
We’re particularly surprised there isn’t more critical discussion over Miss Wyckoff
considering its frank content and Polly Platt authorship – there is certainly a lot going on
Heywood mostly worked in television – including a role in Don Sharp’s What Waits Below (1984)
She was brave and had a tremendous work ethic
She wanted to make something special of her life
so she did whatever was needed – whether entering some silly beauty contest
These were not “done” things at the time for most established white actresses
even after The Fox – there was something a little distant about her persona perhaps; she lacked the warmth
Her acting had its limitations and many of her movies badly needed better directors
The leader of Rochdale Borough Council has welcomed a £20 million government funding boost for Heywood as part of the government’s Plan for Neighbourhoods initiative
Councillor Neil Emmott said the cash injection would enhance the council’s ambitious regenerations plans for Middleton
Heywood is one of just 75 areas to get a share of the £1.5 billion government package
create jobs and transform local communities
complementing the council’s vision to transform the town centre with new homes
enhance safety and create new green spaces
Decisions on how the £20 million will be spent will be taken by the local Neighbourhood Board
businesses and community campaigners and is already working on an investment plan to be submitted to government later this year
“Today’s welcome government announcement is about putting control in the hands of local people
who are best placed to decide how they want this money spent
Following on from the council’s radical budget proposals
this is another boost for our ambitious regeneration plans for township areas like Heywood and Middleton
The funding boost underlines both the council’s and government’s commitment to invest in our communities and unleash the enormous potential we have locally”

Muswell Press has acquired Miss Veal and Miss Ham
former executive director of the RSC and joint chief executive of the Royal Court Theatre
acquired world rights directly from the author
and the book will be published in paperback and e-book in July 2025
"It is 1951 and behind the counter of a modest post office in a leafy Buckinghamshire village Miss Dora Ham and Miss Beatrix Veal maintain their careful façade as respected local spinsters," the synopsis says
"But their true story is one of passion: suffragist activists who fell in love at a rally in the 1900s
danced in London’s secret gay clubs between the wars
and comforted one another during the first night of the Blitz
Together they have built a life of quiet dignity and service in rural England."
The synopsis adds: "Now over the course of one pivotal day their carefully constructed world begins to fracture
Through Beatrix’s wry perspective we witness the severe impact of post-war changes on their peaceful existence
Changes that will lead to heart-breaking decisions for Miss Veal and Miss Ham."
Sarah and Kate Beal said: "We are delighted to discover Vikki Heywood
her wonderful debut novel leapt out of our inbox and into our hearts
a tender yet sharply observed look at lesbian love later in life
the indomitable Miss Veal and Miss Ham look back over four decades together."

Stalwart of the British stage who was also known for her film roles in Romeo and Juliet and 10 Rillington Place
who was wrongly convicted and hanged for the murders Christie had committed
Heywood was the staunch and reliable leader of any creative ensemble, and her reputation for being the heart, the backbone, of the regional theatre, stemmed from her earliest days at the Bristol Old Vic and her meeting there with the actor and director Oliver Neville
starting with the Old Vic’s tour to India in 1962
When he was appointed principal at Rada in London in 1986
while managing to maintain a busy career on stage and screen
had her hands full with the children – to Manchester and then Nottingham
where Pat attended West Bridgford grammar school (and where the writer Malcolm Bradbury was a contemporary)
but had to leave before completing her exams as the family funds were over-stretched
She worked in the Nottingham central library and as an auxiliary nurse before joining the Bristol Old Vic theatre school
she was immediately taken on as an actor/assistant stage manager and made her stage debut in the 1952-53 season in Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment and Sheridan’s 18th-century The Duenna
Before Salad Days – whose multitasking cast of 12 included Reynolds herself
Alan Dobie and Eric Porter – Heywood was also Dunyasha in The Cherry Orchard in 1953
then moved on to seasons in the late 50s in Nottingham
Her West End prominence in the 70s was capped by a wonderfully stern, comic performance in Mary O’Malley’s award-winning satirical
and inoffensively blasphemous comedy Once a Catholic (1977) at the Royal Court and the Wyndham’s (where it ran for over two years)
delivering a final speech as Mother Peter to the departing convent girls: “Remember that God made your bodies for himself … All parts of the body are sacred
but none more so than the parts connected with the mystery of motherhood.”

solid productions of JB Priestley’s When We Are Married and
the Victorian melodrama The Ticket-of-Leave Man by Tom Taylor
in which she was memorable as a loquacious granny
in a “stunning cast” that included Jack Shepherd
she returned to the Bristol Old Vic as Paulina – a wonderful role to match her quiet constancy and humanity – in The Winter’s Tale
and as the more lubricious Kath in Joe Orton’s Entertaining Mr Sloane
she popped up in one of the West End’s most notorious flops – the Rocky Horror Show writer Richard O’Brien’s Top People (1984) at the Ambassadors
as a newly widowed niece and her sick aunt
Other films included a touching coming-of-age sex comedy, Getting It Right (1989), in which she played the concerned mother of an attractive boy (Jesse Birdsall) assailed by women – Lynn Redgrave
Helena Bonham-Carter and Jane Horrocks – on all sides
