A Fife church has unveiled ambitious plans to transform its building into a modern community hub
Hope Church in Kirkcaldy wants to upgrade its facilities to make them more accessible and welcoming to a wide variety of different groups
Parish minister Rev Josh Milton said the £2.4 million refurbishment project to create a centre for mission fit for the 21st century is a response to "genuine need"
Hope Church was created following the merger of Templehall and Torbain Parish Churches in February 2021 and uses the former Torbain building on Carron Place
is at a critical juncture where extensive refurbishment is essential to meet the needs of our expanding ministries and comply with current Scottish and UK government regulations
"Our project aims to transform our 1960s building into a modern
"Serving more than 600 individuals weekly across 30 active groups
Hope Church is an indispensable resource for the community
including limited accessibility for disabled individuals and young families
poor energy efficiency and insufficient modern amenities
our current space lacks flexibility and does not adequately support our diverse activities."
The congregation wants to create accessible entrances to the building from a carpark
and reconfigure the internal layout into a versatile modern space
the pews will be removed from the sanctuary and a new community café will be opened and used when worship services are not being held
New meeting rooms will be created and the church's audio-visual equipment will be upgraded
The congregation wants to open up the organ loft to local groups and there is scope for a small studio which could open up collaboration with Fife College
The refurbishment project will be carried out in two stages
Fife Council granted planning permission for phase one – a single storey extension including access ramps and stairs – last October and it has been costed at £1.63 million
The congregation has so far raised £1.47 million towards the cost of phase one and it is hoped that work will start in August 2025
the property holding arm of the Church of Scotland
has awarded a grant towards the cost of phase one
made possible through the sale of other buildings
This has in turn enabled the congregation to access grants from other organisations such as the Benefact Trust
An application for phase two of the refurbishment - internal and external alterations - was recently submitted to Fife Council and it is hoped that permission will be granted later month
The congregation is hopeful that the project will be fully completed by 2028
who was inducted into the new united charge in October 2022
explained: "Our church has always been more than just a building
a sanctuary and a source of strength for everyone who walks through its doors
"But we know there is more that we are called to do
especially in response to the real needs on our doorstep
"Our vision for Hope Church is to transform it into a beacon of support and care for our community – a church where everyone
The refurbishment plans have the support of the Kirk Session
Fife Presbytery and a recent online survey revealed 220 people fully endorse the purpose and ethos behind them
Mr Milton admitted that the task the congregation has set itself is ambitious
"This isn't just about renovations or modernising a space
Hope Church is situated in one of the most socio-economically challenged areas in Scotland
unemployment and addiction are daily struggles for many people in the community
Mr Milton said: "We see the impact every day and feel it deeply
"Jesus Christ brought the world a message of love
we have the chance to share that light with those in need
we're called to respond and this renewed church is our response - it's a way to show love in action
The congregation is applying for grants to fund the refurbishment and has launched an official fundraising campaign
seeking to raise £100,000 over the next three years
Anyone wishing to donate money should visit the it's website, or e-mail fundraising@kirkcaldyhopechurch.com.
The Church has been engaged in a major programme of reforms in order to deliver sustainable and realistic new expressions of ministry and church
ensuring buildings are suitable for the needs of mission in the 21st century
Head of Buildings and Projects for the General Trustees
said: "This project is a great example of the type of improvements being undertaken at many of our churches to ensure that they meet the current and future needs of our congregations and their local communities
"Working together with our congregations and presbyteries
the Trustees aim to ensure that we can deliver all the right spaces in the right places."
said the presbytery mission planning process represented a "fresh injection of life"
"Traditionally many churches have tended to shun changes that are risky
thrilling and occasionally terrifying," he explained
"But we've found that such changes can also be a lot of fun and a route towards achieving our missional goals
"Charismatic and skilled leadership from Josh has reinforced our recognition of the need to focus on longer term goals
rather than getting overly drawn into trivia
"Our vision has been aided by our recognition that repeating yesterday's formulas is seldom a solid basis for future development
"The redevelopment of the building will give us much more credibility – a renaissance in the eyes of the community."

A former gin and cocktail bar in Kirkcaldy could become a bridal shop if a proposal is accepted
The venue had several names over the years
However, the building on the corner of High Street and Dunnikier Road sold at auction last year.
And now new owners hope to ring changes with a one-stop shop for customers organising events
Grande Dreams has been operating at Mitchelston Drive since 2019
But they believe a town centre location will be more convenient for clients
The planning application lodged with Fife Council relates to the B-listed building’s ground floor
and any outside changes would be subject to a separate application
The applicants say they will develop space to exhibit their broad spectrum of products
was put up for sale last year after it closed suddenly
Pictures with the sales particulars showed it had been virtually frozen in time
glasses and even toilet roll were still in the building
The planning application will be considered by Fife Council in due course

Members of the Kirkcaldy Area Committee have agreed how the Local Community Planning (LCPB) Budget will be spent in the Kirkcaldy area over the next 3 years (2025-2028).
This is broken down into three categories:
£158,000 has been agreed for core commitments which are:
£50,000 has been agreed for Significant area priorities which are:
£15k allocated to each of the wards in the Kirkcaldy area
said: "I’m pleased we’ve been able to agree in principle how we’ll spend our Local Community Planning budget over the next three years
we must be flexible in our approach given that none of us have a crystal ball and can tell what the future holds
“We’ll continue to focus on the four priorities of Opportunities for all
Inclusive Growth and Jobs and Community Led Services
“In the Kirkcaldy area that means doing what we can to reduce poverty and help our young people realise their potential no matter the economic or social barriers
We also plan to maximise the tourism potential of the Kirkcaldy area and invest in facilities that will benefit our local communities
“From a jobs perspective we’ll look to help increase small to medium sized businesses
We’ll also be encouraging our schools
college and training providers to work together to so that people have the skills needed in the job market
“We’ll also be looking to continue to work with our communities so that they feel part of what’s going on and encourage a sense of ownership
“We understand there will be challenges ahead
but with the collective effort of our residents and partners
we’re confident that we can achieve our goals and make the Kirkcaldy area a great place to live
An 18-year-old man has been charged with the attempted murder of a teen in Kirkcaldy
The man was arrested after allegedly attempting to murder a 16-year-old male in Ravenscraig Park on Friday
A 14-year-old boy has also been charged with assault in connection with the incident
The 16-year-old was taken to Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy for treatment

The idea was last floated in 2007, but could a water link be reintroduced?
And so, too, has the north of Edinburgh, with Granton’s waterfront currently under development and the extension of the tram lines.
Fife councillors are now floating the idea of a vessel connecting the two areas by water.
“It’s quite a hike on the bus from here, so yeah, good idea,” said one Kirkcaldy local.
Another told STV News: “I think its a pretty good idea, helpful and easier to travel. It’s a change, instead of a train or driving.”
The plans would see a vessel leave from Kirkcaldy’s promenade and travel to an area in the north of Edinburgh. Currently, to get to the likes of Granton and Newhaven, it takes around 50 minutes by car.
Councillors say using a vessel like a hovercraft would cut that down to just 18 minutes.
In fact, the idea was trialled for a week back in 2007, when thousands queued up to take a hovercraft between Kirkcaldy and Portobello.
But despite it’s popularity – the plans were left high and dry.
Councillor Ian Cameron said: “There was a demand for it then, but there wasn’t an agreement, I believe, because of the problems coming in with the hovercraft to Portobello.
“That was a noisy hovercraft and we were in a different world then as well.
“The green argument has moved on, so I think there’s a greater political will to make it happen, and I think there is a greater will from our planet to make it happen.”
Edinburgh’s transport convenor said he is aware that Fife Council has recently began a Feasibility Study to examine the case for a cross-Forth vessel and said he’ll do everything he can to support and engage with councillors across the water.
But with plans still in the very early stages, it’ll be some time until we know whether the idea will be fully revisited or if that ship has already sailed.
Kirkcaldy Area Councillors have agreed how the £126,000 anti-poverty budget for the area should be spent over the next three year (2025-2028).
They have allocated money to the following projects:
said: “Sadly poverty continues to be an issue for many people across the Kirkcaldy Area
“As a Council we’re committed to doing everything we can to tackling poverty
This budget supports Council initiatives and 3rd sector work
from helping people to maximise their income to various school intervention programmes designed to help our young people become more confident and make positive choices
“The advantages of taking a local approach to tackling poverty means we can develop and implement new and innovative projects quickly
by working with local communities and the partner agencies involved in supporting people
“We will continue to respond to the most pressing issues faced by those experiencing or at risk of poverty.”
Our photos show how the budget has previously been spent:

A number of amendments to town centre parking in Kirkcaldy have been agreed by members of the Kirkcaldy Area Committee
This follows a walkabout meeting with councillors to discuss existing parking restrictions in the town centre and potential changes to them
From this it was concluded that some of the existing restrictions were outdated and that changing them could make better use of the road space and encourage people to enjoy the town centre for longer
said: “Parking is a hot topic that many of us are contacted about as local members so it’s important we review parking restrictions to make sure they’re still fit for purpose
“As well as speaking to people when we were on our walkabout
we also spoke with local businesses and community groups and have listened to what they said
these changes will be welcomed by residents and visitors and are more in line with their parking needs.”
Providing there are no objections to these proposals it’s hoped the amendments will be in place by the end of the year

Key information for Kirkcaldy
Two years have elapsed since the Lindsays Cross Country Season last headed to Dunniker Country Park in Kirkcaldy
But the atmosphere will no doubt be exactly the same on Saturday for another eagerly-awaited Lindsays Short Course XC

The Courier is taking a closer look at planning applications and developments across Fife with our new regular round-up
Fife Planning Ahead looks at the most interesting plans across the Kingdom
This week they include the demolition of a house at Lade Braes
St Andrews; a new memorial cairn to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Kirkcaldy war memorial; and the conversion of a Cupar office into flats
Permission has been granted for the demolition of a house within St Andrews conservation area
The applicants hope the detached home at 46 Lade Braes will be replaced with a contemporary home
Conservation area consent has now been granted to allow the existing building to be knocked down
the replacement will be a two-storey house with basement that is sympathetic to the conservation area
space for drying clothes and parking spaces
The planning agent adds: “The proposal is a positive contribution to the urban fabric of St Andrews.”
A memorial cairn is to be erected to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Kirkcaldy war memorial
Plans by the Royal British Legion have been approved by Fife Council
The stone cairn in the war memorial gardens will include a time capsule containing information provided by local schools
And seven “Walking With Heroes” stepping stones bearing the names of distinguished Kirkcaldy war heroes will also be laid
Kirkcaldy is thought to have Fife’s biggest war memorial
following a parade to the garden from Volunteers Green
According to the application on the council’s planning portal
a new standard for Kirkcaldy could also be dedicated
The war memorial will then be cleaned in advance of a significant remembrance parade in November
A former solicitor’s office in Cupar is to be converted into two flats
The ground floor of the premises at 35 Bonnygate was latterly a barbers
However it has been empty for several years
Fife Council planners have approved a plan to create low cost housing upstairs
the ground floor will continue to be a shop
The plan states the changes will not affect the exterior of the building
which is within the Cupar conservation area
The Glenrothes electricity supply is to be given a boost following approval of an energy storage battery box
The 200 kilowatt system will be installed at Viewfield Industrial Estate
AMP Clean Energy is developing similar boxes across the UK to provide a low carbon
flexible store of electricity for communities
It imports electricity from the network when demand is low and then exports it back during period of high demand
The company says this improves reliability given the increasing demand for electricity through the use of electric vehicles and heating systems
All of the stored electricity from the Glenrothes battery box will be consumed locally
A cycle path and footpath near Kincardine will be closed for more than seven months during work to repair an electrical tower
Scottish Power Energy Networks (SPEN) has been granted permission for the significant strengthening works near the town’s power station
The remedial work on the shore of the Firth of Forth will last until November
And a cycle route that runs from Station Road
under the Clackmannanshire Bridge and towards Kilbagie will close for the duration

Laura Muir celebrates European Indoor medals in 2017 on her arrvial back in Scotland from Belgrade (photo by Bobby Gavin)
Laura Muir to land bronze medal from Euro Indoors 2015
Laura Muir will receive her latest international medal in a field in Fife tomorrow – more than nine years after the race
Working with partners at European Athletics and UK Athletics
scottishathletics are thrilled to be staging a special medal presentation at the Lindsays Short Course XC at Kirkcaldy
Laura will be presented with a bronze medal from the 2015 European Indoors following a change to the Women’s 3000m podium at that event after a doping violation by the original gold medallist
will hand over the medal to Laura after the Senior Women’s race at the Lindsays Short Course XC as we seek to right an athletics wrong (on behalf of European Athletics)
The triple Olympic finalist was only 21 years of age in Prague in 2015 when finishing fourth in the Women’s 3000m final
A medal at the time would have been her first significant international success
Please come along to Dunniker Country Park for the Lindsays Short Course XC and support both the event and Laura’s medal moment (between 1.30pm and 2pm)
Kirkcaldy event preview
‘I would like to say a massive thank you to all those involved in the process which results in the medal now being awarded to me,’ said Laura
‘I cannot emphasise or explain how much it means to the athletes to have the results rectified and the medals awarded to those who compete within the rules of our sport
‘So I am very excited to see that particular European Indoors 2015 medal at Kirkcaldy and it will have a proud place alongside my other sporting accomplishments.’
was found guilty of doping offences last year
The Russian athlete was banned for four years (from September 2023) and had results expunged for a period of three years (from July 2013 to July 2016)
That timespan thus covers the 2015 European Indoors and Laura now receives the newly-issued bronze medal with gold for Sviatlana Kudzelich of Belarus and silver for Maureen Koster of Holland

A new community led campaign to decide how £300,000 is best spent improving communities across the Kirkcaldy area has been officially launched
A collaboration between Fife Council and its communities, the “You Decide” campaign is overseen by a steering group of residents from Kirkcaldy
who now want to hear from local people and groups with project ideas that could benefit from the available funding
Ideas for projects can be submitted via the campaign’s “Bright Ideas” application form at the You Decide/Kirkcaldy web page
with the group currently finalising a series of follow up local workshops and online engagement opportunities for people to discuss and develop ideas further
Applications are welcome from projects covering the priorities around People and Place in Fife Council’s current Plan 4 Kirkcaldy Area
including those designed to help with the cost-of-living crisis; build community spirit; support early intervention & crisis prevention and bolster local economies and skills
Projects ideas are also sought around further enhancing Kirkcaldy Town Centre and Waterfront and those helping build community spirit and improving the area’s outdoor places and spaces
Applications across broader themes including health & wellbeing and green initiatives combating climate change will also be considered
projects will be able to apply for funding ranging from £500 to £15,000
Deadline for applications is December 2024
with an agreed short- list of potential projects announced the following January
Successful projects will then be chosen by a public vote managed by the steering group in early March
All successful projects will be expected to spend any allocated funding within 12 months of receiving their grant award
Kirkcaldy Area Committee Convenor said: “You Decide” provides a great opportunity for local people to get involved
and make their voices heard by deciding how public money is spent on projects to make a positive difference to the communities where they live and work
I look forward to seeing what projects come out of this and the positive impact they have for the Kirkcaldy area’s future.”
Paul McGhie added: “Everyone on the steering group is excited and hopeful that some brilliant ideas will come forward and be developed into successful projects.”

A new community led steering group to oversee how £300k from Fife Council’s Community Recovery Fund (CRF) is best spent across the Kirkcaldy area is now up and running.
Part of the collaborative “You Decide” campaign between the Council and communities which gives local people a leading voice in how public money is spent on what matters to them most
the group came together last month and is now seeking ideas and applications for community led projects designed to empower and benefit Kirkcaldy
the group will also agree the criteria on which any funding is allocated
and is currently organising a series of workshops for local people to discuss ideas and select which projects will then go to a public vote to decide which are taken forward
Applications for funding are welcome from projects covering the priorities around People and Place in Fife Council’s current Plan 4 Kirkcaldy Area
including those designed to help with the cost-of-living crisis; support early intervention & crisis prevention in communities and initiatives aimed at bolstering local economies and skills
Projects ideas are also sought around further enhancing Kirkcaldy Town Centre and Waterfront; those helping build a Sense of Pride
Identity and Safer Communities and ideas to improve the area’s Outdoor Places and Spaces
Applications across broader themes including Health & Wellbeing; Building Community Spirit and Green Initiatives combating climate change will also be considered
local projects will be able to apply for funding ranging from £500 to £15,000
Commenting on the new community led campaign
Kirkcaldy Area Committee Convenor said: “You Decide” provides a great opportunity for local people to get involved
and make their voices heard by deciding how public money is spent on projects they choose which are aimed at making a positive difference to the communities where they live and work

I look forward to seeing what eventual projects come out of this and then
the positive impact they will invariably have for the Kirkcaldy area’s future.”
Paul McGhie added: “It is great to be involved in this initiative from the Council that gives local people and groups a chance to support and enhance their communities
Everyone on the steering group is excited and hopeful that some brilliant ideas will come forward and be developed into successful projects.”

An agreed short- list of potential projects will then be announced the following January before going to the public vote in early March
with results then announced later that month
