had a unique dilemma when they showed up to help remove invasives at Routley Park last Saturday – running out of weeds to pull But the organizers pivoted to another park needing attention – Meadows Edge Park A total of 39 community members came together to remove invasive Himalayan blackberry this past Saturday "The location of this activity changed at the last minute to Meadows Edge Park due to there not being enough invasive plants for the people signed up to remove at Routley Park It's a great problem to have and means that the efforts of our team and the Township of Langley are being incredibly effective together," said Ashton Kerr Lower Mainland Green Team partnerships manager 21 were visiting Meadows Edge Park for the first time (despite a large majority of participants being residents) and 13 were removing invasive plants for the first time They removed five cubic metres or 31 bathtubs full of Himalayan blackberries. For many and make a meaningful difference, Kerr said “I think this event helped make the park a better place,” shared Icy a local youth who joined the activity with her family “It showed me that even though I’m just a kid Seeing all the blackberries we pulled out made me feel proud.” This activity built on restoration work by the Langley Environmental Partners Society (LEPS) and their TD Tree Days planting at this park in October 2024 "LEPS does incredible work in the Township and we want to build and uplift the work they are doing whenever we can Joining their wide variety of programming is a great way for local residents to get further involved in caring for nature in their community," Kerr added The weed pull was the first of nine being organized this year in partnership with the Township The Lower Mainlands next activity was at Meadows Edge Park Wednesday April 16 when more than 70 local Grade 3 to 5 students hit the park to remove invasive plants This past winter was indeed a wicked one – the warm January followed by biting -20C in February was extremely hard on plants I spoke to a lot of garden clubs during the spring and losses were great all around Gardeners lost plants they have never lost before and others saw plants survive that they were sure would be lost This was a particularly hard year for hydrangeas We sadly lost a 40 year old Japanese maple and thought we had lost our 35-year-old fig tree surprise – the fig just started putting on leaves in mid July Several clematis that we thought we had lost suddenly grew in June and starting blooming in July Other plants thrived – we have never seen such a wonderful blooming on the peonies as this year They were actually breaking dormancy in February when we were hit with the cold snap They just kept going and had the best year ever and astilbes loved the wet spring and have been stars in the garden And the lily bulbs have far exceeded any expectations this year putting out amazing blooms that lasted longer than usual My roses took a big hit and were black to the bottom We pruned them back in March and in April new shoots appeared Behind the roses was a camellia that did not fare so well – dead to the root dahlia tubers that I had left in over the winter (I was too busy in the fall to dig them up and completely forgot) is actually blooming beautifully in the garden right now – a total bonus in my eyes Many people who planted their vegetables and annuals earlier in the spring found themselves replanting after so much cold and wet in March and April the rough start to the year is becoming a distant memory as we enjoy the bounty of current vegetables and flowers so lawns are actually looking decent with the recent two days of rain Always nice when we can have intermittent showery days in between the hot ones – a gardeners biggest wish Water conservation continues to be important to all – so enjoy what is blooming now and hope we get more rainy days soon Fall will be here before we know it and raking season will begin – When Riley Green and Ella Langley perform together flashing each other that knowing look in between choruses about chance encounters or all-night benders even if they’re just two artists singing a song the same kind of magic was sparked between Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn when they came together to croon a song like ‘Louisiana Woman Mississippi Man’ or when Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers joined forces on ‘Islands in the Stream’ it’s something that has become harder to find In 2022, I wrote about the death of the country music duo eulogizing the legend-on-legend pairings that had become unique to the genre and country music was once flush with star-powered duos two solo performers who occasionally blended their individual talents to create something as one even Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings – several Twentieth Century country stars coupled up and proved the whole really was greater than the sum of its parts From these pairs sprang innumerable hits like the charming Twitty-Lynn opus ‘You’re The Reason Our Kids Are Ugly’ the tearful Parton-Rogers duet ‘You Can’t Make Old Friends’ and anything from the enduring Nelson-Jennings catalogue these couplings did more than just collaborate trading verses and chiming in on choruses; rather These partnerships were informed by more than just talent their hold on audiences boiling down to the chemistry they shared an old married couple or outlaws on the lam together you felt each sharp jab flung in ‘You’re The Reason Our Kids Are Ugly’ experienced the bittersweet pangs of ‘You Can’t Make Old Friends’ and got roped in by ‘Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys’ They made active participants out of passive listeners taking audiences with them as they navigated feelings of affection even indifference through music and making them believe every word country music experienced a divide and with it came the demise of such duos The genre began to buckle under the weight of expectation with the chasm between what was considered pop rock and pure country fracturing further and each new fleet of country stars becoming increasingly incompatible brief alliances between a rotating door of hitmakers who had little interest in the long haul country fans have been all but placated with one-off duets traded between artists tacking relevant names onto theirs That may also be the case with this recent slate of hits from Riley Green and Ella Langley but it’s the chemistry they share – the same magnetism that was undeniable between the country power couples of yore – that seems to say otherwise It’s palpable when they swap exposing lines on the flirtatious waltz ‘you look like you love me’ or lay themselves bare in the regretful ballad ‘Don’t Mind If I Do’ this kind of connection has led many to speculate about their relationship status fans and critics alike wondering whether the two really are singing what they’re feeling While these theories have been vehemently denied the stars asserting their relationship is strictly professional there is something undeniable between them that has us hooked They seem to show their cards when they’re performing together both of them free to let a shared vulnerability shine through But their bond goes much deeper than upbringing “I've done a few duets at this point and some feature stuff When the pair dropped ‘you look like you love me’ just months before, Green spoke with Holler about how it all happened so naturally saying “the song with Ella was one of those things that can only happen out on the road Maybe that’s what also makes this duo work instead nurturing a working relationship that wasn’t bound by what would sell ‘you look like you love me’ was simply a good tune and I think she kinda thought maybe it would be a good collaboration with somebody so I wrote a second verse for it,” Green added giant stars joining forces with fellow titans but they feel more strategic than meant to be the Green-Langley alliance may be just the remedy for modern country’s recent neglect of the duo could usher in a new age of the country power couple and an era of much-needed camaraderie and common ground Come the New Year, Riley Green and Ella Langley will be out on the road together again for Green’s Damn Country Music Tour Only time – and many more miles – will tell if theirs is a partnership built to last For more on Riley Langley has both ignited and extinguished rumours that she is newly engaged After teasing that she had “some surprises” earlier this week on her Instagram account Langley’s relationship status was The duo released their viral collaboration, “you look like you love me,” earlier this year. The song appears on Langley’s debut album. They’ve since teamed up again on “Don’t Mind If I Do,” the title track of Green’s latest record. Green said on The Viall Files that the second collaboration was “very accidental “I wrote that song on the road and I wrote it as a duet and I was in the studio and I asked Ella to come by to put a female vocal so I could make sure the key was right,” Green shared “And I was thinking about getting somebody else because we already had that song together [‘you look like you love me’] ‘I can’t think of anybody that’s gonna do it better than that,’ so it’s been cool to have two very different songs that are working really well.” Earlier in the conversation, Green also told the story behind “you look like you love me.” The viral song won int he Musical Event of the Year category at the 58th CMA Awards last month in Nashville Langley and Green took the stage to perform that song during the show that night Maybe if the second verse is like the guy’s perspective or something then we’d have a song to play on tour.’ I had no idea it would be a hit at all I thought it might help the song a little bit …One day I opened my phone and you couldn’t not hear it.” Green confirmed he isn’t dating Langley, and he also opened up about his current outlook on dating during his conversation on the podcast. Viall asked the country star whether any of his ex-girlfriends have looked him up since he became a successful singer-songwriter. Green said “most of them” have but “my success hasn’t made it worth putting up with me though when I was actually old enough and mentally I thought I wanted to settle down was when my career really started to take off And that was a time when I couldn’t focus on one thing,” Green shared in that kind of entertainment line of work or whatever Especially with the travel and just the million distractions there are I thought I’d put my nose down and kind of grind for a couple years and try to get as much (as I could) out of a country music career and it’s just continued for about six years I have enough time to write a song and that’s what I should be doing so it would take a really special girl to be OK with the amount of travel and time I’m gonna be gone People can kick off Earth Month by getting some dirt under their nails The Lower Mainland Green Team and the Township of Langley are kicking off Earth Month with a community habitat restoration activity at Routley Park on Saturday abilities and backgrounds are invited to join This is the first of nine activities the team is organizing in partnership with the Township this year Riley Green joins The Kelleigh Bannen Show on Apple Music Country to discuss his viral duet with Ella Langley (‘you look like you love me') the situation that urged him to write ‘Jesus Saves' and the Eric Church song that inspired him to write ‘Worst Way.' Listen to the episode anytime on-demand at apple.co/_KelleighBannen  Riley Green Tells Apple Music About Writing “Jesus Saves” Solo I just felt like I sat down and when I'm really passionate about something or I think it's all there And that was how ‘Jesus Saves' was for me is I thought that idea out and I thought the message was strong enough that I wanted to try to write it and I was just at home So it ended up being one that really stands out to a lot of folks it seems like Riley Green Tells Apple Music What Inspired Him to Write ‘Jesus Saves' My thing was more seeing a guy on the side of the road in Nashville Tennessee and having a piece of cardboard and trying to win over everybody that rode by just what they could fit on that sign And that was the idea… And I think if you think about that song and think about if you really knew what that person had been through to get them to that place you'd be a little less quick to judge and maybe a little more compassionate Riley Green Tells Apple Music About Writing ‘Worst Way,' Inspired by Covering Eric Church’s ‘Wrecking Ball' in His Live Show When I wrote ‘Worst Way' that was in [the vein of Eric Church’s ‘Wrecking Ball'.] And I had a vision of just songs that give me that type of feeling that over the years ‘Slow Dancing in a Burning Room,' John Mayer something about that was so cool and to make it country and to make it my own And I would've never thought that song would be as big as it has been Riley Green Tells Apple Music About His Friendship with Ella Langley Me and Ella have a mutual friend that was a promoter that Ella Langley I can remember when I went to write the verse I really didn't want to step on her toes in the song for the girl to be kind of coming onto the guy in the bar I thought that's what made the
