Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has marked the start of construction on the new £5.6m Newtownards to Bangor Greenway
This project is funded by the Department for Infrastructure in conjunction with the Department for Transport (DfT) through the Levelling Up Fund (LUF) and Ards and North Down Borough Council
The 5.4km long greenway utilises much of the old railway track and will run between Floodgates
It includes up to four-metre-wide paths for walking and cycling with accompanying railings
Attending the commencement of construction Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins said: "I am delighted that my Department could contribute £2.8m to deliver this greenway project between Bangor and Newtownards and it is great to be here today to see work on the ground underway
"Active travel is a key element in addressing climate change and creating cleaner and greener spaces that are open to everyone
By investing in greenways and other high quality active travel infrastructure we are giving people more options to think about how they travel and helping them embrace healthier lifestyles
"This greenway will benefit both the local community and visitors to the area and will complement plans for further development opportunities in Ards and North Down
including opportunities that will arise through my Department's Active Travel Delivery Plan
Once completed this greenway will provide a safe alternative route for those who choose to leave the car at home and use it to travel to work or to study
to visit family and friends or simply just for leisure
"By making small changes such as choosing to walk
wheel or cycle we can all make a big difference in beating congestion
and improving our physical and mental wellbeing
"This project is a fine example of the value of Government bodies working together to deliver for local communities."
The scheme will utilise the former railway track and will be completed in two stages
Stage one has now commenced between Belvedere Road
Stage 2 will be between Whitespots and Green Road
mostly following the former railway line in a north easterly direction towards Green Road
Bangor where it will link with the existing shared path along Green Road
Minister Kimmins was joined by other funders
Ards and North Down's Mayor Councillor Alastair Cathcart and representatives from UK Government
Mayor Cathcart said: "It is fantastic to see work progressing 'on the ground' on this new greenway
The 5.4km route will help to better connect the town of Newtownards with the city of Bangor by providing a new safe path for those who want to walk
We expect it to be popular with leisure users
including those wanting to undertake exercise or to access Whitespots Country Park/Ark Farm
as well as those who are commuting to work or a place of study such as the South East Regional College campus in Ards
We are immensely grateful to our funders for their financial and technical support and to our contractors Charles Brand for their enthusiastic and innovative approach to delivering this exciting green infrastructure project."
DfT Local Transport Minister Simon Lightwood said: "I'm pleased to see construction begin on this greenway
which will make walking and cycling between Newtownards and Bangor easier
and more accessible than ever before."We know investment in active travel helps people live happier and healthier lives
This is why we are funding Ards and North Down Borough Council £3.2m through the Levelling up Fund - £2.3m of which is going to support this important project."
The project is expected to take around 12 months to complete.

Police at the scene of an incident where a dog has been shot in the Scrabo area of Newtownards on April 3rd 2025 - Photo by Kevin Scott
Police have shot a dog – described by a local councillor as an “XL bully type dog” – after it injured two people in Newtownards
Officers responded to reports of a dog that attacked a man and woman in the Rathmullan Drive area today
Emergency services responded to the incident in the Scrabo estate shortly after 6.30pm
The pair were given first aid for their injuries at the scene before being taken to hospital
The dog was “destroyed” by specially trained officers due to being a risk to the public
Several officers attended including the PSNI dog unit
A PSNI spokesman said: “Police attended a property in the Rathmullen Drive area of Newtownards on Thursday 3rd April
following a report that a dog attacked a man and a woman
“The man and woman were given first aid for their injuries at the scene before being conveyed to hospital
The dog was destroyed by specially trained officers
the office of the Police Ombudsman have been informed.”
DUP councillor Stephen McIlveen expressed his concern at the incident
saying it was “worrying news coming from the Scrabo this evening
with an XL bully type dog having to be killed by armed police”
"I'm hoping that no one is seriously injured
It's terribly sad that an animal has been killed in this way
but a heavily populated area where there are young children is not a suitable place for dogs such as these that are known to pose such a risk,” added the DUP Group Leader on Ards and North Down Borough Council
It has been illegal since the start of the year to own an XL bully in Northern Ireland without an exemption certificate
The dogs must also be neutered as part of the exemption conditions
although this can be completed after the application is submitted
XL bully-type dogs were added to the list of restricted breeds in Northern Ireland last summer

Translink confirms no bus or train services on Friday morning.
Translink has apologised to passengers in Co Down after over a dozen Ulsterbus services were axed at short notice.
A total of seven routes including morning rush-hour services between Newtownards and Belfast were cancelled with only those customers checking the public transport provider’s social media channels aware of the changes.
The company issued a service update which was shared online at 7.52pm on Thursday.
“We have some service adjustments to #Newtownards services tomorrow, 21st March,” it posted on X, alongside a link to a list of services impacted.
“Apologies for the inconvenience this may cause you.”
The list included the 6.30am, 8am, 8.40am and 9am buses to Belfast, including early morning buses to Dundonald Park and Ride where the Glider service pick-up and drop-off is based.
The Belfast Telegraph is aware of elderly passengers who were at the bus stop on time and left confused as to why there was no sign of the buses they were expecting to depart on.
A number of afternoon buses between Newtownards to Bangor were also on the list of cancellations as well as the 3.30pm Newtownards to Belfast service and 4.35pm bus in the opposite direction.
A number of evening services from Belfast city centre to Newtownards via Dundonald Park and Ride – including the 5.40pm bus – have also been axed.
Further cancellations were announced on Friday afternoon affecting services between Newtownards and Bangor and Newtownards to Ballywalter via Carrowdore.
This newspaper understands that a high volume of staff absences has wreaked havoc on the rota requiring services to be adjusted at the last minute.
One source said more than half-a-dozen drivers were off on Friday which has caused the issues.
Translink has blamed “unforeseen operational circumstances”.
"There will be some adjustments to Newtownards bus services on Friday, March 21,” a spokesperson said.
“We are working hard to minimise overall impact on our customers.
“We encourage passengers to plan ahead and check for updates on our social media channels and our website at www.translink.co.uk.
“We apologise to our passengers for any inconvenience caused.”

Newtownards, Northern Ireland – During a recent visit to the Lakeland Dairies complex in Newtownards, Secretary of State Hilary Benn was urged to reconsider proposed inheritance tax changes that farming leaders say could have damaging consequences for rural communities—particularly in Northern Ireland.
Executives at Lakeland Dairies, a major cross-border agricultural co-op based in County Cavan, voiced their deep concerns during Mr Benn’s tour of the site, which is part of a wider operation spanning 16 counties across Ireland and supporting 3,200 farm families. The co-op is a major exporter, trading in over 80 international markets, and plays a pivotal role in both the Northern and Southern rural economies.
Farmers are warning that the proposed inheritance tax reforms could disrupt the traditional transfer of land and farms across generations—particularly in Northern Ireland, where smaller farms are the norm and often remain within families for decades.
“A mother or father transfers the farm to their son or daughter to build upon their successes,” said Keith Agnew, Vice-Chairman of Lakeland Dairies.“The current inheritance tax system has the potential to seriously damage the family farm model and the generational renewal essential to keeping our world-class sector alive.”
Mr Agnew said that Lakeland’s message to the Secretary of State was clear: reforms must support, not undermine, the long-term sustainability of farming in Northern Ireland and across the island.
Beyond tax, the delegation raised urgent concerns about post-Brexit trade, with specific focus on the Windsor Framework and the need for a new Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) agreement between the UK and EU.
The dairy industry relies heavily on frictionless cross-border movement of goods, and officials fear that any disruption could have a severe knock-on effect for producers and consumers alike.
“Our economies—north and south—are deeply intertwined, especially in agriculture. A clear SPS agreement is vital to maintain that connection,” added Mr Agnew.
Popular store owner announced retirement after 50 years.
AFTER 50 years of serving Newtownards, businessman Alan Espey has announced his retirement.
With a date still to be set for early next year, Mr Espey has confirmed he will be retiring from his High Street department store in Newtownards.
The 73 year-old, is preparing to say his farewells to the store known as the Alan Espey Department Store in the New Year and is hopeful that the next proprietor will continue to sell fashion wear.
Over the years, Mr Espey has sold everything from formal wear and high street fashion, to school uniforms, luxurious home living products and women’s underwear.
Mr Espey’s daughter Jillian runs a second shop bearing his name, Alan Espey Interiors, which will remain open, with Mr Espey helping out from time-to-time in his retirement.
Speaking about his time in Newtownards, Mr Espey recalled opening the doors to the store around 50 years ago, at just 22 years-old, with 25 members of staff.
He said: “I had family in the business. I had an uncle who ran that shop as a clothing shop, which would have been called Houston Brothers at that stage.
“He retired and had the shop let out as a food shop and then we took over and changed it back to fashions.”
With experience in the fashion industry already under his belt, Mr Espey felt that it was the type of business he wanted to carry on with.
Originally from Dungannon, Mr Espey worked in the industry in both Belfast and Banbridge before opening his own store and was persuaded to get into the industry by a relative.
“I was working in Belfast when my uncle suggested I go into this line of business and so I thought I’d give it a try,” Mr Espey continued, adding that he moved to Newtownards after marrying his wife Joan.
“Newtownards is a good country shopping town and is one that has stood the test of time with a lot of private shops. The private shops can adjust easily to suit the needs of the people.”
Asked what he loved about his job, Mr Espey simply said: “The fact is it’s not really work when you enjoy it.”
He added: “I enjoy meeting people. I have had three generations of staff work for me. We would take on school-leavers and it’s quite common for them to come back in with their own children to the shop saying ‘this is where I used to work’ which is always good.”
While Mr Espey said that he is retiring, he will be helping out at the interior shop with his daughter, saying he would be ‘taking life a little bit easier’ now.
“Jillian runs that shop so I’ll just be giving her a hand when she needs it and help out at holiday times and busy times,” he said, joking that he was used to waking up early in the morning for work.
“If it’s a nice day I’ll probably find something to do at home but if it’s a wet day I’ll appreciate the work to get out and do something.”
Speaking to all those who have entered his store in the last 50 years, Mr Espey said: “I would like to thank the customers for giving us their support and especially the good staff we have had. We have had excellent and very loyal staff and some of our customers, three generations on, still shop in our shop.
“As I’ve said, it’s not work if you enjoy it. I have a relaxed way of life. What you don’t get done today, you’ll get done tomorrow.”

Mr Dorrian died in hospital after he was found unconscious with head injuries at a property in the West Street area of the Co Down town in the early hours of Boxing Day
were handcuffed and stood throughout the hearing as they appeared together in the dock at Downpatrick Magistrates’ Court on Monday
each spoke to confirm their personal details and that they understood the charge they face
A Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) detective sergeant told the court that police could connect the defendants to the offence
A footprint was found on Mr Dorrian’s head
The detective sergeant said an emergency pull cord had been activated in the apartment after Mr Dorrian was attacked
This triggered an audio recording that is about 50 minutes long
some of which was clear and other parts are hard to make out
Current indications exclude the footwear worn by Kerr as those which made the mark on Mr Dorrian’s head but there was “a lot of CCTV” that links him to the scene
He added: “We have a photograph of the deceased with injuries taken at a time when we believe both of the accused were in the premises
“That photograph was taken whilst (the accused) were both there
approximately one hour before the cord was pulled
so we believe the deceased had been lying there for some time and had been in an injured state
disputed the suggestion that a connection could be made between the accused and the offence saying there were “no independent witnesses” to what happened
No application for bail was made for the defendants by their lawyers
said he had no questions for the PSNI officer at this stage
Deputy District Judge Paul Copeland ordered both defendants to next appear in custody via videolink at Newtownards Magistrates’ Courts on January 22
On Saturday the PSNI said that a 58-year-old woman who had also been arrested in relation to Mr Dorrian’s death had been released unconditionally

Detectives are appealing for information following an arson attack at a vacant property in the Weaver's Grange area of Newtownards in the early hours of this morning
Police conducting a checkpoint at Weavers Grange in Newtownards last year
Christopher LeebodySun 17 Nov 2024 at 12:12Police are investigating a possible link to an “ongoing loyalist feud” in Newtownards following an arson attack overnight
The PSNI said the vacant property in the Weaver’s Grange area was targeted after midnight and said an “accelerant” was poured over the door and through the letterbox
They branded it as a “reckless” attack and said the fire could have had “serious consequences” for nearby properties
Images captured from the scene in the town the morning after showed the house completely gutted as a result of the fire and smoke damage
PSNI Detective Inspector Ryan said: “Just after 12.40am
we received a report that our colleagues at Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service were at the scene of a fire
“Officers attended and noted that the fire had caused extensive damage to the front door and smoke damage throughout the house
"The Fire Service confirmed that this had been started deliberately when an accelerant had been poured over the door and through the letterbox
Detective Inspector Ryan added: “This was a completely reckless attack which could have had serious consequences for those in the neighbouring property
our Fire Service colleagues were able to extinguish the blaze before it spread to them
“We are following a number of lines of enquiry
including a possible link to an ongoing loyalist feud in the area
"I would appeal to anyone who may have seen anyone suspicious in the area at the time of the fire or to anyone who may have dash-cam or CCTV footage that could assist with enquiries
to contact detectives on 101 quoting reference 40 of 17/11/24."
the Weaver’s Grange estate was at the centre of a loyalist paramilitary feud sparked in March when the South East Antrim UDA said they had expelled members living in the town
The move left those members without the support of the paramilitary group
but the deposed loyalists refused to leave
saying they would be operating as the Real UFF
The gang had clashed with a rival UDA faction and homes and businesses were attacked
Around 30 families fled the area during the feuding
with an almost constant police presence for weeks on end
In April around 50 people took South East Antrim UDA murals down from walls in the estate
A number of people have been charged in connection with the gathering
while local women also organised street protests demanding those involved in criminality leave the area
Watch: Ards ‘dive-bombing’ pigeons win victory over NI council as plan to trap birds and unleash falcons falls flat
Pigeons have won a victory against a local council in a battle for occupancy in a Co Down town after a £25k plan to trap birds and unleash falcons failed to take off
A move by Ards and North Down Borough Council to reduce the pigeon population in Conway Square
has come to nothing after elected representatives agreed not to take any further action at a recent committee meeting
It followed an update by council officers who admitted that efforts to clear the popular area had only resulted in more pigeons taking up residence amid complaints that hundreds of birds were “dive-bombing” visitors and causing a mess
Councillors on the Community and Wellbeing Committee were given the option of taking the battle against the unwanted winged visitors to the next level by introducing trapping and falcons at a further cost of £25,000
no elected members in the chamber were prepared to countenance this line of action
It means the original motion to tackle the pigeon problem
which was passed by members in November 2022
DUP Alderman Stephen McIlveen tabled the original motion and at the time he said the proposal aimed to “humanely” reduce the amount of pigeons harassing people relaxing in the town’s main square
“The legacy Ards Council invested £5.5m in a public realm scheme in Newtownards — the bulk of that money was spent transforming Conway Square as the heart of the town,” he previously told the committee
"One of the aims was to make the town more attractive to local residents and visitors and encourage a family-friendly evening economy
a plaza feel was envisaged to encourage cafe seating areas in the square
but it is certainly an increasing one — pigeons
“This is an issue that has been raised with me time and time again by constituents — huge numbers of pigeons roosting around the square
swooping down and upsetting people walking around and sitting at the square
There are pigeon faeces everywhere lying thick on the ground beside cafes
“It does not make for a healthy or inviting environment
There are a range of diseases that can be caught from pigeon droppings
these are generally fungal infections that attack the lungs
and come from inhaling dust from droppings
Strangford MP Jim Shannon previously branded a swarm of pigeons as a health menace and complained that the birds were bombarding the town centre with droppings in addition to “dive-bombing” visitors
He said residents wanting to use public benches were forced to clean them as he urged Ards and North Down Borough Council to take action to tackle the “plague” of 200-plus birds
A recent council report on the issue noted that complaints are occasionally received by the Environmental Health Protection and Development Service from residents and several business owners asking the authority to try and find a solution to the problems posed by feral pigeons
"Interventions have been made in the past which successfully reduced bird numbers; however
the pigeon population has inevitably risen again,” it said
“Tackling the challenging current issue of pigeon numbers has required the input of several council departments
with work ongoing by the head of Regulatory Services to introduce a byelaw to address bird feeding in Conway Square
“The Environmental Health Protection and Development Service has made recommendations for bird-proofing improvements at Newtownards Arts Centre and is carrying out surveillance of bird movements to identify roost sites and put control measures in place
This alone has not been successful in reducing the number of birds and in fact
an increase in the bird population has been observed over recent months.”
The report highlighted several strategies suggested by experts after the council sought specialist advice including a combination of trapping and destroying the birds along using falcons to deter pigeon activity in the square
“A request for funding has been made to the council’s Budgetary Panel to invest £25K in pigeon reduction measures in Conway Square
This was subsequently approved by the council at the 29 January 2025 meeting,” it continued
“Due to the sensitive nature of pigeon control
the Environmental Health Protection and Development Service are seeking approval from the council to commence a procurement process to appoint a private pest contractor to carry out pigeon control during 2025/26 using the methods outlined above
rather than continue to try to tackle the issue in house.”
When officers asked councillors to approve a procurement process to include trapping and destruction of birds and the use of birds of prey as a deterrent

It’s one of over 20 meticulously crafted statues which have been installed on benches across the UK as part of a Paddington Visits trail ahead of Paddington in Peru hitting cinemas next Friday
Watch: Paddington bear visits Newtownards on special Paddington Visits tour
His arrival in Conway Square generated much excitement on October 11 with many locals posing for pics alongside the figurine of the fan favourite
the store manager of Del Piero’s Urban which is located just a few yards away

“At around 10pm she noticed Paddington lying on the grass bank,” one worker told the Belfast Telegraph
“She tried to stick him back on his bench but the bolts we're missing so she brought him in for the night
“He was handed over to the council this morning and returned to his seat
staff did notice an anomaly after waving off the special guest
"On further inspection of the café it was discovered that the marmalade was missing,” the employee joked
The business has shared photos of its famous customer on its Facebook page and highlighted a tag on his coat which reads “please look after this bear
“Paddington seemed to be having a great time in Newtownards and then we found him lying in the square,” the caption said
who plays Mr Brown in the new film Paddington in Peru

Ards and North Down Mayor Alistair Cathcart was one of the first to join Paddington for a marmalade sandwich with many parents taking their kids to the location in recent weeks
Many social media users have expressed anger and disgust online
"I would like to catch the people who took Paddington off his seat,” one person commented
this is why we can’t have nice things” alongside an angry face emoji while a third person asked “why are we surprised?”
Others expressed gratitude to the business for keeping Paddington safe as some speculated it was the smell of “your gorgeous chicken and bacon garlic junk fries” that lured him inside
“You'd better go buy a jar of marmalade if he's staying there,” one commentator advised
“Why couldn't they just leave the poor bear alone.”

The traffic is usually the only problem around here
A neighbour who lived close to the raided home said they didn’t know much about the person who was arrested
I don’t even know if he had family or anything
It’s very quiet around here you wouldn’t normally get anything like that

Councillor McDowell said: “I think it’s a terrible tragedy to happen
“I don’t know much of the details but I would appeal for anyone with information to come forward to the police.” A spokesperson for the PSNI said: “Our investigation is at a very early stage and we are working to establish the full circumstances around this deplorable incident
“Cordons remain in place and local residents will see a visible police presence in the area.”
The PSNI spokesperson continued: “Of course
it’s particularly shocking that this should happen at Christmas and we know that the thoughts of our community will be with this man’s family and friends today
