improvements to a school building at Kirkstead Junior Academy in Pinxton after they unearthed a pair of historic shoes Likely left there by superstitious builders or the original property owner the shoes may date back as far as the 1820s the shoes could have been deposited as a form of good luck charm to ward off evil spirits much like an early form of insurance policy for the building Anne Ingle is Headteacher of the Pinxton Village Academies All three schools have undergone transformational improvements in recent years highly praised during their Ofsted inspections and all three sites have enjoyed recent school building improvements and investment It was during such building renovations earlier in the summer when the shoes were discovered by workers and children have been particularly inspired by them to discuss and enrich their local history studies It is a fantastic insight into the community and possible beliefs and superstitions of the people of Pinxton in times gone by.” Anne says staff and children have all had their own ideas about their age and origin “We estimate the shoes are probably around a size 5 or 6 in modern terms and we have discussed the idea of them belonging to a builder who worked on the building in 1820 “We intend to share our find with the local museum and historical society for further inspection and hopefully they may be able to give us more answers The children are keen to know as much about the find as possible!” shoes were routinely designed to be worn on either foot and still have metal lace holes and a variety of repairs and modifications They also appear to have some machine stitching although sewing machines were already in use by the time the building was erected and possibly once featured ‘irons’ such as might be seen on wooden soles or clogs Children at Kirkstead Junior School have used the rare find to inform and inspire learning about the history of their school and community said: “I think the boots are very interesting because you can see the stitching and the holes where laces went In some ways they are very different to modern shoes and they look like it would be hard to walk in them •  West The drawings were designed to reflect the pupils love of Pinxton and also mark the Queen's jubilee a former pupil at John King Infant Academy Their winning designs were chosen by Cllr Mark Hinman chair of the Pinxton Parish Council as they embodied the Pinxton community Presiding at the unveiling was Cllr Julian Siddle (Derbyshire County Councillor and Pinxton Parish Councillor) who said: “I think this has been a great project to get the community’s children involved They submitted artwork which celebrated the Queen’s Jubilee and also the community of Pinxton “Recently the Pinxton Village Hall was painted with a huge mural on its gable wall we installed three mosaics on the front elevation The three winning children’s entries now sit underneath these original mosaics and we hope they will be here for the community to enjoy for many years to come.” It came as a surprise because I don’t usually win things like this and I have done sticker mosaics before too except I think the Queens face is a bit better on the mosaic than the one I did on my drawing.” I did a crown with the number 70 to represent the number of years the Queen was on the throne I did the love hearts because of the love and respect people had for the Queen I hope our mosaics will last as long as the others.” headteacher of Pinxton Village Academies said: “This is a wonderful display of our children’s flair for art and we are delighted to see how beautiful the finished works are Coralie has done a magnificent job of interpreting the children’s work and we are so grateful to Pinxton Parish Council for giving our children this opportunity “I think that the chosen works show a real love for Pinxton the pride they feel for this wonderful community and its heritage I sincerely hope that the works will remain for many future generations of children and families to enjoy “Our winners are great ambassadors for the Pinxton Village Academies Get all the latest news, updates, things to do and more from Pinxton, murdered in 1967 Mickleover Reserves visited Pinxton for a friendly match and came away as 1-0 victors There was an early chance for Mickleover when a good build up with Mills and Ben Lewin led to Elijah Fatubarin shooting just wide Overall the first 10 minutes were fairly even before Mils put a great ball through to Matt Feurtado before Ricky Ravenhill picked it up and Lewin shot wide Mills was through again before Fatubarin earned a corner then Feurtado crossed before Fatubarin’s shot was saved Pinxton started to fight back and got a 14th minute break 15 mins in and Mickleover had a shot cleared off the line when Feurtado’s shot had beaten the keeper With wing backs Lewin and Tom Eccleshall both working hard on the overlaps and John McGrath Ravenhill and Lopes Massampo running midfield Lewin’s 17th minute cross was met by Ravenhill Three minutes later Eccleshall’s cross found Feurtado but his twist to turn and shoot didn’t work out Pinxton had another chance after 23 minutes but the shot failed to trouble Mickleover keeper Ollie Staines Mickleover had done all but score in the first half hour but Pinxton continued with random shots when the opportunity occurred McGrath was sent airborne after a heavy tackle but Pinxton started  to threaten a little more creating more chances with a shot just over the bar Feurtado had a good chance with half time approaching but wanted too much time on the ball and failed to get his shot in Pinxton had another shot high and wide and a nice ball through the middle from Pugh Another weak effort from a Pinxton striker brought the half to an end Mickleover had to replace Fatubarin with Keenan Barrett as the second half kicked off but it was Pinxton with the first shot of the half But sustained attacking from Mickleover soon followed as Feurtado was through and Mills shot was blocked then on 56 minutes Massampo and Keenan combined and were nearly through on goal McGrath put a tight cross right into the Pinxton area which the keeper had to tip over and then on the hour Feurtado came off and Ash Elliott took over Keenan’s pace had started to cause problems and when he was fouled on the edge of the box before a quick one two with Mills saw the shot well over Four minutes later Pinxton went close with a shot across the Mickleover goal then Keenan was on the move again but his long ball was just too long for Massampo Staines had to earn his stripes with a point blank save after 68 minutes with Pugh and Jacob Ferdinand looking solid in the Mickleover defence But the dead lock was finally broken after 74 minutes A big scramble in the Pinxton box resulted in the keeper chasing Elliott out of the area But it was still turned in with the keeper stranded Mills fired it goal wards but it hit the underside of the bar Mills then earned a break and was replaced by Kyran Ward after a cross from Eccleshall was well met Pinxton continued to fight and when Ravenhill lost the ball In the final 10 minutes McGrath had another good run down the right before being fouled while goal scorer Mills returned to replace Ravenhill It could have been a second for Mickleover when a McGrath free kick was met with an excellent header from Elliott Pinxton were down to 10 men however after one of their players received a second yellow card for renaming the referee In the closing minutes Ward went close with two attempts and Keenan tried his luck in the final minute with an interesting mix of youth and experience in the Mickleover side The founders of a specialist thermal spray and paint company in
