Bulldozers are back on the beaches again to carry out vital shingle replenishment work throughout January between Shoreham and Lancing
This work will help give better protection to local communities from coastal flooding this winter
Recent winter storms and gales have eroded some of the shingle beach in Lancing that provides a soft-engineered flood defence to the West Sussex frontage
Following consultation between Shoreham Port Authority
Adur District Council and the local nature reserve
the Environment Agency has begun recycling shingle from the nature reserve area to replenish the Lancing beach
The work to recycle suitable but limited material at Shoreham Fort will also include some shingle from the local nature reserve beach frontage
whilst carefully avoiding any environmental sensitive areas
Environment Agency representatives will be available to interview about the coastal defence work outside the Perch Cafe
BN15 8RA between 10am to 12 noon on Wednesday
Please confirm your attendance in advance by contacting the Environment Agency’s South East press office on 0800 141 2743
flood and coastal risk manager for Sussex at the Environment Agency
We are taking shingle from Shoreham Fort and moving it along the beach to the eroded areas at Widewater at Lancing Beach Green
Sea levels are projected to rise by more than one metre in the south of England over this century
and with more frequent powerful storms also predicted
the risk of increased coastal erosion and flooding is likely
The shingle recycling will help to maintain the flood defences offered by the beach
and to provide the standard of protection required by the coastal defence scheme completed by the Environment Agency in partnership with Worthing Borough Council in 2005
The Environment Agency will move approximately 20,000 tonnes of shingle from Shoreham to Lancing
This is enough shingle to fill the Albert Hall three times over
The shingle is loaded into dump trucks by an excavator
which then transport the material along the beach frontage to where it is needed
Bulldozers then position the material into the beach profile
but the Environment Agency is advising the public to be cautious and keep a safe distance from working machinery

Run report for Lancing Beach Green parkrun event #248 – 26th April 2025
This week's run report comes from Gill Holmes who visited us from Maidstone River Park
I’ve completed 452 parkruns at 243 different locations (nearly in the Freyne Club!) including some parkruns outside of the UK
as amongst many of the other parkrun challenges
I am trying to fill in the gaps of my “Wilson Index” on the 5k app and Lancing Beach Green being event number 248
It also gives me another event for “South East England”
Initially I had planned to travel by train
however I noticed last night that the 1st train that I intended to take had been cancelled
I debated trying to drive to a different station
Although I try to avoid driving to parkrun
Despite a hold up on one of the roads due to a lorry going off the road
I arrived in Lancing with plenty of time to park up before meeting the other volunteers
The first timers briefing was given by Adam Collard who also gave the main briefing
He certainly earnt his post parkrun tea and breakfast
Today parkrun were celebrating “parkwalk” with the aim of encouraging people to be part of a record-breaking biggest walking weekend ever at parkrun
We had 7 parkwalkers at Lancing Beach Green parkrun and a further 2 tail walkers
A lot of people can think “parkrun isn’t for me”
The tail walkers ensure no-one is last and the park walkers walk a bit further ahead to encourage and support the faster walkers
If you can’t convince people to come run/walk at parkrun
perhaps encourage them to do some volunteering and they can see what it is all about
Many parkrun volunteers are not runners/ walkers
but they still get the benefit of the sense of community and fresh air
not to mention the appreciation of those of us running and walking
The Lancing Beach Green course is an out and back section on the grass before a short sharp incline onto the coastal path for a longer out and back section
We had the beach and sea on one side and the Widewater nature reserve on the other
Even though the course is narrow in parts
participants were great and kept to the right
ensuring everyone could enjoy the event regardless of whether they were at the front of the field or further back
I joined Yvonne Davies and Harry Degiovanni
I then took the finish tokens to the café to be sorted
I was delighted to find that all 231 tokens that were given out were returned – well done everyone
whose enthusiasm and support motivated us around the course and ensured that we stayed on track
who gave up their time at Lancing Beach Green parkrun
Did you know you can have the best of both worlds and be able to run AND volunteer at a parkrun
carpark marshal and pacer can be combined with participation in the parkrun
they can help with barcode scanning after their run
Roles available can be found on each parkrun event website or on the 5k app
Simply email the event you wish to volunteer at with your barcode number and you’ll be welcomed with open arms
finish tokens and barcode scanning are great for when you fancy giving your legs a rest
Don’t forget junior parkruns on Sundays; they also welcome volunteers too
Junior parkrun volunteering is a lot of fun and it is important that we encourage our younger parkrunners/ walkers to enjoy all the benefits of parkrun
For those of you who enjoy the challenges on the 5k app
Volunteer Ratio and Volunteer Tourist challenges
Some volunteer roles are suitable for those younger parkrunners who are completing their Duke of Edinburgh awards and need to do some volunteering as part of it – ask one of the Run Directors for more information
There was a great mix of people running and walking at Lancing Beach Green parkrun today; 40:60 female: male
Runners and walkers ranged from Martha Weston in the JW15-17 and Emmett Morley (on his very first parkrun) in the JM10 categories to Heather Garrett in the VW80-84 and Hugh Garrett in the VM85-89 category
proving that parkrun really is for everyone
There were 231 runners and walkers finishing at Lancing Beach Green parkrun today
15 people were showing up in the results as “unknown”
It is well worth downloading the 5k app to your phone
You can access your barcode using this app
ensuring you get a credit for each parkrun/walk you complete
plus there are some great challenges for running/ walking and volunteering to keep you motivated
I also find it really useful for when I am doing tourism
to find new parkruns and information such as parking/ facilities that they offer
I’d recommend also taking a screenshot of the barcode on your phone in case the App has a rare technical issue
The first finisher was Chris Emery on his 3rd visit to Lancing Beach Green parkrun with a PB time of 19:12
The first female finisher was Martha Weston on her 21st visit to Lancing Beach Green parkrun with a PB time of 23:19
The highest age grading was 80.46% achieved by Gill Cammack
The highest male age grading was Mark Whittington with 76.70%
Jeff Parkinson and Julie Gordon achieved new PBs
Gillian Standing and Richard Cloake joined us for their first parkrun today
Saturday mornings will never be the same again!
I hope you continue this journey and one day earn those lovely red 50
Linda Woolley joined us for her first parkrun volunteering today as a tail walker
We had 38 tourists visiting Lancing Beach Green parkrun for the first time
I have started to include the “volunteeriest volunteer” in my run reports as an alternative to “runniest runner”
A high number of runs is impressive; however
it would not be possible without our volunteers who ensure week in week out
Today’s volunteeriest volunteer was Yvonne Davies
having also volunteered at 243 locations including parkrun volunteering in Ireland
Yvonne began her volunteer journey at Watergrove as “other” on the 1st January 2017
She has fulfilled 10 distinct volunteering roles; Barcode scanning
Jill has completed 3 parkruns at 3 different locations; Barrow
Yvonne began parkrunning at Barrow parkrun on the 3rd August 2019
Yvonne and all the other wonderful volunteers
best wishes for everyone taking part in tomorrow’s London Marathon
including Lancing Beach Green parkrun’s Kate and Tanja

We've put up for sale the site of the former Lancing police station to help the community benefit from the building again
We bought the building in North Road in 2021 after it had sat empty for a number of years
The site backs onto Monks Recreation Ground
With the help of flexible office company Freedom Works
the building was converted into a community
charity and small business space known as Fabric
hot-desking facilities and event space were leased to local groups to help support the community and up-and-coming businesses taking their first steps
Since then we have been reviewing how the whole site could be redeveloped as part of the long-term regeneration of the centre of Lancing’s shopping area.
This included discussing potential uses for the site with the community as part of our Lancing: Now and into the Future project
which aims to prioritise projects that meet residents' needs and aspirations
We have now decided that the best option would be to sell the land to someone who will be able to bring the important site back into use
The income from the sale will be invested in other community projects and programmes across the district
in line with our approach of putting our funds into those assets that bring the greatest benefits for residents
Adur’s cabinet member for regeneration
“The police station site is a prominent location in Lancing with a huge amount of potential for redevelopment.
“We’re looking for someone who wants to invest in this great location and help us transform North Road for everyone who lives and works in the area.”
