A Shrewsbury Crown Court judge considered handing him a suspended sentence, but came to the conclusion that if he hadn’t been caught, “it would still be going on”.
The court was told how police investigated Turnock on suspicion of voyeurism and seized memory cards as well as devices, on which his offending was discovered.
He carried out the “upskirting” in the shops in June last year and other voyeurism on various dates.
Turnock was arrested and interviewed by police. He told officers he carried out filming for his own “sexual gratification”, but that he had not distributed his recordings.
Dafydd Williams has been on the coaching staff at Newport since former boss Graham Coughlan brought him in from Bristol Rovers
Newport County interim manager Dafydd Williams says "a lot needs to change" at the club before next season
County's disappointing 2024-25 ended with a 4-1 home defeat by Tranmere Rovers which saw them finish just above the League Two relegation zone
Williams took charge for the final two games of the season after Nelson Jardim recently left his role as head coach
we've probably finished in the position we deserve to finish," Williams told BBC Sport Wales
"It's not good enough for this football club and those that are here next year – that has to be a real reality check for them because in my opinion a lot of it is unacceptable
"A lot needs to change to move forward and to go in the right direction as a football club."
County chairman Huw Jenkins, who wants Jardim's successor in place by the end of the month, acknowledged the team had struggled for consistency
Jenkins said he wanted to create a buzz at Newport once again with the club challenging for the play-offs as well as FA Cup runs
is an exciting place to be," Williams added
"I think we can learn a lot of lessons from this season in terms of what's needed and what's required and whether that's with the players that are in the building or potentially coming in over the summer
they need to learn the harsh reality of what League Two."

A fundraiser has been launched to raise money to offer as a reward to help catch those responsible for the death of two nesting swans in Newport
Two breeding swans, which had been nesting along the towpath on Newport canal
were both found dead on the morning of Thursday
West Mercia Police believe the pair had both been shot with an air rifle overnight
A clutch of 11 of the swans' eggs were taken in by Cuan Wildlife Rescue
In need of a larger incubator, the charity launched an appeal to raise £300, but received more than £2,000 in donations in a matter of hours
another fundraiser has been launched by a Newport resident
in the hopes of being able to offer a reward for information that would help police with their investigation
In just two days, the 'Justice for Newport swans' fundraiser has raised almost £1,000
Newport Councillor Peter Scott said the incident had caused great distress in the town
He said: "We are all hoping for some good news about the eggs from Cuan Wildlife
The whole community are upset with what happened to the swans."
police issued an appeal for information about the incident
A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: "The Newport Safer Neighbourhood team continue to investigate the unlawful killing of two swans that were incubating their eggs on their nest in Victoria Park
"We believe both swans were shot with an air rifle sometime in the night over April 30 to May 1
"We are viewing CCTV of the area at the key times and are appealing for information from anyone that may lead us to who carried out this cruel attack
"One small consolation to this sad story is that the eggs left behind from the killing of the swans have been taken to an incubator and we hope will have survived."
Anybody with information is being urged to contact West Mercia Police directly, the local Safer Neighbourhood Team or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 if they wish to remain anonymous.
Huw Jenkins spent 17 years with Swansea City
Newport County want to appoint a new manager by the end of May and chairman Huw Jenkins says there has been plenty of interest in the vacancy
Nelson Jardim recently left his role as head coach by mutual consent after just under a season in charge of the League Two club
Assistant Dafydd Williams stepped up to take interim charge for the final two games of the season
with Jenkins looking to make a permanent appointment by the end of the month
"I think it's important it's done in May," Jenkins told BBC Radio Wales Sport
"But first and foremost it has to be right for us – anybody who comes in to manage our club
"They have to know clearly where they are and what we're trying to do."
Williams open to managing Newport full time
Former Swansea City chairman Jenkins become Newport's majority shareholder and chairman in January 2024.
Jenkins confirmed there has been more interest from candidates in the managerial position than last year
"Things have definitely changed a little bit
the perception outwardly on Newport County has changed a little bit," Jenkins said
"Some of the conversations I had last summer are different to now because we've had many phone calls off people who are interested in putting their name forward
"People can see and probably feel what we're trying to do as a club
and perhaps they may have been reluctant to dip their toes in the water last season and they wanted to see how things went
"Perhaps they've reconsidered that and feel we can provide as a football club the opportunity for people."
Jenkins insisted appointing Jardim as head coach last July was not a mistake but acknowledged the team had struggled for consistency
"We started the season in a reasonable way
and went on a period of losing a few games," Jenkins added
"That sort of form continued right through the season
"Every time we thought we were getting somewhere we went backwards
and when we would go backwards we somehow found something that got us forward again
"It's slightly been below the word comfortable but overall I think we've got to take it on the chin
"We've got to quickly move on and make sure we learn a few lessons from this year and make sure we're better next year."
Newport's disappointing season ended with a 4-1 defeat at home to Tranmere Rovers which saw them finish just above the relegation zone
Jenkins wants to create a buzz at Newport once again with the club challenging for the play-offs as well as FA Cup runs
"I didn't get involved with the club just to have the odd cup run and
like we have done the last couple of years
just to avoid relegation," Jenkins said
"I decided to take the risk and bring in younger players to develop – we've learnt from that from this season
"Getting into play-off finals like Newport have done with the last 8-10 years is important
"We've got to create that proper mentality within the club that we want to do that regularly
"We want to be up in the top 10 – the odd year you're going to get in there and have a chance and we also need to be around that fighting our way
"My main remit – and it goes back to what I've experienced in the past – is making sure every year you build on it and every year you get better than the year before
"If we continue that we'll certainly have a chance in the next few years to get those feelings back around the club
"It's important we get that feeling back at the club."

Newport RFC v Aberavon RFC – 3rd May 2025 by John Evans
Newport had been seeded at home to face Aberavon
a side that play with terrific ambition and no little talent
and Newport would need to be somewhere near their best to overcome the Wizards
It was an absolutely beautiful day at Newport Stadium
but the strong breeze would undoubtedly play a part in proceedings
with Newport defending the Cricket Club end of the ground
Newport worked hard in defence but were instantly caught cold as a few popped passes to the left opened the Black & Ambers up a treat
Wing Felix Gilbert took the final pass and glided in to score in the corner with double figure seconds on the clock
Ben Roach trucking it up the middle to the 22
but Aberavon had hands all over the ball in the ruck
Jac Lloyd’s kick to touch didn’t yield much yardage
but Josh Skinner gathered the lineout ball to set up a powerful rolling maul
the Wizards were adept at stopping these drives and won themselves the turnover
A fantastic effort from the Newport front three trio of Devine
and Harris shoved Aberavon backwards and won another penalty
A scruffy lineout was recovered by Dafydd Buckland
before visiting centre Bradley Roderick found himself offside at a ruck
boomed a pass out to Lloyd Lewis who sprinted for the line
almost cartwheeling in to touch the ball down over the line
so the scoreboard now read Newport 5 Aberavon 5 with 9 minutes played
Ed Dunford slotting the three-pointer to make it Newport 5 Aberavon 8 with 12 minutes played
Aberavon were intent on making a statement
They kept ball well and fullback Scott Delnevo stepped through some loose tackling to threaten the Newport line
but he was downed metres short and spilled the ball
Iestyn Galton ran infield to collect a high ball and motored into the visitors half
but Aberavon were impatient in defence again
Tom Devine was first to bludgeon forward before the ball went wide
but the final pass to Lloyd Lewis was horribly forward
Newport were caught offside on their own 22
The lineout went long to flanker Rhys Thomas
before hooker Luke Davies claimed the try in the corner
making the score Newport 5 Aberavon 13 with 22 minutes played
Jac Lloyd lined up his penalty shot at goal
but the kick sailed to the left of the sticks
leaving the score a 5-13 with 26 minutes played
Carwyn Penny caught the restart before passing to Jac Lloyd
He had Kyle Tayler in support before Dafydd Buckland appeared
He took the pass before haring off at top speed
just a handful of metres short of the line
Newport tried to run out of defence on 30 minutes
a loose pass putting them back into trouble
put in a tantalising kick that had Chay Foster-Smith competing with opposite number Joe Gage
but the Aberavon man knocked on as the ball stood up in the corner
The Wizards worked hard to create an opening
but a pass out to the wings was picked off by Dafydd Buckland
He set off on a lung-busting sprint to the line
Scott Delnevo and wing Cori Lewis-Jenkins raced back to cover
and it looked for all the world the Lewis-Jenkins had succeeded in stopping the try
but Dafydd Buckland got the ball down and the referee
so the score now was Newport 12 Aberavon 13 with 32 minutes played
Aberavon were letting Newport have very little space to get going
while progress at forward was minimal as the big men cancelled each other out
Aberavon ratcheted up their efforts as the half drew to a close
An excellent kick to the corner bounced unkindly for Carwyn Penny as it went to touch
Ed Dunford put his teammates into the corner again
The lineout set for a third time and again
hooker Luke Davies let his pack down by overthrowing
Jac Lloyd seized the ball and booted it dead to draw the half to a close
Half Time: Newport RFC 12 Aberavon RFC 13
Aberavon making an absolute hash of the kick
but the ball slipped through his hands onto George Young
inadvertently changing the point of attack
The Wizards pack again wrapped up the maul and gained the turnover
and the chat between Mr David and Ben Roach would certainly have caused concern
when Dafydd Buckland inched offside at a maul just 2 minutes later
Mr David had nowhere to go other than his top pocket
Aberavon sought to exploit the numerical advantage by going wide quickly
A cross-kick to Felix Gilbert found the Aberavon man being met by Iestyn Galton
who pushed the attack back out and away from the line
Newport stepped up their defensive efforts and earned a break when Aberavon offended at a tackle situation
but this was missed by the refereeing team as play went on
There then followed the most ‘Keystone Cops’ section of play that has been seen for a long while
Scott Delnevo missed the pass completely; the cover defender overran the ball
Newport broke and sprinted toward the line
before over-complicating it and losing possession
Cori Lewis-Jenkins gained the ball and ran out of defence
bobbling loose for Jac Lloyd to scoop up and gallop 60-metres to score in the corner
he then regained his composure to slot the two-pointer
Lloyd Lewis was given room to manoeuvre but was tackled
before Jac Lloyd noted how flat the Aberavon defence had become
A well-aimed kick had Iestyn Galton in pursuit
allowing the ball to roll to where he wanted it
Jac Lloyd kicked the conversion to make it Newport 26 Aberavon 13 on 52 minutes
Newport lost Max Williams to a yellow card
The big man had made a clumsy tackle on a player dipping into contact
phases being successfully completed against 14 players takes its toll
and Rhys Thomas picked a nice line to score under the crossbar
Ed Dunford kicked the conversion to make it Newport 26 Aberavon 20 on 57 minutes
Ty Morris changed his front row on the hour
it was Aberavon’s turn to attract Mr David’s stern gaze
Lloyd Lewis had run out of defence up to the Newport 22
Dafydd Buckland was preparing to launch the ball away from the base of the ruck before Wizards openside Ben Gregory stepped across the ruck and neutralised the Newport 9
Ed Dunford’s neat kick behind the Newport defence hadn’t accounted for Dai Richards
before sprinting straight to the tryline and score under the crossbar
Jac Lloyd kicked the conversion to make the score Newport 33 Aberavon 20 on 64 minutes
George Young was relieved of duty by Josh Reid on 67 minutes
Kyle Tayler was doing Kyle Tayler things on the deck
the ball magically reappearing Newport’s side
Josh Skinner carried hard into contact; Ollie Drake pushed the move on
Jac Lloyd was controlling play nicely before putting Dai Richards into space
Richards’ outrageous dummy appeared to wrongfoot the entire Aberavon backline
leaving the blond centre to coast in to score
making the score Newport 40 Aberavon 20 on 69 minutes
while Luke Crane came on for Dafydd Buckland
A terrific 50:22 by Jac Lloyd turned defence into attack on 72 minutes
Newport fought well but blew their position by going off their feet at a ruck
Chay Foster-Smith and Dai Richards were withdrawn to enable Barney Nightingale and Elliot Frewen to take the field
and they kicked to the corner following a penalty decision
setting up a rolling maul which Ashton Evans finished off
This made the score Newport 40 Aberavon 25 on 78 minutes
Newport were involved in some spirited defending into stoppage time
Lloyd Lewis reached out for an interception but only knocked the ball on
Mr David had little hesitation reaching for his pocket to issue Newport’s third yellow card of the afternoon
but it seemed an odd decision as it was outside the 22 and there was plenty of cover behind him
Josh Reid carrying the ball away before booting clear
Cardiff RFC were seeing off a spirited effort from Bridgend RFC at the Parc yr Arfau
so it will be a trip to the Capital City next weekend for the Black & Ambers
Please keep an eye on the Newport RFC socials this week
Final Score – Newport RFC 40 Aberavon RFC 25

It's a historic pub which sits in beautiful countryside on the Shropshire and Staffordshire border and is a pub which sees people come back for the great food
landlords have to look at how they want to sell their pubs to customers in order to get them to come back
Some go down the route of being a simple drinkers pub
selling a large range of drinks and very little food
while other pubs go down the gastronomic route and prioritise food over drink
there are pubs that work to be everything to everyone and provide an experience that makes people want to come back again and again
The Red Lion at Great Chatwell is a pub which the landlady Sharon Fowels said she wanted to be a destination pub and somewhere that she could attract in people from across the region
Located on the border between Shropshire and Staffordshire
the pub sits in a small hamlet deep in the countryside and has been part of the community since the 17th century
with reports showing brewing taking place at the end of the 18th century
it was purchased by locals Kevin and Rachel Shaw in 2023 and reopened as a free house in April that year under the stewardship of Ms Fowels
who said she had been in the pub trade for years and was looking to leave it until she got a call from the Shaws

It must pain her that so many billionaires have been behaving so badly of late
While there’s nothing inherently wrong with aspiring to amass lots of money
the next generation of billionaires is playing fast and loose with their souls if their primary role models are the ones dominating today’s headlines
Wouldn’t it be grand if they looked instead to the Hobo Ethical Code, a serious standard of behavior established at the Hobo National Convention of 1889
Given the peripatetic lifestyle of these migratory workers, it was up to the individual to hold himself or herself to this knightly standard
Hoboes prided themselves on their self-reliance and honesty
as well as their compassion for their fellow humans
The environment and the most vulnerable members of our society stand to benefit if tomorrow’s billionaires take it to heart
Decide your own life; don’t let another person run or rule you
always respect the local law and officials
Don’t take advantage of someone who is in a vulnerable situation
By doing so you not only help a business along
but ensure employment should you return to that town again
make your own work by using your added talents at crafts
Do not allow yourself to become a stupid drunk and set a bad example for locals’ treatment of other hobos
another hobo will be coming along who will need them as badly
do not leave garbage where you are jungling
cause no problems with the operating crew or host railroad
another hobo will be coming along who will need passage through that yard
Do not allow other hobos to molest children; expose all molesters to authorities…they are the worst garbage to infest any society
Help your fellow hobos whenever and wherever needed

can you really claim to have seen Girl with a Pearl Earring at all
At that 108-gigapixel resolution, notes Jason Kottke, “each pixel is 1.3 microns in size — 1000 microns is 1 millimeter.” You can learn more about the technology behind the project in this making-of video produced by Hirox Europe
the local branch of the Japanese digital microscope company responsible for both the ten billion-pixel scan and this 108 billion-pixel one
which necessitated 88 hours of non-stop scanning this relatively small canvas of 15 inches by 17.5 inches
a process that resulted in 41,000 3D images
3D images: though Girl with a Pearl Earring
known as “the Mona Lisa of the North,” may be known far and wide in flat representations on pages
Vermeer achieved his ultra-realistic effects not just by putting the right colors in the right places, but applying them at the right thicknesses and with the right textures — all of which have been replicated in a “mega-sized” physical 3D print, 100 times larger than the original work, commissioned by the Mauritshuis for its Who’s that Girl? exhibition

When inventor Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville sang a nursery rhyme into his phonoautogram in 1860
he had no plans to ever play back this recording
the phonoautogram took inputs for the study of sound waves
but could not be turned into an output device
we can hear the voice of Scott in what is now considered the first ever recording of human sound
What you will hear in the above video are the various stages of reconstructing and reverse engineering the voice that sang on that April day in 1860
like wiping away decades of dirt and soot
Scott had looked to the invention of photography and wondered if something similar could be done with sound waves
focused as he was on improving stenography
And so the phonoautogram took in sound vibrations through a diaphragm
which moved a stylus against a rotating cylinder covered in lampblack
What was left was a wiggly line in a concentric circle
Scott’s invention never turned a profit and he went back to bookselling
The invention and some of the paper cylinders went into museums
In 2008, American audio historians discovered the scribbles and turned to the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and a software called IRENE
The software was designed to extract sounds from wax cylinders without touching the delicate surfaces
and the first pass revealed what they thought at first was a young woman or child singing “Au Clair de la lune,” the French nursery rhyme (not the Debussy piano work)
a further examination of Scott’s notes revealed that the recording was at a much slower speed
and it was a man—most probably Scott—singing the lullaby
The video shows the stages that brought Scott back to life: Denoising a lot of extraneous sound; stretching the recording back to natural time; “tuning and quantizing”–correcting for imperfections in the human-turned cylinder; cleaning up harmonics; and finally adding further harmonics
The result is less an unrecognizable ghost signal and more a touching sound of humanity
desiring somehow to have their voice live on

every aspect of William Shakespeare’s life has produced more speculation than any of us could digest in a lifetime
but also his even more scantily documented personal life
the known facts are these: on November 27th
1582 a marriage license was issued in Worcester to the 18-year-old William Shakespeare and the approximately 26-year-old Anne Hathaway
Six months later came the first of their three children
while Anne — willed only her husband’s “second-best bed” — remained in his hometown of Stratford-upon-Avon
the couple could not only have remained in communication
but also lived together in the capital for a time
“Hereford Cathedral Library holds a fragmentary seventeenth-century letter addressed to a ‘Mrs Shakspaire,’ concerning her husband’s dealings with a fatherless apprentice,” writes Steggle in his research paper recently published in the journal Shakespeare
“Of the Shakespeares recorded in London
William Shakespeare is the only viable candidate to fit with the letter’s details.” In Steggle’s analysis
it “paints a picture of William and Anne Shakespeare together in London
It further suggests an Anne Shakespeare who is not absent from her husband’s London life
but present and engaged in his financial and social networks.”
The New York Times’ Ephrat Livni quotes Steggle as saying that “this letter
offers a glimpse of the Shakespeares together in London
both involved in social networks and business matters
presenting a united front against importunate requests to help poor orphans.” This
would “lend some heft to feminist readings of Shakespeare’s life,” as well as to the pop-culture trend of “rethinking the marriage and Hathaway’s role in it.” Each era thus continues to create the Shakespeare for whom it feels the need — and the Mrs

It’s hard to believe, but Marvin Gaye’s classic 1967 recording of “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” was originally rejected by his record label
Gaye’s version might have been forgotten had it not been included in his 1968 album, In the Groove
“The DJs played it so much off the album,” Gordy said later
Gaye’s recording of the song became a crossover hit
It rose not only to the top of the R&B charts
but also spent seven weeks at the top of the Billboard Pop Singles chart
It was Motown’s biggest-selling single up to that time
and the In the Groove album name was soon changed to I Heard It Through the Grapevine
as did the backing vocal group The Andantes and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra

While you almost certainly know Simon & Garfunkel, you may not know Disturbed, who’ve been steadily popular in the metal world since the release of their debut album The Sickness in 2000. Listen to that album’s big single “Down with the Sickness,” and you’re instantly transported back to the turn of the millennium
when the exaggeratedly rhythmic and aggressive subgenre of “nu metal” reigned supreme
Entertaining though the sheer incongruity of a nu-metal version of “The Sound of Silence” would be, that movement had long since flamed out by 2015, when Disturbed recorded their cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s signature song. Instead, they take the haunting austerity of the original in a grandly mournful direction
and the kind of cavernous sensitivity in which metal acts occasionally indulge

the pilum came in both long and short lengths
Short pila had the advantage of distance
but long pila had the advantage of power
as well as the convenient feature — whether deliberately or accidentally implemented at first — that their shanks would more readily bend after impact
making them impractical to remove from the shields they’d penetrated
With his shield thus made unwieldy by one or more pila, an advancing combatant would thus be forced to discard it entirely — assuming he was still in the condition to do so. As you can see vividly demonstrated in the Smithsonian Channel video above
a pilum landing in the center of a shield could easily skewer anyone standing behind it
History has it that Roman soldiers were also trained to throw their pila where enemy shields overlapped
pinning them together and thus rendering twice as much of their defense useless
pila could be gathered from the battlefield for refurbishment

“Tom Jones and his show might’ve been seen as somewhat ‘square’ by the rockstar standards of CSNY,” writes Dangerous Minds,” but when the foursome agreed to appear in September of that year
just weeks after the massive festival in upstate New York
it turned into a memorable television event
with Jones taking lead vocals on “Long Time Gone” and blowing the audience and the band away
“The man’s mighty lungs inspire the rest of them to keep up
whose “face goes from one of disdain/’What am I doing here?’ to ‘This fucking rocks’ about halfway through.”
Even stranger than this combination is the fact that Young agreed to do it at all
He had become notoriously averse to doing television
even turning down The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and citing his hatred of TV as a reason for leaving Buffalo Springfield two years earlier
Though he may have been caught up in the moment
as his longtime manager Eliot Roberts told biographer Jimmy McDonough: “Neil went
It’s that shit.’ He always used to say ‘that shit.’ Crosby had this weed of doom… Neil never forgave me for that
but in retrospect it was embarrassing.” Young probably shouldn’t have worried
it didn’t seem to hurt his credibility as much as his bewildering (though critically re-appraised) 1982 New Wave record
reinventing himself in the 80s and 90s in good-humored self-parodies
then becoming a bona fide pop star once more
He has yet to appear again with Neil Young

Huw Evans Picture AgencyPublished2 May 2025Caretaker boss Dafydd Williams wants to put smiles on fans' faces in Newport County's final match of the season - and get their "juices flowing" for 2025-26
who took charge following Nelson Jardim's departure last month
says it has been a "disappointing" campaign with County sitting 21st in League Two
But he wants to end the season on a high when they host Tranmere Rovers at Rodney Parade on Saturday
urging his players to show more grit and determination than they have at times this season
"I want to see a Newport County performance
aggression and a competitive edge to us," said Williams
"I want us to get more attacking outcomes and defend our goal a bit better
There's been a lot this season where some might feel we've become disassociated with what a Newport team looks like and feels like
"We want to give everyone a great afternoon to finish off what's been a disappointing season
"I'd love nothing more than to give them that feeling at 5pm on Saturday that 'I've watched (a classic) Newport County today'
"Hopefully they can see a performance that gets the juices flowing for next season."
Williams stepped in for the final two games of the season following Jardim's departure by mutual consent after just under a season in charge
In recent months County have struggled to string wins together and climb the table
But Williams, who says he is open to succeeding Jardim on a permanent basis if asked
believes fans can feel optimistic of improvements in 2025-26
"I do think it's an exciting time for the club mid-to-long term," he said
if we can bring back that Newport County feeling on a Saturday afternoon
then I think it'd be a really enjoyable place to be
and something I'd love to be a part of."

Europe will celebrate eight decades since the formal acceptance by the Allies of Germany's unconditional surrender
huge crowds took to the streets across the country to rejoice after almost six years of fighting
To celebrate the anniversary this week, several events have been planned across the West Midlands
Kickstarting the week, a 1940s event was held in Newport on Monday to celebrate
reflect and remember the sacrifices made by those who lived through the war
Attendees were encouraged to come dressed in clothing from the era for a day packed with classic war-time songs
Ann Whitfield from the Royal British Legion said it was a “lovely way” to kick off the celebrations of the anniversary taking place across the county all week
She said: “We had a nice steady flow of people all day
lots of cups of tea drunk and a lot of cake eaten
The WI had a stall on explaiing rationing and they were all agog about how little people had to eat
She said along with the music from the era
there were people there with their own family stories of experiences during the ear
“It was a lovely community event and really worthwhile
