These actors totally disappeared into their roles the vast majority of actors desperately want to be seen and recognised in movies because that's how you become a known quantity with audiences and get more But some actors also clearly enjoy the opportunity to entirely disappear into a role where they just won't be recognised allowing them to surprise audiences when they finally realise who they are And that's clearly the case with these 10 actors in these roles they were tough for general audiences to spot More often than not they underwent a radical makeup transformation which made them tricky to notice but it might've also been an early role before they hit the big time or they were simply presented to audiences in an unexpected context these actors all managed to go totally unnoticed in these films enough that when folks learned about it years or even decades later It's a testament to both the makeup artists and the actors themselves that they managed to slink in and slink out without most viewers noticing.. Let's kick this list off with an actor who evidently loves disappearing as far into his characters as humanly possible - and ideally We're talking of course about the great Gary Oldman who's never seen a makeup chair he didn't love spending hours sitting in.  And for all of his many stunning transformations over the years the one that manages to sneak past most people Oldman underwent a radical makeup job to portray Verger a surviving victim of Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) with a severely disfigured face.  all of Oldman's most recognisable facial features are totally concealed underneath the scar prosthetics aided by Verger's near total lack of lips and eyelids.  Oldman spent five hours per day in the makeup chair to become Verger yet because the actor had a billing dispute with the studio during production he ultimately requested to be uncredited for his performance making it even trickier for audiences to initially figure out who they were looking at His credit was ultimately restored for Hannibal's home video release WhatCulture is part of Future plc, an international media group and leading digital publisher. Blockchain data shows that long-time supporters such as Galaxy Digital and Paradigm have been slashing their Ether (ETH) holdings in recent weeks But the story isn’t entirely about Ethereum’s collapse Some whales are treating this downturn as a rare buying opportunity Even those who are selling Ether can’t fully let it go Institutions are dumping Ethereum, but it’s the ex they keep checking on. It’s not entirely out of the picture — just benched while they explore options like Solana (SOL) In recent weeks, blockchain analysts on the lookout for large crypto movements spotted several institutions moving ETH out of their tagged wallets, likely to sell. Lookonchain reported that Galaxy Digital deposited 65,600 ETH ($105.5 million) to Binance The investment firm’s Ether exposure rose to as high as around 98,000 coins in February but that has dropped to almost 68,000 ETH at the time of writing Galaxy’s holdings may have declined in recent weeks, but they’re still higher compared to the start of the year. Its Ether holdings reflect a broader trend seen in Ethereum-based investment products. He then wrapped up the fight as he won by technical knockout in the eighth round. At the time of the stoppage, the three judges had him leading 68-63. Inoue admitted that he was stunned by the knockdown in the second round He said: "By watching tonight's fight everyone is well aware that I like to brawl "I was very surprised [at the knockdown] but I took things calmly and put myself together I made sure not to take that punch again." It was his first bout in Las Vegas for four years and he was keen to hail the support he received He added: "The fans here were supportive and great "I hope I was able to entertain them." Cardenas was knocked down for the first time in the fight in the seventh round But he insisted after the defeat that he was up against "pound-for-pound one of the greatest fighters on the planet." Read our Privacy notice Ryan Garcia’s left hook is his greatest weapon; he knows it Devin Haney found this out the hard way last year when Garcia caught him with a powerful left hook in the first round This set the tone for a match in which he would emerge victorious via majority decision after putting Haney on the floor three times “My left hook is my left hook.” he said in a post-fight interview Garcia failed to make weight for the fight and the result was later overturned to a no-contest after adverse findings from a test for performance enhancing drugs – Garcia maintains that he never intentionally took any banned substance Here’s the secret formula to his lethal left hook In his book Outliers: The Story of Success  Canadian journalist and author Malcolm Gladwell popularised a principle called the 10,000-hour rule he theorised that mastering a skill requires 10,000 hours of appropriate practice Given Garcia started boxing at just seven years old amassed a fight record of 215 wins and 15 losses as an amateur That experience has enabled him to master the left hook “Garcia will have done an awful lot of heavy bag work over the years which will have developed the strength of his body and shoulders from a young age,” says Chris Spacagna a former amateur fighter and boxing coach who specialises in movement mechanics and has worked with athletes including current British and Commonwealth champion Lewis Edmondson He adds: “Hitting boxing mitts will also have allowed him to focus on throwing his left hook with a lot of speed and power while working on improving his overall technique.” Speed and power are only two pieces of the puzzle that is Garcia’s left hook former European lightweight champion and a member of the 2012 Swedish Olympic boxing team says that Garcia’s left hook is the product of several factors If you sign up to this service we will earn commission This revenue helps to fund journalism across The Independent He explains: “Garcia’s got fast-twitch dominant muscle fibers His slightly longer reach and lean frame help generate leverage at high velocity almost relaxed position makes it unpredictable.” and deception makes it a dangerous weapon,” he continues he capitalised on timing — catching Haney in moments where his guard dropped or his weight shifted wrong and Haney simply couldn’t read it fast enough The knockdowns weren’t just from power: they were also from precision and timing.” and this was on show during the overturned Haney fight known as a defensive fighter who can move and block punches just didn’t see those left hooks coming,” he explains “Garcia was able to capitalise on a mistake that Haney makes dropping his right hand when he throws his jab His counter left hook hurt Haney as early as 40 seconds into the first round and resulted in the three knockdowns later in the fight.” Garcia was on the undercard for Canelo Alvarez’s clash with Sergey Kovalev the fighter said he ‘had to train in a garage’ because he ‘had no money for a gym membership’ Spacagna believes old-school strength and conditioning tools will have been his bread and butter bodyweight exercises such as press-up variations higher-rep sets are likely to have been used to achieve a challenging stimulus for the body “Doing this from a young age has allowed him to build high levels of muscular endurance “To develop that level of speed and precision,” he says “Garcia’s likely likely focused on ballistic movements core rotation drills and a lot of reaction-based work Isometric holds and rotational medicine ball throws probably played a role in building power and strength stability as well which is key for movements like hooks in boxing.” have worked with a medicine ball to do rotational slams - a move that should help develop explosive rotational force will strength core control along the same plane as a hook with single-arm landmine presses with rotation being utilised to build shoulder stability More recent footage from Garcia’s YouTube channel shows a gym workout comprising a heavy dose of power-focussed training He works through explosive exercises such as box jumps which focus on rate of force development (i.e moving weight quickly) rather than maximal strength Partial pin squats are a favourite among boxing strength and conditioning coaches strengthening the legs in a range specific to the sport Garcia performs them from spotter arms set at around naval height with a light-moderate weight and resistance bands anchored on the floor then attached to either end of the barbell Bands offer a unique resistance profile as Garcia is tasked with creating as much force as possible as he lifts the barbell from the spotter’s arms the load he needs to overcome will increase as he lifts the bar providing an extra power-developing challenge Biomechanics refer to the way the body moves Garcia is able to generate explosive speed and power through wide rotational movements to deliver an effective left hook he has the ability to create a lot of rotation through his hips thoracic [or mid] spine and shoulder girdle,” Spacagna explains wider swing that we see from some other boxers; he has the ability to create a short He adds: “It is possible that Garcia has a narrow infrasternal angle of his ribcage [the angle at the base of the front of your rib cage] which predisposes him to having a greater rotational bias in the structure of his body allowing him to create greater amounts of rotation shows why Garcia can throw his left hook from any distance as his sharper rotation gives him the ability to generate a lot of velocity from both shorter and longer ranges Spacagna also highlights a split-second delay between the point Garcia’s body begins its rotation and the moment his arm is propelled forward “This allows Garcia to get the maximum stretch through his left pec before throwing his left hook,” he says “He uses his arm almost like a whip to generate very fast movement.” Elite athletes can usually be found at the intersection between hard work you are unlikely to see sub-six foot basketball players in the NBA or top-tier marathon runners who naturally sit at 80-plus kilograms “It’s clear from watching Garcia that he possesses explosive speed and power which leads me to assume he is biased towards being a fast-twitch muscle fibre athlete,” says Spacagna Training can influence the proportion of muscle fibre types to some extent, but 2022 research published in the Sports, Exercise and Nutritional Genomics  journal states that the “estimated heritability of muscle fibre-type composition is greater than 50 per cent”.  For this reason, it is likely that Garcia has a genetic predisposition to being an explosive athlete.  Though he was born and raised in California, Garcia often gives a nod to his Mexican heritage during fights. And the rich history of powerful left hooks among Mexican fighters such as Rubén Olivares is likely to have inspired him to develop this attribute for himself, Spacagna says.  “Garcia has built his style around his left hook,” he says, “and everything he does is designed to set up and land it – something he has practised thousands of times since he was a boy. We also have to consider his Mexican heritage, and Mexico has a history of great fighters with fantastic left hooks. This would have influenced Garcia into hyper-focusing his training and putting more time into developing this punch.” Drills and training protocols for developing a powerful left hook  “If you want to improve your own left hook, you must shadow box,” says Spacagna. “You may find this boring, but it is key to improvement. You need to stand in front of a mirror and watch yourself throw left hooks for a lot of reps. This will allow you to focus on improving your technique. Slow it down at first, then gradually speed it up when you have learned the technique.” “Find the heaviest or hardest bag in your gym and practice throwing left hooks as hard and fast as you can,” Spacagna recommends. “This will build up your shoulder strength and capacity to throw that hard left hook, as the bag isn’t going to be moving around after you hit it.” “Doing wide push ups with a slow eccentric [ or lowering ] phase followed by an explosive concentric [ or upwards ] phase will allow you to get maximum stretch through the chest before exploding up out of this position,” says Spacagna. “This will get the chest used to lengthening and then shortening, creating a fast rate of force development which you will use when throwing your left hooks.” “In boxing, I feel core work has changed over the years from sit-ups and Russian twists to exercises such as the plank and bracing exercises with no movement through the core at all,” Spacagna says.  He adds: “If you are going to develop a fast, powerful left hook, the musculature of the core needs to lengthen. Exercises such as cable wood chops, half-kneeling medicine ball throws and Russian twists are great exercises to build that rotational capacity in your core, in order to throw an explosive left hook.” Join thought-provoking conversations, follow other Independent readers and see their replies {"adUnitPath":"71347885/_main_independent/gallery","autoGallery":true,"disableAds":false,"gallery":[{"data":{"title":"Ryan Garcia lands a left hook against Luke Campbell","description":"DALLAS, TEXAS - JANUARY 02: Ryan Garcia lands a left hook against Luke Campbell during the WBC Interim Lightweight Title fight at American Airlines Center on January 02, 2021 in Dallas, Texas. reconsider award based on the judgment in entirely separate litigation proceedings a concessionaire responsible for constructing and operating a toll road and bridge between Rosario and Victoria (pictured) The case has its roots in a 25-year concession contract signed in 1998 as part of Argentina’s privatisation reforms aimed at attracting foreign investment Webuild invested USD 33.2 million in the project and held a 26% stake in PdL the collapse of a loan agreement with the Inter-American Development Bank and the enactment of the Emergency Law in 2002 during Argentina’s economic crisis The law de-pegged the Argentine peso from the US dollar converted public contracts originally made in dollars into pesos and froze toll rates severely impacting the financial viability of the concession Webuild alleged that Argentina failed to restore the “economic equilibrium of the concession” hindered investment and ultimately terminated the concession contract in 2014 without adequate compensation including violations of the fair and equitable treatment (FET) standard non-discrimination provisions and unlawful expropriation Argentina countered that the financial difficulties faced by PdL were due to the company’s mismanagement and failure to secure financing arguing that its measures were essential to safeguard its economy during the crisis The tribunal issued its decision on liability and quantum on 3 March 2023 finding Argentina liable for breaching the BIT’s FET standard It ruled that Argentina had violated Article 2.2 of the BIT by failing to restore the economic equilibrium of the concession within a reasonable time after the end of the economic emergency while also noting that “Argentina behaved in an arbitrary particularly in its failure to renegotiate the concession contract and its termination of the contract in 2014 It rejected Argentina’s defence of necessity stating that the measures taken were not the only means to address the economic crisis and that Argentina had contributed to the situation through its own actions Argentina subsequently asked the tribunal to reconsider its Decision on Liability citing a judgment issued on 27 June 2024 by the Federal Court on Administrative-Contentious Matters in the PdL Case That PdL judgment concluded that PdL’s financial difficulties were caused by its failure to secure financing and upheld the legality of the concession contract’s termination due to PdL’s dissolution Argentina argued that the PdL judgment constituted a “new and relevant fact” that warranted reconsideration and claimed that the Tribunal’s failure to align its decision with the PdL judgment would exceed its powers under the ICSID Convention and risk annulment of the award asserting that the tribunal’s decision on liability was final and binding under the principle of res judicata It argued that the PdL judgment was irrelevant to the arbitration as Webuild’s claims under the BIT were distinct from PdL’s contractual claims in those proceedings contending that the BIT imposes obligations beyond those of domestic law and that a breach of contract does not equate to a breach of treaty The tribunal rejected Argentina’s request for reconsideration reaffirming the clear distinctions between the arbitration and the PdL case emphasising that Webuild’s claims arose under the BIT and were governed by international law whereas the PdL case involved a different cause of action The tribunal maintained that Argentina’s prolonged failure to restore the concession’s equilibrium after 2006 was the primary cause of PdL’s economic collapse and reiterated its earlier finding that Argentina’s conduct violated the FET standard The tribunal therefore awarded Webuild USD 97.4 million in damages representing the value of its equity and debt stakes in PdL as of the valuation date of 31 August 2014 It also ordered Argentina to pay pre-award interest at a rate of 4% per annum and post-award interest at 6% per annum The total amount due as of the date of the award with the tribunal also making an order as to costs ruling that Argentina must reimburse Webuild USD 5.67 million in legal costs and expenses including USD 233,282.50 incurred in responding to Argentina’s request for reconsideration the tribunal comprised Lucinda Low (president) Professor Kaj Hobér and Professor Jürgen Kurtz Webuild was represented by Roberto Aguirre Luzi Juan Manuel Poggio Aguerre and Esteban Sánchez of King & Spalding The Argentine Republic was represented by its own legal team led by treasury lawyer Santiago María Castro Videla Following last year’s dismissal of Argentina’s interpretation of the statute of limitations an Italian construction company is demanding expeditious enforcement The round-by-round call tonight West Ham United didn’t exactly stink out the London Stadium in their 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur this afternoon—but we certainly let a golden opportunity slip There were flashes of positivity and some decent individual performances but it was hard to shake the feeling that the Hammers let Spurs off the hook there will be some ‘positives’ to take from the game but the harsh truth remains: West Ham haven’t won a football match in eight attempts a run stretching all the way back to February There were visible improvements in Graham Potter’s side, but that shouldn’t disguise the fact that this was a poor, second-string Tottenham team focused more on Europa League success than anything else Perhaps it was one of those situations where both Potter and Ange Postecoglou would’ve gladly taken a point to avoid media scrutiny but a win felt very much there for the taking West Ham’s quadruple substitution in the 81st minute appeared to kill any remaining attacking momentum and although not conceding late could be seen as progress it was still two points dropped against a vulnerable Spurs side Jarrod Bowen took his goal brilliantly and Aaron Wan-Bissaka delivered the sort of performance that should have him nailed on for Player of the Year But the reality is this: West Ham simply don’t score enough goals to offset the kind of individual error Max Kilman made early in the game This was a match there to be won—and West Ham I think it was yet more evidence of how reliant we are on Jarrod Bowen as at the moment he seems to be the only one that has the punch to actually put the ball in the net What is wrong with you lot it’s a bad season loads of teams have them.are you West ham fans or just a bunch of moaning tossers get behind the team or piss off Every week he gives the opposition chances and even a team as bad as spuds is going to take advantage We have plenty of dross but mostly free transfers or old boys left by Moyes but Kilman is a very expensive liability Happenning every week We are not good enough at the moment to kill games off Kilmans mistake leading to there goal is now highlighting what a poor player he is A very bad signing and all that money wasted imn afraid Cost us the 3 point today We stink and will be strong candidates for relegation next year unless there are big changes at the club I care so little about what happens in West Ham games these days that I have to turn my attention to things I care more about And that includes keyboard warriors who waste server space with pointless garbage ‘comments’ like yours like calling whomever you’re taking aim at a ‘knob’ I’m pretty sure you can’t use them to open a door or turn on a radiator… you nob comments (if you can call them that) like address the issue of language bias and the identified challenges for automated multimodal Urdu FND are as follows: verifiable domain-agnostic and real-world news dataset There are 78,409 real and bogus news in the publicly available dataset News is collected from reliable real-world news sources and fact-checking websites The news is labelled as per the fact-checked news With a specific focus on multilingual FND in resource-constrained and rich-resource languages the open-source pre-trained LLaMA 2 model is fine-tuned The curated dataset is used for unimodal monolingual text-based Urdu FND the curated Urdu dataset is combined with the real-world sourced dataset ISOT Fake News (in English) for experimental evaluation and validation of the proposed approach for multilingual FND Analytical and prediction performance comparison results demonstrate that the proposed LLaMA-based approach shows excellent results for the unimodal text-based monolingual and multilingual FND Our approach provides more accurate and explainable evaluations vis-à-vis existing methods validated by a comprehensive comparison the proposed fine-tuning method ensures robust data handling has surpassed the outcomes demonstrated in benchmark datasets like Question-Answering the research aims to investigate LLMs’ performance capabilities for text-based monolingual and multilingual FND We summarise the existing multilingual FND approaches and classification capabilities of LLM and determine that these can be applied to FND specifically The dataset was in six different languages from six domains The authors employed neural topic modelling with PLM and XLM-RoBERTa Subgraphs were used to describe generated relationships between document and word nodes the extracted textual representations were used for multi-typed heterogeneous text graphs and achieved an accuracy improvement of 1 - 7% compared to SOTA approaches Despite the recent developments and research in multilingual FND FND in Urdu combined with other rich-resource languages is limited This literature addresses the limitations by presenting a large-sized and multi-domain Urdu dataset implemented for multilingual FND with ISOT Fake News dataset using LLMs Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) Implementing these techniques and additional domain-specific information can significantly reduce the computational resources required for improving open-source pre-trained LLMs on downstream tasks scalability is still a demanding issue because of the enormous volumes of potential FN generated and the high cost of GPT-4 The effectiveness of contemporary scaled open-source LLaMA 2 in this domain is unknown this study proposes the monolingual and multi-lingual FND approach using LLaMA 2 and the newly curated large-sized domain-agnostic real-world news dataset The study suggested that even with scarce training data offering a significant insight for FND in different low-resource languages due to the lack of labelled data samples These proactive and preventive approaches offer a comprehensive framework for FND Urdu FND is an under-researched area mainly because of limited resources, tools and parsers47 It is significant to address the language bias in AI research caused by limited research in low-resource languages despite being one of the top ten most spoken languages worldwide The foremost remains the complex polysemous words and syntactic and morphological structure publicly unavailable and lack verification online web sources are present which can be used for curating verifiable and large-sized datasets These datasets can assist in developing the automated FND mechanism based on SOTA approaches to curb the threat of FN-related cybercrimes from (2014 - 2023) was translated and added since Urdu fact-checked fake news web sources are inadequate The dataset comprises news from 15 different domains The experts assigned the labels as per the fact-checked news The machine-translated Urdu news was reviewed and refined by expert journalists (subject matter experts) to align with the stylistic and contextual norms of the Urdu news The team of 8 professional journalists with over five years of experience in news editing and fact-checking helped us during the dataset quality assurance process This process used a systematic approach and ensured semantic accuracy by comparing translated news with English news and culturally specific terms to ensure relevance to Urdu-speaking audiences they verified the labels according to the fact-checked news on authentic websites by maintaining the authenticity of the translated news in the curated dataset according to journalistic standards standard glossaries for Urdu and news from different domains Word clouds of Hook and Bait Urdu dataset’s true It also determines that OSN users cannot differentiate between authentic and fake news and an automated mechanism for FND is required the Hook and Bait Urdu dataset with real-world and domain-agnostic news can be used to train the models for automated monolingual and multilingual FND mechanisms Multiple redundant news items and stop words non-alphanumeric characters and special characters are removed from the Hook and Bait Urdu dataset This step is necessary to clean data to reduce noise this stage follows different pre-processing techniques The same steps are followed for the ISOT fake news dataset before it is fed to the fine-tuned pre-trained LLaMA 2 model The 0.92 statistical results validate its effectiveness Word cloud of combined fake and true news from Hook and Bait Urdu and ISOT Fake News datasets Figure 2 demonstrates the word cloud of combined fake and true news items from both datasets We present a multilingual word cloud of both datasets which shows that both datasets cover real-world domain-agnostic news gathered from reliable fact-checked sources and increase the lexical diversity of trained models for multilingual FND T-SNE visualizations of the Hook and Bait Urdu and ISOT Fake News Datasets The fine-tuning techniques incur enormous computational and human annotation costs for various classification tasks Self-supervised learning is used on a large-sized unlabelled text-based corpus to generate pre-trained LLaMA 2 Supervised fine-tuning and a high-quality prompt-response instruction dataset are used to create the LLaMA 2 Chat model Using Reinforcement Learning with Human Feedback (RLHF) the original version of Llama 2-Chat is optimised The proposed approach to fine-tune the pre-trained Llama 2 model for text-based FND LLaMA tokenizer receives labelled text data and transforms it into lists of token IDs which are subsequently fed to the trainable PEFT model The hugging Face transformer model is generated by adjusting the weights of the LLaMA and is loaded using the PEFT-LoRA framework the product of two low-rank matrices \(L_{A}\) and \(L_{B}\) specify the parameter update for a pre-trained weight matrix \(L_0 \in M^{c \times d}\): the forward pass for \(f = L_0 \cdot p\) is changed as follows: For cs is the number of classes, the target t contains class indices, and the logits s are the unnormalized logits for each labelled class. The labels in Fig. 5 correlate to the target t while the trainable PEFT model’s outputs match the logits s we used the prediction performance metrics precision accuracy and F1-score since these selected metrics provide a comprehensive evaluation framework for FND-related tasks used individually to classify fake and legitimate news achieves an accuracy of 0.978 and an F1-score of 0.971 along with a precision and recall of 0.969 and 0.974 for Urdu FND The results obtained using 5-fold cross-validation provided robust evaluation metrics across all folds precision and recall on the test set are 0.9708 the standard deviation for each evaluation metric (F1-score precision and recall) on the test set is 0.00172 ensured computational efficiency while leveraging early stopping and optimized hyperparameters for reliable and high-performing monolingual FND we aim to conduct additional experiments (e.g. using the proposed model for FND using the limited-sized datasets for zero-shot or few-shot scenarios) An accuracy of 0.956 and an F1-score of 0.924 was shown for Urdu FND The analytical and prediction performance comparison indicates that the Hook and Bait Urdu dataset is the largest domain-agnostic dataset and showed the best results with an accuracy of 0.978 and an F1-score of 0.971 using the LLaMA 2-based approach for Urdu FND The analytical and prediction performance comparison indicates that the Hook and Bait Urdu dataset is the largest domain-agnostic dataset and showed the classification results with an accuracy of 0.978 and an F1-score of 0.971 using the LLaMA 2-based approach for Urdu FND It shows that the proposed framework outperforms the multi-lingual datasets and approaches used in the previous studies They used three COVID-related news datasets in English and curated a new dataset in the Chinese language The BERT-based approach achieved an F1-score of 0.71 and an accuracy of 0.75 for cross-lingual FND We use the Hook and Bait Urdu and ISOT fake news datasets for our proposed LLM-based approach for multilingual FND. The fine-tuning approach enhances the overall classification results and achieves an accuracy of 0.984 and an F1-score of 0.980, validated by Fig. 6 The large-sized datasets play a significant role in increasing the lexical ability of the models in the context of fake news detection We used this as the foundation of our work to address the challenge of monolingual and multilingual FND by curating brief headline-style data (relevant to prevalent news on OSNs) and integrating contextual and linguistic variations (rich and low resource languages) from various sources fine-tuning LLaMA 2 to achieve domain-agnostic experiments with fine-tuning LLMs demonstrate that large datasets enhance lexical proficiency and enable the model to focus on identifying unique language cues irrespective of languages and contexts specific to fake news The anticipated limitations of this study are as follows: We used LLaMA 2 with only 0.032% of its total parameters (211,569,734 trainable parameters) for our experiments to improve computational efficiency and handle large-sized multilingual datasets this may lead to somewhat reduced accuracy or dependability although these decreases are usually negligible [add ref] the results indicate that this proved a fair trade-off for monolingual and multilingual FND on real-world news datasets and did not hinder generalization across diverse fake news datasets The study did not evaluate pre-trained multilingual models due to limited computational resources we will assess the pre-trained language models on these datasets in future work to highlight their strengths and weaknesses Major hindrances prevented the evaluation of other prevalent LLMs We did not employ GPT and Claude in this study due to a lack of accessibility to parameter change and restricted customizability and cost-effectiveness of these models were further hindered by their proprietary character especially when dealing with low-resource language were better suited to the objectives of this study because they provided more transparency domain-specific adaptability and scalability We explored the potential of the LLaMA 2 model for monolingual and multilingual FND contexts which will enable us in future research work pursuits We will expand the multilingual FND datasets for other low and rich-resource languages and evaluate LLMs providing a potential solution This will ensure the wide-scale evaluation and applicability of LLMs-based automated FND mechanisms in real-world scenarios We will also redirect our efforts towards multi-label and multimodal FND in different languages using LLMs and pre-trained language models which will be closer to real-world news on OSNs the research findings highlight the prerequisite for the continuous investigation of LLMs and pre-trained language models to explore the prediction capabilities and lead to developing appropriate strategies to effectively address the looming threat of fake news dissemination on OSNs and online web sources An automated Fake News Detection (FND) mechanism can mitigate the threat of Fake news (FN) propagation on OSNs and online websites This study addresses language bias in AI research caused by extensive research in rich-resource languages To validate the capability of LLMs for text-based unimodal FND we fine-tune open-source LLaMA 2 for our experiments we curate the first large-sized domain agnostic real-world news dataset the Hook and Bait Urdu and make it available publicly for the research community unimodal text-based monolingual and multilingual FND We benchmark the dataset with the LLaMA 2-based proposed approach which achieves an accuracy of 0.978 and an F1-score of 0.971 for monolingual FND we combine the Hook and Bait Urdu dataset with the ISOT Fake News dataset in English the Urdu language employs an entirely different syntax style and language structure from the English language Using the LoRA-based fine-tuning approach for multilingual FND in two languages we optimise the pre-trained LLaMA 2 7B-parameter The suggested fine-tuning approach enables feature extraction and shows an accuracy of 0.984 and an F1 score of 0.980 Since it consistently produces excellent results for different languages the suggested approach can be applied to language-related tasks in rich and low-resource languages Analytical and prediction performance comparison verifies that the results are significant using large-sized real-world news datasets compared to previous studies for monolingual the proposed fine-tuning method ensures robust data handling and computational efficiency for reliable and high-performing monolingual and multilingual FND add multi-class labels and combine it with different rich and low-source languages specifically for LLMs since they require large-sized datasets for training and testing This will result in establishing an integrated approach for various languages as concentrated on the real-world scenario; implementing individual models for around 7000 languages worldwide is irrational The intended research will focus on different LLMs for multimodal and multilingual FND to counter the threat of deepfakes on OSNs and online websites The code and dataset used in this work are available at Zenodo https://zenodo.org/records/15047556 and on GitHub at https://github.com/Sheetal83/Hook-and-Bait-Urdu good advisor: Exploring the role of large language models in fake news detection In Proceedings of the AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence (2024) Cross-modal contrastive learning for multimodal fake news detection In Proceedings of the 31st ACM International Conference on Multimedia (2023) Optimal weighted extreme learning machine for cybersecurity fake news classification Understanding the role of feature engineering in fake news detection In Soft Computing: Theories and Applications: Proceedings of SoCTA 2021 Deep dive into fake news detection: Feature-centric classification with ensemble and deep learning methods An ensemble machine learning approach through effective feature extraction to classify fake news An automated data-driven machine intelligence framework for mining knowledge to classify fake news using NLP Fake news detection in low-resource languages In Speech and Language Technologies for Low-Resource Languages: First International Conference Blodgett, S. L., Barocas, S., Daumé III, H. & Wallach, H. miles and endured the fiercest storms to navigate endless horizons two-thirds of the world’s 22 albatross species are globally threatened Their greatest threat is not what nature can throw at them up to 100,000 albatrosses are unintentionally killed by equipment used in commercial fisheries – that’s one every five minutes These incredible birds should not be dying this way as human needs can be met without sacrificing the natural world We know it’s possible because in the last two decades our Albatross Task Force (ATF) have worked tirelessly with policy makers and fishing crews on simple and cheap ways to save albatrosses with very little effort At-sea trials and implementation of bycatch mitigation measures in trawl and longline fisheries have led to astounding bycatch reductions 98% fewer birds have been killed in the Namibian demersal longline fishery and there’s been a 99% reduction in albatross bycatch in the South African trawl fleet – saving tens of thousands of seabirds each year our work has saved ten’s of thousands of albatrosses and hundred’s of thousands of seabirds around the world Donate today to help keep albatrosses of the hook for good.  We have a rare opportunity to make a significant impact thanks to a generous donor who has pledged to match all donations up to £34,000 no matter how little or big your contribution our donor will double it to scale our work to prevent further seabird deaths.  Bycatch is a big threat to albatrosses but what is it Albatrosses mainly feed on squid and fish at the surface of the water But bait on long fishing lines or discarded fish around boats is pretty tempting too many become caught by baited hooks and drown while others are fatally struck by the cables that tow nets This is known as bycatch and is the biggest marine threat to albatrosses globally Sign up to receive the latest bird conservation news You’ll also receive updates about our projects science and other ways to get involved including Me, as a trainer, I watch fights...they promised three great fights in Times Square. There was no fights. Honestly, it was boring watching those fights and it’s upsetting that those guys get paid the top dollar for that. They don’t perform based on their paychecks.” “You know, I’ve seen worse. I saw Shakur Stevenson fight Dos Santos, the Dominican kid. I mean, come on. One or two punches a round? That’s not boxing...I think this new era of boxing is more about show than fighting.” “Devin, when he lets go of his hands he lands because he has accuracy. But why doesn’t he let go of his punches? I mean, look, Ramirez was pressuring the whole fight, He wanted to engage because Ramirez wanted to fight, but you got to have a partner, right? You got to have a partner to exchange but there was no partner for him, he was just chasing the rabbit around the whole ring. “He needs to retire, man. Devin Haney needs to retire and just let the real fighters get in the ring and perform. Honestly, never been a fan of his boxing. The only good fight I saw him was when he fought Linares, and I saw the fight because of Linares, not because of him. But these kinds of performances, man, he should just retire. “Ryan, I like Ryan. Ryan’s a great guy but once he got hit with a left hook, what happened to that anger in you. When he fought [Luke Campbell] he got dropped and he came back and boom, demolished him. Yesterday he did totally the opposite. Oops. Something went wrong. Please enter a valid email and try again. I arrived at the Sidney and Matilda around 7pm, to be greeted by the friendly security, who said that I could wait in the main bar. So, I had a drink until it was time to go in. The place had started to fill up, and Hook’s fans were having a beverage or two, chatting away, as they buzzed off the anticipation of what was billed to be a great evening of indie music in the venue’s new 300-capacity space.  There were three support acts, all of who did a great job in warming up the sold-out venue. These were Simon Peter Thompson, the highly regarded frontman of Sheffield band Alvarez Kings, who played an enjoyable acoustic set. The Hudares also put on a good show. LPMC, the main support, played their way through a great set of polished harmonious tunes.   Hook open with ‘This Feeling’ – an as-yet unrecorded song but a live staple! The band moved through numbers of both original and a couple of covers in the early stages, including Blossoms’ ‘There’s a Reason Why’ They then performed single ‘Alone You Go’ – another great song to sing along to in a live setting, which was appreciated by the crowd who joined in with the chorus, hands in the air and cheering along. Hook was also joined by additional band performers, Sammy Murdoch of Glass Rhino on backing vocals, James Wells on trumpet and Pat Tough on violin. This gave the performance the fullest sound I’ve seen from them yet live.  Also joining Hook, was guest performer and burgeoning local pop singer Bethany Grace, who came on to take lead vocals of ‘Be My Baby’ and the Amy Winehouse version of ‘Valerie’ before the band, with Hook back on vocals, merged into The Zutons version.  Mat then introduced songwriter, Paul Fletcher, onto the stage to help play along with new single ‘Won’t Let the World’ and also ‘Suspended Belief’ before moving onto a couple of songs from his days with Kartica, where he was joined on stage by ex-Kartica bandmate Sam Cotterill on lead guitar. All in all they performed a stunning set of 17 songs, my favourite being ‘Runaway Road’, Mat’s debut single. In Mat’s words “The song is about gaining direction, and gathering the wind in your sails again.” I think it’s a wonderful piece of music, kicking off with a great guitar riff and introducing some nice melodic tones. It really resonates in a live performance and is definitely one of the crowd’s favourites. It’s great hearing the ex-Kartica frontman making some noise again, and his vocals during the show resonate very well. Musically, there are splashes of Oasis and the Verve throughout, and the gig showcases his experience as a singer/songwriter, easily expressing meaning and a message behind songs. The band members meld together to create a pleasing sonic harmony, a wall of sound, and looked to be enjoying themselves too. All together they looked great on stage; the overall performance was exceptional.   The band finished with a grand cover of Oasis’ ‘The Masterplan’ – the trumpet and violin added so much to this song in particular!  I managed to catch up with Mat after the show and he had this to say about the evening: It was a great night, with a fantastic energy from the band and crowd alike. I predict that 2025 should be another belter of a year for Hook and his band. Maybe playing to bigger audiences, in different cities across the country.  I have to recommend going to see Mat Hook perform especially if you are into the Britpop/90s guitar vibe, you will have a great time. Fitting, since later that evening Hook will attend the season three premiere of The White Lotus “It’s very meta,” the 29-year-old Alabama native agrees Who can blame her? That sentiment doesn’t just apply to her physical surroundings, but encompasses the entire experience of being a part of the Emmy-winning anthology series which changes casts (except for one or two actors) each season Fabio Lovino/HBOIn season three, Hook — who also stars in Prime Video’s Cruel Intentions and the upcoming adaptation of People We Meet on Vacation on Netflix — plays Piper Ratliff a university student studying religion and middle child to Tim (Jason Isaacs) and Victoria Ratliff (Parker Posey) When I ask if she had any contact with the other “kids” from previous White Lotus seasons (Sydney Sweeney but I was never put in contact with any of them,” she says who plays Piper’s brother Lochlan) worked with Meghann Fahy on The Perfect Couple But I didn’t talk to any of them.” She acknowledges it could feel weird for the previous cast to see a whole new group of actors step in I’m not a part of this graduating class.’” Hook says she doesn’t know if she’ll be able to watch The White Lotus in season four for that same reason her curiosity will most likely get the best of her so I’m kind of ride-or-die forever,” she says I wonder if I really would watch the fourth season Maybe the previous casts don’t really want to engage so we can have our own experience I’m kind of glad that I didn’t connect with them It’s better just to go in and experience it yourself.” The experience was one that Hook says she’ll cherish forever Whether it’s her new honorary brothers (Patrick Schwarzenegger’s Saxon and Sam Nivola’s Lochlan) or invaluable conversations about the industry with Parker Posey and Michelle Monaghan Hook’s time on The White Lotus will no doubt take her career to the next level there are some things she wants you to know From her given name (don’t call her Sarah) to her doppelgänger The White Lotus’s Sarah Catherine Hook is that refreshing talent who is open I’ll never forget interviewing Sarah Jessica Parker years ago when I said to her, “Do you prefer Sarah or Sarah Jessica or SJ?” and she said, “No, it is Sarah Jessica.” Wow, that’s cool for me to know because I know Sarah Michelle Gellar doesn’t mind being Sarah. And then same with Mary Elizabeth Winstead, I know she’s Mary. But I do think [having the three names] looks so strong on screen. If it was just Sarah Hook, that’s not very memorable. I like it as a whole, and I think it looks good. But it’s such a burden, oh my God.[Laughs.] Natasha quizzed newcomer Aimee on how well she knew The White Lotus Universe. I’m glad we can finally set the record straight I usually stay away from asking this question but do people say you look like anyone in particular everyone kept saying I look like Brie Larson My whole life I’ve gotten Reese Witherspoon I don’t feel like I look like her as much anymore you look like her.” I get Cailee Spaeny a lot these days A mix between Brie Larson and Ella Bleu Travolta who’s John Travolta and Kelly Preston’s daughter That’s the thing with my hair colour; I look so different in White Lotus than I do in Cruel Intentions The amount of times people have said that to me about Brie and then playing either a young Reese or her daughter… I’m down Someone call her and let them know their little doppelgänger’s running around Let’s talk about Parker Posey as your mother on The White Lotus What is the best story you can share from your time working with her “Ha ha ha.” She always just kind of looked to me for approval of it or something In the beginning she and I hung out a lot and she took me under her wing She was really sweet and cute and very curious about me She and I both went to SUNY Purchase College I was in the music programme; she was in the acting programme So that was fun for us to be able to bond over that I would also have great chats with Michelle Monaghan about navigating [Hollywood and fame] I always try to get tips and tricks from other actors who’ve been in the game because I’m like “How are you doing this?” It’s fun to observe Fabio Lovino/HBOWhich cast member did you bond with the most They were my best friends the whole way through and then kind of go their separate ways and then find other people or whatever And I am a middle girl between two brothers in real life “George is your biggest fan,” because he’s a bit of a cinephile Patrick and Forrest really remind me of each other Do Forrest and George have double names as well They’re normal people.[Laughs.] They have the best names Let’s talk about the fact that you are a classically trained soprano and opera singer I started taking voice lessons in high school and really fell in love with classical music and was kind of raised with an appreciation for it My grandparents lived in North Carolina when I was growing up and we would go see the orchestral performances and occasionally a night of singing So then I started doing programmes at Brevard Music Centre in North Carolina as a high school voice student I remember reading Kristin Chenoweth’s autobiography when I was in eighth grade and was so taken by the fact that she was able to do opera I kind of thought you had to stay in one lane TV and film felt like too far of a reach for some reason how do you even get into that and what kind of college programme do you do because I did this acting programme in New York the summer after my freshman year of college at Atlantic Theatre Company and it was completely life-changing I wanted to drop out of opera school and do an acting programme instead because I loved it so much You’re going to keep going.” My mom and my family were huge proponents of my singing Normally parents would not encourage their daughter to pursue opera but they knew there was a bigger plan at play here They knew I was very serious about training my voice properly I didn’t want to be mediocre at everything and then take acting classes and go from there What’s funny is I always thought I was going to start with stage and probably do musical theatre or theatre and then fall into TV and film But the way that it has flipped…I was so thankful because that really was my dream I don’t think I was letting myself actually fully believe that anyone would want me in their TV show or movie or whatever I love it more and more every time I step on set If you were to be given an on-set superlative Probably the most anxious or most likely to be anxious at any given moment I’ve noticed this about myself especially last year but somehow I just wear [my character’s] identity a little too long and strong And so I felt like I needed to be Piper the whole time on The White Lotus So I guess most likely to be Piper all the time for your upcoming role in the People We Meet On Vacation what was the personality you took on there And how is the character different from Piper playing a completely different character from my role in People We Meet on Vacation and I had to film them at the same time in one week I had to leave North Carolina and go to New Orleans to finish up Vacation compared to what I was doing in North Carolina I was just like a 30-year-old princess in People We Meet on Vacation She’s really easygoing and very naturally beautiful Tom [Blyth] and Emily [Bader] are amazing and so right for those roles I always loved coming in and being a guest I don't have to worry about carrying anything I’m just here wearing pretty clothes and acting with good actors in a beautiful setting.” It’s a treat are there any causes you want to raise awareness for I really want to get more involved with climate change activism We have to focus on saving our planet because if we don’t have the planet What’s one thing you urge everyone to do to help our planet I do try to be environmentally sound in most ways And I feel like she’s really sick right now This article was originally published on GLAMOUR US. Could the Ratliff family return to The White Lotus or – as viewers have called for – get their own spin-off following their financial ruin ‘I’d love to see what Mike would write for it I’ve heard whispers of Zion being a good one to bring back [to the main show] because he was introduced so late I think it would be fun to have an all-star season for the final one there has been talk that people really want to see that.’ she stars in the Netflix adaption of Emily Henry’s bestselling novel People We Meet On Vacation alongside Tom Blythe ‘Emily’s books are the perfect set up for a Netflix romantic comedy,’ she says ‘Being in a romcom was a goal of mine post-White Lotus because it’s also quite hard to get into movies But I’m also so serious when I say where do I go after White Lotus so it’s going to hard to ever top that experience.’ she hopes to put her vocal abilities to use too ‘I've always dreamt of being in this really gorgeous Broadway show called The Light in the Piazza I would love to play Clara Johnson one day.’ You heard her Company number 01176085; Bauer Radio Limited Company number: 1394141; Registered office: Media House Peterborough PE2 6EA and H Bauer Publishing Company number: LP003328; Registered office: The Lantern H Bauer Publishing are authorised and regulated for credit broking by the FCA (Ref No: 845898) Radio X celebrated the distinctive bass tone of Peter Hook of Joy Division and New Order.. Born in Salford on 13th February 1956, Peter Hook's life was changed when he attended a Sex Pistols gig in Manchester in the turbulent summer of 1976 He was so inspired by the punk band's confrontational attitude that he went out and bought a bass guitar the following day The rest is history: Hook and his friend Bernard Sumner met up with some like-minded individuals Ian Curtis and Stephen Morris to form the band that would become Joy Division The bassist's distinctive tone became part of JD's signature sound but their meteoric rise was stopped in its tracks by the suicide of singer Curtis in May 1980 The surviving members regrouped as New Order and as they began to embrace electronic sounds and dance-floor beats Hook's bass gave the music an essential link back to humanity Hook and the rest of New Order split acrimoniously for good in 2008 but the musician continues to perform music as Peter Hook and The Light Joy Division's first work with the idiosyncratic producer Martin Hannett was two tracks for Factory's very first vinyl release Named after the brand new delay unit Hannett had just bought it's one of the band's most manic songs The tougher side of Joy Division's sound which led off their peerless debut album Unknown Pleasures Hook's signature sound was achieved by firstly playing higher up the fretboard on the bass (initially so he could hear himself over the racket made by Bernard Sumner's guitar) and subtle use of the Electro-Harmonix Clone Theory pedal Hooky recalled that this track was the first Joy Division song that literally stopped the audience in its tracks and became the band's debut single proper in the autumn of 1979 This astonishing live version was recorded for BBC-2's Something Else programme in September of that year Joy Division - Transmission [OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO] By the time Love Will Tear Us Apart made the UK charts at the end of June 1980 singer Ian Curtis had been dead over a month When Peter Hook heard the news that his band had made the Top 20 still numb from the shock of the bereavement Love Will Tear Us Apart is the ultimate epitaph for a great British band its backbone the memorable riff doubled on bass and eerie synthesiser Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart [OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO] First played at the very last Joy Division show in May 1980 Ceremony became the first single from New Order initially recorded by the trio of Bernard Sumner nobody could decide on the definitive take with new recruit Gillian Gilbert on guitar This version emphasises Hook's chiming bass intro perfectly Peter Hook was the lead contender in the "New Order Singer Auditions" after inital favourite Stephen Morris was counted out when they realised a singing drummer didn't have enough "presence" Taking the place of such an iconic frontman as Ian Curtis was no easy task but Hooky gave it a good shot - as demonstrated by his vocal on the striking opening track from New Order's debut album Movement - but ultimately Bernard Sumner got the gig full time New Order - Dreams Never End (Official Audio) New Orde's ground-breaking second album opens with one of Hooky's most memorable basslines; it forms part of the traditional rock sound that sits comfortably alongside the more electrionic tracks that populate the record New Order - Age of Consent (2020 Remaster) [Official Music Video] Opening the second side of New Order's third album this elegant instrumental waltz exists in sharp contrast to the electro-dance hits that make up the rest of the track listing (The Perfect Kiss Peter Hook's bass carries the exquisite melody - and if you're keen to hear more the full version lasts over seventeen and a half minutes With the demise of Factory Records in 1992 it seemed like a fresh start for New Order but the making of the album Republic was fraught and it would be the band's only release of the 90s which revels in the interplay between Hook's bass and Sumner's guitar Revenge was Hooky's first solo outing between the New Order albums Technique and Republic During the band's hiatus in the mid-90s Hook collaborated with the singer and musician David Potts to form Monaco who had a respectable Top 20 hit with this Britpop-era favourite the characteristic Hooky bass sound is front and centre Monaco issued a self-titled follow-up album in 2000 and that was the last we heard from them Monaco - What Do You Want From Me (Official Video) Joy Division not only do I get to go to a gig with my son Charlie for the first time I am getting to hear New Order songs again live for the first time since 1989 To be brutally honest they were shocking that evening playing to a packed Reading Festival which for me was remembered better for nearly dying under the stampede seeing the Sugar Cubes For me New order were pretty poor and after seeing Hooky last year at Custom House Square playing Joy Division I had high hopes so this review will no doubt concentrate on the New Order side of things Peter Hook and the Light are made up ofthe man himself David Potts on Guitar/vocals and Martin Rebelski on keyboards Hooky being the only member of Joy Division and New Order but as shown last year he holds his own on vocals for Joy Division tracks No support tonight due to the long set list that apparently we will get the set will be split into two this evening with New Order set followed by a Joy Division Set with the majority of tracks coming from the Substance albums released as complications In total we are going to be here for at least 2.5 hours which for one act goes well above the call of duty and at least the punters are getting value for money Lights down and our ears were greeted by the sound of ‘Viking Horns’ from the TV show Vikings closely followed by another Viking sample from the title of the 1960’s film of the same name… not sure of the connection between Vikings and New Order but hey I’m sure someone will enlighten me at some point Hooky and the lads took to the stage and with a quick hello to the crowd and announcing that they were pleased to be finishing the length tour to finish up in Ireland then jokingly corrected himself by saying whatever the fuck it is and you all look the same to me…with a quick “here we go” off they went with a roll of cymbals and his familiar bass sound they started off with the first track of the first New Order Album Movement called Dreams Never End with its glorious synth orchestral sound and Hooky’s bass and vocals I swear I still can’t get that smile off my face we were even greeted with the harmonica keyboard thing (is that what its called?) played by Potts Touched by the Hand of God was next with its opening Hooky point to the sky as it kicked in with brilliant drumming by Kehoe interjecting synth drums with the snare vocally Hooky was joined by the first time by Potts and at this stage I did notice the similarity in tone to Bernard Sumner during the song Hooky and Potts rattled out the instrumental part of the end together The unforgettable bass riff and guitar of Ceremony brought us into songs from Substance with Potts duetting again and with the thumbs up from Hooky at one point to him when he was playing solo The set was then draped in green and funnily enough Everything’s Gone Green was blasted out with the spotlights rolling upwards still lit another shade of green to give a brilliant effect The lights this evening was excellently put together by the team and big shout out to them for adding all the effects that we watched this evening As the cheer hit Hooky he was taken aback and said he wasn’t expecting that response he is a man of few words in between songs but took time to mention an old friend of theirs who used to run Factory USA whose name was Michael Shamburg who created ever video that New Order made Hooky then said “Michael if you are up there with Ian Curtis to say hello from me man” with the fast passed Temptation and the opening line of Heaven a Gateway I know was a fitting song to do any tribute With the stage lit with what looked like thousands of spotlights it sounded and looked amazing At this point I will point out that I am not stupid and the main sound from the set does come from a backing track but for me Hooky and his band carry this off in my opinion better… and no better way to have a backing track than the drum machine that brought us Blue Monday with Keogh leaving his drum kit it was down to Hooky for those old enough to remember New Order made the decision on top of the Pops back in the day to do Blue Monday live in the studio and it stank big time… one of life’s lessons… if it ain’t broke don’t fix it… And lit in Blue it certainly was not broken with my son smiling as this was one of the few songs of New Order that he knew well Lots of posturing from Hooky during some synth moments Confusion brought us the first main vocal of the evening from Potts and his tone was very close to Sumner but in tune (If I do appear to be a bit of a Sumner hater I am not… just stating a fact folks) At this stage I am realising they are playing the running order or Substance… for the uninitiated Substance was released in 1987 with its simplistic cover and was rammed with the New Order extended mixes and B sides if you got the double CD the ending was just perfect and yet another high point of the evening for me The synth drums from Hooky on the introduction to Sub-Culture reverberated across the room by this stage I think my offspring may have been a bit embarrassed by his old man trying to move but I had more to give when ShellShock and if you want an aural experience get the headphones on and listen to this track at the start on Substance live didn’t make it sound the same but was still very enjoyable State of the Nation was never a favourite of mine but can’t like them all I guess but Bizarre Love Triangle made up the that moment with it’s dancy opening and tingling keys Potts vocals again made this song special for me The Belfast crowd sang their hearts out during the chorus and this was the best vocal from Hooky this evening also and so the final song of the Substance set True Faith New Orders biggest hit from Substance with it’s famous video that made absolutely no sense (Hooky’s reference to wacky video was never better summed up with this one) The track live was awash with instrumental bliss and was a perfect end to a wonderful first set So onto the second part of the evening and whilst I am not a huge Joy Division fan I did like the Substance album the set kicked off with the band entering the fray to the sound of Trans Euro Express by Kraftwerk with tracks that I wasn’t that familiar with but before that there was a full set change from New Order with new guitars etc decked out for a more traditional sounding 4 piece band (with the extra bass of course) The set kicked off with No Love Lost and These Days with a reference to 44 years since Ian Curtis passing and a God Rest His Soul before they kicked off into the set the sound immediately sounding the opposite of New Order with the drum and bass laden introductions that Joy Division were famous for. from the outset you can tell the band really love playing these songs compared to the New Order Set and the crowd also responded brilliantly From Safety to Where slows things down but back to speed again with Interzone with Hooky pointing to the crowd while he sang “looking for some friends of mine” Warsaw really punched me in the face with its opening Three And for me was the best song in this set with its punky opening and its call to the crowd to join in on “Three One G” the first three parts of Rudolf Hess’s serial number for which the song is about Leaders of Men was followed by Digital another classic Joy Division track with its anthemic ‘Day in Day’ out chorus to which the crowd lapped up joining in with “fade away” at the end Next was Autosuggestion sloing the pace agin but with Transmission we were back to familiar territory with Hooky taking up stage right with the set lit bright blue to this point the lighting was subdued with the band taking centre stage but now it was ‘Hooky time’ with the crowd singing back Radio live Transmission in full voice back at him For me Joy Division have some stella tracks and She’s Lost Control certainly falls into this bracket with it’s synth drums was the prelude to the New Order sound with Hooky’s deepest tone creating a real special sound for this song Shadowplay gave us some moments where Hooky soaked up the appreciation with his bass slung behind chest out and loving the feedback delivered by the crowd with his crouched stance he stared straight at us as he played bass again with real venom we got a few words from Hooky about him standing beside Ian Curtis seeing him out of the corner of his eye when on stage knowing it was all OK… as he launched into Dead Souls with its long opening hitting us all right between the eyes The glorious Atmosphere had the stage lit in blue with the mournful vocals piercing our ears and the heavenly keyboard sound that deserved this song’s second coming when it was released as a single in 1988 to launch the Substance album the final song of the evening the classic Love Will Tear Us Apart the song has transcended the ages with even my son knowing it’s all to familiar opening and chorus that he and every person in that room sang till their lungs popped The perfect end to a wonderful two and a half hours of music from Hooky and his band for me it was all about the first set and I guess for others the second half… one thing is for sure everyone enjoyed the whole experience and no doubt he will be back for more of the same Full of Hell will release their new EP Broken Sword Rotten Shield on May 16th [pre-order]… GOV.WALES uses cookies which are essential for the site to work Non-essential cookies are also used to tailor and improve services Five Deputies thwarted mass shooting plot by man posing as officer She urged communities to look out for the warning signs that put Allen on investigators' radar even before they knew of the 300 pounds of Allen communicated with others across the country about guerrilla warfare tactics ambushes and racially and ethnically motivated acts of violence who killed two people at her private school in
