Welling United are delighted to confirm Lee Martin as the club’s new First-Team Manager
38-year-old midfielder Martin enjoyed a successful playing career having began as a youngster with Manchester United
making three first-team appearances for the Premier League giants
while enjoying loan spells with Royal Antwerp
He made a permanent move to Ipswich Town in 2009 where he made well over 100 appearances over a four-year spell which included a loan stay with Charlton Athletic during the 2010/11 campaign
A three-year stint with Millwall followed before Martin also represented Northampton Town
where he rounded off his playing career by helping his side to the Isthmian League Division South East title
He now turns his attention to management as he looks to help the Wings rebuild following relegation from the National League South in 2024/25
Speaking after putting pen to paper at Park View Road
Martin said: “I’m making that transition from playing into management and I’m delighted to get it over the line – I can’t wait to get started
We’re ahead of the curve in terms of recruitment
we’ve highlighted some good players and the big thing we’re going after now is character
We want good characters around the place because we want to merge the players and supporters back together
“The fans are fundamental to what we want to create here
there’s been a disconnect and we want them to feel a part of us so we can be one team together.”
“We want to have control of possession,” added Martin
play through the thirds and create goalscoring opportunities
We want supporters to be coming here excited to watch an entertaining game of football and one in which we score plenty of goals.”
and will be assisted by his former teammate
Welling-born Billy Bingham who enjoyed a career as a midfielder for Dagenham & Redbridge
The new Wings boss will meet supporters at a ‘Meet the Manager’ event at Park View Road
with full details to be announced in due course

CNA followed People's Action Party teams around West Coast-Jurong West GRC

Members of the PAP's West Coast-Jurong West GRC (top left and bottom right)
East Coast GRC (top right) and Nee Soon GRC (bottom left) teams on walkabouts to thank residents of their constituencies for their support on May 4
SINGAPORE: Although the last results of the General Election came in well after midnight
MPs-elect had already hit the ground running on Sunday (May 4) morning
eagerly thanking residents for their support
National Development Minister Desmond Lee led his five-person team as they greeted patrons of a coffee shop in Jurong West hours after winning the newly formed West Coast-Jurong West Group Representation Constituency (GRC)
The team won 60.01 per cent of votes against a Progress Singapore Party (PSP) team led by chairman Tan Cheng Bock
The team comprises former Jurong GRC MP Shawn Huang
former West Coast GRC MP Ang Wei Neng and electoral debutants Cassandra Lee and Hamid Razak
As Mr Lee made his rounds around the coffee shop
some residents having their breakfast eagerly waited for him to approach their table for handshakes
while other passers-by made a beeline towards him to congratulate him for the team’s win
Although this was just the first stop of the day
Mr Lee patiently listened as residents took turns to speak to him
occasionally wiping the sweat off his face from the morning heat with a towel
He extended his arm multiple times to help them hold their phones up as they took selfies
and encouraged his teammates to squeeze in for the shots
An elderly resident told Dr Hamid in Mandarin that he was very intelligent for being able to speak the language
while his teammates laughed and nodded in agreement
Speaking to members of the media before a walkabout at their second stop
Mr Lee said that it was “very humbling” to have the strong support of the residents compared to five years ago
The PSP in 2020 came within a few percentage points of victory in what was the tightest race of the polls that year
the PAP retained West Coast GRC with 51.68 per cent of the vote
while the PSP secured two Non-Constituency MP (NCMP) seats as the best-performing losing team
answered questions that residents are concerned about
many projects that we’ve done to continue to connect with residents,” Mr Lee said
“So certainly (there is) a strong sense of responsibility to continue to support the residents who have entrusted us with the support they gave us yesterday.”
Mr Lee said that the team will continue working on measures to help residents with issues such as the cost of living and job security
explaining how it has worked with Employment and Employability Institute (e2i) of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) to better support fresh graduates from institutes of higher learning
as well as middle aged and older workers in the west of Singapore
“We sense a greater anxiety amongst people living here about job security
and therefore we redouble our efforts with strong partnerships with e2i
to better enhance support for different groups of Singaporeans living here in West Coast and Jurong West,” he said
There are also many estates in the constituency that will be undergoing upgrading and enhancement works with the help of residents’ inputs to ensure the amenities are “meaningful to them”
When asked how the team is going to celebrate their win before the new week begins
it’s letting it seep into us the enormity of this responsibility and the tremendous trust that residents have given to us.”
Before the team arrived at the third location
there was already excited chatter about their visit
and a crowd started forming at the entrance
The team had barely stepped out of the car when the crowd erupted in cheers and a lion dance troupe started beating on drums and crashing cymbals
Mr Lee could barely walk three steps before being stopped for pictures
and some parents carried their children onto seats so they could catch a glimpse of the candidates
He has been involved in a lot of community events and the people here like him very much,” said Mr Martin Lim
“Many amenities have been rebuilt and he takes the time to understand what his residents want,” the workforce trainer said
proudly adding that he has had a number of conversations with the minister at community events
he hopes to see his MPs speak out more on the foreign workforce policy
“Many people are not doing well in their careers and feel competition from foreigners
MPs shouldn’t stay silent and raise these issues in parliament,” the 60-year-old said
When asked why the PSP did not win as high a vote share as they did in 2020
Mr Lim said that many residents felt like Dr Tan was not on the ground enough this time
but Desmond Lee has been on the ground putting in effort to connect with the residents
A person talking versus a person that’s doing
The voters can see the difference,” he said
Another resident having his morning coffee shared a similar sentiment
“Age is catching up with Tan Cheng Bock and he should stick to retirement rather than entering politics,” said Mr Vincent Gomez
said he felt “happy and excited” about the PAP’s win in the GRC
“They’re a very strong team and there have been many infrastructure improvements
Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and his Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC teammates were also up early to thank residents for their support
The team arrived at Marsiling Lane Market and Food Centre at around 9am
with a lady running up to him to shake his hand and to give him a hug
A crowd also surrounded Mr Wong and his team at Yew Tee Square
Mr Ng told reporters that his first priority was to respond to the immediate needs of residents based on feedback he has received over the last 40 days
such as cleanliness and pest control issues
The mood was jubilant across various spots in East Coast GRC as some residents were eager to catch a glimpse of the PAP’s victory parade there
the PAP improved on its 2020 performance in East Coast GRC
retaining it with 58.76 per cent of the vote
On board an open-top bus were familiar faces and fresh ones – Minister for Culture
Senior Minister of State for National Development Tan Kiat How and Deputy Speaker Jessica Tan
alongside newly elected MPs Dinesh Vasu Dash and Hazlina Abdul Halim
smiling and waving PAP flags from the bus’ rooftop deck
drivers rolled down their windows to return the waves
Some even honked several times in a playful tune
residents also smiled and waved as the bus travelled past them
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the victory parade
Mr Tong said that the immediate plan is to look at his team’s respective divisions to ensure alignment
which he describes as the “new kid on the block.”
“Integrating Joo Chiat is an obvious priority
we also need to assess what’s working across the constituency
both from an infrastructure perspective and in terms of softer
citing support for seniors and caregivers as an example
Information technology professional Derek Ho
was at a market in Bedok with his wife and daughter when he ran into Mr Tong and his team
He said that he had been up until 4am watching the election results
and he had expected a tough fight for East Coast GRC
I think this shows that they have done a good job serving residents here.”
Although Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam had concluded his celebratory walkabout before the afternoon sun kicked in
the four other members of the newly elected Nee Soon GRC team still managed to draw an eager and exuberant crowd at Chong Pang City at around noon
The Nee Soon PAP team secured 73.81 per cent of the vote against Red Dot United
This is nearly a 12 per cent increase from the 2020 election
and already had residents coming to them to share their woes
one resident who was just about to dig into his bowl of noodles excitedly said: “PAP
said that the PAP’s vote share in the constituency was “not surprising at all”
“Everyone used to think that Yishun was haunted or it wasn’t a good place to live in because of all the bad news
adding that he had seen infrastructure and cleanliness improvements in his estate over the last few years
Dr Syed Harun said that the team is “already getting the work done” and has gathered feedback from residents over the last two weeks
“We do find that there are many things that we can continue to improve upon
“We met a large swath of the residents already
but it’s really about looking to the last mile to be able to deliver a good service for the residents
and to be able to speak to the mandate and support that they’ve given us through this election,” Dr Syed Harun said
The former Nominated Member of Parliament said he would be holding his first Meet-The-People Session on Monday
and added that all candidates “bring their own strengths to the team”
“There might be some minor changes with regards to how I carry myself with my residents
how I interact with my residents,” he said
“It’s really about bringing our own personalities to the fore so that the residents also get to know us a bit better
and the sincerity in which we work to be able to improve their lives.”
Fellow Nee Soon MP-elect Jackson Lam told CNA that many residents have voiced out the municipal issues they face in their estate
and he has encouraged them to come for the Meet-The-People Sessions to share more
He added that his top priority would be to go around meeting more residents and understanding their concerns before he further helps them
"We were very humbled by the huge support by the huge from our residents
(the) work actually starts today," Mr Lam said

A young father of one who drowned while swimming in the river Lee in Cork last week was remembered at his funeral Mass as a caring person who
never hesitated to reach out and help others
drowned after he got into difficulty last Wednesday evening when he and a friend attempted to swim across the north channel of the river Lee from Popes Quay to Lavitts Quay near the city centre
The tragedy was witnessed by dozens of people
many of whom filmed it and posted footage of Mr Hyde’s body being recovered from the river online
His mother Lily Hyde gathered with her surviving adult children
Michael and Mark and Lucia to say their farewells at a concelebrated requiem Mass at Cork’s North Cathedral near where the family lived
Ms Hyde read the two main readings before funeral celebrant Fr Marius O’Reilly told mourners that Ms Hyde had asked him to thank many people on her behalf – the gardaí
medics and local community for their help and support since the loss of her son
Fr O’Reilly said that Mr Hyde didn’t have it easy in life
having lost his father Michael when he was a young boy
Fr O’Reilly noted that Mr Hyde subsequently had to similarly grieve the death of his older brother Brian
who died in his sleep more than five years ago
in spite of all the tragedy Mr Hyde experienced in life
“These [losses] had a big impact on him at such a young age
But the thing that everyone seems to talk about is what a gentle person he was
“I even heard how he would love the animals – and even the worms
How he would look after even worms — wanting to care for them
he was also someone who would reach out to people and try to help people
But he was a great lesson to all of us in that sense.”
Fr O’Reilly told mourners that Mr Hyde loved sport and had played with Na Piarsaigh Hurling and Football Club growing up while he also followed Leeds United
which made him stand out as Leeds fans are not too plentiful
as he pondered that Mr Hyde must have enjoyed their recent promotion
who had recently begun working in a supermarket in Douglas
he was buried at St Catherine’s Cemetery in Kilcully
The tragic incident prompted his mother to phone into The Neil Prendeville Show on Cork’s Red FM to express her upset and disgust at people filming it

“Luke . . . was my baby son. I was disgusted when I heard you talking this morning about those people down there. It was like a circus, watching my son drown, instead of trying to help him,” said Ms Hyde, who lost another son, Brian, in 2019.

May 4, 2025 12:49 PM EDTDavid Lee Roth returned to the concert stage five years after his last full live show—and nearly four years after announcing his retirement. The original Van Halen frontman performed on May 3 at the M3 Rock Festival at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia
Other performers at the weeklong rock fest included Sebastian Bach
Roth’s set, complete with four musicians and four backup singers, consisted entirely of Van Halen hits he recorded before the Van Hagar era of the band, as seen in YouTube footage from the show
Songs included “Panama,” “You Really Got Me,” "Dance the Night Away,” and “Hot for Teacher.”
The rocker also addressed the audience to joke about his revoked retirement. "We've reached the end of my first retirement," Roth, 70, told the crowd, per Ultimate Classic Rock
"How many retirements did Rocky have
Roth’s last show before this was an opening set for Kiss on March 10
Roth’s stage return came days after he was criticized by fellow former Van Halen lead singer Sammy Hagar. In April, Hagar told Rolling Stone that Roth pulled out of some shows at the last minute during their joint “Sam and Dave” tour in 2002.
he would call in and say that the bus broke down
10 minutes before he was supposed to go on," Hagar claimed
Hagar also said Roth should have taken a page from his days as a solo artist instead of just repping Van Halen onstage
“He did the worst when he headlined," Hagar said
“He did his whole Van Halen show from 1983
‘What an idiot!’ He should have represented himself a little more like who he was as a solo artist."
Roth announced his retirement in an October 2021 comment to the Las Vegas Review-Journal
“I’m throwing in the shoes,” the rocker said at the time
…I am encouraged and compelled to really come to grips with how short time is
and my time is probably even shorter.”
compelled me to really address that every time I go on stage
I endanger that future,” Roth added

David Lee Roth made a triumphant comeback from a five-year stage absence Saturday night at the M3 festival, delivering a strong set of Van Halen classics with the help of a killer eight-piece band
You can see video and the full set list from the show below
"We've reached the end of my first retirement," the singer joked at one point
nine?" The set was completely dominated by Van Halen songs
not even his hit cover of "California Girls."
The singer was joined by Al Estrada on guitar
Francis Valentino on drums and a keyboard player whose name we are not sure of quite yet
Roth made great use of a new four-piece group of backing vocalists
a brilliant addition to his live show and a textbook example of turning a recent weakness into a strength
"Ain't no tracks up here tonight
Roth played off his new vocal section repeatedly during song breakdowns
and of course they did "I'm the One" complete with the big a capella breakdown
It was Roth's first official show since he opened for Kiss on March 10, 2020 in Lubbock Texas just before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the tour
When Kiss returned to the road a year and a half later they did so without the former Van Halen singer
Roth announced an early 2022 Las Vegas residency in October 2021, but wound up canceling all of those shows
Roth has reportedly played a handful of private shows since that time, in addition to posting a variety of previously unreleased songs, countless dance videos and occasionally trading barbs with his buddy Sammy Hagar on YouTube
Although there's only one other confirmed date on Roth's 2025 schedule so far - Sept. 12 at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga, California - the singer seemed to hint at bigger plans as the show drew to a close
After repeatedly congratulating his band for playing "a perfect fucking show," he told the crowd

Denzel Washington and Spike Lee have collaborated for the fifth time on new A24/Apple crime thriller HGHEST 2 LOWEST.
The film will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival later this month and will arrive in cinemas on August 22
It will then land on streaming on September 5
the film is a loose adaptation of Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low
which follows a businessman deciding whether to use his wealth to further his career or save a child’s life
that novel is a reinterpretation of Ed McBain’s mystery novel The King’s Ransom
“One of the best things about film school is that you get introduced to world cinema, not just Hollywood,” Lee said about the film last year at the Red Sea Film Festival
“Seeing Kurosawa’s film ‘Rashomon’ and its structure inspired me to make ‘She’s Gotta Have It.’ In ‘Rashomon,’ you have three people who witness a rape
and each gives their own opinion of what happened
In ‘She’s Gotta Have It,’ Nola Darling has three boyfriends who each see her in a different way
HIGHEST 2 LOWEST also stars A$AP Rocky, Ilfenesh Hadera, Jeffrey Wright, Dean Winters, John Douglas Thompson and rapper Ice Spice
Meanwhile, fans of the actor have taken to social media to express their dismay at the actor missing out on a Tony nomination
It is not the first time that Washington has been snubbed for an award this year, as many believed he should have been nominated for an Oscar for his performance in Gladiator II

but he then quickly went on his account to announce that it would play Cannes
“Highest 2 Lowest,” which will world premiere at Cannes on May 19
will be released theatrically on August 22
and is set to stream on September 5 via Apple TV
that’s only a two-week theatrical run for Spike’s latest film
Denzel Washington and A$AP Rocky star in the film, which is being described as a “reinterpretation” of Akira Kurosawa’s “High & Low.” Lee hired Alan Fox and Lee to write the screenplay
the central character is a shoe businessman
Lee’s film follows the executive as he becomes a victim of extortion when his chauffeur’s son is kidnapped by mistake and held for ransom
The film is set to be Lee and Washington’s fifth film together
They previously collaborated on “Malcolm X,” “Mo’ Better Blues,” “He Got Game,” and “Inside Man.”

David Lee Roth performed his first public concert in more than five years Saturday night at the M3 music festival in Columbia, Md. — a 75-minute set of classics by his old band Van Halen, according to Rolling Stone
in which he was accompanied by a band that included guitarist Al Estrada and four backing vocalists
According to a set list published by Ultimate Classic Rock, Roth, 70, opened the concert with Van Halen’s “Panama” and went on to play “You Really Got Me,” “Dance the Night Away,” “Runnin’ with the Devil,” “Jamie’s Cryin’,” “Hot for Teacher” and other Van Halen hits before closing with the band’s Hot 100-topping “Jump.”

the former Van Halen frontman tells the stories behind six of his songs
Ultimate Classic Rock reported that Roth joked onstage that the show marked “the end of my first retirement” — a reference to his announcement in late 2021 that he was calling it quits due to unspecified health issues
Ticketmaster listed more than a dozen upcoming shows by Roth starting July 22 at the California Mid-State Fair in Paso Robles
Roth’s most recent show before Saturday’s was a private 2023 corporate gig for Home Depot
he opened for Kiss on a tour that ended in March 2020 amid widespread cancellations and postponements related to the COVID-19 pandemic
The singer was scheduled to play a residency in Las Vegas in early 2022 but called off the shows before they happened
Saturday’s performance came as Sammy Hagar — who replaced Roth as Van Halen’s frontman in 1985 — has been talking publicly about Van Halen, whose founding guitarist, Eddie Van Halen, died in 2020.
Sammy Hagar and the Goo Goo Dolls all performed on Day 3 of the country music mega-festival in Indio
Last month, ahead of Hagar’s appearance at Indio’s Stagecoach festival, Hagar told The Times that he and Eddie had discussed a reunion before the guitarist’s death and that Eddie had asked him not to talk about the plans with Eddie’s brother
Hagar went on to tell Rolling Stone that he thinks Alex — who made no mention of Hagar in his 2024 memoir — is angry at him because “I’m out doing it … and he can’t.” After Stagecoach
Hagar launched a Vegas residency at the Park MGM
Van Halen’s final concert took place in October 2015 at the Hollywood Bowl — the second of two dates in the band’s Los Angeles hometown to wrap a tour featuring Roth on vocals and Eddie’s son Wolfgang Van Halen on bass.

Roth played his first full solo concert in more than five years Saturday night (May 3) at the 2025 edition of the M3 Rock Festival at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia
Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love (VAN HALEN song)16
Fan-filmed video of the performance can be seen below
"We've reached the end of my first retirement," David joked at one point during the show
Roth originally left VAN HALEN to pursue a solo career following the success of the band's album "1984"
but he returned for a stint in 1996 and then took over as VAN HALEN's frontman again from 2007 until 2020
although the band had not toured since 2015
Roth has been releasing solo versions of several VAN HALEN classics
2022 during a session at Henson Recording Studio in Hollywood
Joining Roth in the studio were Al Estrada on guitar
Ryan Wheeler on bass and Francis Valentino on drums
A total of 14 songs were recorded in two hours
The music and the vocals were tracked live with "no samples" and without the pitch-correction technology Auto-Tune
Roth canceled the remaining farewell shows he was set to play in Las Vegas after he vowed to retire from performing live
event organizers said the cancelations were made "due to unforeseen circumstances related to COVID and out of an abundance of caution for those working and attending the shows."
When Roth's Vegas residency was first announced
organizers promised "a changing set of 26 instantly recognizable songs
Roth postponed the final six shows of his Las Vegas residency due to the coronavirus pandemic that is spreading across the globe
Roth's last Vegas residency kicked off on January 8
2020 with a 15-song set that included 10 VAN HALEN classics and five songs from his solo career
Backing the singer were lead guitarist Al Estrada from the VAN HALEN tribute band ERUPTION
keyboardist Danny Wagner and drummer Mike Mussleman
Roth explained that he chose Vegas as the place to debut his new band because "this is where you come to celebrate and do the victory dance
In a February 2020 interview with StarTribune
Roth openly wondered whether his first tour since VAN HALEN completed its 2015 run of shows would be the last time he would perform
"I'm calling it 'The Last Tour'," he said at the time
"and then underneath it in parentheses: 'Unless It Isn't'
"But this kind of music requires the kind of energy that people in their 20s bring
You know what NFL stands for: Not For Long
I remember the days when we would stand around and say
'Let's go have a cigarette.' And that's what we did: Four guys having one cigarette

Dundee United’s lack of strength in depth is costing them as the season comes to it’s exciting conclusion
It was a tough day for the Tangerines at Hibs and you can see the players are toiling
I don’t think Jim Goodwin should have played Declan Gallagher
I’ve been in Gallagher’s position where you are carrying an injury but if the manager asks if you can play
I played injured for Dundee United before and most of the time you scramble through it
You have to rely on your team-mates so you don’t get exposed
Unfortunately for him he came up against a team who are really sharp and on their game
On another day he probably cruises through the game and nobody really notices he’s struggling
It says a lot about his character that he was willing to step up when his team needed him
another player might have just said they were injured and turned their back
He obviously wanted to be out there and took the risk despite not being 100% fit
Kevin Holt gone and Ross Graham injured we are seeing the squad being stretched
I would have liked to see Sam Cleall-Harding get a chance
There were changes elsewhere but they didn’t really work and shows United are behind the likes of Hibs when it comes to squad strength
tiredness is beginning to show after a long
But there is still a huge amount up for grabs
St Mirren this Saturday is the biggest match of the season
Third is beyond them now but fourth is still there
Get a result against the Buddies – just don’t lose that one – and they put pressure on Aberdeen
The Dons have Rangers and then Celtic in their two games before coming to Tannadice on the final day
That’s the hardest two games of the season
If they manage to get points out of those two then you just have to say fair enough
they would deserve to finish ahead of United
But if the Tangerines can make sure that the final day of the season is a decider then they will take that right now
They do need to secure fifth place first of all
And St Mirren are coming up the road in form
Hibs and Aberdeen but the Buddies have been quietly going about their business
doing what they do and have a chance of catching United again
But I like the noises coming from the players. Will Ferry showed how annoyed they are
The last thing United want is for this season to fizzle out
What will get them through is their togetherness
That’s been the asset at Tannadice this season
they battle for each other and react well to disappointment

marking his first live performances in five years
The former Van Halen singer will begin touring on July 31st in Hollywood
The famed showman had previously announced a single gig on September 12th in Saratoga
It comes off the back of Roth’s return to the stage on May 3rd at M3 Festival in Maryland, where he performed for the first time in five years
He was joined on stage by guitarist Al Estrada
drummer Francis Valentino and a keyboard player
marking his first live show since last opening for Kiss in March 2020
Roth announced his retirement from performing and touring in 2021, shortly before he was set to commence a residency in Las Vegas in 2022, which was subsequently cancelled due to unspecified health issues. The singer joked during his performance at M3 Festival over the weekend: “We’ve reached the end of my first retirement
Tickets for his 12 newly announced shows will be available for pre-sale at 10am ET on May 6th
before going on general sale on May 9th at 10am ET via Ticketmaster
There are lots of reasons to be excited about Spike Lee’s upcoming movie. Lee’s new film Highest 2 Lowest reunites Lee with his old collaborator Denzel Washington, and it’s a remake of the Akira Kurosawa classic High & Low. The former Van Halen singer plays his first solo show in five years at the M3 Rock Festival in Columbia
David Lee Roth has played his first live show in five years. The former Van Halen frontman performed a 16-song set at the 19,000-capacity Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia
the second night of this year's long-running M3 Rock Festival
Roth's setlist was entirely made up of songs originally recorded during his first stint with Van Halen, with no room for his solo output or – perhaps less surprisingly – from Van Halen's 2012 Roth reunion album A Different Kind of Truth
famously covered by Van Halen on their debut album
Full setlist and fan-shot video of the full concert below
Roth's previous show was at the United Supermarkets Arena in Lubbock
but fans won't have to wait another five years for a show as the singer has another already booked: On September 12 he'll perform at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga
as part of the venue's annual Summer Concert Series

Lee’s film is a “reinterpretation” of Kurosawa Akira’s 1963 masterpiece High and Low
When the Cannes lineup was announced last month, one of the more noticeable omissions was Spike Lee’s latest joint, Highest 2 Lowest, a “reinterpretation” of Kurosawa Akira’s 1963 masterpiece High and Low
Lee took to his Instagram to confirm that that the film would indeed premiere at the festival
and alongside the final Mission: Impossible film
the film will be in select theaters August 22
before landing on Apple TV+ two short weeks later
The film is Lee and Denzel Washington’s fifth collaboration, and their first one in 20 years. They previously collaborated on Mo’ Better Blues, Malcolm X, He Got Game, and Inside Man
The logline reads: “When a titan music mogul (Denzel Washington)
widely known as having the ‘best ears in the business,’ is targeted with a ransom plot
he is jammed up in a life-or-death moral dilemma
Brothers Denzel Washington and Spike Lee reunite for the 5th in their long working relationship for a reinterpretation of the great filmmaker Akira Kurosawa’s crime thriller High and Low
now played out on the mean streets of modern day New York City.”
Highest 2 Lowest also stars Jeffrey Wright

Lee Ashcroft pipped defensive team-mate Dan O’Reilly in the McCrea Financial Services Player of the Month voting to pick up April’s prize
Dan was ahead in the X vote however centre back Lee had the stronger performance on the club’s website and when the scores were combined the number 23 was the winner ahead of Dan as well as Robbie Crawford and Luke McBeth
It is a first Award success for Lee this season and his cause was no doubt helped by a string of brave defensive blocks in last Friday’s battling win over a Falkirk side looking to clinch the Championship title
Ahead of preparing for Friday night’s crunch game at Livingston
summer signing Lee said: “I am delighted to win this award and would like to thank everyone who voted for me
There was strong competition from my team-mates particularly following the win over Falkirk.”
We played really well in the first half but when it got to half-time
we knew it was going to be a tough 45 minutes in the second half.”
“We gave it everything we had to get a result
and we will need the same approach at Livingston
We need to go there and get a positive result and get into the play-offs.”
As part of the Player of the Month Award, McCrea Financial Services provide a charitable donation with Lee asking for Homeless Project Scotland to be the beneficiary on his behalf
Lee said: “I support a number of charities however on this occasion I would like Homeless Project Scotland to benefit
and I would like to thank McCrea Financial Services for allowing me to do that.”

Dundee’s Achilles heel came back to bite them on the backside against Motherwell
You can point to defensive errors but the balance is all off between defence and attack
Clark Robertson gets the header wrong for the winner but he’s cleared it initially into midfield and Dundee have ended up with everyone way out on the right
The Steelmen get it and work the ball quite easily out to the wing
Taking off Antonio Portales and then Ryan Astley for attacking players meant they lost any control of the game
Bring on Scott Fraser and Charlie Reilly by all means but do it like for like
I completely understand Tony Docherty’s frustration about the second Portales goal
Yes, Robertson was offside but did he actually interfere
For me he wasn’t really doing anything and didn’t affect the defender clearing
Technically he’s offside but it is a grey area in the laws
I don’t think there would have been a big outcry if they had
They have a complaint to make about the VAR decision but they were guilty of changing too much late on and it left them wide open
Now they have left themselves with work to do

The UKEB is the UK’s national standard setter for international accounting standards
of new or amended standards issued by the International Accounting Standards Board
part of the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) Foundation
Companies report using these standards to provide robust and comparable financial information
The UKEB is committed to ensuring that the interests of the UK corporate reporters are effectively represented to ensure standards meet the needs of UK companies and investors
Paul Lee brings extensive corporate reporting experience from his roles as Head of Stewardship and Sustainable Investment Strategy at Redington and Member of the Committee of Reference for the Premier Miton Ethical Fund
Paul is also currently a Non-Executive Member and one of the founding members of UKEB

Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said:
UKEB provide an invaluable service in scrutinising and adopting international accounting standards and representing our largest companies on an international stage
Paul will bring strong leadership to UKEB as Chair and his extensive knowledge of corporate reporting standards as one of the Board’s founding members will be vital in driving growth in the sector and economy as part of our Plan for Change
I would like to thank Pauline for her work over the past five years and look forward to continuing work with Paul
Incoming Chair of the UK Endorsement Board
As an investor I understand the importance of international accounting standards and the role they play in supporting UK economic growth and inward investment
I also recognise the unnecessary burden that might be placed on companies if standards don’t achieve the right balance
I was pleased to join the UKEB Board four years ago because I firmly believed that the organisation’s remit
to act as the voice of UK stakeholders in the development of comparable and proportionate standards that add value to the UK long-term public good
forms part of the core foundation of a strong and growing UK economy
The UKEB has been robustly effective under Pauline’s thoughtful leadership
and I feel privileged to have been given the opportunity to lead the Board
I’m looking forward to getting started and deepening my work with our excellent Board and Secretariat
supporting and balancing the needs of all UK stakeholders as we navigate those challenges

The Killers paid tribute to The Killer, and rock music had its spotlight moment as the second day of the second annual RiverBeat Music Festival in Memphis came to a close
Sandwiched in between hip-hop futurist Missy Elliott’s opening night performance, and what’s expected to be big a finale from R&B showman Anderon .Paak
May 3's headlining turn from The Killers found the multiplatinum Las Vegas group as the only big name rock band at the top of the RiverBeat bill
As the wind kicked up and temperatures cooled down on the riverfront at Tom Lee Park, fans flocked to the Orion Financial Stage to catch The Killers’ first Memphis show since their last appearance at Tom Lee in 2019, part of the old Beale Street Music Festival
RIVERBEAT IN MEMPHIS: Public Enemy's Flavor Flav and Chuck D talk peace, unity & praise for Memphis at RiverBeat
The Killers — featuring singer Brandon Flowers
bassist Mark Stoermer and drummer Ronnie Vannucci — have earned a reputation for tailoring their sets and offering special surprises specific to the locality
The first hints that something unique might be in store for Memphis came as the lights dimmed and the PA system began playing “Also sprach Zarathustra,” by Richard Strauss
the classical piece that served as the theme to Stanley Kubrick’s "2001: A Space Odyssey" but is perhaps best known as Elvis Presley’s walk-on music in the ‘70s
As the song reached its rumbling climax, frontman Flowers — outfitted in a turquoise suit — emerged just as the band tore into a surprise cover of a song by another Memphis legend, playing the Jerry Lee Lewis’ classic “Great Balls of Fire.”
It was a neat gesture that paid homage to local history, with the 1957 hit having been recorded just a couple miles away at Sun Records
connecting the new RiverBeat fest with the spirit of the old Beale Street Music Fest
an event where Lewis himself was a perennial performer
Though The Killers’ signature synth-pop style hardly suggested that louche boogie-woogie would be in their wheelhouse
they delivered a fairly thrilling rendition of the song
with Flowers offering a delightfully leering impression of Lewis (without kicking away the piano bench or berating the band
“That was a nod to your hometown,” said Flowers as the song ended
“and this is a nod to ours.” With that The Killers blazed into the opening of “Somebody Told Me,” and for the next 70 minutes delivered a non-stop set of hits and album cuts from across the band’s nearly 25-year career
RIVERBEAT 2025: RiverBeat delivers the blues with all-star Mississippi musicians including Bobby Rush
I’ll be your host this evening — let me know if I can help in any way,” Flowers told the crowd early on
I believe you people ordered some rock ‘n’ roll tonight
the band’s performance — which was highlighted by versions of “Jenny Was a Friend of Mine,” “When We Were Young” “Smile Like You Mean It” and “Shot at Night,” among others — soared from start to finish
While rock’s place isn’t what it used to be — either in the culture at large or at a Memphis’ riverfront festival — at least on this night
The Killers offered a reminder of just how engaging a great rock 'n' roll band could be

Even though we’ve been told A$AP Rocky is the star of the film, Denzel is the narrator—addressing the themes of capitalism’s crush ported from Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 source material—and fulcrum of the teaser (including what looks like the mandatory trademark double dolly shot, with Denzel bathed in red light). As we anticipated
his character’s work as a record executive appears to play a prominent role in the film
swaggering through a corporate office lined with framed platinum records and walking the aforementioned Brooklyn Bridge with what looks like chunky gold Beats headphones on
He’s in full Denzel command here—with echoes of John Creasy
and even Malcolm Little—as a slick and chatty high powered executive
Lee has been on a late period run over the last decade
but by re-teaming with Denzel and returning to New York
this has the looks of the classic Spike Lee Joint we’ve been clamoring for
While I’d love to be taking in the film’s premiere at Cannes in two weeks
I’ll likely watch Highest 2 Lowest as most of the obsessive nerds who have read this entire primer will: in a packed independent theater on its August 22nd release
The final line in the trailer is Denzel asking
“Can you handle it?” And if he’s referring to the interminable time I am going to have to wait to see this film

Kathie Lee Gifford is set to become a grandmother again as her son Cody is expecting his third child with wife Erika.
The 71-year-old American TV show host, actress, and singer-songwriter’s daughter-in-law posted a video on her Instagram to announce the news of her third pregnancy.
In the video, the 35-year-old Cody, a film producer, and Erike can be seen spending time together with their two little sons, Frank, 2, and Ford, 17 months.
Towards the end of the video, which had clips from the family’s day out, someone opened a box of white cake that says, "Baby #3 Loading."
Erike also scribbled a caption under her video that read, "Gifford, party of cinco."
“Our little blessing on the way was prayed for, dreamed of, and is already so deeply loved. 20 weeks in and we can’t wait to meet the newest member of our crew," she added.
For the unversed, the former Today host, Kathie, conversed with PEOPLE magazine in July last year and reflected on the special bond she shares with her grandsons.
"I'm just so grateful for them. They're precious and they give me a purpose to get up every morning when everything else is just not the same for me. Life is just so different and I just try to find joy when I can find it,” she said.
"And the only place I can really find it is in the Word of God and in my grandsons," the Sharknado 5: Global Swarming star added.
It is pertinent to mention that Kathie Lee Gifford is also a bubbe to her daughter Cassidy's son Finn.
Luke Hyde: His mother Lily sent her thanks to those whom tried to help him, especially the gardaí, paramedics, air corps, and fire service.
after he and another man went swimming in the northern channel of the River Lee at Pope’s Quay
The 34-year-old got into difficulties and a major search and recovery operation was launched
During his funeral Mass in the North Cathedral
Fr Marius O’Reilly said: “Luke was here for a lot shorter than anyone would have expected but he was a gift to this world and we bring forward with us the memories that we have had with Luke and we thank God because Luke was unique to this world.
"There was never anyone like him nor will there ever be anyone like him
He had something unique to contribute to this world that nobody else could."
"But I have been hearing a lot about him over these last number of days and some of the things which really struck me about Luke was that he didn’t have it easy in life
He lost his father at a young age and then he lost his brother Brian and these had a big impact on him at such a young age too.
which everyone seems to talk about is how gentle a person he was and that he had a loving
caring nature and I even heard how he would love the animals
"That is not something you would hear about too often
[He was] very much someone as well who would reach out to people and try to help other people
He had his own troubles and difficulties but he would think of other people as well so he is a great lesson to all of us in that sense."
His mother Lily led the readings. On Friday, she had spoken of her heartbreak after people at the scene of his drowning filmed and livestreamed the incident instead of trying to help her son
The actions have also been condemned by Taoiseach Micheál Martin
Fr O’Reilly said: “Lily asked me as well in a special way to thank those who tried to help Luke
fire service and all the people who have been so generous and so kind with their support and their words in particular.”

Commemorating 100 years since the War of Independence
Kathryn Bigelow’s tale of a rookie officer forced to take justice into her own hands is deceptively subversive – and delightfully sleazy
Bigelow had already taken a scalpel to the action film in her wonderfully sleazy Blue Steel
female-fronted thriller that investigates the thorny conflation of power and gender in the male-dominated cop genre
a rookie NYPD officer fresh out of the academy who miraculously thwarts an armed robbery on her first night out on patrol
When the suspect’s weapon mysteriously vanishes from the crime scene
she’s shunned by her colleagues and suspended by the force for allegedly killing an unarmed man
one of the hostages she rescues that evening
Wall Street money man Eugene (a perfectly slimy Ron Silver)
becomes dangerously obsessed with his saviour and starts to commit his own murders
with Megan soon trapped in a cat-and-mouse game against a psychotic killer
Against the grimy surfaces of New York City
the film tracks the frustrating ways that Megan’s efforts to apprehend Eugene are hindered by the very same systems she has taken an oath to uphold and protect
Her male superiors and fellow officers dismiss her claims of both personal abuse and professional innocence at every turn
It’s not until she takes advantage of the liberties afforded her by her badge – much like Dirty Harry did back in 1971 – that Megan wrests justice into her own hands
Sign up for the fun stuff with our rundown of must-reads, pop culture and tips for the weekend, every Saturday morning
The film’s gaze is thrillingly romantic: its opening credits
are overlaid on top of slow-motion footage of a service revolver being cleaned and reloaded
ingeniously shot with all the hazy festishisation of a softcore porno that transforms the barrel of a gun into a phallic object
The same principle applies to the many scenes of Megan donning her deep-blue police attire; Bigelow’s camera leers at every buckle fastened
as if its subject were a masked vigilante triumphantly suiting up for a night of extrajudicial vengeance
View image in fullscreen‘The disruption of a woman dressed in a uniform that so frequently signifies masculine authority’ … Curtis in NYPD blues
Photograph: Lightning/Kobal/Rex/ShutterstockAll these images form Blue Steel’s central concern: the disruption of a woman dressed in a uniform that so frequently signifies masculine authority
detests the profession his daughter has chosen
But what initially seems like a baby boomer-era misalignment of gender expectations soon reveals itself to be the result of something much more sinister
as an abusive misogynist now realises there’s one fewer person in his life he can victimise
The point is only further accentuated by the savvy casting of Curtis: cinema’s most recognisable final girl once again forced to rely on no one but herself in order to survive
What could have easily been a simplistic “girls can be cops too” tale is instead complicated by Bigelow’s clever manipulation of genre cliches
her protagonist engages in a reckless and chaotic gunfight across crowded streets and subway platforms
bending the troubling politics of state-sanctioned power to her own personal interests regardless of how morally justified they may be
“Why would you want to become a cop?” one of Megan’s male partners bluntly asks her early in the film
in fact.” She turns to him and drily responds
Blue Steel is streaming on Stan in Australia, Starz in the US, and available to rent in the UK. For more recommendations of what to stream in Australia, click here
Spike Lee just unveiled the teaser trailer for his highly anticipated new film
the teaser clip showcased what looks to be an action-packed blockbuster with appearances from Denzel Washington
“I know you have been waiting H**LA LONG,” wrote Lee on Instagram
“Here is [the] teaser trailer (finally) for [the] fifth return of [Denzel] and Lee — HIGHEST 2 LOWEST
And [that’s the] Washingtons/Lees’ family truth
Straight up.” That caption alone let audiences know that this production is personal
As explained in GQ, the collaboration reimagines Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low with a modern New York twist
Washington plays a revered music mogul known for having “the best ears in the business,” whose entire empire is thrown into crisis after a kidnapping forces him to make a moral decision
a 1963 noir thriller based on King’s Ransom by Evan Hunter (published under his pseudonym
focused on a shoe executive forced to choose between financial ruin and a child’s life
sets his version in the world of contemporary Hip Hop
Other details about the plot remain mostly under wraps
but hints from set photos and previous interviews suggest a layered story about class struggle
loyalty and survival in an unforgiving system
a character many speculate is based on the original film’s antagonist — a man whose career has faltered and who seeks revenge against the executive he blames for his downfall
One striking image from the teaser showed Rocky in a prison jumpsuit
signaling the intensity of his role and the stakes at play
Highest 2 Lowest is already one of the most anticipated films of 2025
The Cannes premiere date is no coincidence: It marks the 36th anniversary of Lee’s breakthrough film
Although Highest 2 Lowest is not competing
the significance of its debut on that date pretty much confirms the film’s symbolic weight in Lee’s career arc
he brought home the Grand Prix for BlacKkKlansman
The teaser’s release also came at a moment when Spike Lee is actively championing Black filmmakers. In March, he praised Sinners as “the greatest experience” he’s had in a theater in years
“My brother Ryan Coogler invited me to experience his new film..
“His magnificent artistry as a storyteller [is] on [another] level..
I haven’t felt this way in a movie theatre in a minute.” That same energy and reverence for Black storytelling is clearly coursing through Highest 2 Lowest
and Taylor Swift producer was the guitarist in indie punk band Compulsion during the Britpop heyday
Jacknife Lee has described Britpop as the “Make America Great Again of its day”
dismissing it as “xenophobic shite” and “misogynist”
The Irish producer is known for his work alongside some of the biggest names in music, having worked on major albums by U2, R.E.M., Taylor Swift, Snow Patrol, The Killers and One Direction
he was the guitarist in the cult Dublin indie-punk group Compulsion
That band have just re-released their two studio albums ‘Comforter’ (1994) and ‘The Future Is Medium’ (1996) on Friday (May 2) via One Little Independent Records
Speaking to Louder Sound in support of the re-releases
Lee has reflected on the time period in which Compulsion’s music was originally released
an era in British and Irish guitar music that was dominated by the Britpop movement
Asked what it was that he did not appreciate about Britpop, Lee responded: “It was such a nostalgic look back at an older England, like what people saw as ‘glory days’ for Britain, the 1966 World Cup, The Kinks, the Small Faces
looking back to when Britain had colonies and they didn’t fucking complain.”
“And Britpop was the Make America Great Again of its day
it was just fucking lads asking for tits out
Explaining how he saw Compulsion as standing in opposition to that
he continued: “We were a bit right on
with a very kind of Marxist outlook on things
We were raging fucking lunatics with amphetamines
So there was no way we were going to join any of those groups
Our attitude at the time was ‘Fuck England
And with the American post-grunge/punk thing
Lee went on to pursue a solo recording career
releasing his first album ‘Muy Rico’ in 1998
followed by ‘Punk Rock High Roller’ in 2001 and a self-titled third album in 2007
that has seen Lee achieve his greatest success
Some of his early producer credits include Snow Patrol’s 2003 breakout album ‘Final Straw’ and U2’s ‘How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb’ in 2004
albums ‘Accelerate’ (2008) and ‘Collapse Into Now’ (2011)
