Pupils and staff at Lochgelly South Primary School have been using first few weeks of the school term to get settled into their newly refurbished building after a £7m investment by Fife Council
Investigation work prior to installing a new modular unit on the grounds of the school showed a historic mine working beneath the grounds and part of the school
putting the building at risk of subsidence in the future
Pupils temporarily moved to St Kenneth's primary school after the summer holidays in 2023 and major remedial ground consolidation work
was undertaking to secure the long term future of the school
The work was undertaken by the council's building services teams
The building was stripped back to bare walls
with rotten timbers and damp plaster being removed throughout the school
After the ground consolidation work was completed
the interior of the building underwent a full refurbishment and modernisation
The roof and guttering have been repaired and innovative sustainable drainage systems (SUDS) installed
along with fully external painting of the school
said: “This was a unique and challenging project for us
and the first time this kind of ground consolidation work has been undertaken in Fife
Restoring the school's ornate original fixtures
was a particularly challenge but one our in-house teams and local contractors were happy to take on to deliver a facility the young people and staff can enjoy learning and working in for many years to come”
Fife Council's spokesperson for building services
said: "Many children have started their learning at Lochgelly South over the years and I'm delighted that we've been able to secure the building's future for generations to come
"I'm proud that the many of the skills needed to undertake such a challenging project are held within our own workforce or local businesses"
said: "Everyone was very excited to get back into our school after a year away
We're very grateful to St Kenneth's for letting us share their school while the work was carried out and to everyone involved in bringing about some fantastic improvements as part of the project
the school still feels very familiar! We're looking forward to many years of learning ahead of us."

Fife firefighters are bracing themselves for fresh cuts
18 months after four appliances were stripped from the region
Lochgelly staff fear their rope rescue unit is at risk as the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) considers where to base its remaining resources
An £11 million budget cut in 2023 saw appliances withdrawn from Methil
The Kirkcaldy height appliance was also cut
The fire service said then the changes were temporary and would be reviewed
Now, the Lochgelly firefighters have now been told one of their appliances could be permanently moved to replace one of those lost at either Glenrothes or Methil
there would not be enough people to crew the rope rescue team
The proposal is one of several mooted for fire stations across Scotland
And a major public consultation is planned this summer before a final decision is made
But one concerned firefighter told The Courier: “Resources are being cut and they’re robbing Peter to pay Paul
“It’s not good and there’s no doubt people will be put in danger if this goes ahead.”
The Lochgelly station has one of four specialist rope rescue teams in Scotland
It is crewed by nine firefighters and helps rescue people from high buildings
it mobilised 62 times and it has been called out 16 times already in 2025
The nearest alternative teams are based at Edinburgh
The Fife firefighter added: “This is another cut and we want to stop it
“It’s a false economy – the gaps are still there
we’re understaffed and turnout times are increasing.”
The firefighters are already taking their concerns to MPs and MSPs and have launched a petition.
The Labour MP said “Recent fires near Lochgelly itself should be ample reason enough to convince anyone that cutting emergency services in this area would be ill-conceived
It could also put a strain on other stations in Fife
“Area Commander Lee Turnock has offered me a meeting and I’ll be using that opportunity to raise urgent concerns.”
Mr Turnock says the SFRS review aims to ensure staff
stations and appliances match risk and demand across Scotland
He added: “We are now in the final stage of an options appraisal process which will lead to a public consultation exercise
“This has been a long and detailed programme of work
with input from staff across Scotland and the communities we serve
to develop a shortlist of potential options for change
“We continue to scrutinise and refine this shortlist but at this time they remain only potential options for consideration.”
Three people have been charged after armed police descended on a Fife village
Officers were called to a disturbance in Henderson Street
were traced to an address in Burnside Place
They were arrested and charged in connection
The nature of the disturbance has not been confirmed
An eyewitness in Kelty described the scene to The Courier
“I was sitting in the living room when I saw the first police car pull in across the street from me
so I went out on the veranda and instantly saw two more vehicles coming from the main street
“They [police] pulled into my street fast and
“The people they were after didn’t put up any fight; they just went willingly.”
A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “Around 11.10am on Thursday
2025 we received a report of a disturbance in Henderson Street
Kelty and they were arrested and charged in connection
“They are due to appear at Dunfermline Sheriff Court on Friday
