Energy storage developer Pulse Clean Energy has today (26 November) announced that it has successfully energised its latest battery energy storage system (BESS) project
This project is part of a wider plan by Pulse Clean Energy to convert diesel power generation sites to grid-scale BESS assets
representing the fifth of nine sites that Pulse plans to convert in this way
The project was financed by a £175 million credit facility granted to Pulse Clean Energy by a consortium of banks
and the Investment Management Corporation of Ontario
said: “The successful commissioning of our first two-hour battery project is a milestone for Pulse Clean Energy as we continue to advance our strategy to support the integration of renewable energy solutions into the UK’s grid
Battery storage is crucial to strengthening the resilience of the grid and enabling growth in renewable energy generation.”
the company announced that it partnered with energy storage platform provider Powin on Project Overhill
a 50MW/110MWh BESS under development in Scotland
Powin will provide its Stack750 energy storage system units with associated software
while Pulse Clean Energy will oversee asset delivery and manage operations for the project
The project is expected to begin full commercial operations by mid-2025
This is not the only significant BESS asset to be energised in recent weeks. Earlier this month, Irish state-owned electricity firm ESB announced it had opened a 150MW/300MWh BESS in County Cork
becoming ESB’s largest operational asset to date
The UK also saw another significant milestone this month, as the nation’s first co-located solar and storage facility, the Larks Green project, connected to the UK transmission network for the first time. While the 70MWp solar PV power plant onsite was completed in April 2023
the more recent energisation of the 49.95MW/99MWh BESS makes the project the first of its kind to connect to the transmission grid in the UK
Meanwhile in Yorkshire, TagEnergy recently energised what it claims is the UK’s largest transmission connected BESS, the 100MW/200MWh Lakeside development.

and new roads and railway links are among the schemes that are set to be put forward to be included in a new regional transport plan
A report to Rhondda Cynon Taf council’s cabinet on Wednesday
will seek approval to submit several transport schemes for consideration as part of the South Wales Regional Transport Plan (RTP) that is going out to public consultation in late January or early February
If approved by cabinet the active travel schemes would include the Rhondda Fawr community cycle route
and surrounding community cycle route links
a new active travel route to Ferndale Community School through Oaklands Business Park
and a new active travel route from Parc Gellifaelog in Tonypandy to Cambrian Industrial Estate
The bus schemes would include the northwest corridor from Creigiau to Pontyclun
a Pontypridd to Church Village to Talbot Green to Bridgend bus corridor enhancement scheme
a Pontypridd to Blackwood to Pontypool rapid transit scheme
an Aberdare to Merthyr Tydfil to Ebbw Vale to Abergavenny rapid transit scheme
and bus station upgrades and refurbishments in Aberdare
Those schemes labelled “interchanges” include the expansion of sites at Porth
Under private car schemes the council lists the Llanharan Sustainable Transport Corridor
the A4119 Castell Mynach junction improvements
strategic transport corridor management on the A4119
And when it comes to rail the list includes Aberdare to Hirwaun with the reinstatement of passenger services and new rail stations at Llwydcoed
and the potential to extend to Hirwaun Industrial Estate
a new rail station at Treforest Industrial Estate south of the existing station
and a rail station at Treforest Industrial Estate north of the existing station
While the duty to produce a regional transport plan sits with the CJCs (Corporate Joint Committees) the duty to deliver it remains with the local authorities so RCT needs to provide a list of transport schemes that will be submitted as part of a bidding process for funding and where successful be incorporated into a Regional Transport Delivery Plan (RTDP)
The report said that a primary driver for taking schemes forward is affordability and deliverability with a time line for delivery within the five-year period of the plan and this has fed into the selection and priority of the proposed list
It said that RCT has worked with CCR (Cardiff Capital Region) and TfW (Transport for Wales) on the process of developing the RTDP and was now looking to submit a definitive list of schemes for inclusion during January 2025

Allelys has completed the transport and installation of a 309.5-tonne turbine
326.1-tonne generator and 221.8-tonne transformer from Newport Docks to Hirwaun power station in Wales
Due to the extent of the route-enabling works required
Allelys began the initial phase of the project in June 2022
tree trimming and street furniture assessments
a suitable route to site was identified.
This route saw the cargo arriving at Newport Docks
travelling north and then west towards the site
the River Taff Bridge was downrated before transport
Allelys reacted and engineered a 17.5m long overbridging solution to spread the weight of the load and enable the transport arrangement to cross this section successfully.
generator and transformer were transported along the first section of the route using a 28-axle girder frame setup
The components were then individually transhipped onto a 1-axle flat-top trailer using a 400-tonne hydraulic lifting system
This enabled the smaller transport arrangement to negotiate the limited space and steep gradient of the second section of the route
The whole route was travelled under police escort
with traffic management and rolling roadblocks in place.
all three units completed a second transhipment operation
The units were moved onto SPMTs to allow for the limited space within the power station
A hydraulic gantry system was then utilised to install the turbine and generator whilst a jacking operation was performed to install the transformer.
“We have significant knowledge and experience within the team and this enables us to tackle complex projects such as this one
The route from Newport Docks to Hirwaun power station was particularly challenging and required the input from the engineering team alongside our route survey and route planning specialists,” explained Shahid Islam

A Welsh housing association has started work to fix safety issues at 60 homes built with reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC)
Trivallis is carrying out the work on homes on the Gower Estate in Hirwaun and has completed the first property
RAAC is a lightweight form of concrete that is less durable and has a lifespan of around 30 years
Trivallis will install a safety deck across the ceilings of all upper-floor rooms in each home
“This deck will ensure the stability and security of the RAAC panels
keeping them firmly in place,” the landlord said
An extra layer of plywood will be added to the safety deck to form a protective barrier and catch small fragments that might fall from the RAAC panels
The remaining homes will be completed in a phased programme expected to take place from October 2024 until April 2027
The work is expected to take four weeks per home and tenants will be temporarily rehoused nearby during that time
Trivallis is also in contact with 17 private homeowners and landlords with homes at risk of RAAC-related issues via the local authority
It has offered them the option of using its contractor
and no further work will be required to maintain the safety of the properties,” the landlord said
In March this year, the landlord advised 40 households on the estate to leave their homes over the risk posed by RAAC
offering temporary accommodation to those who did
Subsequent structural surveys revealed that only a few homes were at urgent risk
surveyors have carried out weekly inspections to make sure the RAAC panels have not deteriorated
executive director for communities at Trivallis
said: “We understand how stressful the news about RAAC was
and how difficult it has been for people during the months we’ve been evaluating all the options
“We’ve spent the last few months working with experts
we have chosen a plan that we believe will solve the problem
while listening to the tenants’ concerns about moving from the area.”
In August, Aberdeen City councillors decided to demolish and rebuild around 500 homes built with RAAC panels at a cost of at least £150m

Fire crews have been monitoring a large grass fire which is continuing to burn in an area on the southern edge of Bannau Brycheiniog National Park
Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service and South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MAWWFRS) crews were called to the fire at Hirwaun yesterday evening (Wednesday) at around 8.55pm
was already well alight when fire crews arrived
Three separate seats of fire were burning across an area of approximately four and a half miles
Given its remote location and the fact that no properties were under immediate threat
the decision was made to allow the fire to burn out naturally
Fire crews continued to monitor the situation throughout today (Thursday)
While some areas have burned themselves out
MAWWFRS has recently experienced a surge in emergency calls related to grass fires
The service is urging residents only to call 999 if they or their property are in immediate danger
allowing resources to be managed effectively
MAWWFRS crews have utilised drone technology and thermal imaging to enhance firefighter safety and provide real-time situational awareness
This technology enables incident commanders to assess fire spread and allocate resources more effectively
ultimately reducing the risk to both communities and the environment
The fire service has also issued a warning to the public
urging private drone users to avoid flying over fire scenes
The presence of unauthorised drones can disrupt official drone operations
posing safety risks to firefighters and potentially hampering firefighting efforts
MAWWFRS has recently launched its #WildfireWise campaign as part of the Wales Wildfire Board initiative. The campaign aims to educate the public on wildfire prevention and encourage responsible behaviour when enjoying the countryside.

given where the club has found itself in recent times – on the brink of folding – two out of three certainly isn’t bad at all for Deri
From struggling for numbers at the start of pre-season
the club went on to top Division Six East at a canter
“It’s been awesome,” said Iles
who coaches the team along with Jason Lundregan and Dean Higgs
“We had a target of maybe three trophies
“At the start of pre-season myself and Jason had 15 names on a piece of paper
But we built slowly and by September I think we had a squad of 30 – and since then the boys have put a hell of a shift in
They were narrowly beaten 16-13 at home by Seven Sisters in the quarter-finals of the WRU Division Five Cup – the competition Seven Sisters would go on to win in addition to Division Five West Central
Deri’s only other defeat was in the last eight of the Glamorgan County Silver Ball against a side four divisions higher
in the shape of Llanharan – who were Division Two East Central
WRU Division Two Cup and Silver Ball treble winners
Deri dominated the first half of their Mid District Cup final with Division Five East Central outfit Hirwaun
Despite being overpowered in the opening 40 minutes
opponents Hirwaun kept battling and actually outscored Deri 7-6 in the second half during which the heavens opened over Sardis Road
Centre Warren Davies scored a try which was converted by Dafydd Owens
adding to an unconverted try by captain Ashley Moss in the first-half
“The first-half was unbelievable,” added Illes
“Sadly the weather came in second-half but I’ve got to give credit to Hirwaun
they stuck at it until the final whistle.”
The match is part of a revamped format this season
with the old Worthington’s Mid District Cup and Bowl finals replaced by five new Worthington’s Mid District Cup divisional finals
The matches are being played over two ‘Worthy Weekends’ at Sardis Road – incorporating two Friday nights and two Saturdays – rather than in midweek as was the case previously
Sold as a ‘festival of community rugby’
the two weekends also feature women’s and junior matches
Talking about the new concept introduced this year
Mid District Rugby Union president Gareth Davies said: “We held discussions
former coach of Ystrad Rhondda and Colin Smith of Molson Coors
to explore and refresh the Mid District Cup and Bowl competitions
“We came up with a solution that’s a cross between the WRU ‘Road to Principality’ and results of league fixtures between the Mid District’s clubs within their respective divisions.”
added: “We are delighted to see how the committee has grasped the need for change
securing the future of the prestigious Mid District Cups and applaud them for their resolute hard work and dedication
“The new format this season has generated renewed interest in the competition
giving an opportunity for all clubs to compete at an equal level within their division.”

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council has announced that it has received £239,633 from the Welsh Government to advance plans to extend the railway line from Aberdare to Hirwaun
Two options have been considered for the project and the preferred option would extend the rail service from the existing Aberdare Railway Station to Hirwaun
by providing three new stations at Llwydcoed
Hirwaun Station Road/Penyard and Hirwaun Tower Colliery
The council said the Metro Plus project will complement the South Wales Metro
which will see four trains an hour serving Aberdare
Transport for Wales is managing the project and the latest funding through the Cardiff Capital Region Transport Authority will enable various actions to be completed by the appointed consultant Atkins Global Ltd
The council said this work would enable the full business case to be put together in 2023-24
leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and cabinet member for infrastructure and investment
said: “I’m pleased the council has successfully secured £239,633 funding for the next stage of development towards this Metro Plus project
which is a major extension of rail services from Aberdare to Hirwaun
“It is an exciting project that is supported by the Cardiff Capital Region to complement delivery of the South Wales Metro – and is being progressed by the council and Transport for Wales
“The Metro will bring huge benefits to local communities in Rhondda Cynon Taf
“It will electrify around 170km of track around the south east Wales railway network
enabling high frequency fast trains to run from 2024
these trains will run four times an hour from Aberdare and Treherbert
and 12 times an hour between Pontypridd and Cardiff
railway stations and signalling systems will be upgraded
while a multi-million pound depot to service the trains is under construction in Rhondda Cynon Taf
“The Aberdare-Hirwaun extension is a Metro Plus scheme intended to complement delivery of the Metro
the project’s appraisal process identified a preferred option to be developed – to extend the Aberdare line with three new stations
“The council also acquired the former chicken factory site near Llwydcoed in 2021
and continues to explore funding options for a station halt
and modern business unit development at that site
“The council will work closely with Transport for Wales and the appointed consultant Atkins over the weeks and months ahead
as further development work towards the outline business case is completed – with the intention of progressing to the full business case during the next financial year.”
the north and west needs its own devolution settlement from the south-east…
Hirwaun may look like “south east” when you just look at a map but it lies way beyond the Cardiff Bay Bubble
The implied threat with all this metro development – I’ll believe it when I see it work – is that it will cart people off to Cardiff and its outskirts to work thus relieving our dopey Bay set of the need to stimulate economic activity in that part of the Heads of the Valleys
We’ll be even more of a dormitory society than now
I was brought up opposite Hirwaun Railway Station
My mother lived there until 2011 and always hoped that it would reopen one day
It is a long walk from that side of the village to the bus stops
Would loke to see some rail investment in he Gwynedd area
Would like to see some rail investment in he Gwynedd area
The Croesbychan junction will connect Hirwaun and Llwydcoed
We will build a new junction to replace the existing one
The junction and the road will be built mostly on embankment up to 42 ft (13m) high
We will also build a viaduct over the Nant Melyn watercourse
which will carry the new A465. The existing Nant Melyn Viaduct will be used by Non-Motorized Users (NMUs) only
We will build a temporary road to provide space for construction of the permanent road
Brecon FC’s under 7’s team and a U10/11s team travelled to Hirwaun this weekend to take part in a football tournament.
The tournament featured teams from Cardiff, Pontypridd and all over the Rhondda Cynon Taff area. Playing in a highly competitive set of games Brecon FC Juniors were flying the flag for juniors football in Powys.
The U7s won all four games across their fixtures showing great teamwork and being clinical in front of goal. The U10/11 gave a good account of themselves losing two, drawing one and winning two - all against very strong opposition.
Billy Brown of Brecon FC said: “It was a fantastic day and carry’s on from where our all girls left off from their outing in Aberystwyth in April.”
