Stage and screen actor who appeared in eight of the saucy Carry On films of the 1960s and 70s
was a prolific television actor and voice artist
and had a stage career that took him to Broadway
but he was best known for appearing in eight Carry On movies
In later years he freely disowned them. “I am not remotely proud of my involvement in the films,” he said in a 2018 interview with Callum J Phoenix for the Retroboy website
adding that Kenneth Williams – who appeared in more of the productions
known for their saucy seaside postcard humour
than any other actor – once advised him: “Don’t let the stigma of the Carry Ons attach itself to you.”
the actor and singer known for his comic monologues and songs – said that during his 10 years in the films he enjoyed his third venture
Holloway played the long-suffering Major Shorthouse of the 3rd Foot and Mouth Regiment
who reports directly to Sir Sidney Ruff-Diamond (Sid James)
the British governor in the north-west province of India
It was downhill from there, with Holloway’s roles including the lecherous coach driver in Carry On Camping (1969), taking girls from Chayste Place finishing school to Devon and, while at a hostel there, tripping over, crashing into Barbara Windsor and accidentally ripping off her nightdress

Holloway was set to have a screen romance with one of the girls
but most of the scenes – including one of him rescuing her from a goat in a shower – ended up on the cutting-room floor
In a similar vein was Carry On Loving (1970)
in which Holloway was a highly strung photographer on a quest to find a well-endowed model
His other Carry On parts were as a railway ticket collector in Follow That Camel (1967); Simmons
a friend of Lewis Boggs (Richard O’Callaghan)
in At Your Convenience (1971); and Major Butcher
He also appeared in the 1973 TV special Carry On Christmas, but eventually turned down the offer of another movie. “My agent got a message from the casting director to say that if I didn’t do the film I would never work with Peter Rogers [the producer] again!” recalled Holloway
In between the Carry On films – which were known for the derisory fees paid to actors
and for which he was never paid more than £300 – Holloway was becoming one of the busiest character actors on television
in a well-received revival of My Fair Lady on Broadway starring Richard Chamberlain as Higgins (Virginia theatre
recreating the role taken by his father in the original 1950s New York and London productions
is understandably very like his own illustrious father
The only son of Stanley Holloway’s second marriage
he was an extra in 1961 in the film Dentist on the Job and an episode of The Avengers
and went to the US to appear in the sitcom Our Man Higgins (1962-63) as Quentin
nephew of the prim English butler played by his father in the starring role
On graduating from Rada in 1963, he joined Beryl Reid and others in the revue All Square
which included a West End run at the Vaudeville theatre
performed by the English Stage Company at the Royal Court
Holloway starred in a revival of Arsenic and Old Lace as Mortimer Brewster
a drama critic dealing with a murderous family and the police (Whitehall and Westminster theatres

Photograph: Steve Burton/Getty ImagesHis screen career was given an early boost when the director Richard Lester cast him in small roles in the Beatles film A Hard Day’s Night (1964) and The Knack… and How to Get It (1965)
although he struggled for a while to get beyond bit parts on the big screen
Television proved more fruitful. He was Corky, hapless friend of the title character created by PG Wodehouse (played by Anton Rodgers)
in Ukridge (1968); Algernon Moncrieff in The Importance of Being Earnest (1972); a mobster in The Sweeney (1975); Jack Favell
in Rebecca (1979); the English politician Harry Cust in Nancy Astor (1982); and Paterson in the Doctor Who adventure Survival (1989)
He voiced the title character in the British cartoon Captain Z and the Zee Zone (1991-92)
After providing various voices for the American animated series James Bond Jr (1991)
he divided his time between California and Britain
left stage acting behind and became a successful voice artist on US television series such as Dan Dare
Father of the Pride (2004-05) and Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2010-2020)
Holloway played Uncle George in the TV series My Uncle Silas (2001-03)
to the actors Zena Walker (1971) and Debbie Wheeler (1991)
from a brief relationship in the mid-1970s with the writer and actor Tessa Dahl

The 27-year-old, unbeaten indoors in 11 seasons, clocked 7.42 seconds for victory, with France’s Wilhem Belocian taking silver in 7.54sec, just one-hundredth of a second ahead of China’s Liu Junxi.
Holloway’s victory maintained a win streak that has seen him go undefeated in indoor hurdles races since March 2014, when he was 16 years old, including all preliminaries and in combined events.
Read moreIncluding the 55m hurdles and 60m hurdles, he has now won 94 consecutive indoor races.
His victory was the first time a hurdler had won three successive titles – American Allen Johnson having won three titles, but not in a row (1995, 2003, 2004).
“To win three indoors and three outdoors, I think I’m the first person in history to ever do that. That’s an amazing stat,” said Holloway, whose outdoor successes came in Doha, Eugene and Budapest (2019, 2022, 2023).
“It was great. This one was a little bit different. I didn’t have two great rounds, and had to rely on my experience to get me through the final.
“But I knew what I had to do, I knew what I was missing. With that being said, a big shout-out to the sports staff. Everybody was telling me, ’You’ve done this a million times before, you’ve just got to do it again’.”
Holloway said that the race could well be his last hurrah, with a new discipline on the horizon.
“I think I can put grace in it and hang up the 60m hurdles and try out a new event next year,” he said. “That’s something I can think about.”
Coming through the NCAA system at the University of Florida, Holloway competed not only in the long and short hurdles, but also in the flat sprints over 60 and 100m, as well as relays. He has a long jump best of 8.17m from 2018.
He added that he had his eye on a potential fourth world outdoor title when Tokyo hosts the next championships in September.
“We’ve got the 110m hurdles coming up in the next couple of months, so I will put my best foot forward for that,” said Holloway, the Olympic champion whose 12.81sec in the US Olympic trials in 2021 make him the second-fastest man in history at the event.
“It’s a world championships, you’ll always have nerves for the world championships wherever you’re at.
“I just want to continue to work hard, figure out ways to continue to win, perfect my craft, and continue to challenge myself and my sports staff and coaches to get better.”
In other events on Saturday, American Christopher Bailey won his maiden global crown in the men’s 400m in 45.08sec, leading a US podium sweep ahead of compatriots Brian Faust and Jacory Patterson.

We are very sad to hear of the death yesterday of an important figure in British music
pianist/composer/arranger/ music director Laurie Holloway at the age of 86
Our condolences to his daughters Abigail – a consistent friend and wonderful supporter of UKJN – and Karon
Here is the statement from Abigail and Karon: “Our father was a much loved and wonderful person
those he worked with and many who followed his illustrious musical career
He was extremely proud of the charity The Montgomery Holloway Music Trust that he created with his late wife the singer Marion Montgomery supporting young singers
for which he was awarded an MBE by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II
He will be deeply missed and remembered with great affection.”
Part of Laurie’s story was his role as Music Director of the Parkinson show on the BBC, and we were honoured when he contributed a tribute and memory of his good friend Sir Michael Parkinson to the UKJN site in 2023 – TRIBUTE.
We will have tributes, but in the meantime, this film biography of Laurie’s wife, the great Marion Montgomery (1934-2002) from 2013 vividly tells another part of the story of an inspirational figure.
Laurence Holloway MBE. Born Oldham, 31 March 1938. Died Berkshire 9 January 2025. In sadness
A lovely man, a GREAT friend and outstanding man of music.
A great musical director who drove the Parkinson’s Show’s music and became a close neighbour and friend of Mike’s. He moved on to Strictly and became musical director there too. Lovely man and a sad loss. RIP
I produced a few sessions with Laurie and Marian for Radio 2 in the 1990s and my abiding memory is of a thoroughly decent guy. His amazing career on top ranking shows like Parkinson and Strictly speaks for itself To think that he was the MD for Downtown, it doesn’t get any better than that. RIP.

Lost fans will undoubtedly be ecstatic over a key cast member’s long-awaited screen reunion with JJ Abrams
Josh Holloway was a fan-favourite star of the hit ABC drama when it aired from 2004 to 2010
After starting out as an unlikeable antihero of sorts
the character embedded his way into the hearts of viewers
with Holloway’s performance regularly hailed as one of the best in Lost’s six-year history
The actor, 55, has starred in a handful of credits since Lost drew to its divisive end
with roles in TV shows such as Colony and Yellowstone
He also starred in the 2011 Mission: Impossible film
But Holloway’s new project is particularly exciting for Lost fans as it sees him reunite with the show’s co-creator JJ Abrams
is a 1970s-set crime drama following the FBI’s first Black woman agent (Rachel Hilsin) who teams up with Holloway’s getaway driver to take down a crime syndicate
The show’s journey to screen has been arduous. The pilot was shot in 2021 and reshot two years later before production was stalled due to the Writers Guild of America strikes in Hollywood
“It was quite a journey – life does that to you sometimes,” Holloway told Variety of the show’s delay. “Our perseverance comes through in the show. Usually with regime changes, they clean the slate a lot. I was proud every time we survived, because it meant they knew they had something good.”
Holloway also said that it was an immediate “yes” when Abrams asked him about starring in the series: “Are you kidding me? He called me up and asked if I had a minute, and the answer is ‘yes’. Always ‘yes’. Whatever he is asking. It was just so exciting to talk to him.”
Abrams worked on the series with LaToya Morgan, who directed several episodes of the sci-fi martial arts show Into the Badlands.
“She brings this coolness to the table, and a different perspective than JJ ,” Holloway said, adding: “Their combination is fantastic.
“They are so agile but not rigid, it moves the show forward in a way that is subtle but poignant, where the audience can really take it in and don’t even know exactly what happened.”
Duster begins in the US on Max on 15 May. A UK release date is yet to be announced.

Laurie Holloway was a dear friend to both my parents as well as being a surrogate Uncle to me and my two brothers
my family now have another large hole in our lives
But at least my Dad has now got his mate with him so that they can again discuss
Basie and the other greats of the music that they shared a deep love for
He also happened to be a gifted man who wore his talents lightly without any fanfare
It was a privilege for me to work with him when I produced the Parkinson show at ITV and he was the Musical Director and the Leader of the last Big Band in captivity
he dictated an email to his daughter Abigail to be sent to me
He signed if off with ‘See you at the cricket Club’
The Cricket Club was Maidenhead and Bray where Laurie often performed alongside Kenny Lynch

Joni Mitchell once observed that you don’t know what you’ve got ’til it’s gone

except perhaps this foreword – reprinted below – that my Dad wrote for Laurie’s biography ‘Confessions of a Piano Player.’

This month marks a decade since the thrilling battled unfolded between two British athletes at the European Cross Country Championships in Samokov
Gemma Steel and Kate Avery were locked in an intense rivalry
The pair were racing side by side for majority of the 6km course
but Steel was the one who would win the battle and come out victorious – upgrading her bronze medal from 2011 and silver medal from 2013
While only one runner could claim the individual title
the British team still had much to celebrate
Steel and Avery were able to share victory in the team race as they won the title by over 50 points
Steph Twell and Lily Partridge finished seventh and 11th respectively
while Sonia Samuels and Elle Vernon both finished in the top 20
A dip into the AW archive gives a further look into what unfolded on the day as we reported: "Gemma Steel became Britain’s first senior women’s European champion since Hayley Yelling in 2009
narrowly outdipping team-mate Kate Avery after a remarkably tight race
"Steel had started arguably as favourite for the senior women’s race
having won the British trial and finished third and then second on her last two appearances at the European Cross Country Championships
Avery was more of an unknown quantity despite having last month won the high-quality NCAA Championships in the United States
"The two Brits were neck and neck out on their own in front for the last two and a half laps (3km)
each one testing the other but unable to establish daylight
It came down then to a sprint finish at the end of a thrilling duel with Steel just having enough time to raise her arms in celebration
but the actual margin was two tenths of a second
The duo were 25 seconds in front of the bronze medallist
Steel has continued to compete in cross country and road events
including a recent 18th place at the Euro Cross trials in Liverpool and a victory at the Great North 10km in September
won another silver medal at the championships in 2015 but has transitioned away from the traditional track and cross-country scene
where she has secured multiple podium finishes
Kate Avery – running to new heights

Seb Coe: "Change is hard but we know how to do it"
pianist and musical director on popular TV shows such as Parkinson and Strictly Come Dancing
In 1971, when the BBC chat show Parkinson began, its host, Michael Parkinson
asked his friend Laurie Holloway to be the musical director
“I unfortunately had to refuse because I was engaged to be the musical director for Engelbert Humperdinck,” said Holloway
“We stayed good friends although I had to turn the offer down.”
finally had the chance to play the “dat-diddly-da-da-da
dat-diddly-da-da-da” jazzy tune and continued with Parkinson when the programme switched to ITV (2004-07)
As well as performing the opening and closing theme
Holloway – distinctive for his silver hair and goatee beard – came up with appropriate arrangements to herald guests
“The play-on that I wasn’t allowed to do was Two Little Boys for Ant and Dec,” he said
“The show producers thought the idea was too cheeky.”
Another star who valued Holloway’s talents, on stage and screen over three decades from the 1980s, was Barry Humphries
Humphries described Holloway and his other accompanists as his “closest companions”
adding: “Very often the show is just me on stage with a pianist accompanying the songs and filling in during quick changes before the rousing gladioli chorus at the end … A good pianist will often know the show better than the artiste himself.”
To Holloway’s surprise, he was also approached to become musical director on the TV show Strictly Come Dancing
“I told the BBC I didn’t do dance numbers,” he explained
“But they liked the Parkinson band and asked if I could do the same thing for the show.”
leading the live band and composing the arrangements
left after the first three series (2004-05)
“It was an awful lot of work and an awful lot of writing
involving 14 musical arrangements a week,” he said
Politicians often say they are leaving to spend more time with their families and that’s what I actually did.”
Showing his talent for composing original music, Holloway wrote the theme tunes for popular ITV series such as Punchlines (1981-84), Game for a Laugh (1981-85) and Beadle’s About (1986-96)
‘That’s it!’ It was just two [different] notes
On leaving Greenhill grammar school in the town
Holloway spent six months as an apprentice draughtsman before turning professional as a musician aged 16
spending two years with Syd Willmott and his Band
Stints followed with bands run by Arthur Plant in Dundee and others on transatlantic liners booked by the bandleader Geraldo’s agency
Holloway spent two years playing piano in Ronnie Rand’s dance orchestra at the Astoria
often rushing off at the end of the evening to play at the Gargoyle strip club
before performing with bands led by Johnny Gray and Cyril Stapleton
He began to get session work on records such as the 1964 Petula Clark hit Downtown and was pianist and musical director for two sellout London Palladium shows the same year by Judy Garland and her daughter
He said Garland “wasn’t the greatest singer
but she was so emotional – a bit like Shirley Bassey or Dorothy Squires”
Holloway was soon able to pick and choose his assignments and once turned down the chance to work with Barbra Streisand. “I found the voice a bit thin,” he said
In the West End, he was in the pit band for Lionel Bart’s Blitz (Adelphi, 1962-63), composed the score for the farce Instant Marriage (Piccadilly, 1964-65), with the book and lyrics by Bob Grant
and was musical director of Piaf (Piccadilly
Grant Holloway won his third successive world indoor 60m hurdles title
taking gold in Nanjing in 7.42 to extend his 11-year winning streak
winning by 0.12 from France's Wilhem Belocian
China's Liu Junxi was just a further 0.01 behind
The dominance of the 27-year-old US athlete was never in doubt
having clocked a world lead of 7.36 in Lievin last month
Here in Nanjing he raced to times of 7.49 and 7.48 to top the standings in the heats and semis
the reigning Olympic champion was a tad slow out of the blocks but quickly recovered to distinguish himself from the rest of the field to claim his third consecutive world indoor gold
His winning time of 7.42 was 0.15 shy of his own world indoor record
but he still won by a comfortable margin and his 11-year winning streak doesn’t look to be in danger
the three-time world outdoor champion is only the second man in World Indoors history to claim three 60m hurdles titles
following the footsteps of his compatriot Allen Johnson who claimed gold in 1995
is the first man to claim three consecutive titles in the event
“This one was a little bit different
and had to rely on my experience to get me through the final
But I knew what I had to do; I knew what I was missing
‘you've done this a million times before
I think I'm the first person in history to ever do that
and hang up the 60m hurdles and try out a new event next year
That's something I can think about.”
For Frenchman Belocian who claimed the silver medal
his position in Nanjing is certainly an upgrade from his eighth place in Belgrade in 2022 and the first senior global medal for the 29-year-old who recently won another silver at the European Indoor Championships
China’s Liu Junxi gave the home crowd something to cheer for by snatching the bronze medal in the keenly contested race
The host country had two representatives in the men’s 60m hurdles final
with national indoor champion Weibo Qin finishing eighth in a time of 7.72

The inaugural BMF title began with Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz at UFC 244
and a new one was minted between Poirier and Justin Gaethje at UFC 291
One crucial flaw with the belt is the fact it's currently locked at lightweight
Thomas believes this is a good a reason as any to retire the belt at UFC 318
John David Mercer-Imagn ImagesDin Thomas suggests BMF belt end with Holloway-Poirier 3Speaking with MMA Junkie's Mike Bohn
Thomas got brutally honest on the gimmick title
the game ain't really full of BMFs like it used to be," Thomas explained
"Now we've got a bunch of athletes lobbying for money and money fights
So I think they should just do away with it."If they retire the BMF belt with Dustin
Retiring this version of the BMF belt with a Poirier victory would make sense
Then the UFC could make the decision to bring it back in another division
Thomas makes a point about BMF contenders; most of them are landlocked at lightweight

Dustin Poirier will face Max Holloway for a third time in the main event of UFC 318 in New Orleans
They first met back at UFC 143 where Poirier submitted Holloway before the two legends ran it back in an incredible five-round war at UFC 236 in 2019
‘The Diamond’ has previously stated that the likes of Justin Gaethje and Ilia Topuria were the two names that he had in mind for his last dance
Another fan favorite lightweight that the Louisiana native has history with has now revealed that the UFC planned to have him compete on the same night so that he could step into the main event if needed
A lot of fight fans were happy to see the trilogy fight between Dustin Poirier and Max Holloway come together for several reasons
Not only are they two of the most exciting fighters on the roster
it’s a perfect way for ‘The Diamond’ to ride off into the sunset after competing against a fellow legend in front of his home crowd
the UFC had already taken precautions just in case anything happened to either of the two men involved in the UFC 318 main event by attempting to put plans in place for a backup fighter
Dan Hooker was set to face Justin Gaethje at UFC 313 in March until a hand injury forced ‘The Hangman’ out of the five-round co-main event
The 35-year-old stated after the injury that he was hoping to return in the summer with UFC 317 on International Fight Week being a potential destination
During a recent appearance on Sky Sports New Zealand
Hooker revealed that the promotion had contacted him about getting booked for July 19 so that he could be the backup fighter
“I did know that this fight was going down for a long time because they wanted me to backup for this fight
just fight any old lightweight on the card and if either of these guys got injured
the UFC wanted me to step in and backup for the BMF title.”
Hooker went on to say that due to the need for another surgery
it looks unlikely that he will be able to make this date so the UFC may choose to go in another direction
“So it would’ve been an incredible opportunity
Unfortunately I need a second surgery on my hand
there’s too much scar tissue… it’s not a major surgery
they just need to cut it open and clean out some scar tissue
That would put me 9 weeks before this fight
so it would take kind of a perfect storm for me to be able to be ready by then so it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen.”
Dan Hooker being the backup fighter for UFC 318 makes perfect sense even if a matchup between him and either Dustin Poirier or Max Holloway isn’t as big as the trilogy we’re getting
Hooker and Poirier put on an instant classic back in June of 2020 and somehow
we’ve never seen ‘The Hangman’ take on Holloway
He certainly fits the BMF credentials and there aren’t many names that will be able to fill this replacement role because of how specific this fight is
Justin Gaethje would be another strong choice but in the event that Poirier gets injured
fans might not clamor towards the prospect of seeing Holloway face ‘The Highlight’ for a second time following his dominant win over the former BMF champion at UFC 300

A pair of devastating finishes put Ilia Topuria and Max Holloway on a collision course and Saturday in Abu Dhabi
the two will do battle in the UFC 308 main event with the victor walking away as featherweight champion
The UFC’s annual autumn trek to the United Arab Emirates has traditionally produced massive championship moments and fight cards filled with thrilling efforts
and this instalment shouldn’t be any different
as the captivating headlining bout is joined by a fascinating co-main event that was delayed earlier in the year and host of intriguing matches featuring established contenders
Order UFC 308: Topuria vs Holloway
This card is loaded with talent and should be a banger
Ilia Topuria makes the first defense of his featherweight title against former champion Max Holloway in one of the most anticipated fights of the year
registering a breathtaking second-round knockout win over titleholder Alexander Volkanovski
leaving the Australian slumped against the fence
The win moved Topuira to 7-0 in the UFC and 15-0 overall
making “El Matador” the first Georgian and Spanish champion in UFC history
Holloway’s path to potentially reclaiming the featherweight title seemed blocked as long as Volkanovski was still atop the division
“Blessed” then went out at UFC 300 and claimed the BMF title from Justin Gaethje
wrapping up a dominant effort by knocking out “The Highlight” in the center of the Octagon just before the buzzer
even the verbal sparring that has been taking place between the two
Topuria is confident and incredibly skilled
while Holloway is one of the most battle-tested fighters on the roster
making this an exceptional clash between a burgeoning superstar and one of the most popular fighters on the roster
UFC 308 Embedded
and will set a new course for the 145-pound weight class heading into 2025
Originally scheduled to take place in June
Robert Whittaker and Khamzat Chimaev will finally share the Octagon together this weekend in Abu Dhabi
Whittaker remains an ever-present threat in the middleweight division; a former champion whose only losses have come against current champ Dricus Du Plessis and former two-time titleholder Israel Adesanya
He followed up his unanimous decision win over Paulo Costa at UFC 298 in February with a first-round knockout of Ikram Aliskerov in June
further solidifying his place as an elite contender in the process
After an unmatched three-month stretch to begin his career
Chimaev has become a talented enigma in recent years
“Borz” has only fought four times in the last four years
having edged out former welterweight champ Kamaru Usman in a short-notice pairing in Abu Dhabi last October
Max Holloway Gym Visit Interview
If Whittaker can become the first to turn back Chimaev while securing a third win in 2024
he’ll head into next year in prime position to challenge for the title again
while if the undefeated grappler adds Whittaker’s name to his resume
his case for a championship opportunity will be difficult to overlook

Light heavyweight contenders Magomed Ankalaev and Aleksandar Rakic clash in a critical matchup just a few weeks after Alex Pereira successfully defended his title for a third time this year
Ankalaev opened the year with a second-round knockout win over Johnny Walker in the first main event of 2024
resolving things with the Brazilian after their meeting at UFC 294 last October ended in a no contest following an illegal knee
The 32-year-old standout is unbeaten in his last dozen fights
and brings one of the most complete skill sets in the division into the Octagon
After suffering a serious knee injury in his May 2022 meeting with former champ Jan Blachowicz
landing on the wrong end of things in a clash with another ex-titleholder
The Austrian standout was 6-1 in the UFC prior to his current two-fight skid
with his lone setback coming by debated split decision against Volkan Oezdemir at the end of 2019
most anticipate that the winner of this one will find themselves standing opposite “Poatan” next year
as the Brazilian has done away with the current crop of top contenders
and the victor here will have a tremendous case for challenging for the title
The main card opens in the middleweight division
as intriguing striker Shara Magomedov faces off with Dana White’s Contender Series (DWCS) grad Armen Petrosyan
FULL FIGHTS: Holloway vs Gaethje | Topuria vs Volkanovski | Whittaker vs Aliskerov | Chimaev vs Usman
