Reform UK have won a seat on a second Welsh council following a by-election in south Wales
Kenfig Hill and Cefn Cribwr ward in Bridgend on May 1
after the resignation of former Labour councillor Mike Kearn
The vacant seat was won by newly elected Reform councillor
who clinched it with a narrow margin of only 30 votes
He edged out the second placed Labour candidate Gary Chappell who ended the night with 667 votes and the third placed Independent candidate Rhys Watkins with 351 votes
Following the shock result he will now join two sitting Labour members for the ward – current deputy leader of the council
He also takes his place as the second Reform politician in Wales to have won an election following a win at a Torfaen Borough Council by-election earlier this year
Cllr Clatworthy said: “I’m incredibly humbled and it’s a true honour to have been elected
I ran a campaign based on people because many are fed up of being ignored and want to see change
“The work begins now to build a better future for everyone in the ward and I will stand up for the community and put people first.”

No surprise that Owain Clatworthy is a recent member of the Conservative Party
I bet he didn’t raise that much when campaigning in Cefn Cribwr
I say this with the no happiness but another awful result for Plaid in a working class south Wales ward
I really hope they are doing some soul searching
They don’t need to do any soul searching
They need to do some actual grassroots work and sort out moribund constituency committees across the south
Plaid has no chance in South Wales next year
but there was a very strong branch there in the 70s
So the grassroots feelings may still be there
Who’s waiting for the flypast by Nigel Farage with a banner proposing a new Bank Holiday celebrating himself
All I see in this lineup are those who would sell Wales down the river to please their cult leader Nigel Farage
They are merely sheeple led by their noses
The very same mindset opposed devolution in 1979
They also hostile towards and likely voted against Wales having a legislative powers in 2012
They opposed the increase in Senedd members from 60 to 96
ironically a change that increased their chance… Read more »

As a welsh socialist it grieves me that a party that wants to privatise our public services
that’s led by privately educated millionaires and that was born out of the most fanatical union jack waving elements of the tory party is probably set to be the biggest party in Wales’ parliament next year
And everyone that believes in a just and compassionate Wales needs to ask ourselves how such a terrible prospect as Reform possibly forming a welsh govt has come to pass
Certainly its a shocking indictment of Wales governing class for the last 25 years
A governing class… Read more »
Presumably Reform don’t have a leader in Wales because they don’t need one just for a county of England
they only have a group leader in the Senedd rather than a party leader in Wales:
https://nation.cymru/news/andrew-rt-davies-criticised-for-falsely-claiming-hes-leader-of-the-welsh-conservatives/
Good point I think that will affect their credibility in Cymru
Then again are Reform’s UK nation specific
It’s reasonable to assume their light blue approach to Wales will be based on the long-standing dark blue approach which was neatly summarised in that article last year: >>> A Welsh Conservative source
said: “Andrew may like to think he’s the leader of the Welsh Conservatives
Unlike in the case of the Scottish Conservatives
which is a fully-fledged entity in its own respect
there is no stand-alone Welsh Conservative Party
The Welsh party is essentially an offshoot of the English party
and It would therefore be… Read more »
‘The vacant seat was won by newly elected Reform councillor
who clinched it with a narrow margin of only 30 votes.’ Sign of the times
This phenomenon might turn out to have run its course before the next Westminster election
but I don’t think there’s any chance of it doing so before our next Senedd election only a year away
I think we may yet have to face our own ‘Trump experience’ here in Wales
though fortunately there’s a pretty good chance that we won’t get anything… Read more »
New rules in next years election but I haven’t quite parsed them yet
AfD have been deemed right wing extremists by Germany security service
That same AfD that gave Reforms owner a standing ovation
‘New rules in next years election but I haven’t quite parsed them yet.’ If I’ve understood correctly
we’ll be asked to vote for a party ‘ticket’ rather than for individuals
of voting for different parties on the constituency and on the regional list will be gone
While I back the expansion of the number of MSes – too few backbenchers under the present system for a healthily functioning democracy – I’m less happy with ‘list’ elections
There’s a value in being represented by a specific member rather than by a ‘batch’
As for AfD,… Read more »
He screams free speech abuse in the UK but is shutting it down in the US free speech
He attacks a president that is trying to defend a country but defends a president that dodged the draft
vance is a truly nasty bit of work to step up to the plate
We can only put this down to a lack of confidence within our own people in Wales
The perception of there being a ceiling to our ambitions
That we should always accept our fate as second class citizens in our own country of Wales and therefore always accept what the UK English/British state (ie
English government) hands down and dictates to us and even with their own political parties and society
that should not be the case and should never have ever been accepted

Jenkyns was saying Reform wants to take the UK back to the glory days
Guess what the very next question every single reporter in Wales needs to be asking reform
It’s ironic then that she’s only in power because of devolution
they have had in the English local elections
Nothing is given because Reform now have enough rope to permanently harm themselves because they have to deliver public services on the ground
The Fakebook army of bored retirees will be very quick to highlight when things go wrong in their local area
in that Reform UK in a great many places has needed to ramp itself up rapidly from pretty much of a standing start
And that must mean that in rather a lot of those places they will have had to recruit candidates quickly
and inevitably without much prior scrutiny and due diligence in many instances
And while they will have certainly recruited some ex-councillors and former supporters of other parties who have a degree of local government experience and knowledge
my bet is that a large majority of their newly successful candidates will have no… Read more »
And it’s not just what will go wrong that’ll shock
It’s the cover-ups and other potentially unethical activities they might resort to in order to avoid embarrassing The Leader with failure
Will illegal immigrants get blamed when nosy journalists start disappearing
It’s appalling that there’s enough people with such disdain for Wales to elect such a candidate

Following his unforgettable round at the incredible Royal Porthcawl, Golfshake's Andy Picken continued his tour around Bridgend in Wales by paying a visit to Pyle & Kenfig Golf Club
After experiencing Royal Porthcawl
which was one of the great golfing days of my life
our hosts at Pyle & Kenfig had arranged an afternoon tee time that perfectly suited my previous night's imbibing.
We had the joyous experience of playing with the Club President
They were all justifiably proud of an excellent golf course that has been a qualifying venue for some important international events.
This is an aspirational venue that is already of a very high quality and wishes to be better
A waiting list is in place for membership such is the local demand
this is unlikely to affect its current management style
The clubhouse is excellent with sensible rules regarding the use of phones and manner of dress
Its great potential and location were recognised with Harry Colt tasked to enhance the course
After WW2 and several changes around its perimeter
Mackenzie Ross was asked to create the current back nine
There are six "A" additional holes in addition to the usual 18-hole layout
and in winter they allow the championship holes to rest in rotation
This is a busy venue with qualifying for the Senior Open held here in 2014 and 2017
It has hosted several prestigious amateur events in recent memory
It feels like there are two distinct styles of courses
there is a gentle opener to ease you into the round
so he eased players steadily into the round
There was therefore no excuse for my topped opening drive
in front of a gallery of interested observers
The first has trouble and OOB along its entire length left forcing a tee shot towards fairway bunkers
The next hole requires a fade off the tee towards a pinched fairway and a trio of bunkers at the shoulder of the dogleg
All the greens at P&K are excellent and true
They had benefitted from ironing on the morning prior to our tee time and were marble-fast compared to some courses I have played recently
The short holes are excellent and demand a focused approach linked with an accurate tee shot
The weather during our visit was pleasant and warm enough for jumpers
but I can only imagine what havoc could be caused as the wind draws off the sea
The longer holes offer the chance for adventurous golf but be mindful of the craft of the designer with his bunker placements
The double-tiered 6th green is another delight
I played a conservative shot past the flag to be met by a rollercoaster of a putt back to the pin.
The 7th is another excellent par 4 of 348 yards at its maximum
This is a perfect dogleg offering chances to cut the corner supported equally by hazardous bunkering and gorse for those who fail
The 9th is another good par 5 of 566 yards at its maximum length
The entire length of the hole to its left is out-of-bounds and is joined by the same on the opposite side of the fairway from around 150 yards out
we walk across the road towards a hole that is protected by water hazards along both flanks.
The next few holes are of a style that is reminiscent of some of the best Irish links played within the deeply ruffled dunes and sand scrapes of Portmarnock or Royal Portrush
It can feel claustrophobic and tight plotting around the deep valleys and natural dunes
but it was sheer golfing pleasure to experience it
The 10th has a range of water hazards requiring accurate play supported by a well-protected green complex
I really enjoyed the challenges offered by the next group of holes as they were so different from the front nine in style and layout
The short holes were nothing short of superb.
The 13th is a short par 4 dogleg right of only 369 yards
14 is another gorgeous golf hole as it wends its way through the towering dunes
No bunkers are needed on this fairway as the layout itself provides all the protection the hole needs to defend itself against par
Two bunkers short of the green offer a visual deterrent for the overly ambitious
The 15th is another testing but beautiful short hole
visually intimidating due to the ring of bunkers ready
willing and able to capture anything played short
Please take a moment to enjoy and appreciate your surroundings on this tee box
The pressure tightens with the closing holes as they become progressively more difficult
We were playing in benign weather conditions
and I can only imagine how difficult these could be if the weather is adverse.
The 17th is a blind tee shot but the line of attack is very clearly marked by the fairway marker post
This gives the best chance for a second to another well-guarded green
the closing hole is tight and needs accuracy from all shots played
OOB its entire length left with water hazards in the form of drainage ditches patrolling the right side
The green complex is then additionally protected by bunkers left
The course has areas of common ground within it that are publicly accessible walkways and bridleways
I was surprised to see a young lady riding her horse at full gallop along one of these paths parallel to the golfing grounds
A majestic sight and sound as horse and rider thundered along
This is a magnificent golf course and club that delivers a premium product with great value for money
A stay and play short break starts from £79 and that is superb value given the quality of the food
This has the feel of a club for the members by its members and if I lived nearer
I would certainly be adding my name to its waiting list
We decided to eat at P&K that night so we could experience the full club experience
An excellent range of beer and food with access to Sky Sports TV and a clubhouse packed with fellow golfers
This is a golfers' club with the previous season recording success by all sections at all levels in local and regional competitions
A considerable achievement given the number of excellent courses within the area

Springdances: Revel & Reckon opens on Thursday
and features work from NYC-based artist and choreographer Katy Pyle alongside UWM Dance faculty
Pyle is an accomplished dancer and the founder of Ballez
a New York City ballet company that restages classical dances to promote LGBTQ+ narratives
They visited UWM in the spring semester to work with our dance students ahead of Springdances
Springdances proved to be a perfect opportunity for Pyle to reset a work they created during the pandemic
which was previously only presented via livestream from an empty theater
Reworking it in 2025 was a positive experience for Pyle
They feel this new version reflects the chaos a lot of students may be feeling now
“Because of the current moment… I condensed all the audition solos into one chaotic mad scene in which everyone is auditioning at once,” said Pyle
When dance students work with guest artists
While some could perceive this as difficult
Pyle stays productive and uses the finite time together as a way to bond with students
“I think there’s something really precious and sacred about a condensed work period
in which everyone’s sole focus is on what we’re creating together,” said Pyle
but it was four days in which everyone was all in!”
Dawn Springer (Teaching Faculty I, Dance)
whom Pyle met during an informative period at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts
Pyle entrusted Springer to continue preparations with PSOA students
While Pyle was grateful to have a trusted advisor to continue their work
they also placed trust and confidence in the PSOA dancers
“These are really generous and receptive young artists
Much of Pyle’s work through Ballez and beyond seeks to update classical ballets
This approach was brought to PSOA as Pyle worked with students to see ballet in a positive light
“We were able to share stories both good and bad about ballet
and I think that really helped with performance quality for the dance itself,” said junior dance student Isaac Robertson
Katy’s work is all about radical self-expression and love for your community.”
Robertson expressed gratitude for working with Pyle
believing that the opportunity to work alongside guest choreographers can have lasting impacts on a student’s career
“Not only do we get to work with more diverse artists
sometimes life-long connections,” Roberston said
“The people you meet in college can sometimes be the most important.”
Another student who expressed gratitude in their working relationship with Pyle is junior dance major Brooke Allison “BA” Parkinson
Parkinson’s past with ballet became a major part of the process in working with Pyle
which helped them feel more comfortable about the piece
Katy took the time to discuss our personal experiences with ballet in relation to our identities,” said Parkinson
“They placed how the choreography looks and how it feels to embody dance on the same level
encouraging us to think about how we can make ballet both physically and mentally as comfortable as possible.”
Parkinson praised Pyle for promoting the limitless possibilities that are available in the arts
it’s not some frivolous thing we do or see to pass the time; it’s created to express oneself and connect with others,” said Parkinson
“Not only can guest artists lead to future career opportunities
they give us exposure and insight as to what is possible in the arts.”
Springdances: Revel & Reckon premieres five bold new dance works that capture the beauty and contradictions of contemporary life with choreography by Katy Pyle and UWM Dance faculty Mair Culbreth
Springdances: Revel & Reckon opens April 24 and runs through April 27 at Kenilworth Square East
Tickets and more information can be found on the PSOA Events Calendar.

Tom Cowan didn’t hesitate when asked about his favorite column written by his famous relative
It’s perhaps Pyle’s most well-known dispatch from the Italian front in World War II: “The Death of Capt
Pyle described how soldiers in the Army’s 36th Infantry Division paid tribute to their fallen company commander
just the way he describes so eloquently the outpouring of the men to their captain,” Cowan said Saturday while aboard the ferry to Ie Shima
where a ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of Pyle’s death would soon begin
and I always used that as an example of how I wanted to lead my troops.”

The post has maintained Pyle’s memorial and hosted the annual ceremony since 1952
“Many of those World War II veterans are no longer here to tell the stories,” Occomy
That story to this day still lingers on in the many writings that he published.”
Pyle became known for his down-to-earth reporting on the lives of enlisted troops during some of the war’s most significant battles
He began covering the war for Scripps-Howard newspapers in 1940 during the German bombings of London
He later embedded with troops in the North African campaign in 1942-43 and reported from Italy and France in 1944
the year he received the Pulitzer Prize for his war correspondence
Pyle joined the 77th Infantry Division during the Battle of Okinawa and was killed when the jeep he was riding in came under fire from a Japanese machine gunner on a ridge above
He was buried near the site of his death; his remains were later moved to the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu
He “told the story of the American fighting man as American fighting men wanted it told,” both III Marine Expeditionary Force deputy commander Brig
Trevor Hall and Cowan said during their remarks
quoting President Harry Truman’s tribute after Pyle’s death
“Few individuals in history have done more than Ernie Pyle to educate us on the cost of conflict and the brutality of war,” Hall said
The Ernie Pyle Legacy Foundation also hosted a ceremony Friday at the Punchbowl

A Norfolk breast cancer patient has become the first person to benefit from a game-changing new treatment
received the new Surface Guided Radiotherapy
(SGRT) at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH)
It uses specialist cameras in a system called AlignRT to create a unique 3D outline of the surface of a patient’s body
It helps patients get into the correct position more accurately and quickly
while it can also be used to automatically interrupt treatment if the patient is no longer in the correct position
It reduces treatment time while also increasing accuracy and patient comfort
Ms Pyle has experienced both methods of treatment
She said: “I am really pleased and honestly a little excited to have been the first person to have benefitted from the new SGRT
there’s no need for pen marks or permanent tattoos and it’s much quicker for me and the really wonderful staff delivering my radiotherapy.”
Radiotherapy is the use of powerful X-rays to treat cancers
the new equipment has been installed on all five of its TrueBeam linear accelerators (linacs) and the department’s dedicated CT scanner
clinical operational manager at NNUH (therapeutic radiographer)
said: “SGRT is a complete game changer for patients
and we are so excited to be able to use this new technology
Patients don’t need to be handled and moved by us as much

The treatment is described as cutting edge

In true "The Devil Wears Prada" style, Carol Han Pyle landed the post-grad job a million girls would kill for: an Elle fashion assistant manning the coveted fashion closet
Thus, Nette — Pyle's New York-based candle and fragrance brand — was born in 2021
Her early childhood memories include watching her mother making candles by hand
but when Pyle began researching the candles burning within her own home
she noticed a lack of transparent ingredient lists and well-branded stories across the category
"I really wanted to create something that could live up to the level of a very luxury
beautifully branded product that still did things in a way that made me feel really comfortable," she said. She also cited her storytelling skills honed from her background in editorial as a key to growing Nette: "I've always been a storyteller at every touch point in my career
and I think that that basic skill has lent itself so well to building a brand."

Pyle also opened up about some of the surprising aspects of becoming a beauty entrepreneur, including the "utter need for capital." Looking ahead, Pyle teased an upcoming perfume launch, a high-profile new hire and category expansion. Watch the full interview here.

I just thought of the piece as a way to make people a little curious,” Pyle said

the driver charged in the death of 19-year-old Alexus "Lexy" Pyle in August 2021 was sentenced Tuesday to five years with the Montana Department of Corrections following an emotional hearing in Yellowstone County District Court
who was 19 when the crash happened in downtown Billings
had agreed in March to plead guilty to one count of criminal endangerment
Judge Jessica Fehr handed down the sentence
The prosecution argued that Hunter should receive a 10-year prison sentence while the defense asked for a more lenient sentence with time deferred
NOTE: The initial version of this article incorrectly reported that the defendant was sentenced to prison
The story has been updated to correctly state that the sentence imposed was a five-year commitment to the Montana Department of Corrections
Fehr ordered a full sentence of 10 years to the state Department of Corrections
Hunter must complete 500 hours of community service
submit to mental health and substance abuse treatment and have no contact with family of the victim
Fehr recommended community service aimed at warning teen drivers about the dangers of speeding and reckless driving
Hunter had been cited four times for speeding in recent years
"The defendant has a history of excessive speed
as well as a failure to follow up on those tests and to follow four orders," said Fehr
which notes just in the window of time before this accident
the courtroom was packed with family members of Pyle
who was the passenger in the vehicle driven by Hunter in a two-vehicle collision on First Avenue North in Billings on August 3
I should be enjoying watching my daughter grow up
Her life was cut short at 19," said Taylor Dunn
"Her life was just starting and you made the dumb decision that killed my beautiful
Hunter was speeding while heading west on First Avenue North and had previously run a red light
He then collided with another vehicle attempting to make a left-hand turn from North 12th Street
Hunter later admitted to police he had been drinking before the crash
but prosecutors dropped those charges in January
Hunter had initially been charged with negligent homicide before agreeing to the March plea deal
Taylor said her family will continue to help the community through the Love for Lexy Foundation
And I'm just hoping that people will remember her
I don't want people to forget who she is or who she wanted to be," said Taylor

Growing up on an Indiana farm in the early 20th century, Ernie Pyle yearned to travel the world. The Navy Reserve veteran got his wish while becoming the United States' most well-known war correspondent during World War II
serving as the de facto eyes and ears of Americans eager for news about their sons
Pyle traveled to France with troops on a ship transporting tanks, but he was not allowed to go ashore at Omaha Beach until the day after the invasion
The delay did little to lessen the impact of his words as Pyle
who won a Pulitzer Prize in 1944 for his war reporting
told of dead bodies lying as though they were sleeping peacefully on the sand and various personal items that served as poignant reminders of the invasion's toll
"I picked up a pocket Bible with a soldier's name in it, and put it in my jacket," Pyle wrote
"I carried it half a mile or so and then put it back down on the beach
iron contraptions placed in the sea -- just waiting for landing craft approaching the beachhead
Allied military leaders, including Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower -- supreme commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force -- realized going into the invasion of Normandy that the casualty rate was likely to be high
it was unavoidable if the ultimate goal was to be achieved
Pyle wrote about how the first waves of troops were on the beach for hours
But amid such long odds -- "the advantages were all theirs, the disadvantages all ours," Pyle wrote -- the war correspondent witnessed the resolve of Allied service members to continue the fight, no matter what it cost them personally, up to and including death. Although 4,415 Allied troops were killed on D-Day, according to the National D-Day Memorial Foundation
the losses could not be tallied only in a body count
as Pyle laid out in "The Horrible Waste of War."
In that column, Pyle described walking for 1½ miles along the beach and seeing destroyed military vehicles everywhere he looked. Pyle talked about landing craft tanks (LCT) turned upside down, boats on top of each other, half-sunk barges and "the angled-up corners of jeeps."
The journalist also spotted rolls of barbed wire and piles of life belts amid what he described as "this shoreline museum of carnage."
"The wreckage was vast and startling," Pyle recounted
has always been one of its outstanding features to those who are in it
And we did expend on our beachhead in Normandy during those first few hours."
searching against hope for the service member to whom he belonged
and troops working feverishly to move supplies into France to keep the Allies fortified
When Pyle climbed atop a bluff, where the Allies had constructed a tent hospital and prisoner-of-war camp, he was awestruck in "The Horrible Waste of War" by what he saw at sea -- "the greatest armada man has ever seen and a giant collection of ships waiting to unload." Reinforcements were nearby
"They didn't say a word to each other," Pyle remembered
The expression on their faces was something forever unforgettable
In it was the final horrified acceptance of their doom."

will add 110 doors to the carrier’s regional network
A. Duie Pyle has agreed to acquire another two terminals from bankrupt Yellow Corp. for $4.5 million, according to court documents
The terminals, in Bowling Green, Ohio, and Charleston, West Virginia, will add 110 terminal doors to the Pennsylvania-based LTL carrier’s growing regional network. A bankruptcy judge approved the deal Friday
The facility at 20820 Midstar Drive in Bowling Green is about three times the size of the one in Charleston. The Ohio facility offers 80 doors and 43,735 square feet on a 24.1-acre property, according to previously filed court documents
has 30 doors and 14,800 square feet on 3.32 acres of land
Pyle’s most recent acquisitions add to the previous four terminals it acquired from Yellow in 2023. The carrier also bought back a lease from Yellow subsidiary New Penn Motor Express on a terminal in Queens
The Ohio terminal joins another site that Pyle operates in Cleveland
as well as a Columbus terminal it leased from ABF Freight
which Pyle will move into sometime in early Q3
But Pyle’s expanding direct service to Ohio — and Dayton Freight Lines’ move into Pennsylvania — won’t end the carriers’ two-decade interline relationship
which sends about 20 shipments per day in each direction
“We realized that it's more effective just for us to open Ohio and for them to open PA
but the partnership remains strong,” Luciani said
“We'll continue to give them shipments outside of the state of Ohio
