BMX bike racers have issued a plea to local electric scooter and remote-controlled car users: please don’t use their beloved Pineham track The city’s historic circuit recently re-opened six months after a devastating flood severely damaged it But local bicycle racers are worried that e-bikes and remote-controlled cars will swiftly wreck the freshly laid surface The community facility was closed last September after being destroyed by flood water but re-opened after MK BMX Racing Club secured thousands of pounds of funding to carry out repairs The club hopes to resume regular coaching and practice sessions as soon as possible and the track is due to host hundreds of riders from across the country in a regional-level race at the end of June But club members still have concerns about illegal use of the track by electric-powered vehicles such e-bikes and remote-controlled cars which damages the surface and has to be repaired by volunteers before cyclists can ride safely Powered vehicles repeatedly damaged the track when it was open last summer and part of this month’s resurfacing work had to be repeated when large remote-controlled cars were used on the track “Thanks to hard work by volunteers and a generous grant from Sport England this historic community facility is finally back in action,” said club chairman Paul Ritchie “But it won’t be open for long if people continue to trash it by using electric-powered bikes flooding meant the track was only open for 100 days – and before literally every practice volunteers had to spend time repairing damage caused by inappropriate and illegal use “I know it’s frustrating that there aren’t enough facilities for everyone who wants to use e-bikes or RC cars but BMX racing tracks are simply not designed for powered vehicles of any shape or size and the sign by the track entrance clearly states this “The increase in flooding over recent years means it’s a constant struggle just to keep MK’s track usable for bicycles please don’t make things harder by using powered vehicles on it.” Milton Keynes BMX Racing Club has been coaching riders from complete beginners to world championship finalists at the Pineham track for more than 40 years The club recently secured a substantial sponsorship from MK-based cycle distributor Madison to help ensure its immediate future Red Bull secured double points after a fierce Max Verstappen claimed his third pole position of the season as both Red Bull drivers reached Q3 ahead of tomorrow's Miami Grand Prix Poor weather created the perfect storm for a chaotic Miami Sprint Race It was mixed emotions for Red Bull Racing during qualifying for the Miami Grand Prix Sprint Race MKFM always wants to hear your stories about your city Feedback window for local sports closes on Sunday Track riders implore electric vehicle users: ‘please don’t wreck it again’ Chilly feeling with scattered showers possible Bereaved kids fund calling for support from local businesses Shoplifting app being used by more than 1500 businesses Marathon walk to every London football ground starts at MK Dons Popular player full of confidence for next season © 2020 MKFM Limited - Credit: Open UniversityA university has built a so-called 'living green roof' on its campus so scientists can study the benefits of having plants on top of buildings in this country The Open University’s first green roof installation has been placed on top of an office building at its Walton Hall campus in Milton Keynes. Known as the 'Living Roof Live Lab' it features eight rectangular beds – known as rigs – containing different vegetation from crushed brick and limestone to sedum and wildflowers The two-year project aims to provide research on the ecological and urban benefits of green roofing in the UK "As well as being a nice rooftop green space it will provide insights into how green roofs can mitigate urban heat and improve energy efficiency in buildings," said Dr Kadmiel Maseyk from the Open University (OU) “We need to look at the UK climate with respect to green roof performance the data we have currently is largely based on North America and Europe “Creating a green space on a rooftop is an ideal opportunity; it can keep a building warmer in winter and cooler in summer They also cost very little in terms of what they are going to create Milton Keynes is in the top two for cities outside of London with the most amount of 'intensive green roofs' according to the Open University "These roofs are really important for biodiversity and to help tackle climate change" said Chris Bridgman “We’ve come together with the university to look at all the green roofs and actually capture some really meaningful data that can be used to lobby the government and ensure that more rooftops are rolled out across the country "It’s a nature-based solution to the biodiversity crisis.” Want a quick and expert briefing on the biggest news stories Listen to our latest podcasts to find out What You Need To Know Home / News / To Milton Keynes This May marks one year since Unity Place fully opened its doors in the heart of Milton Keynes – and what a year it’s been it feels only right that it lands alongside #LoveMK Day (1 May) – a city-wide celebration of everything that makes Milton Keynes bold Because let’s be honest: there’s nowhere quite like Milton Keynes From driverless buses and robot deliveries to the UK’s largest fleet of autonomous service robots – innovation isn’t a buzzword here No wonder Milton Keynes is ranked among the UK’s top ten cities for start-ups Unity Place was designed to slot right into that energy the first place many people see when they arrive we wanted to create a place that adds to the city’s momentum – a hub for big ideas it’s a space designed to support the city’s vision – where innovation has room to grow From flexible workspaces and collaborative zones to artisan coffee and even a checkout – free store experience – every element has been shaped around how people live and work today x+why offers 60,000 square feet of contemporary office space with full technology support building a community of purpose-led businesses that are ready to grow with the city Unity Place is proud to play its part in helping Milton Keynes stay bold Milton Keynes: At the Heart of the UK’s Innovation Corridor The city stands at the centre of one of the most ambitious growth corridors in Europe – the Oxford-Cambridge Arc Positioned to become the UK’s answer to Silicon Valley the Arc is set to inject up to £78 billion into the national economy by 2035 creating a world-leading cluster of science a city already making a powerful case for its leadership role within the Arc With a tech sector that generates £3.4 billion in Gross Value Added (GVA) and with one in three jobs connected to technology Milton Keynes isn’t just part of the Arc’s Silicon Valley vision – it defines it and testbed status for cutting-edge technology it has a magnetic pull for talent The East-West rail link will further supercharge this momentum But Milton Keynes should be more than a stop on that line We’re here to grow with the city – to offer the spaces and support that enable forward-thinking businesses to thrive The recent announcement that Universal Studios will build its first European theme park just outside Milton Keynes marks more than a major investment – it signals a new era for the region One rich with potential across sectors and supply chains and scale-ups growing inside Unity Place to play an active role in that transformation and help shape the future we’ve taken inspiration from the city around us Whether it’s launching The Corner Store or championing smart-city ideas we see Unity Place as more than just a building – it’s a mindset A city that doesn’t just keep up – it leads You can unsubscribe from our newsletter at any point by clicking the link at the bottom of this website.Newsletters are sent on a monthly basis Site designed by ilk.Agency. has helped him and his family through a cancer hell MKFM told how devastated Andrew Green was planning a mammoth walk to London from Milton Keynes taking in every one of the capital’s football clubs He left Stadium MK this morning to start his fund-raising journey but not before he had a quick look at the club’s famous pitch Andrew’s son Alexander has twice been diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma radiotherapy and surgery including skin grafts to the side of his face During Alexander’s recovery Andrew’s family were supported by the charity Young Lives vs Cancer  It’s that organisation that Andrew wants to raise funds for with his four-day walk and has set himself a target of £10,000 “It’s 20 grounds,” says Andrew “Starting at MK Dons and finishing at Tottenham the route works out about 26 miles a day to get to the 132 miles over four days.” To support Andrew visit: www.justgiving.com/page/andrewsfundraiserforyounglivesvscancer A high-tech crime fighting app that helps shopkeepers to identify criminals and report thefts has been hailed a success one year after it was rolled out the retail crime reporting app contains galleries of offenders shares information about local criminal activity allows users to report theft and anti-social behaviour and receives alerts and messages about shop incidents Since its 2024 launch more than 1500 businesses have signed up to the free to use technology and over 1700 incidents have been registered the Police and Crime Commissioner as part of his retail crime strategy in Thames Valley “This app has been a key part of my retail crime strategy to make reporting shoplifting and the sharing of information easier for retailers and has been a great success,” said Matthew Barber “I encourage businesses to join and to make full use of the app so more criminals can be brought to justice and retail staff can be protected Maximising member participation is essential for successful crime reduction schemes.”  The scheme is available to businesses in Berkshire Oxfordshire and Milton Keynes and can be used for retail night-time economy or anti-social behaviour (ASB) schemes The information is shared with Thames Valley Police and supports the use of enforcement action against offenders as well as increasing in shoplifting convictions “Disc can support retailers through any obstacles which allows the reporting of shoplifting or ASB to be completed very quickly,” said Oliver Fletcher, Thames Valley Business Crime Reduction Partnership Manager “Some businesses still prefer to ring 101 but this system is tailored to retail and similar crimes making it much more targeted and efficient.”  To sign up: oliver.fletcher@thamesvalley.police.uk More information: https://discagainstcrime.com/ Mears has secured a major contract renewal with Milton Keynes City Council worth £230m over five years to deliver housing repairs and maintenance services covers both planned and reactive maintenance across the council’s housing stock A five-year extension option could take the total value up to £475m which first picked up the flagship Milton Keynes contract back in 2016 Chief executive officer Lucas Critchley said: “This sees the conclusion of a busy period of contract rebids against which the group has secured new orders to a value approaching £1.5bn at a 100% contract retention success rate.” The award is still subject to finalising terms and the standstill period the higher than average temperatures will subside over the weekend with cooler weather and isolated showers on the way for some With isolated thundery showers in parts of southern and eastern England on Friday afternoon and evening Saturday will see a further drop in temperatures with more frequent cloud with temperatures on Saturday likely peaking at 22C in southern and central England which is lower than those experienced by many in recent days though any rain is still likely to be fairly light in nature “The recent very warm weather for the time of year is subsiding over the weekend as a weak cold front moves over the UK,” said Tony Wisson “We expect cooler temperatures as the front pushes south This cooler air will also help introduce isolated showers across eastern parts “Sunday will feel much cooler compared to recent days with temperatures falling slightly below average for the time of year We can expect mid-to-low double figures for many and even single figures for those further north.” It’s a similar theme for the Bank Holiday Monday the cloudiest conditions are expected in the south and east with further scattered showers possible at times Milton Keynes City Council is providing £100,000 in match-funding to town and parish councils so they can deliver larger community projects in their area.   All MK’s 48 town and parish councils were given the opportunity to submit up to three applications for funding of up to £20,000 to boost projects that will make a difference to local people but that they could not afford to deliver alone.   Half of the money comes from the city council’s Community Infrastructure Fund with the other half coming from their own funds This is the seventh year that the city council has boosted community projects through its Community Infrastructure Fund.  The following projects are being funded this year:   “We’re pleased to have helped town and parish councils make more than 80 community projects happen since the fund was put in place We’ve helped lots of projects that are important to local people from accessible play equipment to flood protection equipment and solar panels.”  projects are scored against criteria including ‘does it solve a persistent or safety issue’ ‘does it have community support’ and ‘does it provide long term value for residents’.  Applications to the Fund for 2026/27 can be made by town and parish councils between 1 April and 31 August Application details have been sent to each of the 48 town community and parish councils across the city.  Image: Solar Panels installed on Newton Leys Pavilion building match-funded by the Community Infrastructure Fund 2024/2025 Milton Keynes City Council is encouraging eligible local residents to apply for free energy-saving home improvements under a new Warmer Homes Grant scheme and other energy efficiency upgrades – all fully funded for those who qualify The programme is funded by the UK Government in partnership with Milton Keynes City Council This scheme replaces the previous grant and now has wider eligibility While only households without gas heating qualified before the updated criteria now includes those with gas heating as well as those on a means-tested benefit and living in a home with an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of D The grant is available to landlords as well as private tenants Residents who think they may be eligible are encouraged to visit the Warmer Homes website to check and apply Milton Keynes has been building lots of houses in recent years  As Figure 1 shows, over the last 5 years, Milton Keynes has outperformed the rest of the Oxford-Cambridge Growth Corridor and the rest of the country It has also built houses faster than required by the Government’s new formula – building 2,110 homes per year compared to the new target of 1,720 Milton Keynes also does well on affordable housing delivery It ranks 8th out of 296 English local authorities securing 32 per cent affordable housing across all private developments Milton Keynes has recently started building upward in its city centre 1,300 new apartments have been built in the last 5 years increasing residential density in the city centre by 62 per cent Milton Keynes does have the (dis)advantage of starting from a very low base – its central district was designed with a lot of car parking space and it has a number of under/unused commercial buildings Flipping these and building taller offices and multistorey car parks are relatively straightforward ways to increase city-centre density Importantly, though, the local authority isn’t content with its progress so far. The 2024 draft city plan expects an additional 11,000 homes to be built in the central district by 2050 this would see central Milton Keynes becoming denser than both central Bristol and Manchester are today A significant part of this growth is to be achieved through urban extensions And these urban extensions haven’t just been allocated by the local authority – they are being actively facilitated by it (Note: Milton Keynes Northern Expansion is being promoted by Urban & Civic Plc The U&C Chief Executive is also Chair of the Centre for Cities board.)  Milton Keynes is a prosperous city that is growing quickly. These fundamentals mean local house prices, while lower than nearby areas (likely a result of consistently high building rates), are relatively high. As discussed in recent Centre for Cities research these high house prices translate into significant potential land value capture And Milton Keynes is doing a good job of utilising this potential its forthcoming local plan requires 40 per cent affordable housing provision and across the authority it has achieved an average of 32 per cent Figure 4 shows that these outcomes are similar to what Centre for Cities modelling suggests is possible The only potential issue is the distribution of this affordable housing As all of it is delivered by developers on-site the local distribution skews heavily toward greenfield sites while central build-to-rent developments have returned an average of only 7 per cent If the city wants mixed housing across the city it could consider taking some of the greenfield land value capture (Section 106 contributions) in cash to fund direct delivery in central locations There is obviously a lot that other authorities could learn from Milton Keynes when it comes to housing and planning but this doesn’t mean things couldn’t be even better there Effective strategic planning requires housing and transport developments to be coordinated but the local authority currently has limited powers and capacity to do this This is holding up two important interventions:   Despite the benefits, a proposal for a Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes mayoral authority was recently refused for prioritisation by the Government there are several lessons for the Government achieving high levels of housebuilding requires a variety of approaches It isn’t upwards or outwards – high growth places have to be doing both political willingness to grow is crucial and central Government should make the most of it if Milton Keynes’ experience is anything to go by coordinated growth makes future growth easier Capacity and expectations developed today can set a course for decades to come the mayoral authority that includes Milton Keynes should ensure it enables the city to go beyond its targets by providing the infrastructure it needs and website in this browser for the next time I comment.
