Merton Council has named Charles Holland Architects the winner of its competition for a ‘bold and striking’ new £90,000 temporary bandstand in Mitcham
The winning multidisciplinary team will now work with local people to co-design and then deliver a new temporary and re-usable bandstand for Mitcham Town Centre that will be used from July to September for the next three years
Charles Holland Architects – working with fabricator Raskl – was chosen ahead of an undisclosed shortlist of rival teams to win the commission
The project aims to boost footfall by drawing on the history of an earlier bandstand that was constructed in the 1920s on the Fair Green in Mitcham Town Centre but was removed in the mid-20th century
The completed bandstand will be called ‘What Goes Around’
a reference to its use of recycled materials as well as the return of a bandstand to the area after 100 years
councillor and cabinet member for civic pride and climate change Eleanor Stringer said: ‘The new bandstand will be a celebration of Mitcham’s history and heritage as well as its future
‘Mitcham’s community is so proud of this area and wants to see improvements made
The new bandstand will be at the heart of Fair Green
and is one of many ways we are revitalising the area – bringing it to life for everyone who lives
‘We’re delighted to be working with Charles Holland Architects
who will reach out to the community to involve them in this exciting project.’
The latest project aims to deliver a new ‘bold and striking’ temporary bandstand structure on Fair Green in the centre of Mitcham
robust and safe’ structure is expected to be freestanding with no permanent fixtures made to the ground
Charles Holland Architects practice principal Charles Holland said: ‘This is a lovely project to be involved in
something that we hope will add an important element of fun and spontaneity to Mitcham Fair Green
‘We are very happy to be working with the team at Merton Council
and the people of Mitcham in developing What Goes Around.’

Her drawings as a child may have started out as smiley heads with legs
17-year-old Ruby Mitcham became the youngest ever artist to feature in the Society of Scottish Artists’ prestigious national art exhibition
which since it was founded in 1891 has shown the work of painters like Edvard Munch and Picasso
Despite only having oil painted for two years
Ruby is already regarded as one of the most talented young artists in the UK
She paints from an easel in her bedroom at Gordonstoun School where she is on a two year art scholarship
A stunning portrait of Ruby’s best friend and roommate Iona Watters
was selected for the exhibition at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh
‘I felt lost for words when I found out one of my paintings would be in the RSA,’ Ruby said
It’s so grand and imposing from the outside and full of world-famous paintings
‘I walk by it regularly and now I have to pinch myself and remind myself that my art was on display there
For A Scottish Lass Iona was the only one willing to sit for me
as she’s a beautiful dancer and has a serenity and strength about her
I wanted that all to come across in the painting.’
Her earliest memories of art are of ceramic painting
or painting on rocks and making things out of clay and plasticine
‘My mum recently looked out some of my early drawings,’ Ruby says
‘My first attempts at people were pretty much smiley heads with legs coming out of them… Minimalist
‘I have always really enjoyed making things
In my first school we were so lucky to have a great art department that pretty much let us experiment with clay
‘I once made a whole outfit for myself out of neon green paper and wore it
I taught myself crochet and I’ve recently been making things from wood.’
her art began to flourish two years ago when she discovered oil painting
‘I actually really surprised myself that I could paint
it’s like going to my happy place,’ she said
They’re my favourite medium and I find it hard to experiment with others
I didn’t even know I had to mix them with oil or whether to use brushes or a palette knife…Thank you
but now I look back and see all the things I hadn’t quite learnt then.’
‘He is really an inspiration to me,’ she said
‘At 81 he is still living life to the full
‘His whole life has been packed with outrageous activities and this was just a rare quiet moment he had the year he broke his back.’
Ruby often trawls through her photographs for inspiration when she is trying to decide what to paint
which she says can often be the most frustrating part
She sometimes uses grids to sketch out the image but can also do it freehand
but try to also stand frequently to get that perspective and see the painting at the height it’ll most likely be viewed
‘I work with a palette and a little linseed oil
but I also use a bright daylight bulb with no lampshade
podcasts or tv and if I’ve been on my own for too long
I’ll encourage one of my family to chat while I work
I was just so delighted that I’d found something I loved doing
‘I can paint happily for a whole day and then get up the next day and continue
I couldn’t imagine having a job that would excite me
‘I can’t imagine not having art in my future
as long as I’m able to continue making things

Merton council has sold its loss-making Mitcham car park to a major housing association in an effort to boost development in the area
residents insist the purchase of the Majestic Way site by Clarion Housing must result in development that “recognises Mitcham’s distinct culture and village character”
The Majestic Way site covers a large area in central Mitcham
and includes the now-closed St Marks car park as well as a number of retail units
plans to build new affordable housing and “improved and diversified commercial spaces” on the site
secretary of local civic society said: “The Majestic Way site is the key to the future of Mitcham Village
We congratulate Clarion on taking a lead on its future and welcome the commitment it has given to “community-driven redevelopment”
“This needs to recognise Mitcham’s distinct culture and village character
The more Mitcham tries to compete with nearby centres like Wimbledon
we have asked Clarion to engage with local people about their ambitions for Mitcham Village before plans are drawn up.”
Clarion is also working with the council on its £1.8 billion Merton Regeneration Project
This project will see the replacement of 1,000 existing homes and the construction of 1,800 new homes across Eastfields
said: “We are poised to deliver a project that respects the area’s heritage while paving the way for its bright future.”

A Moray pupil has become the youngest artist to feature at a prestigious national art exhibition
only celebrated her 17th birthday in September and is already regarded as one of the most talented young artists in the UK
a portrait of her bestfriend and roommate Iona Watters is currently being showcased at the Society of Scottish Artists (SSA) annual exhibition
taking place at the Royal Scottish Academy (RSA)
Ruby met Iona in year nine and the pair instantly became best friends
the pair are in year 12 and choose to be roommates every year
told the Press and Journal: “We met on the first day of Year Nine
“We had a choreographed dance routine within the first five minutes of meeting each other
“The two of us hit it off instantly.”
This isn’t the first portrait of Iona that Ruby has created – in fact
Iona has said she is usually the subject ‘partially out of convenience’ as they’re always together
The duo are also both a part of the school’s latest production – Peter Pan
Despite Ruby always having loved “making things”
Ruby’s passion for art began to flourish two years ago when she says she realised she could paint
Ruby’s painting called ‘A Scottish Lass’ – a portrait of Iona – was one of just over 200 works selected by the SSA from more than 2,000 entries
“Part of the reason I wanted to paint Iona is because she is so graceful,” she explained
“We’ve done most dance shows together
and I just wanted to capture that grace and elegance.”
the SSA has exhibited work from artists including Picasso
When Ruby was first told her painting was in the exhibition
She added: “When I first found out it was in the exhibition
because everything had been so chaotic beforehand with my artwork blowing up
I don’t think the full gravity of it came across yet
“When I went to Edinburgh and actually saw it with Iona
I realised ‘I’ve grown up here and now I’m in this exhibition.'”
Iona said it was ‘surreal’ to see a painting of herself in the exhibition
“It felt pretty surreal to see the portrait in the gallery,” she said
Ruby joined the school in Year Nine on a music scholarship – she plays the violin and sings as a soprano
Her accolades include recently winning the Fleming-Wyfold Young Person’s Art Competition for a portrait of a girl who is a drummer in the school pipe band
The 17-year-old is now in the first year of a two-year senior art scholarship at Gordonstoun
Art teacher, Wendi Van-Hoof said: “Ruby is a fantastic artist who has truly honed her craft over the past two years at Gordonstoun.”
Ruby and her family had no idea she had such a talent until she first painted a portrait of her father
said: “Ruby has always been creative but we were totally taken aback when she produced her first oil painting at 15
really showing his personality and her talent
but we are a bit in awe of how far she has come in such a short period of time.”

A supremely gifted Moray pupil has produced this stunning portrait of her former head teacher
Ruby Mitcham is regarded as one of the most talented young artists in the UK
who only began painting in oil two years ago
is currently halfway through an art scholarship at Gordonstoun which counts King Charles amongst its former pupils
Lisa Kerr asked Ruby to paint her portrait just before she left in July to take the reins at another school
I called my mum and almost couldn’t talk sensibly to her
It’s a privilege to have been asked and to leave something on display here that I’ve painted.”
The teenager recently became the youngest artist to feature in the Society of Scottish Artists’ annual exhibition in Edinburgh
which has previously featured work by Picasso and Munch
She based her portrait on a series of photos and started it last summer
the school offered to fund my place on one of their Arctic sailing trips to Norway
I had around a week before I went to get the bulk of it done so I worked full days and some nights
I had the advantage of returning to the painting with fresh eyes
I then spent a less intense period until early September finishing and tweaking areas
“I wanted to incorporate the Gordonstoun tartan colours somehow
you can see these subtly within the background
which is also a little reminiscent of the northern lights
so I learned a lot through doing all the stages
I now have some really exciting commissions booked in
but don’t want to spill the beans on them too soon
Ruby added: “Gordonstoun is my second home and has really supported me in becoming the person I am
I like the idea of having a tangible connection to school even when I move on.”
The teenager has now joined a list of well-known artists
whose work is featured in the North Room at Gordonstoun House
who’s now in charge of George Watson’s College in Edinburgh
is suitably impressed with the finished portrait of herself
She said: “I have always been aware that Ruby is a very talented pupil
“It was a privilege to see her grow and develop during my time as Principal
Asking her to paint the portrait was a unique opportunity to put a pupil’s piece of work at the heart of school life
“There is a real depth and dimension to Ruby’s paintings and she has produced a piece of art that will remain relevant for decades to come
“I’m thankful to Ruby for the piece of work she has done and she can be proud that her painting will now be part of the future of Gordonstoun.”
Jock Night, the hit 2023 play which explores the seedy underworld of Manchester‘s Gay Village
is coming back to a theatre near you this summer – and with a brand new cast of hunks to boot
which was written by Adam Zane and features its cast wearing little more than a jockstrap and harness for most of the play
promises to explore “thought-provoking issues in the LGBTQ+ community through the lens of comedy and compassion.”
which will be staged at Hope Mill Theatre in Manchester
followed by a run at the Seven Dials Playhouse in London
intimacy and addiction in the gay community
Joining the new cast is Matthew Mitcham, aka the first openly gay man to win an Olympic gold medal. Mitcham made his UK stage debut in the 2023 gay play Strangers In Between.
In recent years Mitcham has attracted attention for his burgeoning OnlyFans career. The athlete
who has been open about his own struggles with drug abuse in the past
commented on the casting: “When I was asked to audition for the role of Simon (the drug addict has-been) my first thought was ‘typecast’!”
“Drug addiction and sex addiction are both powerful in their own right
but chemsex addiction is exponentially more insidious,” he went on to say
“And the taboo nature of both sex and drugs makes it extremely difficult for people to reach out for help
“I’m hoping this play will leave a lasting impression where it’s needed most,” Mitcham concluded
Also on board is Hollyoaks star Gabriel Clark, and stage actors Eddie Ahrens and James Colebrook. Holby City actor David Paisley will also reprise his role from the 2023 run of Jock Night as Ben
Paisley was previously honoured at the Attitude Pride Awards in 2021 for his contributions to diversity and inclusion
“I’m super excited to be stepping back into my jock strap and harness to play Ben in Jock Night again,” Paisley commented
“I had such a blast during the last run of the show.”
“The show charts the lives of five men involved in the clubbing and chemsex scene in Manchester
across several months of a year,” Paisley said
“It’s a topic that feels increasingly relevant as chemsex has had some media attention lately
after years of being a bit of a hidden epidemic.”
Jock Night will run from 20 – 31 May in Hope Mill Theatre in Manchester, and from 3 – 15 June in the Seven Dials Playhouse in London. Tickets are available to purchase here.
this historic villa features an opulent modern extension with luxury living spaces
when Andrea and Darren Hoppe purchased their circa-1880 villa – affectionately known as “Ashleigh House” – there was no modern renovation
It was the historic charm of the Victorian villa that enchanted Andrea when she first stepped into the property
I loved the feel and the presence of the original house,” says Andrea
“Not knowing what council would want from an extension
I didn’t have my heart set on whether it was something that was going to be totally modern or whether it would have to be something that’s kept in the same style or era.”
Andrea says the location was a key drawcard
being close to schools and just a six-kilometre drive from the Adelaide CBD
there was the grand size of the 5000-square-metre block
The previous owner ran an animal sanctuary on the property
but her animal welfare efforts meant she had little time to spend on the garden
before Andrea and Darren could move in in 2014
one of the first things they did was to re-landscape
They also built a breathtaking contemporary extension designed by Section Six Architects (formerly Alexander Brown Architects)
with floor-to-ceiling glass windows looking out onto a heated swimming pool
a full-size tennis court and expansive lawns
in line with the Burra Charter heritage procedures
required them to build a modern-looking extension that would be distinguished from the Victorian home
“I spent a lot of time on Pinterest trying to find something that I loved
and I kept getting drawn to the glass pavilion because it made the original house the feature,” says Andrea
Andrea says that because the house is heritage-listed
there was not much they could do to the exterior apart from replacing the verandah’s 1970s terracotta tiles with mosaic tiling
Andrea and Darren have reconfigured the layout
knocking out walls to make the space feel more open
it was a matter of knocking out those little walls and building substantial rooms,” says Andrea
They also built en-suites in each of the four bedrooms
A priority was to take advantage of the great views from the home
“Because of the outlook to the expansive gardens and the Hills
the main thing was having lots of light and big windows,” says Andrea
that followed through the idea of the glass pavilion; you can basically see all the way through the house
Other highlights of the home include a 14-seat home theatre with a 120-inch screen and Paradigm sound system
and a climate-controlled wine cellar with a glass wall
Andrea says landscaping was challenging because of the property’s size
tennis court and basketball court were must-haves
“It was about keeping the vegetation and the heritage trees and putting in the court
pool and grass so the kids can kick a football without having to go to an oval,” says Andrea
They also installed an outdoor kitchen and dining area
Andrea tells SALIFE that her favourite feature of the home is the master bedroom
“I love waking up and looking at the view in the master bedroom,” she says
But after around a decade of calling Ashleigh House home
Andrea and Darren have decided now is the right time to downsize
Andrea says she will miss the space and the lifestyle the most
