Scheme designed by Assael Architecture for Birmingham developer Worthearly Ltd
Plans for a 300-home development in Melton Mowbray have been given the green light
designed by Assael Architecture for Birmingham developer Worthearly Ltd
will be located on a brownfield site in the heart of the Leicestershire market town and feature mostly two and three-storey homes with some apartment buildings
a manufacturer of interior and exterior doors
which closed all its three sites in Melton Mowbray in 2022
CGI of how the scheme will look when built
Arranged across three distinct character areas
the development will include taller homes on wide tree-lined avenues and lower-scale mews streets
along with a pedestrianised street for play and community gathering
The scheme also features a new square facing onto Melton County Park
providing a new entrance to the park and a riverside edge to the south
Assael’s design features a red brick palette and detailings including arched doorways which have taken inspiration from the town’s historic buildings
Original proposals included an affordable component
and the developer had been in discussions with Heylo Housing
However a viability assessment found ”significant land contamination on the site as a result of the previous industrial use of the site”
The remediation necessary meant ”contributions towards areas such as highways
affordable housing and the NHS would render the scheme to be unviable,” according to planning documents
the developer did agree to make a contribution of more than £4m towards schools in the area
While planning officers said it was “regrettable” that a development of its size could not make significant contributions to affordable housing and infrastructure
there remained ”a number of issues weighing in favour of granting consent”
Pocket chief bemoans ‘disappointing’ results as ONS publishes latest quarterly data
A former pub and canalside cash and carry could be demolished to free up the site
Deal goes through two years after Berkley named preferred bidder on £2bn scheme
DESNZ will boost green skills under its Warm Homes Plan through financial awards
Developer also wins grant funding from London mayor

Our dedicated test tracks are the railway’s link between innovation and implementation – and we want your thoughts on their future
Our testing facilities are located across two sites in Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire and in Tuxford in Nottinghamshire
The team that runs these sites (formerly known as RIDC) is part of our Engineering Services function
tapping into unmatched knowledge in domains such as systems reliability and technology development
The test tracks are strategically important because they provide a safe environment where new and modified trains
infrastructure and other technologies can be tested by the railway industry
They are also ideally suited and regularly used for research and training in a live but controlled railway environment
We are consulting on the future needs for the test tracks as we develop a strategy to maximise their use. You can input into this consultation here: The future of the test tracks
It isn’t just the physical test tracks that are invaluable to the railway industry – the range of novel and forefront technologies tested at the facilities over the years mean they are operated and maintained by staff whose expertise are unparalleled
Anyone testing their solutions at the test tracks have access to real world railway experience and connections with those running the main line railway that simply do not exist elsewhere
The test tracks closely represent the operational railway and include many characteristics found across our national network
making them a safe and reliable testing environment for the railway of the future
Having been opened in 1966 to accelerate the development of the high-tech
the test track at Old Dalby provides 13 miles of modern intercity railway (including 11 miles of live overhead electrification) that allows trains to run up to 125mph
the test track at Tuxford provides 10 miles of diverse
high quality railway alignment enabling testing at up to 75mph
It includes the only RIS-1530-PLT rail plant assurance rig in Britain
as well as other facilities for trialling on-track plant and machines
The test tracks have a proven record in accommodating the diverse needs of testing and assuring high speed passenger trains
We are a member of the UK Rail Research and Innovation Network (UKRRIN) and work closely with universities
regulators and suppliers to provide the physical conditions and invaluable expertise of the real railway
Our sites are certified as training facilities
and the diversity of the railway environments we simulate are ideally suited to teaching for further and higher education establishments
in-work training and continuing professional development
High speed rail across the globe owes a legacy to the research done at Old Dalby for the Advanced Passenger Train

New services to help transport across the Melton area
An updated bus service network is coming to Melton from January
Services funded by Leicestershire County Council using government cash
will be supported across the area and will include a new on-demand bookable bus serving areas across Melton
and will start from Monday 6th January 2025
operating seven days a week will cover new developments
some industrial estates and places of interest that are not currently served
Additional villages will be added onto the Melton Loughborough route
Larger buses will serve the schools and colleges
operating at key commute times to cater for students and non-entitled scholars
All re-designed routes will serve both secondary schools in Melton Town
Passengers will also benefit from an on-demand
bookable service that will operate across zones in Melton
This service is known as a ‘digital demand responsive transport’ option
and can be booked through an app or a call centre
increases public transport connections and uses smaller vehicles more suited to rural roads
Improvements to the network have been funded by the Bus Service Improvement Plan Plus government (BSIP+) grant
which has helped the county council review all supported services across Leicestershire
Plans to improve the bus network across Leicestershire were set out in the Leicestershire Bus Service Improvement Plan document and were discussed at Melton’s Sustainable Travel Roadshows back in October 2024
“The changes in Melton Mowbray are the first for our county-wide network review to drive forward a positive change for public transport across Leicestershire
“We have looked at flexible transport solutions that best support the area
The smaller on-demand buses will operate in zones to maximise convenient connections
and bus users will be able to use an app or a call centre to book their journeys
“We’re using this cash wisely and for the benefit of our communities by identifying how our bus network can better serve Leicestershire.”
there will be Sustainable Travel Roadshows in Charnwood and Harborough
These roadshows will discuss plans for wider district bus services
with the town services being reviewed in spring next year
More information about the roadshows and Melton’s network review can be found on the Choose How You Move website
