A fine strike from young midfielder David Watson had the visitors ahead before Danny Armstrong's second-half penalty extended the gap between the sides. St Johnstone's fourth loss in five league games leaves them eight points adrift of 10th place with three games to play - and six behind Ross County in 11th. "The fight continues," Valakari told BBC Scotland. "Other results give us a little lifeline and that's what we need to grab. "We could not perform well enough today. We knew against Kilmarnock, if you go 1-0 down, it will be difficult and I'm very disappointed in how we give away the first goal. "We are very honest with ourselves, it was not good enough how we defended in crucial moments. It doesn't matter who you play, you need to be better with that." Kilmarnock are now six points above the relegation play-off spot and, having won back-to-back games, will feel a lot more comfortable about their chances of staying up. It was Derek McInnes' side who made a fast start and midfielder Watson, who has only recently come back into the team, opened the scoring with a lashed, dipping finish from the edge of the box in the 12th minute. Uche Ikpeazu, the former Hearts striker, was making his first start of the season following injury and proved to be a handful for the Kilmarnock defenders, as he was in his first spell in Scotland. He rolled Stuart Findlay to set up Makenzie Kirk, only for the young striker to shoot wide before seeing his volley from a few yards out well saved by goalkeeper Kieran O'Hara. Ikpeazu kept causing trouble in the second half, glancing a header inches wide. However, referee Ian Snedden then trotted across to the VAR screen and awarded a penalty down the other end of the pitch. Rory McKenzie, on as a half-time sub for the visitors, was caught in the penalty box by Victor Griffith and Armstrong stepped up to squeeze his penalty under the legs of goalkeeper Andy Fisher. Subscribe to get all your St Johnstone news That is almost that for St Johnstone, but they will go down sticking to the principles of play that Simo Valakari has tried to install. They were beaten by a fine strike and a penalty - two little mistakes that were severely punished. The inclusion of Ikpeazu was the eyebrow raiser, finally returning from an injury picked up before the season even started. His signing, made by Craig Levein, was supposed to be a statement of intent, but unfortunately it has gone almost totally wrong. Try as he might, it just would not come off for him. It was not for lack of effort. He was bullying defenders, holding them off or winning headers, rolling them when they came too close. A bit of match sharpness and he might have been on the scoresheet and Saints fans might be left wondering what could have been. Winless in their past 12 away games, including 10 defeats, it was about time Kilmarnock turned up on the road. The 2-0 win over Motherwell at the start of April gave McInnes' side some confidence, as did the victory over Ross County last weekend. They turned up with that confidence, starting on the front foot and rarely letting up. The restoration of Watson to the midfield was long overdue and he repaid the confidence finally shown in him. St Johnstone manager Simo Valakari: "Disappointment, everyone is down, but we need to pick ourselves up. We have these three matches to grab something. "No time to feel sorry for ourselves. It's hard to pick yourself up, but we need to do it." Kilmarnock manager Derek McInnes: "The pitch is really difficult. We tried to play the conditions, take the anxiety out of it. Davie [Watson] has the quality to get on the road, a brilliant finish from the wee fella. "We knew the second goal didn't need to come, but ultimately you still want it. We were able to breathe easy, it put pressure on them and we stayed strong within our structure. It was a very mature, professional performance and the exact one that was needed." Home   Sport   Article Ben Brannan says balancing being on loan at Inverness Caledonian Thistle along with helping Kilmarnock win the Scottish Youth Cup has been beneficial for his development as a player The 18-year-old arrived on loan at Inverness in February from Killie and has played a big part in helping the club secure their League One status he was also captain of the Kilmarnock Under-18 team which won the Scottish Youth Cup last Wednesday when they defeated Dundee 2-0 at Hampden In addition earlier this week, he signed a new deal with Kilmarnock to keep him at the club until the end of next season Leading Kilmarnock to Scottish Youth Cup glory along with looking to help Inverness avoid relegation to League Two was a lot of responsibility to place on such young shoulders But Brannan says having the chance to impress with both clubs this season was something he relished and will hope it has made him a better player He said: “I feel both clubs have communicated really well which has made it easy for me “I have just been told what to do on certain days and I have done it The drive is a bit long between Kilmarnock and Inverness I went in and asked the manager if I could get a loan and to be honest I wasn’t expecting much interest But obviously Inverness came in and I was delighted I spoke to the manager Scott Kellacher and he told me that I would play every minute he kept his word as I did and I have really enjoyed it.” In total, Brannan played 11 matches for Inverness during his time on loan and he scored once, which was the opener in the 4-1 win against Stenhousemuir in March The teenager says it was a huge step-up playing senior football for the first time but feels he has grown mentally as a result “It hasn’t been about just learning things I think that I have become more mature too “You have to pick and choose your battles as I was up against grown men for the first time “So it has been about knowing when to stand off waiting patiently and choosing the right time It is about knowing when to look to get myself forward and showing what I can do.” Brannan had played four games in the last two weeks between Inverness and Kilmarnock he captained Kilmarnock to victory in a 2-0 win over Dundee in the Scottish Youth Cup at Hampden Park in Glasgow He said lifting a trophy at the national stadium was a dream come true especially with all the boys and all the first team and manager watching “We went out to try and press and winning the cup being up on the podium and lifting the trophy in front of the fans was a brilliant feeling “Walking out to Hampden and seeing everyone I knew in the seats was a nice feeling.” Brannan played his final game for Inverness on Saturday, defeating Montrose 2-0 at Links Park which saw the club finish the campaign in seventh place It has been a tough season for Inverness, with a 15-point deduction in October after going into administration Brannan says he was full of praise for his teammates at Inverness who have had to deal with the situation throughout the entire season He said for the club to avoid relegation with a 15-point deduction was an incredible accomplishment He was pleased that he could play his part in making that happen He said: “I only joined a couple of months ago so didn’t experience the full season to realise how harsh it has been on the boys they have not looked at this season as a problem they looked at it as motivation and just kept going.” Brannan says he will now look to take what he has learned at Inverness back to Kilmarnock and look to push forward with his football career keep pushing and hopefully I can impress at Kilmarnock.” Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player Kilmarnock picked up a crucial draw on the road as we defeated St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park on Saturday 3rd May David Watson and Danny Armstrong both grabbed goals to secure the 2-0 victory in an important post-split clash It was an unchanged XI named by Derek McInnes with Matty Kennedy replacing Ethan Brown on the bench being the only change to our 20-man matchday squad Josh McPake had a decent chance for Saints in the opening minutes as he took advantage of a slip from Danny Armstrong on the edge of the box before cutting inside and shooting from the edge of the box – it was blocked well before reaching Kieran O’Hara’s goal though Fraser Murray tried his luck from distance in the 6th minute – his long-range effort almost troubled Andy Fisher but he managed to control it the second time round to ensure Bobby Wales was unable to follow-up with a rebound David Watson fired Killie in front after 12 minutes with a fantastic strike from the edge of the box after great build-up play from the Ayrshire said Makenzie Kirk had a decent chance for Saints on 17 minutes as he was teed up by Uche Ikpeazu inside the area but Kirk’s shot was blocked by the ever-present Watson Stuart Findlay went close just before the half-hour mark with a header from a corner Kieran O’Hara pulled off a massive save after 34 minutes after an Ikpeazu shot from close range looked goalbound until the goalkeeper stopped it at point-blank range Defender Daniel Balodis had a go from distance in the 42nd minute but he couldn’t quite steer it on target Ikpeazu went close just after the break but he couldn’t direct his header on target Five minutes later Killie were awarded a penalty after a VAR check decided Rory McKenzie was fouled Danny Armstrong made no mistake from the spot as he calmly coverted from the spot to make it 2-0 Scottish FA Youth Cup FinalDundee 0-2 KilmarnockWednesday Dundee made four changes to their starting line-up from last time out against Inverness Caledonian Thistle Luca Perrie & Michael Hunter came into the fold Jack Barr dropped to the bench alongside Johnny Watson and Ryan Bland who were new additions to the squad since the previous fixture Only three players from Kilmarnock’s starting XI kept their place in the team since their last fixture against St Mirren Mitchell Spence & Grant Marchant were joined in their cup final starting eleven alongside the incoming Dylan Brown It was a bright evening at Hampden and as very typically seen in cup finals the game started as a cagey affair between both sides Chances were at a minimum in the opening stages with the only real opportunity coming from a long distance piledriver out of Kilmarnock’s defence however it was easily gathered by Warren Lyall in between the Dundee sticks and after a nice interchange of play through midfield a quick ball down the left found the feet of Cole Burke who jinxed down the side of the Dundee defence to drill a low cross in but was quickly intercepted out for a corner Killie capatalised on the momentum and fired themselves ahead on fourteen minutes A whipped in corner landed in Dundee’s 6-yard box and was tapped home by the outstretched leg of Duncan Barlow much to the elation of Killie’s loyal contingent in attendance the Dee began to regain spells of possession but struggled to cause major damage Charley Oosenbrugh’s lofted ball over the top looked like it could move into the stride of Luca Perrie but Kilmarnock’s number 1 Dylan Brown rushed out rapidly to avenge the danger It wasn’t long before Killie shifted it up a notch when playmaker Cole Burke jinxed by several in the Dundee backline to cut inside and aim a low strike towards the Dundee goal forcing a good save out for a corner by Lyall in between the sticks Burke looked in a fine mood and found himself with an opportunity at the edge of the 18-yard box from the resulting corner His high attempt towards the top left corner looked bound for the net but was tipped over the bar Dundee picked up their first corner in the 37th minute with the in swinging cross landing on the head of Leo Howett whose aerial effort sailed wide of the post Ethan Crombie played a delightful ball over Kilmarnock’s left side in search of that all-important equaliser at a crucial time in the game but the opportunity was snuffed out as Killie headed into the break one goal to the good Chris Burke’s side emerged from the dressing room with a great hunger to extend their lead an ambitious strike from range by Euan Bowie looked on its way to delivering on the hope of the Ayrshire side with just the outside of the post denying the Killie defender The Ayrshire side continued to probe and came inches close to doubling their lead on the 57th minute mark when a Grant Marchant cross was met by a strong header which nearly crept in off the ground towards the top corner but Lyall came up trumps once again with a fine save over the bar to keep his side in the game Burke was finding great joy down the left flank for Kilmarnock and came close once more after a run from deep into the box but his left-footed attempt turned to nothing much to the number 11’s despair Both teams had their fair share of possession throughout the early to middle period in the second half without causing a threat to either goal This was until we entered the final 15 minutes when Scott Douglas’ men went on the hunt of an equaliser through Hewitt’s fantastic long-range effort the danger was dealt with easily by Brown in between the Killie sticks Moments later Killie went up to the other end and extended their lead to 2-0 in the 77th minute when Reuben Cooper cut inside off the right flank and drove a wonderful strike home inside the ‘keepers near post The blue & white side from Ayrshire dictated the ball efficiently in the closing stages of the game at Hampden Park and they thought they had made it 3-0 just before the full-time whistle when a diving header hit the back of the net only to be denied by the linesman’s offside flag A late chopped off goal didn’t make any difference to the final outcome as Kilmarnock ran out 2-0 winners to claim the Scottish FA Youth Cup 24/25 trophy Want to advertise on this site? The visitors took the lead on 12 minutes when David Watson fired a fine effort from the edge of the area into the net. Saints had chances to get back into the game as Makenzie Kirk saw his effort deflected behind for a corner, before Uche Ikpeazu was denied from close range by Killie keeper Kieran O’Hara. Danny Armstrong then wrapped up the points from the penalty spot for the Ayrshire side on 53 minutes following a VAR check for a foul on Rory McKenzie by Victor Griffth. Today’s result coupled with Ross County losing 3-1 at home to Hearts means Saints remain six points behind the Dingwall side who they welcome to Perth next Saturday, kick off 3pm. It was a sunny afternoon in Perth as Graham Carey got the match underway for Saints. Josh McPake created the first chance of the match after 2 minutes as the winger did well to cut inside from the left away from Danny Armstrong before unleashing a low strike which was blocked by the Killie defence. The visitors got their first sight of goal on 6 minutes as Bruce Anderson played the ball to Fraser Murray but his strike from just outside the box was gathered at the second attempt by Andy Fisher. The breakthrough came on 12 minutes as Killie took the lead. Corrie Ndaba played the ball to David Watson on the edge of the box and the midfielder moved the ball onto his right foot before unleashing a strike that nestled in the corner of the net. PHOTO: Graham Carey is tackled by Corrie Ndaba Great play by Uche Ikpeazu on 17 minutes saw the forward hold off the Killie defence before sending a low ball across the face of the Kilmarnock goal, picking out Makenzie Kirk however, his shot on the turn was deflected behind for a corner by Watson. Graham Carey took the corner from the right and his delivery was met by Victor Griffith who put his header wide of the target. Another Carey corner 3 minutes later, this time from the left, picked out Ikpeazu and the forward saw his goal bound header cleared off the line by Ndaba. However, play was pulled back as Ikpeazu was deemed to have fouled Stuart Findlay as he got up to meet the corner. Killie came close to doubling their lead on 23 minutes as Murray broke down the left channel before sending over an inviting ball into the box, picking out Armstrong, however, the winger couldn’t make a clean connection with the ball as it went out for a throw-in. Saints created a great chance to level the match with 11 minutes of the first half remaining. A cross into the box from Elliot Watt was met by Kirk and the header from the forward saw the ball break to Ikpeazu who unleashed a side footed volley however, Killie keeper Kieran O’Hara came out to make a brilliant block. PHOTO: Uche Ikpeazu’s shot is saved by Kieran O’Hara Saints continued to press for the equaliser as the match headed towards half time. On 42 minutes Carey picked out Watt on the edge of the area however, his first time effort went wide of the target. Ikpeazu got two good chances at the start of the second half to pull Saints level. Firstly on 47 minutes the forward got on the end of a Carey cross however, he could direct his effort on target. Then 3 minutes later McPake sent over an inviting ball from the left however, he glanced his effort wide. Play was then stopped as there was a VAR check for a potential penalty for Kilmarnock after Rory McKenzie went down in the box under the challenge from Griffith. Referee Iain Snedden was called to review the incident on the monitor by VAR official Andrew Dallas before deciding to award the visitors the penalty. Armstrong stepped up to take it and he sent his effort low down the middle as it came off Fisher’s legs before landing in the net. Saints were awarded a free kick on 56 minutes after Ikpeazu was fouled by Robbie Deas. Both Watt and Carey stood over the free kick and it was taken by the latter as he curled his effort narrowly over. PHOTO: Danny Armstrong beats Andy Fisher from the penalty spot Saints then made a double change as Adama Sidibeh and Nicky Clark came on to replace Makenzie Kirk and Victor Griffith. There was another VAR check on 69 minutes as Sidibeh’s shot struck Findlay however, the penalty appeals were quickly dismissed following the check. Saints made another change on 79 minutes as Josh McPake made way for Fran Franczak. As the match entered the closing stages Saints continued to try and find a way back into the game. 5 minutes of additional time was added on at the end and in the second minute of stoppage time Sidibeh’s cross from the right was met by Ikpeazu however, his header was straight at O’Hara who comfortably gathered the ball as the Ayrshire side departed Perth with the points. Kilmarnock's Reuben Cooper: "It’s what you dream of as a kid – playing at Hampden it’ll be a special feeling and something that we’ve been looking forward to and hopefully we can make it a memorable one "We went for a tour of Hampden the other week which was good "There’s a few of the lads who were involved and we’ve been hurting and disappointed because you never want to lose a cup final you try to look at it in a positive way and you don’t want that feeling again Hopefully we can right the wrongs and get the job done tonight." champions for the first time since 2004 after a fantastic 2-0 win over Dundee at Hampden Park Goals from defender Duncan Barlow and winger Reuben Cooper were enough to get the job done on the big stage as Killie put in a composed and confident performance under the lights with captain Ben Brannan testing the Dundee keeper with a stinging effort from 25 yards just four minutes in The keeper managed to keep it out with his feet The breakthrough came in the 14th minute and it was Barlow rising highest to power home a header from a corner Cole Burke danced his way past a few defenders after a short corner before curling a beauty towards goal Euan Bowie almost produced something special just after the break his strike from distance flying inches wide combining nicely with Grant Marchant before his shot was blocked inside the box Dundee had a spell of pressure late on and came close when Leo Howett fired over from the edge of the area on 76 minutes – but just a minute later A wicked deflection off a Dundee defender wrong-footed the keeper and nestled into the bottom corner to make it 2-0 Cooper wasn’t done yet and nearly grabbed another soon after again cutting in from wide and getting a shot away that was well saved Archie Traynor then thought he had his Hampden moment as he headed into the net in stoppage-time but the linesman’s flag cut those celebrations short Kilmarnock travel to McDiarmid Park this Saturday for a huge post-split clash With the campaign edging towards its conclusion Derek McInnes’ side head to Perth knowing a victory could take them a huge step closer to securing top-flight survival – and for bottom-placed St Johnstone Killie come into this crunch clash on the back of two impressive home wins over Ross County and Motherwell McInnes praised the response from his side we’ve played against teams who are in the bottom 6 I thought we were the better team in both games but the response was what I would hope for and what I expect for the team.” Killie are looking to take that belief on the road – something McInnes knows will be essential if the club is to finish in a strong position “We’ve got two more home games and we’re strong at home,” he acknowledged “but for us to finish 7th or 8th in the league we’re going to have to pick up points on the road are in desperate need of points and will be throwing everything at this one I’d still feel we had a real chance,” said McInnes “I think they’ll come right after us They’ll see this as a real chance for them We’ve got to be ready to fight fire with fire.” Despite their position at the foot of the table Saints have proven they can pose problems for any team having already beaten Celtic at home this season McInnes is well aware of their threat: “This is a St Johnstone team that They’re capable of big moments in games… and they’ve got real attacking threats It’s something that we’ve got to be mindful of.” The Killie gaffer also acknowledged the psychological edge of a victory “A win would put us in a really strong position in terms of meeting objectives now,” he said “It would relieve a bit of anxiety about everybody at the club We can just look forward to the last few games.” And while the senior squad remains focused the feel-good factor around the club was boosted midweek as Kilmarnock’s Under-18s lifted the Scottish Youth Cup in front of a strong travelling support at Hampden “It was good to see so many Killie fans at the game and my first team squad turned up showing their support as well it was a good evening for everybody at Kilmarnock.” We are set to Cole Burke aims to follow in the footsteps of his father Scottish Youth Cup final: Kilmarnock v Dundee iPlayer and the BBC Sport website & app from 19:15 Not only is former Rangers winger Chris in charge of Kilmarnock for their first Scottish Youth Cup final since the club won it in 2004 his son Cole is one of the rising stars in the team "Obviously that's the elephant in the room Where you've got the head coach and your son playing for that team people could look at it in a challenging way," said the older Burke The player plays if he's good enough to play The one thing that I can complement the group on is the boys handle that really well because they could easily take it another way I would treat my son or somebody else the exact same way." Kilmarnock are up against Dundee in Wednesday's final The Dark Blues last reached the final in 1999 long before any player in the current side was even born When it comes to giving youngsters pathways to top level football Dundee were ranked first for giving young Scottish players minutes 'No consensus' about altering Premiership - SPFL While expanding the Premiership now seems to be off the SPFL agenda Dundee youth team manager Scott Robertson believes a larger top division would be beneficial to developing young Scottish players "I love the debate that was on regarding the structure and the expansion of the league to almost take away the worry of playing a young player where it might cost mistakes," he said "The expansion of the league I think would help with that It would take away that fear of putting somebody in and wondering if they're ready or not "It takes a brave manager to put young players in and put their faith in them and trust them But we've seen it across leagues this season with some really good young players coming through [Motherwell's] Lennon Miller is probably the prime example." The issue of youth development has become a hot topic in Scottish football of late The Scottish FA recently asserted that Scotland is not bringing through enough emerging talent By way of trying to help resolve the issue the governing body has introduced the 'Co-operation System' from next season which offers more flexibility in loaning players between 16 and 21 years old It will allow players eligible to play for the Scotland national teams to join a lower league club but maintain a connection with their parent club allowing for a transfer between clubs throughout the season Burke believes it is a step in the right direction we all try our best to try and give them the best opportunity possible and I think with the Co-operation loan next year "I've seen it so many times in my short academy coaching career that I can tell when a player's already past that 18s level You don't want them to become frustrated and then to plateau out you want to challenge them constantly and to do that you need to push them out and let them play the men's game as much as possible then I believe they will become a better player for that I'm really looking forward to next season when that kicks in." Killie recorded only their third away William Hill Premiership victory of the season and first since October thanks to a goal in either half from David Watson and Danny Armstrong. That was sufficient to take the Ayrshire men six points clear of 11th-placed Ross County with three games to play of a tough campaign. McInnes, who revealed striker Bobby Wales was likely to leave the club after links with Swansea, said: “I want to give the supporters highlights between now and the end of the season. “And this was a good day for them. We had a huge crowd coming up. A lot of them had been disappointed with a lot of away results this season. “We have been close and have merited more at times, but this was all about the win. “The supporters are going home happy and you could see the response at the end. “I am delighted. Up until last weekend, nobody could breathe easy in the bottom six. “There is so much to play for, and there is pressure and anxiety for the boys. “But that’s three 2-0 wins in the last four games, with the other one against Celtic away. “The form we have shown has been pleasing. We are keeping clean sheets again. This is the type of form I expect from us. “We didn’t need to be brilliant. But we did need to be responsible, mature, professional and that’s exactly what we were.” Bottom club St Johnstone missed another opportunity to place some pressure on Ross County above them. Simo Valakari’s men will now host County next Saturday needing a win to realistically remain in the William Hill Premiership survival hunt. Valakari said: “The fight continues because the other results mean we still have a lifeline. “It sounds crazy – and people outside will not believe it – but we need to believe in here. “It’s getting more and more difficult, and it’s more likely that next week is our last chance. “We’ll be playing against our direct opponents and there’s no other option but to win our next match. “Our problem has been that we haven’t been able to capitalise on other results. “Teams above us have been able to lose because we haven’t put pressure on them. “It’s all about us. Kilmarnock’s Under 18s sealed a date at Hampden after a convincing victory against Livingston in the Scottish Youth Cup semi-final. The Ayrshire side will face either St Mirren or Dundee at the National Stadium later this season as Chris Burke’s men secured their spot in style. They raced into a four-goal lead at half-time before completing the job in the second half. Reuben Cooper looked sure to open the scoring after just 3 minutes during a goalmouth scramble – but it somehow stayed out. Cooper then had another great chance as he curled an effort after 11 minutes – but this time it was the post that denied him. Cole Burke was next to have a chance as he latched on to a low cross in the 17th minute – but he couldn’t wrap his foot around the ball enough to get the shot on target. Cooper once again had a great chance after 20 minutes, this time a header, but Livingston goalkeeper Joe McQuire held well. Duncan Barlow fired Killie ahead after 24 minutes as his volley slammed into the ground and over McQuire. Then just two minutes later Ben Brannan doubled the lead as his free-kick was deflected into the bottom corner. Gabriel Erhabor had a decent chance for the visitors after half-hour, but Dylan Brown did well to tip the powerful shot over the crossbar. Archie Traynor capitalised on a rebounded effort before smashing home Killie’s third making it 3-0 after 34 minutes. Seconds later Cole Burke looked to make it four as he had a low shot – but it trickled narrowly wide. Erhabor had another chance just after the hour mark, again Brown was equal to the effort with a good save. Cole Burke made it five with 10 minutes left as he caught out McQuire to score from distance with a fine strike. Scorers: Duncan Barlow, Ben Brannan, Archie Traynor, Mitchell Spence, Cole Burke, Jack Allan Team: D. Brown, Brannan (Eaglesham 83’), Spence, Burgess, Barlow (Bowie 83’), Traynor, Davis, Cooper (McKeown 58’), Duruh (Gilmour 72’), Marchant (Allan 83’), Burke Saints four game winning run came to an end this afternoon as they lost 3-1 to Kilmarnock. The hosts started brightly and they took the lead on 9 minutes as Liam Polworth won possession on the edge of the area before chipping the ball over the onrushing Andy Fisher. Killie doubled their lead on 56 minutes when Fraser Murray curled home a free kick from 30 yards. The hosts then ended the game as a contest on the hour mark when Bobby Wales sent a composed finish beyond Fisher. Saints got a consolation in stoppage time when Graham Carey finished off a good passing move as he slotted home from six yards out. Saints return to action next Sunday when they welcome Hearts to McDiarmid Park, kick off 12pm. It was a chilly afternoon in Kilmarnock as Makenzie Kirk got the match underway for Saints. Simo Valakari’s side created their first chance of the match on 4 minutes as from an Elliot Watt corner the ball broke to Drey Wright however, his effort from distance went wide of the target. Killie took the lead on 9 minutes as Watt was caught on the edge of the area by Liam Polworth and the midfielder played a neat one-two with Bobby Wales before he chipped the ball over the advancing Andy Fisher. The hosts then went on to create chances to extend their lead as Saints were camped in their own half as they struggled to clear the ball and on 14 minutes Wales saw his shot on the turn go wide. Then 3 minutes later Robbie Deas cut the ball back to Kyle Magennis however, he couldn’t test Fisher with his effort. Saints were forced into a change on 23 minutes as Stephen Duke-McKenna came on to replace the injured Victor Griffith. The introduction of Duke-McKenna saw Saints change their shape and they started to come back more into the game. On 36 minutes a cross-field pass by Duke-McKenna played in Sam Curtis and he took a touch to control the ball before seeing his effort saved by Kieran O’Hara. A quick Saints counter-attack from a Killie free kick on 43 minutes saw Jonathan Svedberg break forward before playing in Kirk whose shot was saved by O’Hara. Then just before half time Killie came close to doubling their lead. Fraser Murray broke down the left channel before sending over an inviting cross into the Saints box which Marley Watkins got on the end of however, the winger saw his header hit the crossbar before going behind for a goal kick. PHOTO: Victor Griffith gets above Joe Wright Simo Valakari made a double change at half time as Taylor Steven and Zach Mitchell came on to replace Barry Douglas and Sam Curtis. Saints were out of the traps quickly in the second half and on 48 minutes Duke-McKenna showed some good feet to create space for himself down the left before sending over a cross into the Killie box which Kirk got on the end of however, he blasted his effort over. Then shortly after Duke-McKenna sent over another inviting ball from the left which Kirk was inches away from connecting with. On 52 minutes Saints were awarded a free kick after Steven was fouled by Deas. Watt took the free kick and his floated ball into the box was met by Daniels Balodis however, he couldn’t direct his effort on target. Play then quickly switched to the other end and on 55 minutes Fisher made a good save to deny Killie captain Brad Lyons. However, shortly after Killie doubled their lead. The hosts were awarded a free klick after Sven Sprangler had fouled Magennis. Murray stepped up to take the free kick and the midfielder curled his effort from 30 yards up and over the wall and into the bottom corner of the net. That goal prompted the Saints bench to make another change as Graham Carey came on to replace Elliot Watt. Despite this change Killie made it 3-0 on the hour mark. A long ball forward from Lewis Mayo played in Wales who did well to get between Daniels Balodis and Božo Mikulić to brilliantly bring the ball down before lashing it beyond Fisher and into the net. On 67 minutes good play by Carey saw the Irishman burst through the middle before picking out Kirk in the box who blasted his effort over. That would prove to be the Kirk’s last involvement in the action as he was then replaced by Adama Sidibeh. PHOTO: Stephen Duke-McKenna and Joe Wright Saints continued to plug away and on 85 minutes Svedberg played in Steven however, he dragged his effort wide. Then with 2 minutes remaining Saints got another sight of goal as Carey fired wide of the target. 3 minutes was added on at the end and in the first minute of added on time Saints pulled a goal back. A good passing move saw Carey play the ball into the feet of Sidibeh and the Gambian cut the ball back to Svedberg who then slipped in Carey, who had continued his run into the box, and the midfielder swept the ball home past O’Hara from six yards. Saints created one final chance as Wright picked out Duke-McKenna however, the on-loan attacking midfielder put his effort wide of the target as Killie comfortably saw out the final couple of minutes to secure the 3 points.   PHOTO: Graham Carey scores a consolation goal for Saints Kilmarnock: O’Hara, Ndaba, Wright, Mayo, Deas, Lyons, Murray (Kennedy 85’), Magennis (Watson 67’), Watkins (Cameron 85’), Wales (Anderson 80’), Polworth (Donnelly 85’) Unused Substitutes: McCrorie (GK), Wilson-Brown, Armstrong, Ramsay Scorers: Polworth (9’), Murray (56’), Wales (60’) Saints: Fisher, Mikulić, Balodis, Griffith (Duke-McKenna 23’), Svedberg, Wright, Sprangler, Kirk (Sidibeh 68’), Douglas (Steven 45’), Curtis (Mitchell 45’), Watt (Carey 57’) Unused Substitutes: Sinclair (GK), Holt, Clark, Franczak Picture: Johnathan Svedberg holds off Corrie Ndaba Official Celtic FC Website Enter now for your chance to be a winner Our exclusive 'SIGN FOR CELTIC' competitions with the chance to win some fantastic prizes Tickets for our trip to St Mirren on Saturday March 29th will be on sale to season ticket holders on Wednesday We have been allocated physical tickets for this match Please note that no tickets will be available before 10am on Wednesday Concessions: £17 (over 65 and Full time Student) Under 12 £6** must be bought with an adult ticket Tickets will go on sale to season ticket holders from Wednesday please ensure you have your season ticket reference code when purchasing Any remaining tickets will go on general sale from Wednesday If you are unable to collect your tickets from the ticket office please contact out ticketing team to assist you tickets@kilmarnockfc.co.uk     01563 545 311 Ticket Office Opening Hours Kilmarnock’s Under 18s picked up a point in their CAS Elite League clash against Queen’s Park. Jack Allan and Grant Marchant bagged the goals for Chris Burke’s side as they played out a draw with the Spiders. Grant Marchant looked sure to score after 8 minutes as the ball was laid off well to him, but it was well blocked by the visitors’ defence on the line. 4 minutes later Killie were ahead as Jack Allan opened the scoring with a powerful low drive from close range. Craig Watson – the younger brother of David – went close with a free-kick after 19 minutes, he couldn’t quite keep it down though as it flew narrowly over the crossbar. Queen’s Park equalised in the 34th minute as a low show crept past Michael Mullen in the Killie goal. Killie were then back in front after 68 minutes when Marchant latched on to a low ball across the goal as he fired home from a couple of yards out to restore the lead. Queen’s Park got themselves level late on as they grabbed an equaliser in the 89th minute. Rodgers demanded a response following the loss to the division's bottom side, and within 24 minutes his side were four ahead thanks to a stunning array of goals, with Daizen Maeda, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Reo Hatate, twice, on target. Danny Armstrong's cross sailed home for some brief respite for Derek McInnes' men, but the champions-elect utterly dominated. The icing on the cake arrived in injury time as substitute Anthony Ralston danced into the box and found the far corner. Celtic's title win will be confirmed if Aberdeen defeat Rangers on Sunday, while well-beaten Kilmarnock now head into a crucial bottom-six run that will determine their fate. "As frustrated as I was last week, that was a brilliant reaction," Rodgers told BBC Scotland. "The first 30 minutes were as good as we've been. "That's more like what we've been for large parts of the season. Winning attitude mixed with talent, you get that performance." Everything you need to know about Kilmarnock Rodgers had questioned the mindset of his squad after defeat last Sunday meant there was no home title party this weekend. With four changes for the home side, two up top and two at the back, the intent and desire was there instantly. Celtic were magnificent and swatted Kilmarnock away with some excellent goals. The first was an individual moment of brilliance as Hatate gathered off a one-two and, without hesitation, fired straight into the top corner with Kieran O'Hara given no hope in goal. Things quickly imploded for the visitors. Arne Engels waited and waited before playing a delightful ball in behind for Alistair Johnston, who squared for Maeda to tap in the easiest of his now 31 goals this season. Celtic's attacking was relentless and Carter-Vickers got in on the act as he strode freely towards the box and smashed a perfect long-range strike into the top corner. The fourth was wonderfully worked with James Forrest again releasing Johnston, who found Hatate with space and time to net his second of the game and 10th of the season. At that stage, Kilmarnock looked in freefall. From nowhere, Armstrong crossed with pace and it soared to the far post and over Viljami Sinisalo into the top corner. Fortunate but gratefully received. Celtic kept at it. Kilmarnock avoided further damage just before half-time when Maeda slammed home but Adam Idah was adjudged just offside. The only solace for the visitors was it didn't get much worse as they changed approach at the break to some effect. The damage was done. Engels was closest to a fifth with a curling effort that clipped the bar before Ralston's late strike as Celtic inflicted a painful, chastening afternoon on their opponents. No title party, just yet, and that clearly irked Rodgers given his comments in the past week. Clearly, his anger had the desired impact on his squad. Jota, Nicolas Kuhn, Auston Trusty and Jeffrey Schlupp all made way and Celtic were on it from minute one. It was a brilliant response as Kilmarnock were battered into submission within the opening quarter of the match. At half-time this really could have been a cricket score. Celtic eased off and a change in approach from Kilmarnock stemmed the flow but this was a convincing and deserved victory. Another Premiership title will arrive, whether on Sunday or later. However, clearly Celtic's manager is already thinking beyond the remainder of this season. He told BBC Scotland pre-match he will "150%" remain Celtic manager next season and his position on the next steps seems crystal clear. This squad needs improved despite yet more success being within their grasp. The fight really begins for Kilmarnock and every side in the bottom six now in the five post-split fixtures. The Rugby Park side have not won away to Celtic since 2012 and ending that run was always unlikely. Within 10 minutes it was a crisis management exercise in damage limitation. Kilmarnock barely had the ball, couldn't get away from their box and very rarely got over halfway. It was the sort of afternoon no footballer wants to experience, never mind fans. Goal difference may prove crucial - second-bottom Dundee are just a point behind before facing Hibernian on Sunday - and the second half game-management may prove helpful. You look at this Kilmarnock squad and think they should have enough to avoid trouble, but they are right in it as things stand. This was an afternoon they'll want to forget, regroup and get on with the job in hand. Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers: "I feel much much happier than I was last week. You see the response over a week's work and today. "It puts us in a perfect place going into the Scottish Cup semi-final [next week]. If we put in a performance like that, hopefully we can get to the final." Kilmarnock manager Derek McInnes: "Celtic started like a train and put us to the sword with their movement. When they are like that you think, 'how can they lose games in the Premiership?' "We've got to bounce back into work. Every bottom-six team is in a fight, we've got to make sure we win those fights. Today wasn't a fight we needed to win." substituted for Jota at 60 minutesNumber 49 Watkins Match OfficialsReferee: John BeatonVideo Assistant Referee: Gavin DuncanAssistant Referee 1: Daniel
