SearchMay: SSFC Women's Ponteland defeat was "disappointing"Nathan BellJan 152 min readSunday’s skipper Natalie May says it was “disappointing” for South Shields Women to start 2025 on a low note
The team travelled up to Ponteland to face the newly-promoted outfit for the second time this season
following September’s 3-1 win against them in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup
as Annece Legg’s opener was cancelled out and then diminished as the hosts netted four on Sunday afternoon
“It’s disappointing to start the new year with a result like Sunday’s,” she reflected
“I believe there were spells that went well and spells that weren’t good enough
we need to recognise areas we need to improve on
take them away and work on them - consistency is something big we need to work and focus on.”
As disappointed as the team may have been about the final result
there can be no denying that it was positive to get out there on the field
following the somewhat extended Christmas break
It also marked the lasses’ first league outing in just over two months and May agreed that it was a good thing to get up and running once more
“We have had quite a few weeks off playing games on a Sunday due to the Christmas break and the weather but we have still been working hard in training to build and improve things
Legg’s opener was the key talking point from a Shields perspective and May is delighted for her teammate
She continued: “Annece’s goal was a big positive in the game; I’m really happy for Annece and especially for her confidence
“I can see Annece’s confidence building week on week and I have no doubt this will continue.”
whether the final outcome was positive or negative
and Sunday’s game offered the team some things they can take on board to learn from
“It can be tough at times to not be disheartened after a loss,” May finished
“however the only thing we should be taking away from games like this is recognising the things we need to learn and improve on
“I have no doubt that in the hands of our coaches
things will improve and get better - we know it’s also down to us as a team and individuals!”

Northumberland’s latest Active Travel Corridor
overgrown bridleway into a shared use facility suitable for walking
The 1.9km route has extended beyond the bridleway
forming a link between the centre of Ponteland towards Callerton with further links to the Tyne and Wear Metro
Ultimately the aspiration is to extend the route into Newcastle.
and there’s a number of schemes underway in the county
A shift away from reliance on the private car to more sustainable modes of transport
Improved road safety for cyclists and pedestrians
A reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from motorised traffic journeys
Promoting access to healthier lifestyle choices
Improved connectivity for cyclists and pedestrians
A number of innovative elements have been incorporated into the scheme to maximise safety of all users.
Glowing disc technology has been used as illumination along the route to avoid the need for mains supply lighting
They use natural light to charge throughout the day
Disturbance to existing planting and wildlife has been minimised by working with community groups to re-plant and re-use materials for landscaping.
Speed limits have also been reduced along the route as an added safety measure.
Deputy Leader of Northumberland County Council and Cabinet Member for the Council’s Cycling and Walking Strategy
said: “It’s great to be able to officially open this route and see the variety of users who will enjoy and benefit from it.
“Active travel schemes such as these are key to establishing healthy lifestyles
as well as contributing to a shift to more sustainable modes of transport.
“As well as supporting our climate change goal to be carbon neutral by 2030
one of our priorities is to introduce measures which make sustainable travel a more attractive
and easy alternative to getting around.”
County Councillor for Ponteland East and Stannington Lyle Darwin added: “It’s fantastic to have this new route open and I’m really pleased to see so many people using it – cyclists of all ages and abilities
“Any initiatives which make it easier for people to travel safely while improving their health and wellbeing are always welcome.”

Rayohits radionewcastlenewsPonteland wheelbarrow race is getting ready to rollOrganisers of the race tell us they are looking forward to the event tomorrow
The annual Ponteland Wheelbarrow race will go ahead this year as usual – thanks to additional support from a local watering hole
The traditional event – which dates back to the 14th century – takes place every New Year’s Day
with crowds turning out to support the fun event
Participants follow a circular course which starts and ends at The Blackbird pub
which is also a great supporter of the race
Organised by Ponteland 41 Club with the support of Ponteland Rugby Club and a number of volunteers
the race also uses the sponsorship and entry fees to support good causes
the history of the race can be traced back to the 14th century when Ponteland residents were suffering from a harsh winter
leaving food and fuel in very short supply
gathered the villagers and took them hunting
using wheelbarrows to bring their spoils back home
Since that time the wheelbarrow race has become an annual tradition
sponsored by the Ponteland Wheelers – the name given to anyone who helps the event in any way
This year’s race starts with the Noon Parade
Ladies’ Race at 12.20pm and the Open Race at 12.40pm
with presentations to the winners at 1.15pm
All the money raised will be shared between two charities
St Oswald’s Hospice and Tynedale Hospice at Home
Ponteland 41 Club member and one of the organisers
“We know so many people look forward to this event every year and it will be a fantastic way to get 2025 underway,” he said
“And we are so grateful to The Blackbird for their continued support at what is one of our most looked-forward to events.”
“The wheelbarrow race is always a fantastic start to the New Year and this will be true once again as we enjoy the first day of 2025,” Stuart said
“The Blackbird is at the heart of the community of Ponteland and this event is something all the team at the pub also look forward to
“It always has a great turn out and we love being able to welcome everyone into the pub both before and after the event.”
