Mind the Gap: Join the Place North Viability Gap Campaign
Approval is recommended for the Knottingley project
Wakefield Council’s planning committee will consider the proposals at its meeting on 12 December
with the affordable homes being backed by Homes England’s Affordable Homes Programme
The application site is around 20 acres and is currently agricultural land
the majority of it allocated for housing in the adopted local plan
It is roughly rectangular and located at the south-eastern extent of the urban area of Knottingley
along with a concrete manufacturing plant to the north
A railway line divides the site from a quarry to the west
Couuntrside Properties is seeking full consent for 218 homes with associated car parking
landscaping and infrastructure with access from Womersley Road via a proposed priority T-junction
The access road leading into the site is to be tree-lined with grass verges separating the carriageway from the footway
with a “focal area” of public open space to be formed at the head of this
Housing layout has been designed in blocks creating three loop roads within the estate
while a ribbon of public open space is to be created along the western boundary providing a buffer to the railway line beyond
This open space is to include a footway within it and two “play nodes” breaking up its length
A similar but narrower buffer of open space is to be provided along the southern and northern site boundary
As set out in the planning officers’ report
Countryside’s plans have attracted 127 objections
including infrastructure and over-development
Edward Architecture’s design & access statement said: “Detailed and careful consideration has been given to these proposals that will create a development which respects the existing site and will provide a high quality and well considered place to live.”
The plans can be viewed on Wakefield Council’s planning portal with the reference 24/00231/FUL

Rayogreatest hitswest yorkshirenewsKnottingley domestic abuser jailed after attacking partner and controlling her lifeShe'll serve four years behind bars
along with three years on extended licence
A West Yorkshire domestic abuser has been handed a four year prison sentence
after assaulting her former partner and attempting to control her life
of Low Cross Court in Knottingley admitted intentional strangulation
wounding with intent and engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour against her victim
Alongside the prison sentence she was handed a three year extended licence period and was made subject to an indefinite restraining order at Leeds Crown Court
It comes after an incident on September 2 last year
where Hanson and the female victim had been socialising with another couple
An argument broke out during which Hanson became verbally abusive
The victim was followed to Hanson's home
where she was pinned to the bed by her neck
Hanson made several threats to kill the victim during the attack
She late attacked a friend who attempted to break up the assault
detectives heard the victim was subjected to controlling behaviour throughout the relationship
including being prevented from speaking to friends or family and being forbidden to have a mobile phone
said: “This has been a sustained attack lasting several minutes
with Hanson repeatedly making threats about killing the female victim
Hanson then became violent toward one of their friends
“Hanson has shown they are a dangerous individual who is prepared to use extreme levels of violence in a domestic relationship
Hanson was remanded in custody throughout this court process and has now been jailed
“This case highlights that domestic abuse does not only occur in heterosexual intimate relationships
"I would urge anyone who is in the LGBTQ+ community who is the victim of domestic abuse
or who has concerns for a friend or family member
to please have the confidence to come forward,"
