Poynton completed a NEMLA League and Flags double with Senior Flags Final victory against Brooklands
while Stockport retained their Women’s Senior Flags defeating Timperley in the final
Poynton raced out into a big first half lead
before holding off a spirited Brooklands fightback late on to run out 16-13 winners
Despite Brooklands getting on the board first
five goals without reply gave Poynton a commanding 5-1 lead at the 1/4 time
and a goal to stop the run after the break didn’t change the pattern of play
England and GB international Alex Russell led the way for the Blackbirds
including four straight goals in the second quarter
proving unstoppable for large periods on Sunday tormenting the Brooklands’ defence
Poynton face-off man Tim Ladner was also key
dominating from the X and ensuring a constant stream of possession for Poynton
while limiting any possible Brooklands momentum
After a comprehensive first half in which Poynton headed into the interval 9-2 ahead
Brooklands began to match their opponents across the field and began to get some at both ends
Attacker Nate McClean kept things moving for Brooklands
along with efforts from Blair Pachereva and Tim Collins keeping the side in touch despite regular response from Poynton
13-7 up at the 3/4 time it seemed as though Poynton would ease to the title
but a late flurry from Brooklands closed things up to a two-goal game at one stage at 15-13
But the ball was put back in the stick of Russell again and a solo effort added the goal’s final game as Poynton were able to see out the closing minutes and take the Senior Flags back to add to their League trophy
Stockport’s firepower proved too much for Timperley as they controlled the game throughout and post a convincing 17-9 win
The first two quarters featuring identical scoring
with England international Chloe Chan a driving force at both ends of the field
complemented by Karma Kabbani and Charlie Bell forming a formidable trio
while Chan posted threealong with a number of assists to regularly keep Stockport on the board
Timperley did rally early in the second-half
Ellie Racle scoring two goals to make things interesting
but Stockport responded with a four goal streak to put the comeback to bed at 15-7 at 3/4 time
The final quarter was an even 2-2 scoreline
but by that point Stockport were cruising and were on the way to sealing back to back Senior Flags victories

It’s been nine months since Gregor Poynton took the Livingston constituency with a 40.9 per cent share of the vote and the excitement sparked by the July election result has still not worn off
but I’m still learning all the names of them [the 650 MPs]”
“I never imagined I would get a job in politics
beside an unsuccesful attempt at the age of 21 to represent North East Fife at the 2003 Scottish Parliament election “to get a taste of it”
his role in politics has largely played out behind the scenes
Persuaded by a family friend to join the Labour Party while studying politics at the University of Strathclyde
he soon found himself interning for then Labour MEP Catherine Stihler and
He then went on to manage campaigns and political strategy teams
before finally ending up in the House of Commons
But Poynton’s track record goes beyond political manoeuvring
Early in his career he became captivated by the power of technology off the back of his involvement in the digital campaign for former US president Barack Obama during the 2008 election
Drawn by technology’s power “to engage people
and then actually put them to action”
he joined campaign strategists Blue State Digital
where he eventually took on the role of UK political director
He later became a partner at Portland Communications where he led a team of digital experts including video producers and web developers
his view on letting tech run wild has changed
“I’m very much still sort of pro technology
how we use technology in our public services and now in driving our economy
But we need to do that in a proportionate and correct way.”
Behavioural issues in Scotland’s schools have been boiling over in recent years
Now his days are filled with pressing questions on the dangers posed by online threats
In January he was selected to take on one of the most critical roles of the moment: chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Children’s Online Safety
his full attention shifts to his sons Lachlan
Poynton giving his backing for the government’s welfare reforms in the Commons
he tells Holyrood that discussions on when to give their eldest a phone have already taken over the parents’ group chat
research from Ofcom reveals that a quarter of UK children aged five to seven already own a smartphone
while half of those under the age of 13 are on social media.
Poynton tells Holyrood: “Ultimately phones and technology are going to be and are part of their lives
And you can’t put that back in a box
They’ll need it for their working lives
They’ll need it for their personal lives
as more and more public and private services are accessible online
so people need to be comfortable and familiar with how to use it… So that’s all to the good
Devising appropriate regulation and support for children and parents is going to be a “big issue” for parliament
He is keen to see a ban on phones in schools become law
describing the current guidance as a “waffle”
They’re [Reform] a sort of an undefined bucket for frustration
“Behavioural issues in Scotland’s schools have been boiling over in recent years
and pupils crying out for action,” he says
“Schools should be places free of and protected from violent and aggressive behaviour and a mobile phone ban I believe would benefit everyone.”
neither Holyrood or Westminster has enforced a complete ban
The UK Government issued advice in October on how schools should stop the use of phones
while last summer the Scottish Government published guidance empowering headteachers to ban mobile phones in schools
claiming it did not consider a national ban “appropriate or feasible”
However Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar has since pledged to ban phones in schools if he becomes the next first minister
Poynton continues: “I think as a government
we don’t think it’s a good idea to have them in and around schools and we want to make sure that that is clear for teachers
arguing that it is missing key opportunities to enforce stricter measures
“Apple and Google have a huge amount of data already on their customers
But if you’re one of those apps [and] someone just downloads your app
you don’t know [who they are] until they start filling in a form to tell you who they are
“Apple and Google should look at whether
when someone downloads an app that is for 18 and over...could they flag that that person might be under 18
they could then get sent on a different journey for age verification
but I believe they’re [Ofcom] not going to look at that for some time in terms of surveying whether that will be impactful.”
Will he let his sons use social media before they turn 16
He leaves no room for hesitation: “Absolutely not..
that’s a fight I’m without a doubt going to have.”
But Poynton seems to be an outlier within his party on the matter
Earlier this year technology secretary Peter Kyle said he had no plans to introduce a ban
pivoting away from previous remarks that the measures were “on the table” in a move which has also recently been shown to be against young people’s wishes
with seven in 10 agreeing that social media should be banned for those under the age of 16
The video has been geo-blocked in Australia but remains available elsewhere
I wouldn’t shy away from criticising him”
“It just seems to me completely and utterly unbelievable
It doesn’t seem to me to be a question of free speech
or a sort of edge case or a slightly grey area
that seems to me to be a black and white case
and people should not be able to access that video.”
Ultimately phones and technology are going to be and are part of [kids] lives
I ask him if Musk’s critical view of online safety laws will impact UK-US relationship
He says the relationship “is much broader than one multi-billionaire” but adds it “remains to be seen.”
It’s been a hard year for Scottish Labour so far
following its dip in popularity since Keir Starmer took over as prime minister
a Survation poll placed the party 13 and 10 points behind the SNP on the constituency and list vote respectively
And three weeks after its annual conference
new figures showed it had made little progress in the polls
still standing 11 and nine points behind the SNP
“I don’t think it’s [2026 Holyrood election] going to be easy”
citing the current SNP government’s record on health and public funding
he is “confident” that when the time comes “we’ll begin to see people think it’s time for a change with Labour”
he makes no secret of it – 2026 will be won or lost on unity
admitting his party hasn’t always been on the same page
“I think the new culture we hope as Scottish Labour MPs to create is one of a Team Scottish Labour… I think having that dynamic of Scottish Labour MPs and Scottish Labour MSPs working together as one team
well it’s not necessarily to criticise the past
but I think it isn’t the way it probably was in the past
I feel a real sense of political responsibility to help support us win in 2026
And in the past I think MPs thought the Westminster election was their responsibility [and] MSPs thought the Holyrood elections were their responsibility.”
Poynton with Sarwar and deputy prime minister Angela Rayner the campaign trail in Livingston | Image credit: Alamy
Poynton is familiar with challenging electoral situations
In 2015 he worked under Jim Murphy during his brief spell as Scottish Labour leader
the party got one of its worse results at a UK level
losing 40 seats at that year’s general election
there’s no doubt about that… I mean
after 2014 politics in Scotland changed around a sort of Yes/No dividing line
And 45 per cent of the vote gets you nowhere near winning a referendum but if you get 45 per cent of the vote in a four-party system
you absolutely run the table which is obviously what happened with the SNP
They were able to coalesce a sort of yes vote around the no vote
Conservatives and Liberal Democrats,” he says
he insists independence isn’t “uppermost” in people’s minds any more
citing his experience campaigning for the July election
“I had huge numbers of people say to me [that] if there was a referendum tomorrow
but they don’t think there’s going to be
and actually they don’t want there to be
because they wanted a government that was going to focus on growing the economy [and] get money and investment into our NHS...”
Poynton also recognises the Reform UK threat is “real” but predicts the party’s unclear policies will ultimately lead to their downfall north of the border
they’re a sort of an undefined bucket for frustration…[but] I think
they’ll have to lay out what their view will be
and I think people will begin to see that they don’t actually have the answers to the big questions that will be facing the country in 2026.”

This year's event will be held on Saturday 7 June
Poynton Rotary and Cheshire Concerts are marking 20 years of Party in the Park in 2025 with the June festival-in-a-day promising to be the biggest and best yet
This year's event will be held on Saturday 7 June and a full line-up of live music and festival fun is promised with three award-winning tribute headliners performing full hit-filled live sets alongside local acts and family entertainment throughout
The first Party in the Park took place in Cheshire's Poynton in 2006 with a Magical Brass & Beatles open air concert which raised £15,000 for good causes including hospices and the Royal School for the Deaf
the festival-in-a-day – staged in the picturesque Poynton Pool and Park – has continued to grow and has become a major fixture in Cheshire's summer events calendar while fundraising for worthy causes in the local area
After three successful Brass & Beatles events
in 2009 and 2010 Brass & ABBA concerts were headlined by the ABBA Reunion tribute band
while Brass & Queen entertained the crowds in 2011
The event was officially renamed Poynton Party in the Park in 2012
Among the performers who have taken to the stage over the past 20 years are disco legends Odyssey, X Factor's Andy Abraham, The Drifters' Steve Michaels, and top tribute bands celebrating the music of Take That, Michael Jackson, Robbie Williams, George Michael
the open-air music event has raised tens of thousands of pounds to help dozens of charities and worthy causes supported by Poynton & District Rotary Club
To mark this year's festival and the Party in the Park's 20th anniversary
Poynton Town Council plans to decorate the high street with bunting
signs and special shop window displays from 7 May onwards
Meanwhile partygoers are promised a full day of top live music in Poynton Park on 7 June with award-winning tributes to Oasis
there is a chance to celebrate the Manchester music legends in the company of the UK's number one Oasis tribute band Whatever
Hailing from the Gallagher brothers' home city
Whatever faithfully recreates both the sound and the look of the Brit Pop icons using authentic Epiphone Rivieras
Fender Precision Bass and Pearl Master Series drum kits
A dedication to authenticity means the band's performances are the closest you can get to experiencing a real Oasis concert
Expect all the biggest hits including Don't Look Back in Anger
Meanwhile award-winning Duran Duran tribute band DURAN will make its Poynton Party in the Park debut. With more than 25 years' experience, DURAN is one of the most established and respected Duran Duran tribute bands around, playing across the world and performing at festivals including Rewind and Glastonbudget as well as featuring on ITV, NET.TV and the BBC.
Creating an authentic sound by using the same equipment used in the studio by the New Romantic chart-toppers, DURAN delivers all the band's greatest hits as well as fan favourites in a stunning live show.
The third headliner, Space Cowboy – A Tribute to Jamiroquai, has been thrilling audiences across the UK and Europe for more than a decade, and will be coming to Poynton to put the party in Party in the Park.
Experienced musicians, amazing visuals and authentic outfits combine to produce a breathtaking show featuring studio and live versions of hits including Cosmic Girl, Canned Heat, Virtual Insanity, Deeper Underground and many more.
Space Cowboy's status as the definitive Jamiroquai tribute act was cemented when Jay Kay shared its first live medley video on the Grammy Award-winning band's own website, where it received tens of thousands of views, likes and shares.
The incredible line up continues with a selection of talented local performers supporting through the day including party band Parlaiz and local band Monkey Harris which celebrates its 25th birthday this year and returns to Party in the Park by popular demand.
The event will also feature its biggest production to date including pyrotechnics, confetti streamers, special effects and lots of fun for the whole family. Saturday 7 June promises to be an incredible day for the whole community.
The party in the park is staged once again by local festival organiser Max Eden working alongside founders Poynton Rotary to deliver a family-friendly ‘festival in a day' for everyone to enjoy.
Poynton & District Rotary Club was founded in 1981 and currently has around 25 members.
Along with regular meetings where it invites speakers to share their knowledge and increase social and cultural understanding, the club's members volunteer their time, professional skills and energy to improve the lives of people in their local community – bringing positive change to neighbourhoods - and for others around the world.
The club aims to raise between £10,000 and £15,000 for good causes each year, with the annual Party in the Park being the jewel in the crown of its annual fundraising efforts.
Max Eden said: “I'm excited to be delivering Poynton Party in the Park again this June. The annual open-air concert series has become a firm favourite with families and music lovers since it came to Poynton Park in 2006, and we've got a few special surprises planned for this 20th anniversary event.
“I'm also delighted that Poynton Town Council has plans to mark the special anniversary by decorating the centre of Poynton with bunting and displays. We're extremely grateful for their support along with our sponsors.
“Over the years, the day has also raised much-needed funds to allow Poynton Rotary to continue supporting many brilliant charities and community groups in our area, and with the amazing line-up we have for 2025, I'm confident we're going to make it a bumper fundraising year.”
The one-day festival will also feature a very special appearance on stage from everyone's favourite TV character Bluey, with a meet-and-greet opportunity too, and a number of family attractions including a traditional funfair with rides for all ages, alongside an extended showcase of the amazing local food and drink in the area and a VIP area offering premium seating and table service bar.
The festival is sponsored by Hall & Pickles.
This May, the University of East London's (UEL) Dance students will take over the stage for COLL!DE Festival - a five-day explosion of performance and professional ambition.
A new UK Tour of the Wiltshire Creative Production of The Girl on the Train is coming to Milton Keynes Theatre this June. Learn more about the show here!
Ed Coleman (I AM HANNAH, C4), Mara Allen (MACBETH, Shakespeare's Globe) and Ashlee Irish (HELLO, DOLLY!, London Palladium) will star in the UK premiere of THE WHITE CHIP.
The week-long celebration of women in the arts will feature a wide range of gatherings, workshops, and performances. The festival will be hosted by Exeter Northcott at their city-centre Barnfield Theatre.

Having officially secured the title at the end of February
Poynton were presented with the trophy having lost just once all season
who sit in second and third place respectively
Poynton will finish at least nine points clear at the top of the table which could be as many as 11 points should those teams taste defeat on the final day
It’s been an incredible season for Poynton who last lost a league match in February against Brooklands and claim their first NEMLA Premier Division title since 2018
they also claimed the European Club Championship and the Men’s Senior Flags titles and they have the opportunity to secure a double this season when they take on Brooklands in the Senior Flags Final at Rochdale Lacrosse Club on Sunday 27 April
Poynton have an enviable amount of talent in their ranks including England’s William Baxter and Alex Russell and are led by England coach Mike Bartlett; they’ve now got just over three weeks to prepare for that Senior Flags Final showdown with Brooklands
Rochdale have been promoted to the Premier Division after winning the Championship title with a game still to play having gone unbeaten throughout the season
Brooklands A are Division 1 champions with just one defeat
and Brooklands ExA secured the Division 2 title finishing two points ahead of Mellor B in second
The Women’s Division is still to be decided with Stockport currently sitting top of the league with one game left to play but Oxton hot on their heels with two games remaining

defeating Heaton Mersey 12-7 on opening day and Mellor 23-1 last week
They currently have the best defence in the league
conceding just eight goals in their two games
and have also scored the most with 35 goals
Sheffield have only played one match so far this season

and head into this second game looking to get their 2024/25 campaign up and running with a first win

The Northern Flags Festival is back this weekend
promising an action-packed showcase of lacrosse as teams from across the region compete for top honours in one of the sport’s most prestigious events
the two days of competition features a massive 15 finals taking place across the range of age groups
The annual festival marks the finale of the knockout competitions for men’s and women’s club teams across the North of England
with a full slate of junior and senior matchups showcasing the best of the regions talents
The Men’s Senior Flags final will see Premier league champions Poynton face Brooklands as the Blackbirds go in search of a league and flags double
In a generally tight and unpredictable league season
Poynton were the runaway standout side finishing with a 13-1 win record scoring 200 goals and finishing with a huge +105 goal difference
that single blemish on the Poynton record was delivered at the hands of Sunday’s opponents Brooklands who beat the future champions 10-9 at Poynton back in February
Brooklands finished the league season in 3rd place
but just missing out on goal difference with an overall 8-5 winning record
A win for Poynton in the final would give them a first flags success since their historic four-peat run that stretched from 2016-2019 in four memorable repeat finals against Cheadle
Brooklands are chasing their first ever Senior Flags win under their current name
though of course the club was hugely successful under the former title of Old Hulmeians
winning 13 Senior Flags in total from their first in 1907 through to the last win in 1976
Stockport will be out to retain the title they earned last year against Mellor
this year taking on Timperley in the showpiece final
Stockport pulled off an impressive 12-11 semi-final victory over Oxton to make this year’s final
while Timperley downed last year’s finalists Mellor 11-8 to secure their spot
We look set for a closely contested final this year
as while Stockport did win their most recent league meeting back in March 12-9
the first league fixture between the sides ended in a 12-12 draw
The Flags Festival this year continues to champion the women’s and girls’ matches across the weekend
now with five women’s lacrosse finals to take place from the U13s through to the Women’s Senior Flags alongside the 10 Mens’ and Boys’ finals

Vernon Building Society has completed the refurbishment of its Poynton branch
the last remaining bank or building society branch still open in the town
The £150,000 refurbishment of the Stockport mutual’s branch on Park Lane
is a further demonstration of the building society’s commitment to the high street
and comes alongside the announcement that the Vernon plans to have a presence in all Greater Manchester boroughs within the next five years
This commitment to the high street comes in stark contrast to decisions of other banks to close branches
reveals around 6,000 branches have closed across the UK since 2015
with a further 645 earmarked for closure this year
378 banks and building society branches out of 695 have closed
The Vernon in Poynton has been given a contemporary interior with a modern looking but traditional counter service
open plan booths for Members to receive face to face support
two interview rooms for customer privacy and a customer seating area. Part of a £1.2m investment programme to improve its six-branch network
Vernon’s Poynton branch is the fifth to have been completed
As with its other recent branch refurbishments in Reddish
Bramhall and its St Petersgate HQ in Stockport
The Poynton branch was designed by Standing Space
and work has been carried out by local contractors Monks Morton Design Interiors
The Vernon hopes that renovations will start on its final branch
by the end of the year or the start of 2025
“As the only remaining high street branch in Poynton it was especially important for us to be able to offer face-to-face banking services in a great environment
receive mortgage advice or discuss their online banking
we have a friendly team offering an expert service and now in new modernised premises
“We’ve been in Poynton since 1971 and in the current building for 13 years so we’ve got to know people in the town really well
through them coming into the branch and through our sponsorship and funding initiatives
Poynton is a town close to our hearts and we’re proud to be serving it
“As a building society that serves the whole of Greater Manchester as well as Cheshire
we have plans to be physically available to even more Members by opening up in every Greater Manchester borough over the next five years
most likely via community collaborations and hubs.”
The Vernon Building Society ties with Poynton run deep
It has a long-standing sponsorship with the Poynton Brass Band dating back over 35 years
which ensures the band continues to delight audiences throughout the UK
It has also provided funding for dementia group
who provide inclusive and accessible cycling facilities
