If anyone would like to volunteer please email margate@parkrun.com it's pacer week next week and it would be great to have some more volunteers Have a cracking week and we'll look forward to seeing you all next Saturday for some more eggs-ercise 🙂 ***RESULTS PROBLEM FOR THIS MORNINGS RUN*** This website is using a security service to protect itself from online attacks The action you just performed triggered the security solution There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase You can email the site owner to let them know you were blocked Please include what you were doing when this page came up and the Cloudflare Ray ID found at the bottom of this page Fabulous personal news report from Oli on his 500th milestone then some additional information about our event underneath... ============================================================= along with many friends I have made along the way Annoyingly the weather was miserable with torrential rain (but no wind) this did not stop me and the 206 other runners I offered to pace a 34-minute parkrun thinking that I could jog along in my Sunday best and support my long-suffering wife to get a PB it transpired that she was too busy listening to loud banging tunes (apparently she can’t run without them!) so the conversation was minimal Last week Anna (The Banner!) asked me to write a bit about my parkrun journey and what it means to me so this gave me time to reflect on my parkruns over the years… It was the 24th November 2012 when I found myself standing on the start line of my first ever parkrun at Whitstable wondering what on earth I was doing As someone who would regularly skive off cross country at school and share a fag with the other dedicated non-athletes 30 minutes or so later it’s only fair to say I was converted so I promised myself that if I only did one exercise activity a week It's hard to summarise the next twelve years into a few paragraphs but for me parkrun is all about the people; whether they run volunteer or come to support their family and friends Once Dennis had started up parkrun at Margate in May 2013 I met lots of local runners and ended up joining the best running club in the world (Thanet Road Runners!) It’s here I should warn new park runners to be careful as 53 marathons including a couple of 100K ultras hypothermia in the Romanian mountains and third degree sunburn in the Moroccan desert will testify how additive this running lark can be 500 is a stupid amount of parkruns to do and without all the people listed below it certainly wouldn’t have been possible I would like to say thank you to everyone who has volunteered over my parkrun journey Anyone who stands out there in the wind and rain is the true hero There are some real legends here at Margate that deserve a special mention Dennis and his Mum who set up Margate parkrun and stuck with it even when we were only getting 25 runners often sacrificing her own runs to step in when we were short of volunteers in the early days Anna (The Banner!) who is always here pinning banners on people and welcoming visitors and new runners Without her today I would have been at the back hoping no one had noticed it was my 500th parkrun the two Johns who have volunteered a staggering 997 times between them- They are true legends and Doreen who martials at ‘Brian’s bench’ every week whether rain or shine It is also worth mentioning Sharon and Lee from Margate Junior parkrun who continue to support the local children in our community I know they would love to see you if you have half an hour spare on a Sunday morning  Jay Bailey - we have been pretty much tied on runs on our way to 500 so I would like to say thanks to him for letting me get there first It’s the least he could do as I let him beat me every week thanks to everyone for coming today – I look forward to seeing you at my 501st parkrun ================================================================== Chris Brown was celebrating a 25th milestone and pacing at 25 (great job pacing) His daughter Bethany helped volunteer on the finish line and supported him and others over the finish with the high five hand She also kindly shared this with another young supporter Sofia As Kay said it has her taken a while to get here with grandaughter Sofia on the finish line and son Jay (after he was our first finisher) It was also tutu week = 22 in the event date (next one 22nd March) Good to see a few this week (any excuse for me to dress up) and Scot shared his spare one with Royston we also had a boomerang B2 nicknamed “R2B2” arrive at our parkrun with regular Michael Clarricoats after he visited Plymouth last week After R2B2 had a photo taken with an "It's all about me" banner of course!) Michael handed it over to another of our regulars Bryan Baird who will be taking it to Oslo parkrun on the 1st March 2025 this is the Boomerang background...On June 15th 2024 10 Boomerangs started their journeys by running they left Australia the following week and they were handed out at Singapore to a “boomeranger” to pass on to another parkrun with the hope that eventually they all come home Thank you to our volunteers - wonderful as ever Thank you to all our visitors who joined us today and well done to all those doing their first ever parkrun / parkwalk today.  Some of you maybe  in the photos below - you will notice a theme with Thanet Roadrunners present to support Oli Fantastic to see the Hawkins family (and friends) with us this week Thank you to Vic Croucher for several of the photos above. With further information on all present today, please see the results at Margate parkrun Results Page and the data below: If you would like to volunteer, do email in with your barcode to margate@parkrun.com or note your details on the clipboard by the scanners Let us know if you are flexible about which role you do (and if you need advice on any) Please note we are looking to include 2 tail walkers for future events where we have offers - so do pop your name down - and remember you get a volunteer token and event token - as well as the satisfaction you made sure everyone got back okay and can help help bring the posts back Volunteers meet at 8.45 and we usually need you till 10.15 but if you need to go before, do say and we can work out the role. with up to 88,000 litres of water managed over 0.55 hectares The work will provide further benefits including providing nectar rich planting for bees and butterflies and the planting of new streets which can help to cool the urban environment during heatwaves Southern Water is working across Kent to reduce storm overflows, including in Margate, Deal and Whitstable – with further work and schemes due to be announced this year. The work is part of our £1.5bn Clean Rivers and Seas Plan  Jerome Corcoran from Southern Water’s Clean Rivers and Seas Task Force “We’re excited to be working closely with Kent County Council to make this road greener and help slow the flow of water running off roads and entering our sewer network We’re sorry for any disruption this is causing customers in the area but the benefits will be felt by helping us reduce storm overflows so we can play our part in creating healthier rivers and seas.” Southern Water and Kent County Council will be looking at further roads across the county where similar schemes can be carried out Kent County Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment said: “I am pleased that we are working collaboratively with Southern Water to find sustainable solutions that will reduce storm overflows across the county starting with Gloucester Avenue in Margate “Flooding has a serious impact on Kent communities and with increasing periods of intensive rainfall the council is committed to working with partners on finding ways to minimise the impacts and better manage surface water.” BN13 3NX.
