Work to replace railway track on the level crossing means that diversions will be necessary for motorists
with buses replacing trains between Brighton and Littlehampton all weekend
People in Portslade are being advised to plan ahead as track work taking place over Portslade level crossing on Boundary Road will close it for two days
means that motorists are advised to use the A270 Old Shoreham Road as a diversionary route
The old underpass – a former cattle tunnel - will remain open for pedestrian use
A shuttle bus will also be available for people with wheelchairs
pushchairs and those who are unable to make use of the underpass
The bus will pick up and drop off between Portslade railway station car park
north of the level crossing (next to the cycle hub)
and Portslade station (stop C) outside Station Kebab House
The shuttle will operate from 01:00 on Saturday 30 November through to 02:00 on Monday 2 December when the crossing reopens
Brighton & Hove buses (route numbers 6 and 46) will be diverted via Old Shoreham Road
Route 1X will run via route 1 using Station Road
buses will replace trains all weekend between Brighton and Littlehampton
Rail services that usually run between London Victoria and Littlehampton will be diverted to terminate at Brighton only
Trains will continue to run between Littlehampton and Portsmouth Harbour or Southampton Central
Network Rail’s Sussex Route director said: “We’re replacing worn-out track in the Portslade area with new rails
and ballast – the small rocks underneath the track that support the rails and the sleepers
This essential work will mean a safer and more reliable railway for passengers
and as the work is taking place near the level crossing
and a shuttle bus is in place for the less mobile
“We’re asking motorists to leave a bit more time to travel as the diversion will mean slightly journeys
Trains will be replaced by buses when the work is being carried out
Thank you for bearing with us while we work to improve the railway.”
said: “We thank passengers and road users for their patience while these essential works are under way
“It means we won’t be running trains between Brighton and Littlehampton all day on Saturday
rail replacement buses will run between Brighton and Littlehampton
Please plan your journey ahead of time using the Southern website.”

Three men have been jailed for violent disorder for their role in a brawl in Portslade involving two rival barber shops
who instigated the “appalling” violence in a busy Station Road one lunchtime last year
Ibrahimi also came off worse in the brawl and his life may well have been saved by
He had a 2ft long cut down his left arm and other injuries that appeared to have been caused by a sharp blade although none was found
Emma Armstrong was one of two people commended for a High Sheriff’s award of £500 by Judge Stephen Mooney when he passed sentence at Lewes Crown Court this afternoon (Tuesday 2 February)
The other was an unnamed witness who provided video footage seen before Christmas by the jury during the trial at Brighton Crown Court
All three men were jailed for six months for having weapons – planks of wood and a metal bar or torch
Those sentences are to be served concurrently to – or at the same time as – their main sentence
said that Qadir and Ibrahimi travelled to Portslade on the day of the violence last April
Mr Evans said: “Qadir gave evidence that he was on holiday at the time and planned to go fishing
“The prosecution case was that these two were reinforcements who had been brought down especially and
The court was told that all three men were of previous good character and had difficult and troubled backgrounds
all three had a realistic prospect of rehabilitation and were not assessed as dangerous under strict legal criteria
spelling out the likely limits to the options facing the court
Judge Mooney said: “It was the early afternoon on (Tuesday) 2 April last year when the peace and quiet of those going about their lawful business in Portslade was completely shattered
“It’s difficult to imagine worse street violence … a scene of street violence the like of which I’ve never seen before and hope never to see again.”
pensioners and people in wheelchairs “were met by a scene of carnage”
The judge said: “Children were confronted with violence that they should never have to see … Anyone who watched this must have been terrified
“There were people expressing disbelief at what they saw … You collectively bear responsibility what it was that you collectively did
The hatred in your face and the level of violence you were prepared to use was difficult to observe
“If you had exerted a degree of self-control and walked away then none of us would be here.”
was cleared of violent disorder and having a wheel brace as an offensive weapon
was also acquitted of violent disorder and wounding Sarbast Ibrahimi with intent to do him grievous bodily harm (GBH)
“Members of the public who were simply going about their everyday lives found themselves suddenly thrust into a chaotic and frightening situation
“This incident has resulted in the sentencing of three individuals
and it serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of such violent actions.”
Not bad considering the number of offences
The ones who were acquitted were as guilty as the on2s who were found guilty
and the so called barber shops closed down
The ones who were acquitted were as guilty as the ones who were found guilty
So many barber shops in the City that always seem to have few customers
Seven people have gone on trial charged with violent disorder after a brawl between people linked to two rival barber shops on opposite sides of the same street
One man was stabbed in the fray and Richard Hearnden
gave a warning to jurors at Brighton Crown Court
Mr Hearnden said: “When you see the video evidence for the first time
I think it’s fair to say that it will be shocking
“This isn’t a film set with fake blood and stunt doubles but real people really being stabbed and bludgeoned
no one was killed and those hurt made a full recovery or are on their way to recovery.”
Mr Hearnden told the jury: “This case concerns an episode of serious disorder that happened in Portslade in April
The seven defendants in this case were responsible for the disorder
was so badly injured that one of his co-defendants
was badly injured and is treated as a victim of crime does not absolve him from taking part in the violent disorder
“The scene of this violent disorder is the street adjacent to two men’s barbers’ shops both of which are situated on opposite sides of the same road.”
The brawl started outside HB Barbers in Station Road
Mr Hearnden said: “What is it that started this violent incident
it is overwhelmingly likely that there is bad blood between the owners of the respective barber shops
boiled over in the early afternoon of Tuesday 2 April when
“Multiple members of the public said that there was a fight involving a large group of men who seemed to them to be associated with two different barber shops
“The violent acts were seen to be taking place in Franklin Road
“The first four defendants are from HB Barbers
HB Barbers bears the initials of the first defendant
“It is a new business and had been open a short period of time before the violent episode in April
Hogr Banaee is one of two directors and is
“K Barbers had been owned by the fifth defendant
It had previously been known as M&K Barbers
which had occupied the site for the previous three years
“It seems that rivalry between these two relatively new establishments
leading to appalling violence witnessed by the public at large.”
Mr Hearnden said: “It was described as being ‘very chaotic’
“The majority of the evidence comes from videos filmed either by static CCTV cameras or by people using their mobile phones
“Within seconds of the eruption of violence
“The weapon he uses is either a pair of haircutting scissors or a straight razor – the sort that barbers use
Even if Kozheen Banaee was defending himself or somebody else
what he did next went far beyond anything necessary to prevent further violence
“Kozheen Banaee then dragged this bladed weapon down through Sarbast Ibrahimi’s arm
“It was so bad that it caused a 15 cm long ‘de-gloving’ injury
an injury where the top layers of skin and tissue are torn away from the underlying muscle
“Sarbast Ibrahimi also received a further wound to his forearm – a deep cut down to the bone
required emergency medical treatment … (He) would have died because of significant blood loss without intervention.”
He had a wound on the right temple and a 4cm wound over the left shoulder
He had further wounds on his hands and legs
He had a scalp wound to the back of his head and was given stitches
“Kozheen Banaee injured him with intent to do him grievous bodily harm.”
Mr Hearnden told the jury: “Hogr Banaee (said) that the other group had walked past his shop
and they had sworn at him in English and in their native Kurdish
“He had just finished cutting a customer’s hair and that five men came over and tried to attack him
There was shouting and pushing and swearing
“He said that he thought he was going to die during the altercation and had no idea why he had been targeted
he confirmed that the object that he was holding was a torch
and it was kept next to the door by the till
“He said that he grabbed the torch because he was worried as he saw the men returning to his barber’s shop with knives or scissors in their hands
“Hogr had to defend himself by putting his arm up and he got hit on the arm and he sustained a small stab or cut to his right cheek
“He said that he was worried and trying to defend his brothers and his brothers’ friend.”
Others claimed to be acting as peacemakers or in self-defence
Mr Hearnden said: “On the other side of the ledger
Ayob Mohammed from K Barbers was questioned by officers
He said that HB Barbers had been harassing him ever since they opened
he was walking to work and Hogr started harassing him
He got others to come outside and the next thing he knew he was hit with a crowbar
“He said that he did not remember much more
albeit he denied that he had unlawfully assaulted anyone and that he had no weapons with him
“He said that he did not feel well enough to provide any further information and then answered no comment to all remaining questions in interview.”
is charged with violent disorder and having an offensive weapon in a public place
is charged with violent disorder and wounding Sarbast Ibrahimi with intent to do him grievous bodily harm (GBH)
is charged with violent disorder and having a plank of wood as an offensive weapon in a public place
Judge Stephen Mooney is hearing the case with a jury of five men and seven women
What the fuck has this country become either shoot all of them or send back where they came from
Will the judge give these barbers a clip behind the ears
It does make me wonder how any of the barber shops in Boundary/Station road can make any money from actually cutting someone’s hair
There are more Barbers in that road now than charity shops
surely there isn’t that much demand for a haircut
They all look very well presented shops too

A planning application to create 28 affordable flats and a new community centre in Portslade was approved by councillors at Planning Committee on 5 June 2024
The application is to demolish some residential garages to the rear of Dudney Court and the existing 556 sqm Portslade Village Centre in Courthope Close
These are to be replaced by 2 three-storey blocks containing the flats
a 397 sqm community centre and an outdoor play court
comprising a hard surface multi-use games area
This is a council development through the New Homes For Neighbourhoods programme
26 letters of representation were received objecting to the proposed development on grounds including concerns about the increase in parking demand and traffic flow; the area not being able to accommodate so many new homes; and the loss / reduction of community facilities
4 letters were received in support of the proposed development on grounds including that there is an acute housing shortage; the need for affordable housing; and the provision of good quality community facilities
Key considerations for councillors included the operation of the community centre; the impact of the development on open space and community facilities; impacts on the character and appearance of the local area; impacts on the neighbouring community; the mix and standard of accommodation provided and affordable housing provision
In recommending that the committee grant the application council officers highlighted that the buildings were sensitively designed to respond to the landscape and reduce impact on neighbouring amenity
and the ecological benefit the scheme would achieve through an uplift in habitats and hedgerow
and sensitive landscaping with 33 new trees
Following a debate the committee voted unanimously to grant planning permission
with a variation to the condition relating to the hours of operation of the community centre

City residents are invited to help celebrate 1,000 years of Portslade’s rich history at a free
Portslade History Day takes place on 7 September

including heritage trails and local history documentaries
Portslade History Day and the Portslade Conservation History Trail has been part-funded by the UK government and Brighton & Hove City Council through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund
said: “Portslade History Day is a popular local event
and a chance for Portsladers to celebrate our unique history
“But it’s an event for residents from right across the city
to come and enjoy a day out in Portslade and discover all that it has to offer – from its ancient heritage to the modern day
from excellent preloved shopping opportunities at Emmaus to the wide range of top-notch pubs and restaurants.”
To see the complete schedule for Portslade History Day, visit: www.portsladehistory.co.uk
Portslade’s post office has now reopened in a new location – with the same postmaster
The Station Road premises moved up the road into the former Sunshine Tanning Studio
It continues to offer the same range of products and services
There are three serving positions: two screened and a Post Office serving point at the retail counter of the convenience store
The opening hours remain: Monday to Friday: 9am – 5.30pm; Saturday: 9am – 4pm
the postmaster completed works to improve the entrance access on the incline to remove the previous step
Does “continuing to provide the same range of products and services” include a cash point ATM
There is only one other in Station Road at Tesco which is appalling for anyone needing cash out of shop hours
Yes there is a cash machine outside the new post office
Let’s see the outside then now please and the staff too
You know it’s only a post office really would like to understand why this is os important too know wot a but the babies in the park then 22 years on yesterday
The back garden of the house is filled with junk
A Portslade man has been ordered to remove tonnes of rubbish from his back garden after neighbours complained it was like living next to a landfill
Gary Cushing’s neighbours say the trash has been in the garden of his home in Old Shoreham Road for the last decade
attracting rats which have even got into their house
It regularly overspills into the alleyway behind their houses
And they say when he once tried to burn some of it
Brighton and Hove City Council served an enforcement notice on Mr Cushing’s ordering him to remove corrugated plastic
hardcore and rubble and materials related to keeping chickens in the rear garden and alleyway by 2 September
Any remaining items must be stacked in one place
He has also been ordered to trim and cut the shrubbery around the garden to a maximum of 50cm in height and from the boundary wall
cut the weeds and grass to within 5cm of the ground and then remove all garden cuttings from the land
said: “I’m from Brazil – I never lived in a favela there
“We shouldn’t have to live like this
It’s like living next door to a landfill.”
The alleyway behind their gardens was also regularly filled with rubbish
She said she had recently heard chickens in the garden
which she had recenty found in her house too
She said other neighbours had also complained to the council
Brighton and Hove News attempted to contact Mr Cushing
but had not heard back at the time of publication
I’ve noticed some of the council high-rises are bad for hoarding junk and flytipping like this
I’ve always liked the idea of a bulky waste amnesty day seasonally
where residents can get rid of their bulky waste for free
I feel the costs saved by not having to collect it as separate fly-tipping complaints more than justifies this
Two kittens were found dumped in a Portlade park this week
were found in a cat basket and handed into a local vet by a member of the public
After a thorough check over and a night at the vets
the kittens were then transferred into the care of Wadars animal rescue in Worthing
Wadars operations manager Tracy Cadman said; “It makes me incredibly angry when people dump animals like this
the basket had tape around it to keep it closed
so there was absolutely no way that the kittens got there by themselves
and whilst they are understandably quite nervous at the moment and are under close observation
they will eventually be looking for new homes.”
Wadars is currently caring for more than 30 cats and kittens at its rehoming centre with another 20 more waiting to be taken in
Since the start of the year the charity has been asked to take in almost 200 cats
many because their owners could no longer afford to look after them
Anyone interested in adopting a cat or kitten from Wadars should visit the charity’s website www.wadars.co.uk and click on the animal adoption tab or call 01903 247111
permission was refused despite my contract saying quote “Permission will not be reasonably refused.”
A planning application to create 15 new residential flats following the demolition of an existing community centre building on the junction of Windlesham Close and Locks Crescent in Portslade
has been approved by councillors on the Planning Committee
The development is part of our New Homes For Neighbourhoods programme which is building much-needed new rented council homes on council-owned land.
The planned three-storey split-height building would provide 15 residential flats
with proposals also including revised landscaping across the site.
All of the homes will be affordable housing provided at social rent levels and will be owned and managed by the council.
You can view the application and accompanying papers through our online Planning Register by searching for application reference number BH2023/02790
The application was first advertised in November 2023
Following the receipt of amended plans it was then re-advertised in March 2024
Twelve letters of objection have been received
raising a number of issues including the impact of additional traffic on local roads and parking; possible additional noise and disturbance; and overshadowing and loss of privacy for existing neighbouring homes.
Key considerations for councillors in reaching their decision included the additional affordable homes the development will provide
the loss of the existing community facility
the design and appearance of the proposed building and its impact on neighbours.
The standard of accommodation to be provided
ecology and sustainability issues were also considered
Committee members voted unanimously to approve the application

Siân Berry (Green Party) has been elected MP for Brighton Pavilion
The turnout for this constituency is 52,572
Peter Kyle (Labour Party) has been elected MP for Hove and Portslade
The turnout for this constituency is 52,156
Ollie Sykes has been elected City Councillor for Brunswick & Adelaide ward
Six candidates are standing for election to parliament to represent the Hove and Portslade constituency on Thursday 4 July 2024
The six candidates are Sophie Broadbent (Green)
Tanushka Marah (Independent) and Michael Wang (Liberal Democrat)
Each candidate answered questions submitted by voters. Here are the answers from Green candidate Sophie Broadbent, 46, an account manager, carbon measurement and reduction, and part-time therapeutic counsellor. She tweets as @SophieBroadbent
Why do you want to be an MP and how are you qualified for the role
I’m standing to be MP in Hove and Portslade because I want a positive political environment where diverse and inclusive people from all backgrounds work together in government towards a fairer
We need an urgent pandemic / covid-like response to the climate and nature emergency with social reform at its core
I know the country CAN do it – if we choose to
I’ve worked in many different corporate environments and volunteered widely
how would you deal with performance and pricing problems in privatised utilities such as the water companies
Public services should be owned by the public
We’d bring the failing railway companies back into public ownership
services such as the Royal Mail whose staff do a great job
We would subsidise the exorbitant cost of travelling by rail in the UK – higher than almost any other country in Europe
We would reform monopoly utility companies so they’re run for public benefit
We’d regulate the big five energy retailers to end the rip-off high energy bills and ban sewage being dumped in our seas and rivers
What would you do to help people who are struggling to rent or buy a home
Should second homes or Airbnb-style holiday lets be banned
Everyone should have fair access to an affordable first home
Hove is one of the most expensive towns in the UK to rent or buy a home
Green MPs will vote to provide 150,000 new social homes a year and end the so-called ‘right to buy’
so that these homes can belong to communities for ever
Private tenants need to be secure in their homes
and we will push to end no-fault evictions and introduce long-term leases
Renters will also be given a new right to demand energy efficiency improvements
What steps would you take to improve hospital performance
community care and access to GPs for patients in Brighton and Hove
We would invest in frontline health services – GPs are key to both prevention and early diagnosis – helping hospital waiting lists
and ensuring we all stay healthier for longer
One in 12 residents in Brighton and Hove provide unpaid care
funding commitments – including investing in and supporting our health workers
and increased pay rates and a career structure for carers to rebuild the care workforce
Events in Israel and Gaza have affected many members of the community here
What can people in your constituency expect you to say and do as an MP
The devastation in the occupied Palestinian territories is a terrible mark of how humanity can turn on itself and destroy the lives of people who just happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time
The Greens called for a bi-lateral ceasefire within days of the Israeli military’s initial response to the 7 October attacks by Hamas
Oxfam have pointed to evidence of war crimes including unimaginable numbers of civilians being killed and injured
We need an international and lawful political solution to the conflict immediately
Do you support building new homes and a replacement for King Alfred swimming pool in the Benfield Valley
My daughter enjoys footgolf with Girl Guiding in the Benfield Valley and learnt to swim at the King Alfred
I don’t want to see either of these landmarks damaged
Protecting our green spaces is vital for human health and wellbeing
more than 130,000 children are growing up in temporary accommodation
built to the right standards and in the right place
Green MPs will transform the planning system so new developments come with access to public services and green spaces are protected
Polling stations are due to be open from 7am to 10pm on Thursday 4 July
Photo ID is required for those voting in person
Do the Greens still believe in completely open borders or have they changed their mind about this now rents have gone through the roof
there is limited housing stock and the NHS is in meltdown due to huge demand on it
I think the main issue with that is a lack of housing being built above all other causes
Borders have very little influences on these in comparison
Each candidate answered questions submitted by voters. Here are the answers from Independent candidate Tanushka Marah, 49, a theatre director who posts on Instagram as @Tanushkamarahcampaign
People are tired of the way career politicians ignore voters’ views and they want a new kind of independent politics
I feel duty-bound to represent the millions who want an end to the Gaza genocide
who are being ignored by our Westminster political parties
I’ve lived in Hove and Brighton for 29 years
I’ve worked with young people across the constituency
building links with community groups to open doors to culture for young people of all backgrounds
I ran my own business and understand the struggles people face in Britain today
We need to bring all these essential services back into democratic public ownership
We need affordable rail fares to encourage more use of the train network and get people out of their cars
The privatisation of Royal Mail has been a disaster
with the private management seeking to undermine the universal service and hike prices
The water companies have taken £72 billion-plus in profits
failed to invest and now want to hike water prices to solve the sewage crisis they caused
We need publicly owned energy providers to drive the renewable energy transition
I support building more secure affordable council homes
I also support rent controls – including a freeze on most rents – to stop excessive rent rises
with the aim to bring average rents down to less than 40 per cent of average wages
No-fault evictions must be banned and notice periods extended for end of tenancies
First-time buyers and families must be given priority in all new housing developments
sales for second homes restricted and overseas sales of private homes or flats for investment should be banned
The NHS is being privatised by the Conservatives – and Labour wants to continue this policy
We need to end NHS privatisation and restore pay levels for all our NHS workers to halt the exodus of doctors and nurses to other countries and out of the health service
close tax loopholes and introduce a tax on the wealthiest 1 per cent to raise billions to restore our public services
We also need to build a National Care Service to end the crisis of elderly care and restore special needs and mental health services
I feel duty-bound to demand a ceasefire in Gaza
an end to UK support for Israel’s genocide
ending arms sales to Israel and an end to the occupation of Palestinian lands
The UK must impose an arms embargo and economic sanctions on Israel until it ceases human rights violations and the illegal occupation
We must also comply with and enforce the rulings of the ICC and the World Court
I will continue to campaign and speak up on Israeli apartheid and US-UK complicity until Palestine achieves self determination and freedom
It is vital that the popular King Alfred leisure centre is given the chance to continue to serve its local seafront community in its original location
It is a three-acre public asset built for the people of Hove 85 years ago
not a private building site for luxury flats
Full restoration would be the cheapest and greenest option and generations of residents could continue to enjoy it
It would also be great to have a new leisure centre in Hangleton
We must end the selling off of great public assets to private developers
Can you please ask your supporters to stop fly posting the city’s lamp posts
Isn’t that is against election rules
Tanushka platforms with people who praise Hamas
scream: From the River to the Sea …’ express admiration for communism and oppressive regimes but most importantly and sadly her campaign is run by people who were expelled from Labour because of antisemitism and she joins with people who were accused of hateful attitudes
She never mentions Hamas and her views are very immature
She says the conflict isn’t complicated as if the whole situation in the Middke East wasnt complicated
Palestine is her passion which is fair but unfortunately there’s too much hate for Israel and Jewish people and too little about Hove and Portslade
not antagonism and hatred and we need to build a strong community that will unite and not divide us
Has photos of her at a Gaza protest.on her leaflets
What’s happening in Gaza is awful but my priority is to where I live
Most Brisith people would never go to Gaza
and if they did I’m sure they won’t be welcome there
it doesn’t make much difference in the running of the UK
I would question the appropriateness of using up my vote for a candidate who is pushing a one-item agenda that’s not really relevant to a rank and file politician
The only comment from her that is reasonable is about The King Alfred
Hopefully this individual full of hatred will come last
The King Alfred as a facility should be revitalised in some form
I am not attached to the idea that it needs to remain in the same building and must be in the same spot
especially if a compromise can raise the capital to build a modern facility; and develop the city further
There will be people who definitely will be aligned with her rhetoric around Gaza; such is the emotion that drives the issue
Has anyone asked her about the October 7th atrocities and the hostages who are still alive
(even her election leaflet is the Palestine colours)
A protest candidate that really is not fussed about local or national issues
The only candidate in this constituency to oppose genocide
A vote for Tanushka sends a message to Peter Kyle and all other UK politicians that their support for an illegal war is not supported by the majority of the British people
Both the Labour and Conservative parties consistently support Israel’s illegal war
By voting for Tanushka I want to remind the major parties that their policies towards the war are losing them votes and are not supported by the majority of British people
How come nobody is calling for an end to Hamas attacking Israeli civilians
Everyone (including UN and ICC) is calling for an end to Hamas attacking Israel
And it will end when Israel implements a fair and reasonable two-state solution
How come you’ve nothing to say about 500 dead in the West Bank John and the theft of Palestinian land by settlers
I hope she visits them all before the election to get to know some of the members of the local Jewish community and get inisghts into how best she can serve their needs
Where has the money come from to take over a shop in Church Road
Is she for her self or the people and the community
Peter Kyle is a great supporter of the local Jewish community
Lucky we have a great MP that will be again our fantastic MP for this area on Peter
My advice to this lady is go back to your day job
Leave it to the best and you return to being one of the rest
Those who go on about Hamas and October 7 say nothing about 40,000 dead including 20K children
They say nothing about an illegal occupation for 57 years or Netanyahus war on the Palestinians in the West Bank too
Supporters of settler colonialism always ignore the colonists
People such as Israel’s fascist Police Minister Ben Gvir who 2 days ago suggested shooting all Palestinian prisoners
8,000+ of them all of whom have had no trial
I left finance and used that time to think
Every endeavour I’ve had since then has seen me or my business engage with the third sector
It dawned on me that I feel most fulfilled when I’m “doing” for others
and witnessed first-hand how effective local and national politicians impacted the lives of their constituents
There is a different kind of gratification to be had when the work you do improves the quality of life for someone else
Being of service is intrinsically a part of who I am
The old system of government ownership didn’t work and these monopolies need to be challenged so that they bring their prices down and provide a better service
I would work towards bringing in a sensible check and balance system that benefits both stakeholders (we
as well as more competition into these industries
We’re introducing means and methods to get people on the housing ladder
from Help to Buy schemes and no stamp duty for first-time buyers
We need to build more homes in ways that don’t disrupt our environment and not build on the green belt
one and two-bedroom box flats and more homes for families with outdoor space to thrive
The Conservatives have built more than one million homes in the last few years and will continue to build where people want to live
I fear for our green spaces if Labour is elected
Supporting our NHS is far more effective than blanket criticism and pointing out what isn’t working
It begins with meeting with local commissioners and trusts to understand their needs and strategies for targeting the primary care that we need: better access to GP appointments
reducing hospital wait times and surgery lists
I have immediate and extended family in the Jewish community in the UK
I speak as a former soldier and paramedic in the military
we were governed and abided by the Geneva Convention
This it meant that wartime efforts and actions were to never supersede basic human tenets
To cross them meant a descent into something else
What is needed is a ceasefire that truly means cease-fire
a beginning to discuss the future and not engage those who are determined to revive a vengeful return to the past
I do very much care about access to the facilities
not relinquishing the site to developers to build upon the seafront as we’ve seen elsewhere in the area
I’ve reached out to my councillors in the local authority to also champion the preservation and restoration of the site for continued public use and enjoyment
The crazy idea of knocking the King Alfred down and building flats to pay for a new sports centre on a cricket field is just plain crazy
Torys are on course for a wipeout generally
Some of them read like ChatGPT generated statements
She’s clearly a paper candidate going through the motions in the hope she’ll get a more winnable seat next time around by showing some effort
There seems to be a bit more of a focus on how CON are going to proceed at the next election
from the various interviews and tactics displayed so far
I don’t think they have much of a platform to stand on this time around and plenty to be criticised about
I do believe a strong opposition is needed
I wonder what political colour that opposition will be
As for who it is in Brighton the Greens and Tories only hold 7 and 6 council seats respectivly after losing 2/3rd and 1/2 their seats at the last local elections
I guess it comes down to which can de-toxify their brands the quickest and IMHO that starts with a full throated apology from both over their role in the i360
I left with no usable qualifications and the reading age of an eight-year-old
I fought to get to university and had to overcome many barriers
I got into Sussex University and went on to a great career
That’s why I feel qualified and why I’m driven to help others overcome barriers
The role is a real privilege and I hope I’ve served our patch well since 2015 – I try hard to speak out for residents
help anyone struggling and to improve our area
I can’t wait for those new seafront public toilets to be opened
I’ve been working hard to improve all these services but it’s been frustrating because I’m not in government and the problems are so deep
Labour in government would form Great British Energy
to cut bills for good and boost energy security
time-limited windfall tax on oil and gas giants
Labour will fully nationalise the train network within five years of coming to power
with a pledge to guarantee the cheapest fares
We will give Ofwat the powers to ban bonus payments to water bosses
We need to safeguard the Royal Mail as a British institution that works for workers and customers
Labour in government will protect our natural spaces and free up grey belt land for building more affordable homes for families
I’m very proud that the council are returning more homes into our council housing stock and the Hyde Partnership for building new affordable housing continues at pace
More than 2,000 houses and flats are “entire home / apartment” Airbnb rentals in our city and it’s too high and causes a lot of anti-social behaviour issues
Short-term holiday lets stifle the supply of rented accommodation and in turn drive rents up and conditions down and I support the council in looking at ways to manage this
The very first act of a new Labour government would be to cut NHS waiting times with 40,000 more appointments each week
paid for by cracking down on tax avoidance and non-dom loopholes
As an MP and as a Labour Party we are very clear
and aid must get to Palestinians who need it so desperately
The ruling of the Court of International Justice must be obeyed
Arms sales should be legal and only agreed by licence
Israel must heed the warning and demands of the international community
The UK government must uphold its obligations to international law
We desperately need a new leisure centre for residents
This is without debate – the current building is past its sell-by date and is falling down
I want residents to have access to a modern
new facility that is available to everyone and offers a comprehensive range of activities
I’m NOT in favour of anything being built in Benfield Valley but I’m in favour of any plan that gets this built somewhere soon – in the next five years
I must stress that the council is running a very intensive consultation process on this
She should have asked the one question that mattered
With net migration running at 685,00 a year in the UK (and the number predicted to rise) what would you do to help people who are struggling to rent or buy a home
Banning all the AirBnBs in the UK even at will provide enough homes for a couple of months worth of people arriving in the UK every year which means it means it will have a negligible effect for people looking to buy or rent
Oh yes I forgot Labour are going to ‘bust the gangs’ so in other words they don’t have an plan except to increase this number
So they are going to bust the people trafficking gangs
Fat chance just like they are going to bust the drug gangs etc
Sadiq Khan can’t bust crime in London what makes Labour think they can bust gangs in France and Romania etc
Why can’t they just be honest and say they aren’t prepared to do anything about it instead of pretending they care or have a plan and high rental prices and a shortage of housing is just something people are going to have to get used to
Can anyone tell me what he is done for Hove
Genuine question as I am struggling to think of anything
A vote for Kyle is a vote for a Labour mismanaged government
That’s unbelievable coming from a Tory
I’m going to enjoy seeing your lot of scalpers be utterly destroyed for a generation in a few weeks
You know full well that alleged tax rise figure is a lie formatted by tory insiders
of course a vote for a Labour candidate is a vote for Labour
Also please stop pedalling the £ 2k tax rise lie
And a vote for Carline Deal is a vote for more Tory mismanagement
It’s not an MPs role to ‘organise capital funding’ for anything
They can back bids and write to ministers expressing support but it’s for the council and other organisations to put the bids in and organise
Hyde Housing should not be permitted to build any new properties until they have resolved the huge number of problems in their existing buildings
But they do nothing and the tenants and owners end up paying for their incompetence
Support for Hyde Housing new developments is verging on criminal
Fab MP deals with communication quickly and is always happy to help
I suspect he might even increase his majority in Hove and Portslade
I challenged you on this kind of behaviour before
One that I note you remained unforthcoming with a reply
You are at your best when your fixing local issues
You are at your worst when you try to play Boris Johnson-style games
Quite a significant committee which speaks volumes about the true nature of his politics
Supporting an illegal war involves funding terrorism with our taxes – also illegal under the Terrorism Act 2000
Nice answers on Israel/Gaza issues but Peter did not support the vote for an immediate ceasefire in the commons
Both the Labour and Conservative parties support the illegal war despite rulings of UN
Each candidate answered questions submitted by voters. Here are the answers from Liberal Democrat Michael Wang, 29, an immigration lawyer who posts on Instagram as @michaelwlibdem and his Facebook page is Michael Wang for Hove and Portslade
I believe residents deserve a strong local champion who will listen to their concerns
respect their views and represent their interests to fight for a fair deal
I believe that in this election we are witnessing a huge shift in the landscape of UK politics and the time for truly progressive politics is now
This role has trained me to deal with complex legislation but also to understand the huge impact that governance
The Liberal Democrats believe that partnership between the public and private sectors
can provide the best outcomes for all of us
it is clear that the current arrangement is allowing private companies to completely disregard their responsibilities to the British people
That’s why the Liberal Democrats will end the scandal by transforming water companies into public benefit companies
banning bonuses for water bosses until discharges and leaks end and replacing Ofwat with a tough new regulator with new powers to prevent sewage dumps
Local residents are increasingly being priced out of living in Brighton and Hove
The Liberal Democrats are clear-minded in recognising that housing prices are fundamentally determined by the market which means the only way to solve the crisis is to increase supply
That’s why we will build the homes people need
with meaningful community engagement: 380,000 more homes a year across the UK
including 150,000 truly affordable social homes
We will give local authorities the power to increase council tax by up to 500 per cent where homes are bought as second homes and to introduce new planning classes for Airbnbs
Impartial research tells us that the only way to rescue our NHS and care system is through increased funding
That’s why I’m extremely proud of the Liberal Democrats’ manifesto pledge to raise taxes on those at the very top of the pyramid
with which we will deploy a £9 billion rescue package
we will give everyone the right to see a GP within seven days or within 24 hours if urgent
ensure 100 per cent of patients will start treatment for cancer within two months of referral and introduce free personal care
It has been truly shocking to witness the act of terrorism committed by Hamas and the kidnapping of civilians and then the subsequent humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza
Liberal Democrats were the first major party to call for an immediate ceasefire
We are committed to recognising the state of Palestine and working towards a two-state solution
We must execute existing laws properly so UK-made arms are not exported for the killing of civilians
I would be vigilant in calling out any Islamophobic or anti-semitic abuse or violence so that our residents can reside in peace safely
The proposed sale of the King Alfred site is completely unacceptable
The proposed tower blocks of luxury apartments will probably be sold to foreign investors rather than local families
The Benfield site will displace the Portslade cricket club and mean the loss of a green space that is highly valued by residents
I would support a further consultation that considers a development on the existing site and that offers a first-class sports centre
Brighton and Hove City Council should not rush to capitalise on the sale of a prime seafront site simply to plug a hole in their finances
There’s a few that have been refuted already
The 380,000 one for example – completely unachievable
See news item elsewhere on this website about council meeting where it will be decided quite soon
Would you agree that the selling of the site allows a new facility to be built
we’d likely have nothing as the repairs would become financially unviable to maintain
Seems like a reasonable way to generate cash flow to fund such an ambition
although I’d consider more along the lines of a senior housing scheme built there personally
as the displacement would give more suitable housing for our older residents
and open up council places for those waiting on the list for a win-win-win situation
Controlling what any developer wants to do will prove almost impossible
Be careful what you wish for as the urban grain is at stake
Do you want things to end up like the Marina where properties like that are bought in chunks of 10 floors at a time by investors
I can see Sussex Heights from my windows and at night they are black with emptiness and nobody living there
Second homers and investors would flog to the seafront property Bonanza
Local residents would get nothing and none would live there
