A Perth man says he was left “afraid” to go to work after homophobic slurs and “childish victimisation” from colleagues
won £5,500 after taking his former employer
RHT Scotland – based at Belleknowes Industrial Estate in Inverkeithing
Employment judge James Hendry found the firm
which specialises in office removals and installations
was liable after an employee shouted: “Where are you
Sean has revealed the personal toll after he took on the firm in what he describes as a “David vs Goliath” employment tribunal
it took seven-and-a-half weeks to find out if I had won and I was climbing the walls with anticipation from the moment I first stuck my own neck out to complain
“I have to keep pinching myself.”
Sean represented himself throughout the tribunal and – despite the firm hiring both a solicitor and barrister from England – was found to be due compensation for injury to feelings
The events covered by the tribunal happened in November 2023 and followed a disagreement between Sean and his supervisor
The argument resulted in him being called a homophobic slur and the incident was dealt with by the firm
Sean also reported the incident to police and BD later pled guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court and was fined £240
Sean could not include this incident as part of his tribunal claim because it happened outwith the time period considered by the tribunal
but it was used as background for his subsequent complaints
He said: “It ended up being a David and Goliath as I had to fight against the company
I am just wee Sean McGhie who only wanted to get to work and come home in the same state I left in.”
“He was comfortable discussing aspects of his sexuality with fellow employees.”
The tribunal said RHT Scotland – an office removals and installation firm – had “failed to detect a pattern of behaviour” in investigating incidents involving the supervisor and Sean
This included BD allowing an automatic door to shut as Sean was approaching
calling him a “grass” and stating “it f****** stinks in here” while looking at him
The supervisor also excluded Sean after buying a staff lunch from a burger van
The judgement said: “This was on one level childish (such as the exclusion from food bought at the burger van) but coming from the claimant’s supervisor
and given the background circumstances in which these behaviours occurred
Sean says he was left “mortified” by the comment
He said: “I actually heard people gasp and I was mortified and wanted the ground to swallow me up.”
He also reported this incident to police and was later signed off work with stress
Police say nobody has been arrested or charged in connection
but a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal
He also submitted a formal complaint about AR
the firm decided there “was no basis for the complaints made”
Sean was dismissed by the company on January 9 2024 due to claims he had breached confidentiality by speaking about his complaint against BD and had failed to make the company aware of a previous court conviction
He was awarded £3,000 in compensation for the incident involving AR and £2,500 for the “acts of victimisation” from his supervisor
Sean says he suffered with mental and physical problems as a result of the experience
my brother had recently died when I got it and it was something different
“I was able to work through my grief as I was experiencing life in a new way
“It was different from what I had done before – working in a call centre for SSE
“For the first time in my life I was doing a manly job and was able to be myself
“I was building desks and listening to Ru Paul music
“I didn’t expect to be attacked as I was really enjoying it and thought I was doing it all
“I haven’t been back to work but I am taking some time now
and then I will start to look for something.”

A Fife primary school was “surrounded by police” for more than eight hours due to a person on the roof of the building
firefighters and paramedics were called to Inverkeithing Primary School on Hillend Road shortly after noon on Monday
Firefighters used a high-reach vehicle to access the roof
an ambulance and a Scottish Ambulance Service incident support vehicle in the school grounds during the incident
Emergency services spent more than eight hours at the school and left the area at around 8.45pm
Courier reporter Neil Henderson was at the school
He said: “A hooded youth dressed in black has scaled the building and is currently on the roof of the primary school’s main building
“There are at least four police vehicles parked within the grounds and officers are positioned at various points around the perimeter of the main building
“At the left-hand side of the building
a high-reach fire appliance is positioned with the ladder extended to the roof
“Several firefighters as well as a police negotiator are in discussion with the youth in a bid to talk him down from building
“An ambulance as well as a Scottish Ambulance Service incident support vehicle are also on standby within the school grounds.”
A spokesperson for Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “We received an alert at 12.11pm to assist police in an ongoing incident at Inverkeithing Primary School on Hillend Road
A Police Scotland spokesperson said emergency services were called “in relation to concern for a person.”
Councillors have agreed to consider the affordability of different options for Community Use facilities in South West Fife
Earlier this year councillors agreed on six options to be formally assessed in terms of space
These options have now been fully appraised and costed but a final decision on next steps has been deferred
Councillors agreed that consideration of these options will be made as part of the budget setting process
Leader of Fife Council said: “We wanted to give due consideration to what Community Use facilities already exist
what new facilities will be created once the South West Fife High School is built and what facilities we would be losing when the old building closes
The options which are open to us include a range of larger ambitious projects and smaller
It is only sensible for us to then look at these options as part of our wider budget considerations
We can’t make decisions on such a significant financial investment without taking the whole Capital Plan into consideration
“The options we have range from £3m to almost £30m
We can’t hide from the fact that costs will absolutely play a huge part in any decision we make and this is why we haven’t made any decisions today
It is prudent to wait and do this as part of our budget settlement. “

parents and the wider public will be given a second chance to air their views on the renaming of Inverkeithing High School
In a widespread initial consultation the public were asked for their views on a number of previously suggested names
and given the opportunity to add any suggestions of their own
Now they'll be asked to pick their favourite from a shortlist of four names
Inverkeithing High School is being replaced and a new high school is already under construction on a new site in Rosyth
As the new school will not be in Inverkeithing
a new name for the school is now being sought
Convenor of South West Fife Area Committee
David Barratt said: " We had a huge response to our initial consultation
which was very encouraging and showed the depth of feeling around this in the local community
The committee today had a very difficult job to try to whittle down the hundreds of name suggestions and combinations to just four
"One group of pupils put forward a name suggestion and reached out to elected members, inviting us into the school to see their research
We had originally agreed as a committee to make a shortlist of three names but
following the suggestion put forward by the group, it was agreed that we could extend the shortlist to four names."
The four names which councillors decided should be on the shortlist are Caledonia
Forth and the further suggestion of Janet McCallum
A second question on the consultation form will ask if the school is titled as Academy or High School
The next part of the consultation will again involve pupils and staff from all the associated schools
as well as an online form which can be filled in by members of the public. Anyone taking part will be asked to choose one of the names
along with choosing between High School or Academy
The results of that consultation will come back to the Area Committee in April where councillors will then make a final decision after considering the results
Convenor of South and West Fife Area Committee said: “Naming anything
especially a school is quite an emotive subject and we know there will be a lot of different opinions in the community
We want to hear from all voices in the local community so please go online and make your suggestion by 28th March 2025 if you want to have your view considered.”
The consultation form is available on our website and will be live from 6th February at 6am until 28th March at 5pm

Ferrytoll Park & Ride is a bus park and ride scheme
running from the South of Fife to Edinburgh
It's a joint initiative – developed between Fife Council and Stagecoach – and comes as part of the Cross Forth Transportation Plan
The aim was to tackle congestion problems caused by the number of vehicles crossing the Forth Road Bridge
Construction started in November 1999 and the site opened in November 2000 at a cost of £4.2m
It has proven to be an important bus interchange and car share facility
The site is signed from the A90 – look out for the Park & Ride sign
Ferrytoll is located to the south of Inverkeithing (just north of the Forth Road Bridge)
Buses pick up passengers from the turning circle outside the waiting room and use the dedicated southbound bus lane from Ferrytoll to the Forth Road Bridge
buses make use of traffic signal controlled bus lanes into Edinburgh
allowing them to bypass queues of other vehicles
Ferrytoll has the following facilities on site:
There are 1042 car park spaces at Ferrytoll
There's also 11 pick-up drop-off bays directly adjacent to the main building
Most of the parking bays are within the multi-storey car park
We would advise customers with motorhomes or campervans to use Halbeath Park & Ride instead
as this is a large capacity surface level car park with no height restrictions
There will be better opportunities to find a suitable space
your vehicle must fit in a single bay to avoid a parking ticket
Should you plan to stay for longer than two weeks
we also ask you park within the multi-storey
This will allow for any surface level maintenance to be carried out
If you are using the charging points, you should familiarise yourself with the information on our Electric Vehicles page
It details costs and general advice on charging your vehicle
If you have any issues relating to parking, email us at parking.management@fife.gov.uk
The Park Mark is an award given by the police to car parks that have reached the standards of the Safer Parking Scheme. It’s designed to reduce crime and the fear of crime in car parks. Visit Park Mark for more information
There is no charge for vehicles which are left overnight. Customers are reminded that vehicles are left at the owners risk and that a parking space can never be guaranteed
The building and all other rooms are open:

Pupils helped Fife Council’s Education Spokesperson
Cllr Cara Hilton and councillors lay a cement plinth commemorating the school building reaching its highest point

Talking about the new "South West Fife secondary school
which will relocate the current Inverkeithing High School" is quite a mouthful but not for too much longer
as councillors have today agreed the process for naming the new school
members of the South and West Fife Area Committee have given permission for a widespread consultation
which will be seeking suggestions for a name for the relocated school
This consultation will involve pupils and staff from all the associated schools
as well as an online form which can be filled in by members of the public
Those suggestions will be collated and presented back to the Area committee which will create a shortlist of names
for a further consultation to see which suggestion or suggestions are most popular
Elected members will then make a final decision on the name at the Area Committee in April
That’s why we want to gather as many suggestions as possible
especially from the young people who will be attending the new school
They’re going to be hearing and using the name for a long time so we want it to mean something for them
Schooly McSchool Face is not going to cut it here
“We want to hear from all voices in the local community so please go online and make your suggestion by 22nd January 2025 if you want to have it considered.”
