A huge wildfire has ripped through moorland with thick plumes of smoke seen for miles - with firefighters concerned the fire could spread towards nearby Macclesfield Forest
Dramatic video footage shows heavy smoke billowing from land - which is around 400 football pitches big - near to the Errwood Reservoir
Helicopters are being used to fight the fires
At its height 10 fire engines from Derbyshire and Cheshire Fire and Rescue Services were dealing with the blaze which broke out around 11:30am on Wednesday 30 April
Firefighters remain on the scene with specialist equipment and are warning people to stay away from the Goyt Valley area
from Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "The fire has now reached around 320 hectares
it's occured on the moorland and the forestry and plantation
He continued: "We've got indications that it is moving towards the forest
It does work for us on this occasion because we've got a downward slope and we have got crews who can get on top of it
"However a slight wind direction change and we could be fighting a fire in another area."
Group Manager at Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service spoke to ITV Granada's Rob Smith
United Utilities have also been involved in the emergency response
County Business Leader for Manchester at United Utilities said: “To contain the fire and prioritise public and environmental safety
we have provided a helicopter with the means to transport water from our local reservoirs to help extinguish the flames and minimise damage."
"We have also supplied three of our water tankers to help keep water flowing to fire engines
and experts from our catchment teams are doing all they can to minimise the environmental impact to both the peatlands
A road closure has also been put in place near to the Errwood Hall car park
while the historic Cat and Fiddle - a former pub which is now a distillery - also closed
asking customers to "stay at home" on social media
we had a team meeting and started distilling - but then at around 10am just over in the valley one of my colleagues spotted some smoke
"It looked like a little bit more than a barbecue so he called the fire services
and from there we’ve watched it unfold throughout the day."
Smoke could be seen for miles across Greater Manchester
But I can’t thank the fire and rescue service enough really
they’ve been here and reassured us and got on with what they do
"You look one way and it’s beautiful blue skies… but you look over Derbyshire and it’s full of smoke
fire crews and helicopters… it’s been a strange old day."
Marketing Manager at Forest Distillery said: "It started with a couple of fire engines
"The Cat & Fiddle was built in 1813
we were right on the brink of what could have been devastation
the barns are full of alcohol and ethanol."
with drivers urged to 'proceed with caution' while crews work nearby.A Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "Please can we ask that people proceed with caution near the Cat and Fiddle pub on the A54."Firefighters are currently having to cross the road to access the moorland to fight the fire in the Goyt Valley and there are a large number of emergency vehicles using this area as a base
Almost all firefighters were stood down from the scene late at 9.45pm due to falling light
but at least eight crews have returned to help control the fire
Nearby residents are still being asked to keep their doors and windows closed

With games running out, the Lions’ task this weekend is to seal a play-off place. They can do just that with league champions Macclesfield visiting Nethermoor, writes Scott Kelly
Match sponsored by: Terrafirma | Match Ball sponsored by: Calum Fraser’s Stag Do
The Silkmen haven’t lost in any of their five visits to Nethermoor
with their first being a 3-0 victory during the 15/16 season in the National League
The last of which was a 2-1 win back in January 2024
Guiseley have only won one league clash against this opposition
a 2-1 result at the now Leasing.com Stadium
Some of this of course was under their former guise of Macclesfield Town
They have met three times as Macclesfield FC
with the Silkmen winning every game and holding a 10-3 aggregate score
Guiseley were made to settle for a point at Warrington Rylands after taking a hotly disputed early lead
Adriano Moke’s ninth minute close-range strike was initially ruled out for offside but his goal via Will Longbottom’s pinpoint cross was given following consultation between the officials
It was Moke’s first goal for the club after making 43 appearances this season
But Rylands found an equaliser in the box via Matthew Regan having won a free kick midway through the second half
Both sides fought hard to win the game later on but neither could find a match clinching goal
We got in front and didn’t really capitalise on that enough
Mark Bower felt the side didn’t take enough of his sides chances when they came their way and felt a draw was the fair result
He went over and sorted it out and came to the correct decision”
Bower was bemused that Adriano Moke’s goal was disallowed at first but was pleased that the referee came to the correct decision and awarded Moke his first goal of the season
we want to finish in those top three positions”
With his side close to clinching a play-off place
Bower wants to clinch a position in the top three
who have had a great first season in the NPL and sit just two points behind the Lions heading into this weekend
Jack Emmett returned to the bench at the weekend and despite not coming in
should be fit this weekend after recovering from an achilles problem
Jake Lawlor also returned at Warrington after sitting out the Matlock game and is okay to play once again
Jamie Spencer and Joe Ackroyd will be pushing for starts after all coming off the bench last weekend
With Lucas Odunston likely out for the season
he remains on the treatment table with Jordan Thewlis and Jake Wright
What isn’t in doubt is that Macclesfield will be a National League North side next season
Last season they were outdone by the exploits of Radcliffe and had to settle for a place in the play-offs
That was the first time they hadn’t secured promotion in their short existence
having secure promotions in 21/22 and the 22/23 seasons
Failure to secure promotion last season saw manager Michael Clegg ousted by the club and replaced by Robbie Savage
board member and future director of football of the club
with the club collecting 97 points thus far and have only lost on three occasions
with the club likely to hit 100 points and 100 goals by the end of the season
The club also have the chance to better the 104-point record set by Darlington in the 15/16 season – this was also when the season was 46 games compared to the current 42
making the achievement all the more incredible
The club have also recently tied down 10 of the promotion winning squad to new deals for the 25/26 season
midfielders John Rooney and Paul Dawson and forward Luke Duffy all retained by the club
They are looking to make it nine wins in succession on Saturday
and will be looking to hit that 100 point tally in the process
Tickets will be available to purchase from our turnstiles on Saturday priced at:
Payment can be made via cash at all our turnstiles and card at turnstiles 1 & 2. ‘The Lions’ matchday programme will be on sale for £3 from sellers near each turnstile and our Club Shop

Food and drink from The Lions’ Diner can be paid for by cash or card and the clubhouse accepts and prefers payment by card
Segregation will be in place for this fixture with Macclesfield fans allocated the Railway End of the ground including the second seated stand
Guiseley AFC: A family-friendly football club playing in the Pitching In Northern Premier League Premier Division
based in the Leeds/Bradford area of West Yorkshire

A section of the Macclesfield Canal in Cheshire has emptied due to a breach in the towpath which the Canal & River Trust (CRT) has said could take up to 12 weeks to fix
TikTok users uploaded dramatic videos from Friday 28 March and over the following days that showed the towpath next to a stretch of canal appearing to be undermined by a leak which was flooding a nearby farmer's field
Subsequent videos showed the towpath having been washed away and the canal emptied down to the canal bed
with “stop planks” installed at each end of the section to retain water within the neighbouring sections and keep narrowboats afloat
Canal & River Trust already assessed damage and working to mitigate impact
The CRT attended the scene on Friday 28 March and published a statement on 31 March
The statement said its teams had “worked to install stop planks at Bridge 51 (Cowley Bridge) and Bridge 53 (Locketts Bridge)
We also assisted in moving all boats from the affected area”
the CRT said the leak formed between the bed of the canal and a culvert which worsened over the course of the weekend and caused “significant damage”
“The towpath and canal bed were washed away
leaving a substantial hole in the canal wall and towpath,” the charity said
our teams have been on-site assessing the damage and arranging a fish rescue
The Navigation and towpath will remain closed until further notice
“We are also working to restore canal water levels on either side of the affected area
Charity calls for donations to help protect canals
A Canal & River Trust senior engineer said engineers are working on a plan to fix the canal
and said the charity needed support to protect canals
there has been a breach on the Macclesfield Canal near Bosley due to a leak in the canal bed,” the spokesperson said
“Our charity’s emergency team worked late into the night to help move around 15 boats away from the breach and installed stop planks to prevent any further loss of water
“We’re carrying out a fish rescue and are working to restore water levels on either side of the affected area
with initial findings indicating a substantial repair will take up 12 weeks
We will provide further updates on our website
with our next update scheduled on or before Friday 11 April
“We have closed the towpath and navigation and are contacting boaters moored in the affected area
We would like to apologise for any inconvenience
We’re asking everyone to stay safe and keep away from the breach site until the repairs are complete
is another illustration of the challenges facing our nation’s 250-year-old canal network
or spreading the word about how important it is to keep canals alive.”
Narrowboat user Emma Culshaw Bell uploaded videos to TikTok showing the incident unfolding
One of the videos has been viewed more than 1.3M times
Bell spoke to NCE and said one of the videos she recorded was before the canal towpath collapsed
“You can see the canal water being sucked into a hole and then I panned across and where I focused in you can see the body of water which was depositing into the farmer’s field,” she said
She also said she thought the CRT had some difficulty installing the stop planks because of silt build-up and the fact they hadn’t been used for years
saying: “We were all extremely satisfied with CRT’s response
