Food safety inspectors found 'dirty and unhygienic' conditions
and three mice when they visited a well-known Black Country dining pub
The Cottage Inn in High Street, Kingswinford, was ordered to close immediately when Dudley Council's food safety inspectors visited following a complaint
The pub is praised for its food in the Campaign for Real Ale's Good Beer Guide
a director of Cottage 2021 Ltd which operates the pub
admitted six offences under Food Safety and Hygiene (England) Regulations when he appeared before Dudley Magistrates Court
when he appeared before the court last week
2023 after receiving a complaint about a mouse at the pub
and ordered it to close immediately after finding three dead mice
The health inspector's report said: "A dead mouse was found on the floor beneath the sink unit in the kitchen and two dead mice were found in the boiler/pipe room located on the ground floor adjacent the seating area."
There were also 'fresh' mouse droppings found in the kitchen behind the fridges and freezers
The inspector also noted open food containers which 'may have been contaminated'
The restaurant's records said pest checks were done every day
but the inspector found this to "not be implemented"
Records also stated that kitchen surfaces and equipment was kept clean
but the inspector found there to be 'several' areas that needed disinfecting
including the cooking range which had become "encrusted" with burnt grease and debris
as well as a green chopping board which was so heavily scored that it 'could not be maintained in a clean condition'
The inspector noted 'several holes' that needed filling to prevent mice from coming in through the stairs
A spokesman for Dudley Council said: "During the inspection the council found dirty and unhygienic conditions
and poor food safety training in place for staff
The premises had also not been correctly registered for the preparation and distribution of food."
The Cottage was allowed to reopen in December 2023 following two weeks of supervision by the council's food safety team
The Cottage is included in the Campaign for Real Ale's 2025 Good Beer Guide
which praises it for its food and welcoming atmosphere
It describes the Cottage as a 'comfortable pub set on two levels serving a good menu including lunchtime specials,' adding that 'a carvery on Sunday also supplies meat for delicious sandwiches and cobs'
The guide says the pub offers a selection of changing beers and a range of country wines
"The frontage would not look out of place on a postcard and the interior is homely and inviting," it adds
cabinet member for public health at Dudley Council
said after the sentencing: “This case serves a reminder that we will not hesitate to act against people who are not facing up to their responsibilities when it comes to preparing and selling food
“I welcome the findings of the court and would like to thank the council officers who were involved in bringing this matter before the courts.”
Plans to demolish former offices in Kingswinford and build a new care home have been revived
Torsion Care has revealed plans to build a 73-bed care home on the site of Hampshire House in High Street, Kingswinford
The long-empty offices on the overgrown site would be demolished to make way for the new care home – which also includes a cafe and salon
Previous plans for the site have included new homes and a care home which resulted in objections from neighbours over the potential loss of privacy and overlooking as well as parking problems due to the lack of included spaces
A total of 23 parking spaces have been included in the most recent application by Torsion Care
A statement included with the application by the Leeds-based care home provider said: “The proposed development of the existing site represents an ideal opportunity to meet the growing care needs of those living in the Kingswinford area
“Our proposed development provides a sustainable building design to meet the operational needs of a modern care facility
it will help bridge the under-supply of a significant shortfall of fit-for future beds
and it can provide 75 jobs to the local community.”
Hampshire House has been the subject of several planning applications for homes and a smaller care home in recent years but the building still remains in place with no work carried out
Churchill Retirement Living scrapped plans in 2023 to build 47 flats and three cottages for the over 60s on the site more than six months after putting the application forward
Concerns had been raised by planners at Dudley Council about the size of the building and the lack of car parking spaces
A separate application to build 31 homes on the land in Kingswinford was approved by Dudley Council in 2022 but never built
Churchill Retirement Living had its plan to build a care home and new play area on the site of the former youth centre on the opposite side of Kingswinford High Street rejected by Dudley Council at the start of the year
Kingswinford and South Staffordshire MP Mike Wood has spoken in parliament about the government's plans to make it easier for developers to build Battery Energy Storage sites on greenbelt land
He is concerned about the safety of Lithium-ion battery after a fire at a solar farm near Cirencester earlier this month affected containers containing them
It is thought at least three similar fires have occurred recently at similar Battery Energy Storage Sites across the country in recent months and one in the world's largest facility in California in January forced a mass evacuation of residents in the immediate area
he said: "I’m really concerned about the safety of proposed Battery Energy Storage Sites following a string of fires in recent months
"It is so important that local people’s voices are heard when it comes to building on our greenbelt
and I know my constituents are understandably worried when these sites are constructed near their homes
this government's proposed reforms to the planning system will make it even easier for developers
some of which have never even set foot in South Staffordshire before
Planning applications for at least seven Battery Energy Storage Sites have been submitted for approval across Mr Wood’s constituency at sites in Lower Penn
A Kingswinford man took his own life by hanging himself in an out building at the property he owned despite there being no concerns he'd harm himself
A Kingswinford man died from suicide by hanging himself in an out building at the property he owned
Black Country Area coroner Joannne Lees reached the verdict on Andrew Reid
who was found hanging in the building in the garden of his home at Oak Street on the evening of March 11
The court heard the family of Mr Reid
alerted police when they had not heard from him for four days
Officers found the front, side and back doors of the property locked and when they went to try the out building
found it locked from the inside and they had to force the door open
They found him hanging from a beam with a rope around his neck
glasses and half a mug of tea in front of him
The coroner said: "He had a historic background of depression since 2005 and he was on Mirtazapine tablets but there was no concern around him harming himself - there was no history of such behaviour or of him using drink and drugs excessively
"His brother had spoken to him the previous Friday and had no concerns
but a family member alerted police when they hadn't heard from him within four days."
She said there was no note left and was satisfied there was an element of pre-planning with all the doors to the property locked as well - the evidence led her to a verdict of suicide

An award-winning family firm is targeting more than one million sales of its eco-friendly cleaning products over the coming year – as it looks to secure investment for further growth
Kingswinford-based Composty says demand has been soaring for its range of fully compostable cleaning products as consumers turn to more sustainable items
Matt Guest – who founded the company with wife Helen four years ago – says his long-term ambition is to build the business into a £10million concern
Former teacher Matt, who gave up the classroom to concentrate on the business, recently won a pitching competition at the West Midlands Business Funding Summit, organised by Oxford Innovation Advice
He said: “I was up against three other businesses and won a package of business support worth £3,000 after impressing the judges with my vision for Composty
“In the four years since we launched we have sold around 500,000 of our compostable cleaning sponges
but such is the demand that we are targeting sales of one million in the next 12 months alone
“The average sponge can take 500 years to degrade in a landfill site whilst ours can compost within three months
And one single plastic sponge – like you use for washing the dishes – can release 6.5million microplastic fibres into our waterways
“Recent research has shown how these forever plastics can end up inside the human body and even the brain
“Consumers are increasingly turning away from products which are not environmentally responsible
and I think there is real potential for the business to become a £10million concern in the years to come
“We are currently seeking investment to help us scale up and grow the business to meet some of this demand.”
Matt said the idea for the business came when the couple had a daughter in 2016 and wanted to start living more sustainably
It was launched during lockdown and has since generated £0.5million in sales
Matt added: “Our hero product is a magic pop-up sponge which is currently the best rated of its kind on Amazon
and our loofah scourer sponge was named best eco sponge and best plastic-free sponge by the Good Housekeeping Institute last year
so we know we are on the right lines and demand is there.”
managing director of Oxford Innovation Advice
said: “Matt impressed both our panel of judges and everyone in attendance with his passion
vision and business sense at our pitching competition.“
Composty is ideally placed to take advantage of a growing and important market and I wish Matt and Helen every success as they continue to grow the business.”

A Roman coin believed to be unique to the British Isles and found by a man with a metal detector is set to fetch thousands of pounds when it goes up for auction
The gold Roman coin, which is of the emperor Aulus Vitellius and is believed to have been crafted in AD69, will be the centrepiece of the Specialist Coin auction at Fieldings Auctioneers in Stourbridge on March 27
The coin was discovered by a metal detectorist in Kingswinford in May 2024 and after being sent to the British Museum
senior valuer and auctioneer and coin specialist at Fieldings
Mr Hannam said he was a keen metal detectorist himself and said the coin was a genuinely amazing find
He said: "To find a coin from AD69 is incredibly rare as most coins we find in this country are from the third and fourth century and we are talking about a time when the gold was its purest level
he was quite a glutenous emperor and it was a tumultuous time
with lots of villainy and debauchery and murder going on
"It's got everything going for it and it's fantastic for the area we live for it to have come from here
so it's a really important thing to have here."
The coin is set to go up for auction on March 27 and is expected to go for between £3,000 and £6,000
Mr Hannam said it was exciting for him as a coin specialist to be able to have something like this coin at Fieldings and said that it was a unique piece of history that he hoped would stay within the region
He said: "I think it is a one-of-a-kind piece of history which is unique and 100 per cent genuine and is still in great condition
it's all about the story of the time and of the emperor and I think it would grace anyone's collection of Roman coins and which I would love to use in lectures
"It's a coin I would use with my groups to talk about the Roman invasion and the influence on the Midlands
so I hope it will stay in private hands and hopefully we'll secure a great price for the vendor."

There has been no expense spared for the refurbishment of a popular Kingswinford Indian restaurant to give it a fresh new look and provide a five-star experience for customers
Robby's Indian Dining has undergone a massive change in look and décor since closing on January 27
with more than £90,000 spent on the refurbishment of the restaurant
The interior has been completely changed, with director Mohammed Siddique saying it was about bringing a change to a restaurant which he said was known for excellent food, but was feeling very dated

chucking away a lot of things from the curtains to the carpets and the utensils and bringing in a lot of brand new things
A Black Country council leader has pledged that no housing will be built on green belt land as he revealed the council's plans for 10,500 new homes over the next 16 years
Councillor Patrick Harley, leader of Dudley Council
said 97 per cent of the housing proposed in the borough's local plan would be built on brownfield land
which is 700 short of the housing target set by the Government
Local Government and Communities Secretary Angela Rayner
But Councillor Harley said he was confident the plan would be adopted following a precedent set in Wirral, where the Government this month accepted a 'brownfield only' plan
despite it being 3,000 homes short of targets
Wirral is believed to be the first council in the country to get a blueprint approved using a brownfield-only approach to house building
If approved, the plan will give comfort to people living in areas of Kingswinford and Wall Heath which had previously been identified as under threat
Councillor Harley said the news of the Wirral Plan was hugely important
“It shows that a brownfield-first approach
which protects the green belt from development
can pass the litmus test with the Secretary of State and get over the line
“It has been approved despite being nearly 3,000 short of the government’s recommended figure for the amount of houses being built there
“Ours is nowhere near that – we are only around 700 short
will get the green light from the government
It will allow us to deliver on our promises to do all we can to protect the borough’s green spaces from developers.”
It is expected that hearings to consider the plan will take place in the summer
with a decision expected towards the end of the year
It lays out plans to build 10,470 homes by 2041
with 97 per cent on brownfield sites and three per cent on greenfield
There is no proposed release of green belt – which makes up just over 18 per cent of land in the borough - to meet the demand
