Infrastructure Minister John O’Dowd has announced that a £575,000 carriageway resurfacing scheme on the A2 Newcastle Road

The resurfacing scheme will involve the asphalt resurfacing of a 1.9 kilometre stretch of the Newcastle Road from a point 350 metres south of Council Road junction to a point close to the Ballykeel Road near Ballymartin
“This is a substantial investment for the Kilkeel area which will deliver significant benefits for residents and road users
The investment demonstrates my commitment to improving our rural road network
which is vital for connecting our businesses and communities
This work will greatly improve the strength and surface quality of this section of the road network to the benefit of local residents
businesses and those travelling in the Kilkeel area
Work is expected to be substantially completed by Friday 21 March 2025. I would like to thank residents
local businesses and commuters for their patience while this essential infrastructure work is carried out.”

which will commence from 9:30 am to 16:30 pm
from Monday 10 February to Friday 21 March 2025
An alternative route will be signed with traffic being diverted via the following route:
The Department has programmed the work operations and traffic management arrangements to minimise inconvenience however
while steps have been taken to accommodate local access and Translink bus and school services throughout the scheme, road users should expect some delays and are advised to allow additional time when travelling in the vicinity of the works and are asked to comply with all temporary traffic restrictions
the works will be substantially complete by Friday 21 March 2025, however the Department will keep the public informed of any change

A young boy has been hospitalised after being ‘thrown from his bike’ in a hit-and-run road traffic collision in Kilkeel
The PSNI is appealing for any person that may have witnessed the collision to get in touch
The incident happened at approximately 2pm on Thursday
There are no details of the registration but the car was displaying 'R' plates and was reportedly driven by a female

“If you happened to be in the area and witnessed the collision

The case was heard at Newry Magistrates Court
TRYING to steal over £300 worth of groceries from Tesco before assaulting a security guard who tried to stop him has seen a Kilkeel man handed a suspended prison sentence
criminal damage and common assault at Newry Magistrates Court
The court heard that at 1.30am on 30 September this year
police were called to Asda in Kilkeel after security staff had seen McCartan trying to leave the store with a large trolley full of items without making any effort to pay for them
The security staff tried to take control of the trolley
but McCartan immediately became aggressive to the security guard and a struggle ensued over the trolley
He then let go of the trolley and kicked the security guard in the leg before he started pulling items from the trolley and ripping them open so they could no longer be resold
A total of £340.68 of items had been taken
with £26.19 worth of the goods destroyed by McCartan
Defence counsel conceded his client had been in breach of a suspended sentence imposed in relation to a domestic incident
He said McCartan has had difficulties with alcohol but it is “clear he is addressing his alcohol problem” and “for the first time ever” he is now “engaged and focused on his children”
“He recognises his behaviour was just outrageous
it was more of an attempted theft than a theft
but his encounter with the security guard was unacceptable.”
District Judge Eamonn King said: “Any quick perusal of your record shows you were on a very quick downward spiral and were getting to the point if you were back in court again
the only option to the court would be to lock you up immediately
“I could do that because you are in breach of a suspended sentence
but given you are trying to address your issues
it might lead you to a better place - the rekindling of the relationship with your children
And if you have any thought for them you will appreciate them and learn your children are far better for you than alcohol
putting in the hours for low wages and they aren't there to be abused
Judge King imposed a four month prison sentence
but suspended it for 18 months and made a compensation order of £26.19 in favour of Tesco
No order was made in regard to the suspended sentence of which McCartan was in breach

Stanley Tomkins, a Cork man who moved to Kilkeel in the 1970s to work as a bank manager, raised a whopping £750,000 for charities including Cancer Focus and Save the Children.
The ever-selfless Stanley was motivated to spring to fundraising action after suffering unimaginable personal loss - Stanley's wife and one of his daughters died from cancer
Stanley said he was "astonished" to have won
and joked with UTV's Paul Reilly "where's the cheque?!" when he surprised him with the coveted trophy as family and friends looked on
Stanley's desire to work to improve his adopted home of Kilkeel is evidenced by his fundraising for 'the Jim’s Youth Centre'
The money has gone towards extending and improving the centre and developing a mental health hub
Our new NI Pride of Britain champ turned 87 in August

Laura was described by Marian as a gift to her family who made life special
but she was faced with big challenges to overcome due to Laura’s poor health and prejudice facing people with disabilities in NI at the time

Deirdre Smith has put herself right in contention again this year
County Louth golfer Deirdre Smith secured top spot in the Irish Senior Women’s Amateur Close stroke play qualifying for the second year running
despite a tough day for scoring in Kilkeel
Weather conditions improved on the second day of play but brought with it its own challenges as the August sunshine saw fairways and greens quicken
causing the all-important final qualifying scores to suffer
Smith put together a +8 total to become leading qualifier in this event once again with double bogeys on seven and nine the only downside to a successful two days
“Just disappointed the way I finished because I played better than the score but it’s all about qualifying so that’s the important thing,” said Smith
“I’m happy enough with the way I’m playing
it’s match play so it’s every hole and every shot and today you were trying to maybe not make mistakes too much
so tight and the pins were difficult today.”
The consensus from around the course on Wednesday afternoon was that the Kilkeel parkland will set up to bring an exciting two days of match play and with the County Louth golfer set to face Catherine Reilly (The Heath) in the first match of the day she is looking forward to the challenge that the last 16 tie and the course itself will bring
“You’ll probably be able to go after your shots a little bit more whereas the last couple of days you are trying to not make mistakes rather than going for shots,” said Smith
“You just have to really commit to your targets.”
David Mullholland qualified as the leading scorer in the Senior Men’s championship having carded an opening round 71 on Tuesday followed by a +3 round of 75
Tony Cleary (Spanish Point) awaits in the opening match of the round of 16 and the Castlerock golfer is hoping that the game plan that earned him his number one spot continues to bring joy tomorrow
not often that I’m the leading qualifier in anything so I’m delighted to do that
“There are holes that lend themselves to either layup or driver and in the stroke play there’s no choice really you have to protect the score but tomorrow might be a wee bit different
I don’t think it will change my approach that much to be honest
I’ll stick to what I’m doing and try and get a score again and see how it goes.”
+1 was the low round of the day shared by four in the men’s field
Kilkeel golfer Frank Reilly whose local knowledge not only helped him top the over 60 leaderboard with a final total of +4 but also gave him a place in tomorrow’s last 16 round
“That was an advantage for me today over the field being the local man on the course,” said Reilly
but they got faster and firmer as the day went on
The quarter finals of both the Irish Veteran Men’s Amateur Close Championship and the Irish Senior Women’s Amateur Close Plate have also been set with Fionnuala Halpin (Dun Laoghaire) taking on Pat Doran (Donabate) in the first of the women’s morning matches while the Shane Magee (Lurgan) versus Hugh Smyth (Mourne) match will be first off for the veterans

2025 at 0:42pm GMTOne of the oldest hotels on the island of Ireland has been put up for sale by its owner
the Kilmorey Arms in Kilkeel lists Winston Churchill and former US President Dwight D
The 24-bedroom listed hotel was bought out of administration in 2015 by publican Sam Hamilton and fish merchant Andrew Annett
The rescue deal came just months after the Kilmorey Arms closed in December 2014 with the loss of around 20 jobs
on the corner of Greencastle Street and Knockchree Avenue
was given a new lease of life under the new owners
with over £1 million invested in a refurbishment programme
It’s understood Mr Annett exited the business in 2021
with Sam Hamilton now listed as the sole owner
But the 77-year-old businessman is now planning to retire and is seeking a new owner for the business
Osborne King is marketing the hospitality business for sale as a going concern
but the property company’s listing states: “The hotel has been successfully operated by the vendor for the last decade and provides a solid trading performance
“The hotel is fitted to a high standard throughout following continuous refurbishment requiring negligible [capital expenditure] from a new owner

Philip Brown will look to lead the charge for Banbridge when they take on Kilkeel
Banbridge begin their quest for a first Kirk Cup success since 2019/20 when they host Kilkeel at Havelock Park
Having lost the last three Finals to rivals Lisnagarvey
it is the one competition that has evaded the side in recent seasons
The EYHL team have been out of action since November
a result that saw them win for a fourth game running
who will likely be the main threat for his side again
while youngsters Adam McKee and Max Nicholson are also set to feature
Kilkeel come into the tie in fine form themselves having won their last two outings and also have plenty of goal threat amid their ranks
with David Finlay and Jordan McCartan netting eight between them this campaign
Lisnagarvey begin their title defence with a home tie against Premier League side Instonians
Unbeaten in the competition in the last three seasons
the hosts come into the tie as heavy favourites against their Premier League opponents
Erroll Lutton’s side have been in blistering form this campaign
winning nine of their 10 League games and having already comfortably beaten Premier League leaders Cookstown 5-2 in the Anderson Cup
Instonians have had a solid start to life in the division following their recent relegation but come into Saturday’s game looking to end a poor run of form
the side have lost ground in the title race
despite Ben Palmer netting three in his last two games
Adam Louden’s side will be hoping to cause an upset and end their recent run
Pegasus and Ulster Elks go head-to-head for a third time this season as they contest their opening game of the Denman Shield
The tie sees a repeat of last season’s Final which saw Pegasus come out on top with a 2-1 win at Comber Road
it is the university side who have prevailed in the sides’ League meetings which saw a 3-3 draw in September followed by a 2-1 win for Elks at the beginning of December
a Katie McKee strike for Pegs wasn’t enough to seal a home win as goals from Lucy Craig and Shannon McNellis sealed victory for Joel Cathcart’s side and ended a run of five games without a win over their Belfast rivals
The home side are also out to end a run of six games without a win in normal time
last winning 1-0 away to Railway Union in October
“Fishing has always been in my blood
I could never see myself doing anything else,” Kilkeel-based fisherwoman Erin Chambers told Fishing News
With Brian Chambers – CEO of the Anglo-North Irish Fish Producers’ Organisation
and an eighth-generation fisherman – as a father
it’s perhaps no surprise to see Erin follow suit
I’d go to watch him come in – that was my favourite thing to do
I would spend the summer holidays going out with him and learning different things and how to work on the boat
The first summer I was old enough to work properly
I knew I didn’t want to get a job anywhere else – I wanted to go and work with him
“As soon as I’d completed that first summer with him
I knew that fishing was what I wanted to do
I knew fishing was going to be my career.”
is keen to develop a deeper understanding of the environment and the industry in which she works
but I would also love to go and experience other types of fishing
scallops and prawns – but I’d love to go on pelagic boats and experience different types of fishing.”
who was instrumental in setting up the North East Lobster Co-operative – a pioneering forerunner of the v-notching initiative
Erin is keen to learn not just about sustainable fishing
but to develop a deeper understanding of the environment in which she works
This means that when it comes to a typical day
Erin has to balance studying with fishing – along with working in other areas of the industry
“The more I got to go out fishing and see different environments and different marine life
the more I knew I wanted to learn about the science side of things
and then applied to study marine science at Ulster University
“I’ll be going into my third year in September
I’m learning about the science of the ocean
and then I’m getting to go out on the boat and see it come to life
but I come home on Fridays – and if the weather suits
Fishing out of Kilkeel on the Girl Beth N 312
it’s usually quite an early start to the day – around 5am or 6am
We go out and aim to haul a few hundred creels
“We’ll then bait the creels and shoot them again
but others it’s good – you’ve just got to take it as it is
we’ll also be v-notching any berried lobsters
You really get to see the value that the programme brings to the sustainability of lobsters.”
it’s time for Erin to benefit from her father’s long experience
“My goal is to become a skipper and own my own vessel
Dad is trying to train me up at the minute to take the boat on and skipper it myself
“He’s usually teaching me on the way back in as we’re finishing up
and then he’ll get me to drive the boat while standing alongside.”
Erin also gets to experience other areas of the industry
working in the factory and retail shop for Sea Source
the Kilkeel-based fishermen-owned co-operative for catching
Erin also works at Sea Source – a fishermen-owned co-operative which includes processing and retail fish sales
Sea Source is all about sustainable seafood
Customers love to know that I also fish and catch some of the local products.”

identify areas requiring conservation measures
and increase awareness among stakeholders regarding the ecological consequences of various gear types.”
