Pizza Hut has been fined over £30,000 after rats gnawed on sauce pots and jalapenos packaging
A rat infestation was discovered at the restaurant pizza branch in Ponders End when Enfield Council visited on October 14 2022
poor pest-proofing and “a lack of cleanliness”
In follow-up visits the council found inadequate cleaning practices throughout the restaurant
raising concerns about surfaces used to prepare food
Pictures from the council visits show rat gnaw marks on sliced green jalapenos pizza topping packaging
Rat droppings and gnaw marks were also found on sauce pots under shelving in the storeroom
The Pizza Hut branch was handed a one-star hygiene rating
The sole company director of Exultant Limited
who is the franchisee at the Pizza Hut takeaway
immediately and voluntarily closed the premises due to an imminent risk to public health
Exultant Limited pleaded guilty to all charges at a hearing at Highbury Corner Magistrates Court on December 7 2023
At the conclusion of the prosecution’s case on the first day of trial on September 16
Mr Syed made an application of ‘no case to answer’
After hearing Mr Syed’s defence the District Judge found him guilty of all charges
The restaurant was fined a total of £30,586.52 for breaching food safety and hygiene regulations
Exultant Limited was fined £20,000 with costs of £1,258.41 while Mr Syed was fined £2,000 with costs of £6,528.41 and a surcharge of £800
A Pizza Hut spokesperson said: “At Pizza Hut
we take the health and safety of our customers and our restaurants very seriously and there are certain health and safety standards we expect all our Huts to uphold
“We are aware of this situation and we are in touch with the Pizza Hut in question”

A young motorcyclist has died after being hit by a van in north London

Plans for final phases of Alma Estate regeneration increase delivery from 401 units to meet “chronic” housing need
Housebuilder Vistry has secured planning permission from Enfield council to build 723 new homes as part of a wider scheme

The final two phases of the Alma Estate regeneration in Ponders End in north London
will deliver 187 homes for affordable tenures with the remaining homes a mix of private rent and sale
Of the 187 units designated for affordable tenures
80 will be for social rent and 107 will be shared ownership
which was granted in 2017 as part of the wider masterplan
The revised plans have maintained the same number of affordable homes but have increased the provision of social rented family housing
The properties will be built alongside 8,500 sq m of green and public space and around 330 sq m of new commercial space
The original six-hectare estate comprised 717 homes was built in the 1960s
Only one of its original four blocks remain and is due to be demolished
the Alma Estate will consist of 1,402 homes
This represents an uplift from the 993 units granted permission in 2017 and an increase of 24 social rented units
Construction on the latest phases are due to start in the first half of 2026
with an overall expected completion date of 2032

A second man has been charged in connection with a shooting in Ponders End, the Met Police has said
was arrested on March 16 and charged a day later with conspiracy to murder and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life
He is due to appear at Willesden Magistrates’ Court later on Saturday
The charge relates to a shooting which took place in Derby Road on January 7
a 26-year-old man was sitting in his car when he was shot
The victim was taken to hospital and remains in a critical but stable condition
N9 with conspiracy to murder on February 5
He appeared in custody at Willesden Magistrates’ Court on February 6 – his next court date has not been set
