A new play area has been officially opened in Bogside Park
Kirklands and Barrie Place Tenants and Resident Association and local school children worked with our Community Partnership Team to develop the plans for the park
A total of £80,000 funding from the council’s Local Development Programme was allocated to upgrade the park
which includes a variety of play equipment including swings
pupils from Kilsyth and St Patrick’s Primary Schools and local elected members to officially open the new park
“This has been a great partnership project between the council and local residents
working together to design and create a fantastic new facility for Kilsyth,” said Councillor Woods
“It provides a fun environment for children of different ages
A design for the new park sign was chosen after a competition run by both school – winner Louise Carberry from Kilsyth Primary School and runner up Niamh Fury from St Patricks Primary School both received a gift voucher provided by the project contractor

A COUPLE were left stunned when a depression in their garden turned out to be a hidden 120-metre TUNNEL
The defunct mine shaft was discovered in Kilsyth, North Lanarkshire
A member of the residents' family later found that they had received a letter from the former Coal Authority concerning a mine entry inspection in the area
The report matched the location of the new ground movement
which was highlighted to the Mining Remediation Authority's public safety and subsidence team in April last year
An investigation discovered that the collapse of a disused coal mine shaft caused the depression in the couple's garden
It was also found that there was a huge 20-metre void under the ground and the tunnel was nearly 120 metres deep
Over three months, engineers filled the shaft with more than 1,700kg of resin.
The substance was injected into the tunnel through several carefully drilled boreholes.
Due to the sloping nature of the garden, a custom-built platform was built over the gardensite to allow the work to be completed safely.
and limited entry points in the residential area
with coal mining being the main source of employment during the early 19th century
project manager for the Mining Remediation Authority
said: "This was a challenging but rewarding project for a number of reasons
we were able to make the garden of the property safe for the couple living there and they have been extremely happy with the work we have done
"This is a family home that the couple have lived in for more than 40 years
so we also wanted to work with them to return their garden in good condition
"We re-laid the garden and rebuilt the patio using existing materials
Through close communication with the family and their neighbours to explain the scope of the work we needed to carry out
our teams and partners involved in the project really went above and beyond to make the garden safe."

who allegedly beat a dog to death in Kilsyth
appeared before the Ringwood Magistrates’ Court via video link on Tuesday for fear of a “security matter”
A heavy police presence and many community supporters
donning white clothing and some carrying Justice for Millie signs
lined the court’s hallways prior to the mention hearing on 29 April
The 39-year-old was charged with two counts of alleged animal cruelty after white Shih Tzu
and a golden retriever allegedly entered Martinaj’s property in Kilsyth on 3 December
The owners of the dogs later claimed that CCTV footage from their house showed Martinaj beat Millie to death with a steel pole
while the golden retriever was able to escape
the owners of Millie and their family lined the front rows
Martinaj engaged a lawyer just two to three days prior to the hearing
with a Mr Thomas representing him also via video
Mr Thomas said he was prepared to “progress to a contest mention”
A suppression order was also filed on Tuesday morning by the accused’s lawyers in an attempt to keep his name and identity out of the media
understanding the little preparation time for the defence and to review the suppression order request
adjourned the contest mention and suppression order application to Friday 2 May
Mr Thomas made a request of the judge that his client
This was denied by the judge who said “all parties should be physically present”
Mr Thomas said the request was an extension of an email sent by the accused to the judge because it was a “security matter”
there were scoffs and laughs from the courtroom crowd
Martinaj’s bail was extended to Friday when he would appear before the court
the crowd stayed to offer words of support and hugs to Millie’s owners and family
with polling booths opening at 8am and a day full of democracy ahead
Kilsyth Primary School had been turned into a battleground
littered with signs from representatives of both the Casey and Deakin electorates
with voters from both allowed to join the local line at this polling booth
Most voters were tight-lipped about what issues and initiatives were driving their vote but a few gave their thoughts:
Viv from the Casey electorate said she was most focused on green energy initiatives
especially any that help with the cost of living and was also disappointed that parties hadn’t campaigned strongly on taking action to prevent violence against women
One anonymous voter said she didn’t know who she wanted to vote for
but did like the Liberal Party’s policy to allow first home buyers to claim a tax deduction for the interest payments on the first $650,000 for the first five years of their mortgage
as well as access their super to help put down a deposit on a home
she still felt all politicians are ‘much for muchness’
Another anonymous voter said he wanted to see politicians take a pay cut and that he felt that was ‘one thing they all vote against’
the most important people on election day weren’t those on the ballot paper but the hardworking volunteers on the barbecue dishing out democracy sausages
Amy and Adam were hard at work in the morning ensuring local voters didn’t leave hungry
The fence line had been taken over by signs spruiking Deakin independent candidate Jess Ness and Liberal candidate Michael Sukkar while Casey independent candidate Claire Ferres Miles and Labor candidate Naomi Oakley also featured
Casey Greens candidate Dr Merran Blair had a couple of signs while the faces Deakin Labor candidate Matt Gregg and One Nation Senate candidate Wayne Pickering could also be found
the Labor party and the Liberal Party also had signs displaying general support for their party
there were plenty of coloured shirts of political volunteers
Volunteers for independent for Casey Claire Ferres Miles and for the Liberal Party were the most prevalent
with multiple teal and blue shirts handing out hand to vote cards
The Labor Party was represented by a pair of volunteers and there was a single volunteer holding down the fort for the Greens

A pair of “deliberate, coordinated, and highly dangerous” arson attacks causing over $25 million in damage in Kilsyth and Bayswater remain under investigation.
Knox Crime Investigation Unit detectives are now appealing for information on the two deliberately lit factory fires.
Detective inspector Glen Cruse told media on Wednesday the police believe the two attacks are connected.
“We’re confident the fires are linked because of the methodology of the offending, the timing of the morning, the proximity of timing between the fires, the fact that there’s familial links between the businesses,” the detective inspector said.
The first fire occurred at Paramount Blinds on Melrich Road, Bayswater, and the second at Dollar Curtains and Blinds on Canterbury Road, Kilsyth.
The fires occurred just over a week apart, at 4am on 23 December 2024 and 3am on 1 January 2025.
“In both incidents, it is believed a group of unknown male offenders gained access to the premises, brought petrol inside, and deliberately set the buildings alight,” Detective inspector Cruse said.
As part of the ongoing investigation, police are seeking any information from the public on the four vehicles that were seen around the time of the attacks. These are:
A blue, 2012 Toyota Camry sedan seen travelling inbound on Eastlink at approximately 3.30am and captured on CCTV at the Bayswater premises on 23 December. It was later seen on Mountain Highway in Bayswater. Found by police on 17 January, it had been abandoned for three days in Jubilee Park, Frankston.
A white, 2017 Mitsubishi Eclipse wagon captured on CCTV at 3am at the Kilsyth factory on 1 January. It was found burnt out on Deals Road, Clayton South on 29 January.
A white, 2016 Toyota Prado four-wheel drive captured on CCTV at 3am at the Kilsyth factory on 1 January. Found burnt out at Greaves Reserve, Dandenong on 3 January.
An “older model white van” seen entering the Greaves Reserve with the 2016 Toyota Prado.
Detective inspector Cruse said as well as the costs of these fires, many employees have been impacted and people could have been killed.
“It’s not just the owners that are affected by the fires,” he said.
“There’s over 100 employees that are employed between both businesses that are affected”.
“There is a deliberate disregard for the safety of anyone that may have been located within those factories”.
If you have information on these attacks, contact the Knox Crime Investigation Unit on (03) 9881 7999.

It’s set to be a fresh start for both Kilsyth’s senior men’s and women’s sides in 2025 following a finals appearance and a sixth-placed finish respectively last year
the Cougars senior men’s side fell in the elimination final to eventual runners up Whitehorse last season
There’s been some change for the senior men’s side
with Simon Caldwell moving from coach to president and being replaced at the helm by Damian Murray
Murray comes across having spent the past couple of seasons at Bayswater and East Burwood
gaining experience as a playing assistant coach at both clubs
The Cougars new playing coach says he’s enjoyed moving into the new role and has gained help in the form of Caldwell
“Without him there I’d probably have to find my feet a bit more,” Murray said
“The fact that Simon’s stayed involved and done a handover it’s been much easier on me getting the intel on not only the boys
It’s been a positive start to the preseason so far for the Cougars
with Murray saying the group is looking to improve following their early finals exit last year
“Like most groups they all say they want to do better
they want a premiership and stuff like that
that’s the difference between it at the end of the year.”
Majority of last year’s team has re-signed whilst there’s been a couple of additions to the side along with Murray himself
Among those inclusions is AFL Outer East duo Max Le Fevre and Trent Elliott
with Le Fevre joining from Wandin and Elliott from Warburton Millgrove
The Basin duo Liam Walter and Jackson Drake have also joined the club
with Drake looking to return to the footy field having not played since 2023 due to a leg injury
“They’ve all ticked the boxes and done what they’ve needed to do
“Some of them are coming from that higher standard of footy so from my end my expectation is that they perform
they lead at that level they’ve come from and they help these boys (improve) from day one.”
Kilsyth’s recruits have helped lift the standard of its current crop
with players such as Jacob Moschetti putting in the hard yards and impressing Murray
those boys have been putting in the work as well.”
And with the side already putting in the hard yards
Murray says they’ll need to continue doing so throughout this season
“(Division Four) is a genuinely tough division now where every win matters
This year is going to be a harder year to win (the premiership) than any other.”
“You can talk all you want but at the end of the day the actions have got to line up with what your goal is and what you want to achieve.”
Meanwhile Kilsyth’s women’s side will also be looking to improve this season following a four win season in their return to Division 2 last season
They too will have a fresh face at the helm
with former Seville coach Daniel Ismail replacing Quinten Van Veen
Ismail says that it’s been a “breath of fresh air” joining the Cougars and is excited about a new challenge
I’ve got a really good bunch of girls that are coming to training at the moment,” Ismail said
Being a welcoming and inclusive group has been a major theme for Ismail throughout the preseason so far
“It’s about making sure every time we finish a drill everyone gets a high five or if someone’s last doing a couple of laps you’re all waiting
not just having your drink and chatting amongst yourselves
“That’s one big thing I’ve learnt out of coaching is if you’ve got an inclusive side and a very welcoming side success usually isn’t far around the corner
There’s also been a focus on improving the group's skills and its fitness this preseason according to Ismail
“When I first saw them just before Christmas
there were girls who couldn’t run a full lap
And now they’re running full laps and they’ve got a bit of pace behind them.”
Abbey Bentley and Chloe Manelopoulos have been announced as re-signings
with Shae Dale the only major out from last year’s side
“We’ve (also) had a few players that have never played before and we’ve had a few that’ve come down from other clubs.”
Overall the main expectation for Ismail in his first year as Kilsyth’s coach is for each player to enjoy pulling on the red and black guernsey
“You’re always going to have a successful year
as long as the girls have a good mindset.”

North Lanarkshire Council has u-turned on plans to permanently close 39 venues in bid to save £64m over next three years.
The Labour-run local authority announced on Thursday that dozens of venues previously earmarked for closure would shut their doors permanently over the next two years.
Five of North Lanarkshire’s eight swimming pools were among the facilities due to shut.
Kilsyth Swimming Pool, the Sir Matt Busby Sports Complex in Bellshill, John Smith Pool in Airdrie, Shotts Leisure Centre and Aquatec in Motherwell were all affected by the cuts.
Local authority bosses said they were facing “tough decisions”, following the publication of a report into the condition of venues, usage, footfall, and the money expected to maintain them in the coming years.
But on Tuesday, a statement from council leader Jim Logue, issued by the Scottish Labour Party, said the local authority would rescind its previous decision and protect culture and leisure facilities.
Logue said: “We have taken the decision to protect these important community assets, despite a total lack of support from the Scottish Government to do so.
“The SNP has refused to offer a single penny more to support these facilities despite receiving £6 million to support swimming pools from the UK Government.
“North Lanarkshire Labour will protect these important facilities for the duration of this council term.
“However, our financial situation remains dire after more than a decade of cuts to our budget from the SNP in Holyrood, but Labour will always stand up for families here.
“It remains the case that North Lanarkshire Council will face difficult budget decisions as a result of failure of the SNP to properly resource local government.”
Previously, the Scottish Government said it was for “democratically-elected councils” to make decisions on the priorities for their local areas and consider how facilities are used.
“While Scotland is facing the most challenging budget settlement since devolution due to ongoing UK Government austerity, this year North Lanarkshire Council will receive £779.7m to fund local services – which equates to an extra £25.4m on last year,” a spokesperson said.
“Work is also ongoing with COSLA to establish a new fiscal framework for councils through the Verity House Agreement, a landmark agreement that is forging a stronger partnership between the Scottish Government and local councils through the spirit of collaboration and engagement.”
Mum says mould problem is affecting her children's health.
a single mother whose family home is slowly being destroyed by damp and mould
No matter what she does – from having every window and door open
to scrubbing the walls with bleach every day – nothing prevents thick black spores from popping up
“It’s coming through the carpets or flooring
chest of drawers,” she tells STV’s Scotland Tonight
“The dampness seeps through so I’m having to peel wallpaper off or repaint it
And I feel bad because my kids are asking ‘mum
but I don’t see the point because it’s all getting destroyed.”
Louise is so scared about the impact both her cleaning and the mould could have on her family that her two youngest children
“They’re breathing it in on a daily basis anyway
“They’re not sleeping in the bedrooms because of it
My 11-year-old is suffering health problems through asthma – so I’m not going to put my kids through that
The only place that seems safe is the living room
The family have spent almost £8,000 of their own money trying to fix the problem at their council home in Kilsyth
“That might not seem a lot to other people
“When I’m a single parent with three children
I’ve not got the money to keep replacing
Figures from charity Shelter Scotland show that almost one in ten houses in Scotland is suffering from dampness or condensation
And more than 50,000 homes have an issue with rising or penetrating damp
doctors warn that long-term exposure to damp and mould can have serious repercussions for health
“It can be fatal if you are exposed to heavy levels of mould over a long period of time
And it I guess the saddest reality is that this is an issue that’s facing many people across Scotland in 2023,” Dr Punam Krishan
these spores then fly off and can launch into our airways and our lungs
people will have symptoms that can range from things like irritated eyes – itching
runny eyes – to congestion of the sinuses
“But if you have underlying health conditions
living in sub-standard housing can also have a significant affect on mental health
with Dr Krishan now seeing a significant number of patients who can’t sleep due to stress
it’s almost inhumane to live in some of the conditions I’ve seen
It’s just such an awful way of living.”
Last year, an inquest into the death of two-year-old Awaab Ishak in Rochdale was directly linked to his exposure to mould
A post-mortem showed evidence of fungus in the toddler’s lungs and blood
and Dr Krishan is worried something similar could happen here
“It concerns me that this is even an issue that’s on the table,” she says
“But I feel that if we carry on just ignoring the plight of these people
it’s going to cause another tragedy and it doesn’t really need to get to that.”
North Lanarkshire Council said repairs had been delayed because workers were denied access to Louise’s home
But she said they had turned up without advance notice at times she was unavailable
The council spokesperson said: “We have carried out extensive works over the past four years to try and resolve underlying damp issues affecting Ms Coyle’s home
“Repairs have been delayed on a number of occasions as the tenant has not allowed our contractors access to the property
It is important tenants allow us access to complete repairs to avoid the issue getting worse
further repair work has been arranged and will be completed as a matter of urgency with new cavity wall insulation also scheduled to installed
“The health and wellbeing of tenants is our priority
damp and mould issues as quickly as possible.”

Emergency crews were called to the scene on Coach Place, South Barrwood Road, at around 1.55am on March 25.

Their conditions are currently unknown, and an investigation is under way.
Police Scotland confirmed on Wednesday that a 31-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the incident.
He appeared at Airdrie Sheriff Court on Wednesday, March 29.
A spokesperson for the force said: “A 31-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with a disturbance in Coach Place, South Barrwood Road, Kilsyth on Saturday, March 25.
“He is due to appear at Airdrie Sheriff Court on Wednesday, March 29. A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.
North Lanarkshire Council goes ahead with plans to permanently close 39 venues in bid to save £64m over next three years.
The Labour-run local authority announced on Thursday that 39 venues previously earmarked for closure will shut their doors permanently over the next two years.
Five of North Lanarkshire’s eight swimming pools are among the facilities that will shut.
Kilsyth Swimming Pool, the Sir Matt Busby Sports Complex in Bellshill, John Smith Pool in Airdrie, Shotts Leisure Centre and Aquatec in Motherwell are all affected by the cuts.
Local authority bosses say they’re facing “tough decisions”, following the publication of a report into the condition of venues, usage, footfall, and the money expected to maintain them in the coming years.
Earlier this week, members of Bellshill Sharks Amateur Swimming Club protested against the planned closures.
They have recently been training outside in the cold, instead of being in the pool at the town’s Sir Matt Busby Sport Complex.
They’re now worried they might soon have nowhere to train at all.
Logan Moffitt, a 13-year-old club swimmer, said he was “devastated” when he heard the council’s plan to close the facility.
He told STV News: “I am currently working towards qualifying times for SNAGs [the National Age Group Championships] 2024 and now I don’t know what the future of my swimming will look like if this centre closes. It would be a major blow for my club and all my friends I train with.
“My brother’s name is Callum and he is eight-years-old. He is one of the youngest members of the club and I feel really sad about the prospect of him not being fortunate to have the same experiences that I have had being part of a swimming club.”
A petition has since been launched – backed by students, parents and the wider community.
Euan Lowe, CEO of Scottish Swimming, said: “We understand that there are ageing pools in Scotland and the condition of some venues is a concern however it would be devastating for the safety, health and social fabric of the country if community pools close before building is under way or plans are in place for new pools.
“As an island nation it is paramount that every child should have access to swimming and our main priority is ensuring access to water is available, accessible and affordable so that everyone can swim.”
Also impacted by the council’s impending decision is the Wado Karate Central club at Holytown Community Centre.
Chief instructor Charlie Lindsay said it will have a hugely detrimental impact on young sporting talent:
He said: “In the past 50 years the club has produced in this community centre we have produced Scottish, British and European champions.
“It would be such a devastating loss for those people because there is nowhere else in the area for them to train.”
Brandon Forrester, who represents Scotland in karate at international level competitions all over Europe, said: “This club really helped me and made me so much better. All the other options for other karate clubs were very, very far away.”
Councillors will consider a report reviewing the future of the sites earmarked for closure tomorrow – and say they’re facing “extremely difficult decisions.”
Councillor Jim Logue, leader of North Lanarkshire Council, said: “Making decisions on the future of community facilities has been overwhelmingly difficult.
“After considering the comprehensive review which recognised usage and condition, as well as the amount of money which would be needed to modernise older facilities, the simple fact remains that the council just does not have the money to maintain all these facilities in a sustainable way.
“Our immediate priority is to engage with users of facilities to identify suitable alternative venues for activities and bookings where possible, while a phased closure is carried out. This will take some time, and we will update users of facilities throughout.
“For years we have warned that insufficient funding from the Scottish Government will see local councils struggle to deliver services that are hugely valued by local people.
“The council needs to save £64m over the next three years and that means having to make quite painful decisions about community facilities in order to protect services in the face of the most pressing budget cuts.
“Although the council is continuing with a hugely ambitious investment programme, which will see some community, leisure and library facilities replaced within new community hubs, the reality is that we need to meet the needs of people across North Lanarkshire in a way that sees services delivered through an overall reduced estate.”
A Scottish Government spokesperson said: “It is for democratically-elected councils to make decisions on the priorities for their local areas and consider how facilities are used.
“While Scotland is facing the most challenging budget settlement since devolution due to ongoing UK Government austerity, this year North Lanarkshire Council will receive £779.7m to fund local services – which equates to an extra £25.4m on last year.

Faux-plants and trees hung from the ceiling
and it felt like we were eating in an enchanted forest
allowing for both private dining or a fun night out
The food is of a really great quality and the portion sizes are nothing to sniff at
My eyes popped a little on seeing that a pint of soda water and lime costs £2.80
but it cannot be denied that The Coachman offers great food
