We look ahead to today's Play-Off Semi-Final at The ReachTV Stadium
After accumulating their highest ever points total at Step Two
the Sports missed out on the National South title by just one point
their third place finish at least sees them get a bye straight to the Play-Off Semi-Final
where they face Maidstone United this afternoon
That comes after the Stones beat the Sports’ Sussex rivals Worthing on Wednesday night
with a couple of Ben Brookes’ penalties giving them a 2-0 win at Sussex Transport Community Stadium
today sees them kick off their first play-off campaign since 2021/22
where they fell to a 2-0 defeat at Oxford CIty in the Play-Off Eliminator
A lot has changed on and off the pitch since Danny Bloor’s side finished sixth
and this group of players will be keen to get over the line and make it an unforgettable season
Borough will be happy to be home and go into today’s tie defending a proud unbeaten record – 401 days and counting (that’s 1 year
Rewind to a bonkers Good Friday afternoon which saw the Sports play over 35 minutes with not ten
Pierce Bird had drawn Borough level with a spectacular strike when it was 10 v 11 after Sam Beard’s red card
before Matt Rush made it 2-1 on 65 minutes
Adam Murray then opted to twist to get back into the game
but three goals inside the final five minutes saw the Stones run out 5-1 winners
Borough have since beaten Maidstone here – with George Alexander’s strike enough to give the Sports a 1-0 win at the end of February
with both teams looking to make the top-flight of Non-League football
and they’ll need all of those aspects today

Two Danny Whitehall goals had the Iron on their way before Callum Roberts and Carlton Ubaezuonu added the gloss
Chester went behind in their semi-final at Kidderminster Harriers as Declan Weeks came back to haunt his former club to score the winner – that after the Seals triumphed in extra time against Buxton in their eliminator
The Vanarama National League North Promotion Final will be hosted at the Attis Arena and will get underway from 4pm on Sunday 18 May
Boreham Wood completed an astonishing comeback win against Dorking Wanderers in their eliminator
The Wood were 3-1 down with seven minutes left and somehow won 4-3 thanks to Femi Ilesanmi’s late winner
They then went down to runners-up Torquay United and won courtesy of a Matt Rush strike to book their place
Maidstone United did something no other side this season has done and won at Eastbourne Borough to get here
Aaron Blair hit a last-gasp winner there after they’d already been to Worthing and won in their eliminator
The Vanarama National League South Promotion Final will be hosted at the Mangata Pay UK Stadium Meadow Park and will get underway from 12.30pm on Sunday 18 May

They’ll certainly need to do just that if Eastbourne Borough aren’t to progress
they’ve not lost a single game at home all season long
Maidstone United’s comfortable 2-0 victory at Worthing was their 11th away victory since August
This is sure to be a game you can’t take your eyes off
The story so far….Eastbourne Borough were one of six teams within a chance of the title on the last day this season
and whilst they will still be feeling disappointed it was always out of their hands
Adam Murray says he is proud of their season - but will the extra rest twist things in their favour
Maidstone dug deep at Worthing and as we know from the past few years
they’re very good at handling the big occasion

Sports suffer last gasp Play-Off heartbreak
Alfie Pavey’s superb solo effort just after the hour looked like it would be enough to take the tie to extra time after Jacob Berkeley-Agyepong had given the visitors a first half lead at The ReachTV Stadium
And the ball looked firmly in Borough’s court when Charlie Seaman was sent off with eight minutes to go
but Blair’s strike as the clock hit 90 proved enough to break the hearts of the hosts
Maidstone enjoyed slightly more of the ball – but it was Borough who showed they weren’t afraid of having a go at goal
Jason Adigun and Yahaya Bamba both had efforts deflect into the arms of Alexis Andre Jr early on
before Seaman weaved his way through from the right but only to fire over at the other end
Adigun then had a shot well blocked after some good build up play from the hosts
before Camron Gbadebo saw a header clip the top of the bar from a tight angle
it was Maidstone who got the breakthrough three minutes before the break
A cross from the left was kept alive and George Fowler helped it into the path of Berkeley-Agyepong
It was a difficult one to take for the Sports
who knew they would have to find something special against a side known for their defensive resilience – and they produced just that on 63 minutes
A hopeful long ball from Freddie Carter was kept alive by Pavey
who shrugged off the challenge of both Reiss Greenidge and Temi Eweka before rifling a shot low past Andre Jr
Eweka then denied Bamba from putting the Sports in front as Adam Murray’s men looked to turn the tie around
with Adigun shooting off target with 15 minutes to go
Seaman was then shown a second yellow card with 82 minutes gone following a late challenge on Jack Clarke in midfield
Brad Barry then had a free-kick well kept out by Andre Jr
before sub George Alexander skewed a good chance wide of the mark after a great ball in from Courtney Clarke
the Sports were dealt the ultimate sucker punch
Riley Court played the ball over the top of the defence and Blair broke through on goal
but nothing would fall their way as their promotion dreams came to an end
What’s on at the home of the Stones this week…
Hear from Adam Murray following the 2-1 defeat against Maidstone United
If you’re looking for a football fix this afternoon (3 May)
head down to the Gallagher for the Maidstone United Raiders Charity Match
The fixture will be raising funds for the club’s PAN disability section
as well as remembering two Raiders players – Charles Bolt and Reece van Sertima – who are sadly no longer with us
who joined the Raiders at the age of eight
were part of several championship-winning sides
the game will see Maidstone United Raiders
take on The Old Rectory – a team made up of Reece’s family and friends
Kick off at the Gallagher Stadium is at 14:00
with a raffle and auction taking place in the Spitfire Lounge after the game
will start the match and present mementos after the game
There are more than raffle prizes up for grabs
raffle and auction will go to Stones in the Community – Maidstone United’s charity
The Stones are heading to the Sussex coast this Sunday to play Eastbourne Borough in the Vanarama National League South play-off semi-final
we are allocating a batch for the players who got us there and to the supporters’ club to facilitate a combined coach and admission ticket package
We are fully aware we could sell that amount several times over but them’s the breaks
We are also aware that how they’re sold and to who will also be subject to much debate (we’ve wrestled with all the scenarios in the past 12 hours)
and coming to a consensus is nigh on impossible
If we could serve all season ticket holders
plus a general sale – as happened in the FA Cup fourth and fifth rounds last season – that would be the ideal scenario but we’re dealing with a much smaller capacity
There will be a priority sale for season ticket holders (one per season ticket holder) on Friday (2 May) from 6pm
Approx two thirds of the tickets will be available
the second batch will be available on general sale (maximum of two person)
we will monitor the queue and provide a cut-off point to avoid supporters queueing for nothing
Any supporter requiring disabled access/parking
the match will be shown on the big screen in the Spitfire Lounge
It will also be available on the National League TV channel
Borough boss Adam Murray looks ahead to Sunday's tie at The ReachTV Stadium
Worthing want to exorcise a ghost after falling at the final play-off hurdle - they host Maidstone United in a game that'll decide who will play Eastbourne Borough this Sunday
George Busby takes a look at both teams' route to this massive play-off game
After leading the way for a number of weeks in the final few months
Worthing will want to pick themselves up for the Eliminators
After they lost the league title to Truro City by a single point
Maidstone United won’t have that last day disappointment to contend with
They grabbed a play-off place with a bit to spare
and we know the Stones can handle the big moments after their FA Cup heroics last season
Worthing:Danny Cashman: 16Liam Nash: 14Mo Faal: 13Temi Babalola: 8
Maidstone United: Aaron Blair: 19Sol Wanjau-Smith: 8Temitope Eweka: 6Ricardo German: 6
05/10/24: Worthing 0-2 Maidstone United25/01/25: Maidstone United 1-2 Worthing
Worthing: “We know we have to be at our best on Wednesday
“The challenge for us is to play with the shackles off
we've got to find a way to get the players into a head space where they have that same feeling ahead of a massive game against Maidstone
“You've got to really admire what George and co have done down there
the consistency they've produced over a two
three year period now deserves a massive amount of credit”
Maidstone United: “There's nothing like revenge in football
we have to ensure that we don't play any differently
we’re going to prepare just like we do for any other game
we need to be relaxed and we need to trust and believe in ourselves”
Worthing head into a third successive play-off campaign as they take on Maidstone United at the eliminator stage
A five goal showing at Enfield Town on the final day of season wasn’t enough to see the outside chance of claiming top spot come to fruition
with Truro City taking care of business relatively early against St Albans City to see the league title head to the west country
all six teams that were in with a chance of lifting the title heading into the final day all won comfortably
meaning it was as you were and the Reds had to settle for fourth place finish
albeit only one point adrift of the champions
Maidstone went into the final day knowing that – barring an unlikely swing in goal difference between them and Weston-super-mare – they would finish seventh and came from behind twice to eventually draw 2-2 at Farnborough
The Stones are in the second season back in step 2 following relegation from the National League in 2023
finishing in the play-off places on both occasions
They started this season showing and both themselves in lower-mid table after a quarter of the season but a mid-season run that saw them go 18 matches undefeated propelled them into second
A difficult February ultimately cost the chance of fighting for the title but they ended the campaign strongly
only losing one of the last eleven matches
They lost just four matches away from home in the league all season and picked up just as many points on the road (39) as they did at home (40)
a former Premier League player with Wolverhampton Wanderers
After ending his playing career at the Gallagher Stadium
he stepped in as caretaker manager following the departure of Hakan Hayrettin in January 2023
before being appointed permanently two months later
he memorably guided the Stones to the fifth round of the FA Cup
overcoming Championship leaders Ipswich Town on the way
Forward Aaron Blair joined United last summer having helped Braintree Town secure promotion from National League South
scoring in his side’s dramatic 4-3 win over the Rebels at Woodside Road
Blair has added to his reputation as a proven goalscorer at the level by netting 17 times in the league this season
The Reds won the reverse fixture 2-1 at the Gallagher Stadium
thanks to an own goal and a strike by Mo Faal against his former club
It was the same result at Woodside Road when the two sides met in the play-off semi-final 12 months ago
the second deep into stoppage time sent the Rebels to brink of the National League before defeat to Braintree in the final
Current Reds Mo Faal and Lucas Covolan lined up for the Stones that day
Manager Chris Agutter remains without experienced defenders Aarran Racine and Sam Beard who are both serving three-match suspensions
Both would be available for the play-off final should the Reds get there
Joe Partington and Sam Packham who deputised in Saturday’s 5-1 win at Enfield Town look set to continue in defence
Goalkeeper Chris Haigh returned to the starting line-up at the Dave Bryant Stadium for the first time since February’s 4-0 defeat to Slough Town

Welling United’s relegation from the Vanarama National League South has been confirmed following a 4-0 defeat to Maidstone United at Park View Road on Friday afternoon
Goals either side of the break did the damage for the Wings as the Stones strengthened their play-off credentials with a convincing victory
The hosts came agonisingly close to opening the scoring with just five minutes on the clock when Jez Davies swivelled nicely on the edge of the box before seeing his shot crash back off the woodwork and clawed away by Stones stopper Alexis Andre Jr
the promotion-chasing visitors began to turn the screw – Jack Burchell made a good block from Charlie Seaman’s volley
before Rhys Lovett made a good save to keep Ruben Shakpoke’s shot out of the bottom left-hand corner
It would not be long before Maidstone would get the opener
with Aaron Blair crashing home a finish into the roof of the net
Welling looked to respond with Davies hitting the crossbar for the second time with another good-looking shot from the edge of the penalty area
but their efforts were hindered on the half-hour mark when Deon Moore was forced off with injury
The Stones continued to push for a second and got it before the break
and it came via a set-piece as Temi Eweka powered home a header from a corner
It would get worse for the Wings in the second half as the visitors made it three just six minutes after the restart as they capitalised on a Lovett error
The goalkeeper’s attempted clearance resulted in a mis-kick
allowing Jacob Berkley-Agyepong the simple task of finishing into an empty net
Three became four before the hour mark when the Stones were awarded a penalty after Lovett was adjudged to have fouled Berkley-Agyepong in the box
leaving Ben Brookes to step up and dispatch his spot-kick to put the game well and truly beyond the hosts
The work will now begin for Welling to mount a challenge for an immediate return as they prepare for life in step three next season

Eastbourne Borough’s dream of promotion to the top division of non-league football are over.
The Sports lost 2-1 at home to Maidstone in the semi-final in front of more than 3,400 at Priory Lane - with the visitors scoring in the 90th minute
Borough were undefeated at home all season in the league but went the same way as Worthing in the play-offs – losing to a Maidstone side who were well off the title race but qualified for the knockouts by finishing seventh in the league
They will now face Boreham Wood in the final in 2 weeks time
leaving Adam Murray’s Borough to fight it out with Worthing and Horsham in next season’s National South
which turned out to be a fairly even match with neither side able to break the deadlock in the first 30 minutes
Yahaya Bamba and Jason Adigun both had attempts at goal blocked while Maidstone struck the Borough bar
albeit with an effort which would have possibly been chalked off for offside had it gone in
Maidstone took the lead through Jacob Berkeley-Agypong
It was getting tense as the second half continued but that tension was lifted on 63 minutes when Alfie Pavey levelled for Eastbourne
beating two defenders before finishing clinically
Maidstone were reduced to ten men when Charlie Seaman was shown his second yellow card
the Stones broke Borough’s hearts when Aaron Blair restored their lead in the 90th minute
It was a very nervy and edgy 6 minutes of added-time
with Borough giving it everything they had to try and find a equaliser
It was such a cruel blow to end a fantastic season for Borough
who will be determined to go again next season!

They come into the Easter weekend in eighth place

Their recent form has seen them embark on a three-game winning run before losing 3-0 at Weston-super-Mare in a six-pointer earlier this month and following up with a goalless draw at home to Weymouth last weekend
Welling slipped to a narrow defeat at the hands of Maidstone at the Gallagher Stadium in the reverse fixture on New Year’s Day
Despite a brave defensive performance from the Wings
Aaron Blair’s second-half strike was enough to earn the points for the in-form home side
Tickets for the penultimate home fixture of the 2024/25 season against Maidstone are now on sale
