Perhaps some Americans may think that this lower overall life-expectancy doesn't really apply to them if they're middle- or upper-class
wealth inequality and health disparities are huge problems in the US
Those with more money simply have better access to health care and better health outcomes
with lifespans on par with their peers in high-income countries
It is true that money buys you a longer life in the US. In fact, the link between wealth and mortality may be stronger in the US than in any other high-income country. But, if you think American wealth will put life expectancy in league with Switzerland, you're dead wrong, according to a study in the latest issue of the New England Journal of Medicine
found that the wealthiest Americans lived shorter lives than the wealthiest Europeans
wealthy Northern and Western Europeans had death rates 35 percent lower than the wealthiest Americans
whose lifespans were more like the poorest in Northern and Western Europe—which includes countries such as France
"The findings are a stark reminder that even the wealthiest Americans are not shielded from the systemic issues in the US contributing to lower life expectancy
such as economic inequality or risk factors like stress
diet or environmental hazards," lead study author Irene Papanicolas
The study looked at health and wealth data of more than 73,000 adults across the US and Europe who were 50 to 85 years old in 2010
nearly 27,000 from Northern and Western Europe
participants were divided into wealth quartiles
with the first being the poorest and the fourth being the richest
The researchers then followed participants until 2022
The US had the largest gap in survival between the poorest and wealthiest quartiles compared to European countries
America's poorest quartile also had the lowest survival rate of all groups
including the poorest quartiles in all three European regions
While less access to health care and weaker social structures can explain the gap between the wealthy and poor in the US
it doesn't explain the differences between the wealthy in the US and the wealthy in Europe
There may be other systemic factors at play that make Americans uniquely short-lived
we need to better understand the underlying factors that contribute to these differences—particularly amongst similar socioeconomic groups—and why they translate to different health outcomes across nations," Papanicolas said
We have your first look of the poster of the highly anticipated Sitaare Zameen Par
is based on the Spanish movie Campeones (2018) and will follow the journey of an unwilling coach and a championship team of basketball players with intellectual disabilities
all the team players are played by specially abled actors — ten promising new talents including Aroush Datta
“It contains 10 actors who have done such wonderful work that maybe I will never be able to do in my life
I really hope people like it,” Aamir revealed
Sitaare Zameen Par is within the same world and themes of Aamir’s earlier brilliant Taare Zameen Par but with a new story
“It [Sitaare Zameen Par] is not a sequel in the sense that the characters do not continue from the previous one
it is a fresh set of characters with completely fresh situations and plot
it is 10 people with challenges who help me… the supposedly normal person
but the difference is that unlike Taare Zameen Par
Sitaare Zameen Par will leave you in laughter
” Aamir Khan explained in an earlier interview
“I’m very excited because Sitaare Zameen Par is on the same theme
which is also a favorite theme of mine — of humanity
“It’s a family entertainer; it’s a humorous film
This was a story that taught us so much; it made us realize—‘Oh
this is happening with our children; this is happening with us.’ I hope you’ll feel these things ten times more in this film.”
The par-3 scoring average on The PGA Tour is often around 3
with the tour average through the 2025 Valero Texas Open registering at 3.07
Collin Morikawa has the best par-3 scoring average
while Ryan Palmer currently holds the wooden spoon in 183rd place with an average of 3.37
What are your expectations when teeing it up on a par-3 hole
Amateur golfers can make or break their round based on par-3 scoring
but how well does the average player navigate these tricky tests
As I head to the first of the four tricky par-3 holes at my home course
I know that I am about to reach a pivotal point in my round
My performance on these short holes can often make or break my round
and according to the data it appears I am not alone
Understanding how to play par-3s with a clear and consistent strategy is obviously key
but how well does the average amateur golfer perform
Well, using Shot Scope data
I am now able to share the latest 2025 insights that helps us answer this question - so that you can compare yourself against the rest..
Before we get started, I am aware that the answer to this question will depend on a number of factors, including the course you are playing, your handicap index and the weather conditions on the day
we are looking at the average amateur golfer in each handicap index range playing the average par-3 hole (which is also broken down into distance brackets)
By chunking the data into three categories (hit green success
the Shot Scope data is able to give you a great insight into how you compare against your peers

Comment below with your own success stories or abysmal accounts from your par-3 adventures..
Par-3 Hit Green Success Percentage Based On Distance And Handicap IndexHandicap
As you can see in the table below, the success rate of amateur golfers hitting the green in regulation on par-3s varies based on handicap index and the distance of the hole
The average amateur golfer hits the green 40% of the time from 10-150 yards
27% of the time from 150-200 yards and just 14% of the time from 200+ yards
players of all abilities tend to hit the green less than half of the time on par-3 holes
The difference between the top and the bottom of the handicap index range is also quite stark
the disparity between the ranges tightens up a little - highlighting the fine margins between being a scratch golfer and being a low-handicapper
Par-3 Proximity By Distance And Handicap IndexHandicap
You might think that you should be stuffing your tee shot on par-3 holes to within a few feet for birdie
but the data might just provide with a welcome dose of reality that could help to manage expectations and improve your mood
The average amateur golfer has an average proximity of 51 feet from 100-150 yards
79 feet from 150-200 yards and 120 feet from 200+ yards
so cut yourself a little slack if you leave a long putt or a chip shot around the green
Even a scratch golfer has an average proximity of 31 feet from 100-150 yards
43 feet from 150-200 yards and 56 feet from 200+ yards
With plenty of par-3 holes protecting themselves with water hazards and a variety of other guarding forces - you can understand why the average amateur golfer loses a few golf balls per round to these tricky tests
With players towards the bottom end of the handicap index ranges tending to get a shot on some of the par-3 holes
it might even be worth finding the safe miss and factoring that into your strategy
A four might end up being a great result here
we mean the amount of shots taken to get the ball from the tee to the hole
You might expect this to be around par (3) for most golfers
but the data suggests that isn't really the case
The average amateur golfer takes 3.5 shots to get the ball in the hole from 100-150 yards
3.75 shots from 150-200 yards and 4.28 shots from 200+ yards
A 25-handicapper actually averages a double-bogey on the longest par-3 holes
and anyone above a 10-handicap is struggling to avoid a bogey on the card
When you consider that a scratch golfer averages 3.27 shots to complete par-3s
maybe it's time for a mindset refresh instead of throwing your putter in the lake after making a four

There are many great viewing spots at Augusta
Past champions and a host of the current field will tee it up around the famous par 3 course on Wednesday
with the action underway at midday local time
and Nick Faldo will dust off their clubs to compete against Rory McIlroy
Famously, no player has ever won the Par 3 Contest and gone on to win the Green Jacket. Could that change in 2025? And is ‘the curse’ really a thing?
holing out from the final tee in the 2018 contest as one of his favorite Masters memories – and the Golden Bear has more than his fair share to choose from having won here a record six times
The 17-time Major champion won’t be playing in 2025 but will take his place on the 1st tee on Thursday morning to perform Honorary Starter duties alongside Player and Watson. Nicklaus was also in attendance at Scottie Scheffler’s Champions Dinner on Tuesday evening
Rickie Fowler won last year’s competition on five-under par
Augusta’s nine-hole par-3 course is just 1,090 yards in total with holes ranging from 90 yards to 155 yards
The course underwent a major renovation before the 2023 Masters week
with reroutings of the first five holes along with a reshaping of DeSoto Springs Pond

The Masters Par 3 Contest first took place in 1960
A traditional precursor to the main event since 1960
the Masters Par 3 Contest was once a genuinely competitive tournament in which invitees fine-tuned their short games ahead of the real thing
it has since become more of a light-hearted family affair
with players showing off their jumpsuit-clad partners and offspring to the soundtrack of oohs and aahs from the patrons
Designed by architect George Cobb and Augusta National co-founder Clifford Roberts and open for play in 1958
par-27 layout measures 1,090 yards and weaves its way around DeSoto Springs Pond and Ike’s Pond in the north-west corner of the property
There have been a number of changes to the Par 3 Course over the years
the current 8th and 9th holes were added over Ike’s Pond
which replaced the original 1st and 2nd holes
the first five holes were all rerouted to allow more holes to be adjacent to the DeSoto Springs Pond
while the dam and pond were reshaped and restored which increased viewing options and capacity for patrons
Art Wall Jr (1965) and Gay Brewer (1973) shared the Par 3 Course record of 20 for many years
until Jimmy Walker (2016) carded an 8-under 19
Walker – who went on to win his sole major title at the PGA Championship later that year – is the only player to break 20 on the Augusta National Par 3 Course
The highest score to win the Par 3 Contest is 24
and has been achieved by three players: Tsuneyuki Nakajima (1988)
Rocco Mediate (1991) and Sandy Lyle (1998)
The reason why those players who are genuine contenders to win the Masters allow their family and friends to hit shots for them is because they don’t want to actually win the Par 3 Contest
Because of the so-called curse – which is actually just the fact that no player has ever won the Par 3 Contest and the Masters Tournament in the same year
including multiple Masters champions Sam Snead
Vijay Singh is the only player to have won the Par 3 Contest before winning the Masters Tournament
though Crenshaw’s title did fall between his two Green Jackets
Raymond Floyd (1990) and Chip Beck (1993) won the Par 3 Contest before going on to finish 2nd in the Masters Tournament
six winners have gone on to record top-five finishes
In total, more than 100 holes-in-one have been made during the Masters Par 3 Contest. (You can see the full list here.)
The record number of aces in a single year was nine in 2016
while Gary Player holds the record for the most holes-in-one by a single player with four (1983
made him the oldest player to sink a hole-in-one in the competition
while 19-year-old amateur Devon Bling (2019) was the youngest
Matt Wallace (2019) and Tom Hoge (2023) all had a hole-in-one on their way to winning
with only four in the tournament’s history
Largest winning margin: 3 shots – Art Wall Jr (1965); Jimmy Walker (2016)
Most Par 3 Contest wins: 3 – Padraig Harrington (2003
Back-to-back winners: 2 – Sandy Lyle (1997
Amateur winners: 3 – Deane Beman (1961); Labron Harris Jr (1964); Jay Haas (1976)
Oldest first-time champion: 51 – Mike Weir (2022)
Oldest competitor: 91 – Paul Runyan (2000)
Oldest to finish under par: 82 – Gary Player (2018)
Debutant winners: 12 – Sam Snead (1960); Terry Dill (1966); Bob Lunn (1969); Steve Melnyk (1972); Jay Haas (1976); Rocco Media (1991); Vijay Singh (1994); Joe Durant (1999); Ben Crane (2006); Ted Potter Jr (2013); Matt Wallace (2019); Mackenzie Hughes (2022)
The Masters Par 3 Contest title was shared in 2003
which was also the reason for the event being cancelled entirely in 2017
It was also postponed in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid pandemic
The 2025 Masters Par 3 Contest will be held on April 9
with coverage beginning at 12.00pm on ESPN and ESPN+

tying the record for 72-hole score on the PGA Tour and breaking the record for score in relation to par on a par-71 course
Scheffler had an 8-foot birdie putt attempt at the par-4 18th hole for the Tour scoring record but made a rare miss on a day when he made eight birdies and an eagle
Scheffler defeated Erik van Rooyen (63) by eight shots
Sam Stevens (64) was third at 20-under and another Dallas resident

The previous low score on a par-71 course was Dustin Johnson's 30-under 254 in the 2020 Northern Trust
Scheffler was 32-under through 16 holes until a bogey at the par-4 17th hole
when he came up short of the green on his tee shot and watched in dismay as his chip failed to reach the pin
where he had two birdies and an eagle for the week
Scheffler pounded his tee shot 303 yards into the fairway
then launched a 4-iron from 251 yards out that landed in a right-front bunker
He got the ball out over a high lip to give himself a chance
What did Scottie Scheffler earn for the victory?Scheffler earned $1,782,000 from a total purse of $9.9 million
and 500 FedEx Cup points for his 14th PGA Tour victory and his first since winning the Tour Championship on Sept

the PGA Tour's Signature event next week at the Philadelphia Cricket Club
It was Scheffler's week from the first round
where he blistered Craig Ranch and the field with a 10-under 61
He didn't make a bogey until the third hole of the third round (ending a streak of 40 bogey-free holes in a row)
He bogeyed the third hole again on Sunday but beginning with a birdie at the par-3 fourth
he played the rest of his first nine at 6-under
capped by an eagle at the ninth on a putt of nearly 21 feet

Spaun in a playoff to claim The Masters Par 3 title
with plenty of memories created along the way at Augusta National on Wednesday
Before the main event gets underway on Thursday
there was the small matter of The Masters' Par 3 Contest
A Wednesday tradition that has been played since 1960, it serves as a way for players to relax before The Masters begins and
Results-wise, it was Nico Echavarria and J.J
Spaun who finished the day at five-under-par
with both men taking just 22 shots around the par 3 layout
the duo made pars at the first time of asking
before Echavarria birdied the second time around to secure the victory and the crystal
the Colombian will be hoping to break The Masters curse
with the winner of the Par 3 contest yet to go on to win The Masters over the following four days
Throughout its history, we have seen over 110 aces at Augusta National's par 3 course and, on Wednesday, Keegan Bradley
Tom Hoge and Brooks Koepka added their name to the honors board
The first to-do-so was US Ryder Cup captain Bradley
who made the hole-in-one at the 138-yard sixth hole
the Major winner celebrated with his wife and kids who were present on the tee box
A post shared by The Masters (@themasters)
After Bradley's success, Hoge
then aced the fourth hole for his second hole-in-one in the contest's history
Koepka then replicated his fellow countryman
with the five-time Major winner also holing his tee shot at the sixth hole
with his approach landing past the flag and spinning back in for the one
It wasn't just the professionals who were showing off at Augusta National
with one of the highlights coming from Rory McIlroy's daughter
downhill birdie putt which caused mass celebration from her dad and Shane Lowry
also holed an impressive putt from the front edge of the green

Another memorable moment came in Aaron Rai's group where
his partner showed off her skills as she found the green
A professional golfer on the Ladies European Tour

Aamir Khan has unveiled the first look of his upcoming project, Sitaare Zameen Par, and it has already sparked discussion. The film immediately evokes memories of Taare Zameen Par
The design language is unmistakably familiar — from the font to the layout — offering a direct nod to the earlier film that left a lasting impression on audiences
While the poster mirrors the style of its predecessor, the tone of the film appears to veer in a completely different direction. Aamir has spoken in previous interviews about wanting Sitaare Zameen Par to be more playful in nature. Unlike the emotional depth and quiet intensity of Taare Zameen Par
at least if the actor’s words are anything to go by
The central plot is said to revolve around a group of teenagers who have distinct challenges
possibly echoing the theme of neurodiversity
but this time the backdrop seems to be the basketball court
The visual cues hint at a sports-based storyline
where the young characters are guided toward overcoming hurdles through team effort and self-discovery
especially those involving children or young adults
have a tendency to blend entertainment with purpose
and this one seems to follow that tradition
The poster features Aamir Khan in a close-up shot
The meaning behind the image is still unclear
Some have wondered if a more expressive or dynamic visual
perhaps showing interaction between Khan and the young characters
would have conveyed the story's tone more effectively
Adding to the poster's appeal is a brief snippet of upbeat music, possibly a track from the film. The cheering and hooting in the background signal a shift in energy from the original’s quiet melancholy. This shift is reinforced by the return of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, the music directors who were a crucial part of Taare Zameen Par's emotional resonance
Their work on that film — with tracks like "Maa" and "Jame Raho" — is still remembered fondly
Their involvement here suggests that music will once again play a significant role in driving the narrative and mood
Khan seems to be returning to a space that has historically resonated with his audience: a socially conscious story anchored in strong emotion and relatable characters
this marks the first time Khan has attached himself to a follow-up of sorts
the thematic and stylistic lineage between the two films is evident
indicates a level of conviction in the material
For someone known to be selective about his scripts
Khan’s involvement suggests the story offers something distinct while retaining a familiar emotional core
Scheduled for a release on June 20, 2025, Sitaare Zameen Par arrives with expectations already in place
It carries the weight of association with a film many consider a milestone in Indian cinema
but it also has the potential to chart its own path
Whether it manages to deliver on both fronts will become clear in time
it has reignited curiosity — and a renewed conversation about the kind of stories Khan chooses to tell

The winner Echavarria will look to break that drought in the coming days
Scroll below for the most memorable moments from Wednesday's Par 3 Contest at the 89th Masters Tournament:
5:37 p.m.: Nico Echavarria makes birdie on the second playoff hole to win the Par 3 Contest. The Colombian will receive some crystal in his Masters debut, before he turns his attention to the tournament proper.
5:30 p.m.: Nico Echavarria and J.J. Spaun each make par on the first playoff hole, No. 9. They'll replay the ninth for a second time, looking to determine the Par 3 Contest champion.
5:20 p.m.: Nico Echavarria and J.J. Spaun match the afternoon's low score at 5-under 22, which means there will be a playoff to determine the Par 3 Contest winner. The playoff will begin at the ninth hole.
4:40 p.m.: Brooks Koepka makes the day's third ace at the Par 3 Contest, holing his tee shot at the sixth hole. He joins Keegan Bradley and Tom Hoge in Wednesday's hole-in-one club.
Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy cedes the moment at the ninth hole to his daughter Poppy, and the younger McIlroy delivers with flair. Poppy drains a 30-foot putt from the back of the ninth green, electrifying the patrons who have gathered around. At the very least, it's some good karma for her dad, who eyes the career Grand Slam this week at Augusta National.
4:15 p.m.: Nico Echavarria and J.J. Spaun share the clubhouse lead at 5-under, as the final groups traverse the final few holes of the Par 3 Contest.
3:40 p.m.: Colombia's Nico Echavarria is the clubhouse leader at 5-under, followed by a contingent of players at 3-under: Matt McCarty, Mark O'Meara, Davis Riley and Mark O'Meara.
J.J. Spaun is 5-under as he reaches the ninth hole.
In a heartfelt moment, Rory McIlroy races his daughter Poppy down a fairway earlier on the course. Both are beaming as they end in a virtual tie.
Defending Masters champion Scottie Scheffler does not post a score, but it was an afternoon well spent alongside young son Bennett (who was born after last year's Masters).
2:50 p.m.: North Dakota native Tom Hoge brings the crowd to its feet with the day's second ace, coming at the 89-yard fourth hole. It's his second career hole-in-one at the Par 3 Contest (he previously made one at the eighth hole). Hoge spins back a wedge with perfect pace as it drips into the cup.
Hoge won the 2023 Par 3 Contest at 6-under. Safe to say he's a horse for this course.
2:20 p.m.: Max Homa joins the broadcast booth, quipping that his 30-foot putt with his son Cameron's junior putter was the highlight of his season so far, a moment of self-deprecation amidst his recent struggles inside the ropes. Homa and his wife Lacey are expecting their second child later this year.
Homa also interviews Akshay Bhatia, wondering if Bhatia weighs more or less than he did when he competed at the Drive, Chip and Putt at Augusta National in his youth.
1:58 p.m.: Captain America for the win. Keegan Bradley, with his two sons in tow, sends in the first ace of the event on the sixth hole. The Bradley family unleashes a celebration, jumping for joy as Bradley launches his two sons in the air.
1:45 p.m.: Davis Riley nearly records the day's first hole-in-one, but his tee shot on No. 6 settles within inches of the hole. He smiles in appreciation.
Moments before, Sir Nick Faldo flirted with a hole-in-one at No. 4, but the ball skirted the hole's edge while spinning back.
1:05 p.m.: Jordan Spieth is now carrying the bag as his son Sammy prances up the fairway. Neither of the group's three members (Spieth, Homa or Thomas) is eligible to post a score at this point. Neither minds too much.
12:50 p.m.: Max Homa makes a 30-footer with his son Cameron's junior putter. The vibes are high in the Homa-Thomas-Spieth grouping.
12:35 p.m.: Defending Masters champion Scottie Scheffler arrives at the first tee of the Par 3 Contest, holding his son Bennett. Scheffler's wife Meredith is caddying for the afternoon.
12:10 p.m.: The 2025 Masters Par 3 Contest is underway, with a grouping of Max Homa, Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth leading off the proceedings. Spieth lets his son Sammy hit his opening tee shot, thereby disqualifying Spieth from posting a score. Thomas carries his daughter Molly down the fairway in a wholesome scene. Homa putts out with his son Cameron's junior putter.

The traditional Par 3 Contest at The Masters takes place on the eve of the tournament and is one of the highlights of the week for many
Along with the Champions Dinner, the Green Jacket
the Par 3 Contest one of the treasured ingredients that combine to make The Masters such an iconic event
A fun-packed spin around a separate nine-hole par-3 course is now a way for players competing in the tournament to let the hair down with friends and family before the serious stuff begins
Previous champions can also compete and get that feeling back of what it's like to play in front of the patrons at Augusta National - and there's usually plenty of laughs and holes-in-one to be had
There have been 112 holes-in-one in the Par 3 Contest over the years, with the record being nine in 2016 and five aces scored last year as Rickie Fowler took the honors
but it's not a competition you want to win if you're dreaming of a Green Jacket as no Par 3 Contest champion has ever gone on to claim The Masters in the same year
That curse means players who fancy winning The Masters often get their kids or relatives to hit a shot during the competition
which officially disqualifies them from the event and thereby saves them from having to go against history
the nine-hole layout was designed by George Cobb and Cliff Roberts
It's an idyllic setting alongside two bodies of water - DeSoto Springs Pond and Ike's Pond - with crowds packed on the banks by the lakes to watch players hit over the water on numerous shots
The course record of an eight-under 19 is held by Jimmy Walker (2016) and with helpful pin placements promoting low scores there's always plenty of great shots for patrons to watch
It's a straight strokeplay competition but being just nine holes it means that there's been a playoff 21 times
while the tournament has finished in a tie three times
The traditional Masters warm-up that is the Par 3 Contest starts at noon ET at Augusta National
with coverage first being streamed live before TV coverage kicks in at 2pm

The Masters Par 3 Contest is a special affair
Players use it as an opportunity to fine-tune their short games ahead of the tournament proper
as well as showing off their jumpsuit-clad partners and offspring
But how many holes-in-one have there been – and who had them
The tournament within a tournament began in 1960
a year after Augusta National’s short course opened
there have only been 15 years where no hole-in-one has been made – the last of which was way back in 1991
That run extended at the 89th Masters (and 63rd Par 3 Contest) when Keegan Bradley dropped an ace at the 6th hole…
Cue the roars! Keegan Bradley makes a hole-in-one on No. 6. #themasters pic.twitter.com/5Ot4qIv3IG

spinning it back to the pin and getting his hands on some crystal

And there was even time for one more as Brooks Koepka also dropped one in at the 6th hole
The LIV star’s tee shot landed right by the pin and kicked towards the back of the green before rolling all the way back into the hole

Meanwhile, there have been a number of notable moments in the contest down the years. Who can forget when Tony Finau turned his ankle while celebrating? (That video’s here, but it’s not nice viewing.) And Jack Nicklaus counts his grandson, Gary Nicklaus Jr, having an ace during the event as one of his favorite Masters memories

‘Flashpoint’ dives into the temperature of GE2025 political rallies—the noise
the restless undercurrent you can’t put into words. Each photographer is given full creative freedom to interpret the rallies in their own distinct style and capture the raw energy that slips past speeches and slogans.
Justin Tan is a 24-year-old intern at RICE who uses photography to make sense of lived experiences
he captures the disorienting energy at a People’s Alliance for Reform rally held at NorthLight School
RICE does not endorse any political party in Singapore. Refer to our GE2025 content coverage policy for details.
The booming voice of someone on stage continued to usher curious onlookers in as I entered the PAR rally at Northlight School.
The crowd was somewhat sparse, with scattered patches of attendees.
Some were standing at a reserved distance with their arms folded. Some were sitting alone. A few energetic supporters were up by the barricade right in front of the stage.
The atmosphere: noncommittal. Yet also quite curious about what the party and its candidates had to say.
I wanted to capture the strange urgency with which the election season arrived—suddenly, we were all summoned to this random field on a Saturday night to exercise our democratic rights.
There was a restlessness in the air, visible in how people moved through the rally grounds.
This election season has unfolded in sharp bursts of intensity—candidates trading quick jabs and presenting competing visions of a better Singapore.
In a way, the flash of my camera echoes that intensity, cutting through the crowd, asserting my presence. I wanted to use this visual jolt to respond to the surreal crescendo of politics that erupts every few years.
Because it wasn’t packed, most rally attendees naturally spread out across the field, filling up the space. Some kids roamed and played on the field while their parents listened to the rally.
I thought it was interesting that a school field—an everyday play space for school kids—was being used to discuss very adult topics like politics and voting.
My favourite shot is the one with children playing in the field while two adults—presumably their parents—stood nearby, watching a candidate speak from a distance.
Within that single frame, multiple conversations seemed to unfold at once: a hand outstretched between two children in the midst of play; their parents quietly debating the merits of opposing candidates; and, in the background, a PAR speaker making their case.
Time blurred as candidate after candidate from the PAR took turns at the podium to rally the crowd, explaining where the incumbent had faltered and where they could step in.
I took this unfocused shot towards the end of the rally, when I felt the most overwhelmed by the non-stop campaign speeches.
Lim Tean, the PAR chief, was last to speak. When he finished, the rally ended without much fanfare. Most of the crowd quietly turned to leave, while a small group of supporters made their way to the front to greet the candidates.
As I watched people quietly shuffling out of the field, I wondered if PAR actually convinced anyone to shift their views, or shape how they’ll vote.
Compared to the crowds and energy at other rallies—whether from the incumbent or the opposition—this one felt notably sparse. Still, the fact that a decent number of people turned up suggests that Singaporeans are beginning to value having more political choices.

— Fred Couples scored one for the old guys on Thursday
Couples, 65, became the second-oldest man ever to shoot under par at the Masters
finishing with a 1-under 71 that left him walking off the 18th green to the adoration of the thousand or so assembled patrons — and sitting at that moment in the top 10 on the leaderboard
He is in a 16-way tie for 11th after Round 1 was complete
It was especially sweet for Couples, who had at least some worry he was nearing the end of his Masters career after shooting 80-76 and missing the cut a year ago
I can — as long as I don’t do crazy things
That’s not embarrassing myself at all,” Couples said
Tom Watson also shot under par at the Masters (in 2015)
but was about a month older than Couples is now
shooting a hole-out eagle on the par-4 14th from 191 yards out
His ball landed in the center of the green and rolled into the cup
and Couples raised a fist before kissing his 6 “rescue” hybrid
he rolled in a 48-footer from off the green
I don’t know if anyone saw it,” Couples said

Couples, who won the Masters in 1992 and is making his 40th appearance at Augusta National
said he cannot recall ever making an eagle on a par 4 here before today
Couples has made the cut once in his last six appearances
but said last year’s disappointing tournament was largely due to injuries and playing heavily during the PGA Tour Champions’ West Coast swing
Couples said he just practiced putting and chipping a couple of times in the week running up to arrival — “I didn’t even want to feel stiff.”

Police and probation services will be legally required to share with one another information that suggests offenders are risk to others
Coercive control is to be put on a par with other forms of domestic abuse in England and Wales with police and other enforcement agencies working together to tackle it
offenders serving a sentence of at least 12 months for controlling or coercive behaviour will be automatically managed under multi-agency public protection arrangements (Mappa)
the probation service and other agencies will be legally required to share with one another information about offenders that suggests they are a risk to others
such as their former partners or members of the public
The provision was part of the Victims and Prisoners Act, which was passed under the previous government last May. The statutory instrument to implement the change was signed into law by James Timpson
Coercive control is a pattern of behaviour intended to make the victim feel isolated and dependent on their abuser, and includes threats, intimidation, humiliation and assault. Charities say it is at the heart of domestic abuse.
Offenders who are managed under Mappa have a reoffending rate less than half of the national average, according to research by Anglia Ruskin University.
Timpson said: “Domestic abuse creates fear and isolation, and I will do everything in my power to tackle it and ensure women and girls feel safe in their homes. This new approach will put controlling or coercive behaviour on a par with physical violence and will help prevent these despicable crimes.”
Jess Phillips, the safeguarding minister, said that coercive or controlling behaviour was being “placed where it belongs – on a par with serious violent offending. This is an important step to recognise the harm caused by all forms of domestic abuse, ensure the most harmful offenders are managed in the right way, and ultimately keep victims safe.

supports their journey to justice and holds perpetrators to account – part of our mission under the ‘plan for change’ to halve violence against women and girls in a decade.”
The change applies to all coercive control offenders who have been sentenced to at least 12 months in prison
those convicted of controlling or coercive behaviour were only managed under Mappa on a discretionary basis
Coercive control was made a criminal offence in 2015
The number of coercive control offences recorded by police across England and Wales has risen in the last two years to more than 45,000 in 2024
according to figures from the Office for National Statistics
said: “Coercive control is a key tool used by perpetrators of domestic abuse
as it isolates survivors and makes them dependent on an abuser
“It is essential that specialist domestic abuse services
with expertise on abusive behaviours and the impacts on victims and survivors
are routinely included in the Mappa process if survivors are to be properly protected by this measure.”
As one of the missions he set out for his government, Keir Starmer vowed to halve violence against women and girls within a decade of Labour gaining power in 2024
This article was amended on 3 February 2025
an earlier version said that offenders sentenced from Monday to at least 12 months for controlling or coercive behaviour would be automatically managed under Mappa
The change applies from Monday to all offenders serving such a sentence for these offences
not just those sentenced from that point onwards

As the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) remains slower than expected
new ACEA publications underline the importance to strengthen and improve coordination of EV incentive programs at the European level
The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) recently published an updated overview of tax and incentive schemes for zero-emission cars and commercial vehicles
As EV market uptake continues to underperform
EV incentive schemes should be expanded and better coordinated at the European level.
the EV market share for cars stands at around 15% – that’s still far from where it was expected to be at 25% by the end of this year,” stated Sigrid de Vries
Director General of the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA)
“Europe’s electric vehicle market is still developing and hasn’t hit the crucial tipping point for mass adoption yet
Incentives are one key piece of the puzzle to help drive demand and get us to this common goal.”
and there is a growing range of models priced under €30,000 on the market (and many others in the pipeline)
upfront costs are a major barrier for many consumers
Battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) are more expensive than internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles today
largely due to higher battery manufacturing costs
purchase incentives continue to be a determining factor in a decision to purchase an electric model for cash-strapped consumers and are a prerequisite for creating a mass market.
The withdrawal of incentives for EV purchases in Germany at the end of 2023
leading to the collapse of the German BEV market
As state-funded schemes came to an abrupt end before the market had fully matured
EV purchases dropped dramatically by nearly a third
Despite the European market being far from where it needs to be
some purchase incentives schemes are gradually being discontinued with a growing number of eight member states now not offering any schemes for cars (up from six last year)
The availability of schemes for heavy-duty vehicles (HDV) such as trucks and buses is even more critical
with over a third of member states offering no incentives for acquisition
Only 12 countries offer infrastructure incentives despite the near complete absence of public HDV-suitable charging points.
While robust incentive schemes have been proven to work
it is not only a question of money on the table; it is about better coordination across European countries
Europe suffers from a fragmented framework
with schemes being decided at the national level
30 + widely differing schemes across the continent
with different funding levels and criteria
results in a multispeed EV uptake in Europe.
Belgium is often cited as a leader of the pack
known for its generous schemes and higher EV share in the powertrain mix – but this contrasts starkly with weaker schemes in several Central and East European member states where the share is noticeably acute
That’s why European automakers were disappointed that no new funding for demand incentives was yet earmarked in the Automotive Action Plan
despite Executive Vice-President Ribera previously announcing a much-anticipated pan-European subsidy scheme that could address imbalances and fragmentation
The European Commission should revisit this proposed initiative with haste as it would provide a much-needed impulse at an important moment in the transition.
As Europe navigates the crucial transition towards zero-emission transportation
more robust schemes and a cohesive approach to EV incentives are essential
The fragmented landscape of national schemes not only hinders the potential for broader adoption but will delay progress on reaching CO2 targets in a challenging environment for manufacturers.

Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry celebrate Poppy McIlroy's big poutt at the 2025 Masters Par 3 Contest
Every Wednesday of Masters week, players participate in the Masters Par 3 Contest at Augusta National’s Par 3 Course
But the pros aren’t the stars of the fun exhibition
Instead their children, wives and family members take center stage. The kids get dressed up in classic white Masters caddie suits
and tag along with their dads as they play the course
pros also sometimes let their family members
This year, Rory brought his four-year-old daughter, Poppy, along for the fun. And Poppy didn’t waste her moment in the spotlight. Instead, the toddler provided a highlight her dad will struggle to top for the rest of Masters week
McIlroy’s tee shot found an elevated part of the green
leaving his ball a good 25 feet or more from the hole
with only a steep downslope between his ball and the cup
Instead of taking on the challenging putt himself
Poppy didn’t seem overcome with the pressure
Cradling her dad’s putter awkwardly in her arms
she delicately tapped the ball for the extremely slick putt
At first it seemed like the ball would come to a stop on a ridge well short of the hole
But then it crested the high point and started rolling directly toward the cup
McIlroy’s playing partners Shane Lowry and Tommy Fleetwood took note and prepared for the celebration

it sent the patrons gathered around the green — along with Lowry and Fleetwood — into hysterics
Lowry and Fleetwood’s young daughters ran up to Poppy to congratulate her
But all the attention finally seemed to get to her
