Watching a movie isn't always an easy experience the absolute minimum you can ask when watching a film is that you come out the other side of it happy with how you spent the last couple of hours of your life Regardless of whether you were looking to laugh you want to be happy with your decision to watch it.  What you may not expect is for sitting in the cinema to feel like something akin to an endurance test Boundaries and limits are there to be pushed after all and certain films actively look to see how far they can take them while others try to give those watching a rush of adrenaline Some of these have gone so far as to see physical visceral reactions (some more serious than others) while others have seen audiences just give up entirely and leave the theatre this represented success in what the film was trying to achieve but you can't get more vindicated in trying to shock someone than by seeing people leave the cinema whether by causing genuine medical emergencies or offending the masses way past the point a form of entertainment should.. Shock value can be a powerful tool in movie-making and storytelling with plenty of films flying as close to the sun as possible with the likes of violence something that Lars von Trier has crossed on multiple occasions The director was banned from the Cannes Film Festival in 2011, when he made comments about being sympathetic toward Hitler while screening his movie the ban was lifted and he brought The House that Jack Built to the festival who not only murders women and children graphically and violently in spite of the tough-to-watch content of the film it may have been the message that Jack (Matt Dillon) portrayed that audiences had a problem with At one point the character speaks about the injustice of men being assumed to be guilty questioning why it's always the man's fault.. it could have been the gratuitous violence or it could have been a mix of both that caused over 100 people to walk out during the Cannes screening in 2018 The producer tried to convey that the message was about the "psychological side of evilness" but it doesn't seem as though many saw it that way WhatCulture is part of Future plc, an international media group and leading digital publisher. And now – 14 years since the release of the eighth and final film – his loyalty seems to have paid off. ‘Everyone knows that Tom has Jo’s blessing,’ a source told me. ‘While others turned their backs on her, he treated her with dignity even if he disagreed with her. ‘And now it seems he will be the one original cast member who will be involved with the new production.’ Actor Tom Felton has Harry Potter creator JK Rowling's 'blessing', according to a source Felton is still in touch with his former co-stars via a designated WhatsApp group The 37-year-old has endeared himself to Warner Bros and is set to undertake work behind the scenes during this summer's filming of the HBO series Fans hope a grown-up Felton will return to the new series as Draco’s villainous father Lucius, who was played by Jason Isaacs in the original franchise. While I’m told that this is unlikely, showrunners want to use him in other ways. ‘The producers want to keep the television series separate from the original movies,’ my insider added. ‘Tom has expressed an interest in visiting the set and meeting with the actor playing Draco, and Warner is keen to make it happen. There has even been talk of getting him involved in creating behind-the-scenes content for HBO which could form part of a documentary about the making of the TV show.’ It is quite a feat by Felton, who is also known for his roles in the West End and in Hollywood franchise Planet Of The Apes. He remains close to Radcliffe, Watson and Grint, and has previously told me they still keep in touch via a WhatsApp group. But, unlike his co-stars, he has refused to be drawn into the debate about Rowling’s views on the trans community. Pressed on his views in 2022, he appeared to stand by the author, saying: ‘No one has single-handedly done more for bringing joy to so many different generations and walks of life. ‘I’m constantly reminded of her positive work in [the literary] field and as a person. I’ve only had a handful of meetings with her but she has always been lovely. So I’m very grateful for that.’ Rowling’s relationship with the original cast deteriorated in 2020 after she published a 4,000-word essay on her website, writing that women should be defined by their biological sex and not their gender identity. Some hoped Felton would play Lucius Malfoy in the upcoming show, with Jason Isaacs taking the role of Draco's father in the original franchise Rowling's rift with Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint was sparked by the author's outspoken views on trans issues Daniel Radcliffe responded with his own statement, released through LGBTQ charity The Trevor Project, saying that ‘transgender women are women’. The now 35-year-old reignited the row in an interview with US magazine The Atlantic last May, when he said that Rowling’s views ‘are not the views of everybody associated with the Potter franchise’. He added that he and Rowling have not spoken since the controversy erupted, saying: ‘It makes me really sad, ultimately, because I do look at the person that I met, the times that we met, and the books that she wrote, and the world that she created, and all of that is to me so deeply empathic.’ Emma Watson, 35, also spoke out after Rowling’s initial comments, posting on X: ‘Trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned or told they aren’t who they say they are.’ Rupert Grint, 36, also waded into the row, telling The Times in 2022: ‘I liken JK Rowling to an auntie. I don’t necessarily agree with everything my auntie says, but she’s still my auntie.’ That same year, Rowling was notably absent from the franchise’s 20th anniversary reunion, which aired on HBO, amid rumours the rift was to blame. And it certainly doesn’t seem to be healing. Just last month, Rowling appeared to take a swipe at the three former child stars when she replied to a tweet asking: ‘What actor/actress instantly ruins a movie for you?’ Without missing a beat, she wrote: ‘Three guesses. despite their two-decade connection with the franchise I can reveal that the trio have been ‘kept in the dark’ about the new TV project So much so that they weren’t even informed that a remake was in the works they will only learn which three young actors will be playing Harry Ron and Hermione when HBO officially announces them in the coming months ‘It’s heartbreaking for the three of them,’ one insider told me ‘Their childhoods were devoted to creating Harry Potter and it held such a special place in all their lives ‘But now as the world looks forward to seeing the stories on screen again Instead they face the prospect of being completely replaced in the minds of future generations of Harry Potter fans.’ Those fears are well-founded according to another industry source who has been working on the new series ahead of filming this summer at Warner Bros Studios Leavesden in Hertfordshire Rowling will serve as an executive producer with HBO saying she has been ‘very involved’ in the series to ensure it is a ‘faithful adaptation’ of her seven books my source says Rowling is ‘relishing the opportunity’ to breathe new life into the books – and banish the memory of the original stars who she believes have thrown her under the bus The source added: ‘Jo adores the magical world she created and can’t wait to bring it to life again with young ‘This is her chance to move on from all the vitriol she has endured at the hands of those she made famous and start again with a new set of faces it is her ultimate revenge for their betrayal.’ Warner Bros invited him to open a new Harry Potter experience in Chicago on an all-expenses-paid trip Standing inside a recreation of Ollivander’s Wand Shop he said he was ‘very excited’ to see the new series - which will star US actor John Lithgow and comedian Nick Frost Pressed further on whether he would like to return Any chance to be part of the Wizarding World is a good one.’ he added: ‘I’ll definitely be sneaking into a background shot as an extra.’ The comments below have not been moderated By posting your comment you agree to our house rules Do you want to automatically post your MailOnline comments to your Facebook Timeline Your comment will be posted to MailOnline as usual We will automatically post your comment and a link to the news story to your Facebook timeline at the same time it is posted on MailOnline To do this we will link your MailOnline account with your Facebook account We’ll ask you to confirm this for your first post to Facebook You can choose on each post whether you would like it to be posted to Facebook. This article was amended on 21 March 2025 to better reflect the text of JK Rowling’s 2020 essay in a summary of her views. Read our Privacy notice JK Rowling has appeared to take a swipe at Harry Potter stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint on social media The 59-year-old author has drawn plenty of backlash over the years for her views on trans rights, which have ostracised her from the former child actors who starred in the blockbuster Wizarding World adaptations, and with whom she once had a close relationship. Rowling, who once stated she would rather go to jail than refer to a trans person by their preferred pronouns, previously said she would not forgive the actors for criticising her opinions, telling them to “save their apologies” – and she has renewed hostilities with the trio once again on social media when Rowling was asked: “What actor/actress instantly ruins a movie for you?” she responded: “Three guesses While the author added laughing-face emojis to indicate humour the post has been widely interpreted as being aimed at Radcliffe Rowling first made her stance on transgender women public in December 2019 when she tweeted in support of researcher Maya Forstater, whose job contract at think-tank Centre for Global Development was not renewed due to a series of tweets she had made questioning government plans to allow people to self-identify as another gender These initial remarks prompted backlash from fans of the author who labelled Rowling a “terf” – an acronym that stands for trans-exclusionary radical feminist went on to post a much-maligned essay about gender identity ideology on her website she outlined five reasons to be “worried about the new trans activism” which received condemnation from Radcliffe and Watson who said: “I want my trans followers to know that I and so many other people around the world see you respect you and love you for who you are.” Radcliffe was the first of Harry Potter’s lead trio to speak out against Rowling’s views on transgender identities “Transgender women are women,” he said in a 2020 statement released by The Trevor Project a suicide prevention charity for young LGBT+ people He acknowledged that Rowling is “unquestionably responsible for the course my life has taken” but said he felt “compelled to say something at this moment” very much as though I needed to say something when I did was because I’ve met so many queer and trans kids and young people who had a huge amount of identification with Potter on that.” In 2024, the actor revealed he had not spoken to the author in years “because I do look at the person that I met and all of that is to me so deeply empathic.” His 2020 statement was backed by Grint and Watson Hermione star Watson also cryptically addressed the furore at the Baftas in 2022. That year’s host, Rebel Wilson stating: “Here to present the next award is Emma Watson she said: “I’m here for all the witches!,”which many interpreted as a dig at Rowling In April 2024, following the publication of the Cass report, Rowling said she would not forgive the actors, saying they could “save their apologies”. Marathon Majors Six Star Medal in stunning style on Monday The British legend only returned to a marathon course for the first time in 10 years in Tokyo last month the other race apart from Boston which she needed to complete to claim a coveted Six Star medal That covers the world’s six biggest marathons though Sydney has now been added to what is a seven-strong list The former world record holder (she held that honour for a remarkable 16 years after running 2:15:25 in London 2003) is now aged 51 and dipped under the three-hour mark in Tokyo with a time of 2:57:22 But she went even better in Boston – here’s what happened… Radcliffe has had to battle a long-term foot injury which made a second marathon in less than two months even more of a challenge But she clocked an impressive 38 minutes for the opening 10km and her half marathon time was 1:23:15 She said later on Instagram: “My calf went at 9 miles and I couldn’t go full out from then on, but on the plus side the foot is great and I got to savour and enjoy those @bostonmarathon crowds.” She battled on brilliantly to ace what is the world’s oldest annually run marathon with a finishing time of 2:53:44 That placed her first in the female 50-54 age category – out of over 1,300 competitors And she very nearly made the top 150 women overall in a race that was won by Kenya’s Sharon Lokedi Radcliffe raced Boston wearing bib number 215 in honour of her former women’s marathon world record time of 2:15:25 Lokedi shattered the previous Boston course record time of 2:19:59 when she won the elite women’s race in 2:17:22 but that was almost exactly two minutes off that 2003 London time of Radcliffe And as Paula herself had pointed out in the build up to Boston a race she has always wanted to compete in but the proximity to London had made it difficult She said on Instagram: “Ticking off no 6 an excuse to be back in this atmosphere again and perfect symmetry for me in finishing where the journey started 33 years 1 month ago in Franklin Park winning world juniors XC!” Afterwards she confirmed: “That’s me signing out on the roads now Lesson learned that my body is done with that.” Her daughter's cancer diagnosis was horrific so seeing her run this year's London Marathon will make it even more poignant This article first appeared in Radio Times magazine Paula Radcliffe always finds the London Marathon emotional But this year she's going to need an extra pack of tissues ran his first London Marathon; 20 years since she broke the world record for a women-only marathon; and 10 years since she ran her final London Marathon Britain's most successful female distance runner is speaking by video link from her home in Monaco on a typically busy day She has just been on a run and is squeezing me in before picking up Isla and her 14-year-old brother Raphael from school at the age of 51 and a decade since she retired Although she’s not running in London this year, Radcliffe has been chronicling the build-up to the event with a podcast series, Paula's Marathon Run Club, offering advice to runners at all levels. The series is, fittingly enough, sponsored by Children with Cancer UK the charity Isla is raising money and awareness for Before she was diagnosed in 2020 with a malignant dermal tumour in her right ovary \"Now she just runs for herself,\" Radcliffe says it’s just a part of her proving that she’s healthy enough to finish a marathon.\" \"She was the one who said it will now be three generations who have run the London race when the 11-year-old Radcliffe not only watched her father run it but also saw Norway's Ingrid Kristiansen break the women's world record first achieving her goal (in a mixed-gender race with pace-makers) in 2003 But it's not records she’s thinking of today It’s something far more important – her daughter’s survival who has now been clear of cancer for four years She’d won the regional under-13 cross country championships in 2020 and was also an excellent swimmer she found herself permanently exhausted and was sleeping until noon Radcliffe assumed she had just become a tricky teenager Isla had always enjoyed competing with Raphael to see how long they could swim underwater She was getting terrible stomach aches because of the growing tumour \"That’s when we knew something wasn’t right and we went to the paediatrician,\" says Radcliffe we had a scan on the Wednesday and one week later we were already in the hospital starting the first round of chemo.\" Was she always confident Isla would pull through You have to not think of the alternative.\" But watching her daughter go through three courses of chemotherapy was horrific \"It’s the hardest thing a parent can go through It’s horrible to watch your child suffering through that it was killing the cancer.\" And so it proved Radcliffe asked her gynaecologist if she could freeze her own eggs in case Isla was left infertile she isn’t going to want your 47-year-old eggs!'\" She laughs I said I would cut my hair off and get it made into a wig for her and she didn’t want people asking why I’d done it.\" However much she and Isla prepared themselves for losing her hair \"There are things you’re not ready for – either going through it or as a parent.\" but she still has psychological aspects to contend with \"She doesn’t know how it has affected her chances of becoming a parent,\" says Radcliffe \"She now has a tendency under stress to get allergic reactions on her skin and we don’t know whether that’s linked to the treatment.\" But Radcliffe knows Isla is one of the lucky ones She says it’s heartbreaking how many children don’t make it 87 per cent of those diagnosed will make it but in the less-developed world that figure is below 30 per cent.\" The disparity is shocking Isla’s cancer has changed the family in so many ways They learnt to embrace support from others in a way they never had before Radcliffe says she wouldn’t have got by without it not least because Raphael needed looking after while she concentrated on Isla \"There was a huge amount of mother’s guilt for the fact that you have to focus more on one child for that period of time.\" But it brought the best out in Raphael (who represented the Provence Alpes and Côte d’Azur region in the under-15 national cross country championships in March) probably in a way that most 14-year-old boys are not I hope he doesn’t lose that because it’s really special He’d even let Isla sit and curl his hair when she had no hair to curl the only proviso being that he would brush it before he went out anywhere He spent a lot of time with her and worrying about her and they have a closer bond because of that.\" The same is true of Isla and the children's father Gary Lough (who coached Radcliffe to the world record in 2003) \"It was probably even harder for him than me because only one of us could be in the hospital,\" Radcliffe reflects and gained the kind of perspective that many people struggle to find even in adulthood \"Things that her peers might get really stressed about because in her mind it’s not that big a deal.\" Such as She tells them to their face they’ve annoyed her and then moves on She doesn’t worry about little teenage things like what you might wear.\" Radcliffe is also convinced that the experience has improved Isla’s brain because it was forced into overdrive when she was catching up \"She says she has a really strong memory now because she had to work so hard.\" Isla is hoping to go to Durham University to study law It really brings that home – value what you have,\" she says Just being able to get out and run helped me to have more energy to give to Isla when I was back in the room.\" She believes that’s an important lesson for parents – to look after yourself in order to be fit to help your sick child Radcliffe expects Boston (on 21st April) to be her final marathon which will mean that she has run in all six majors Chicago and Tokyo (which she ran in March in a time of two hours Despite her world records and numerous medals Radcliffe never stood on the podium at the Olympic Games made it bigger than it should have been and pushed too hard for it and it not working out makes it so much nicer when it does.\" she’ll be commentating as part of the BBC team Radcliffe knows she’ll have to focus on the elite pack but she’ll doubtless be tracking Isla’s progress and hopes to be there at the finishing line for her \"It’s an extremely emotional place to be anyway that’s going to be a bit more emotional.\" And I can already hear it in this proud mother’s voice The latest issue of Radio Times is out now – subscribe here Paula Radcliffe says London which inspired the likes of Jane Austen Mary Shelley and the Brontë sisters - to a new generation of readers Radcliffe published five novels in her lifetime however it was the success of The Mysteries of Udolpho - the story of a young woman kidnapped by a heartless villain and forced to endure the terrors of the Castle of Udolpho -  that saw her popularity skyrocket in the 1790s.  Contemporary reviewers compared Radcliffe to Shakespeare with some hinting at the idea that she might be better than the bard at creating a sense of terror and suspense Such was the love for her writing that Radcliffe’s later works were almost instantly pirated adapted and reissued for readers around the world They were sought out by some of the major publishers of the 1790s - commanding remarkable sums publishers bought Udolpho for £500 when at the time authors were generally selling their manuscripts for an average of £10.  Through the huge popularity of her writing Radcliffe became a central figure in British literature in the late 18th and early 19th centuries and firmly established the Gothic as a literary genre - one of the most popular genres in world literature today.  Radcliffe is now relatively unknown and her novels are not widely read outside of academic circles and sponsored by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) is aiming to change this by publishing her complete works as well as producing a new series of podcasts public lectures and outreach programmes with schools Professor of Romantic Literature at the University of Sheffield said: “Ann Radcliffe was one of the highest-paid authors of the 18th century receiving remarkable sums for her later works The Mysteries of Udolpho and The Italian Her popularity continued into the Victorian period Why she faded into relative obscurity in the 20th century is intriguing but this project seeks to reinstate her at the heart of Gothic and Romantic literary culture by producing the first major edition of her works and acknowledging her major influence upon those authors “Radcliffe’s works strike a perfect balance between serious considerations of the role of women and ownership of property in the late 18th century keeping you on the edge of your seat as you read them.” The researchers will oversee the production of The Cambridge Edition of the Works of Ann Radcliffe The eight volumes will be published between 2025-28 and will also appear in a more accessible paperback format is also set to be published and will highlight the conditions that made her distinctive in the period 1789-1826 as well as some of the challenges that come with editing and reading Radcliffe in the 21st century Professor Wright teaches Radcliffe’s novels to English literature students at the University of Sheffield and has a number of PhD students researching Radcliffe’s life and work AHRC-sponsored Research and Innovation Associate explains why the works of Radcliffe were so well read at the time: “Radcliffe was instrumental in popularising the Gothic as a literary genre and was considered Her work was regularly celebrated by critics and used to measure the skill of other writers and her success inspired an array of imitators Her influence can be felt in the works of her Romantic and Victorian predecessors too: each of the major Romantic poets and writers paid her homage and she provided inspiration for Victorian writers from the Brontë sisters to Edgar Allan Poe “Though she is lesser known outside academic circles lots of amazing scholarship has been undertaken to ensure Radcliffe is read into the future will continue to amplify the importance and brilliance of Radcliffe’s work.” Among those who are familiar with Radcliffe’s work she is often referred to as the ‘Mother of the Gothic’ however the Sheffield researchers feel that this association with motherhood isn’t quite right.  a PhD student at the University of Sheffield explains why she feels Radcliffe is the ‘Mistress of the Gothic’ Samiha said: “Radcliffe’s power and influence over the Gothic genre succeeded in labelling her as the mistress of the Gothic - her use of the sublime within her writing is just incredibly effective in creating terror and horror among readers other authors like Regina Maria Roche and Eliza Parsons gained immense popularity with readers of the Gothic.” To celebrate Women’s History Month, academics and students working on Radcliffe created a video exploring who Ann Radcliffe was and what made her works stand out is led by Michael Gamer and Angela Wright.  Project co-leads are Katrina O’Loughlin from Brunel University Deborah Russell from the University of York and Dale Townshend from Manchester Metropolitan University.  Editorial team members are Elizabeth Bobbitt from the University of York, Tom Duggett from Xi'an Jiaotong–Liverpool University, Robert Miles from the University of Victoria. one of the most impressive runs in history - and the stats back that assertion up While Radcliffe returned to London to set the women’s only world record (a record for a marathon where women run in a separate race from men) of 2:17:42 in 2005 it was her stunning 2003 run that is considered her greatest ever who broke Radcliffe’s women-only mark in 2017 with a time of 2:17:01 having twice been victorious in London in 2011 and 2012 even though she went on to win seven Majors in a glittering career this race was inarguably her biggest achievement The central defender immediately joins Crawley Calum McIntyre’s men made it six wins on the bounce and consolidated top spot in the National League North with a dominant display at Radcliffe Tom Peers bagged a brace and Declan Weeks rifled a low effort from distance into the bottom corner to claim all three points on a cold night in Greater Manchester Iwan Murray had the first sight of goal of the evening when he made use of good work from Tom Peers to find space but Murray’s low effort was pushed to safety by Mateusz Hewelt The hosts hit back with a pair of chances in quick succession though as Josh Hancock flicked a header wide before Tom Walker’s strike was palmed wide by shot-stopper Jimmy Storer Radcliffe’s number 17 had a golden chance just minutes later after great work from captain Jordan Hulme inside the Seals’ box but Walker’s miscued effort flew well wide of the post It was a scrappy contest at the Neuven Stadium as neither side could grab the initiative or force the other into a serious error Fin Roberts had a debut to remember on Saturday in the 4-2 victory over Scarborough Athletic but his first major involvement saw his 25-yard free kick fly over the wood work The Yellows took a narrow lead into the interval though just moments after fourth official Andy Sykes had announced that there was one minute of stoppage time at the end of the first 45 It was a dangerous corner from Declan Weeks that unlocked the home defence as his flighted delivery was headed into the bottom corner by Tom Peers in clinical fashion the 29-year-old’s 10th league goal of the campaign After a tight first period that was defined by a late moment of quality from the Seals Calum McIntyre’s men searched for a second goal in immediate fashion and thought they had found it on the hour mark Roberts and had an instant impact with a ball into Peers who managed to slide a low finish past Hewelt into the bottom corner the linesman deemed our number seven to have been played through in an offside position and the goal was chalked off as Declan Weeks added to his assist with a superb drilled effort that evaded the hands of Hewelt to nestle in the back off the home net who has been in fine form in our nine-game unbeaten run The Seals had settled in a brilliant flow after the break and the scoreline looked even better soon after as the Seals made it three in the 68th minute This time it was Peers once again who beat Hewelt at his near post after more creative work from the right foot of Weeks found Kev Roberts whose drilled cross caused havoc in the Radcliffe box Peers was there to power the ball past the outstretched hands of the shot-stopper to make it 3-0 and put the Seals in an ideal position to make it six wins on the spin Storer was called into his first action of the second half with less than 15 minutes left on the clock as he got down well to deny Luca Navarro’s low strike It was a comfortable end to the contest for the Seals who remained solid throughout and once again dazzled with some exceptional attacking play It is Chester first six-game streak of league victories since 2013 and the Blues have another away trip scheduled on Saturday as we travel to Peterborough Sports in search of a 7th win on the bounce and a 10th game unbeaten A week on from United’s latest victory over Southport in the National league North they would return to action by making the relatively short journey over to Greater Manchester where they would face the relegation threatened Radcliffe FC The last time that United met the Boro was back in November when a lack of goals resulted in a 0-0 stalemate however Scunthorpe were hoping to go a step further this afternoon as a win would further solidify their place in the hunt for promotion With regards to Andy Butler’s squad for the match there was to be no changes to the side that triumphed last time out at the Attis Arena with hopes that an identical line-up and bench could produce an equally professional performance When proceedings were finally set underway at the Neuven Stadium it became instantly apparent that the fixture was to be an intense battle as possession changed hands on multiple occasions With both sides attempting to figure each other out in the early exchanges it would be the Iron who tested their oppositions defence for the first time The fixture's opening chance would come from a free-kick that was positioned central to Mateusz Hewelt’s goal making it hard angle for Cal Roberts to score from Roberts stepped up to the plate and attempted to wrap an effort across Hewelt however as the shot arrowed towards the top corner it would ricochet back off the underside of the crossbar before being desperately hooked away by a Radcliffe defender Throughout the opening 20 minutes Scunthorpe would have the majority of promising attacks however it has to be said that it was the hosts who controlled the majority of possession up until Roberts turned the screw to spur United on towards the opening goal After Alfie Beestin failed to convert a chance from a promising position he would win a corner to push the Iron up the pitch From this set-play Roberts would play a neat short routine with Kian Scales to present him with an angle to cross Roberts’ delivery was pinpoint as Carlton Ubaezuonu parted the Radcliffe defence steaming onto the cross before powerfully nodding the ball beyond Hewelt to give Scunthorpe the lead Or so the travelling faithful thought as their celebrations would be cut short by the whistle of referee Chay Hathaway who pulled play back for a prior foul in the build-up With half-time approaching the Boro would create their best chance to open the scoring when talisman striker Jordan Hulme picked up the ball on the edge of the Scunthorpe penalty area and placed it into the path of midfielder George Glendon who attempted to place the ball into the top corner of Ross Fitzsimons’ goal however his side footed effort was always rising and cleared the crossbar from a good opportunity In what was the final opportunity of the first period United would attempt to break through the Radcliffe blockade with a swiftly constructed attack After Beestin did the hard work to release Ubaezuonu through the middle the Irishman opted to shift the ball into Roberts on the left with time and space to pull the trigger the winger attempted to drive the ball beyond the goalkeeper but the shot lacked execution as it soared wide of the mark Following the restart the Iron would go back to work trying to break down their strong-willed opponents and almost did so instantly when Ubaezuonu was played in behind with nothing but open space to explore As the inform striker carried on his marauding into the penalty area he set himself to pull the trigger but found the ball hooked away from him courtesy of a crucial recovery tackle from a Radcliffe defender As the half progressed both sides continued to play exceptionally well however couldn’t manage to break down their opposite defence and at that failed to create any chances of note resulting in the odds of the tie remaining a stalemate rise rapidly This would remain the theme of the second half until the 75th minute when the Polish shot stopper Hewelt would be called into action to rescue his side After a long hopeful ball into the box from Tyler Denton was expertly knocked down by Mark Beck This allowed possession to land at the feet of Roberts on the edge whose low driven volley was destined for the bottom corner if not for the intervention of the keeper who leapt to his right to deny the winger of a brilliant strike With the game at its death and United pushing toward an all-important winner they would leave themselves open to a Radcliffe counterattack down the right-flank After protecting the ball in the corner Defender Rick Smith managed to hang the ball up towards the far post with a brilliant cross that found the head of Matty Sargent in the penalty area as the Radcliffe man powered the ball past Fitzsimons to give his team the lead There would be no further twists to the tale in the minutes that followed as the Iron were condemned to a disappointing defeat in a game Despite the result Butler’s side still remain top of the National League North tree with four massive games remaining we use technologies like cookies to store and/or access device information Consenting to these cardinal has disclosed that he came close to being denounced at the Rome Synod on Synodality because of media reporting adding that he now believes the concept of reciprocity offers an “implicit key” to the Church’s future development reprinted during the Synod without my knowledge sparked an article in another periodical in which I was misrepresented as accusing African bishops of hypocrisy – although this was completely and totally untrue it almost led to my formal condemnation,” said Cardinal Timothy Radcliffe “The Synod was seeking a life-giving mutuality in which barriers fell and we were opened up to the fertility of the Holy Spirit But this was really difficult when many people viewed what was happening through the prism of the media which saw it as a clash between conservatives and progressives one of 21 installed by Pope Francis at a St Peter’s Basilica consistory on 7 December was addressing a conference on Monday evening at his native Blackfriars Hall in Oxford on “Synodality and the Culture of Encounter” He said some media commentators had played a helpful role at the three-year Synod although most had interpreted the debates in terms of an “unfruitful polarisation of tradition and progress” “We were trying to imagine a renewal of the Church liberated from clericalism… But this imaginative task was made yet more difficult by the cultural context of the Vatican – it was like trying to make ice cream in the Sahara.” a former English provincial and global Master of the Dominicans in 1992-2001 who was spiritual adviser to the Rome Synod added: “Instead of being constrained by fixed we flourish in reciprocity… We were not just talking to each other reciprocally rejuvenating old words and discovering new words which opened our minds and hearts to the Kingdom.” co-organised by the Jesuit Georgetown University was addressed by two Synod non-participants Prague University’s Mgr Tomas Halik and Georgetown’s Jose Casanova who faced criticism from other speakers for going too far in their advocacy of opening the Church to non-Christian faiths and ideologies It included a panel discussion by Synod experts: Sister Birgit Weiler from Peru’s Pontifical Catholic University director of Georgetown’s Initiative on Catholic Social Thought and Public Life director of Minnesota’s Springtide Research Institute Durham-based chair of the Centre for Catholic Social Thought and Practice Professor Rowlands said she regretted the Synod’s Final Document had not discussed disability and “anthropological questions around sexuality” as well as ideological differences in the Church and the “poor quality of relations” between theologians and bishops’ conferences that she had personally read every grassroots report sent to the Synod secretariat and was confident the three-year process had successfully built on the First and Second Vatican Councils with a renewed “communal dimension of being the Church” which now required multiple follow-up efforts Cardinal Radcliffe said the Synod’s “radical and exciting challenge” had lain in “embracing the plurality of cultures of our global Church” and offering new models of encounter to a multipolar “post-Western world” increasingly divided by “mutual incomprehension and increasing violence and poverty” could only be fully understood by those who experienced it but said the “language of ministries” had also opened up new ways of understanding “the reciprocity of roles to be exercised by the whole people of God” we need language which is always being renewed by reciprocity,” Cardinal Radcliffe said with and for each other… The bishop and priest have the ministry of unity but cannot exercise this unless their own identity is stretched open by the people of God Bishops'
