ANAHEIM -- Manager Ron Washington went up to the mound to get the ball from relief pitcher Brock Burke, who had allowed two runners to get into scoring position in the top of the ninth inning. By the time Washington looked up, Kenley Jansen was already out there
“You saw how bad he wanted it,” Washington said of his closer
We told him if they got two on that he was coming in the game
And he wanted this opportunity again."
Part of Jansen’s eagerness to get on the mound on Saturday night to wrap up the Angels’ 5-2 victory over the Tigers at Angel Stadium was to close the door on the worst outing of his career the previous night
The other part of it was more simple: Jansen just wanted to help his team win
“You just got to go back out there,” Jansen said
you’re going to continue to learn crazy things happen
but for the team as a whole as the 16-year veteran drew a groundout and a lineout for a three-pitch save
ending the Angels’ seven-game losing streak
and pros don't back down,” Washington said
trying to accept what's happened to us and just keep working through it
but we've been in a lot of ballgames and we're still learning how to win
We're going to have to start learning how to close ballgames down at the back end
and that's something we just have to keep doing.”
It was a much-needed win for the Angels. It was a much-needed save for Jansen. But it was also a much-needed win for starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks
who in his previous start gave up seven runs on three hits and five walks in three innings against the Twins
Hendricks had a shutout going into the eighth before allowing his only run of the night -- a solo homer from Spencer Torkelson
Hendricks threw 7 2/3 innings -- his longest outing of the season -- and allowed four hits (two of which came in the eighth)
I felt much better about the ball coming out
a couple of things we changed mechanically,” Hendricks said before sharing credit with catcher Travis d’Arnaud
and it’s just a matter of execution and not tipping
so I felt like I cleaned a few things up and executed better.”
earned his first victory since signing with the Angels in the offseason
coming to these ballgames,” said Hendricks
Part of Hendricks’ success on Saturday was his sinker
which drew five of his 10 swings-and-misses
He credits d’Arnaud and the rest of the catchers for forcing him to go to his sinker early and often
since it isn’t a pitch that Hendricks is likely to throw himself

it also helps when your offense scores four runs in the sixth inning to give you room for error
getting the five-run lead and making the plays behind me,” Hendricks said
The Angels’ veterans pushed them to victory on Saturday
And there was Luis Rengifo’s two-RBI single in the sixth inning
and Saturday marked both a step in the right direction and a teachable moment
“I just hope they learn from it,” Jansen said
“I don’t care how good you are or whatever

Amid a season charged with high stakes and bold ambitions
the Chicago Cubs are strategically poised to bolster their bullpen as they edge closer to the coveted National League Central title
With the promise of veteran expertise arriving from former Red Sox circles
the Cubs are setting the stage for a postseason push that could redefine their fortunes
Veteran Leadership and Bullpen Reliability
One of the key figures emerging in this narrative is 36-year-old closer Ryan Pressly
Though his professional journey never saw him don the Red Sox major league uniform
his early career was indelibly linked to the organization
having been drafted by Boston and spending several formative years in its minor league system
Pressly’s resume speaks for itself: a two-time All-Star and a crucial contributor to a World Series championship with the Houston Astros
displaying consistent excellence with the Cubs—garnering a 2-1 record
and pocketing four saves in just 13 appearances—Pressly has become an indispensable asset in late-inning situations
especially as Chicago’s club exudes a winning 21-13 record
Understanding the transient nature of athletic performance
Chicago appears keenly aware of the need for reliable reinforcements
The current approach suggests that bringing in another closer-type could further solidify the bullpen
Such an addition would not only serve as a dependable setup man for Pressly during crucial moments but also provide the Cubs with a formidable backup option
In an environment where every inning is pivotal
this dual-layered strategy of experience and depth underscores the team’s commitment to excellence and resiliency
Complementing Pressly’s proven track record
speculation has grown around the potential acquisition of another seasoned reliever
With recent struggles casting a shadow over his current team
his velocity and spin are exactly what a winning environment needs
If he seeks a new beginning with frequent success
his talents will undoubtedly find a welcome home.” This prospect
highlights not simply the allure of individual brilliance but also the strategic vision underlying the Cubs’ plans
The possibility of integrating such an experienced arm hints at a larger commitment to both immediate performance and sustainable
The Cubs’ focus on strengthening the bullpen reveals a larger narrative about their season-long ambitions
The blend of emerging and veteran talents is crafted to consistently counter high-pressure scenarios
ensuring that no late-inning challenge goes unanswered
Such strategic moves serve as a testament to the organization’s foresight and readiness to make decisive
game-changing decisions as they edge closer to the postseason
In the ever-evolving landscape of professional baseball
these calculated adjustments to the bullpen underscore a profound belief in seizing opportunity when it arises
The Cubs’ journey is not simply about filling roster slots—it is a demonstration of how experience
can lay the groundwork for both immediate impact and enduring legacy

was fatally struck by a train at Bourneview Level Crossing in Croydon on January 23
News | London
A probe has been launched after an 11-year-old school pupil was fatally struck by a train at a footpath crossing in south London
Jaiden Shehata, a pupil at Riddlesdown Collegiate, was struck by a train and fatally injured while crossing the Bourneview footpath crossing between Whyteleafe and Kenley in Croydon
Announcing a probe into the incident, the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) said the train had been going at around 50mph at the time of the incident
Officials said their probe would investigate any factors that may have affected the child’s decisions as he used the crossing
and any previous incidents at the footpath
Riddlesdown Collegiate described Jaiden as a “kind and popular” student
and a “valued member” of the school community
It told parents in a letter: “We know the loss is being felt by many and we are doing everything we can to support his friends
family and the wider student and staff community at this difficult time.”
The school has also advised its pupils against using the crossing
The investigation is separate to any investigations carried out by the railway industry or the Office of Rail and Road
It comes as nearly 4,000 people signed a petition calling for action on the Bourneview level crossing in the wake of the youngster’s death.
The petition states: “This hazardous crossing is directly responsible for the heartrending grief and the unnecessary loss of precious lives.
“The anguish of losing a child is something no parent should ever have to experience, especially due to an avoidable hazard like this.

“The fatal incident involving the young boy should serve as a call to action for us all, to prevent any more families from experiencing this pain.”
The crossing provides access for pedestrians over the railway line bisecting Kenley.
According to the RAIB, it has gates on either side and signage instructing users on how to cross.
A report will be published once the investigation has concluded.
The British Transport Police said the incident “is not being treated as suspicious.”

There isn't one reliever that manager Brian Snitker knows he can call on and receive predictable results
there hasn't been a reliable level of production from any level of Atlanta's pen
There is some hope that former Atlanta closer Craig Kimbrel will become a surprise solution for the middle innings
As the Braves enter May, there isn't any question that the biggest concern is a lack of bullpen depth
The best fit could be former Atlanta closer
Jansen has been dominant to start the year and is a part of a roster that won't sustain a solid start
let's look at what a potential trade would look like to bring in a potential closing or setup option
Elison Joseph is currently ranked as Atlanta's 28th overall prospect, while outfielder Jarred Kelenic is in need of a fresh start
The Braves have already demoted Kelenic this season and don't appear to be factoring the outfielder into their future plans
Joseph is a lower prospect who would be worth parting with for bullpen stability
the team isn't going to be a contender and would be wise to trade veterans for prospects or in Kelenic's place a reclamation project
The trade price is low based Jansen's age and inconsistent recent history
The closer has been incredible to start the 2025 season
and will be a great addition to Atlanta's pen while also being a short-term answer
Kenley Jansen was Atlanta's closer in the 2022 season before landing with Boston the following season after the Braves traded for another Angels reliever in Raisel Iglesias. This was far from the last time the two sides would exchange players
with the Angels and Braves clearly having a great trading relationship
the Braves should attempt to utilize the relationship and reunite with another former closer
It makes sense for both sides and gives Atlanta much-needed stability at the back end of the bullpen

Bolstering bullpen depth while sending Jarred Kelenic out of town is the win-win trade the Braves need
as he gave up six earned runs and six hits in only two-thirds of an inning
he had been one of the best bullpen arms in baseball
He had not allowed a run in eight games pitched
yielding only five hits and recording eight strikeouts
he had only walked two batters and accumulated six saves

$10 million contract with the Los Angeles Angels pending a physical on Monday
a day before pitchers and catchers reported to spring training in Tempe
His signing removes the most successful high-leverage reliever from the free agent market and also gives the Angels more runway to develop expected future closer Ben Joyce and his 105-mph fastball
Jansen has built his career on a cut fastball
the pitch that brought Mariano Rivera to prominence
and he threw it 84.9% of time a year ago while sprinkling in a very occasional sinking fastball and slider
pitches he used more often in his final two seasons with the Dodgers in 2020-21

who at 37 could be considered a snort-term solution
has 447 saves in a 15-career that was transformed when then-Dodgers player personnel staffer De Jon Watson suggested a move from catching to pitching
A four-time All Star with four 40-plus save seasons, Jansen spent the last two seasons with the Boston Red Sox, where he had 56 saves in 105 appearances after signing a two-year
He left the Dodgers after the 2021 season and spent 2022 in Atlanta before going to Boston
Jansen was 4-2 with a 3.29 ERA and 27 saves and four blown saves a year ago
He is the active major league leader in career saves
pitching appearances (871) and games finished (653)
He will be the latest free agent to take over as closer for a team that has not had a a 40-save season since 2015

the fourth-most among the 90 pitchers enshrined
Mariano Rivera (652) and Trevor Hoffman (601) are the only closers with more than 600 saves
when the position gained traction among voters despite the relative lack of innings
Jansen also has been particularly effective in the postseason
with a 2.20 ERA and 20 saves in 59 appearances
He averaged 12.9 strikeouts per nine innings with a 5.22:1 strikeout to walk ratio
the Angels’ third-round pick in the 2022 draft out of Tennessee
settled in as a setup man after Eztévez and Luis Garcia were traded the the deadline last season for a bullpen that had a 3.36 ERA the final two months of the season
according to the Orange County (Calif.) Register
Joyce was 2-0 with four saves and a 2.08 ERA in 31 appearances a year ago
But he has pitched only 44 2/3 innings in two brief stints with the Angels
the Halos have fallen back down the standings
Los Angeles sits at a measly 12-19 and dead last in the American League West division
The Angels are three games back of being the fourth-best team in their division after a promising start
This losing streak climaxed on Friday with an embarrassing 9-1 defeat at home against the Detroit Tigers
Eight of those runs came in the ninth inning
six of which were scored off closer Kenley Jansen
Los Angeles Angels pitcher Kenley Jansen (74)
Jansen entered the game with a perfect 0.00 ERA
showing flashes of what made him a four-time All-Star before coming to the Angels
which marked LA's seventh straight loss
“Sometimes you stink," he said
Jansen's outing ballooned his ERA to a 6.23 mark in 8.2 innings pitched
While better days may be ahead for Jansen and the Angels
it seems like the sky is falling in Los Angeles after this loss.
After losing the first two games of the series
the Angels will host Detroit for the remaining two games this weekend
The Tigers sit atop the American League central with a 21-12 record
and have proven to be a tough opponent for an Angels team trending in the opposite direction

TEMPE – There may be no better way to develop a 6-foot-5 freak of nature who can hurl a baseball 105 mph than pairing him with one of the best closers of a generation
a player who has won on the game’s biggest stage
That was the master plan that Los Angeles Angels general manager Perry Minasian had in mind during the offseason when he signed Kenley Jansen
a four-time All-Star and 2020 World Series champion closer
the Angels’ flamethrowing 24-year-old right-hander from the University of Tennessee
“It’s going to be sick,” said Angels catcher Logan O’Hoppe
And I know Joyce is adopting that same mindset
and I know how much Kenley is helping out that group in the bullpen.”
Jansen made his MLB debut in 2010 and brings 14 years of major league experience to share with Joyce
Jansen is still pitching at an elite level
He slammed the door for 27 saves in 31 attempts in 2024 for Boston while maintaining a 3.29 ERA over 54 appearances
learning from Kenley has been a pleasure,” Joyce said
“His mentality that he takes to the field everyday and how he approaches the game out on the mound
knowing that the game is over and he is going to finish the game
that mentality rubs off on the young guys that we have.”
Jansen is also known for remaining available throughout his career
He has appeared in at least 50 games every year since 2011
And now he is providing Joyce with insight into remaining healthy
“It’s been cool to have a guy like Kenley here
who can give me some more knowledge in the department of how they take care of their body for a full season,” said Joyce
“Seeing how he prepares his body to be able to pitch in the ninth inning everyday
three days in a row or whatever it might be
Jansen has embraced the role of serving as a mentor for Joyce and wants to help him reach his ceiling to become one of the best relievers in the game
“He is going to accomplish a lot of things
and I just try to spread wisdom to him whenever he needs
Both of us need to compete at a high level to help this ballclub.”
Joyce’s fastball instantly proved to be a dominant pitch when he started his professional career by striking out 20 batters in 13 innings while posting a 2.08 ERA for the Double-A Rocket City Trash Pandas in Madison
He was called up to the Angels in May 2023 and endured an up-and-down year as he flashed his potential with velocity that could make him one of the most intimidating relievers in baseball to face
He also displayed signs of being rushed up to the majors too quickly as he suffered from ulnar neuritis
which landed him on the 60-day injured list
and struggled to command his heater at times
posting 8.1 walks per nine innings in his rookie season
Joyce was sent down to Rocket City to begin the 2024 season
where the organization wanted him to continue his development
“It’s tough mentally for sure,” Joyce said of going back down
It’s the dream that you have had since you were a little kid
You realize you don’t know everything and that ‘I am not where I want to be.’
“And I think that was the best thing that could’ve happened for me
because I learned how to grind through those tough times.”
Joyce was called back up to the Angels in June 2024 and caught fire – or more accurately
He posted a 2.08 ERA in the 2024 season with 33 strikeouts in 34.2 innings
Joyce lowered his walks per nine innings to 3.6
Joyce attracted mainstream attention last season on Sept
when he uncorked a 105.5 mph fastball to strikeout Tommy Edman of the crosstown rival Los Angeles Dodgers
It was the third fastest pitch ever recorded in the pitch tracking era that dates to 2008

“I don’t exactly know where it comes from,” Joyce said of his velocity
“My mechanics have gotten to this point where they work for my body
and I have built myself up strength wise and mobility wise to be able to handle it
trying to throw and getting my body into the position where it can do that.”
Jansen has quite the decorated career and has seen just about everything in his time
yet he is still blown away by the talent that Joyce possesses
it’s not just about throwing hard with the stuff that he has
it is just trying to make sure he’s always advanced and keeps learning on the fast track
That’s how he’s going to help us win ball games
We’re going to need everyone and especially him.”
Joyce made his first appearance of the spring Saturday against the Athletics
striking out one and allowing only one hit
“I really wanted to execute my four-seam (fastball) first off
and I felt like I did that well,” Joyce said
and I think I was able to get a few good off-speed pitches in there
but for me it was just pounding the zone and getting ahead which I felt I did pretty well but there is always room to improve.”
Jansen also made his first spring appearance against the Athletics
retiring the three batters he faced in order
This season Joyce will be half of a talented duo at the back-end of the Angels bullpen along with Jansen
a combination the Angels believe will lead to success
“Let’s try to bring this team back to the winning culture
Jansen has not played in the postseason the past two years with the Red Sox
He looks to end his personal dry spell by assisting an Angels team that has the longest active playoff drought in the majors – 10 seasons without a postseason game
and nobody expects us to make the playoffs,” Jansen said
“But it’s up to us to go out there and prove that we belong here.”
His young counterpart in the bullpen has similar goals for the Angels in 2025
I want to be part of a winning team,” Joyce said
“I think we all want to win here and we know that we can win here
so our goal is to pitch in the postseason and see where we can go from there.”

The issue for Angels players is playing a night game on Thursday, then hopping on a plane to Minnesota where they will likely get in very late overnight before a 7:40 p.m. ET first pitch against the Twins on Friday.
"I don’t know when we’re supposed to land
Angels closer Kenley Jansen told Blum the situation isn't "healthy for anybody" because of how much stress the combination of late-night travel and playing games can put on the body
"To finish playing a night game like that
get in at six in the morning," Jansen said
and the next couple days you have 1 o’clock games
Blum noted the start time was picked by Angels management
with the possibility they were anticipating Paul Skenes might be starting for the Pirates
The 2024 NL Rookie of the Year is scheduled to start on Friday night against the Los Angeles Dodgers
In asking Angels owner Arte Moreno and president John Carpino about the possibility of a Skenes start
Blum wrote that neither one answered whether or not that was a factor in the decision to start the game at the latest time allowed under the CBA
Another complicating factor in this decision is the airport the Angels have to use to get to Minnesota
their usual airports in Orange County (Long Beach Airport or John Wayne Airport) likely won't be available because they have 10 p.m
Even though the game will likely be over before 10 p.m
when you factor in all of the postgame activities and packing up for a flight
the odds of the Angels being able to make it to either spot by that time is remote
the Angels will have to fly out of Los Angeles International Airport that adds roughly 30 minutes to their trip
Sunday's game is also starting 30 minutes earlier to accommodate Game 4 of the Lakers-Timberwolves
One rival executive told Blum this is a frequent problem when playing the Angels
saying it would be "great" if they would change how they operate
The executive did add it's not limited to the Angels
citing the Houston Astros and Baltimore Orioles as other examples of teams that cause difficult travel schedules for their opponents
aren't going to be as negatively impacted by the start team because they are staying on the west coast this weekend for a three-game series with the Dodgers
Los Angeles is off to a decent start this season
The Angels are 11-11 going into Thursday's game against the Pirates
but they have lost seven of their last 10 games after an 8-4 start

the Los Angeles Angels find themselves at a crucial juncture
Amid a fluctuating record and rising trade speculations
the outlook for a promising playoff bid hangs in the balance as critical decisions loom in the front office
The Angels began this season with a burst of momentum
their record has slipped to an even 12-12 over the most recent 24 games
This early promise now intersects with the stark reality of an end-of-season pattern that has long tempered expectations
leaving the team’s management to weigh every strategic move carefully
veteran reliever Kenley Jansen has emerged as a focal point of debate
Jansen’s days of overwhelming dominance may have passed
yet his cutter continues to deliver when called upon
allowing only five hits and no runs while striking out eight
even if questions remain about his suitability in high-pressure postseason moments
There is an acknowledgment that while he may not be the ideal choice for closing a decisive Game 7
his consistent performance offers substantial value
particularly for teams experiencing uncertainty in their bullpen
Historical Significance and Career Trajectory
is a testament to his enduring talent and adaptability
Having spent the bulk of his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers
and with previous stints in Boston and Atlanta
his journey in professional baseball has been marked by resilience and reinvention
Signing with the Angels on a one-year deal brought both hope and pragmatic caution—given that he will return to free agency after the season
his current value is a hot topic in discussions about maximizing return from a seasoned arm
Strategic Implications for Playoff Aspirations
The potential move to trade Jansen is far from a mere roster adjustment; it is emblematic of a broader dilemma facing the Angels
If the season unfolds favorably and a postseason appearance looms
retaining his veteran presence might prove essential
should the team’s trajectory signal another season spent outside playoff contention
a trade involving Jansen could unlock fresh talent and inject new energy into the roster
This decision will undoubtedly influence the team’s competitive strategy
balancing the immediate need for clutch performances against the promise of future development
As the Angels navigate these pivotal moments
the unfolding narrative of Jansen’s final season with the club encapsulates the broader challenges inherent in professional sports—where every inning
and every trade decision shapes the journey
The coming weeks will not only determine whether the team reaches the playoffs but will also highlight the enduring impact of veteran leadership and strategic risk-taking
the critical crossroads facing the Angels is a reminder that in baseball
success often hinges on the courage to adapt and the wisdom to know when to preserve retiring talent or pivot toward new horizons

USA; Boston Red Sox pitcher Kenley Jansen (74) pitches against the Minnesota Twins during the ninth inning at Fenway Park
The Los Angeles Angels are actively seeking to strengthen their bullpen
and two potential options have emerged: Kenley Jansen and Kyle Finnegan
the team is also considering promoting rising star Ben Joyce to the closer role
This decision could have a significant impact on the team’s performance in the upcoming season
brings a wealth of experience to the table
Having last earned the All-Star honor in 2023 as a member of the Boston Red Sox
Jansen has consistently proven himself as a reliable closer
made his first and only All-Star appearance in 2024
While he may not have the same level of experience as Jansen
the Angels’ front office is also considering the option of entrusting the closer role to Ben Joyce
The 24-year-old was drafted by the Angels in the third round of the 2022 draft from the University of Tennessee and made his debut in 2023
recording a 2.08 ERA and four saves in 31 appearances
coupled with his ability to consistently throw pitches exceeding 100 MPH
has caught the attention of both the coaching staff and fans
Manager Ron Washington has expressed confidence in Joyce’s ability to handle the closer role
he also acknowledges the challenges that come with the position
especially for a young player who has yet to experience the demands of a full 162-game season
While Washington is comfortable with Joyce as the closer
he understands the importance of monitoring his progress throughout the season
Joyce’s journey to the majors has not been without its obstacles
Initially vying for a spot in the bullpen in 2024
he underwent various preparations to acclimate to the demands of late-game pitching
his determination and resilience shone through when he returned to the majors in June
With the guidance of veteran reliever Hunter Strickland
This adjustment proved pivotal in his development
allowing him to generate more ground balls and become nearly unhittable for the remainder of the season
Joyce’s impressive performance in 2024 has positioned him as a strong candidate for the closer role in the upcoming season
With the Angels yet to acquire a new closer through free agency and veteran reliever Robert Stephenson expected to miss the start of the season due to Tommy John surgery
Joyce’s emergence as a potential closer brings a sense of excitement and anticipation to the team and its fans
and Joyce will significantly impact the Angels’ bullpen strategy for the upcoming season
While Jansen and Finnegan offer experience and proven track records
Joyce represents the team’s future and the potential for a breakout star
The Angels’ front office will need to carefully consider their options and weigh the benefits of each choice
the Angels find themselves at a crossroads
Will they opt for the seasoned expertise of Jansen or Finnegan
or will they place their faith in the rising star
Only time will tell which path the team will take
but one thing is for certain: the Angels’ bullpen will play a crucial role in their pursuit of success in the coming season
Jansen's 450th save caps Angels' escape act in TampaApril 9th
TAMPA -- Kenley Jansen
But Tuesday’s game against the Rays was something he won’t forget anytime soon
“Well, this one's definitely going to be a memorable one,” Jansen said following the Angels’ 4-3 victory at George M
But he’ll also remember it for how he and the rest of the Angels’ bullpen lifted the team to its seventh win in 10 games this season
In the seventh inning, left-hander Garrett McDaniels entered with a runner on third and nobody out and the Angels trailing by a run
In the eighth, lefty Brock Burke had a runner on third with nobody out in a tied game
And in the ninth with the Angels up by a run
Jansen allowed a single and a stolen base to the first two batters he faced
“We’ve just got some dogs in the bullpen,” McDaniels said
“We all contributed in situations today to pick Ben [Joyce] up and pick everybody up
Joyce was the only member of the bullpen who really struggled on this night
He allowed four hits -- three for extra bases -- to the first four hitters he faced in the seventh inning
which turned a 2-0 Angels lead into a 3-2 deficit
Those three extra-base hits came in the span of 12 pitches
Joyce had given up only five extra-base hits
The velocity on his four-seamer and splinker were also down a couple of ticks
but Washington didn’t express any concern after the win
“Our big boy just didn't have it tonight
and the rest of them had to come in and try to keep it where it was,” Washington said
Although McDaniels issued a couple of walks in relief of Joyce
he got out of the bases-loaded jam by striking out Brandon Lowe on a slider in the dirt
Burke’s jam was created by something you never see: Mike Trout misplaying a fly ball
He lost José Caballero’s drive down the right-field line in the lights and could only watch as it fell behind him
Burke responded with strikeouts of Curtis Mead and Christopher Morel and
got a lineout from Danny Jansen to end the frame
Luis Rengifo put the Angels up with a two-out single in the top of the ninth
It wasn’t the cleanest inning in his storied career
“All respect to every hitter,” Jansen said
Jansen got Yandy Díaz to bounce a ball to third base
and Rengifo made the throw home to d’Arnaud to tag out Mangum
Jansen then struck out Lowe and Caballero on his signature cutter -- the pitch that has made him one of the most productive closers the game has seen
“It was something that I've seen before,” Washington said of Jansen’s Houdini act in the ninth
“It was something that I've been a part of before on the opposite side when he’s pulled that off
I sort of felt like we were in a good place when he was out there.”
He also said that it’s fun to hit that mark with this club
It’s the third time in the Wild Card era (since 1995) that the Angels have begun a season by winning seven of their first 10 games
Jansen expects many more wins and “great things” from these Halos
But the hope is those future wins aren’t as suspenseful as what took place Tuesday
As d’Arnaud said immediately after the victory: “Wow

playKenley Jansen signs with the Angels (0:30)Take a look at some of Kenley Jansen's career numbers as he signs with the Angels on a one-year contract
The Los Angeles Angels and veteran closer Kenley Jansen have agreed to a one-year deal worth $10 million
The deal was first reported Tuesday by the New York Post
Jansen, 37, has 447 saves -- the most in Major League Baseball among active pitchers -- over his 15-year career. The right-hander spent the past two seasons with the Boston Red Sox and had 27 saves in 2024
Jansen adds some veteran experience to a promising young Angels bullpen that features the hard-throwing Ben Joyce
who had four saves last season in a brief audition as Los Angeles' closer
Jansen is fourth on baseball's all-time saves list
behind only Hall of Famers Mariano Rivera (652)
A four-time All-Star, Jansen spent his first 12 seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers before joining the Atlanta Braves for the 2022 season. Excluding the COVID-shortened 2020 season, Jansen has recorded at least 25 saves in every season since 2012.
The Angels' new closer allowed an infield single
and a stolen base to get himself into a jam with no outs
Jansen made mincemeat out of the next three Rays batters
and further cemented himself in MLB's record books
Kenley Jansen becomes the fourth pitcher in MLB history to reach 450 career saves and passes Lee Smith for fifth place on the all-time strikeouts list by a reliever https://t.co/pPdSMX9eas
Jansen is already the active leader in games played by a pitcher and saves
but his sights are more set on breaking records held by Hall of Famers
He is 35th all-time in games played by a pitcher
fifth all-time in strikeouts by a reliever (still-active Craig Kimbrel and Aroldis Chapman rank third and fourth all-time)
Jansen is the fourth player ever with 450 saves
and 450+ saves is a great way to describe Jansen's career in a nutshell
was a catcher when he entered professional baseball in 2005
and he once used his prowess to block balls and rattle opposing pitchers from the batter's box
Jansen caught 294.0 innings between A-Ball and Triple-A
but he also made his debut as a pitcher after Dodgers evaluators deemed he needed to transition over
He tossed 11.2 innings for Inland Empire in '09
then affiliated with the Los Angeles Dodgers
Jansen improbably made his MLB debut on July 24th and wound up logging four saves
and even finished seventh in NL Rookie of the Year voting
His whole career, Jansen has wanted to win and compete at the highest level and he maintains that fire to this day. “Just never give in,” Jansen said to Jeff Fletcher of The OC Register after logging save no
“Just continue to pitch and slow the game down
It helped me get out of this one.” Jansen never gave in when he was moved from behind the plate to on the mound
He brings that grit and championship mentality to a franchise desperate for it
Angels fans are lucky enough to be rooting for Jansen's individual success
as it has a direct correlation on their favorite team winning games
He is now 29 saves away from passing Lee Smith for third all-time on that leaderboard
Kenley Jansen has proven that doubting him is a fruitless endeavor

but this isn't the only category that the new closer of the Halos is chasing owned by Smith

has the third most saves of all time with 478
Jansen is right behind him with 449 and already two saves this season

Closer and likely future Hall of Famer Kenley Jansen is returning for a 16th season
Jon Heyman and Joel Sherman of the NY Post reported Jansen will sign a one-year
Kenley Jansen has agreed to a 1 yr, $10M deal with the Angels @JonHeyman 1st
— Joel Sherman (@Joelsherman1) February 11, 2025
Kenley Jansen is entering his age-37 season and spent the last two years with the Boston Red Sox
The big righty has also pitched for the Dodgers and Braves
taking home a World Series ring with Los Angeles in 2020
His 447 career saves lead among active players and rank fourth on the all-time list
Jansen is also just 31 saves away from tying with Hall-of-Famer Lee Smith in third place
They’ve already boosted their rotation with Yusei Kikuchi
they’ve locked down the back end of the bullpen with a future Hall of Famer in Jansen
Kenley Jansen is all but certainly bound for Cooperstown at some point
He stands out even in an era where true star stoppers are a dying breed and the closer position interchangeable
he’s a “compiler” at this stage of his career
like new Giants righty Justin Verlander and Jansen’s fellow closer Craig Kimbrel
Kenley Jansen still pitches at a high level
but still posts numbers as if he were ten years younger
pitching for an overachieving Red Sox team
That means that if you re-calculated Jansen’s stats from last year so that he only issued walks
it’s been a theme throughout his career
His 2.57 career ERA is basically on par with his 2.54 FIP
Jansen has always been great with or without the mercy of his teammates’ gloves behind him
Signing Kenley Jansen doesn’t put the Angels over the top
They’ll still need to fight and claw their way through the season just to be in the Wild Card conversation
But in a year when the AL West is open and a Hall of Fame resume needs padding
Jansen could certainly do worse than signing on with the other Los Angeles team
Halos' 'pen could be 'something special'March 1st
TEMPE, Ariz. -- After a breakout rookie season that saw him post a 0.83 ERA over his final 28 outings of the year and hit as high as 105.5 mph on the radar gun with his fastball, it looked like Ben Joyce might get a chance to be the club’s closer in 2025
But the Angels signed veteran right-hander Kenley Jansen to a one-year deal worth $10 million on Feb. 15 to be their closer, shifting Joyce into a setup role. The Angels believe Jansen, MLB’s active saves leader with 447
who isn’t quite ready to assume the duties of being a full-time closer
Both relievers made their Cactus League debuts in the Angels' 5-0 win over the A’s on Saturday
as Jansen threw a 1-2-3 fourth inning and Joyce hurled a scoreless seventh with a strikeout
both said they are excited to work together this season and build a dominant back end of the bullpen
“I’m going to do everything I can do to help him
I think he's going to be an unbelievable closer in the future
I want him to push me and for us to do something really special down there at the back
got his first taste of closing last year after the Angels traded veteran Carlos Estévez to the Phillies at the Trade Deadline
going 4-for-4 in save opportunities down the stretch before being shut down on Sept
His health concerns and the fact he only pitched on consecutive days two times last year were reasons why the Angels brought in Jansen to close this season
But Joyce said he’s excited to learn from him
and will embrace his role as a setup reliever
"It's definitely a different mindset
I'd love to pick his brain on how he approaches it
“To have to do it back to back or three days in a row
just kind of how he goes about that mentally
Because it’s definitely a different ballgame
Angels manager Ron Washington loves what both Jansen and Joyce bring to the bullpen
but noted that they still have to be cautious with Joyce
The club is trying to build him up so that he can withstand the rigors of being a regular closer in the future
He's thrown just 44 2/3 career innings in the Majors and 49 2/3 innings in the Minors since being selected in the third round of the 2022 Draft out of the University of Tennessee
"We’ve got to really be careful because he showed us that he can give us one inning or an inning-plus
sometimes we're going to lose him [for a day or two],” Washington said
“So we've just got to watch him and see if he could take over just being an eighth-inning guy because we've got guys that can take care of the sixth and the seventh
Catcher Logan O’Hoppe, Joyce’s roommate this spring, said he believes Joyce will put it all together because of his intense work ethic. Joyce became unhittable last year after adding a sinker -- or “splinker” -- to his arsenal that he pairs with his incredible four-seamer
"He's one of the hardest workers we have
and he's going to be in a big role for us,” O’Hoppe said
“He's ready for whatever that role may be
because obviously I don't want to stand there with a bat in my hand against him.”
also believes he has plenty left in the tank
as the likely future Hall of Famer is aiming to become the third closer to ever reach 500 career saves
The 15-year veteran had a 3.29 ERA with 27 saves with the Red Sox last year and thinks the Angels can surprise with their young core and mix of veterans this season
"My expectation is to help this ballclub win ball games,” Jansen said
Jansen secured the save in Thursday's 4-3 win over Pittsburgh after allowing one hit in a scoreless ninth inning
Jansen poured in 14 of his 18 pitches for strikes
and he got Oneil Cruz to line out to end the game while the possible tying run was on first base
The 37-year-old right-hander has looked very sharp in the early going
giving up just five hits and two walks with eight punchouts while converting each of his six save chances over eight shutout innings to open the campaign
With Ben Joyce (shoulder) also on the injured list
Jansen is being relied upon even more for high-leverage work
Just days before pitchers and catchers report for spring training
the Los Angeles Angels scooped up one of the best remaining closers on the free-agent market
$10 million contract with veteran Kenley Jansen
Source confirms: Free-agent closer Kenley Jansen in agreement with Angels on one-year, $10M contract, pending physical. First: @JonHeyman, @Joelsherman1
The move puts the future Hall of Famer back in Los Angeles but with the team across town
the fantasy value of the rest of the bullpen arms
and what can we expect from Jansen this year
Even if he’s not as dominant as we’ve come to expect
Jansen has remained as steady as they come
He has recorded at least 25 saves in 12 straight full seasons since 2012
but Jansen has settled in around 50 innings per season and continues to deliver at the end of games
converting 56-of-64 save chances in his two years in Boston
Jansen has leaned even more into his cutter
He threw the pitch 58% of the time in 2021
The biggest change as a result of that has been him essentially eliminating his sinker
which he threw 22% of the time when he was in Atlanta in 2022
the pitch was fairly average across the board
It did miss more bats than the average sinker but was also not a groundball pitch with just a 23.5% groundball rate and 59% flyball rate
It’s possible that his move to Fenway Park caused him to eliminate that flyball offering for fear of those turning into home runs over the Green Monster
its velocity is down slightly from 2023 but is in line with what he did in 2021 when he had a dominant year for the Dodgers
The cutter pounds the strike zone at a well above-average clip and also has a 14% swinging strike rate
which is above-average for relievers across the league
It is in the 83rd percentile in terms of CSW and 63rd percentile for ICR
so even if the pitch itself doesn’t grade out as well as it did in its heyday
even though it didn’t miss many bats in 2024
is a pitch he can command in the strike zone and with more horizontal movement than he had on it previously
It’s designed simply to keep hitters from sitting on his cutter
we should expect Jansen to assume the closer duties for the Angels
and while that doesn’t seem like an enticing gig
remember that Carlos Estevez saved 20 games for them last season in just 34 innings
Jansen could easily snag between 20-25 saves while pitching somewhere near 50 innings with a 3.40-3.50 ERA that has been about his standard level over the last three years
If we believe he will continue to slowly regress in his strikeout rate
which would mean around 57 strikeouts in his 50 innings
How does this impact Kenley Jansen’s fantasy value
you shouldn’t use a top-100 pick on Jansen
where Trevor Megill is going in the eight NFBC Online Championships this month
the next closer off the board has been Kirby Yates at pick 140
who we now know is not the primary closer for the Dodgers
so it’s hard to see Jansen falling farther than that part of the draft
There is the risk that Kenley will be traded away from the Angels in the second half of the season
but I’d still bank on him being traded to a team that is willing to give him at least a share of the closer’s job
Who is most impacted in the Angels’ bullpen
The player most impacted by this is Ben Joyce since the 24-year-old seemed likely to take over the main closer duties in 2025
Joyce had been going off the board at pick 177 in the NFBC Online Championships this month
Joyce had some struggles adjusting to MLB hitting and posted a 3.97 ERA in his first 11 innings with six walks and 10 strikeouts
that 25% strikeout rate feels low for a guy who averages 102 mph on his four-seam fastball
His four-seamer had a 17.1% swinging strike rate
It has a high strike rate but is more of a “get this over” pitch than a pitch he can consistently spot upstairs
That’s why it has league-average ICR rates
He also has a sinker that misses fewer bats and he can’t command in the zone as well
and then a slider that had just an 11% swinging strike rate last year (below the 15.5% average for relievers) and graded out poorly in PLV
So right now Joyce doesn’t have a go-to swing-and-miss secondary pitch
and his average fastball command leads to him getting hit harder than you’d like to see
Perhaps another year to learn and adapt as an MLB reliever makes sense for him
so why would they pay $10 million for a 37-year-old closer
we just covered that Joyce doesn’t seem ready to be the main closer
so the Angels needed somebody else back there with him
the Angels signed a bunch of veterans who seem to be nearing the ends of their careers like Jorge Soler
The team is trying to take low-cost risks on veterans who other teams have turned the page on in the hopes that they can get another strong year of production out of them and put together a strong enough lineup around Mike Trout to sneak into the playoffs
signing Kenley Jansen fits the bill perfectly
The other advantage to signing Kenley Jansen is that he will be an enticing trade chip if/when the Angels fall out of the postseason race
There will be a contender who is willing to part with an interesting prospect or two to add Kenley to their bullpen for the stretch run
So that makes this a fairly low-risk move for the Angels heading into 2025

there’s an impetus for splitting the closing duties
Jansen has remained an effective back-end option
