Northorpe Hall to host celebration of remembrance
Northorpe Hall Child & Family Trust is set to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day with a special community celebration on Thursday
Held in the tranquil grounds of Northorpe Hall
this free-entry event promises a vibrant and heartfelt tribute to the sacrifices of the past and the strength of the present
A key attraction of the day will be an impressive exhibition of over 600 pieces of war memorabilia
generously shared by local collector Richard Perkins
His collection spans both World Wars and offers a tangible insight into the lives of those who served
“I believe these artefacts should be displayed for people to see a piece of war history
“The fact that soldiers fought on our behalf with very little protection yet won a war through resilience and working with comrades is remarkable,” said Richard
He continued: “The sacrifices soldiers and people in general made on our behalf should be remembered and celebrated
“I am proud to be able to share my personal collection of war memorabilia at Northorpe Hall
which is also a place helping children and young people grow their resilience in a changing and pressured world.”
The family-friendly celebration will feature a range of vintage-themed activities and traditional treats
designed to transport visitors back to the 1940s
Competitions with hampers and other prizes
WWI and WWII exhibitions and memory-sharing stations
A two-minute silence and commemorative tribute
Guests are encouraged to dress in 1940s attire
Northorpe Hall CEO Dipika Kaushal emphasised the event’s dual purpose of remembrance and unity: “VE Day is an important reminder of what we’ve overcome as a nation
“This event is about honouring history and our brave soldiers by bringing families and the local community together in a spirit of hope and togetherness.”
Proceeds and donations collected on the day will support the Trust’s mission of helping children
and families facing mental health challenges
Everyone from local residents and families to schools and community groups is warmly invited to attend

It will bring us one step closer to running more frequent
faster and cleaner electric trains through the area and building a more accessible station for you
We’ll continue working to upgrade the railway and station here to allow longer and faster electric trains to pass through
We’ll carry on building a new platform over Easter and install 748 metres of track
This work will continue until December when we’ll finish building a further second platform and new tracks
ready for the station to fully open at Christmas
The new tracks and additional platforms will help us run separate fast and slower trains on the route at the same time – giving you more reliable and more frequent services
Our upgrade of Mirfield station also involves making it more accessible
We first removed the bridge deck on Station Road and finished piling work – or laying the foundations for new building work – over Christmas
we’ll finish building a new station entrance
We’ll also install a new footbridge and lifts later this year
The lifts will take you directly from the road to the platform – for step-free access throughout the station
Our teams will also improve the car park with new blue badge parking areas and better cycle storage.
This upgrade work forms an important part of our £11bn Transpennine Route Upgrade that’ll improve almost all of the 23 stations along the 70-mile route between York and Manchester. We’ve already made significant strides to improve other stations on the route, including Morley and Leeds.
It’s not just Mirfield getting an extra railway line either. We’re doubling the number of tracks from two to four all the way from Huddersfield to Dewsbury. It’s part of our commitment to give you better journeys throughout.
We’ll need to close sections of the railway between Huddersfield and Dewsbury to allow our teams to safely carry out the work. Please check your journeys across the Pennines from Saturday 19 to Monday 21 April.
Andrew Campbell, project sponsor for Transpennine Route Upgrade at Network Rail, said: “We’re aware that disruption isn’t ideal, so we would like to thank the people of Mirfield for their understanding as we continue our progress in delivering major upgrades to the station.”
There’ll be diversionary routes and rail replacement buses to keep you moving along the Transpennine route, with amended timetables also in place.
Station Road at Mirfield will also close, meaning there will be a longer walk than usual from the station to the rail replacement bus locations on Huddersfield Road.
Thank you for bearing with us during this work and please check before you travel.
Customers are being advised to check before they travel due to essential TRU work on Easter Weekend (Saturday 19 April - Monday 21 April) between Huddersfield and Dewsbury
diversionary routes and rail replacement buses will be in operation
Our TRU engineers will be carrying out track renewal work and signal testing across West Yorkshire
whilst significant progress continues on delivering improvements at Mirfield station
The upgrades at Mirfield include the reconstruction of platforms which will allow the number of railway lines to increase from three to four, so more trains can run
accessible footbridge with lifts will take place
a new station entrance on Station Road will officially open
which will lead onto a new platform.
The scope of this work means disruption is expected in Mirfield
with Station Road closed to vehicles from 10pm on Thursday 17 April and to pedestrians from midnight on Friday 18 April
Before the station closes on Friday night and after it reopens on Tuesday morning
including access to and from the station platforms.
“We’d strongly encourage anyone travelling between Manchester
Leeds or York this weekend to plan their journey ahead of time at nationalrail.co.uk
where they can find accurate information on how their journey is impacted and how they will be kept on the move.
“We’re taking a major step towards the upgrade of Mirfield station and delivering essential rail upgrades elsewhere on the route – this upcoming work also coincides with a series of weekend works that began on March 29 between Mossley and Dewsbury
which will continue until the weekend of May 8-9.
“Whilst we know there is no ideal time to complete disruptive work
both series of upgrades will play a pivotal role in unlocking the wider TRU benefits that will improve journeys across the North.”
Major Projects & TRU Director at TransPennine Express
“The works taking place during Easter weekend mark the next step in the transformation of Mirfield station
with a new station entrance on Station Road and the opening of the temporary platform 1.

Mirfield ARLFC are about to make history in the Challenge Cup..
There are three new teams set to feature in the 2025 Betfred Challenge Cup
coached by former Super League star Shaun Lunt
ready to make their debut in the sport’s oldest competition this weekend
The West Yorkshire side will face the Royal Navy in Round One
where the winner will progress into the Second Round and host Betfred League One’s Workington Town
Rugby League in Mirfield first came about in the 1970s
who drew players and supporters from the town and surrounding areas.
But the club’s influence waned as financial and operational challenges mounted, leading to its eventual dissolution in the mid-2000s. This left a void in the community that the Mirfield Stags temporarily filled until their own closure prompted the relaunch of the new Mirfield ARLFC. Read about the club's full history here
embarked on a mission to revive Rugby League tradition in Mirfield
before reverting to their original colours and club house
Otty admitted there were only ever plans for an open-age men’s team
but the reception they received exceeded all expectations
with Mirfield ARLFC are now proudly holding a men’s and women’s team
They currently compete in the Yorkshire Men's League
It’s been a whirlwind three years for the club
but undoubtedly an impressive and upward trajectory with Lunt at the helm
“Our first season was a bit of a struggle,” Otty said
and it was a case of whoever would put their hand up on a Sunday afternoon
“We finished second that season and then in Shaun’s first year
we managed to get over twenty people training and made every final
“We’ve done that again in 2024 and went on to win the league.”
who announced his retirement from the professional game in 2021
was grateful to be given the coaching opportunity:
“I was a little lost from retiring and a little bit lost to the world
Mikey said why don’t I come down and coach and I’ve loved it ever since,” explained Lunt
it’s all about growth and getting better and better each year
It’s about having a strong and stable club on and off the pitch and it’s all about giving the kids on the streets of Mirfield somewhere to be at night
and more people involved in this great game.”
And Lunt is no stranger to the Challenge Cup competition
having featured in three finals with Huddersfield
Leeds and Hull KR respectively throughout his playing career
He also knows how important Mirfield’s inclusion will be this year:
A Challenge Cup appearance was one of our underlying goals when we first got together
and we’ve done all the right things to be here
“It’s the oldest cup game going in rugby league
so to be a part of that and have Mirfield be a part of that history
Mirfield will entertain the Royal Navy in an enticing home tie at Frank Middleton Park
and Otty and Lunt can hardly contain their excitement:
we’ve been brainstorming,” said Otty
“We’ve been working on a programme; we’ve been in touch with the Navy for team photos and we’ve booked out function rooms
We’re going to sort a hotel with Navy and make a night of it with them too
“I think it’s brilliant for a team like Royal Navy to come to Mirfield
because when else are they going to come here
“There’s such a buzz and there’s going to be a big crowd here on the day
it’s about promoting this cup game and making sure the whole of Mirfield is there and watching – more than there would be on a typical Saturday or Sunday afternoon.”
A victory for Mirfield would send them straight into the Second Round with the chance of hosting Cumbrian side Workington
who coincidentally happen to be Lunt’s hometown club
in which he made over 70 appearances for between 2006 and 2008
Lunt has admitted having one eye on those draw results:
But we’ve got the Navy to beat first
looking at that Workington tie – this is something I’ve actually said in the past – that I’d love to coach in the Challenge Cup and play Workington
“Sometimes things do get written for you
but I’m sure the Navy will have something to say about that
“We’ll just take each round as it comes but a chance to play them would be great and great for the lads as well.”
Will there be magic of the cup for Mirfield
“The magic of the cup is great,” Lunt continued
“I’ve been fortunate enough to get to the final and unfortunate to win it
but as a kid you fall in love with the sport and cups and it’s something I used to look up to
“The Challenge Cup has a massive place in my heart
and I want to light that magic for everyone in Mirfield
“I want all the people of Mirfield to enjoy something I’ve been fortunate enough to take part in.”
And his Mirfield side were back in training pre-Christmas
as they gear up for their historic Challenge Cup match on Saturday
“We train on a Wednesday evening and a Saturday morning
and we try and make it a really family-like community
“Rugby League and life is hard enough
You can come to training if you’ve had a bad day and be around everybody – that’s the culture we want around the club
“We’ve had a really good response and hopefully we can kick on and raise our profile further.”
Proud of how far the club has come in such a short space of time
Lunt is enjoying every step of the journey:
I got lost a little bit - I wasn’t necessarily missing the rugby
but you start to miss the people around you
“I’m not from round here and when I retired
I feel part of the town and have that zest for rugby again
I love the game and I’m an avid supporter
coaching and giving back a bit of what I’ve had means a lot to me
so now I want to help people achieve their dreams.”
We want everyone to come and join – it’s not just the men’s team – there’s the women’s too
We’re looking at Masters and Tag in the future too
“Our ambition is the grow and become a hub of the town for people to come to
so if anyone wants to get in contact – whether this be through sponsorship or to take part in anything on game day – from playing to coaching to media. If there's anyone interested
please get in touch via our socials.”
Mirfield will take on Royal Navy in Round One of the Betfred Challenge Cup on Saturday 18 January
Saturday 7 June is Betfred Challenge Cup Finals Day 2025 – also including the Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup Final, AB Sundecks 1895 Cup Final, and RFL Champion Schools Year 7 Boys Final. Tickets are on sale now

• More trains to choose from and more seats
Our improvements will enable more trains to run between Manchester
Leeds and York with up to six fast services every hour between Leeds and Manchester and up to two stopping services for local connectivity.• Faster journeys so you can travel to your favourite towns and cities more quickly
Our fastest journey times are forecast to be 63-66 minutes between Manchester and York and 41-42 minutes between Manchester and Leeds

With a current workforce of around 2000 people
we estimate that could double over the course of the programme
We’ll employ an apprentice for every £4million spent.• Improved natural environments near the railway through 10% biodiversity net gain across the route
This will create or enhance habitats for wildlife. The multi-billion-pound Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) will bring this line into the 21st century with 70-miles of fully electric

As part of TRU’s First and Last Mile scheme
funding has been granted to waterways charity Canal & River Trust to complete the upgrade of the canal towpath between Shepley Bridge Marina and Station Road in Mirfield
with work starting next week (Monday 10 February)
The First and Last Mile programme aims to improve journeys to and from the stations along the TRU route
with plans for Mirfield now coming into fruition
The canal towpath from Shepley Bridge Marina to Station Road will be revamped to enhance pedestrian use
Such an upgrade will transform what has become a muddy
difficult route into an all-weather surface that will provide better connectivity between the surrounding areas and support accessibility
“Our First and Last Mile scheme is progressing well through multiple projects across the route
with the first of these projects to be completed in Spring this year
“The developments to Mirfield canal towpath that have been made possible by the scheme means better access for all
and Canal & River Trust’s work will greatly improve connectivity in the area.”
Enterprise Manager at Canal & River Trust
“Our charity is delighted to receive funding through TRU’s First and Last Mile scheme for such an important project
where we’ll enhance the towpath at Mirfield along the Calder & Hebble Navigation and significantly improve the pedestrian journey between Shepley Bridge Marina and Station Road
it’s vital for us to collaborate with other organisations to preserve our historic canals
Improvement works begin on Monday 10 February and the team is aiming to keep the towpath open along the stretch where the work is taking place
though there may be a closure when the tarmac is laid
“We will keep the people of Mirfield up to date with signage throughout the works
please visit our website at canalrivertrust.org.uk.”
The work being carried out along this section of the canal forms part of TRU’s wider plans for Mirfield
which include a major upgrade of Mirfield station
making them safer and more modernised whilst increased platform lengths will be able to handle longer trains with more passengers
Platform 3 will remain in service until 2027
when it will be removed to facilitate the construction of separated fast lines between Huddersfield and Dewsbury which will increase capacity further
Work is already underway on a new station entrance
whilst a new permanent footbridge with lifts will also be constructed to connect the new island platforms
making the station fully accessible from both the car park and from Station Road
Mind the Gap: Join the Place North Viability Gap Campaign
Essential rail upgrades were also carried out elsewhere in West Yorkshire with track renewals and signal testing taking place
Work at the West Yorkshire station is almost complete and includes a new station entrance
Transpennine Route Upgrade engineers have carried out works on Station Road and have now opened the new entrance
which leads directly onto the afore-mentioned new platform
More than 700m of track was installed to serve the platform and in addition
construction work was undertaken to allow the number of railway lines to increase from three to four
This will enable more trains to run through the station in future
Work still to be carried out includes the installation of an accessible footbridge
which is expected to begin in May and open at the end of the year

Knowl Park House Concept [Image: Kirklees Council]
Building works at Knowl Park House in Mirfield have been completed for a new state-of-the-art dementia care facility
with Kirklees Council making final preparations to welcome residents
The old two-storey building has been replaced with a high-tech
purpose-built facility that better meets the needs of people living with dementia
including those with physical disabilities
Located on Crowlees Road next to Knowl Park in Mirfield
the new facilities aim to provide dementia care for vulnerable residents and offer carers much-needed respite
The new facilities incorporate design features that ensure maximum flexibility and inclusivity
A key collaboration with the University of Stirling’s Dementia Services Design Centre (DSDC) has ensured that the facilities adhere to dementia design principles and meet the DSDC dementia design standards
From the colour of the paint on the walls to the layout of rooms
everything has been designed from the perspective of someone living with dementia
Modern amenities include a Home Therapy Zone with a homely open-plan lounge
and kitchen area; an Activity Zone featuring a large arts and crafts room; and a Wellbeing Zone with a sensory and cinema room and a spa
residents can make use of the latest assistive technology to help maintain their independence
This continues outside in the sensory garden
and all-weather-coated handrails throughout
allowing service users to move around freely
which operates Monday to Friday with potential expansion to evenings and weekends
the Centre for Excellence will offer advice and support for people with a dementia diagnosis
and adults and children with other physical and sensory disabilities
The centre includes a bungalow that serves as a mock-up of a Dementia Friendly home environment
showcasing the latest support techniques and practices in a safe and secure setting
There will also be opportunities for partnership working
with a focus on early intervention to help people stay well and independent at home for as long as possible
Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Health
expressed her excitement: “I am delighted to announce the completion of our fantastic
state-of-the-art day service facilities for people living with dementia
“This is such a major investment for the council as we look to focus our efforts and resources on areas of the market where there are fewer alternatives
“Having visited the facilities myself
I know they will make the lives of those living with dementia and their loved ones
“I look forward to seeing how service users interact and make use of the latest equipment and technology that will enable them to live more independently for as long as possible.”
added: “This project showcases what can be achieved when construction
“It’s a shining example of how we can deliver both outstanding facilities and meaningful social contributions
which is at the heart of what we do.”
Support from Knowl Park House is available by referral only

Two grassroots rugby league clubs are set to join forces in a landmark move that will see Huddersfield-based Spartans ARLFC relocate to Mirfield
founded in Almondbury in 2018 before relocating to Lepton in 2022
have become a respected name in Huddersfield’s rugby community
Built from the ground up by founder Craig Morgan
the club has achieved plenty in a short time – lifting multiple divisional titles and three Holliday Cups
as part of a new partnership with Mirfield ARLFC
the Spartans are preparing to take the next step in their evolution – joining forces with a fellow ambitious side just down the road
The merger will see Mirfield’s open age players and coaches join the Spartans setup for the remainder of 2025
ahead of a permanent move back to Mirfield under a single banner next year
Matches will continue this season at both Lepton Highlanders FC and in Mirfield
with plans to field two senior sides – one in the Yorkshire Men’s League Premier Division and one in the Merit League
Craig Morgan and son Kian celebrate a Holliday Cup victory in 2023
it marks a new chapter in a proud tradition of grassroots development
especially given the shared community-first ethos of both clubs
Morgan said: “I think it couldn’t have come at a better time with two solid clubs – Mirfield having a great juniors set up
a plethora of great and talented open age players and great facilities
“Joining as one brings very exciting times for everyone
and I’m looking forward to seeing how far we can progress and see what we can achieve as one family and one unit.”
Morgan’s own journey with Spartans has been deeply personal
James and Josh pulling on the club’s shirt alongside him
and many of the team’s players regarded as family
He paid tribute to the contribution of late friend and coaching partner Fred Francis
saying: “Fred would have been 100% behind this
“We’re proud to take the Spartan name across to Mirfield and continue our mission together.”
who helped re-establish open age rugby in Mirfield in 2022
said: “It’s a privilege to be working with Craig Morgan to make this happen
“Craig has worked tirelessly to build the Spartans club from the ground up
His own story is inspirational and we feel extremely fortunate to be playing a role in helping it continue
“This new partnership will ensure the Spartans name stays alive
while fully respecting the club’s history and roots as it makes the move to Mirfield.”
Almondbury Spartans pull off Holliday Cup upset and it’s a triumph for togetherness and family

The Royal Navy completed an impressive comeback to beat Mirfield 26-20 and book their place in the second round of the Challenge Cup
That makes it two military teams in the second round after the British Army beat the RAF in Aldershot.
Despite being eight points behind with just minutes to go
a resilient Senior Service attack did enough to get the Navy the result they were looking for in Yorkshire
After last week's match was postponed due to cold weather, a number of key players
And the Navy struggled in parts of their performance
failing to match the intensity of their amateur hosts who were making their debut in the competition
Dave Brown gave them the perfect start with the first converted try but Mirfield roared back into the contest with three unanswered tries
The Band of Brothers hit back through a well-taken try from Rhys Joel but a stoppage for a serious Mirfield player injury derailed any momentum
Mirfield's Zinzan Barden suffered a nasty concussion and was taken to hospital
but is now recovering well according to Mirfield's social media accounts
After a near 30-minute delay and a number of discussions on whether the game would continue
the action resumed with another Mirfield try
It meant the Navy were staring at defeat and exit from the competition at 20-12 down so they needed a figurehead to inspire them over the line
and captain in Brodie Lee Butler's absence
He laid it on a plate for two tries from Johnny Stoppard and Jack Ray
The celebrations will not last very long though as attention turns to their second round fixture next week at Burnaby Road

in partnership with Kirklees Council and Canal & River Trust
has released its plans to upgrade the canal towpath between Shepley Bridge Marina and Station Road
The rail upgrade programme will also provide improvements to Mirfield Memorial Park
The proposals come as part of TRU’s ‘First and Last Mile’ programme
which aims to improve journeys to and from the stations along the route between Manchester and York
The innovative scheme has pressed ahead with plans for the Mirfield station area and is currently running a public consultation until 31st August 2024. Park and canal users, residents and businesses are being encouraged to give their views online at https://www.kirklees.gov.uk/beta/countryside-parks-and-open-spaces/mirfield-memorial-ground.aspx
people can also view the plans and concept designs at a drop-in event at Mirfield Memorial Ground on Thursday 29th August between 3pm and 6pm
Staff from Kirklees Council and Canal & River Trust will be present to answer any questions and welcome thoughts from any interested parties
Kirklees Cabinet Member for Environment and Highways said
“We are delighted Mirfield Memorial Park has secured funding from TRU’s First and Last Mile scheme
This will enable the council to improve various entrance points to the park
will also improve the access points between the park and canal
Together the works will provide improved accessibility to the park and towpath for residents
as well as enhancing an alternative ‘green’ route to the railway station for rail users
“This project is in addition to the funding secured for the play park as part of the Playable Spaces Scheme.”
The canal towpath from Shepley Bridge Marina to Station Road will be revamped to allow for enhanced pedestrian use
with an agreement also in place with Kirklees Council Highways to provide an improved crossing point on Lowlands Road to enable better access between the footway network and the canal
Enterprise Manager at the Canal & River Trust
“We know how popular this section of towpath is along the Calder & Hebble Navigation which is well used by the local community and among our canal users and we’re delighted that funding has been secured
“As a charity it’s so important that we work with other organisations to keep our historic canals alive
This towpath upgrade project is a fantastic example of how we can work together to make canals more welcoming and attractive not only to local people but also visiting boaters
which bring important economic benefits to the local communities
“We strongly encourage people to take a look at these proposals and have their say on how they can be improved.”
Upgrades to Mirfield Memorial Park include play area improvements
accessibility improvements from Gill Bridge and Hurst Lane into the park
with new Petanque pistes proposed as well as renovations to the steps of Parkfield Crescent
The goal of the scheme upon completion within Mirfield is for the residents and visitors to enjoy vastly improved accessibility to the station with better natural spaces and facilities throughout the area
