who started the academy six months before the COVID-19 pandemic
but were forced to close down for the foreseeable future
as owner Ben spoke about the previous closure
he said: “Reopening back then wasn’t possible
but a change in circumstances and the opportunity arose to go again and despite how much effort we knew it would be
and we thought we would kick it back off to try and create a judo hub in Irlam and Cadishead
“We had a slight change of name and yeah
we’ve just changed it to Quilter Judo Academy after my wife and I
are the two people running the club.”
and Francesca from Sidcup have both competed at the very top level
Ben competed at London 2012 becoming a Paralympic bronze medallist
despite suffering a significant knee injury weeks before competing
Ben has also been able to become a double World Champion and European Champion
Francesca narrowly missed out on selection for the Olympics in London
but she has been a British champion and proudly represented Great Britain at the Junior European Championships
Ben added: “It was one of the sports that really struggled coming out the other side of COVID so it’s great to be able to start a club again and offer something a bit different from the mainstream sports
“Obviously I got a lot from the sport myself personally
having been to two Paralympic games and had the privilege to travel the world.”
And with rise in sports other than Football and Rugby in the UK
it has allowed it to become a driving force in the local community – and the new sports hubs in Salford are continuously looking for young people to get involved
Ben continued: “It’s great to give back to the local community
there wasn’t a club that was too close to us
“Obviously I don’t drive being visually impaired
“There’s a lot of time and effort goes into running a voluntary club
But I’m proud to have got it to where it is and I’m enjoying it four weeks in
With a rise in Judo participants once again in the UK two years after COVID the sport is reaching similar numbers to 2017
where it peaked at 35,800 where it sits since 2023 at 32,800
And this recent upsurge in interest new members and a new community is brewing in the Quilter Judo Academy
“It’s not your mainstream option
I think it’s so beneficial for confidence
“There’s so much going for the sport that I just like to know that those values are being passed onto local people and children
and 16+ the classes are run every Monday and Thursday covering the three age groups
The academy has been open for five weeks and has continued to pull new members in
with Ben’s son making it into the British School Championship competing at a national level and representing the academy

After a dramatic late win last time out, FC Isle of Man will be hunting success again as they host in-form Irlam in the NWCFL Premier Division tomorrow night (1 February).
The Manx side's stoppage time win against AFC Liverpool six days ago ended a recent barren streak of just one win in their previous seven outings.
Whilst they beat their latest visitors earlier in the season, Irlam head to the Island in red-hot form unbeaten in their last 11 games and winning seven of those.
FC Isle of Man manager Paul Jones thinks last week's result has given the camp a lift, and was asked if this latest test against play-off rivals Irlam is being seen as a proverbial 'six-pointer':

Irlam reside seven points and two places further up the standings than their hosts this weekend having played two games more - their current haul of 59 points sees them only outside the play-off positions right now on goal difference.

Allied Filter operates from three UK manufacturing facilities using innovative, custom-designed production techniques and traditional manufacturing methods.
Cleanova is a portfolio company of PX3 Partners, a London headquartered private equity firm. It has locations in the US, UK, Ireland, and India, and was formed as Cleanova following the sale of Celeros Flow Technology’s Filtration division in October 2023.
The acquisition supports Cleanova’s strategic vision to expand globally and solidify its leadership in the industrial filtration market.
Allied Filter Systems turned over £7.14m in the last year for which accounts are available, making £1.8m in pre-tax profits. The business employs 62 people across the three sites.
It sells to over 30 countries and operates from three UK manufacturing facilities.
Liquid filter bags are manufactured at two facilities in the Manchester area. The Irlam site has undergone two major expansions and the Eccles site was established to further increase production capacity in 2018.
Stainless steel bag filter housings, cartridge filter housings and strainers are manufactured at a site in Warrington.
The acquisition of Allied Filter will enable Cleanova to leverage Allied Filter’s engineering expertise in filter bags, production capabilities and distribution networks to accelerate its expansion in the UK, while allowing Allied Filter to leverage Cleanova’s global production and sales network to fuel its own growth.
KPMG advised Allied Filter on the transaction. Cleanova was advised by Alvarez & Marsal as financial and tax adviser; Aon as benefits, insurance, and pension adviser; Debevoise & Plimpton as tax structuring adviser; Osborne Clarke as financing legal adviser; and Perkins Coie as legal adviser.

An Irlam animal sanctuary dedicated to caring for both pets and wildlife is calling for support due to rising costs
The charity Animal in Distress is calling for public donations with the fear this winter that the the sanctuary would be be “wiped out”
The charity is partially operating from Silver Street in Irlam
and has been looking after animals for more than 57 years
the rising costs are proving to impact the funding for resources and facilities to cater for the animals
as the sanctuary in Irlam focuses on domestic animals
with the main site located in Littleborough
also catering for more than 350 injured animals
The support they provide to injured animals is vital
but as costs rise the centres are struggling to cope with the stretched resources
who manages the 24-hour emergency service said: “Days change very quickly based on the phone calls you get in.”
Many cases involve road accidents where owners are rarely found
Most animals are treated and given time to heal before beginning the rehoming process
these procedures can be costly—a broken leg might cost over £250
As she continued: “With the amount of vet bills
and repairs for general day-to-day needs – it’s so expensive.”
But she has stressed that without the financial support
that the charity will struggle to remain open and could be “wiped out”
The sanctuaries have cared for a wide range of wildlife
from kestrels and owls to a marmoset monkey
They once nearly ended up with two elephants that had escaped a circus in Stockport
The sanctuary’s core value being to alleviate the suffering of animals that have no voice for themselves

Guests of Salford firework display at Buile Park were left disappointed as the annual bonfire was scrapped from its schedule
The firework displays held by the council took place over the weekend in the two separate events ahead of the November 5 celebrations
and took place at both Buile Hill park and Prince’s park in Irlam over November 2 and 3
Salford City Council held the events free of charge to the members of the public
and offered a range of family friendly activities including firework displays
The council advertised the event “perfect for residents all ages”
Prince’s park was filled from every corner to watch the impressive bonfire and firework display begin and seemed to follow the fantastic annual festivities
local residents were left disappointed after the Salford firework display
with various locals sharing the dissatisfaction with the bonfire not taking place
One visitor shared on Facebook: “What happened to protecting the carbon footprint
Buile Hill bonfire used to be fantastic so Irlam can have a bonfire
The comment gained some support from other residents who were left both confused and unsatisfied with the council’s decision
The council responded saying: “We decided to not have a bonfire at Buile Hill park as part of Salford’s ongoing efforts to reduce our carbon footprint.”
The plan to reduce carbon footprint is a part of Salford City Council’s
and Greater Manchester’s five-year environment plan in March 2019
The environmental plan has been set out as a long-term environmental vision for Greater Manchester to be carbon neutral by 2038 – with the council taking action to reduce emission
And despite Buile Hill park not having a bonfire
both firework displays and the bonfire at Prince’s park can still have an effect on the carbon emissions
According to Clean Air Manchester “Bonfire night celebrations are also a significant source of air pollution.”
Two second-half goals in the space of five minutes saw FC Isle of Man and Irlam play out a 1-1 draw in the NWCFL Premier Division at the weekend (1 February).
The visiting side led in the 52nd minute through John Johnston who fired home from 12 yards out after seeing a goal chalked off in the first period for offside.
But five minutes later 'The Ravens' drew level as substitute Tom Creer - moments after coming off the bench - slotted home low from a Charlie Higgins cross from the right.
For the Manx side it marks the first time they've managed back-to-back games unbeaten since November 2024 whilst Irlam's recent undefeated streak stretches to 12 games.
With just four minutes on the clock, Irlam had the ball in the back of the net as Johnston swept in a smart finish after good work from teammate Declan Daniels, only for celebrations to be halted by the linesmen's flag.
During a bright start to the contest, Irlam went close again in the 23rd minute as a corner was met by Andrew Langford who crashed his resulting header off the post.
After a goalless first 45, the away side once again started at pace and rattled the woodwork once more in the first minute of the second half as Mitchell Henry saw an effort come back off the crossbar.
Johnston was then denied at the last moments later as he rounded FC Isle of Man goalkeeper Adam Killey only to see his following strike blocked on the line by FC Isle of Man defender Jacob Crook.
Irlam's persistance was eventually rewarded on 52 minutes as Johnston - having threatened throughout - finally found the net with a well-placed hit from 12 yards or so.
However, having soaked up plenty of pressure, FC Isle of Man fought back just five minutes after.
Higgins evaded two challenges on the right before squaring a low cross to Creer who - having only been on the pitch a matter of seconds having replaced the injured Luke Booth - swiveled and directed a low effort past Irlam stopper, Elliot Wynne.
Despite the efforts of both outfits in the latter stages, neither could find a decisive second with Killey playing a notable role with a number of key stops to deny Irlam late on.
You can hear the full-time thoughts of FC Isle of Man Manager Paul Jones below:
The Salford side haven’t lost a league game since November
FC Isle of Man’s play-off hopes in the North West Counties Premier Division hang by a thread as sixth-place Irlam visit the Bowl on Saturday evening.
The Ravens currently lie eight points and two places below the Salford side who sit just outside the division’s promotion play-off spots.
The Manx side will have an extra spring in their step following last weekend’s dramatic victory 2-1 over AFC Liverpool thanks to two injury-time goals.
That win was only the Ravens second in their last eight games, a run of form that has seen Paul Jones’s squad lose their grip on a top-six spot they have occupied for large chunks of the campaign.
After a terrible start to the season that saw them only pick up one draw from their fist six games, Irlam’s form is now some of the best in the division. Indeed they haven’t lost a league game since November, racking up five wins in their last six matches.
After Saturday evening’s game at the Bowl, the Ravens face another tough test with their rearranged trip to former league side Bury on Tuesday evening.
The match was originally meant to take place at the start of this month, but was postponed because of a frozen pitch at Gigg Lane.
The pre-season favourites for the title currently sit second in the standings, a point behind leaders Ramsbottom United.
After next week’s trip to Lancashire, the islanders only have two more away games at Glossop North End and Burscough to come.
The Ravens’ season culminates with a run of eight home fixtures at the national stadium from early March to the last match of the campaign against rivals West Didsbury & Chorlton on April 19.

A 66-year-old man who suffered a cardiac arrest outside a Salford leisure centre has paid tribute to the man that saved his life
Louis Lynch survived thanks a member of staff using the defibrillator available outside Irlam and Cadishead Leisure Centre
Passerby Benny Norris saw the collapsed man outside the building and ran in to inform the on duty manager of the incident
Benny rushed to find the man surrounded by two nurses performing CPR
before he grabbed the defibrillators on the building
After applying three shocks to Louis’s chest
and after he was resuscitated he was placed in a recovery position until an ambulance arrived five minutes later
Louis is now recovering at home after a five-week stay in the hospital
where he received a double heart bypass and having an ICD fitted
Following the incident Louis was thankful for the quick actions
as he said: “Benny saved my life following my sudden cardiac arrest outside the Leisure Centre
“He had to shock me three time as I was unresponsive but his quick action together with others providing CPR saved my life.”
“I don’t have the words to thank him or Salford Community Leisure for providing the defibrillators.”
Benny himself downplayed his role in saving Mr Lynch back in June
He said he was “just doing his job”
as he continued to refuse to take credit when others were involved in saving him
Following the incident Salford Community Leisure have provided new defibrillators for Leisure centres across Salford with support form Salix Homes
Salford Community Leisure and Leisure sport manager Paul Bland said “Without the support of Salix Homes & For Housing
funding the new equipment would’ve been more challenging
These new units will give us piece of mind for several years to come.”
You can read more about the incident at the Irlam Leisure Centre and the defibrillators here
A first aid organisation in Irlam will be providing free life-saving defibrillator training for the community this summer
The classes at Hamilton Davies Trust on Liverpool Road will offer vital training on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and use of a defibrillator on July 15 and August 19
The classes, carried out by Imperative Training
aim to educate residents so they are prepared when dealing with a cardiac arrest
Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is the sudden loss of activity in the heart due to an irregular rhythm
Around 60,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen in the UK every year and the use of a defibrillator within three-five minutes increases survival chances from six per cent to 74 per cent
Learners are encouraged to get hands-on during the course
with the opportunity to try out their CPR skills on a manikin as well as using a training defibrillator – while being supported and advised by an experienced first aid trainer
said: “Having the knowledge and confidence to do CPR and use an AED can literally be the difference between life and death in an emergency
Both classes will run in the morning from 10am -12.30pm

A fundraiser that aims to raise £65,000 to provide support for the charity ‘Freya’s little legs’ nears closer to the target
who hopes to raise much needed funds so that his daughter so she can receive access to physio and specialist equipment
Freya who has cerebral palsy was born with two holes in her heart
and has already been through three operations before the age of five
Now fighting through six major operations but “she remains to capture” the hearts of many with her “infectious smile and personality.”
through her struggles and having cerebral palsy
it has led to many other complications with her physical health
These obstacles have meant that Freya needs to receive physio
operations and treatments to make her more comfortable
these treatments aren’t available with the NHS
which has created bigger problems for Darren with the costs building up
And her recent SDR surgery on her spine in January 2018
relieved a good proportion of the tightness in her legs
But as she is growing up and becoming not as mobile
Freya also had to have double hip reconstruction surgery in October 2021
and will need this therapy for many years to come and the rest of her life
He continued: “Freya gets nothing from the NHS for post surgery or physio.”
Freya is also now developing scoliosis and requires a spinal operation later this year
Darren is trying to raise the money through charitable events and donations
As he continued: “Freya gets nothing from the NHS for post surgery or physio.”
But it hasn’t stopped Darren from trying to reach much needed funds
as he continued: “There is no limit on how much I want to raise for Freya.”
despite his best efforts the fundraising has taken its toll on Darren
who struggles as a full-time working single dad to be Freya’s primary carer
He continued: “It takes a huge toll on my emotional and physical health but I have to remain positive for my child.”
Although he also added that the battle of fighting to get his daughter the money she deserves and has made him “a stronger person and made him a bit more outspoken.”
despite Darren’s battle to raise money
If the money raised for Freya is not spent on her by the time she is 25
it will be absorbed back into the charity he has used to raise the money
he has been looking at alternative method of raising funds that include setting up Freya’s own charity in her name so that she will be able to keep all the funds
He said: “The options I have is to create a charity of her own which is a big operation but its something I am willing to do.”
The conditions and struggles that she has faced throughout her life
she continues to remain active by swimming with her dad and enjoys her time at school
As Darren continued: “She is just like any other 14 year old
she’s always smiling and is a happy little girl.”
The money raised will look to be beneficial for the future of Freya
with one of the pieces of equipment from the raised funds would be used for is a specialist electric wheelchair
something which her dad says would help Freya become more independent
The vital fundraiser will be essential for the future of Freya’s life and can be donated here.
People in Irlam and surrounding areas of Salford spotted a SpaceX fuel dump across the city’s night sky
Ashley Davies said: “I noticed it at around 8.15pm
I was putting the rubbish in the bins when I first saw it in the sky.”
Those who witnessed the strange light also noted a ‘vapour’ surrounding it
with the light emitting blue and white hues across the sky
The ‘spinning light’ is now confirmed to be the fuel dump from SpaceX’s launch of the Falcon 9 rocket
which took place in Florida just hours before the fuel was spotted over Salford
The rocket uses the fuel initially to gain momentum during lift off
said: “My husband is a bit of a sceptic
initially he thought it was a UFO because of the spiral effect and the speed
“It’s not something you typically see in Irlam
What’s more interesting is how far it’s travelled
and yet we still got to see it here – very cool.”
The rocket was launched from the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Brevard County
The Falcon 9 is currently operated by Elon Musk’s SpaceX and is one of 34 launches that have taken place so far in 2025
said: “It’s unusual to see something like that over Salford.”
The Salford Astronomical Society are a group that are interested in the telescopic and binocular viewing of rockets
Gareth continued: “We have some members that have been doing astronomy for years
and they’ve never witnessed anything like this before.”
Reports suggest that the fuel dump was also spotted in Lincolnshire
