Leeds United were crowned champions of the Sky Bet Championship with a stunning dramatic final day victory over Plymouth Argyle at Home Park
The Whites needed to win on the South Coast owed to other results and with the scores level deep into stoppage time
a fantastic run and finish from Manor Solomon proved the difference
sparking wild scenes of celebration in Devon
Daniel Farke’s side had secured promotion to the Premier League having won five consecutive matches but the title was still to be decided on the final day
A first chance on goal came for United from a set-play
Sam Byram leapt highest and connected well with his header but Conor Hazard was well placed to save
Mustapha Bundu’s strike cannoned back off the post and against the defender
before heading into the back of the net to give the hosts the lead
A number of set-play opportunities gave the Whites opportunities to get back into the game
but again Hazard was on hand to deny any attempt on his goal
the hosts went into with the half-time advantage at Home Park
HALF TIME: Plymouth Argyle 1-0 Leeds United
Leeds knew they needed to start quickly with the title on the line and did just that
equalising just a few minutes after the restart
Clever play down the left saw Solomon cause problems before then drilling low across the box
finding Willy Gnonto at the back post to turn home at close range
Farke’s side kept pushing forward in search of a winner
Solomon was lively again and had a couple of close efforts
Patrick Bamford and Largie Ramazani were both introduced into the attack
The magical moment came deep into added on time
the attacker twisted one way and then another
before drilling an inch-perfect finish into the bottom corner
Defending heroically until the final whistle sounded
Solomon’s strike proved the difference to take Farke’s side to 100 points and
FULL TIME: Plymouth Argyle 1-2 Leeds United

If you're heading out to a pub garden to make the most of your Bank Holiday weekend
be warned - as one Plymouth pub has shared its zero-tolerance stance to drugs at its site
The Kings Arms, in Tamerton Foliot, took to Facebook ahead of the long weekend to warn its customers that when it comes to drugs: "One strike - and you're gone."
the pub wrote: "The Kings Arms has an Absolute Zero Tolerance on drugs
Let me be crystal clear: I will not tolerate any drug use or drug dealing in the pub or garden
"Some may think that because I haven’t said something directly to them
Let me assure you - that couldn’t be further from the truth
will soon realise exactly where I stand on this
"I’m not blind to what’s been going on
There have been reports of dealing in the garden
"Devon & Cornwall Police have agreed to send undercover officers
All CCTV is fully accessible to the police
and anyone suspected will have their face handed over without hesitation
"There are no “three strikes” in this pub
I honestly couldn’t give a monkeys what you get up to in your private homes
All I ask is that you be respectful to our wishes when you come to our house
We’re working hard to make sure it’s a safe
welcoming space for everyone - including families with children
If you’re the kind of brainless muppet who thinks this behaviour is acceptable
The pub added that it had broadcast its "robust" stance publicly
in the hopes that other pubs and venues in the area would follow suit
And they have garnered a great deal of support on their Facebook post
with a number of comments commending the pub for speaking out
One comment even came from Plymouth's oldest pub
I have always endorsed and will continue to endorse these sentiments
don't think for a second that you can now move your activities to the 7's
You will receive exactly the same attitude and response."

Miron Muslic joined Plymouth Argyle after leaving Belgian side Cercle Bruges in late 2024
Plymouth Argyle head coach Miron Muslic has refused to confirm whether he will stay on at the club next season
The 42-year-old Bosnian-born Austrian took over in January following Wayne Rooney's departure but was unable to stave off relegation from the Championship
Argyle ended the season second-from-bottom, three points from safety, after a late 2-1 loss to champions Leeds United at Home Park
The Pilgrims had a resurgence under Muslic as he guided Argyle to a famous FA Cup upset over Liverpool and five wins in their final 10 league matches
who won just once in the final 14 games of Rooney's tenure at the end of 2024
had left themselves just too much to do to secure their second-tier status

On Thursday, Muslic, who agreed a three-and-a-half year deal when he joined the club, said he wanted "answers" over the futures of a number of key players
He also called for clarity over who Argyle's new technical director will be as well as appointments to the recruitment department
"I'm empty - we are relegated for seven or eight days
believe me I'm empty," Muslic told BBC Sport
"I don't have the power right now to think about a potential future because that takes a lot of focus
a lot of concentration and a lot of energy
"I don't have this energy right now
I need to go back to my family to see them
to breathe and we have enough time to think about the future."

The thousands of Leeds United fans that invaded the south coast were in party mood but the players didn’t seem to get the memo in a lacklustre first half
Nothing clicked for Daniel Farke’s off-kilter attack, who didn’t work the goalkeeper nearly enough for the threatening positions they found themselves in, with Joel Piroe and Brenden Aaronson missing several good chances
Mustapha Bundu proved to be a problem and moments after hitting the post
he charged through the defence again to set up an unfortunate own-goal for Sam Byram
Leeds went in at the break behind and desperately needed to wake up in the second half and the response was immediate, with Willy Gnonto smashing in the leveller from close range
The Whites huffed and puffed as the clock ticked down
with Burnley taking the lead against Millwall to put them top of the Championship table
Just when it seemed like the title had slipped through their fingers
Manor Solomon popped up to find a sensational winner
Not given much to do but this was his shakiest display since coming into the side bar far
He was indecisive and ill-timed coming off his line
with one missed catch leading to a dangerous scramble in the box
Far from his best day in the office. Jayden Bogle was as threatening as usual with dangerous work down the right but was caught far up the field on several occasions
Taken to the cleaners by Bundu for the goal as he left in a lazy challenge and wasn’t as solid as usual at the back
and set up one great chance with a lovely lofted ball
Leeds’ best performer in the first half and that’s not even faint praise
He kept his composure when others didn’t to offer some classy defending against a physical side and looked to push forward out of the back to get the team going
In for the injured Junior Firpo and it continues to be blatantly obvious how much Leeds struggle without their first-choice left-back
Unlucky to score an own goal as the ball bounced off the post and in off him
Worked hard down the left and a threat at set pieces but to little effect
Good at winning the ball back but this was a regression on the ball after Monday’s great display. Ao Tanaka was sloppy in possession and conceded one dangerous chance after losing the ball
Decision-making was poor by playing some wrong passes and desperately shooting from outside the box when he shouldn’t have done
Displayed a lovely range of short and long passing at times but it was his one poor ball that was cut out to launch Plymouth’s counter for the opening goal
After letting a couple of chances pass him by in the first half
Gnonto showed great attacking instincts to get in the right place to blast the equaliser in
Thought he’d set up Piroe to score but was flagged for offside in a contentious decision
You’d be forgiven for thinking Aaronson thought the four Leeds players in the away end were actually playing the amount of times he skied the ball into the stands
It seems like most of Leeds’ chances fell to the American and his technique was generally awful
as he would never get the right power or direction on his efforts
One attempt to side-foot a volley was a particularly egregious example
Leeds’ biggest threat as he got the right-back dancing and delivered several threatening balls into the box that went begging until the goal
It was no surprise when he set up the equaliser with some excellent wing play and a teasing cross into the six-yard box
Solomon scored an incredible goal to secure the Championship
Fans will be desperate to see him signed now
Some nice link-up play but missed a golden chance to equalise when he skied the ball from close range
If you can’t rely on your striker to convert a gilt-edged chance when it matters most
it suggests another one will be needed in the top flight
Thought he’d put Leeds in front from close range and was unlucky to see his effort disallowed
Likely not the first name fans would have wanted to come on and offered little on the left and needlessly gave away a late corner

Argyle took the lead after 18 minutes with an own goal from Sam Byram
But with the game level heading into stoppage-time
Manor Solomon in the 91st minute scored a dramatic winner
clinching Championship glory for the already-promoted Whites
The defeat for Argyle officially confirmed their relegation from the Championship, in what has been a tough and hugely disappointing season.

Comments15:04Chris ErringtonMatch statsArgyle had six goal attempts from 22 per cent of the possession during the game. None of them were on target, although Mustapha Bundu did hit the post twice, with the ball then rebounding into the net off Sam Byram on one of those occasions.
Leeds had 25 goal attempts from 78 per cent of the possession, but only four were on target. It was 7-1 to Leeds on corners.
Comments15:03Katie TimmsLeeds edge Burnley to Championship title on goal difference Leeds pipped Burnley to the title, Coventry and Bristol City secured the final two play-off places while Luton and Plymouth Argyle were relegated on an eventful final day in the Championship.
United needed to match Burnley’s result to be crowned champions due to their superior goal difference and they eventually did just that following an afternoon of toil, beating Argyle 2-1 courtesy of a last-gasp strike from Manor Solomon.
Daniel Farke’s side equalised through Wilfried Gnonto’s third effort in as many games shortly after half-time, cancelling out Sam Byram’s own goal, before the late drama at Home Park.
After Mihailo Ivanovic’s early opener for play-off hopefuls Millwall at Turf Moor, Josh Brownhill took his goal tally for the season to 18 and Jaidon Anthony struck to give Burnley a 3-1 triumph and leave them second with 100 points.
Blackburn, Millwall and Middlesbrough were left disappointed in their hunt for a top-six spot.
Jack Rudoni’s brace took Frank Lampard’s Coventry to a 2-0 home win over Boro and Ross McCrorie scored twice as Bristol City fought back to secure a 2-2 draw against relegation-threatened Preston at Ashton Gate.
Blackburn were heading into the top six at the Robins’ expense when Yuki Ohashi gave Rovers the lead at Bramall Lane, but they were pegged back by Anel Ahmedhodzic’s equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Sheffield United.
Luton’s second successive relegation was confirmed after a 5-3 defeat at West Brom, with Tom Fellows, Callum Styles and Millenic Alli all scoring twice at the Hawthorns.
The Hatters therefore needed a big favour at Fratton Park, but Hull survived to hang on for a 1-1 draw at Portsmouth, after Christian Saydee equalised for the hosts in the 55th minute.
Derby and Stoke played out a goalless draw to retain their second-tier spots.
Sunderland will go into their play-off semi-final against Coventry on the back of five consecutive losses.
QPR, with assistant coaches Kevin Betsy and Xavi Calm in charge after Marti Cifuentes was placed on gardening leave, claimed a 1-0 victory at the Stadium of Light after Nicolas Madsen’s early finish.
Jack Wilshere won the battle with his former Arsenal team-mate Aaron Ramsey after Norwich beat Cardiff 4-2 at Carrow Road, with Marcelino Nunez scoring either side of Calum Chambers’ 16th-minute red card.
Ji-Sung Eom scored a stunner as Swansea, who recently appointed Alan Sheehan on a permanent basis and had Joe Allen playing his final game before retirement, drew 3-3 at home to Oxford, who equalised late on through Przemyslaw Placheta.
Josh Windass, in what could be his final appearance for Sheffield Wednesday, netted in a 1-1 draw at Watford.

Oxford took a big step towards safety as they beat Sheffield Wednesday 1-0, with protests against the Owls chairman, Dejphon Chansiri, continuing at Hillsborough. A number of Wednesday fans turned their back on the pitch and chanted for Chansiri to sell in the 10th minute in protest at his running of the club. Sam Long’s 79th-minute header was enough to secure the win and take Oxford six points clear of the relegation zone.
Third-placed Walsall's winless run extended to a ninth game as they lost 2-0 at Barrow and Doncaster moved a point behind the Saddlers as they drew 1-1 at home against fourth-placed AFC Wimbledon, a game in which both sides had a man sent off.
Grimsby, in sixth, were held 2-2 at Harrogate after conceding twice late on, and Colchester are outside the playoff places by a point having scored twice in the closing stages at Newport to triumph 2-0.
Carlisle boosted their survival hopes with a 2-0 win at Morecambe that saw the sides swap places in the relegation zone. They are six and seven points respectively adrift of 22nd-placed Accrington, who were 3-0 up at home against Tranmere only to draw 3-3, with Omari Patrick equalising with his second goal of the game in the 11th minute of added time at the end. Rovers are 21st, a point ahead of Stanley.
There were also home wins for Chesterfield over Fleetwood (3-0) and Gillingham over MK Dons (1-0) – their first victory under Gareth Ainsworth. PA Media
Thank you for your feedback.Rob Atkinson scored an unusual treble as he earned Portsmouth a dramatic 2-2 draw against their relegation rivals Derby at Fratton Park. The centre-back had cancelled out Jerry Yates’ opener before putting through his own goal in a manic five minutes of a crunch encounter. Pompey had seen Colby Bishop’s early penalty saved but secured a point when Atkinson found the net for the third time in stoppage time.
Stoke scrambled an 85th-minute own-goal winner to steer themselves away from the relegation dogfight and plunge Cardiff deeper into it. After a long throw into the home box caused panic in front of goal, the keeper Ethan Horvath got his foot to a shot but the ball ricocheted in off the defender Will Fish. Stoke moved five points clear of their hosts who are in the third relegation spot and remain a point adrift of safety.
Miron Muslic is hoping to end the season on a high at Plymouth Argyle
Plymouth Argyle head coach Miron Muslic says his side will "not roll out the red carpet" for title-chasing Leeds United on Saturday
Argyle are all-but relegated from the Championship and face a Leeds team who know they will lift the title if they can win at Home Park
but their superior goal difference means as long as they match the Clarets' result they will be crowned champions
Argyle need an almost impossible set of results if they are to stay up - they must beat Leeds and hope both Hull and Luton lose as well as requiring a 14-goal swing in goal difference
But Muslic says his side's recent good form against promotion-chasing outfits stands his team in good stead
"I think the top teams they just suit us
"I think we should have confidence for a reason - Norwich
Sheffield United - all the top teams that are far highly ranked than us
we managed not only to perform at a good level
we also managed in the end to grab the three points
"The desire of Leeds to come here to win the game
but we also have the desire to perform as strong as possible
"We will not roll out the red carpet here for Leeds United

xemailLeeds United travel to the south coast this weekend knowing victory over Plymouth Argyle will be enough to secure the Sky Bet Championship title
The Whites head into the final round of fixtures level with Burnley on 97 points but
owing to a scintillating goal difference of +64
a win at Home Park will see Daniel Farke’s side crowned as Champions
And in fine form the team goes into the season finale
having ran out winners of their previous two outings by an aggregate score of 10 goals to nil
on the afternoon that would secure promotion
hitting Stoke City for six with the league’s leading marksman Joël Piroe scoring his 16th
alongside a strike from Junior Firpo and header from Willy Gnonto
dismantling Play-Off chasing Bristol City 4-0 with goals from Ao Tanaka
and a well-taken brace from substitute Largie Ramazani
Plymouth aren’t mathematically relegated however would require a remarkable 14 goal swing over Luton Town to have any chance of survival
The Pilgrims have won their previous two encounters
against Coventry City and Preston North End
but a last-minute defeat away at Middlesbrough on Good Friday essentially left Miron Muslić’s side with too much ground to make up

A popular Plymouth clairvoyant who’s been “guiding” locals for years has left some "absolutely gobsmacked”
I decided to give her a visit after speaking with her on the phone in December 2024 - as she spookily seemed to pick up on a few things about me then
Sam Hatch set up The Psychic Shop in Devonport about 30 years ago
but she told me she’s been “reading people” for 40 years - and generations of Plymothians have visited her in that timeframe
I’d spoken to other people who were familiar with the clairvoyant - and even some sceptics said this woman’s predictions were spot on
I’ve always found fortune telling possibilities intriguing - of course
I realise there is no actual scientific proof in this spiritual practice of prediction
the age-old profession of clairvoyance goes back hundreds of years and many people still flock to a fortune teller with a good reputation even in this day and age
Google reviews of Sam’s predictions show that many customers are impressed
One recent reviewer said she was “absolutely gobsmacked”
adding that she “cannot recommend her enough”
Another reviewer wrote: "I have met Sam twice
both times everything she predicted happened
No other psychic has been that accurate."
When I walked into The Psychic Shop it felt very calming and although it’s situated on the busy Albert Road in Devonport
The shop itself is a treasure trove full to the brim with dream catchers
books and lots of other bits and pieces related to the spiritual world - and the premises has its own resident ghost
I sat beside a wishing well while waiting for my reading
all coins put into the wishing well are collected for animal charities
A notice by the well reads: “Be careful what you wish for
Wishes made in a psychic shop are sure to be heard” - of course I made a wish
Then I went into a separate room and met Sam for my reading
Sam explained the process and then I was asked to “call to the higher realms” in order for Sam to “make contact with the spirits and get the insight she needs” for my reading
I was to make notes on a pad of A4 paper as she spoke
she spoke slowly and thoroughly so it was easy to write it all down
I was given initials of certain people with connections to weddings and other life events she predicted
It’s all on a notepad so I can refer to this going forward
a few specific trips away to Spain and America were predicted - all noted so I’ll wait to see
but one of the most interesting things Sam told me was right at the end of my reading
She detailed that sometimes the answers you’re looking for may lie in the past - and not just your immediate past
Crystal healing is also offered along with spell and tarot reading sessions - where you can learn how to “open up psychically” yourself
Sam also provides readings to people across the globe over the phone
A historic steam locomotive and an iconic London Routemaster bus will be among the highlights at the Devon County Show in May, as the event celebrates 200 years of the modern railway in partnership with the South Devon Railway
and spent years supplying parts to other engines before being privately purchased in 1989
It returned to service in 2003 and now operates from Buckfastleigh
a 1964 London Routemaster double-decker bus will also be on display
Having served Londoners for four decades on routes including the 15

Following last weekend’s relegation back to Sky Bet League One after an exhilarating, and at times excruciating, two-year stay in English football’s second tier, we take a look at reasons to be upbeat about what lies ahead for Plymouth Argyle
That wonderful Saturday afternoon at Vale Park feels like an age ago
The city was prouder of its football club than it had been for nearly two decades
Steven Schumacher was firmly behind the wheel
and Plymouth Argyle were back where fans felt they belonged
two caretaker spells for the now-departed Director of Football Neil Dewsnip and club legend/current first team coach Kevin Nancekivell
and the highs and lows of Championship life have left their mark
there is optimism that this summer is when the Greens will finally secure long awaited investment
there’s always a fear of cost-cutting measures with staff
beginning with being debt free is set up in a way where that won’t be necessary
A significant investment with both eyes firmly fixed on the future and a multi-million pound training complex for the academy and women’s team being built
hopefully set for completion within the next 12 months
the club are moving forward at a rate of knots
This will allow the Pilgrims to apply for category two status within their academy
providing the youngsters a better chance of being able to make the step up through to the first team
Argyle has a head coach who has captured the imagination of the people within the city
He has an aura about him that commands respect
He understands the task that’s been set to him to make the city smile and stay proud of its football team
with comments made in the pre-match press conference on Thursday
the club will need to give assurances to the head coach to keep him in Devon
Ryan Hardie and hometown hero Adam Randell all under contract
there’s still an identity of the side that earned the promotion to the promised land of the Championship
They know what this club is capable of at this level
Those players will know just what it means to the city and the memories it will create for all involved
having that experience around the dressing room will be invaluable to the management
Whilst relegation is of course avoidable and disappointing
you wouldn’t be wrong to believe that Argyle are in a good place ahead of their return to the third tier and one thing is for sure
if the Greens get a good start the momentum this club can build up

Manor Solomon's late winner sparked wild celebrations
Manor Solomon's stoppage-time winner secured Leeds United the Championship title as they won 2-1 at Plymouth Argyle
With Burnley beating Millwall 3-1, Leeds take the title on goal difference having secured promotion back to the Premier League last month
Argyle took the lead when the impressive Mustapha Bundu's shot came back off the post and went in off Sam Byram - just moments after the Plymouth forward had clipped the Leeds upright
who topped the table going into the final day
were repeatedly frustrated by a dogged Plymouth side until early in the second half when Willy Gnonto fired in Solomon's cross
The visitors had a Joel Piroe goal ruled out for offside with 17 minutes to go as Daniel Farke's side hunted the winner they knew was required to secure the title
But just as it seemed they would have to settle for second place
Solomon cut in from the left and fired low into the bottom corner to send the travelling Leeds fans wild and set up a trophy lift celebration after the final whistle
Leeds started well as Joe Rodon and Brenden Aaronson saw efforts saved by Conor Hazard before they fell behind
Bundu had given Leeds a warning a minute before the goal as he beat three men before blasting an effort that grazed the outside of the post
When the resurgent Sierra Leone forward cut in from the left moments later
the net did bulge as his low effort came back off the far post and bounced in off a helpless Byram
Piroe almost equalised within a couple of minutes when he turned Jayden Bogle's shot over the bar from six yards as Leeds tried to restore parity quickly
Ao Tanaka and Willy Gnonto all had half-chances
but Leeds failed to create another really good opening before the interval
Piroe again fired over as the second half started like the first ended before Gnonto equalised from close range after Solomon had crossed low from the byline
Byram saw a glancing header go wide of the post midway through the second half while a Piroe effort was disallowed when Gnonto was adjudged to be offside as he received the ball before crossing it for his team-mate - a call which replays suggested was very marginal
As news of Burnley going ahead filtered through
Farke brought on Patrick Bamford and Largie Ramazani to try and get a title-winning goal
But it was Plymouth who almost snatched a winner when Ryan Hardie curled an 88th-minute effort wide from inside the box
while Callum Wright sent a tame low shot into the arms of Karl Darlow two minutes later as the hosts caught Leeds on the break
just as it seemed all hope of the title had gone
Solomon broke into the penalty area and fired low past Hazard - sending the packed away end into raptures
Willy Gnonto scored for the third successive game for Leeds United
Plymouth Argyle head coach Miron Muslic told BBC Sport:
"We faced today by far the best team in our competition
We were relegated since last week and still showed this kind of performance to make it very difficult for Leeds to break us - it shows the good spirit and character of the lads
"Our obligation today was to give it all
we played for the Green Army and we wanted to reward our fans for the last time with a strong performance
"The lads went all in and we simply needed maybe just 120 seconds to have a result we deserved
But that's when you face the champions
"Congratulations for an outstanding season to Leeds
deserved champions and congratulations to my colleague Daniel Farke."
Miron Muslic "proud" as Argyle run champions close
Leeds United head coach Daniel Farke told BBC Sport:
I want to send my congratulations to Burnley
"Of course I'm happy that we won this game in the final stages and are officially allowed to label ourselves as champions and be the best team this season
"It's an emotionally moving day because we have invested so much and wanted to crown ourselves with some silverware
pretty special in the dressing room and I'm very happy for my players and staff
Leeds United winger Manor Solomon speaking to BBC Radio Leeds:
"I can't put into words what I'm feeling right now
It is a dream come true to score the winning goal and take this championship
Throughout the season we've shown we deserve this trophy and to finish in the first spot
"We all knew what was happening at Burnley and we knew we needed to score
It will take me a few days to digest what happened today
I've been focused on this season; in two or three days we will talk and see what is happening
I don't know what the future holds [Solomon is loan from Tottenham] but I can just say I love [Leeds]."
Farke: 'A proud and emotionally moving day'

Plymouth Argyle head coach Miron Muslic says he "needs answers" over the future direction of the club
Barring a freak set of results on Saturday
the Pilgrims will be relegated from the Championship despite the best efforts of the Bosnian-born Austrian
Muslic says he still has no clarity over who a new sporting director will be at Home Park and is worried that other clubs will be ahead of the Pilgrims in preparing for next season
Director of football Neil Dewsnip left the club in January, soon after Wayne Rooney's departure as head coach with Argyle bottom of the league
Muslic has won nine and lost nine of his 23 games since succeeding Rooney but appears to have been unable to save Argyle from the drop
"I'm still here without a sporting director
I'm still here without recruitment department
very difficult," Muslic said ahead of his side's final game of the season at home to title-chasing Leeds United
"So I would love to answer these questions and to have also clarity for my point of view
"I believe in every strong organisation
regardless of the competition - Premier League
League Two - you need a triangle of sporting director
Muslic had a positive meeting with chief executive Andrew Parkinson in the last few days
which he described as "honest" and spoke about "some doubts that are clearly here"
But he says out-of-contract players such as Mustapha Bundu
and the likes of Ryan Hardie and Adam Randell - who are in the final year if their deals - have all come to him asking about their futures and he is unable to give them answers
"They tried to point out a couple of weeks ago already that we need to be fast behind them because other teams will come
so there are some questions I need answers to and then we can speak about the future," he added
if it's the coach I always respect him
I always think he will try the best possible to prepare the team to win a game
if they get potentially relegated like we and Cardiff
but also the teams currently now in League One
they will all have the desire and the inspiration to get promoted next year
so we have to find very fast another gear and to speed up the process."

Plymouth Job was an easy decision to make - Wayne Rooney
"I actually sold it to her that this is the Monaco of England," joked Rooney when asked how he persuaded his wife Coleen that taking the Plymouth job was the right move for his career
It was a light-hearted moment from the most high-profile head coach the Pilgrims had ever appointed
and ex-record goalscorer for the Three Lions
Rooney had done it all as a player with Manchester United
but the jury was very much out on his coaching abilities
A spell at Derby County had seen the club relegated to League One
although huge financial problems at the club absolved Rooney of much blame
before an uneventful spell with Major League Soccer side DC United in the United States
Then came a torrid time at Birmingham City in 2023
Rooney was brought in by the club's new American owners to play attacking football
but his spell saw Blues drop from the Championship play-off places to the relegation zone after just two wins in 15 games in charge
I raised an eyebrow and I said to myself 'I hope it works'," said BBC Sport journalist Drew Savage
who commentates on Argyle matches for BBC Radio Devon
"I'd been trying to interest my colleagues at BBC Sport at a national level in Plymouth Argyle for all my career and they very rarely listened
"In those six months when Rooney was manager
I had more conversations in the office around Argyle and my colleagues who do sport for BBC Breakfast and BBC News were far more open to mentioning Plymouth than ever before
"So I totally get what he brought to the table in terms of exposure
"Having a manager who was Wayne Rooney really helped in the coverage we got
a lot of that coverage towards the end was negative."
Wayne Rooney's first game as Plymouth Argyle boss ended in a 4-0 loss at Sheffield Wednesday
Rooney's first test was a trip to Sheffield Wednesday - a club Argyle had pipped to the League One title just 15 months earlier and who had
Plymouth had just one half-hearted attempt on target and saw Wednesday have 31 efforts at goal
it kind of came out of nowhere," said Savage
"We maybe hadn't played strong enough sides but I certainly wasn't expecting a 4-0 defeat
"It was a problem that would become perpetual - in far too many games teams could just play through the middle of us
"Something that did become a pattern was Rooney blamed the players
He also later admitted maybe he'd played too many of the new signings
"But I always got the feeling the way he thinks about the game as an elite player
I don't think he was ever managing in the amount of detail
that you need at Championship level - that you need to stop losing 5-0 at Cardiff and 6-1 at Norwich."
Things improved a bit as they won three and drew two more of their next eight league games
Rooney would win just one of his next 14 games as the Pilgrims tumbled to the foot of the table
By the time he mutually agreed to part ways with Argyle on 31 December, he had seen his side fail to score in 11 of his 23 league games in charge and concede three or more goals in eight of those matches
Among the horror shows Argyle fans will want to forget were the 6-1 loss at Norwich, where Rooney said Plymouth's under-18s team could have defended better, a 3-0 loss at Leeds
where his side did not have an attempt at goal
and a 5-0 drubbing at then bottom-of-the-table Cardiff City having gone down to 10 men
"When Rooney came he tried to play a certain style," explained former Argyle defender Brian McGlinchey
who works as a summariser for BBC Radio Devon
"It was a lot of attacking play through the lines
and sometimes I felt that maybe some of the players didn't have the ability to play that type of style and a lot of teams had worked Argyle out
"I don't think they were pragmatic enough to change their style to different teams they were playing and maybe adjust to where they were in the league and where they were on form."
Miron Muslic's first game as Plymouth Argyle head coach was a 1-1 draw with Oxford United on 14 January
Having appointed a head coach everyone had heard of
Argyle went completely the other way and got someone in that nobody had a clue about
The Bosnia-born Austrian may not have had the profile of Rooney
but he did at least have successful managerial experience having guided Belgian side Cercle Bruges to a Europa Conference League place
His reign began slowly with a 1-1 draw with Oxford United and a 1-0 home loss to Queens Park Rangers before his side were outclassed 5-0 at home by Burnley
the Clarets scoring four times in the final 15 minutes of a five-goal first half
capped off by one of the greatest wins in the club's history
FA Cup highlights: Plymouth Argyle 1-0 Liverpool
"Just to be there that day was an amazing thing I'll remember for ever," said Savage of the famous Sunday in February when Argyle knocked Liverpool out of the FA Cup
Plymouth had already beaten Premier League side Brentford in the third round under perennial caretaker manager Kevin Nancekivell and injured captain Joe Edwards
But under Muslic they put in arguably the most memorable performance of this season's competition beating a Liverpool side who were clear at the top of the Premier League
in the last 16 of the Champions League and Carabao Cup finalists
1-0 for one of Home Park's most famous days
"Any Liverpool team on paper should pretty much beat any Plymouth Argyle team on paper," Savage said of the win against the Reds
who had rested several of their star players
"But the Home Park crowd has played such a role in so many of the results we have had
and they tend to be results against teams we're not expecting to beat."
The crucial point of the season came in the first half of March
Argyle got a third top-flight side in the FA Cup and came away from their fifth round tie against reigning Premier League champions Manchester City with a creditable 3-1 defeat
They had a run of four 'winnable' games but lost to relegation rivals Hull City and Derby County
and were beaten 3-0 by Sheffield Wednesday - although a first away league win of the season at Portsmouth in the middle of the run salvaged some survival hopes
But while good wins over Norwich City and Sheffield United further increased fans' optimism
"The new manager came in and realised that he had to go a lot more resilient
harder to beat," explained McGlinchey
who saw Argyle move to three central defenders and a more compact and direct style of play
"They've got there to a certain degree
"But he's realised that defensively they weren't strong enough and he's gone there and he played five at the back and he's seen that they've had to change the style of play."
No side has conceded more goals in the Championship than Plymouth Argyle
It is simplistic to say that Argyle were poor at both ends of the field - but the statistics do not lie
They have conceded more goals than any other side in the Championship
while a recent flurry of eight goals in the past four games has seen them become the highest-scoring side in the bottom third of the table - but it was too little too late
The lack of another striker was key - with Muhamed Tijani out for most of the season with hamstring issues
and Ryan Hardie's patchy injury record over the Christmas and New Year period
"I still maintain that Argyle have not replaced Niall Ennis," Savage said
when the goals from Hardie dried up towards the end
"Argyle have failed to land anybody else who's capable of consistently shouldering that burden
"Tijani got injured and we've taken a while to work out exactly how to get the best out of Mustapha Bundu
capable of scoring goals in the January window then we would probably be in a better position than we are now."
Argyle head coach Muslic feels his side simply ran out of time to change course
Having won four of their past six games they gave themselves a chance until Luton's late heroics over Coventry on Saturday left them effectively down
but we will get up again," Muslic said
massive challenge and I think we took this challenge with courage
different set up and we simply ran out of games
"It takes a little bit of time to adapt
almost to change a mindset of an organisation
of a club and I think we have been fantastic
Plymouth Argyle beat Ipswich Town to the League One title in 2023 with a club-record 101 points
Argyle are probably in a stronger position financially then when they were promoted
They have benefitted from two years of the Championship's bigger television deal and have invested in infrastructure
such as a new training ground and improvements at Home Park
Owner Simon Hallett has said he is close to selling a stake in the club to new investors
he said he was confident the budget available to Argyle if they were to go down would be "considerably in excess" of the one in their 101-point title-winning season in 2022-23
"Our success off the pitch has enabled us to diversify and grow revenues to record levels," he said
returns on our investments position us well to remain financially strong in League One with the ability to fund a highly competitive first-team squad."
But who will play for the club is another matter
Argyle twice broke their transfer record in January to sign Ghanaian forward Michael Baidoo and Ukraine defender Maksym Talovierov
While Talovierov has been a hit at centre-back
failing to score or provide an assist and rarely featuring in the past few months
Both have international aspirations which might be difficult playing in League One
wing-back Bali Mumba and goalkeeper Conor Hazard could all attract interest from other Championship sides over the summer
It will be a test for Muslic - and whoever the Pilgrims bring in as a technical director - not only to retain as many of their most coveted players
but build a squad that can bounce straight back to the second tier
