Watch on iPlayerJane LewisBBC Sport Scotland Senior ReporterTen-man Motherwell earned a brilliant win at Dens Park to secure their Scottish Premiership status for next season as Dundee manager Tony Docherty was left claiming that officials "contrived" to disallow a "brilliant" goal.
Motherwell had John Koutrombis sent off on 80 minutes, but second-half goals from Tom Sparrow and Tawanda Maswanhise gave them victory and took them 10 points clear of second bottom with three games to go.
Dundee led at half-time after a wonder strike from Mexican midfielder Antonio Portales, who then had a similar hit ruled out for offside later in the first half with team-mate Clark Robertson ruled offside in the build-up.
"I'm not abdicating responsibility as Dundee manager for losing the game," Docherty said. "But we're in a situation now where we've got officials that are finding a way to disallow goals.
"There's no doubt the opposition gets a lift from that decision. We should be going in at 2-0. The officials contrive to find a way to disallow that goal. I just think it's a disgrace to have made that decision."
Defeat means Dundee are not safe of relegation trouble, with Docherty's side two points above the relegation play-off place and eight above bottom.
The hosts started full of intent and kept busy returning Motherwell goalkeeper Aston Oxborough, who kept out Oluwaseun Adewumi then the rebound from Ziyad Larkeche.
Oxborough was at it again to deny Dundee captain Joe Shaughnessy, while Callum Slattery unleashed a cracker that came close to giving the visitors the lead.
Portales showed the way to goal in spectacular fashion. From a long throw-in, the defender controlled and bent the ball into the top corner.
The Dundee fans were still waxing lyrical over the hit when the Mexican was at it again. It was almost an exact carbon copy, the only difference was he finished with his left foot this time.
Unfortunately for him and Dundee, his wonder strike was ruled out for offside after a VAR check.
Koutrombis lifted over before half-time and the visitors started the second half well. Lennon Miller danced into the area and the ball fell kindly to Sparrow, who finished off well.
That goal set up quite the finish at Dens Park. Home midfielder Josh Mulligan raced forward, was in a good position in plenty of space, but his shot was way over.
Well were then depleted. Right-back Koutroumbis was initially shown a yellow for his lunge on Ziyad Larkeche and, after another VAR intervention, it was upgraded to a red.
While many might have fancied Dundee to stretch the 10 men, the visitors were not overly effected. Substitute Maswanhise forced Trevor Carson into a smart save, Dan Casey smashed an effort off the woodwork and Tony Watt shot wide.
And they got the winner when Maswanhise met a lovely ball and nodded it past Carson.
Casey could have added another just before full-time but somehow shot wide.
While Dundee were full of intent and desire in the first half, playing with plenty of confidence, they dropped off in the second half and their disallowed goal was at the centre of that.
Portales' goal was a beauty, but when his second was disallowed for offside against a team-mate, it almost proved a turning point and they are under severe pressure going into the last three games.
Their heads did not quite go down, but Motherwell looked to receive a lift from not going in at half-time two down.
Dundee did not quite find the same level in the second half and they paid the price. It was a sore loss, especially as they were up against a numerically disadvantaged Motherwell.
Docherty cannot allow his frustrations over refereeing decisions to fester as he prepares his side for massive games.
Motherwell definitely got a lift from the decision to rule out the second Portales strike.
They came out for the second half fired up and even the loss of a player did not affect them negatively. They played as a team all after the same ambition and it was little surprise when they popped up with a winner.
They showed hunger to get forward and were organised at the back when they had to be.
Now safe from becoming embroiled in any relegation play-off battle, they can play without pressure for the remaining three games. They will take so much from this game though, and will want to build upon it for sure.

'We're finding ways to disallow goals' - Docherty
Dundee manager Tony Docherty: "I'm really, really angry and really frustrated. And most of that is directed towards the officials. We're finding a way in this country with our officials to disallow goals. The officials are killing the game.
"I will take full responsibility for my team contriving to lose that game. But, if we go in at half-time like we should, justifiably, 2-0 up, the dynamic of the game is totally different. If we brush this under the carpet again and don't address it then it's a disgrace."
Motherwell manager Michael Wimmer: "I'm very happy, very proud of the guys. They did well, especially in the second half - and the first half, we lacked a little bit of energy and also the defence from the two throw-ins was not good enough.
"We spoke about this at half-time, but the second half was brilliant with certain shots on goal and also after the red card there was no feeling that we could not win the game."

Michael Wimmer's side did it the hard way but are guaranteed Premiership safety.
The substitute sealed a second-half comeback despite Johnny Koutroumbis receiving a VAR-assisted red card in the 80th minute.
Dundee had taken a half-time lead through a brilliant strike from Antonio Portales, who soon had a second goal disallowed.
But Tom Sparrow levelled with Motherwell’s first shot on target in the 59th minute and the visitors showed ambition after going down to 10 men.
They came close on several occasions before Maswanhise rose to head Dom Thompson’s back-post cross into the top corner in the first minute of time added on.
The win moved the Steelmen 10 points above second-bottom Ross County with three games left while Dundee remain in a precarious position, two points ahead of the Staggies.
Aston Oxborough was back in the Motherwell goal for the first time since breaking a bone in his hand in early January and he made his mark early on with an excellent stop from Oluwaseun Adewumi before getting up to save Ziyad Larkeche’s follow-up.
The goalkeeper then pushed away Joe Shaughnessy’s header but he was motionless as Portales volleyed into the top corner from 16 yards in the 31st minute after a long throw.
It was the Mexican defender’s first league goal of the season and he looked like he had doubled his tally after another long throw.
Portales hit an equally-impressive strike into the same part of the net with his left foot but the goal was disallowed by the VAR team for offside against Clark Robertson in the build-up.
Motherwell were lacking a cutting edge and Callum Slattery failed to hit the target from their only two chances of note in the first half, hitting the first over the bar and being tackled by Shaughnessy as he weighed up a shot.
Well boss Michael Wimmer brought on Maswanhise at the interval but there was little immediate improvement in the visitors’ threat and Oxborough saved from Lyall Cameron.
But Motherwell levelled as Sparrow got his second goal in as many games. Lennon Miller’s run into the box made the difference and Sparrow steered the ball into the roof of the net when the ball broke.
Josh Mulligan fired over from the edge of the Motherwell box and Cameron turned the ball just past his own goal following Maswanhise’s square ball as both sides looked for a winner.
The game seemed to have tipped in Dundee’s favour when referee Kevin Clancy was called to the monitor by video assistant Callum Scott to re-examine a late tackle from Koutroumbis on Larkeche.
Clancy had not awarded a free-kick but he booked the Australian before then upgrading the punishment to a red after studying the footage.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Motherwell looked the more threatening side in the closing stages.
Substitute Ewan Wilson had a shot turned past the post by Trevor Carson and Dan Casey headed off the bar from the resulting corner.
Maswanhise then stunned the home support and could have added to Motherwell’s lead on the counter-attack before being denied by Carson and seeing Casey knock the rebound wide with the goal gaping.

THE Scottish Championship ended in dramatic fashion last night
But as Falkirk secured their sensational back-to-back promotions
their opponents at Falkirk Stadium were going the other way
They briefly threatened to spoil Falkirk's party anyway
but the Bairns turned it around to win 3-1 and send Accies down with an eight-point gap to ninth-placed Airdrie
And Motherwell today took the chance to rub salt into the wounds of their rivals
'Well supporters were spotted unfurling a banner aimed at Accies at their game against Dundee
The 'out of Hamilton' line is reference to Accies chiefs announcing that they are moving out of their New Douglas Park home.
That's after a cash row with the current owners of the stadium - although Hamilton say they've kicked off discussions with South Lanarkshire Council aimed at finding a suitable venue to build a new stadium in the area.
For now though, the club will relocate to the former home of Clyde, Broadwood Stadium, as the League Two side complete a remarkable stadium merry-go-round and themselves move into New Douglas Park.
"Arrangements are now being made to relocate the club from the start of next season to Broadwood Stadium in Cumbernauld
with the long-term aim of building a new stadium in Hamilton."
'Well fans saw their team fall behind to Dundee after unfurling the banner
as Juan Portales steered the Dens Park side further clear of the relegation spots
But Tom Sparrow equalised for Michael Wimmer's men
and a late Tawanda Maswanhise winner ensured the Steelmen's safety from relegation

recent news about the extent of Jota’s injury might dampen the mood to a large extent
Jota was substituted in the first half and was later seen on crutches during the Hoops’ title celebrations
Although it was initially thought to be just a sore meniscus
new reports have confirmed the injury is much more serious
which will come as a major disappointment for the fans
and he is expected to be out for six to nine months
which puts his return well into next season and could shake up the club's summer transfer plans
Jota won't be Celtic's only injury absentee against Rangers this weekend
It looks like the club are dealing with a lot of problems right now
Brendan Rodgers said (via The Scottish Sun): "We’ve got a few knocks. Jota will be out and sadly for us and for him he'll be out for a period of time, probably six to nine months. It’s the cruciate it was worse than we’d hoped really so he starts on his journey of recovery from that now.
"Ali Johnston won't be available. Ali's been needing an injection into his hip that he's had for a period of time to ensure he was ready for the cup final and have enough preparation.
"We decided we would do that after the Dundee United game.
"So that puts him out of the weekend and most probably the St Mirren game.
"That gives him a few weeks to be ready and available for the cup final.
"Dane Murray had had an issue with his knee and he'll be out for the rest of the season and be ready for pre-season."
Celtic still have some important matches ahead. Among them is their Scottish Cup final against Aberdeen, which they need to win to complete the domestic treble.
With Jota out for the foreseeable future, things could get tricky for Rodgers in the attacking third, especially if someone else ends up getting injured.
The Hoops will need to sign a reliable backup in the upcoming transfer window to cover for Jota until he returns to the team.

“It was always in the back of my head that I would be a free agent in the summer
but I always believed in my own abilities and that I could get offered terms
I didn’t want to doubt myself because that’s when things could start to dip.”
Ross was faced with the arrival of a new manager and only a short time to impress before his deal ran out
That meant he had to up his game and give it everything in the hope of being rewarded
“I was thinking about the small period of time to impress the gaffer before the end of the season,” Ross admitted
“I’m glad I got to train with him when he first arrived so he could see me
and he’s said how well I’ve been doing.”
Ross’ big moment came in the 2023/24 season when he helped secure a point with the last kick of the ball against Ross County at Fir Park
poking it home in stoppage time in a 3-3 draw
he feels he has matured as a player and as a person
“It feels like a wee while ago just because there’s been a few stepping stones since then,” he explained
playing with the reserves and under-18s here and signing new deals
Training with Motherwell’s first-team has been huge for me
but to do that and then add in training with Annan at night and play games with men regularly
“I’ve just been taking everything as it comes
but I feel more like a man than just a boy now
I’ve had a bit of time where I’ve been on the bench at Motherwell
travelling and prepping like a professional footballer
“But I just felt the loan move would be best so I could get some games in for me to try and come back to Motherwell and be more involved than just travelling and on the bench
“On the drive down to my first training session with Annan
I was nervous and thinking about what it was going to be like
I wondered if the players would even like me
“It’s just because I didn’t know what to expect because I’d never been in that kind of environment before; it’s always been the same club throughout
the spell with the League One side has been a successful one
and the winger has built up a healthy amount of minutes and has found the back of the net three times
“The players have looked after me,” Ross stated
“Willie Gibson has been great because he has a lot of experience
He demands a lot and wants high intensity from everyone
and you’ve got players like Paul McGowan and Josh Todd
who have been with different clubs over the years
and they give you lots of information on the pitch
“It’s just about listening and taking that in when playing
I think overall the time there has helped me develop my character
“Having that feeling of being disappointed that I’ve not made the starting 11 or whatever
Feeling and experiencing those moments are important because every player has them
Dealing with them at my age is important.”
Annan are battling to avoid the drop in League One
and Ross has had to deal with the pressure of playing in highly important games
he will apply himself fully and will then return to Motherwell for pre-season with his own ambitions in mind
“I’ll give it everything to help the club achieve its goals between now and the end of the season,” Ross said
My thoughts are always going to be about playing in the first-team at Motherwell
I’ll see if I can come back one of the fitter boys
and if I can get in the manager’s eye-line and he likes me
“I want to be playing for Motherwell; this is the club I’ve grown up playing for
I can focus on football and not contract stuff.”
The women of steel battled league leaders Hibernian to the final whistle but were forced to leave the Scottish capital with nothing
as the Edinburgh side capitalised on two lapses in concentration in their march towards the league title
Motherwell started brightly and the performance certainly looked promising in the opening 15 minutes
as the visitors pressed the Hibernian backline
but the hosts were quick to capitalise on a mistake in the Motherwell backline
McGovern netted early in the first-half to give the hosts the lead
before Reilly doubled the hosts advantage seconds before the close of the half
Paul Brownlie – whom earlier in the day had been nominated for SWPL Manager of the Year award – named a much changed side from the Scottish Cup Semi-Final last weekend
Brodie Greenwood and Sienna McGoldrick assumed their places in midfield
with defender Jo Addie captaining the side
Motherwell looked threatening from the beginning and were menacing when going forward
with chances falling to both Louisa Boyes and Bailley Collins
the hosts showed no signs of easing their SWPL title charge
and reaped the rewards seven minutes later
A weak back-pass gifted the Hibees possession in the Motherwell 18-yard-box
and McGovern raced through before watching her shot trickle over the line
The home side capitalised on Motherwell’s frustrations and continued to turn up the heat moments before the half-time whistle
a beautifully weighted corner found its way to Reilly in the box
who rose highest to power home into the top-corner
leaving Mutch static in the Motherwell goal
The Motherwell stopper was soon called into action
reacting brilliantly with an outstretched leg to deny Hibs a second from close-range
but despite chances from Katie Rice and Eilidh Austin coming close
with positives to take for the women of steel
as they turn their attention to the weekend when they take on title chasers Rangers at Broadwood Stadium

The 18-year-old enhanced his reputation further on Sunday when he was declared PFA Scotland SPFL Young Player of the Year.
The 18-year-old enhanced his reputation further on Sunday when he was declared PFA Scotland SPFL Young Player of the Year ahead of fellow nominees Arne Engels of Celtic, Rangers striker Hamza Igamane and Hearts forward James Wilson.
The prize came after Miller helped Well retain their top-flight status for a 41st consecutive season with a 2-1 win at Dundee.
The teenager looks unlikely to be involved in the club’s next campaign, certainly after August, amid interest at home and abroad for the Scotland squad player.
“We’ve got three games left at Motherwell until the end of the season, so that’s my main focus and then we will see what happens,” he said.
“We knew getting safety as soon as we could would be an extra bonus and we can play with the shackles off and really enjoy it.”
Miller was the subject of several failed bids in January and has grown accustomed to dealing with speculation over his future.
“You need to learn to deal with it very quickly because I have been linked with numerous clubs,” he said.
“I try to keep that to the one side and focus on every day as it comes and try to enjoy every day.
“You need to enjoy it. It’s the best job in the world so why not enjoy it?”
It is an approach that has been drilled into him from an early age at Motherwell, who continue to produce Scotland internationals.
“It’s the coaching staff,” Miller said. “From such a young age they encourage you to enjoy it, which I think is the main ingredient for every good player.
“There is obviously some of that down to ability but the coaching is top. I can’t talk highly enough of the coaches I have had and it was just about enjoying it.”
On receiving the prize, Miller added: “It’s pretty hard to put into words. It’s a proud moment for me and my family. I’m just thankful to the people that voted for me, the players I play with every week and the coaching staff.”
Andy Halliday and Calum Ward have both signed contract extensions
Andy Halliday has signed a contract extension that will see him remain at Fir Park for the 2025/26 campaign
The 33-year-old has made over 50 appearances for the club since arriving in January 2024 and played in every match during the 24/25 season
and I was really eager to extend that,” Andy Halliday adds
“It’s really encouraging to see the groundwork being put in place for next season
which I think everyone should be optimistic about
“We’ve had some special moments this season
including Hampden and the Friday night win over Dundee United
which are the moments that make you appreciate where you play your football
I want to thank all the fans for their support since I arrived
and I’ll get back to work once again.”
Scoring four goals and assisting four times
he was awarded the Players’ Player of the Year award for his consistency and durability throughout the campaign
“I’ve been so impressed by Andy since I arrived,” manager Michael Wimmer said
“He has trained and played at such a high level all the time
and it’s great to get him signed up for next season
He is a role-model professional for every other player and a great character to have in the dressing room
“We’re continuing to sign players for next season
and I’m glad we’ve been able to make progress in that department
as there has been a lot of work going on behind the scenes.”
Calum Ward signed a one-year contract extension
with the club holding the option of a further year
“Calum is a great guy and has shown an excellent attitude,” Michael Wimmer added
“I was keen to get him on board for next season
and it will be interesting to see the competition for the goalkeeping position.”
The goalkeeper arrived on deadline day in February
initially signing a contract until the end of the current season
“The club have been brilliant with me
and the last few months have been great,” Calum Ward said
“I will keep working hard in training and will be looking to impress
and we’re constantly pushing each other
I’m looking forward to the rest of my time here.”

Motherwell took a major step towards securing their Premiership status on Saturday, winning 3-2 against bottom side St Johnstone. Callum Slattery scored his fifth goal of the season as he continues to make up for lost time through injury, with Johnny Koutroumbis netting his first in Motherwell colours also.
Tom Sparrow continues his fine season, scoring his fifth in all competitions. That result means Motherwell cannot finish bottom this season and are safe from automatic relegation.
Dundee are in the middle of a battle to avoid the relegation playoff spot but produced a terrific 1-0 victory over Hearts last Saturday to help boost their chances.
The result moved them two points clear of Ross County with four games to go. Simon Murray has been a key component for the Dee all season. His 20 goals this season saw him nominated for the PFA Player of the Year award this week alongside Celtic trio Kuhn, McGregor and Maeda.
With five games to go, and the potential of a relegation scrap looming, Motherwell knew a win against bottom-side St Johnstone would lift them away from any danger.
The game got off to the worst possible start for Michael Wimmer, as he watched his side concede to a Mackenzie Kirk strike early in the first-half. But his side rallied, and after a number of dangerous attacks, Callum Slattery and Johnny Koutroumbis had the Steelmen ahead at the break.
Tom Sparrow added a third to seemingly kill the game off, until St Johnstone found the back of the net for a second time to setup a nervous end to proceedings.
However, the points would stay in North Lanarkshire and with four games left, Motherwell’s target will be 7th place.
Lennon Miller has been nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Year award for the second year running.
The 18-year-old has continued his upward rise, making 34 appearances in all competitions this season. The midfielder has scored four goals and assisted six times this season.
Having cemented his place in the starting 11 last season, Miller has remained an ever-present in the Motherwell midfield. After a number of injuries, having already become Motherwell’s youngest ever player back in 2022, Miller became Motherwell’s youngest ever captain.
He had the armband for the Steelmen’s trip to Hampden in the Premier Sports Cup semi-final.
Maturing and ticking off further milestones, he would be rewarded with his first ever call-up to the senior Scotland side in March.
Narrowly missing out on this award 12 months ago, Miller is in the running once again as he looks to become the first Motherwell player to win the award since James McFadden in 2003.
“It’s always an honour to be nominated for these awards,” Lennon Miller said.
“This season has had its highs and lows. Captaining the club at Hampden and for the other games was a massive privilege that will stay with me for the rest of my career. Hearing I was called up to the Scotland squad was also a hugely proud moment for my family and me.
“I’ve tried to keep my head down this season and been looking for consistency every week. I’ve still got a lot to learn but will continue to work hard. Hopefully we can have a strong end to the season.”
The women of steel fought nine-time Scottish Cup champions Glasgow City to the end, but were on the receiving end of a heavy defeat at the national stadium, as they exit the Scottish Cup at the Semi-Final stage.
Motherwell had managed to neutralise Glasgow’s attacking threat and stood up to the initial pressure throughout much of the first-half. However, Sofia Määttä netted the breakthrough shortly after the half hour mark, before Kozlova doubled Glasgow’s lead minutes before half time. Facing a two-goal deficit at the break, the second-half soon escaped the the women of Steel’s grasp, with a Lockwood double sealing a place in the Scottish Cup Final.
Motherwell made two changes from the side that was narrowly defeated by Celtic on Sunday evening. Two-time Scottish Cup winner, Shannon Leishman, returned to the side along with Rachel Todd; both McGoldrick and Barclay settled for the bench.
Glasgow pressed Motherwell from the start and forced the women of steel to defend their penalty area throughout most of the opening phase of play. Glasgow had created the more clear-cut opportunities in the opening 30 minutes but proved to be wasteful in front of goal. The first key opportunity came for City, with Kozlova threatening the Motherwell goal, but her tame effort was easily gathered by Emily Mutch.
Glasgow continued to press and broke the deadlock just after the half hour mark. Skilful play from Lockwood took her beyond the Motherwell defence, who could only watch as she tore down the wing, with Määttä on hand to tap home.
City continued to pile on the pressure, as a heroic goalline clearance from Penman ensured that the deficit remained at one. Penman’s stupendous block was soon cancelled out by Kozlova, who joined the scoring action minutes before halftime, cutting the ball back cheekily to wrong-foot Mutch and roll in doubling Glasgow’s lead.
Glasgow City showed no signs of easing and were quick to find the net again in the second half. Provider turned goalscorer, Lockwood was afforded time in the box to fire beyond Mutch, just 12-minutes after the restart.
Lockwood wrapped up another undeniable performance from Glasgow City, as she sealed their Final place with a fourth-goal. A beautifully weighted ball over the top caught out the Motherwell defence, and with Lockwood bearing down on goal, the Motherwell backline could only watch as she turned the after burners on before slotting home.
Motherwell will feel disheartened, but proud of their exceptional Scottish Cup run, and will use this experience to fuel their final five games of the league season.
Motherwell will regroup as they turn their focus back to the league campaign with a trip to Hibernian on Wednesday night at Meadowbank.
The manager gives his thoughts as his side come from behind to take all three points against St Johnstone.
The Lanarkshire winners at the PFA awards. L/r: Alan Trouten, Lennon Miller and Emma LawtonLennon Miller is celebrating after being crowned the PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year last night - becoming the first Motherwell player since James McFadden in 2003 to claim the award.
The 18-year-old midfielder, who hails from Wishaw, has had a fine season for the Steelmen and earned his first call-up to the Scotland A squad earlier this year.
And his performances have been recognised by his peers, with Miller taking the young player prize on a night two of his fellow Lanarkshire players also won awards.
Rutherglen ace Alan Trouten won League Two Player of the Year after guiding East Fife to the play-offs this season, becoming the oldest player to win a PFA award at the age of 39.
And East Kilbride star Emma Lawton was crowned SWPL Player of the Year after a terrific first full-time season with Celtic Women, playing Champions League football for the first time and landing her first Scotland cap and first goal for her country.
Miller was over the moon to claim his award and admitted if he has half the career McFadden had, he would be delighted.
He said: "If I have half the career James has had, I will be pretty happy.
Lennon Miller wins the PFA Scotland young player of the year award"It is pretty hard to put into words right now. It is still pretty raw but I am just thankful for everybody that voted for me.
"For it to be the players that you play against is that bit extra special and I'd like to thank the manager and the players I play with every week because they have been a massive help to me and I am just thankful for everything.
"Playing another year has given me extra experience, different experience to what I had last year. I feel like I have become a better player.
"To any other young players I'd say just enjoy it. Enjoy every time you step on the pitch and work as hard as you can, you never know where it can take you."
McFadden was crowned Scotland's PFA Young Player of the Year in 2002/03(Image: Henry McInnes/Sunday Mail)Trouten scored 22 goals and provided four assists for the Fifers after helping them to the League One play-offs and that came off the back of claiming an incredible FIVE awards at the East Fife Player of the Year Awards a day earlier.
After becoming the oldest PFA winner, the striker said: "It is a wee bit of history so I will take it. I think nowadays players at all levels look after themselves so much better than when I first started in the game. It is a different culture and you reap the rewards. When I was younger I probably didn't look after myself as well as I should have, but now I'm putting in the work and I've got the rewards for it.
"I am absolutely delighted, I'm over the moon. My family will be so proud of me. They put in as much effort as myself. Doing things on the pitch, they need to make sacrifices as well.
"It is the fourth time I have been nominated and it is a massive honour and privilege.
"A lot of people just see you as a part-time footballer, training Tuesday and Thursday then you play Saturday. But it is definitely more than that, especially if you are playing to the age I am.
Alan Trouten"It is big sacrifices, but I love football and I will continue it until the day I chuck it.
"I won five awards at the club awards so it has been a good week. We fell short of winning the league but we can still get promoted so that's what we'll be looking to do in the play-offs."
Celtic star Lawton, 23, scored in the Champions League for the club and admits it will be hard to top this campaign individually.
She said: "It is a real honour to do it when it is voted for the people you play against every week. It is special so I am really grateful to everybody that has voted for me.
Celtic’s Emma Lawton Article continues below"I was still part-time last season, I was doing my coaching on the side so now I am a full-time player, playing and training every day and it has just been mad - but I have loved every minute fo it.
"As a team, we've not been at our best this season but to be recognised individually is really special and I am just extremely grateful.
"It is going to be really hard to live-up to these past 12 months, but we'll see what the future holds."

Kai Andrews has had to deal with a lot thrown at him in the last three months
Since his arrival on loan from Coventry in January
the 18-year-old has had his fair share of challenges and experiences
This loan move to Motherwell was for him to go through these moments
the midfielder is pleased with how things have panned out in North Lanarkshire so far
“It’s been frantic,” Kai Andrews laughed
“A lot has happened in such a short space of time
but I feel like every challenge that has been thrown my way
“With everything that has gone on recently
there is no doubt I’m a more mature man and player as a result
I’m in a first-team environment consistently
and getting proper experience of a first-team match day
It’s been a big step up for me from academy football
“I was training with the Coventry first-team players every week
It’s just that game time and experience I wasn’t getting
so this loan move felt like a necessity for me.”
The loan move has certainly provided Andrews with ample experience of life as a professional player
But all of that will stand him in good stead for the future
and the change from academy football has been noticeable for the Welshman
“Coming here was all about getting experience and minutes,” he stated
“There’s only so much you can learn from academy football
That’s where I want to go in the future
playing in front of the big crowds and playing better opposition has been a learning curve
I feel like I’ve dealt with it all very well
My body has felt fine throughout the games I’ve played
whether that’s been 90 or 20 minutes
The main thing for me is just keeping up with the speed of the game mentally
which is a lot different from academy football
People’s jobs are at stake here; that’s been my biggest challenge
but I’ve adapted to that well.”
He made his debut against Kilmarnock back in January
who had scouted and convinced him to join the club
and Andrews would have to impress if he wanted the loan to be a success
we had a change of manager,” Andrews explained
it was because Stuart Kettlewell had already watched me and already had that sense of trust with me
That new change of manager creates a sense of doubt in your head and a bit of worry
but I feel like the new manager has come in and done well
“I really like the philosophy he is trying to instill
and I enjoy the way he wants to play football
it’s just another experience I’ve had
“At the gaffer’s first game against Dundee United
But I took in the sense that that’s just another motivator and that I needed to push harder
I trained even better and got my chance to start against Dundee
My favourite moment so far was winning at Ibrox
“The atmosphere on such a big occasion
was like nothing I’d ever experienced in football
It was the best I’ve felt playing football.”
Andrews received plenty of praise for his brave performance against Rangers that day
Coventry fans were also shouting his praises as they kept an eye on one of their own
But it’s not just the fans closely monitoring his progress; a number of the staff at Coventry
“There are a lot of staff that keep in contact with me from Coventry,” he added
“They like to keep tabs on me and are watching closely
so I just want to keep impressing while I’m here and then take it back to Coventry in the summer
“The whole vision is I’ve grown up playing for Coventry; they’re my boyhood club
To go back there and be a first-team player is the goal
and we’ve got a lot of important games before the season is finished.”
But the experiences and challenges faced haven’t all been difficult to handle
Andrews earned his maiden call-up to the Wales first-team squad in March at just 18 years old
I got the news a week prior to the squad release day saying that I was on standby,” he noted
I didn’t feel like anything would happen
but then I got the call to say I had got a full call-up
I didn’t know what to do or how to handle myself
“I called my mum and told her the news
I pulled up on the side of the road because I was so lost for words
my phone went crazy with every family member and all my friends calling me
“When I arrived at the camp and started to walk through the doors
I saw Craig Bellamy standing there waiting for me
so I tried my best to hold my smile in so I could look calm and composed
“All the players were really welcoming
There were a few players who I had already encountered
and Lewis Koumas I’d played with in the academy
They were especially welcoming and helped me settle in
Although Andrews didn’t receive his first cap during the international window
he has come away from that camp feeling even more positive about his game having worked alongside some of the best in the business
“The intensity and standard throughout training are a different level,” Andrews said
“You have to adjust quickly to it; the first day I was just chasing shadows
Being able to train beside those players helps you learn a lot
Just watching the way they conduct themselves and carry themselves
“It shows how they’ve got a career in the game; that’s my aim too
It was a privilege to play alongside players of that calibre
it was an opportunity for Bellamy to see me and for me to try and impress
I had a few conversations with him where he said that I’d handled myself well
I’m hoping that gives me enough to get invited to another camp in the future
Going out there and training with the likes of Brennan Johnson and Dan James
who are massive names in football who have had a career for years at the highest level in football
gives me confidence because I know I can handle myself with them
I want to bring that confidence back here and put it out on the pitch
England and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
and I grew up there from a young age; mind you
especially because that’s from my grandma’s side
I’ll keep working hard to do just that.”
Motherwell swiftly return to action midweek
as they travel to the Scottish capital to face Hearts at the Oriam National performance Centre on Wednesday evening

as league leaders Glasgow City restored their place at the top of the SWPL with an assured four-nil victory
Paul Brownlie’s side head to Edinburgh keen to earn their first points of the top-six campaign
The women of steel head to the Oriam National Performance Centre preparing to earn their first victory over the Edinburgh side since defeating Hearts by one-goal to nil in 2022
Motherwell’s last victory over the Jambos in the capital stretches back to 2020
Katie Rice and Chelsie Watson all scoring in a comfortable three-nil victory

Kick-off from the Oriam National performance Centre at 19:30
We have seven players out on loan at present
Here’s how they have got on over the last four weeks
Matty Connelly and East Kilbride have been very successful since our last loan report
The Lowland League side have picked up three pieces of silverware
the South Challenge Cup and the Lowland League Cup
Connelly now waits for the crucial playoff matches that will determine what league they play in next season
They will face Brora Rangers over two legs
Connelly played 90 minutes in both cup finals and also played 90 minutes in two of the other three league matches
whilst also playing the last 30 minutes in their most recent match
Max Ross is now on 21 appearances for Albion Rovers this season
Rovers have moved themselves up to sixth place in the table
overtaking Broxburn thanks to a good run of form
They have won three and drawn one of their last four games
Ross has started in the last eight matches
playing the full 90 in six of those outings
He came off in the first half against Hearts B at the weekend
Rovers will finish the season in sixth place
with Tranent four points ahead of them with only one game to go
Broomhill have been in action four times since our last report
Brannan McDermott has started and played the full 90 minutes in all four of those games
They are joint-bottom of the Lowland League table with one game to go
but only three points separate the bottom three teams in the division
Olly Whyte has recovered from injury and got straight back into the action
he scored in Cowdenbeath’s 5-0 win over Bo’ness United
He then started in the 3-3 draw with Hearts and again in his most recent outing against Celtic B
where he played the full 90 minutes in a 6-4 defeat
Cowdenbeath are tenth in the table and are well clear of any danger at the bottom of the table and could still climb one place with one game remaining
Dylan Wells has made a further four appearances for Edinburgh City in the last month
where the Citizens have won three and lost one
They have confirmed a spot in the promotion play-offs
with Michael McIndoe’s side eight points ahead of fifth place
leaders Peterhead are eight points ahead of City
with second-place East Fife four points ahead
Wells and Edinburgh City will be eyeing up second place for a more favourable draw in the playoffs
Ross has made 24 appearances for Annan Athletic this season
starting in three of their last four matches
The 18-year-old scored his first goal of the season against Kelty Hearts a couple of weeks ago in a 2-1 win for his side
The battle to avoid the relegation play-off spot is well and truly on for Willie Gibson’s side
They are three points off Inverness and safety with three games remaining
Dumbarton have already been relegated from League One
Bonnyrigg Rose have found life difficult in the last four matches
losing all four and becoming cut adrift at the foot of League Two
Mark Ferrie has started two of the last four games
appearing a second-half substitute in the other two matches
Rose are now seven points off of Forfar in ninth
but that would see them safe with only the bottom club participating in the relegation play-off
Hearts and St Mirren could all finish in the final top-six spot with the right set of results going into match day 33
Tony Watt and Callum Slattery shot just wide of the mark in the first-half
it ruled Motherwell out of the top-six running
but Hearts could still complete the job if they found the back of the net
The stalemate confirmed bottom-six football for the Steelmen for the third season running
but Michael Wimmer will be pleased by adding a point to the tally
as Motherwell look to steer clear of any drama at the bottom of the table
Our final five fixtures of the season have now been announced
We will kick off our post-split schedule with a home match against St Johnstone on Saturday 26 April
We’ll travel to Dundee on Saturday 3 May
We then take on Kilmarnock on in our final home match of the season on Wednesday 14 May and we will finish the 2024/25 season at Ross County on Sunday 18 May
Ticket details for all fixtures will be revealed in due course
The women of steel’s long-anticipated return to action failed to live up to expectations
as Glasgow City headed back to the top of the Scottish Women’s Premier League following an assured four-nil victory at Petershill Park on Sunday
Brenna Lovera broke the deadlock shortly before the half-hour mark before quickly adding a second
Katie Lockwood made it three less than a minute later
as City headed into the break with an assured three-goal advantage
Lockwood completed her brace and sealed the three-points for the hosts with the final kick of the ball
leaving Motherwell with much to reflect on ahead of their forthcoming midweek encounter with Hearts
Head Coach Paul Brownlie was confined to the stands of Petershill Park
as Assistant Colin Crichton undertook duties in the Motherwell technical area
The women of steel named a variety of changes to the starting XI
as Louisa Boyes and Bailley Collins were both rested ahead of the forthcoming double-header against Hearts and Celtic next week
and Lucy Ronald were all named amongst the substitutes
with goalkeeper Rebecca Cameron returning between the sticks
and Lucy Barclay also returned to the starting XI
Blighted by the persistent hail storm over Glasgow
both sides initially struggled to settle into the game
as they braved the freezing cold elements at Petershill Park
with Lockwood providing the only notable opportunity of the opening 20-minute
drilling an effort low across the face of goal
Lovera soon broke the deadlock with a powerful header from close-range following a whipped corner-kick that fell kindly to the forward at the back post
Motherwell’s backline was undone twice
as City immediately cruised to a three-goal advantage
as Lovera curled a precise finish into the bottom-right corner
and Lockwood dispatched her first of the afternoon with a strike from within the 18-yard-box
The fourth and final goal came in the final phase of the game
as Lockwood drifted unmarked into the Motherwell penalty area
and coolly slotted home a tidy finish into the bottom-right corner
Motherwell will regroup before facing Hearts at the Oriam on Wednesday evening
Motherwell were held to a 0-0 draw on Saturday against Hearts
confirming the Steelmen’s spot in the bottom six for the final five games of the William Hill Premiership
Manager Michael Wimmer made two changes to the side that were beaten seven days prior
with Tony Watt and Tawanda Maswanhise coming into the starting 11 in place of Luke Armstrong and Kai Andrews
The first big chance of the game fell to the visitors just before the 20-minute mark
James Penrice’s deep cross found Sander Kartum unmarked at the back post
but the Hearts man blazed well over the bar
Callum Slattery watched his low-driven effort just trickle past the post from the edge of the box
with Tony Watt also going close with a volley from the right-hand side of the box
Luke Armstrong and Jair Tavares were introduced to proceedings
with the former getting in behind the Jambos backline to get on the end of a Lennon Miller through-ball
but the Hearts defender recovered in time to block the striker’s effort
Lawrence Shankland went close twice to breaking the deadlock
with the Scotland international heading on target from a corner in the 84th minute but could only watch it being cleared off the line by Miller
The forward also latched onto a ball over the top of the defence in stoppage time but could only direct his finish wide of the mark
Dan Casey rose highest from a Motherwell corner
but couldn’t direct the effort on target
After some good work by Will Dickson and Kai Andrews
the Steelmen won a corner at the death but referee Kevin Clancy decided to blow for full-time before they could get the chance to take it
Wimmer and his men can now prepare for life in the bottom six
Michael Wimmer gives his reaction to the goalless draw with Hearts
The point means Motherwell will miss out on top-six
Dreams of adorning the famous dark blue strip or proudly wearing the lion rampant on your chest are amongst the most celebrated and cherished moments for any Scottish footballer
A dream that deservedly became a reality for 24-year-old midfielder Louisa Boyes
who received her first-ever national team selection after being named in the 20-player shortlist for the Scotland under-23 squad
Boyes joined fellow teammates Eilidh Austin and defender Jenna Penman on the flight to Spain
as the squad prepared to face Denmark and Portugal in a double-header of international friendlies
“It’s an absolute honour,” Boyes said proudly
“Being selected by your country is an absolute privilege and one I am certainly not taking for granted
My dream has always been to one day play for Scotland
and having not played at any previous international level
I wasn’t sure if that experience would ever come
“It’s a really proud moment for my family
who were completely over the moon when I told them the news
Part of my decision to sign for Motherwell in 2023 was because of their strong record in developing young players
and giving them the platform to express themselves at a high level
there have been nine of us in the Scotland team across under 17
“It’s really satisfying to see
as I know how hard they all work week to week
and I was absolutely delighted to join them.”
Boyes didn’t have to wait long for her first opportunity
as the versatile midfielder started in Scotland’s second game against Portugal
with Scotland emerging victorious after a penalty shootout following a goalless 90-minutes
“It was a dream come true,” Boyes said excitedly
“It was everything I’d imagined it would’ve been
You could instantly feel the standard and the tempo of playing at that level
and the squad were able to achieve a really positive result
“I’m immensely proud to forever have that moment to look back on
and I’m hopeful that it’ll be the first of many to come in the future.”
The Bellshill-born central midfielder has continued to impress in claret and amber since lifting the 2023-24 Motherwell Women’s player of the year
surpassing her previous total of six in eight fewer appearances
Boyes has yet to miss a single game this season
featuring on 25-occasions; starting in 24 of those
19 has played a vital role in Motherwell’s route to the National Stadium
netting in every round of the Scottish Cup against Rossvale
as Paul Brownlie’s side secured their Semi-Final place against Glasgow City later this month
“It’s been a really strong season both personally and collectively as a team,” Boyes added
“I set myself targets at the start of the season because I wanted to establish myself as a more consistent goal threat from midfield
After speaking to Paul at the start of the season
and I was able to play regularly in a more attacking area of the pitch
To surpass last season’s goal tally before the split had even started was a really proud feeling
especially having worked towards achieving those targets from the start of the season
“To score and play my part in each round of our Scottish Cup campaign was really special
We’ve really wanted to get back to Hampden since our last Semi-Final in 2023
and we’ve had a perfect route to Hampden – netting 16-goals whilst keeping a clean sheet in all three games
having not featured in the previous Semi-Final against Rangers
I’m determined to perform to the highest standard in any game I’m called upon
and hopefully I’ll be able to play my part this time around.”
Motherwell will face their Semi-Final opponents in the SWPL when they return from the international break this weekend
and Boyes is keen for the squad to lay down a marker
“It’ll be a great test for the full squad,” Boyes summarised
“We have the capability to compete against the strongest teams in the league
and building up to the Semi-Final by facing these opponents in the country is the perfect preparation
“We will head to Glasgow full of confidence that we can achieve a result
and hopefully lay down a marker for the Semi-Final at Hampden later this month.”

and the club have already had confirmation these rises are set to continue for the 2025/26 season
the club have had to pay 20% more for standard match day running costs
There have also been significant increased costs in National Insurance and living wage for our valued workforce since our last price increase two years ago
we have had to incur price increases for just the third time in seven years in some age ranges
There has also been significant time spent assessing the pricing structure and price ranges
an adult season ticket would save significantly less over the course of the season compared to a concession season ticket
In the process of trying to balance this and bring both categories’ savings closer together
we have incurred a slightly larger price increase on the concession season ticket compared to the adult season ticket
Whilst both adults and concessions have undergone price increases
we have frozen all children’s prices for 2025/26
The club wants to try and encourage as many young fans into Fir Park as possible to help the club continue on a positive trajectory
a non-student 18-21 year old would be classed a full adult season ticket
we believe a young adult who is not a student may not be able to afford the adult pricing due to earning less in the early stages of their working career
we thought it would be beneficial to implement this new category to allow non-student 18-21-year-olds a fairer price for their season ticket
We have also introduced a Under 5s pricing category
which will allow our fans of the future to get a season ticket for free
We have also taken on board feedback from supporters and the Well Society with regards to our policy on under-13s being unable to attend a match unless accompanied by an adult
we have amended this policy: 12 and under tickets must be purchased with an adult going forward
For those renewing their season ticket from 2024/25
concession tickets are for anyone aged 60 and over
The over 60 concession is for those who currently have this price class
it won’t be valid for any renewing Adult season ticket holders who are now 60
concession prices also apply to full time students with a valid matriculation card
The Early Bird discount will end on Friday 30th May 2025
Upgrade your experience and watch the match in stye with one of our renowned hospitality packages at a discounted price (Cat A – Celtic & Rangers)
91 Lounge and Cooper Box packages remain the same
there will be an open training session at Fir Park prior to the start of the 2025/26 season

I may not have been your manager for a long period of time
but already I have been able to work out a number of things
The raw emotion and dedication to following the team were unquestionable
It’s one of the reasons I came here in the first place
A richly historical football club that is built on tradition but is looking at the future
It’s been an exciting couple of months in Scotland
I feel like I have settled here really quickly; the people are lovely
Having the fans behind is imperative to what my vision is
Football is a collective; it’s such a special sport that has an impact in this particular community
We have had some special moments in such a short space of time
and with your support and continued backing
I admire those who purchase season tickets and follow football in general every week
and having that sort of determination and loyalty is special
and I feel privileged that people do that for this football club
The players and staff will continue to pour everything into bringing success to this club
it’s the least we can do given the loyalty on display in the stands
I remember my first home game here vividly
A special evening under the lights and with all home stands giving the players the extra boost they needed
we wouldn’t have got the win if it weren’t for the support and encouragement shown by the fans
please buy your season ticket and help us on our way to a successful 2025/26 season
Those who are further away or support from home; you are all a part of this MFC family
I want to thank everyone for their support during the 2024/25 season
The support the players received at home and on the road was brilliant
The season didn’t have its challenges to seek
but it feels like we’re on a fresh path under Michael and Ahmet
The two of them have been a credit to work with so far and are hard at work every day to try and get the team in a good place for next season
We’re constantly planning and trying to get things in place to make the summer as easy as possible
We have a number of players under contract for next season
We managed to get players tied down on longer deals earlier in the season
with most holding options of further years at the club’s discretion
to ensure we didn’t have as large a turnover of players that Motherwell has had in previous years and to safeguard the football club
There are a lot of good things going on off the pitch at the club too
The relationship between the club and Well Society is stronger than ever
with everyone working in tandem for the greater good of the football club
I would like to think we have made small improvements
But I know there are still a lot of things that we would like to do better
and we have further ideas here we would like to execute
I would like to pass out my email address to everyone: brian.caldwell@motherwellfc.co.uk
I want supporters to feel like they are a part of this journey
We all want the same thing at the end of the day
and that is the best for Motherwell Football Club
if you plan on buying a season ticket for the upcoming season
the coaching staff and the players all appreciate it
I hope everyone can support the team in any way you can
and the supporters are the vital component
look forward and give it everything for the upcoming campaign

Tom Sparrow arrived in the summer of 2024 in ML1
with many only knowing the 22-year-old from his stint just down the road with Hamilton
Admitting that he was never the best player in his age group at Stoke City in his early years
Sparrow’s approach has always been about giving 100% at all times and leaving nothing out on the pitch
That professional mindset has led him from playing National League North football with Chester in 2023/24 to playing with Motherwell in the top flight of Scottish football the following year
Show work ethic and adaptability; Sparrow has been deployed as a wing-back more than his natural central midfield role

Scottish Gas Women's Scottish Cup Semi-FinalGlasgow City v MotherwellSaturday
The first Scottish Gas Women's Scottish Cup Semi-Final sees nine-time winners Glasgow City take on 2017/2018 runners-ups Motherwell
The match will kick off at 12:15pm and is live on BBC One Scotland
The first meeting behind the sides in the league this season was a close encounter
with City edging it 1-0 through an excellent Emily Whelan goal
The two more recent matches have been more one-sided
with Glasgow City securing two home 4-0 victories at Petershill Park
Glasgow City have won this competition on a record nine occasions
although the serial winners haven't lifted this trophy since beating Hibs six years ago
They lost to Celtic in their last appearance at Hampden Park two years ago
and Leanne Ross' side will be looking to put that right as they return to the National Stadium
They have had to do it the hard way this season
taking on three of last season's top six in their three matches so far
After a hard-fought 3-1 win over Partick Thistle
City came from behind to beat Celtic 3-2 in the following round
Glasgow City were then ten minutes from elimination against Hearts but Lisa Forrest grabbed the all important equaliser
just as it appeared the Jambos were going to hold on
and Kimberley Smitbundled home from a corner to seal a Semi-Final place
This is Motherwell's second Semi-Final appearance in the past three seasons as they aim to reach the Scottish Cup Final for only the second time
after losing to Hibs in the 2017/2018 season
They may have faced a kinder draw than today’s opponents
but the Well have put in three professional performances against the lower league opposition they have faced and they are the only remaining side yet to have conceded a goal so far
Their campaign began back in December with a Third Round victory over SWPL2 side Rossvale
with a match that saw seven different scorers net for the Women of Steel
Amy Sharkey then grabbed a hat-trick in a 6-0 win over Bonnyrigg Rose and a 3-0 win over Boroughmuir Thistle followed in the Quarter-Finals as Motherwell confirmed their place in the last four
Glasgow City's Lisa Evans: “It’s always been something that Glasgow City has prided itself on
Playing big games and playing for trophies
I’ve been fortunate to have had quite a lot of experience playing at Hampden
but for some of the girls it will be the first time
“I’ve had some amazing days in my career but I’ve not actually won a trophy for a while
I think the last one I’ve won was with Arsenal in 2019 so it’s been a while for me personally
it always matters how much silverware you win when you look back at your career
I’ve loved the competitiveness of training and the closeness of the league
It’s been so exciting to be a part of this title race
it’s been amazing to see the changes that have been made over the years and the progress.“I’m actually struggling to remember my first Scottish Cup win back then but I do remember the second one at Toryglen when we beat Hibs in 2011.“I remember scoring that day and it was great to win those trophies at a young age
It also shows the progress that the game has made up here
to think that the final could take place at Toryglen compared to Hampden now.”
Motherwell's Emily Mutch: “I’d never played at Hampden before but I remember manager Paul Brownlie took us up on the Monday before to look around which definitely helped
“We managed to stay in the game for as long as we good and I performed well personally which was pleasing
It was a dream for all of us to play at the National Stadium and that was the first year the Women’s Scottish Cup Semi-Finals were played at Hampden so it was really nice to be a part of that
our two main aims as a team were getting top six and doing well in the cup competitions
we’ve done well but no we want to go and show that we can compete in the top six against these full-time teams
We want to show that we’re not just there to make up the numbers – we want to get to the final.”
The match will be live on BBC One Scotland

Maria McAneny's goal secured three points for Celtic as they beat Motherwell 1-0 at K Park.
The result leaves Celtic still trailing the top three with five games remaining in the SWPL season.
The visitors spurned numerous chances to take the lead in the first half and found the second half equally as difficult in front of goal.
McAneny broke the deadlock on the 64th minute when she scored straight from a Celtic free-kick just outside the Motherwell box.
Elena Sadiku's side had numerous opportunities to double their lead but again weren't clinical enough and Motherwell defended well throughout.

winning 3-2 against bottom side St Johnstone
Callum Slattery scored his fifth goal of the season as he continues to make up for lost time through injury
with Johnny Koutroumbis netting his first in Motherwell colours also
That result means Motherwell cannot finish bottom this season and are safe from automatic relegation
Dundee are in the middle of a battle to avoid the relegation playoff spot but produced a terrific 1-0 victory over Hearts last Saturday to help boost their chances
The result moved them two points clear of Ross County with four games to go
Simon Murray has been a key component for the Dee all season
His 20 goals this season saw him nominated for the PFA Player of the Year award this week alongside Celtic trio Kuhn
and the potential of a relegation scrap looming

The game got off to the worst possible start for Michael Wimmer
as he watched his side concede to a Mackenzie Kirk strike early in the first-half
Callum Slattery and Johnny Koutroumbis had the Steelmen ahead at the break
Tom Sparrow added a third to seemingly kill the game off
until St Johnstone found the back of the net for a second time to setup a nervous end to proceedings
the points would stay in North Lanarkshire and with four games left
Motherwell’s target will be 7th place
Lennon Miller has been nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Year award for the second year running
The 18-year-old has continued his upward rise
making 34 appearances in all competitions this season

Miller has remained an ever-present in the Motherwell midfield

He had the armband for the Steelmen’s trip to Hampden in the Premier Sports Cup semi-final
Maturing and ticking off further milestones
he would be rewarded with his first ever call-up to the senior Scotland side in March
Narrowly missing out on this award 12 months ago
Miller is in the running once again as he looks to become the first Motherwell player to win the award since James McFadden in 2003
“It’s always an honour to be nominated for these awards,” Lennon Miller said
“This season has had its highs and lows
Captaining the club at Hampden and for the other games was a massive privilege that will stay with me for the rest of my career
Hearing I was called up to the Scotland squad was also a hugely proud moment for my family and me
“I’ve tried to keep my head down this season and been looking for consistency every week
I’ve still got a lot to learn but will continue to work hard
Hopefully we can have a strong end to the season.”
The women of steel fought nine-time Scottish Cup champions Glasgow City to the end
but were on the receiving end of a heavy defeat at the national stadium
as they exit the Scottish Cup at the Semi-Final stage
Motherwell had managed to neutralise Glasgow’s attacking threat and stood up to the initial pressure throughout much of the first-half

the second-half soon escaped the the women of Steel’s grasp
with a Lockwood double sealing a place in the Scottish Cup Final
Motherwell made two changes from the side that was narrowly defeated by Celtic on Sunday evening
returned to the side along with Rachel Todd; both McGoldrick and Barclay settled for the bench
Glasgow pressed Motherwell from the start and forced the women of steel to defend their penalty area throughout most of the opening phase of play
Glasgow had created the more clear-cut opportunities in the opening 30 minutes but proved to be wasteful in front of goal
with Kozlova threatening the Motherwell goal
but her tame effort was easily gathered by Emily Mutch
Glasgow continued to press and broke the deadlock just after the half hour mark
Skilful play from Lockwood took her beyond the Motherwell defence
who could only watch as she tore down the wing
as a heroic goalline clearance from Penman ensured that the deficit remained at one
Penman’s stupendous block was soon cancelled out by Kozlova
who joined the scoring action minutes before halftime
cutting the ball back cheekily to wrong-foot Mutch and roll in doubling Glasgow’s lead
Glasgow City showed no signs of easing and were quick to find the net again in the second half
Lockwood was afforded time in the box to fire beyond Mutch
Lockwood wrapped up another undeniable performance from Glasgow City
as she sealed their Final place with a fourth-goal
A beautifully weighted ball over the top caught out the Motherwell defence
the Motherwell backline could only watch as she turned the after burners on before slotting home
but proud of their exceptional Scottish Cup run
and will use this experience to fuel their final five games of the league season
Motherwell will regroup as they turn their focus back to the league campaign with a trip to Hibernian on Wednesday night at Meadowbank
The manager gives his thoughts as his side come from behind to take all three points against St Johnstone
Motherwell took a major step towards securing their Premiership status on Saturday afternoon
Callum Slattery drew Motherwell level after going 1-0 down before Johnny Koutroumbis’ effort found the back of the net just minutes later to turn the game on its head
Tom Sparrow added a third just after the interval
before St Johnstone scored a consolation before the end of the 90
Motherwell saw off the challenge of St Johnstone for a hard-fought
The three points were sufficient to ensure that the Fir Park side would be clear of the automatic relegation
which has limited team selection for almost the entire season
it left Dan Casey as the only recognised central defender in the starting line-up with Stephen O’Donnell and Johnny Koutroumbis alongside the Irishman
St Johnstone showed no signs of a Scottish Cup semi-final hangover
as needing three points to maintain their slim hopes of surviving relegation
they pushed forward with three up front from the kick-off
The revamped Well defence was exposed after only six minutes
Josh McPake powered past Koutroumbis on the left
and his cutback was confidently slammed home by Kirk
A good break-up field earned the home side its first corner after 20 minutes
Andy Halliday whipped the ball into a packed box
but when the ball was laid back to Harry Paton
Gradually the Steelmen found some half-chances as the game moved towards the interval
A quick turn at the edge of the box and drive from Slattery after 28 minutes found the ball skimming a couple of feet beyond Andy Fisher’s right-hand post
A minute later the Well midfield man was on target; this time
his 20-yard shot forced Fisher to stretch himself to push the ball round his left-hand post
the pressure towards the Saints goal was increasing
Tony Watt chased a ball down the left touchline
slid a low finish inside Fisher’s right-hand post for his fifth since his comeback from injury
Having sneaked past his marker to get to the byeline
the on-loan striker delivered a teasing ball across the face of the goal
Koutroumbis at the back post made sure of grabbing his first goal for the club
hammering it off the far post and into the net to change the complexity of the game
Saints tried to get back into the game before the interval
it should have been game over within three minutes of the restart when the Fir Park men extended their lead
Dom Thompson withstood a heavy challenge on the left of the box to get back on his feet
His floated ball into the six-yard box was met by Sparrow
who stabbed it over the line to make it 3-1
Ellery Balcombe then made his first save low to his left to hold a long-range effort from Steven Taylor
The Well keeper had to be smart to smother the ball on his goal line as former Hearts striker Uche Ikpeazu tried to force it home
the home side should have extended its lead after 68 minutes
working a quick exchange with Paton on the left before chipping the ball to the waiting Sparrow
who could head the ball straight at Fisher
it was Saints’ Watt who grabbed the headlines when his speculative shot from 22 yards bounced past Balcombe to reduce the leeway and give the visitors a boost
Wimmer made his first substitution after 68 minutes
sending on Luke Armstrong to join Watt up front
It almost paid off 10 minutes later when Armstrong cut the ball back to the corner of the six-yard box
and Watt’s firm snapshot was blocked by the keeper
denying him a thoroughly deserved goal for his massive contribution to the game
That was recognised by the Fir Park fans when Watt and Halliday had a standing ovation when they made way for Moses Ebiye and Davor Zdravkovski for the final 10 minutes
With five minutes of additional time signalled and Saints pressing for an equaliser
as his efforts were also recognised by the fans
As the Perth side made a final onslaught on the Well goal and Wimmer screamed for his players to push Saints further up the pitch
the makeshift defence held out for a narrow win and three points to erase the threat of automatic relegation
and memories forever immortalised through the terraces

Two-time Scottish Cup champion Shannon Leishman expressed a collective eagerness to forge their way to a cup final
“The squad are really excited,” Leishman emphasised
“I think it’s an incredible opportunity
it’s obviously a very different and daunting stage
Every footballer wants to play in these special occasions

Despite being a two-time Scottish Cup winner
the anticipation and pressure that is associated with a game of this magnitude still resonates
but Leishman insists that the team will go out and relish the experience
“You’ll never lose that feeling,” Leishman explained
“I still feel the same pressure and anticipation that I felt on my first Cup Final
as we all share that belief of defying the odds and lifting silverware
You’re playing against opponents across all divisions
so every game you have to treat like a final
but as soon as you get onto the pitch and you see the other team and the crowd; that’s when you get excited
but you have to be able to cope with the added pressure in these types of cup games.”
who has twice immersed herself in the glory of the Scottish Cup with parent club Hibernian
shared her experience of those halcyon days and the significance of the support from the stands and amongst her teammates
“It was just incredible,” Leishman added
Lifting any bit of silverware and achieving that milestone in your career is always special
“I was starting to break into the squad around that time when I was 20-years-old
and experiencing lifting the Scottish Cup twice gives you that incentive to keep that feeling every season
I think every experience you have is always a special moment
even if you aren’t playing and are on the bench
“I think that’s the mentality we all need to have this weekend
as unfortunately we can’t all be on the pitch and play
You need to have that backing within the squad
and we have a really positive core group that will support each other every step of the way
“We’ll take this atmosphere onto the pitch
and hopefully we can leave Hampden Park knowing we’ll be back.”

Hearts will finish the 2024/25 campaign in the bottom six following today's 0-0 draw with Motherwell.
Despite fashioning a number of chances at Fir Park, the Jambos couldn't find a way through, with St. Mirren's late winner against Ross County elsewhere in the Premiership confirming Hearts' bottom six status.
Neil Critchley made one enforced change to the side that faced Dundee United last weekend as Musa Drammeh replaced the suspended James Wilson, meanwhile Frankie Kent and Stephen Kingsley returned to the bench.
With two minutes on the clock, Hearts sent an initial probe. Sander Kartum eased the ball to a waiting Adam Forrester, whose first time cross was covered by Ellery Balcombe in goal before Musa could react.
The next chance wouldn't come until the 18th minute, as fine pressing from the Jambos caught Motherwell on the back foot. Grant slid the ball across to James Penrice, who's cross picked out an unmarked Kartum at the back post, the Norwegian's effort going high and wide.
Motherwell went close too, with Callum Slattery the recipient of a short free kick on the edge of the box, with his low effort dragging inches wide of Craig Gordon's post, before Tony Watt saw his shot flash across the face of goal from the resulting corner.
Hearts kept at it, with Blair Spittal seeing his powerful strike shoot over the crossbar from the corner, with Shankland seeing a headed flick across goal from earlier cleared by Stephen O'Donnell.
Luke Armstrong caused no shortage of issues from the bench, doing well to force his way towards the goal and get a shot off, Michael Steinwender doing well to shepherd away the danger.
Hearts had a golden opportunity to score in the 84th minute, as Lawrence Shankland saw his effort cleaved off the line, before Jorge Grant's follow up went over the bar.
Despite a late flurry of Hearts movement towards goal, there was no way through, with results elsewhere confirming our place in the bottom six of the Premiership as the league splits.

Hibs manager Grant Scott tells BBC Scotland: "I'm delighted to win the game
it got a bit feisty at times so I'm just delighted to get through it
"The second goal gives us a wee bit of comfort
getting the second one just settles us down a bit
"We've had a couple of opportunities but we've not really threatened the goal
We've got to do better in those moments and ultimately Motherwell have kept the ball out

Motherwell manager Paul Brownlie tells BBC Scotland: "We've got to focus on the positives
"The goal took a bit of stuffing out of us and the second goal on half time was poor to lose it so late but I thought the response in the second half was brilliant
"We rode our luck a couple of times but we had chances as well and it's those chances we need to turn into goals
"I would be more annoyed if we weren't creating opportunities
It's just putting the ball in the back of the net
that's seven games we haven't scored in but it's not for lack of trying."
Brownlie added: "I'm a wee bit embarrassed
it's just the type of person that I am
"This year has been really successful but I'm there because of the players
I have a fantastic support group and I'm where I am because of them but it's fantastic to be nominated."

Rangers manager Jo Potter tells BBC Scotland: "It was really disappointing
it's tough to put your finger on straight after the game because we didn't excel in any areas
I know we'll all feel that hurt because we've had a really good opportunity tonight and come so far away from it
We've got to make sure we're doing something pretty quickly to turn it around
we've got to be damn hard to beat and we weren't
We know we can produce those performances to then come so far off it
we've got to look at all aspects of that game
"That's two league games back to back that we've lost and we did that just before Christmas
We had a really good reaction to that after the break but we don't have the luxury of that break now

Hibernian extended their lead at the top of the SWPL by a point to three with a comfortable victory against Motherwell at Meadowbank.
Well rested after a weekend off, Grant Scott’s league leaders were commanding as they capitalised on Rangers’ home defeat by Glasgow City, who moved up to second with four games to play.
Kathleen McGovern took advantage of a defensive disaster to break the deadlock, helping the ball in from mere inches out, before Kirsten Reilly powered a header in deep into first-half added time.
The hunt for a well deserved third was maintained throughout a dominant second half, but it was not forthcoming.
The impressive Reilly remained rooted when her well struck free-kick cannoned off the crossbar, while substitute Ciara Grant cracked an effort off a post after a silky move.
Numerous close-range chances were squandered too.
Paul Brownlie’s Motherwell, who were in action on Saturday, looked like they were feeling the effects of a long afternoon in their Scottish Cup semi-final loss to City at Hampden.
However, they made Hibs, who have an Edinburgh derby away to Hearts on Sunday (16:10) - live on BBC Alba and iPlayer - settle for two.
Hibs boss Grant Scott: "I'm delighted to win the game, it was a tough battle out there. It was physical, it got a bit feisty at times so I'm just delighted to get through it.
"For us it's incredible that we're there, the group has been amazing all season and it's going to be a tough job. There's some really good teams chasing us down but it's the best place to be at this point."
Motherwell manager Paul Brownlie: "We've got to focus on the positives. It was another strong performance, I thought defensively, in parts, we were sound.
"The goal took a bit of stuffing out of us and the second goal on half time was poor to lose it so late but I thought the response in the second half was brilliant."

Tony Docherty is unapologetic about his attacking philosophy as Dark Blues manager
He’s willing to take risks to try to win games
can backfire as the final 10 minutes against Motherwell demonstrated
At the business end of a relegation battle points are precious
Maswanhise’s goal in the 92nd minute saw the Dark Blues throw away one of those precious points
you can round that up to the whole three points after seeing yet another lead given away
Courier Sport was at Dens Park to pick out key talking points from a damaging Dundee defeat.
Let’s start with the positive part of the game
The first half was good from Dundee and they deserved the lead at the break
Antonio Portales kept his place in defensive midfield after doing well at Hearts the week before
He stepped it up in this one with a fabulous opening goal
A long throw popped up right in front of the Mexican and he smashed a brilliant volley into the top corner
His first Premiership goal of the season was well worth waiting for
And it looked for all the world that he had a second just a few minutes later only for VAR to intervene and deny the Mexican another absolute beauty
Tony Docherty was furious at this decision
The emotion and disappointment completely understandable
Clark Robertson was in an offside position from the first contact following another Ryan Astley long throw
He went for the ball but didn’t make contact with it or the defender
That small movement towards the ball was enough for the VAR Calum Scott to call offside
In the pre-VAR world (the good old days) the goal would certainly have stood and Dundee would have gone in at the break 2-0 up and feeling pretty good
more often than not that is going to be ruled out because of Robertson’s attempt to touch the ball
Docherty’s argument against the technology has merit
Do we really want to see goals ruled out for minor infractions
But this isn’t the time of the season to be pouring over the impact of VAR on our game
More important is figuring out what the hell happened in that second half
Dundee deserved their lead at the break but the game completely turned in the second period
Docherty pointed to the disallowed goal as reason for the shift
There needs to be more resilience in his team than that
This was Dundee’s chance to finally win back-to-back Premiership matches for the first time this season
Clark Robertson unfortunately ended up in the midst of the three big moments that went against Dundee – the disallowed goal
his tackle on Lennon Miller went straight to Tom Sparrow for the equaliser and then he got his bearings all wrong in allowing Maswanhise to outjump him
But there was far more to the second half than a bit of misfortune and a mistake
The first half saw Dundee ahead on the shot count five to four with four on target for the home side and none for the Steelmen
The Dark Blues had five again but just one on target while Motherwell racked up 12 shots on goal with four on target and one off the bar
After they went down to 10 men on 79 minutes the visitors had seven shots on goal while Dundee managed just three
You want to win ideally but a point at this stage of the season while your rivals are losing is like gold dust
A 1-1 draw would have seen Dundee move three points ahead of Ross County in 11th with a better goal difference
That would have left the Staggies needing to earn two results to overhaul the Dee
Now Dundee could be back in the relegation play-off spot by the time the Staggies come to Dens next Wednesday
The next fixtures leave a tough trip to Kilmarnock for Dundee while County travel to bottom side St Johnstone
He swapped defender Ryan Astley for attacker Charlie Reilly and went 4-4-2 with Josh Mulligan as an attacking right-back
In going gung-ho they left themselves open at the back and Motherwell
Dundee had just two efforts on goal – Robertson headed over and Lyall Cameron turned a shot wide
Motherwell brought a fine save from Trevor Carson
saw a Dan Casey effort blocked before the same man headed onto the bar and Tony Watt hit the rebound wide
Then came the winning goal followed by a breakaway where Carson denied Maswanhise and then Casey somehow missed an open goal
Motherwell had almost as many efforts on goal with 10 men as they did from the previous 79 minutes of action
ensuring you don’t lose would have been the smart
That’s the managerial tightrope at this level
The loss now leaves Dundee with a massive three games to save their Premiership status

PetroIneos plant at Grangemouth(Image: Daily Record)Motherwell and Wishaw’s MSP has drawn comparisons of the demise of Grangemouth’s oil refinery to the steel works at Ravenscraig
Clare Adamson blasted the UK Government after Grangemouth’s owner Petroineos confirmed Scotland’s only oil refinery has stopped processing crude oil after a century of operations
The SNP MSP expressed solidarity with the workers who she says have been let down by Labour after they promised before last year’s UK General Election to save the refinery
She condemned the Labour UK Government’s failure to protect the livelihoods of the Grangemouth workforce
drawing a powerful comparison between the situation at Grangemouth and the closure of the Ravenscraig steelworks on 24 June 1992
which left a damaging legacy in post-industrial Motherwell

The SNP has called for the Grangemouth refinery to be nationalised but this was rejected by the UK Government
despite the Labour administration recently taking similar action to save the British Steelworks at Scunthorpe
Ms Adamson said: “I watched as the Ravenscraig towers came down
Ravenscraig was the biggest strip steel mill in Europe at the time
1,200 jobs were lost directly and thousands more across Lanarkshire
It left a lasting scar on the lives and livelihoods of people in my community
The former steel works at Ravenscraig(Image: DX)“It is the moment that drove me into politics because I wanted to push for better outcomes for people in Motherwell and Wishaw and governance which served the interests of the people of Scotland
we need to transition away from fossil fuels and focus our investment on renewables
But that cannot be done without a transition for the people who work in the sector
That was the real betrayal at Ravenscraig; the failure to provide any kind of fair transition for the workers and communities devastated by UK policies.”
The MSP claims many in the Motherwell community never really recovered from the loss of Ravenscraig and that the people of Grangemouth now find themselves in a similar predicament
Petroineos in Grangemouth(Image: Daily Record)“The awful situation at Grangemouth reminds me of those days,” she continued
“And we can see a clear division between action at Scunthorpe when it was threatened with closure and inaction at Grangemouth
“The UK Government was right to step in to save the steel plant at Scunthorpe; the workers deserved that protection
and we are now in the bizarre situation of being an oil-producing country without refining capacity
Workers protest at Petroineos plans to close Grangemouth oil refinery earlier this year(Image: PA)“The people of Grangemouth have been betrayed by this Labour government
just as my own constituency was betrayed by Thatcher’s government during the closure of Ravenscraig
I never thought I’d see the day when a Labour government would turn its back on a community in the same way
“The Scottish Government has worked constructively with the UK Government since the General Election
But Labour came into power on a clear promise to save the refinery
The refinery in Grangemouth pictured from Bo'ness(Image: Daily Record)“It’s times like these that show why I push for Scottish independence
We need full control over our own affairs because this incident shows that
whether it’s the Tories or Labour in power
the UK does not serve Scotland’s interests
“Project Willow is the plan to secure Grangemouth’ long term industrial future
I am sad that there was no equivalent of Project Willow for Ravenscraig but we need to get on with delivering for this nationally significant site
And we need to see long-term investment and commitment to repairing the damage done by the UK’s post-industrial legacy for communities like mine.”

Kai Andrews has had to deal with a lot thrown at him in the last three months. Since his arrival on loan from Coventry in January, the 18-year-old has had his fair share of challenges and experiences.
This loan move to Motherwell was for him to go through these moments, however, and as such, the midfielder is pleased with how things have panned out in North Lanarkshire so far.
“It’s been frantic,” Kai Andrews laughed.
“A lot has happened in such a short space of time, but I feel like every challenge that has been thrown my way, I’ve stepped up to it. I’m really enjoying my football.
“With everything that has gone on recently, there is no doubt I’m a more mature man and player as a result. I’m in a first-team environment consistently, playing in the first-team, and getting proper experience of a first-team match day. It’s been a big step up for me from academy football, so you’ve got to mature as it goes.
“I was training with the Coventry first-team players every week. Since I got my first call-up at 16, I’ve trained with them onwards. It’s just that game time and experience I wasn’t getting, so this loan move felt like a necessity for me.”
The loan move has certainly provided Andrews with ample experience of life as a professional player. He’s experienced tough opposition, big crowds and manager alterations.
But all of that will stand him in good stead for the future, and the change from academy football has been noticeable for the Welshman.
“Coming here was all about getting experience and minutes,” he stated.
“There’s only so much you can learn from academy football, so you do need to play men’s games. That’s where I want to go in the future, so just getting a consistent run of games, playing in front of the big crowds and playing better opposition has been a learning curve.
“Physically, I feel like I’ve dealt with it all very well. My body has felt fine throughout the games I’ve played, whether that’s been 90 or 20 minutes. I’ve avoided injuries, which is great. The main thing for me is just keeping up with the speed of the game mentally.
“It’s mature, proper football, which is a lot different from academy football. People’s jobs are at stake here; that’s been my biggest challenge, but I’ve adapted to that well.”
In many respects, Andrews has had to learn the hard way. He made his debut against Kilmarnock back in January, under the previous manager, who had scouted and convinced him to join the club. Not long after that, Michael Wimmer would take the reins, and Andrews would have to impress if he wanted the loan to be a success.
“Recently at Coventry, we had a change of manager,” Andrews explained.
“So, I have experienced this before, but at Coventry, I wasn’t in the team playing, so this was a little different. I guess when I came here, it was because Stuart Kettlewell had already watched me and already had that sense of trust with me. That new change of manager creates a sense of doubt in your head and a bit of worry, but I feel like the new manager has come in and done well.
“I really like the philosophy he is trying to instill, and I enjoy the way he wants to play football. With this change, it’s just another experience I’ve had.
“At the gaffer’s first game against Dundee United, I didn’t come on, so I was a bit frustrated. But I took in the sense that that’s just another motivator and that I needed to push harder. So, during that next training week, I trained even better and got my chance to start against Dundee.
“I think I did well in that game, and it got me a run of starts. My favourite moment so far was winning at Ibrox. It’s got to be!
“The atmosphere on such a big occasion, with the away fans that travelled, was like nothing I’d ever experienced in football. It was the best I’ve felt playing football.”
Andrews received plenty of praise for his brave performance against Rangers that day, as did all the players. Online, Coventry fans were also shouting his praises as they kept an eye on one of their own.
But it’s not just the fans closely monitoring his progress; a number of the staff at Coventry, including manager Frank Lampard, remain in contact constantly.
“There are a lot of staff that keep in contact with me from Coventry,” he added.
“They like to keep tabs on me and are watching closely. I spoke to Frank Lampard recently, who is also watching my games. All of the feedback has been good so far, so I just want to keep impressing while I’m here and then take it back to Coventry in the summer.
“The whole vision is I’ve grown up playing for Coventry; they’re my boyhood club, and I’ve been there since I was 11, so my dream is to be a player there. To go back there and be a first-team player is the goal, but as of right now, my focus is Motherwell. The here and now is so important, and we’ve got a lot of important games before the season is finished.”
But the experiences and challenges faced haven’t all been difficult to handle. In amongst this whirlwind few months, Andrews earned his maiden call-up to the Wales first-team squad in March at just 18 years old.
“Initially, I got the news a week prior to the squad release day saying that I was on standby,” he noted.
“Even then, that was surreal. I didn’t feel like anything would happen, but then I got the call to say I had got a full call-up. I didn’t know what to do or how to handle myself, to be honest.
“I called my mum and told her the news. I pulled up on the side of the road because I was so lost for words. She was crying down the phone to me. Honestly, from then on, my phone went crazy with every family member and all my friends calling me.
“When I arrived at the camp and started to walk through the doors, I saw Craig Bellamy standing there waiting for me. The photographer was also there, so I tried my best to hold my smile in so I could look calm and composed.
“All the players were really welcoming. There were a few players who I had already encountered. Jay Dasilva is at Coventry, and Lewis Koumas I’d played with in the academy. They were especially welcoming and helped me settle in. The rest of the lads were top also. It’s quite a young group overall, and that helped me settle in.”
Although Andrews didn’t receive his first cap during the international window, he has come away from that camp feeling even more positive about his game having worked alongside some of the best in the business.
“The intensity and standard throughout training are a different level,” Andrews said.
“You have to adjust quickly to it; the first day I was just chasing shadows. Being able to train beside those players helps you learn a lot. Not just on the pitch, but off it too. Just watching the way they conduct themselves and carry themselves.
“It shows how they’ve got a career in the game; that’s my aim too. It was a privilege to play alongside players of that calibre. With the camp, it was an opportunity for Bellamy to see me and for me to try and impress.
“Over the course of the camp, he did seem impressed. I had a few conversations with him where he said that I’d handled myself well. I’m hoping that gives me enough to get invited to another camp in the future. Going out there and training with the likes of Brennan Johnson and Dan James, who are massive names in football who have had a career for years at the highest level in football, gives me confidence because I know I can handle myself with them.
“Now, I want to bring that confidence back here and put it out on the pitch. I was eligible to play for Wales, England and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. The latter is where my dad is from, and I grew up there from a young age; mind you, I can’t remember much. My heart has always been with Wales, however, especially because that’s from my grandma’s side.
“She’s not with us anymore, but I wanted to make her proud. I’ll keep working hard to do just that.”
Motherwell swiftly return to action midweek, as they travel to the Scottish capital to face Hearts at the Oriam National performance Centre on Wednesday evening.
The women of steel’s long-anticipated return from the international break failed to live up to aspirations, as league leaders Glasgow City restored their place at the top of the SWPL with an assured four-nil victory.
Paul Brownlie’s side head to Edinburgh keen to earn their first points of the top-six campaign.
The women of steel head to the Oriam National Performance Centre preparing to earn their first victory over the Edinburgh side since defeating Hearts by one-goal to nil in 2022. Motherwell’s last victory over the Jambos in the capital stretches back to 2020, with Lori Gardner, Katie Rice and Chelsie Watson all scoring in a comfortable three-nil victory.
Neither side could find the breakthrough in the last meeting between the pair at K-Park, with goalkeeper Emily Mutch keeping a clean sheet against her former side.
Louisa Boyes and Bailley Collins will both return to the matchday squad after being rested lest weekend.
The hosts placed a sizeable dent in their bitter rivals Hibs’ title hopes after defeating the Leith side 2-1 at Meadowbank to earn their second victory from three after comfortably beating Celtic. They remain level on points with the Hoops, as the continue to chase down Rangers in third.

We have seven players out on loan at present. Here’s how they have got on over the last four weeks.
Matty Connelly and East Kilbride have been very successful since our last loan report. The Lowland League side have picked up three pieces of silverware, completing a magnificent treble.
Winning the Lowland League, the South Challenge Cup and the Lowland League Cup, Connelly now waits for the crucial playoff matches that will determine what league they play in next season. They will face Brora Rangers over two legs.
Connelly played 90 minutes in both cup finals and also played 90 minutes in two of the other three league matches, whilst also playing the last 30 minutes in their most recent match.
Max Ross is now on 21 appearances for Albion Rovers this season. Rovers have moved themselves up to sixth place in the table, overtaking Broxburn thanks to a good run of form. They have won three and drawn one of their last four games.
M. Ross has started in the last eight matches, playing the full 90 in six of those outings. He came off in the first half against Hearts B at the weekend. Rovers will finish the season in sixth place, with Tranent four points ahead of them with only one game to go.
Broomhill have been in action four times since our last report. Brannan McDermott has started and played the full 90 minutes in all four of those games. Broomhill drew one, won one and lost two.
They are joint-bottom of the Lowland League table with one game to go, but only three points separate the bottom three teams in the division.
Olly Whyte has recovered from injury and got straight back into the action. In his first game since returning, he scored in Cowdenbeath’s 5-0 win over Bo’ness United. He played 88 minutes in that match.
He then started in the 3-3 draw with Hearts and again in his most recent outing against Celtic B, where he played the full 90 minutes in a 6-4 defeat.
Cowdenbeath are tenth in the table and are well clear of any danger at the bottom of the table and could still climb one place with one game remaining.
Dylan Wells has made a further four appearances for Edinburgh City in the last month. He has started all four of those matches, where the Citizens have won three and lost one.
They have confirmed a spot in the promotion play-offs, with Michael McIndoe’s side eight points ahead of fifth place. With three games to go, leaders Peterhead are eight points ahead of City, with second-place East Fife four points ahead. Wells and Edinburgh City will be eyeing up second place for a more favourable draw in the playoffs.
L. Ross has made 24 appearances for Annan Athletic this season, starting in three of their last four matches.
The 18-year-old scored his first goal of the season against Kelty Hearts a couple of weeks ago in a 2-1 win for his side. The battle to avoid the relegation play-off spot is well and truly on for Willie Gibson’s side.
They are three points off Inverness and safety with three games remaining. Dumbarton have already been relegated from League One, so the lowest they can finish is ninth.
Bonnyrigg Rose have found life difficult in the last four matches, losing all four and becoming cut adrift at the foot of League Two.
Mark Ferrie has started two of the last four games, appearing a second-half substitute in the other two matches. Rose are now seven points off of Forfar in ninth. With three games to go, the highest Rose can finish is ninth, but that would see them safe with only the bottom club participating in the relegation play-off.
Motherwell, Hearts and St Mirren could all finish in the final top-six spot with the right set of results going into match day 33. With the Jambos visiting Fir Park, it was all set up for a grandstand finish.
In the early stages of the game, both teams look tentative; however, both had chances. Tony Watt and Callum Slattery shot just wide of the mark in the first-half, but neither side could break the deadlock.
With St Mirren beating Ross County, it ruled Motherwell out of the top-six running, but Hearts could still complete the job if they found the back of the net. Lawrence Shankland went close, twice, but on both occasions, didn’t see the net ripple.
The stalemate confirmed bottom-six football for the Steelmen for the third season running, but Michael Wimmer will be pleased by adding a point to the tally, as Motherwell look to steer clear of any drama at the bottom of the table.
Our final five fixtures of the season have now been announced.
We will kick off our post-split schedule with a home match against St Johnstone on Saturday 26 April.
We’ll travel to Dundee on Saturday 3 May, before we travel to Hearts on 10 May.
We then take on Kilmarnock on in our final home match of the season on Wednesday 14 May and we will finish the 2024/25 season at Ross County on Sunday 18 May.
Ticket details for all fixtures will be revealed in due course.
The women of steel’s long-anticipated return to action failed to live up to expectations, as Glasgow City headed back to the top of the Scottish Women’s Premier League following an assured four-nil victory at Petershill Park on Sunday.
Brenna Lovera broke the deadlock shortly before the half-hour mark before quickly adding a second. Katie Lockwood made it three less than a minute later, as City headed into the break with an assured three-goal advantage. Lockwood completed her brace and sealed the three-points for the hosts with the final kick of the ball, leaving Motherwell with much to reflect on ahead of their forthcoming midweek encounter with Hearts.
Amidst a two-game touchline ban, Head Coach Paul Brownlie was confined to the stands of Petershill Park, as Assistant Colin Crichton undertook duties in the Motherwell technical area. The women of steel named a variety of changes to the starting XI, as Louisa Boyes and Bailley Collins were both rested ahead of the forthcoming double-header against Hearts and Celtic next week.
Defender Jenna Penman, Rachel Todd, Katie Rice, Sophie Black, Emily Mutch, and Lucy Ronald were all named amongst the substitutes, with goalkeeper Rebecca Cameron returning between the sticks. Chelsie Watson, Jo Addie, Sienna McGoldrick, Brodie Greenwood, Sarah Gibb, and Lucy Barclay also returned to the starting XI.
Blighted by the persistent hail storm over Glasgow, both sides initially struggled to settle into the game, as they braved the freezing cold elements at Petershill Park, with Lockwood providing the only notable opportunity of the opening 20-minute, drilling an effort low across the face of goal, but Cameron reacted well to parry clear. Lovera soon broke the deadlock with a powerful header from close-range following a whipped corner-kick that fell kindly to the forward at the back post.
Within a minute, Motherwell’s backline was undone twice, as City immediately cruised to a three-goal advantage, as Lovera curled a precise finish into the bottom-right corner. Instantly from the restart, City regained possession, and Lockwood dispatched her first of the afternoon with a strike from within the 18-yard-box.
The fourth and final goal came in the final phase of the game, as Lockwood drifted unmarked into the Motherwell penalty area, and coolly slotted home a tidy finish into the bottom-right corner.
Motherwell will regroup before facing Hearts at the Oriam on Wednesday evening.
Motherwell were held to a 0-0 draw on Saturday against Hearts, confirming the Steelmen’s spot in the bottom six for the final five games of the William Hill Premiership.
Manager Michael Wimmer made two changes to the side that were beaten seven days prior, with Tony Watt and Tawanda Maswanhise coming into the starting 11 in place of Luke Armstrong and Kai Andrews.
The first big chance of the game fell to the visitors just before the 20-minute mark. James Penrice’s deep cross found Sander Kartum unmarked at the back post, but the Hearts man blazed well over the bar.
Callum Slattery watched his low-driven effort just trickle past the post from the edge of the box, with Tony Watt also going close with a volley from the right-hand side of the box.
At the half time mark, the game still had a nervous feel to it. Luke Armstrong and Jair Tavares were introduced to proceedings, with the former getting in behind the Jambos backline to get on the end of a Lennon Miller through-ball, but the Hearts defender recovered in time to block the striker’s effort.
Lawrence Shankland went close twice to breaking the deadlock, with the Scotland international heading on target from a corner in the 84th minute but could only watch it being cleared off the line by Miller. The forward also latched onto a ball over the top of the defence in stoppage time but could only direct his finish wide of the mark.
Also in stoppage time, Dan Casey rose highest from a Motherwell corner, but couldn’t direct the effort on target. After some good work by Will Dickson and Kai Andrews, the Steelmen won a corner at the death but referee Kevin Clancy decided to blow for full-time before they could get the chance to take it.
Wimmer and his men can now prepare for life in the bottom six, with a host of things still to play for.
Motherwell Team: Balcombe, Sparrow, Balmer, O’Donnell, Casey, Thompson, Miller, Halliday, Slattery, Maswanhise, Watt.
Motherwell Subs: Oxborough, Koutroumbis, Wilson, Zdravkovski, Paton, Andrews, Dickson, Armstrong, Tavares.
Michael Wimmer gives his reaction to the goalless draw with Hearts.
The point means Motherwell will miss out on top-six.

Grant Scott reflects on Wednesday evening\'s "feisty and physical" encounter with Motherwell at Meadowbank Stadium.
The crucial victory puts the Hibees three points clear of second-place Glasgow City at the summit of the ScottishPower Women\'s Premier League.
Played out under the beaming sunshine in Leith
the girls fought hard in an often scrappy match-up but burst through the battle with some scintillating football throughout.
"It was a difficult game," Scott commented
"I think we done well to come through that with another clean sheet
It wasn\'t without some scares and that\'s credit to Motherwell
"A lot of players left a lot out on the pitch there tonight
It was a tough one and we\'ve come away with the win
Kathleen McGovern and Kirsten Reilly found the net on the day to earn the Hibees all three points.
whose goal count now stands at 26 for the season
will be frustrated not have added more to her incredible tally according to Scott
"If we steal one of those [further chances]
they kept doing the right things to create those moments
"Kathleen has scored so many goals for us now
"She\'s in the right spot and the right places
and the girls linking up with her have been good today too."
Next up for Scott\'s side is a trip across the capital to face city rivals Hearts
The Edinburgh Derby at Oriam on Sunday gives the Hibees another chance to put points on the table heading into a vital four-game stretch to finish off the league season.
"I said it before the last game to their manager and staff
I don\'t think either team has played particularly well in any of the matches apart from the first one at Easter Road
we\'ve just got to hope that we turn up and give a better performance than we\'ve done before
"We\'ve got a target on our back right now because of the position we are in the league
It\'s just something else we\'ve got to deal with
but we need to go in with a positive belief that we can win."

Steve Seddon is in full training. Kofi Balmer is out after coming off against Hearts.
The Steelmen narrowly missed out on a top-six spot, after a 0-0 draw with Hearts last time out. With no game last weekend, Motherwell have had two weeks preparation for their final Saturday home match this season.
Motherwell have got the upper on hand on St Johnstone twice earlier in the season, coming out 2-1 winners at McDiarmid Park and in North Lanarkshire. Saints have won the last two meetings in January.
St Johnstone made the trip to Hampden in the semi-final of the Scottish Cup on Sunday, but were dumped out by a rampant Celtic side 5-0.
They remain rooted to the bottom of the table with five games to go, five points behind 11th placed Dundee. Their last victory on the road in the Premiership came at the very start of February, when they beat St Mirren in Paisley 1-0.
Makenzie Kirk has had a terrific season thus far, and although VAR prevented him from scoring a thunderous strike against Celtic on Sunday, the young forward is on nine goals for the season.
FT: Dundee 1-2 Motherwell - Portales scores & has second ruled out
Well's Koutroumbis sent off but Maswanhise puts visitors in front & seals safety
Trapanovski briefly brought United back at 2-1
FT: Ross County 1-3 Hearts - Hale puts County in front
Shankland counters with double & Forrest adds third
FT: St Johnstone 0-2 Kilmarnock - Watson nets opener
FT: St Mirren 1-0 Aberdeen - Dons' Okkels has goal disallowed before Mandron hits winner for Buddies
Dundee’s turning point after a “bad February” came against Motherwell says Tony Docherty
This weekend he wants another change in the Dark Blues season when they face the Steelmen again
If Dundee can defeat Michael Wimmer’s side it will be the first time all campaign they have won two league matches back-to-back
And would push them closer to Premiership survival
“But signs of recovery came for me against Motherwell
“And no coincidence that it was a return of big Joe Shaughnessy as well
and lost two to Hibs and Rangers – the teams second and third in the league
“But I need to remind myself and remind the players that we lost that game against Motherwell
“So we’re looking to go one better.”
To do so they will need big backing from the Dens Park faithful
Travelling Dees sold out their allocation at Hearts last weekend and were rewarded with a fine 1-0 victory at Tynecastle
“They’ve been brilliant all the time,” Docherty added
“I can’t underplay how big a part the fans play and hopefully they’re seeing the team in good form now
“I know there will be that good support at home that we’re always getting and I would emphasise how important they are at this stage of the season
We trained at Dens today and we’re looking forward to being back there on Saturday and getting that kind of synergy between us and the fans.”
Dundee will welcome back Seun Adewumi from injury as Docherty revealed illness had affected the squad at Hearts last week
there are no long-term effects from that issue
a lot of them had a bug,” Docherty revealed
“So that played a part in the game in terms of boys going down
And so did the amount of effort they put into the game
That showed the kind of mentality they’ve got in terms of going over and above for your team-mates
“Jordan McGhee is still struggling with his Achilles but Seun Adewumi has recovered so he’s back into contention
“Scott Fraser is making leaps and bounds every day in terms of training

Michael Wimmer’s first match in charge at Fir Park was a game to remember
with his side recording a 2-1 win over Dundee in the William Hill Premiership
If ever a match merited the tag of being a six-pointer
a goal in each half from Dan Casey either side of a Simon Murray sealed a deserved victory to open up a seven-point lead over the Dens side in 11th place and hauled the Fir Park side to joint equal with St Mirren
Wimmer made three changes to his starting line-up
the new Well boss included defender Dom Thompson
midfielder Kai Andrews and Callum Slattery from the start
Ewan Wilson and Tawanada Maswanhise stepping down to the bench
Although Luke Armstrong was the lone forward
the five-man midfield with Lennon Miller and Slattery in a forward role immediately had the Dens men contained in their own half
he had called Ellery Balcombe to the touchline and issued new instructions
there were loud appeals for a penalty as Slattery
but neither referee Lloyd Wilson nor VAR thought it was worthy of an award
Miller progressed towards the visitor’s box before his shot was deflected for a corner
Andy Halliday swung the flag kick into the box
powered his header inside Jon McCracken’s right post for the perfect start
snapping into tackles and distributing the ball quickly
just failed to get on the end of a swift and decisive move as the Dens defence was opened up
Another drive from Miller earned another corner
but although Halliday again found Casey’s head
the Well defender could only direct the ball straight at the keeper
a quick break upfield was started and finished by Stephen O’Donnell
as the fullback watched his shot from 20 yards palmed over the bar by McCracken
As the team was warmly applauded by Well fans at the interval
the only disappointment was that the side had only one goal to show for its efforts and domination of the first half
Dens boss Tony Docherty brought on experienced defender Joe Shaughnessy to try and steady the visitor’s defence
But Well still carved out a couple of openings with Tom Sparrow involved in both
his low ball across the six-yard box just evaded Miller and Armstrong before the Well midfielder dived to meet Thompson’s cross
The Steelmen then had an anxious wait as Dundee’s claims for a handball in the box required a long check from VAR before the referee allowed play to continue
the Taysiders found their attacking threat
as Well were forced to defend deeper into their own half
Davor Zdravkovski and Maswanhise to support Armstrong up front
and just as Moses Ebiye waited to replace Armstrong
A ball over the top sent Oluwaseun Adewumi down the right
and when he slid the ball past the advancing Balcombe
it found Murray sliding into the six-yard box and squeezed the ball over the line
and when O’Donnell’s cross found Ebiye eight yards in front of goal
he might have done better than head the ball into McCraken’s waiting arms
Casey showed the Nigerian forward how to finish
Paton evaded a couple of challenges to make his way down the left
That set up a tense additional seven minutes
but it wasn’t backs to the wall from the home side as they continued to chase a third goal
with Zdravkovski and Maswanhise coming close
Michael Wimmer gives his thoughts on his first win as Motherwell manager
Whether captaining the club for six consecutive seasons
leading a Motherwell side onto the Hampden Park turf or guiding the club to their maiden top-six finish
skipper Gill Inglis is no stranger to historic moments in claret and amber
Victory over Aberdeen at K-Park was to be the next chapter in the Rutherglen-born full-back’s illustrious career in the Scottish game
as the 34-year-old defender celebrated her sixth year of dedication and commitment to the club
by leading the women of steel to their first top-six finish in the Scottish Women’s Premier League table
An unprecedented achievement for the Lanarkshire side
“Achieving a top-six finish was an incredible moment,” Inglis said
“We have targeted the top-six over the previous few years
we regrouped and refreshed ourselves as a squad with a clear focus on getting over the line this season
“We’ve had our highs and lows alongside every squad in the league
but to have led the chase for a top-six finish all season
and to finally get over the line by coming back from 2-1 down made the moment
A top-six finish looked firmly within grasp
as defender Rachel Todd bulleted home Katie Rice’s whipped delivery to gift the women of steel a one-goal advantage
a quickfire double from the Dons left Motherwell stunned at the break
A red card to former Well midfielder Niamh Noble prompted a swift second-half resurgence
as Bailley Collins prodded home the rebound from the resulting free-kick
Eilidh Austin’s first Motherwell goal followed before Louisa Boyes added a fourth
as Paul Brownlie’s side coasted through to confirming their top-six status
“The manner in which we achieved top-six was an incredible feeling,” Inglis added
“Results elsewhere would’ve meant we’d have achieved top-six even if we were defeated
but we didn’t care about that on the pitch
We’d worked all year for that moment
and we would’ve been disheartened to fall over the line with a defeat
“We wanted to get over the line on our own terms
and the resiliency from the squad to pick themselves up at half-time and restore our lead was a proud moment for myself and the full team
Despite leading the women of steel to several historical accolades over the years
including an appearance in the first Scottish domestic women’s match t0 be played at the National Stadium
Hampden Park – captain Inglis’ insisted that a top-six finish ranks highest
“A top-six finish in the SWPL is a massive achievement for the players
coaching staff and the club as a whole,” Inglis explained
and to captain the team that secures the highest league finish in the club’s history and the first appearance in the top-six is one of
if not my proudest achievement at the club
We have worked tirelessly both on and off the pitch to get to this point
and to be considered one of the best teams in the country is the perfect reward
“The supporters have been with us all season
but they really turned out in their numbers to see us over the line
Full supporter buses travelling from Fir Park to K-Park was a great sight
and something we are immensely appreciative of as a squad
We are incredibly grateful for this effort
and we were pleased to reward that commitment with a strong performance on the pitch
Despite coasting to the top-six with a nine-point advantage
and the post-split campaign will be the perfect opportunity for the squad to test and develop their standards on the pitch
“Ultimately the season is far from over,” Inglis said
“We’ve worked hard to get to this point
and we want to take the experience of the top-six in our stride
and we want to demonstrate the ability and belief we have within the squad
“We’ve enjoyed and celebrated the moment
but we now turn our attention back to the league and prepare for our final pre-split fixture against Glasgow City
Dom Thompson believes the play style Michael Wimmer is trying to implement at Motherwell suits the players that are in the dressing room
Thompson think all the players have been given a boost with the new manager’s arrival and wants to start getting points on the board
Michael Wimmer was pleased with what he saw in his first game against Dundee United
and is very much looking forward to his first match at Fir Park on Wednesday night
Wimmer wants to see his players perform like he sees them do in training
and also provides an update on a number of players
After celebrating their long-awaited and record-breaking top-six finish
Motherwell are on the road to Springburn to face Glasgow City in their final pre-split fixture at Petershill Park on Sunday
for the first time in the club’s history
after overcoming a 2-1 deficit at the half-time break before coasting to an assured 4-2 victory in East Kilbride
The women of steel will look to test their top-six pedigree this weekend against title-chasers Glasgow City ahead of a closely-fought 12-game post-split campaign
Motherwell completed an exceptional top-six shootout
coasting to an unmatched nine-point advantage over closest-rivals and dethroned top-six rivals Partick Thistle to complete a fiercely contested top-half of the SWPL table
Paul Brownlie’s side will look to frustrate and disrupt their top-six competitors
with four sides locked on 51-points in an exhilarating title-race
Momentum has remained with the North Lanarkshire side since the start of 2025
earning five-straight victories in all competitions
with Motherwell finding the target 24-times whilst conceding only four during the same time
Motherwell will look to rectify their spirited defeat to City in September last year
with Emily Whelan netting the only-goal in an impressive and competitive display at K-Park
Rangers and Hibernian all maintaining their impeccable run of form
defeated only by Hibs in the Scottish Capital whilst being held to a four-goal stalemate to defending champions Celtic

Marvin Kaleta is in contention having returned to training
Apostolos Stamatelopoulos is training with the team
Michael Wimmer’s first game didn’t go fully to plan against Dundee United
but he was able to take a lot of positives from the 1-0 loss
Johnny Koutroumbis played his first 90 minutes in a Motherwell shirt
offering another option on the right-hand side of the pitch
Sam Nicholson and Shane Blaney are going to be missing for a period of time
but Wimmer will be encouraged to see Kaleta and Stamatelopoulos back on the training pitch ahead of this game
It’s six defeats in a row for Motherwell
and with four points separating Dundee and the Steelmen
a win on Wednesday night would open up some breathing space to the bottom end of the table
Dundee’s last win the Premiership came on the same day as Motherwell’s
A 3-1 win over St Johnstone has been followed up with two draws and four defeats in the league
with the two draws coming against Celtic and Rangers
Tony Docherty’s side have beaten city rivals Dundee United in the Scottish Cup
as well as dumping Airdrie out of the competition
Simon Murray remains the Dee’s top goalscorer on 14 this season
with Rangers-bound Lyall Cameron on ten goals
The Michael Wimmer era kicked off in the City of Discovery as the Steelmen looked to get their season back on track under the guidance of their new boss
Having made his vision clear to the supporters
a hearty following made the journey north to see the new system being implemented
Wimmer described the performance as a positive one
with him now having a better picture of each player in his squad
Sam Dalby scored the only goal of the game in what was a disappointing first-half
Motherwell showed signs of revival and will consider themselves unlucky not to have found the back of the net
The new Well boss was upbeat and positive after the game and appreciated the warm welcome from the supporters
with his focus quickly moving to his first Fir Park match on Wednesday night against Dundee
Michael Wimmer’s side battled back valiantly to earn a point in the Fir Park sun
A deflected goal from Caolan Boyd-Munce and a smart finish from Killian Phillips gave Saints a two-goal lead
before Callum Slattery’s well-measured strike reduced the leeway before half-time
Slattery’s equaliser in an injury-strewn second half
including a serious one to Saints’ Boyd-Munce
was enough to see both sides having to settle for a share of the points
Michael Wimmer made two changes from the side which won at Ibrox two weeks ago
Stephen O’Donnell returned to the back three
while striker Luke Plange was given his first start up front in place of the injured Luke Armstrong
It should have been the perfect start for the Steelmen
a defensive mix-up at the edge of the Saints box allowed Tom Sparrow to race through on goal
But as Zach Hemming advanced from his line
the Well wide man lifted the ball over the keeper and his open goal
The home goal had a narrow escape 22 minutes in when Dom Thompson’s poor clearance forced O’Donnell to head the ball off his own goal line
The Well captain was less fortunate a minute later when the Paisley men took the lead
Although Boyd-Munce’s shot from 25 yards was on target
O’Donnell’s head sent the ball into the opposite corner of Balcombe’s goal
While Lennon Miller and Slattery pushed forward at every turn to support Plange
the Buddies doubled their lead with a well-taken goal
who chested the ball down before his half volley sent the ball flying past Balcombe from 16 yards
Balcombe’s long ball was worked towards the visitor’s penalty area by Slattery
where he sidestepped Alex Iacovitti before steering the ball with the outside of his right boot inside Hemming’s right-hand post for a superb finish
the Steelmen then had a period of sustained possession and pressure in the final third of the pitch
A couple of minutes from half-time they almost found the equaliser with a swift attack
O’Donnell’s long diagonal ball found Thompson racing towards the box
and after he stretched to pull the ball back for Miller
the 18-year-old could only fire wide of target
the Well boss brought on the experienced Harry Paton and Tony Watt at the expense of Kai Andrews and the hard-working Plange
who had a difficult shift against the physical presence of Saints central defenders
play was broken up with a series of clumsy challenges
Iacovitti’s robust challenge took out several players
After a lengthy treatment on the touchline
the Saints midfielder was stretchered off wearing a neck brace
It took Well only a couple of minutes after the long stoppage to find their feet and the equaliser
Watt’s touch at the edge of the box inadvertently set up Slattery
who smacked the ball low and hard into the right-hand corner of Hemming’s goal to make it 2-2
A minute later the game was halted again after a head knock between Liam Gordon and Toyosi Olusanya forced another substitution with Kofi Balmer coming into the Well central defence
play became rather ragged and hurried as both teams chased a winning goal
reducing the visitors to 10 men for the final 20 minutes
All of that added up to 14 additional minutes and sufficient time for Well to press home their extra man
With 96 minutes showing on the stadium clock
but a winner for a third consecutive game never came
A dedicated and loyal addition to the Motherwell backline
defender Katie Rice entered the 2024/25 campaign ready to mark her sixth consecutive season at the club by earning a place in the top-six of the Scottish Women’s Premier League
As the final pre-split fixture came to a close
the women of steel can firmly set their sights on the top-six when they welcome title-chasers Rangers to K-Park on Sunday
Rice acknowledged the effort to reach this milestone
but remained adamant that the squad aren’t there to make up numbers
“We are in the top-six to compete,”Rice explained
“We have earned the right to compete amongst the best by becoming highest performing part-time team in the country
Whilst we’re all incredibly proud to reach the top-six
“We want the top-six to be a regular occurrence for the squad
and we need to be consistent to achieve this
you have to perform against the full-time teams and we want to showcase what we’re capable of this weekend
“Rangers will always be a difficult test
they have an incredibly talented squad who understand that every single point matters for them at this stage of the title race
but ultimately we can only focus on ourselves and ensure we can carry out our gameplan effectively.”
Preparations swiftly resumed following last weekend’s Scottish Cup Quarter-Final victory over Boroughmuir Thistle
as the women of steel secured their place in the final-four at Hampden
Louisa Boyes broke the deadlock midway through the first-half before a Boroughmuir Thistle own-goal doubled Motherwell’s advantage moments later
Captain Gill Inglis sealed victory shortly before the half-time break
as the experienced defender curled home a magnificent right-footed effort into the top-left corner
“We certainly celebrated the night of the game,” Rice added
“It was a massive moment for the squad to get back to Hampden for the first-time since 2022
so we made sure to celebrate after the game
but once Monday came around; we were straight back into our preparations for the game this weekend
“Training has been really positive this week
who represented Scotland under-17s back involved
and there has been a really friendly atmosphere amongst the squad
There is a real bond between the players in the dressing room
we all want to support each other to drive our standards and performances forward
and we will be ready to start our top-six fixtures this weekend
A familiar face will line-up against the women of steel this weekend
as striker Laura Berry returns to K-Park for the first-time since departing Motherwell to return to her parent club in January
after countless impressive display in a Motherwell jersey; netting 11-goals in 11-appearances
Rice is relishing the opportunity against her former teammate
“It will be great to face off against Laura,” Rice joked
“Laura was an exceptional player throughout the season
and an absolutely pivotal part in achieving a top-six finish
but we’re on either side of the pitch now
we’ll be looking to capitalise on our knowledge of her style of play and will try to nullify her game as best as we can
“It’s going to be incredibly tough to cope with the immense talent at their disposal
but we’ve prepared in the correct manner
are feeling positive heading into this weekend
and are ready to make K-Park a difficult venue for teams to visit
The K-Park faithful have backed the women of steel both home and away this season
leading the squad to the top-six and a place in the Scottish Cup Semi-Final
and Rice hopes their following can guide Motherwell to a successful post-split campaign
“The support we’ve received this season has been excellent,” Rice said
“The crowds at K-Park have continued to grow season upon season
and with our position in the top-six and our Scottish cup run
we’re really keen to hopefully see these attendances grow
We’re really excited by the challenges at this stage of the season
and we hope to see you all supporting us through each game
“I can’t wait to see you all backing us from the first whistle to the last this Sunday
Apostolos Stamatelopoulos has been ruled out for at least eight weeks with a fractured wrist
it became clear that he would be unable to play and will missing for at least two months
Lennon Miller was delightfully surprised at his inclusion in the latest Scotland squad
saying he was expecting his Under 21 call-up only
Miller is looking forward to joining up with his Scotland teammates
so he can learn as much as possible from the experienced players within the ranks of Steve Clarke’s squad
Miller remains grounded and is looking forward to trying to match his father’s total number of caps
Manager Michael Wimmer was thrilled to see Lennon Miller called up to the senior Scotland squad
and believes that the 18-year-old is more than ready for the step up in class
Wimmer is aware of the talent he has and has already picked up on the maturity he shows
The manager was also pleased to see Kai Andrews receive his first senior call up to the Welsh national side
Tawanda Maswanhise has earned a call-up to the latest Zimbabwe squad
The Warriors will continue their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign later this month
They will play two matches during this international window
First up is Benin on Thursday 20 March at home
with the game being played in South Africa
before travelling to face Nigeria on Tuesday 25 March
Maswanhise and Zimbabwe will hoping to get their campaign back on track
as they currently sit bottom of their group on two points after four games
with three teams joint top on seven points
they know a couple of positive results can get them up the table
Kai Andrews has been named in the senior Wales squad for the first time
The 18-year-old arrived in January and has been a pivotal part in Michael Wimmer’s side
Having represented at the youth levels for Wales
Craig Bellamy has included the 18-year-old in his squad that will take part in two World Cup Qualifiers
They will face Kazakhstan on Saturday 22 March at home
before travelling to face North Macedonia on Tuesday 25 March
with Wales in a group alongside Belgium and Liechtenstein also
Ewan Wilson will travel to Spain with Scotland’s Under 21 side later this month
Scot Gemmill has assembled a young squad ahead of the new Under-21 cycle
They will play two friendly matches whilst in Spain
taking on Republic of Ireland on Friday 21 March
These two friendlies will act as preparation for the EURO 2027 qualifiers which get underway later this year
Motherwell FC and Motherwell FC Community Trust are immensely proud to host Scotland’s first Iftar celebration at a football stadium

“The fact that the holy month of Ramadan is being celebrated at a football club creates a truly special relationship for the Scottish Muslim community – connecting both our Scottish and Muslim identity together in a heartening way.”
The Iftar event will host an impressive array of speakers including:

Motherwell return to action on Saturday 15 March against St Mirren at Fir Park in the William Hill Premiership
There will be a minute’s applause prior to kick off on Saturday in memory of well-known former player and coach Cammy Murray who recently passed away
Cammy also had a 10-year spell with today’s opponents St Mirren and was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 2019
Cammy was very well known to so many and also was a former PE teacher at Lanark Academy
Our popular Beer Garden will be open to all from 12:30pm until kick off entry via the walkway to the right of the Phil O’Donnell Stand
The Cooper Bar will be open from 12 noon serving food and drink
Come along and have a bite to eat and a drink before the match
The bar will also be open post-match for an hour for those wanting to avoid any traffic
Guide Dogs North Lanarkshire will be on hand collecting money for a bucket collection
Turning Point Scotlands North Lanarkshire Crisis Outreach Service will be delivering Naloxone training and overdose awareness prior to the match
The staff will be based at John Hunter stand
Saturday’s match is Well Society Day and the third of our Junior Steel matches
Junior Steel members can claim up to 4 free tickets for the match
Email: ticketing@motherwellfc.co.uk with the name of the junior and how many tickets are required by Thursday
We will have some half time entertainment on Saturday
with a competition between some of the mascots from both clubs
Apostolos Stamatelopoulos has been training and is in contention for this match
Aston Oxborough has also been training but will be assessed before the game
The Michael Wimmer era got well and truly started prior to that break
picking up back-to-back wins for the first time since December in the Premiership
A midweek win over Dundee and an impressive 2-1 win over Rangers at Ibrox has left the Steelmen sitting in the top-six
the league remains congested with just four games to go before the split
St Mirren were also not in action last weekend
having been put out the Scottish Cup by Hearts
The Paisley side have one win in their last six
however that win came at Ibrox against Rangers
Toyosi Olusanya remains the top goalscorer for Stephen Robinson’s side but former Motherwell man Mikael Mandron has been in a rich vein of form of late
We can confirm that Kofi Balmer’s red card has been rescinded
and the defender is available to face Hearts on Saturday
The club are delighted that the correct decision has eventually been reached
this doesn’t get away from the fact Motherwell played with ten men for over 75 minutes in an important fixture just prior to the split
This is the second time this season the club has had to go through the time
effort and expenditure to appeal a red card decision
We have concerns that VAR felt that this was an obvious refereeing error in the first place
the on-field review has come out with the wrong outcome
We spend a significant six-figure sum each season towards the running costs of VAR at the stadium
There have been eight instances so far this season where Motherwell have been directly impacted by what has subsequently been deemed an incorrect referee or VAR decision
This was as recent as last week when a tackle on Andy Halliday went unpunished
and the SFA’s KMI panel viewed it as a unanimous red card
These continued errors throughout the season
will have a direct impact on where teams will finish in the final standings
which obviously determines finances for each club
We hope that with the financial commitment put on the club to use VAR
combined with the frustration our fans get from the game due to the intervention from VAR
we see significant improvement in its implementation going forward
Motherwell will face Hearts on Saturday 12 April at Fir Park in the William Hill Premiership
The Motherwell FC Community Trust will be collecting money by bucket collection on Saturday
hand in any spare change that can go towards helping those within our community
There will be a display in the Cooper Stand for when the players emerge from the tunnel
There will be a minute’s applause on the 53rd minute to remember Karen Ferguson
Our beer garden will be open for home fans only from 12.30pm for pre match drinks
The Cooper Bar will be also open to home and away supporters from 12 noon until kick off serving food and drink
We await to hear the outcome of Kofi Balmer’s appeal
Motherwell have lost their last two games against Aberdeen and Kilmarnock
Kofi Balmer saw red just 25 minutes into the game at the weekend
which made it a difficult afternoon for the Steelmen
Stephen O’Donnell and Tom Sparrow helped Motherwell on their way to a 3-1 win against Hearts earlier in the season at Fir Park
Hearts came away with the points at Tynecastle
The Jambos have won two and lost three of their last five matches
Elton Kabangu has been a revelation for Neil Critchley’s side since joining in January
