It’s official, Letchworth is bee-friendly! The town – the world’s first garden city – has been crowned by the Bee Friendly Trust
Applying for the Bee Friendly Award was initiated and spearheaded by our grounds maintenance contractor John O’Conner
and supported by the wonderful local community
It has involved establishing a bee corridor
residents growing bee friendly plants in their gardens
identifying new areas for wildflower growth and holding a community event to raise awareness of the importance of bees – which essentially keeps us and our world healthy
Developing a corridor around the town – taking in places such as Howard Park
The Wynd and the UK’s first roundabout – included planting nectar-rich flowers to help them buzz around more easily and increase their numbers
schools and community groups also got on board.
said: “This has been such a lovely community project which wouldn’t have happened without John O’Conner taking it forward and local people playing their part
so a big thanks goes to everyone who’s been involved
“Bees and other pollinators like butterflies and hoverflies are fundamental to our ecosystem and we cannot afford to lose them – 1 in 3 mouthfuls of food eaten worldwide is dependent on pollinators
from your morning cup of coffee to a lovely juicy apple!”
added: “We are so proud to have been part of this amazing initiative
They now have access to food and shelter and can move more freely around the local area
This will give them all they need to thrive and the town will be all the better for it
We hope to use Letchworth as a model for other towns and villages in North Herts.”
The Bee Friendly Trust added: “Our mission is to create habitats for honey bees and all pollinators to thrive.”
The council has allocated £10,000 to develop more bee corridors in North Herts

Native Harrow – Devin Teul and Stephen Harms – are undertaking a short UK tour in support of their latest album “Divided Kind” playing a short run of record shop in-store appearances
hence tonight’s appearance at Davids Music in Letchworth
helped by being attached to the larger David’s Books and David’s Cafe
an ever-growing vinyl section and a reasonable number of books and some musical instruments – all but the last are represented as both new and second-hand selections
A good crowd had filled the available space by 6:30 when the appearance was timed to start
with Native Harrow starting off their selection from “Divided Kind” with Harms initially on bass and Teul on acoustic guitar although both would switch to electric at various points
The latest album is a multi-layered affair with a little more of a soulful feel to the songwriting and arrangements than that of their last release “Old Kind Of Magic”
shape which makes a strong case for an album capturing these versions
Although the pair have relocated to Philadelphia
the songs on “Divided Kind” were written during their time in the South of England with ‘Borrowing Time‘ drawing on a favourite walk which gave the impression with frequent repetition of reliving the same moments for free
The raunchier vocals of ‘Not The Woman‘ drew on an early unused song from Treul’s archive which was deemed to be a good fit with the rest of the album
and it does give a contrast to a more intimately soulful song like ‘I Wanna Thank You’ an unashamedly “very much in love” love song
After a main set of seven songs from the new album
for an “encore” Native Harrow went back beyond what they’d played at a previous appearance in-store
playing ‘Something You Have‘ from “Happier Now” which Teul described as being their first album – despite there being albums prior to it – since it was the real start of finding their true sound which has carried on through the subsequent albums
It is a glorious sound – a blend of the more folk-leaning parts of Seventies Fleetwood Mac
Philly soul and Laurel Canyon confessional singer-songwriter
and this short set did what it should – it sold some albums and left the listener wanting more…and fingers-crossed there should be a full tour next year

Customers travelling through Letchworth Garden City station can look forward to seeing a fresh set of flowers this year after cubs from a local pack rolled up their sleeves to plant 400 bulbs
Twenty-four green-fingered children from the 4th Letchworth Cubs braved the rain to plant the bulbs
which will help improve the look and feel of the station
The activity forms part of the national Platforms for Change programme the group has recently signed up to

said: “It was brilliant to involve the 4th Letchworth Cubs in this project and I’m sure customers will be pleased to see some beautiful new flowers at our station
We hope the group learnt some valuable gardening skills and we look forward to welcoming them back for future days out on the railway.”
The youngsters were supported by GTR and Meldreth
Shepreth and Foxton Community Rail Partnership colleagues on 22 May
the group also had time to create a few bug hotels and helped tidy up the station
said: “The Cubs had a fantastic day planting bulbs
creating bug hotels for the station fencing and picking up litter
Platforms for Change is a great way of getting young people involved with the local community and we’re excited to keep learning more about the railway through the programme.”
The bulb planting also coincided with Community Rail Week
which focuses on encouraging and enabling more people to use the train as a sustainable

has welcomed a brand-new Nisa convenience store
Owned by local entrepreneur Monty Chandarana
the store represents a significant investment in the area
marking a complete transformation to create a vibrant community destination
His family’s legacy began in 1987 when his parents opened The Grange Wine Store
which remains a pillar of the local area after its own refurbishment in 2020
Chandarana continues to operate The Grange and Jackmans Wine Stores whilst also owning the Letchworth Laundrette and Southfields Salon on the same parade
my family has been committed to serving the Letchworth community
and this new Nisa store is an extension of that commitment,” said Chandarana
“The Parade has always been the heart of this neighbourhood
and our goal with this renovation is to provide a top-quality shopping experience that meets the needs of local families
The new Nisa store has undergone a complete renovation
There’s a clear emphasis on sustainability in-store with energy efficient refrigeration and lighting throughout
the store will offer an expanded range of groceries
complemented by an in-store bakery and a dedicated food-to-go section
The food-to-go offering includes fresh coffee
and Rollover hot dogs – perfect for busy customers seeking quick
Chandarana’s decision to move into the convenience sector was driven by the opportunity to provide a much-needed service in the area
“This is more than just a shop; it’s a community hub,” he explained
“We’re addressing gaps in the local market by offering fresh groceries
and a welcoming space where people can connect.”
the store will actively support the community via the Making a Difference Locally (MADL) charity
a percentage of sales will be donated to MADL
funding initiatives and causes that benefit the local area
“Giving back is central to what we do,” said Chandarana
“We want this store to be more than just a place to shop—we want it to be a force for good in Letchworth.”
The store’s grand opening on Saturday saw customers enjoying special promotions
and exclusive offers to celebrate the launch
“This parade is like a little town within the town
with 8,000 to 10,000 people who all know and support each other,” said Chandarana
and now the children of my childhood friends are coming into our stores
“This Nisa store is our way of giving back and ensuring everyone has access to a high-quality

Printed Easy has continued its 2024 mega-spend with a further investment in a raft of post-press devices
A new high-speed B1 Autobond laminator arrived at the firm’s Letchworth Garden City factory today (7 October)
The fast turnaround web-to-print specialist has also refreshed its Multigraf line-up with four new finishing devices from Duplo
Two older Multigraf units have been taken out
with the additions taking the firm’s Multigraf firepower up to seven
Zünd UK – located next door – is putting in a cutting table that will give the business additional flexibility
Managing director Jon Lancaster explained: “We bought it primarily for cutting greyboard covers – front and back covers and spines for hardbacks – because cutting them on the guillotine is not good for the blade
we can also upgrade our large-format offering and use the Zünd for that as well.”
The new cutting table has been configured with three heads and will arrive later this month
Printed Easy went live with its on-demand casebound book service at the end of August
Lancaster said the new offering was “doing well” and the overall business had a record month in September
Its Canon SRA3-plus varioPrint iX3200 sheetfed inkjet press also arrived at the firm's 4,000sqm factory last week
and is expected to be fully up and running by the end of the month
“There’s a lot of integration and profiling to do for that machine
and it will also change how things are routed around the factory,” Lancaster noted
“We’re also going to add some new options to the website for the Canon as well
so we can offer commercial clients and customers such as photographers a different way of printing.”
Printed Easy also added a similar extended gamut function for work produced on its Durst inkjet label press, installed earlier this year
The firm’s Smyth DX-80 thread sewing device
is also now operational and allows the business to offer that as an option on hardback
The latest kit represents an investment of around £400,000 for the 57-employee firm
which is expecting to achieve sales of £15.7m this year
At Drupa Printed Easy also signed up for Canon's new B2 inkjet
and is likely to become one of the first installations in Europe when the press ships.
