New crossing will be state-of-the-art for pedestrians
modern Puffin crossings like the one we will be installing in Holbeach are a real step-up improvement over older versions
This will be a contributing factor in our carbon footprint reduction.
“The crossing will be fully refurbished including with new equipment and tactile paving
kerbing and we will remove the old guardrail
Old signage on the approaches to the crossing that is no longer required will also be removed.”
The works will be carried out on the High Street near to the junction of St John’s Street in Holbeach Town centre at the existing Pelican crossing.
February 24 and have a scheduled end date of Friday
Work times onsite will be from 08.00 to 16.00
subject to suitable weather.
A road closure is required for the duration of the works on St John’s Street with a diversion route in place throughout.
The signed diversion route will be; Chapel Street back on to St John’s Street to the junction with Fishpond Lane and vice versa
Access for businesses and residents will be maintained throughout.
Cllr Davies added: “These works will cost around £100,000 to deliver and the new Puffin crossing will have the latest technology to include on-crossing detectors which monitor users as they cross.
“These particularly help pedestrians who might need a bit more time when crossing by increasing the all-red-light time and stopping traffic getting a green signal before the pedestrian has fully reached the opposite side
“Kerbside detectors will also be installed to stop so-called ‘push and walk’ issues
where users push the push button but then cross in a gap in the traffic before the crossing signage is displayed
This stops the delay to traffic when it’s not needed by cancelling the push button demand
in real terms the system is keeping traffic moving more freely than with the old-style pelican crossing.
we have put in a small diversion route using like-for-like roads
This will be in place until the work is completed but will mean that this improvement will be put in as quickly as possible.
“I would like to thank everyone effected for their patience and understanding whilst we get on with the job for this part of Holbeach.”

Works to build a new puffin crossing on Spalding Road ended on Tuesday 15 October
said: “This and the new crossing we’ve just finished in Blyton are the two latest we’ve completed as part of our ongoing initiative to improve safety at the some of the county’s most-crossed roads.
“This initiative is a perfect example of councillors delivering for their local residents
since all of these new crossings will not only increase safety
but also improve the lives of those living in the communities where they’re located by making it easier to get around by foot.”
said: “I’m really happy to see this much-needed crossing fully-built as parents have been calling for it to be built for years
parents and others can safely cross Spalding Road to get to and from the school and town.
“I want to thank everyone who’s helped make this important piece of infrastructure a reality.”
This project is part of the ongoing Community Crossing Initiative
which will see over ten pedestrian crossings built throughout the county
with £1.5 million earmarked by Executive in 2023 and the remaining coming from a combination of additional county council funding and developer contributions
Find out more about this and other major road projects.
Works to build a new puffin crossing in Holbeach will start next month
which will see twelve new pedestrian crossings built throughout the county
And one of the next crossings to be built will be on Spalding Road in Holbeach
“The five-week project will see six new traffic signal heads installed
along with new tactile paving and new road surfacing laid
“These works will no doubt cause some minor disruption
but our team will do all they can to get the new crossing built as quickly and efficiently as possible.”
said: “I’m really happy to see this much-needed scheme coming to fruition
Parents have been calling for this crossing to be built for years following a number of near misses nearby
it will definitely increase safety for schoolchildren
parents and others on this busy road where the school is somewhat hidden
leading to some people drive faster than they should near a school.”
A four-night road closure will be required to lay the final road surfacing at the start of September (7pm-6am)
with a diversion route via Boston Road South / A17 / A151 Welbourne Lane South

A family home and neighbouring house were destroyed after a suspected stray firework ignited a fire on the night of New Years Eve
Karolyn and Richard Ward had just finished watching the New Years Eve fireworks on TV with their daughter when they saw smoke out of their window
The fire spread to the house so quickly that they had to escape out their window with nothing but the clothes on their backs
Richard said: "Five minutes later and we would've been in bed."
Karolyn added: "I dread to think what would've happened because we wouldn't have got out
I've never seen a fire spread so quick
Our daughter was terrified to go to sleep last night."
There was a lot of wind in the area on the night and the fire service currently believe it is most likely that a stray firework caused the blaze
It had been the family's home for over a decade and all of their possessions were lost
Richard said: "I've got nothing left at all
My house is just a complete shell and it's unsafe
all of that was in the loft and it's all gone."
The fire service left the scene initially at 3am but returned a few hours later when the fire had reignited
When they first attended the scene they reported minimal damage on the neighbouring house
But by their second visit both houses were severely damaged
He said: "Everything is basically gone..
I got it when I was 20 and I worked hard since I was 16 to save up and managed to get it on my own
I did the kitchen and bathroom all by myself which I had never done before."
The community has rallied together to support Jayden and the Ward family by gifting them hundreds of items
Separate fundraising pages were also set up to help them rebuild their lives and have already raised thousands of pounds
Karolyn said: "For this to happen you think how silly are people are people to have been letting off fireworks on such a windy night in a weather warning
"But then we have had so much donated
My mum's house is full and my in-laws' house is full
We could never thank people enough ever."

A man has died following a fatal crash between a lorry and a car
The incident took place near Sutterton roundabout and Church Lane yesterday (April 20) afternoon
Police are appealing for witnesses of the crash – which involved a lorry and a white Citroen Berlingo
Officers confirmed this morning the man in his 50s from Holbeach died as a result of the collision
A police spokesperson said: “We are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision and has not yet spoken to officers, to get in touch with our Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU). You can call via 101 or email SCIUinvestigators@lincs.police.uk quoting incident 190 of 20 April.”
The A16 was re-opened shortly before midnight having been shut for nearly 12 hours for the emergency services to deal with the fallout of the crash
Town traders say they have been boosted by the grand opening of a new supermarket
Aldi opened in Fleet Street, Holbeach at the end of January - with a special ceremony featuring Olympic athlete Morgan Bolding — and feedback has been good in the month or so since
Traders have noticed the area is busier as they benefit from Aldi’s footfall — and feel it is attracting more people to the far end of the town
One person who agrees is Caroline Summerfield
who has owned The Flower Basket on Fleet Street for 31 years
She said: “I think it is good for our end of town
it brings more customers to our end of town as we are very close to Aldi
“I feel more people are walking by which is good and they stop and look in the window displays
“There has definitely been more traffic and footfall at this end of town and I think it will bring new customers who want to come to Aldi.”
Mrs Summerfield has seen a ‘huge amount of change’ across three decades but understands that supermarkets will likely offer similar products at a cheaper price
She said: “Of course people will be able to buy flowers more cheaply at Aldi
“But we like to think we do something a bit more special such as catering to funerals and weddings
“I would hope we offer a little better quality and of course our customer service.”
Tesco and Co-op has operated in Holbeach for more than a decade
However since the new Aldi store in town customers and business owners alike are pleased that there is now a choice of where to shop
Poppy Gilling opened her salon Nails By Poppy some five years ago in Merchant Mews and highlights the importance of affordability that Aldi offers along with parking access
The 24-year-old said: “I think Aldi has provided a lot better choice and selection for people who can't afford Tesco
“Tesco has been around for years and the prices in Aldi are more affordable
“There is better parking at Aldi - it is a little town and if we want to bring people in we need better parking.”
Miss Gilling also uses Aldi for personal items as well as business and added that it ‘is definitely somewhere I would go to shop’
Aldi has spent months transforming a former South Holland District Council depot site into a plush new store - which created more than 30 jobs
Its famous middle aisle and value for money helps all generations with their ‘big shop’ during an ongoing cost of living crisis
April Moon is the owner of April Moon Bridal on Park Road and affordable prices play a big part in why she feels Aldi is popular
She said: “I hate to moan about the cost of living crisis but I pop into Tesco and pay a lot for a few things
“You get a lot more for your money in Aldi and although it can be a bit and miss
“In the past I have found something I like in Tesco but then find it has been discontinued.”
Although the businesswoman will continue to shop at both stores
as a vegetarian she also feels Aldi has more on offer
She added: “There is a lot of choice and I’ve been quite a few times to Aldi
“I will continue to shop at both Tesco and Aldi but I do find Tesco very expensive
“There seems to be lots of space in Aldi to move around - it feels like there are wider aisles and it is nice to have some space to shop.”
The traditional High Street has struggled and changed in recent years
In towns such as Spalding a Business Improvement District has been formed to bring positive change to independent businesses
Chris Back is the owner of Home and Antiques Jewellery Shop which he has run for six years on Holbeach High Street
He feels it is too early to predict how Aldi will impact the area
Mr Back said: “It is hard to say if the new Aldi has done us any good yet but I think it is definitely good for the town
“It is a nice change and I think most people who come in have been positive about it
“It is good for a lot of older people and to get them out.”
Having had an interest in antiques since he was 15
Mr Back has seen his business ‘get busier and busier
stronger and stronger which is great after six years.’
community shops and bookstores to have ‘resilience’ on the high street has been highlighted in a recent report
The Booksellers Association (BA) showed that 45 independent bookshops opened in the UK and Ireland last year - compared to 51 in 2023
Bookshop owners often diversify to attract customers by adding a coffee shop and gifts
chairman of The Holbeach Bookshop on Park Road welcomes the new Aldi store as a way to generate custom for other businesses
He said: “The new Aldi in Holbeach is most certainly a welcome addition to Holbeach's shopping offer as it attracts new customers into the town and has increased footfall generally
“Holbeach has felt busier in the last few weeks
“It is a little early to measure if Aldi's presence has directly affected sales in the Holbeach Bookshop
however it is true to say that the Holbeach Bookshop's sales have steadily improved over the last year.”
Mr Baker hopes that the news store will raise Holbeach's profile as a shopping destination and hence will spread the positive benefits across the town.”
A nearby villager who wishes to remain anonymous
feels that the competitors Tesco and Co-op will take notice of the impact from having a new Aldi in town
She said: “I have been a resident of Holbeach St Matthew for almost two years and used to travel once a week to Spalding to go to Aldi and Lidl there - but now I don’t need to
“The Co-op in Holbeach is very expensive and Tesco always had their normal and finest range but not the cheap stuff
“They have suddenly got the cheap stuff in so Tesco have definitely taken note of Aldi
“I still go into Tesco occasionally for their reduced price and I find it is a bit quieter to shop there.”
She feels that Tesco has had a ‘captive market for a long time’ and sees the benefit of having more choice and notes that the staff are ‘lovely at both Tesco and Aldi’
The anonymous shopper added: “The brand new Aldi has lovely wide aisles and is very clean and the staff are all very polite.”
The opening of the new store has brought an employment boost to the town which is another positive
An Aldi spokesperson said: “We know that whenever we open a new store
it has a positive impact on the community it serves and the local businesses in its neighbourhood
“Our Holbeach store has been no different and
affordable groceries to people across the town.”

The people who traditionally light a town’s beacon for special occasions have launched a fundraiser to ensure it will be burning on the 80th anniversary of VE Day
The Holbeach branch of the Royal Observer Corps Association (ROCA) is hoping to put on an event to mark the end of the Second World War in Europe on May 8 around the town beacon but need to raise £1,500
The group has decided to take on the mantle of putting on the event around beacon
which stands on land between Spalding Road and Wignal’s Gate
Holbeach Parish Council is planning to hold celebrations in Carter’s Park after raising safety concerns about the beacon
Branch chairman Tony Topliss has appealed for people’s help to ensure the town’s beacon will be lit to mark this important anniversary
He states on a GoFundMe page: “The beacon is an 'official ' beacon and holds this status as it is on [or as close to as possible] the Meridian line which passes through the town
“Traditionally the beacon has been lit by a member of the Royal Observer Corps
following the stand down of the Observer Corps in 1991
a member of the association has always taken part and lit it with an invitation from the parish council
“The news that our local council were not going to light it has led to the Royal Observer Corps Association approaching SHDC for permission and help to organise and execute the event which is always well attended by the community
“It is traditional throughout the country and we feel we would be letting the people of Holbeach down against the rest of the country if it did not happen.”
which is necessary ro cover the costs of insurance along with hiring toilets and barriers
the ROCA are asking for financial support from you the people of the town to make this happen
refreshments and children's games all on site from 8pm up to the official lighting at 9.30pm
“This will all take place on the beacon site May 8th VE Day
We would appreciate any amount that you could spare to make this happen and look forward to making this a day in our future history and a remarkable memorable event for you and your children and we hope to see you there.”

Pinchbeck United have signed off their Thurlow Nunn League campaign in style
The Knights have ended their maiden campaign in Division One North with an eight-match unbeaten run which also featured five clean sheets
They brought the curtain down on their season on Easter Monday with a 3-2 away victory over neighbours Holbeach United
It ensured Pinchbeck finished on the same amount of points as the Tigers who edged eighth place on goal difference
Knights boss Lewis Thorogood feels his side's strong finish will be a good platform for next season
He commented: "I was pleased with the win on Monday and it is a really good way to sign off the season
"The unbeaten run has been the biggest positive because
the play-offs were looking a distant memory
"It would have been easy to go through the motions but we've made it competitive and a challenge and to finish with eight games unbeaten is fantastic
"It was a good way to finish and we've ended on a high
"It's a real positive and gives us a building block for next season which is ultimately what we wanted to do."
Pinchbeck needed to overturn a six-goal deficit to leapfrog Holbeach in the league standings
And they started strongly in difficult conditions at Carter's Park to take a two-goal lead
They broke the deadlock when a great cross from Josh Panton was met by Ben Howlett who got in front of his defender to head home the opening goal
Pinchbeck could have added to their tally as it needed a fantastic last-ditch challenge to deny JJ Ward while Andre Williams also put a good chance wide
A second goal looked on the cards and it arrived when Krisztian Gagyi drove a cross into the ground before it reared up and flew into the home net
The Knights looked in control of the contest but Holbeach hit back late in the first half when Marley Hamilton raced onto a long clearance to halve the deficit
The goal changed the complexity of the game and Holbeach came out strongly to dominate the early stages of the second period
Pinchbeck weathered the storm and restored their two-goal advantage when Joe Melson played in Howlett from a well-worked set piece to slot home
Holbeach continued to battle and again cut the deficit when Jordan Keeble latched onto a clearance before finishing well past Ben Martin in the Pinchbeck goal
But it wasn't enough to deny Pinchbeck who avenged a Boxing Day defeat against the Tigers who they defeated earlier in the season in the League Cup
Thorogood added: "We would have liked to have finished above Holbeach but we knew it would have been a huge task to turn around a six-goal swing
"We knew Holbeach wouldn't roll over but we have finished level on points with them and had the last kind of say and probably tried to put Boxing Day to bed
"We've won two of the three competitive games against them this season which is a little psychological win although nothing major
to keep everyone going and turn out the results as we have done."
Pinchbeck did lose Josh Doran to an ankle ligament injury with the same fate befalling Holbeach's Ryan Cook
Melson also played on despite sustaining a fractured wrist and broken knuckle after landing awkwardly following a heavy early challenge
They now face a spell on the sidelines with Thorogood hoping they will return for pre-season in less than two months time as Pinchbeck's focus now turns to next term
The Knights boss said: "The work genuinely does start now to get ready for next season because it's only seven weeks away and it will fly by
"We want to hit the ground running and genuinely do want to look at trying next season to challenge for the top five
"We have fallen 15 points short of the play-offs this season and you can easily look back at five or six identified games which we've drawn or lost where we could have picked those points up
"We want to keep the nucleus and body of this team together with some additions to the group which will probably give us that little bit more depth and quality in some areas and then there's nothing stopping us aspiring to be in the top five next season
"It certainly will be the focus and the goal."
Calls have been made for a crossing to be installed on a busy road to help youngsters get to school safely
Holbeach Primary Academy pupils and their families are having to negotiate Boston Road South with the cars which travel ‘damn fast’ from the roundabout
The problem was raised during the annual meeting of Holbeach Parish Council when members were told there is not a lollipop lady or other form of crossing
Coun Isobel Hutchinson told the meeting that she had been approached by the parent of a pupil who is campaigning for a crossing
She told the meeting that there had previously been a lollipop lady but parents had been told that it was now too dangerous to have one
She said: “An awful lot of children cross the road and it is a really busy road
“Currently in town we are having a crossing revamped as it’s deemed to be needed an upgrade
Why on earth with cars speeding down Boston Road
Can we please put pressure to get a crossing on that road?”
Last year Lincolnshire County Council installed a puffin crossing in Spalding Road, Holbeach
as part of a £3.8 million improvement scheme
This is used by families and pupils of the William Stukeley school
The county council is also replacing the existing pedestrian crossing in Fleet Road
with a modern modern low voltage one as part of a £100,000 scheme
Council chairman Peter Savory told the meeting
which took place in Holbeach Methodist Church Hall
that parking around the Boston Road school did not help but agreed action should be taken
He said: “There should be a crossing there - it is a busy road and they come off that roundabout damn fast
It should be an advisory 20mph speed limit but hardly anyone sticks to it.”
- The council will also be meeting with Holbeach United Football Club over a number of issues relating to the Carter’s Park ground and the lease
- Former councillor Pat Ward had written with a number of issues including the Cemetery Chapels
He stated that if the chapels could not be ‘restored economically’ there may be little choice but to demolish them
Deputy clerk Becky Brothwell told the meeting that the chapels are home to bats
- Former councillor Rick Stevens called for two members of the council to resign ‘on behalf of the people of Holbeach’
Coun Isobel Hutchinson said she would not be resigning and that the council had worked more effectively recently

Police are tracking down any CCTV footage of an incident in which a balaclava-clad man assaulted two youngsters
Two teenagers were reported to be assaulted in Fleet Road, Holbeach, yesterday afternoon (Tuesday, February 25) by a man dressed in black shorts and a balaclava
who went onto smash the window of the town’s Co-op store
Since we published the story earlier today
concerns have been raised by a number of people that this man’s behaviour has been an issue for some time
Residents have raised frustrations that action was not taken before the matter was escalated to yesterday’s incident
Police are now asking for witnesses to get in contact

speaking to witnesses and establishing what evidence is available.”

The man is accused of smashing the Co-op window by smashing a rock during the incident which was reported at 4.14pm

Footpaths across the county will be resurfaced in a £1million scheme which is taking place over the summer
Lincolnshire County Counciil has announced plans to improve 77 miles of paths across 177 places, including Grantham, Spalding and Stamford, in the coming months.
The surfacing scheme for paths is due to get underway in April and is set to be completed by the end of October.
Council workers will be applying a thin veneer of material to the path surface, which will take two hours to dry.
A council press release states: “When we’re carrying out the work, we will have to close the path. The path can’t be used while the material is being put down. Pedestrians will be advised to cross to the opposite side of the road at a safe and convenient place and where there are no alternative paths available, our on-site pedestrian marshals will advise and assist you to a point of safety.
“During the works there will be a period where the newly laid surface will not be able to be used for a couple of hours after installation. Our on site crew will work closely with residents and businesses to maintain access and egress.
“Because the micro asphalt process requires a uniform surface to be successful, we will be undertaking patching works ahead of the new material being put down. This will include shifting back any grass and vegetation obstructing the current path, as well adjusting the levels of the ironwork to conform with newly laid material.”

Rayohits radiolincolnshirenewsTeen handed 13 years for attempted murder in HolbeachHe'll serve his sentence in Youth Detention Accommodation
A 17-year-old boy has been sentenced to 13 years in Youth Detention Accommodation for inflicting multiple injuries on a 16-year-old-boy with a broken bottle
The teen who was 16 at the time of the incident cannot be named for legal reasons
He was drinking with the boy in the grounds of a school in Holbeach last July
Officials at Lincoln Crown Court were told how he had left to walk a friend home before returning to collect the 16-year-old boy who was said to be ‘black out drunk’
On his way back to the school he made a 21-minute phone call to a girl
which took a sinister turn when he threatened to kill the drunken boy
The teen told the girl that “this boy’s life is in your hands” and warned that he would slit his throat
The girl called the police and officers later found the drunken boy in a hedge with serious injuries
The defendant had a history of being referred to mental health services
having experienced episodes of psychosis and blackouts
Court officials were told that he had previously assaulted a friend but had no memory of the incident
The 17-year-old was remanded into Youth Detention Accommodation for 11 years
due to not being able to be sentenced to life imprisonment owing to his age
The hearing concludes a meticulous seven-month investigation
Forensic and digital evidence played a pivotal role in this case
What was thought to be a palm print found on the suspect’s bedroom wall
later proved to be positive match for the victim’s blood
Analysis of phone data also located the suspect as being in the vicinity of the school playing field at the time of the offence taking place
not least because it involves children but also because of elements of the case involving the offender’s mental health and the various reasons that led to those personal difficulties
Trying to determine his state of mind at the time he committed the assault was based on the facts of case as presented by witness accounts
This would have been a tough job for the jury due to both the offender’s and the victim’s gaps in memory
There are two very important consequences from today’s verdict: firstly
that the offender has an opportunity to continue to engage in structured support within a secure setting
thereby providing him with the tools that will enable him to eventually lead a life where he can trust himself and where he no longer poses a risk to members of public
that the victim in the case feels that justice has been served following a horrific attack that has left him both physically and emotionally scarred
I hope this result will assist him in gaining some form of closure around events that took place that night.”
