A FORMER Holywell Lake pub has been given a new lease of life as the passion project of its new owners who have transformed the venue into an antiques stop.
The Holywell Inn Antiques and Licensed Tearooms was opened by owners John and Nicky Pope recently (Thursday, April 10), after the couple purchased the property in November of last year.
Originally from Wiveliscombe, the two have chosen to return “home” having spent nearly a decade together in Hampshire.
Nicky said: “I loved where we lived, but it wasn’t home. I wanted to come home again.”
The couple grew up together, but it wasn’t until more than 34 years later that the two would reunite, to begin a life together in the south of England.
It was there that Nicky and John established a passion for antiques, which they now hope to share with locals in their home county.
With a background in catering on Nicky’s part, and a knowledge of silver service from John’s time in the Army, the two have decided to combine their love for the pre-loved with tea and cake.
John said: “We just thought, we want it all under one roof, in a place where we can meet and interact with people.
Nicky added: “Down this way, people are so much more friendly. If you go into a shop or walk down the street, people say hello.”
The couple insist on serving almost exclusively local produce and offer a range of fresh bakes and Somerset brews (both alcoholic and non), which can be enjoyed while sat amongst their eclectic collection of antique furniture and nick knacks.
The shop and tearooms is now open from Thursday to Saturday, and on the first Sunday of the month, between 9.30am-4.30pm

Holywell Town came from two goals down to triumph 4-2 over Denbigh Town at Central Park on Saturday afternoon.
Denbigh’s new signing Bobby Beaumont marked his debut with the opening goal on 18 minutes
before Nathan Brown doubled the lead just after the half hour mark with a pinpoint effort from distance – his fourth league goal in three games.
Staring at a first defeat since the end of October
Holywell boss Johnny Haseldin brought on captain Danny Andrews and Ilan ap Gareth at half-time and the duo helped turn the game around.
Jamie Breese laid off Jake Cooke to pull one goal back from close range in 57th minute
before the Wellmen were level three minutes later as Ap Gareth – who only returned to the club from Gresford on Thursday – smashed home a loose ball after Breese’s shot was saved.
Ap Gareth completed the turnaround on 75 minutes in similar fashion to his first goal
tucking away the rebound from Cooke’s initially saved effort
He capped a stunning second debut with six minutes left on the clock as he sent in a corner which struck Denbigh defender Mackenzie Stark and went in to secure a fourth consecutive win for Holywell.
Buckley Town were held to a 1-1 draw at home against Guilsfield on Saturday
which Bucks boss Asa Hamilton described as “the worst performance ever under me”.
It was in fact Hamilton’s men who found the breakthrough five minutes into the second half when Liam Driscoll tapped home from Max Moore’s low cross.
Guilsfield levelled just before the hour mark as Joe Haycock bagged his eighth league goal of the season
The Guils remain unbeaten in five matches since Gavin Allen’s appointment as manager
and they are now up into the top half.
Jonathan Collo’s stoppage-time penalty earned Llay Miners Welfare an impressive point in a 1-1 draw at home against Bangor 1876.
Mason Blackwell-Jones took his league goal tally for the season to nine as he opened the scoring for Bangor in the 63rd minute with a composed finish from James Barry’s cross.
That seemed to have secured the visitors all three points
but Llay won a penalty eight minutes into stoppage time which Collo calmly converted to ensure the spoils were shared at The Ring
