A 19-year-old Calum Chambers makes his Arsenal debut at centre-back in a 3-0 victory over Manchester City to win the Community Shield protected by 22-year-old Jack Wilshere and 24-year-old Aaron Ramsey The day the future moved beyond the rear view mirror as 30-year-old Chambers is shown a straight red card after 16 minutes and has to solemnly trudge past those same two former team-mates It is poetic that the careers of Wilshere and Ramsey came full circle in what felt like an East Anglian time warp It marked 17 years since their paths first intertwined when they made their Arsenal debuts within two minutes of each other during a 4-0 win over Blackburn Rovers in September 2008 They went on to play together 101 times over a decade at Arsenal and appeared in consecutive FA Cup final victories together in 2014 and 2015 — last month they were appointed as interim head coaches of Norwich City and Cardiff City Judging by how they beamed about their dugout experience after Norwich’s 4-2 win over Cardiff in a narrative timing only football can produce the coaching bug bit them strongly on the same day Norwich against Cardiff — the home side eight places below the play-offs and the visitors already consigned to League One — was the biggest dead rubber going on the final day of the Championship season But this game carried meaning for the two men on the touchline and could be what spawns the next two Wenger disciples after Mikel Arteta who was the other man in midfield at Wembley in 2014 this was his second and last audition to lay a claim for the permanent job at Norwich in front of sporting director Ben Knapper who brought him to the club as first-team coach in October after working with him at Arsenal as loans manager That is why Wilshere was animated on the touchline barking at his players to continue pressing even when ahead It felt like he wanted a statement win to underline his credentials after Johannes Hoff Thorup was sacked after a year in charge Come the Norwich squad’s lap of honour at full time sections of Carrow Road were signing “Wilshere’s at the wheel” after taking four points from his two games who has been club captain since returning to his boyhood club in 2023 the game had appeared to be more about pride and attempting to end his three-game reign in charge unbeaten than personal ambition The romantic swansong at the club where his career started has not gone to plan but he ruled out the prospect of being a player-manager and stated his focus was on recovering from injury Norwich were 3-0 up and had hit the woodwork twice All this despite Cardiff having the first three shots of the game and Ramsey applauding with his arms above his head at some of the build-up play his side had produced Cardiff’s 10 men started plodding like they had been playing for 23 years Ramsey has not done his coaching badges yet but he remained a picture of calm on the sidelines some of whom came dressed as bananas and hot dogs decided that the only way to salvage the nine-hour round trip was to employ gallows humour and wildly celebrate their team conceding and fire beach balls in the air Ramsey managed to rally his team to win the second half and after leading his players over to the far corner “I have loved every minute of it,” Ramsey said There are no guarantees either way but I’ve enjoyed it and I see myself out there in the future.” Ramsey believed that he had “reconnected” the fans with the team and given them something they can buy into for next season Ramsey’s straight batting gradually loosened and when asked if he wants to be the man who brings his club back up “I feel a responsibility to try to align everyone again I’m a fan as well and I realise exactly the things that they have been going through and the questions they have But I am definitely open to grabbing this and realigning everything He is still the captain of club and country but has made six Championship starts this season It has been a common tale since leaving Arsenal in the summer of 2019 as he has played only 7,172 minutes — the equivalent of just 80 full games His free transfer to Juventus was interrupted by injuries a six-month loan at Rangers ended with him missing the decisive penalty in the Europa League final shootout while his single season in France with Nice and two seasons back at Cardiff have been littered by injuries Having seen Gareth Bale retire two years ago and Swansea City midfielder Joe Allen announce his retirement on Friday at 35 does he have the hunger to keep coming back “I had the operation to repair my hamstring but I needed that regardless,” he said There are a lot of variables between now and being at the World Cup so that is going to be taken into consideration as well It’s all I’ve ever known but having this little couple of weeks doing this and seeing the impact has given me something to consider.” There is no better person to empathise with injury struggles how difficult it is to end a playing career sooner than planned or what it is like to transition into coaching than Wilshere Persistent ankle and muscle injuries meant he made just 51 appearances in his final four seasons before he was forced to retire in July 2022 at the age of just 30 “It is tough because it is all you know,” said Wilshere who took up a role as Arsenal’s under-18 coach days after and helped develop Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri it happened over a two-year period and I was trying to hold on a little bit more when I knew my ankle wasn’t in a good place “I know Aaron has picked up an injury now and muscle injuries in the past and I know Aaron has got it as he wouldn’t have had the career he’s had if he didn’t is the hunger to try to learn something different like coaching and how to do it “I remember the first six or seven months at Arsenal It was like 13 and 14-hour days just trying to sit back and work everything out “Aaron’s journey might be different where he has to step straight into the first team but he will develop a lot because of his mentality.” Wilshere said he was aware of not allowing it to become all about the sub-plot on the touchline Onel Hernandez and Jacob Sorensen were playing their final game for the club after a combined 489 appearances nor engage in anything more than a standard handshake before kick-off with Ramsey The sartorial stakes were high but it may have been a score draw with Wilshere’s choice of light-grey hybrid of tracksuit and chino competing with Ramsey’s more relaxed navy and grey T-shirt look which confirmed that he is definitely still on a player’s diet “I saw him when we met the ref before the game and that was a strange moment,” Wilshere laughed “His head must be all over the place but he looked comfortable on the side I know it didn’t quite work out the way they want but he got a reaction “Even if Aaron goes on to play next season this little spell will help him massively when he does go into coaching I’ve got massive respect for him for taking this on.” Wilshere is not sure what the process of appointment a permanent manager will be but he has spent the last two years assembling a future backroom staff for when he did become a No 1 an ambition he made clear to Norwich when he arrived six months ago I need a few days to take a breath — it’s been intense,” said Wilshere “Chucking a marathon (Wilshere ran in London) in the middle of that probably didn’t help things “It’s happened sooner than I would have thought but I didn’t want to take that step into first-team football until I thought I was ready to make an impact I’ve been a player and when you’re not quite sure about a coach or he’s not quite confident enough to learn how to coach because it’s a completely different skill and try and develop my way of playing I feel like I’m ready to make an impact at this level.” Having endured deep lows with Ramsey’s horrific leg break and Wilshere’s chronic ankle problems the pair could have fallen out of love with the game Wilshere accepted time was up three years ago Ramsey may yet defy Father Time for another year or so if he believes he can captain Wales to the 2026 World Cup in the US It is up to Norwich and Cardiff whether they want to ignite their managerial careers The young British actor is brilliant in the hit post-apocalyptic drama, but some have claimed they’re an odd fit for the character of jaded teen survivalist Ellie. That might be the case, writes Louis Chilton – but I would like to be emailed about offers, events and updates from The Independent. Read our Privacy notice it was a surprise – a commendably left-field choice in defiance of many fans braying for more established actors would subsequently join the series as her emergent nemesis.) Over the course of the first season Ramsey won over all but the most virulent doubters and no small amount of depth to the role of 14-year-old apocalypse survivor Ellie This has never, to date, been more evident than in the fourth episode of The Last of Us’s second season, which premiered last night. At this point, Ellie, grieving the death of her father figure Joel (Pedro Pascal), has set out to avenge his murder, with another young woman, Dina (Isabela Merced) in tow. Where Ellie’s brief Joel-less plotline in season one had a kind of unmoored, child-in-peril urgency to it, now she exists in a world of adult independence and responsibilities. As if to hammer this home, the episode ends with Dina revealing to Ellie that she’s pregnant. “Holy s***,” Ellie says. “I’m gonna be a dad.” It’s a neat and memorable line of dialogue – with the switching of gender making explicit the echoes of Ellie’s own pseudo-parental relationship with Joel. But it’s striking how young Ellie seems in this scene, how strange it seems to hear words like this emerge from her mouth. In other words, Ramsey’s performance in the series isn’t a failure of casting – but the criticisms of it speak to a failure of interpretation. It’s facile to ask whether Ramsey was miscast. Better to ask just who, exactly, they were cast as. And the answer to that question is still unfolding. Music is a crucial link between Ellie and Joel (Pedro Pascal) in The Last of Us, in life and after his death Joel gave Ellie the butterfly-necked guitar and was restringing it for her before he died The song Ellie picks to play is the same one as in The Last of Us Part II when you play the chords yourself (this feature of the second game is a polarising one) Ramsey performs the song in the show in much the same style as Johnson does in the game with both scenes showing Dina listening with shining eyes to Ellie's rendition Ellie actually starts to play Pearl Jam's "Future Days" a song Joel plays to Ellie at the beginning of The Last of Us Part II when he gives her a guitar and a song that's become synonymous with the franchise for fans The thing is, you could completely miss this cutscene in the game if you don't investigate the guitar room. It's not part of the main storyline, but instead it's more of a private side moment for Ellie, who is still grieving the loss of her guitar-teaching father Joel who is becoming more aware of her feelings for Ellie — you try watching someone you might like playing music live and not falling head over heels But it's particularly poignant because of A-ha's lyrics which match The Last of Us' glimmer of hope for our protagonist "Needless to say / I'm odds and ends / But I'll be stumblin' away / Slowly learnin' that life is OK." Watching The Last of Us and want to play the games? Here's how NFL Network Insider Mike Garafolo reporting the Miami Dolphins and cornerback Jalen Ramsey mutually agree to explore a trade The 2025 NFL Draft has come and gone, and Jalen Ramsey remains a Miami Dolphin. With several possible landing spots for the veteran corner still available a reunion with the Los Angeles Rams isn't off the table "There's not too much of an update," McVay said, via Rams Wire. "He is a total stud obviously he has continued to play at a really high level He and I have kept in great touch even since we ended up trading him to Miami "There are a lot of layers when you're talking about a player of his caliber with regards to the contract the compensation that they would be looking for in exchange for receiving a player of his magnitude but we're never going to shy away from opportunities to increase the competitiveness of our roster or add great players as long as it fits within the framework of everything that an acquisition like that would entail." didn't use a pick on a corner during the 2025 NFL Draft there is little rush to get a deal done at this stage -- waiting until after June 1 would allow Miami to split some of the cap hit The big question in moving Ramsey will be how much money the Dolphins will have to eat in a deal and what the draft compensation will look like The Baltimore Ravens on Monday released veteran kicker Justin Tucker who currently is the subject of an NFL investigation into allegations of improper conduct during massage therapy sessions Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams finalized terms on a pact that pays the Super Bowl-winning quarterback $44 million for the 2025 season NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Monday NFL.com keeps you up to date with all of the latest league news from around the NFL Visit NFL.com's transaction hub for a daily breakdown Julian Edelman's place in Patriots history will be officially immortalized in 2025 The longtime New England receiver has been voted into the Patriots' Hall of Fame by fans as its 37th inductee Cleveland Browns linebacker Devin Bush was arrested Sunday on simple assault and harassment charges in Pennsylvania The 26-year old was arrested in Bell Acres in Allegheny County Seattle Seahawks third-round quarterback Jalen Milroe entered the NFL with an enticing athletic profile but lingering questions about his accuracy as a passer It's something the rookie is already out to correct The Baltimore Ravens drafted kicker Tyler Loop in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft Longtime kicker Justin Tucker is under investigation for potential improper conduct Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Zac Robinson said that he believes the time is right for tight end Kyle Pitts to see significant growth in 2025 after three years of struggles followed a historic rookie season Los Angeles Chargers rookie running back Omarion Hampton believes he can create "dominant duo backfield" with veteran RB Najee Harris Los Angeles Rams running back Kyren Williams has made quite the impact for his team already in his short career recording back-to-back seasons of 1,100-plus yards and a total of 26 touchdowns the last two years is still available and likely headed for a one-year Fans must be weary of this report because that likely increases the compensation in order to acquire Ramsey On the surface a reunion between the Rams and Ramsey make sense. LA renewed their vows with Matthew Stafford for seemingly a two-year run at the Super Bowl Ramsey is better-suited to play for a team that is set to win now given that he’s into the late stages of his career But are there better alternatives for the Rams than to bring back a player they have already moved on from previously Should they throw nostalgia out the window and blaze a new path forward at the corner position Ahead of free agency I wrote that Samuel fits LA’s corner profile based on his size and ball skills He’s obviously a much different player than Ramsey and won’t contribute in run defense—something Ramsey still does at a high level Ramsey is on the wrong side of age 30 and seems discontent with his contract and compensation on a nearly annual basis It’s fair to say that production equals tolerance; however Ramsey could quickly wear out his welcome should decline set in Perhaps the smarter bet would be to sign the age 25 corner and former second round pick. Injuries aside, Samuel also fell out of favor with the Los Angeles Chargers during the regime shift to Jim Harbaugh and Jesse Minter zone corners who aren’t always eager tacklers That’s less of a concern for the other LA team as nearly every individual in the Rams’ corner room are of similar stature and are more adept in zone than man Would Ramsey help the Rams win more games in 2025 than Samuel To me the evaluation comes down to one key question: Is it better to trade away future draft compensation for a corner on the wrong side of 30 whose best days are behind him rather than to sign a relatively young free agent on a one-year deal but likely has nowhere near the upside that trading for Ramsey does The Miami Dolphins did not trade star cornerback Jalen Ramsey during the 2025 NFL Draft but that doesn’t mean a move won’t happen before the start of the regular season Once considered to be among the game’s elite players Ramsey has slowed down a bit in his later years but remains an above-average starter the seven-time Pro Bowler finished the season with two interceptions the 10th-best mark out of 116 eligible players “Although Baltimore’s CB room might seem crowded if there’s any team that consistently kicks the tires on known veterans looking to chase a ring but adding Ramsey would fit with the franchise’s tendency to welcome in proven players who have the change to make an instant impact.” As mentioned above, the Baltimore Ravens have plenty of cornerback depth and aren’t the obvious choice for a Jalen Ramsey trade. Veteran Marlon Humphrey had a strong 2024, finishing the year as PFF’s seventh-best cornerback. First-round pick Nate Wiggins started off slow but finished the year on a high note and looks like a longtime fixture for this defense This secondary is good enough to beat most teams but an elite contender like Baltimore could use a third lockdown guy like Ramsey The Ravens share a division with Joe Burrow’s Cincinnati Bengals and must defeat them and the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills to reach the Super Bowl Stopping three elite passing attacks isn’t easy and a Jalen Ramsey trade could be the difference in winning those competitive contests With Humphrey in the slot and Ramsey and Wiggins blanketing the outside opposing quarterbacks won’t be able to find any open targets a Jalen Ramsey trade will come with its own financial hurdles The cornerback currently carries a $16.6 million cap hit but Miami will take on $25.2 million in dead money if they deal him before June 1st they can spread his dead money over multiple seasons and lower his dead cap to just $6.75 million in 2025 would be responsible for the remaining $9.91 million Ramsey is technically under contract until 2028 but he doesn’t have any guaranteed money beyond the 2025 season This means he’s essentially playing on a one-year deal and the cornerback will probably want a revised contract following his trade If the Ravens aren’t amenable to this it could sink a potential deal before it ever begins Main Photo: Vincent Carchietta – Imagn Images The Miami Dolphins UDFA class includes several talented players who have a real shot at making the Dolphins final 53-man roster The Los Angeles Rams have had success with UDFA signings in the past and this year’s class of Rams UDFAs has several promising prospects the Cleveland Browns might not have a choice The rebuilding Cleveland Browns could either cut or trade this former Pro Bowler before the 2025 season begins Laxey and Douglas were called out to reports of a kitchen fire at a property in Marine Gardens Officers were dispatched at 12.45pm and discovered that burnt food had caused some minor smoke logging within the property The grill was removed outside and a positive pressure fan then used to remove the residual smoke Crews were in attendance for approximately 20 minutes Manx Care says Grove Mount Dental Practice has returned its NHS contract and so ceased providing NHS dentistry to patients registered at the practice as of Monday Manx Care says it's trying to find a new provider for the north but any patient who needs emergency dentistry can contact the Community Dental Service on 642785 it says you can use the Emergency Dental Clinic - and starting to discover that the WLF may be a tad bigger and more dangerous than they previously anticipated - the pair hide out in an old music shop Ellie heads upstairs and finds the holy grail - an intact guitar Dina comes to join her when she hears Ellie tuning the instrument and what follows is perhaps Ramsey's best - yet most understated - moment in the series so far In a scene taken straight out of the game she performs a captivating rendition of Take on Me Far from the synth-pop sound of A-ha's original Ellie's acoustic cover is a haunting and emotional rendering Of course, the guitar is a connection to Joel (Pedro Pascal) who taught Ellie how to play the instrument during their years in Jackson Joel plays Pearl Jam's Future Days to Ellie in an emotional moment that clearly shows his love for her without him having to say it with the guitar being one of her last connections to him Ellie playing for Dina also clearly echoes that moment which only becomes all the more meaningful when the pair admit their feelings for each other later in the episode Dina is the person that Ellie trusts most - and she's going to have to go through hell and back to make sure she doesn't lose her too Take on Me in itself hearkens back to Ellie's best friend, Riley (played in the show by Storm Reid last season) whose death all but stole the last of Ellie's innocence As A-ha's upbeat hit played in the background Riley showed Ellie around an abandoned mall with Ellie left in wonder at things like escalators and arcade machines with both girls bitten and Ellie having to shoot her best friend as she succumbed to the infection while Ellie discovered in the worst way possible that she's immune Ellie is still clearly scarred from Riley's death as she hinted to Dina earlier in the season when she told her that the story of the first person she killed is \"too f**ked up\" to talk about the Take on Me moment represents everything that Ellie's lost most clearly making those connections to Joel and Riley but also showing that she still has a chance for love Ramsey has showed us so many different sides to Ellie - from depicting her being distrustful of Joel in season 1 and then slowly letting down her guard down to the unfiltered rage and undiluted fury we've seen in the last few episodes following his death Ramsey shows us something completely different - a vulnerability we don't often see from the character combined with a sense of hope for the future even when you consider everything she's lost Ashley Johnson, who voiced Ellie in the games (and who played Ellie's mum in season 1 of the show) was also rightfully praised for her rendition of the song in the game which is only an optional moment for players (although many understandably make sure they don't miss it due to it being such a powerful scene) they evoke the same feelings of love and loss brilliantly showing Ellie's vulnerability and allowing us to take a breath and focus on the human story at play in the story Because that's what's so brilliant about The Last of Us - Happy Proud Rainbow TownByErik Kain Forbes contributors publish independent expert analyses and insights entertainment & culture.Follow AuthorMay 04 Season 2 of The Last Of Us has been a bit of a mixed bag so far with some really gripping moments and some odd choices that got the season off to a wobbly start I’m pleased to say that it’s finally found its footing in the fourth episode I’ve had many complaints about the casting in this show and like many others have worried about Bella Ramsey’s ability to play an older The Season 2 premiere really had me worried though I still blame odd writing choices more than Ramsey reckless and obnoxious teenager rather than the older version of the character she ought to be by now it appears the writers were doing exactly what I suspected: Making Ellie act that way so that her change following Joel’s death would be more obvious I still think we could have done without that degree of contrast but at least we’ve gotten to a point where the show’s version of Ellie is more in line with the game the show is based on The scene that really won me over this episode is taken straight from the game Ellie finds a guitar in a music shop that her and Dina come to tunes it up and begins playing Take On Me by a-ha Dina’s reaction – at first happily listening in before wiping away tears – really nailed the tone down I’ve often described the video game as overly bleak but I sometimes forget that it also had these really terrific character moments Little pockets of beauty to give us a breather from all the horror and one thing I’ve really enjoyed about this season compared to the first is the doubling-down on the sheer number of infected our heroes encounter The Battle Of Jackson certainly had plenty intense scene in the Seattle subway as Ellie and Dina run first from the Wolves and then from a horde of zombies Ellie ends up saving Dina as they try to push through a jammed turnstyle by thrusting her arm into an infected’s mouth having never revealed her immunity to Dina this leads to some tense moments where it looks as though Dina might shoot her on the spot Ellie is forced to tell her the truth at this point and when Dina has no choice but to accept it she makes her own confession: She’s pregnant with Jesse’s baby She was throwing up a lot and it was pretty obvious that she found a pregnancy test at the beginning of the episode Ellie is understandably worried about her and tells her she doesn’t have to come with her to find Abby The two end up making out after these revelations I found this a bit awkward only because Ramsey still looks like she’s fourteen it’s nice to see these two find some happiness and release in such dire straits The Wolves and the Scars are killing each other left and right as the two ride through Seattle they notice some rainbow flags “Why are there so many rainbows?” Dina asks since neither of them know the LGBTQ symbolism they represent when they find a bunch of dead FEDRA soldiers Ellie quips: “So much for happy proud town.” I got a good chuckle out of that This is a show that very much needs all the comic relief it can scrape together the factions are also what bother me the most right now They were a rebel force fighting against FEDRA earlier in the apocalypse and in many ways they’ve become the very thing they once hated Isaac – played by Westworld alum Jeffrey Wright – who was once a FEDRA commander until he turned on his own men we see him torturing and interrogating a Scar fanatic burning his flesh away with hot copper pans because Wolves are joining the Seraphite cult every day They fight with knives and bows and arrows They don’t use electricity or modern technology if you go up against a force with machine guns you’re going to lose History is littered with such confrontations the war provides some extra layers of conflict for our heroes to navigate as they search for Abby Speaking of Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) we still haven’t seen her or her pals since Episode 2 The big question I have is whether we’ll see her at all until the finale and whether that means Season 3 will follow the same route as the video game That seems more and more likely given the time we have left in the season this was a very strong episode which definitely helped deepen the chemistry and dynamic between the two main characters and gave us some really great zombie action (I know they’re not actually zombies but they may as well be) The musical moment was by far my favorite and gives me hope that other big musical bits from the game will appear later on in flashbacks Here’s my video review: There were 1,242 Bluebirds in the away end with Ramsey beginning by praising their support “They’ve been unbelievable and I think they’ve really bought into the boys over the last few weeks and the performances that they’ve produced.  It’s a lot of effort for them to come up here today and support us We appreciate every single one of them doing that and making that journey.  "Thank you again to them and they’re going to be a huge part of us bouncing back as a Club." City fought back in the contest with two goals from Yousef Salech who ends the campaign with nine goals for the Bluebirds “I was really happy with the way we started the game," Aaron continued caused them a few problems and had chances but then there’s the sending off and these things happen it’s about trying to readjust and sort things out pressed their 10s better and had a threat on the counter-attack as well For them to take on all the information that we wanted them to it speaks volumes about how far we’ve come in a few weeks.  "When you’re 3-1 down and you have seven players in their box all sprinting back to clear danger or make an interception that’s the culture and the habits you need if you’re going to be a serious team and bounce back.  “The message at half-time was that we go on and try and win this half They’re a good team and they have some really good players "For us to produce a performance like that with ten men U21 defender Ronan Kpakio earned his first league start for City while there were also league debuts for Dylan Lawlor and Tanatswa Nyakuhwa Aaron concluded: “The Academy has so many talented players and it’s about creating that pathway again I thought every one of them were superb.  "Some of them looked like they had been there doing it for ages so it’s a very proud day for them and it’s just a glimpse of the players we have in store and available next season.” Watch more from Aaron on Cardiff City TV. Designed & built by Other Media Getty ImagesPublished1 May 2025Aaron Ramsey says he would like to be a manager in the future - but does not believe it is possible to combine the job with playing The Wales captain will sign off as Cardiff City's caretaker boss at Norwich City on Saturday having been put in charge for the final three games of the Championship season Ramsey was unable to prevent the Bluebirds from dropping into League One their relegation being confirmed as a result of last weekend's goalless draw with West Bromwich Albion The 34-year-old says he has enjoyed his brief spell in charge, but has already distanced himself from taking the job full-time as he targets a return to playing with the 2026 World Cup in mind And he is lukewarm about the idea of being a player-manager "I've really enjoyed the last couple of weeks," he said "That's been evident in the way the players have performed "One day I would like to be in this position [but] I don't think you can do the both [playing and managing] My full focus is on Norwich for now." Ramsey was asked whether he would ideally need to be playing at a higher level than League One in order to achieve his ambition of playing at the World Cup with Wales I don't know what's going to happen," said Ramsey "At the moment I'm still in the early stages of rehab [from the hamstring injury] and I'm going to carry on with that "Even to go and play golf again I'm going to have to do this rehab to make sure I get my hamstring in a way it can function." Ramsey says he is looking forward to having the chance to reflect fully on his time in charge and provide feedback to club bosses as they search for the next permanent manager "I haven't really had time to digest it all," said Ramsey who is hoping to end his spell in charge with a win at Carrow Road after picking up two draws "Then it'll all hit home - what we've done what we've managed to get out of the players and I've been in here as a manager for a couple of weeks "I can give a fair assessment of everything really." 29 CommentsAaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere made their Premier League debuts two minutes apart in 2008; a 17 and 16-year-old coming on as substitutes for Arsenal in a 4-0 win at Blackburn Rovers the two men will be reunited in opposing dugouts as fledgling coaches Wales captain Ramsey will be taking charge of Cardiff City for the third – and seemingly final – time when the already-relegated Bluebirds visit Norwich City in the Championship The 34-year-old is still registered as a Bluebirds player but was handed the reins on a temporary basis after Omer Riza was sacked last month the former England midfielder has already retired and has stepped in as Norwich's interim boss following the dismissal of Johannes Hoff Thorup after the Canaries missed out on the play-offs Although Ramsey harbours long-term coaching ambitions though his Cardiff contract expires this summer the former Juventus midfielder is looking forward to being reunited with Wilshere his former central midfield partner at Arsenal "I've been watching Jack's career in the managerial role develop over the years starting with the [Arsenal] Under-18s and going there [Norwich] as a coach and now having that opportunity [to manage]," said Ramsey "So it will be a bit mad but I'm looking forward to seeing him again." 'Wrong to say I don't care' - Cardiff owner Tan Both players spent the majority of their playing careers at Arsenal with Ramsey joining from Cardiff in 2008 and Wilshere graduating from the club's academy Wilshere's manager throughout his time with the Gunners was the great Arsene Wenger while Ramsey only had one year without the Frenchman who left in 2018 after more than two decades at the helm As well as winning three Premier League titles and seven FA Cups Wenger earned legendary status for his aesthetically pleasing style of play as well as his visionary coaching methods which were regarded as revolutionary for British football Wenger was also revered for his ability to develop young players with Ramsey and Wilshere among the most successful examples of his tutelage "I think what Arsene instilled in us is having that freedom to go and express ourselves having that sense of confidence from him to go out there and to do that," said Ramsey "That's something that I'll take throughout my managerial career is giving the players the confidence to go out there and express themselves "It's why we all fell in love with football is to go out there and enjoy it and to score goals that will be something that I take forward." The Canaries head into the final day sitting 14th in the table having recorded a goalless draw at Middlesbrough last time out but what I do know is that they have a quality team with really good individuals," Aaron added but one that I’m really looking forward to I haven’t really had a lot of time to digest the last week “We need everyone to get behind this Club now and for us all to pull in the same direction “For them to stay there for the whole game and the amount of fans we had We’re going to have to get out of this together New boss must 'galvanise' Cardiff - Ramsey Interim manager Aaron Ramsey has urged Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan to "quickly" appoint a new manager to give fans "clarity" after the club's relegation to League One Ramsey says the new boss needs to be someone who can "grab and galvanise" the club so that supporters can "buy in" to the future of the Welsh side The 34-year-old, who has taken charge of City's last two matches after Omer Riza's departure, has played down his own chances of taking the job and has openly stated that his short-term plans are to return to playing and recovering from a hamstring injury it's important to get somebody in with the right staff around them that's the first thing and then you can go from there and add layers to that," Ramsey said Players need clarity and then you can build from there really "We need everybody to get right behind this club now and for us all to pull in the same direction for us to get out of this and you need somebody who's going to grab the club and galvanise that "What's important now is that the manager create an identity that the fans can buy into again and can get right behind That's the first step and putting that in place "It needs to be done relatively quickly really so there's clarity Players coming and going need to understand the situation because the longer you leave it you're eating into your pre-season time and your time working together as a team and that has a knock-on effect into the season as well "My door is always open and if they want it "But the main thing is everybody coming together and wanting the best for this football club." 'Big changes needed' as Cardiff owner Tan blasted Ramsey says Tan hasn't been present at Cardiff games as much as fans would like but insists the Malaysian billionaire "does care" about the club The Cardiff City Supporters Trust issued a statement criticising Tan's "minimal and infrequent" attendance at matches But Tan issued his own statement in response stating that he watches all matches - something backed up by Ramsey it's evident that he does care," added the Wales international "What we can all agree with is that this season has not been good enough Things need to be put in place in order to bounce back from this "I've had a few conversations with him throughout the few years that I've been here and they've all been pretty much similar "He's not been around probably as much as the fans would want but from the conversations that I've had with him I know he's invested in the club and watches the games and wants the best for this club "It's just trying to relate that and get it all put into action because you haven't got someone here day to day being amongst the place "Somebody has to try and link it all that together and put the things in place that this club needs." Wales captain Aaron Ramsey is the third man to manage Cardiff City this season this draw felt like the point of no return for Cardiff City This was not how Aaron Ramsey would have dreamt his first game in charge of his boyhood club teetering on the brink of relegation from the Championship Yet this was still a moment to savour for the Wales captain The sight of Ramsey strolling along the touchline during the match against Oxford United will have felt surreal for many of those watching from the stands at Cardiff City Stadium some of whom would have been at Ninian Park when a 16-year-old Ramsey played his first game for the club on another sun-dappled April afternoon in 2007 Ramsey had left Cardiff as a boy and come back a man Between his 2008 move to Arsenal and celebrated return to the Welsh capital two years ago starred in the Premier League and played a leading role in a golden era for Wales As Cardiff's caretaker manager applauded the supporters before kick-off on Monday The warmth of the atmosphere inside Cardiff City Stadium was at odds with the mood outside beforehand where fans gathered to protest against the club's owner Vincent Tan and the board Given the team's perilous position in the Championship table and the chronic antipathy from supporters towards the club's hierarchy the match against Oxford had all the makings of an afternoon of pure toxicity Cardiff - for years ravaged by division and discord - had a rare unifying force To put the 34-year-old in charge for the final three games of the season was undoubtedly a roll of the dice; a desperate measure from a board that has perpetually fumbled from one crisis to another it felt like neither party had much to lose Troubled Cardiff held by Oxford in Ramsey's first game still registered as a player and with no coaching experience there was a chance to enhance his hero status by inspiring an improbable escape act it was relatively risk-free for his reputation because too much damage had already been done to lay any of the blame for relegation on him chairman Mehmet Dalman and chief executive Ken Choo The final stages of previous manager Omer Riza's reign had deepened the wounds that have hurt this club in recent years particularly its ever-worsening disconnect with its supporters the guiding principle for Ramsey's appointment was simply: Why not Cardiff could only improve on the dismal end to Riza's tenure and that is precisely what they did under Ramsey With only a day to prepare for the Oxford game he had assembled a new coaching team and instilled in his side an intensity and purpose that had been lacking under his predecessor A conversation with Wales manager Craig Bellamy helped and Bellamy's influence was clear not only in the way Ramsey had set up his team but in the way he talked about the game afterwards "I spoke to Bellers (Craig Bellamy) quite a bit He's helped me out quite a lot in that 24 "We didn't have a lot of time to work on tactical things so I didn't want to overload the players with too much information but it was more about trying to get your principles across and habits." Ramsey needed to lean on people he could trust as well as those he rated He brought in his great friend and former Wales team-mate Chris Gunter alongside Cardiff club captain Joe Ralls – like Ramsey currently out injured – and Wales' Ryland Morgans as his assistant coaches it was Gunter who Ramsey turned to for a hug and some words of encouragement Having come through the youth ranks at Cardiff Ramsey and Gunter had been inseparable as Wales room-mates and north London neighbours with the former's move to Arsenal coming just a few months after the latter's transfer to Tottenham Hotspur responsible for the team they supported as boys Cardiff City fans protested against the club's owner Vincent Tan and board for the second time this season While Gunter and Ralls took the players through their pre-match training drills some of the chatter in the stands turned to weighty issues as fans waited for Ramsey to appear Would he be in a club tracksuit like Gunter and Ralls He might even be tempted with the long puffer coat once favoured by his former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger The answer was a black long sleeve polo shirt and black slacks with dark leather trainers; the kind of casual look Pep Guardiola is partial to at Manchester City With sleeves rolled up and hands in his pockets Ramsey had the same air of calm confidence he has carried throughout his playing career loudly encouraging his players and geeing up the crowd Ramsey was delighted with what he saw from his players who controlled the game and deservedly led through Yousef Salech's second-half header only for Oxford to equalise with their only shot on target – an unstoppable long-range strike by Cameron Brannagan With results elsewhere going against Cardiff they are now second from bottom of the table and three points adrift of safety with only two games left If Ramsey was to pull them out of the fire from here Even if Cardiff are relegated – as many fans seem to have accepted as inevitable – nobody will blame Ramsey He inherited an unenviable situation and has precious little time to turn it around the 86-cap Wales midfielder wants to continue playing and with his Bluebirds contract expiring this summer Should Ramsey return to the touchline with his beloved club beyond this season 21 CommentsAaron Ramsey was "proud" of Cardiff City's first performance under his management despite their damaging draw with relegation rivals Oxford United – but insists this is only a temporary role as he targets a return to playing had already been ruled out for the rest of the season with a hamstring injury when he became the third man to manage Cardiff this season after Omer Riza was sacked on Saturday Monday's 1-1 draw at home to Oxford in his first game in charge means the Bluebirds are second from bottom in the Championship three points adrift of safety with only two games left Ramsey's playing contract expires at the end of this season and he was coy about his long-term future when he was asked if he might become Cardiff manager permanently "I am just taking these three games," he said "I'm still recovering from a hamstring operation I'm still in the middle of rehab and I'm focused on getting back to full fitness "This is a role where it's going to be an intense 10 days now then I can relax and get back into my rehab "We have got to win the next game and hopefully we take it into the last game but we can only control what we can control and take it into the last game Cardiff sack Riza as Wales' Ramsey takes charge Cardiff are in desperate need of victory when they host West Bromwich Albion on Saturday after their relegation rivals won on Monday Ramsey became the third man to manage the Bluebirds this season one that began with Erol Bulut at the helm before he was sacked last September Despite only having one day to work with his players Ramsey oversaw a marked improvement in performance and Cardiff were unfortunate not to win as Oxford scored with their only shot on target – a thunderbolt from Cameron Brannagan The result was a heavy blow to the Welsh club's hopes of staying up but managing his boyhood club was something to cherish for Ramsey who had his close friend and former Wales team-mate Chris Gunter part of his coaching team with Cardiff captain Joe Ralls To do it with Gunts and Joe was really special," said Ramsey "This club means a lot to me and I felt like I could get a reaction it can sometimes take a worldie from 35 yards We can be really proud of what we've done over the last 24 hours." making this a daunting first managerial job for Ramsey He has no frontline coaching experience but has harboured managerial ambitions for some time having been tipped by Wales boss Craig Bellamy as someone who could work at a high level at the end of his playing career "I spoke to Bellers [Bellamy] quite a bit "The FAW [Football Association of Wales] have been brilliant Very supportive and I'm thankful for that it's completely different drafted in to assist Bulut last summer - was initially appointed on a caretaker basis before being handed a contract until the end of the season in December after an upturn in form he has come under increasing pressure with Cardiff unable to pull away from trouble It is believed some of the club hierarchy had considered a change last month - with former manager Neil Warnock considered as a replacement - only for Riza to retain the support of owner Vincent Tan But with fans calling for Riza to be removed after Friday's 2-0 loss at Bramall Lane – their fifth game without a win - the club have taken action in a late bid to avoid dropping into the third tier for the first time since 2002 Cardiff will hope the appointment of Ramsey - one of the club's most decorated youth products - they had also been the star of the CBBC series The Worst Witch and appeared in the BBC/HBO adaptation of His Dark Materials About 40 million people watched the first episode in 2023 and the series became the most popular HBO show ever in Europe the odd-couple chemistry between Ramsey’s Ellie and Pedro Pascal’s Joel has attracted an obsessive fanbase far beyond video-game nerds I go out in my ripped T-shirt that needs a wash has in turn had to sacrifice a quiet life living with their folks in the Midlands there was immediate and persistent criticism from fans of the video game that Ramsey didn’t look enough like Ellie Ramsey came out as nonbinary and said that the they/them pronouns were “the most truthful to me” This generated more attention – perhaps more than was helpful for a teenager they concede – and again became a hot topic with trolls already furious at the inclusion of LGBTQ characters in the games both it and Ramsey were manifestly excellent “What makes Ellie so fascinating is that she has a lot of the fear and exuberance of a child “What you’re waiting for [in casting] is the person that makes it undeniable Ramsey and Pedro Pascal in a scene from The Last of Us season one Photograph: APBut here we are again with season two The first series followed Ellie and Joel as they travelled across an America infested with zombies; Ellie is immune to the Cordyceps fungus that causes the zombifying infection and the suspicion is that she could be humanity’s saviour But the season ended on a cliffhanger – spoiler alert – with a lie Joel told Ellie that saved her anguish but maybe compromised the rest of the planet Season two promises to reveal if Joel gets found out Ramsey has changed their mind on one aspect of the process: it doesn’t have to be life-changing after all I’ve realised that there is a large element of it that’s out of my control – but a large element of it also is Or can’t comprehend it so just carry on as if nothing’s happened.” Do people think, I wonder, “That can’t be Bella Ramsey That could be a classic actor flex – “I still take the tube,” says the A-lister who last used public transport in 2004 – but you believe Ramsey They come across as a funny and self-deprecating but basically pretty normal 21-year-old who happens to have landed on the biggest show on TV “What I’ve realised is that you reach that level of fame for a few months people are going to want to talk to me a bit more for a couple of months seeing that they have been doing it professionally for half their life but Ramsey insists that they never set out to be an actor and when Ramsey was four they joined their older sister in a local drama club Their highlights reel from those days would have included roles as a monkey a drama group in Nottingham that helped to bring through Samantha Morton As Lyanna Mormont in Game of Thrones Photograph: Landmark Media/AlamyWasn’t Ramsey nervous when they were cast I’d never known that I’d wanted to be an actor It wasn’t like this thing that I’d been dreaming of all my life.” They had struggled to make friends as a child; now Immediately it felt like a place where I belonged which I’d never felt anywhere else in my life not in any of the millions of clubs I was a part of.” A much bigger deal for Ramsey was landing the lead this is it.’” Ramsey was in the show for three seasons shooting for 16 weeks each summer in Cheshire and I was away from home for the first time,” they say “I didn’t even go on a residential school trip before because I didn’t want to be away from home.” to the stress of feeling that they had to set an example to the cast and crew you have the responsibility of that on your shoulders There is a maturity that’s required of you that thankfully came quite naturally to me Ramsey recovered from the anorexia with counselling and those experiences have inspired them to write a film script Toast and Jam (the title comes from what they ate each night to help them recover from the illness) The screenplay is about a 14-year-old girl with an eating disorder and Ramsey wants to direct it there’s a sense that they have experienced a lot They agree: “There is now an element of me looking back and being like I was never a teenager.’ I do feel like I went from kid to adult I had to show up on set every day and be responsible and have this very adult job.” ‘It’s certainly a wild ride’: Ramsey and Isabela Merced in the second season of The Last of Us Photograph: HBOIt is perhaps not surprising that Ramsey has always found adult company easier than people their own age But they have left home now and moved into a flat in London “Because I’ve grown up a lot with people much older than me that is the dynamic that I’m really comfortable in and really good at,” says Ramsey I’ve got a small group of friends who are my age – for the first time really positive thing of letting go of the shy Something that has bolstered Ramsey in recent times is being diagnosed as neurodiverse when they were shooting the first season of The Last of Us “Someone on set just assumed that I was autistic,” they recall ‘Whoa!’ I’ve always thought that maybe I was but I thought I’d sort of been making it up Then I went through the whole diagnostic process about a headstrong 14-year-old girl in 13th-century Lincolnshire I don’t really know the big events that happened My prep for everything is just to make it feel like I’m not acting really Make it feel like I’m immersed in this world and I’d know what I’d be doing at lunchtime or stuff.” For Dunham, Ramsey’s versatility gives them the ability to play almost anything. “Bella reminds me of Tilda Swinton in Orlando,” the director told Vogue “[They have] that ability to shapeshift and become new in front of your very eyes They have a quality that is both modern and totally timeless They’d fit as easily at a rave in Dalston as in a Renaissance court.” Because of not going to school during her teenage years – Ramsey studied online at King’s InterHigh and has followed it up with courses on environmental science from the Open University – they accept they have some gaps in their knowledge acting has bestowed them with more esoteric talents such as horse-riding and broadsword fighting “You never know when the medieval times are going to come again Nothing quite so left field was required for the new season of The Last of Us Ramsey did a lot of physical training and Brazilian jujitsu sessions to make it convincing that someone 5ft 1in could fend off hordes of snarling zombies “But it was a really nice thing for me to do grappling and fighting Because I never had the experience as a kid of friendly fighting with friends So it felt like I was living a childhood dream.” A main thread in the new season is Ellie’s relationship with Dina, played by Isabela Merced. The Last of Us is a progressive show – there are gay characters, and this series introduces Lev, a trans teenager – and Ramsey believes that can have a powerful impact in introducing a mainstream audience to queer storylines. “On set, there’s no having to hide or feel like you’re out of place,” they say. “Everyone feels like they belong working on the show, and hopefully as a viewer as well.” How does Ramsey feel about their decision to come out as non-binary? “Part of me looks back and I wish that I didn’t, because I didn’t want it to become a headline and a big thing,” they say. “And obviously it was going to, and I didn’t really understand that at the time. And I wasn’t really prepared for that. But on the other hand, people have said to me that it’s been very helpful for them seeing some representation. “So it’s been a mixed bag, but overall, I think it was a good thing, just for me living more freely, without feeling like I’m keeping a secret,” Ramsey goes on. “But now I’m like, ‘I’ll talk about it, but I don’t want it to be the focus any more.’ I guess I’m just quite chill with it. And I want everyone else to be as chill with it basically.” Read moreRamsey seems to be in a good place; not long before we meet they deactivated their Instagram account Part of the inspiration was of them had social media,” Ramsey says “I remember them just being so normal and funny and interesting They were famous because they were great at something They never pushed themselves out there and made themselves more famous.” Watch a trailer for season two of The Last of Us.Ramsey had never planned to have a social-media presence: they started their Instagram account initially because there were fake accounts pretending to be them “The problem was that I did sort of enjoy it,” Ramsey admits “I’m so susceptible to the dopamine hits of scrolling I’d lose sleep just scrolling on Instagram And I didn’t need that in my life any more.” a third season of The Last of Us has already been announced “I would like to be acting until my last breath This is the archive of The Observer up until 21/04/2025 The Observer is now owned and operated by Tortoise Media and the biggest obstacle to a Miami Dolphins trade involving their Pro Bowl cornerback continues to be his contract It's not just about the Dolphins having to deal with the cap ramifications associated with a Ramsey trade it's about finding a trade partner willing to take on the veteran's contract And it may get to the point where the Dolphins will have no choice but to agree to pay some of that salary to facilitate a trade And while the circumstances are a bit different they Dolphins have done this before — with quarterback Ryan Tannehill in 2019 When the organization set out to execute a complete rebuilding project — way beyond a simple reset — one of the decisions the Dolphins made was moving forward without their 2012 first-round pick after seven seasons wasn't as simple as finding a team looking for a quarterback The Dolphins eventually were able to trade Tannehill to help get him off their books in 2020 which would have been the final year of a four-year extension he signed in 2016 the Dolphins agreed to pay him a $5 million signing bonus to push his cap number to $18.4 million for that 2019 season and got a measly return from the Tennessee Titans In exchange for Tannehill and a sixth-round pick the Dolphins got a 2020 fourth-round selection along with a seventh-round choice Ramsey is a lot more proven commodity as a player at this time than Tannehill was in 2019 but he's also older and actually is due to make more money than Tannehill was that year The Dolphins already have paid Ramsey a $4 million bonus this offseason and he's got $21 million more coming his way in 2025 which an acquiring team would fully absorb at this time barring an arrangement with Miami finding a team willing to do that might be difficult Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay kind of suggested that when he spoke late last week about Ramsey and his potential interest in bringing him back to Southern California “He is a total stud,” McVay told Adam Schein of SiriusXM Mad Dog Radio “and you look at — obviously he has continued to play at a really high level “And so there are a lot of layers when you’re talking about a player of his caliber And so those conversations are ongoing as I’m sure they are with multiple teams but we’re never gonna shy away from opportunities to increase the competitiveness of our roster or add great players as long as it fits within the framework of everything that an acquisition like that would entail.” The Rams make perfect sense as a trade partner for the Dolphins because they have a need in the secondary reached the second round of the playoffs last season and have a quarterback (Matthew Stafford) who probably has only a couple of years left as it will be for any potential trade partner will be the trade compensation and Ramsey's salary with a team likely willing to give Miami more in exchange for Ramsey the more salary the Dolphins are willing to absorb The Rams have a little more than $18 million of effective cap space currently have a little under $11.7 million of effective cap space (includes space needed for draft class) and their 2025 cap clearly would benefit for any Ramsey trade occurring after June 1 the Dolphins would have to count $6.7 million for Ramsey as opposed to more than $25 million if they traded him before June 1 (though $18.4 million would go against the 2026 cap) Dolphins GM Chris Grier said there were discussions with other teams throughout the weekend about a Ramsey Grier said the Dolphins won't necessarily wait until after June 1 to consummate a deal even if that would make the cap hit less painful emphasizing he doesn't know when the right opportunity will surface was asked point blank about how he would describe his relationship with Ramsey and he sidestepped the question saying there was no purpose in talking about it and taking away attention from the draft picks Subscribe to feels “lucky” to have gotten sober before having kids Jalen Ramsey is the biggest name on the trade block right now after he and the Miami Dolphins mutually agreed it’d be best to part ways The Dolphins are still shopping the cornerback but a deal may not come together until June for salary cap purposes McVay was asked by Adam Schein of SiriusXM’s Mad Dog Sports Radio for an update on Ramsey and he says talks are continuing to take place “There’s not too much of an update,” McVay said And so there are a lot of layers when you’re talking about a player of his caliber – ‘All right the compensation that they would be looking for in exchange for receiving a player of his magnitude.’ And so those conversations are ongoing but we’re never going to shy away from opportunities to increase the competitiveness of our roster or add great players as long as it fits within the framework of everything that an acquisition like that would entail.” Compensation shouldn’t be too big of a hurdle for the Rams considering the price might only be a third- or fourth-round pick Any team trading for Ramsey would inherit his current deal though it would essentially become a $21 million commitment for just one year and then “pay as you go” after that it would eat $29.213 million in dead money which would be a loss of $12.55 million in cap space Not exactly a feasible move for the Dolphins they could split the dead charge over the next two years making it more palatable for the front office the franchise pulled off a win in Super Bowl LVI over the Cincinnati Bengals that featured Matthew Stafford Ramsey was a key piece to this defense as one of the best pure defenders in the sport He was a highly-touted player in the 2016 NFL Draft and started his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars before being traded to Los Angeles for multiple high draft picks Just one season after hoisting the Lombardi the seven-time Pro Bowler was traded to the Miami Dolphins where he enjoyed three more strong seasons in South Beach Bringing back Ramsey may seem like an attempt to finally put the defense over the hump as a unit that should be reckoned with it’s fair to question whether the 11th-year pro can still perform at a high level Ramsey turns 31 this season and his days of being the top defensive back in the world are long gone the Rams are in need of a veteran presence on a young defense that features numerous starters with less than three years of league experience Ramsey is still a capable defender who can be the team’s starting nickel and provide quality coverage prowess While he’s not the person that could skyrocket the Rams defense into a new stratosphere Ramsey would be a welcomed upgrade and addition to the roster if a trade is pulled off Time will tell if the trade does commence and if so it’s another addition for a roster with the perfect blend of youth and veteran talent to return to the Super Bowl Ensure you follow on X (Twitter) Ramsey talks about Pedro Pascal and Isabela Merced >>>>> Aaron Ramsey started his senior Cardiff City career as a 16-year-old in 2007 Interim boss Aaron Ramsey insists his full focus is on leading Cardiff City to Championship safety but says he has "unfinished business" as a player Midfielder Ramsey stepped up to lead the Bluebirds from the dugout after Omer Riza's dismissal last weekend is concentrating on the Bluebirds' final two games of the season at home to West Bromwich Albion on Saturday and away to Norwich City says he has not yet thought about an immediate future in coaching "My way of looking at it is these two games and trying to keep this club in the Championship," said Ramsey "It means a lot to me and to be given this opportunity to try and do so "My full focus is on keeping Cardiff in the Championship and then it will be back to rehab with the hamstring." Ramsey played for Wales at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar when Rob Page's side disappointed as they exited at the group stage Asked if had unfinished business as a player of course there's a lot to play for and that World Cup [in 2026] is a massive carrot being dangled so that's what I'll be focusing on in a few weeks "I'm trying to get back from a hamstring injury so I'll be straight back into rehab after this season has finished "I managed to get the brace off on the weekend so it's still a few months away I've had the operation hoping that it might be the case to get my hamstring back working properly." 'Ramsey should be Cardiff boss next season' Caretaker bosses all round as Cardiff fight for survival Cardiff are three points from safety and may have to beat West Brom to have any hope of staying up A draw would leave Cardiff needing to rely on other results just to prolong the survival fight until the final weekend of the season while defeat would mean relegation is all but confirmed regardless of what happens elsewhere given their goal difference "It is a difficult position we are in there's no shying away from that," said Ramsey The people I've brought in are enjoying it and have brought that bit of freshness and everyone is buying into it It's all about getting the players into the best possible place for the game on Saturday "There are a lot of things that can happen until the end of the season Ramsey says he is "prepared for every scenario" as Cardiff look to avoid returning to the third tier after 22 years playing in the top two divisions of English football staff in the club are all together in this," he added "They have seen that with the fans at the weekend The celebration after the goal [against Oxford] so we all have to come together to make that possible." 118 CommentsAn emotional Aaron Ramsey was "gutted" by Cardiff City's relegation to League One but the caretaker manager believes they can make an instant return to the Championship if changes are made to the club's structure Wales captain Ramsey was taking charge of his second match as Cardiff's relegation was confirmed with a goalless draw at home to West Bromwich Albion on Saturday The 34-year-old midfielder faces an uncertain future as his Bluebirds contract expires at the end of this season and he will not rush to make any decisions "I don't know [about next season] Now is the time to digest everything over the next few weeks," said Ramsey The fans have had a difficult time this season and I really feel for them Ramsey believes the Cardiff players are not short on quality "I think if the right structures are in place with coaching staff and things these players will give you everything," he said "If they can do that and give them the opportunities they deserve then of course they're more than capable of coming straight back up "There's a lot of quality in that team They should be competing towards the top end of this league Relegation had long seemed inevitable for Cardiff who fell to the bottom of the Championship table five points adrift of safety with one game remaining following Saturday's draw which left them with just one win in 14 matches The Bluebirds had only narrowly avoided the drop in two of the previous three seasons and this campaign was typically turbulent for the Welsh club Ramsey became their third manager of the season when he took the reins for the final three games a week ago whose tenure lasted seven months following the departure of Erol Bulut Cardiff have gone through 16 different managers during owner Vincent Tan's 15-year tenure with eight of those coming in the past four years home fans applauded Cardiff's players but chanted for Tan's departure having held protests against the club's board earlier this season believe the Bluebirds' most significant issues are at board level where there is an apparent lack of football knowledge There is no sporting director or director of football none of whom have a background in the game and are seldom at games or the training ground "Things are a little different to what I've experienced at other clubs Normally you do have a head of football or a sporting director and they are aligned with the club," said Ramsey "But the biggest thing for me is making sure the right coaching staff is there because they drive the right habits and create a culture making the right decision in that and trusting the right person with that to bring in the right people around them who has the team's best interest at heart "As long as that structure is OK you can get away with a lot of other things and you can give these players an opportunity everyone has to look at themselves in the mirror and we have to be big enough to accept that because this club has got so much potential it's just about getting that right and it's about responding to this and getting back quickly." Season two of The Last of Us airs Sundays at 9pm ET on Max. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reporetd during Sunday's SportsCenter and suggested the $24 million in guarantees has proven to be a "sticking point" in negotiations. "Miami has been calling around on Ramsey trying to work a potential trade," Fowler said. "They were doing so in the days leading up to the NFL draft. So something could shake out here this off season. I'm told Ramsey does want to play for a contender. So, he wouldn't just go to any team, considering his age, his pedigree as a Super Bowl winner.  My sense after asking around is Miami has not been overly eager to cover some of that bill which sort of makes a trade hard to pull off right now Ramsey trade rumors have circulated since Miami general manager Chris Grier told reporters last month the plan was to move the cornerback "Really after a couple weeks of discussions between ourselves internally and Jalen and his representation we decided that it was probably in the best interest for all parties to move forward," Grier said while also making it clear Ramsey didn't ask for a trade NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported during the draft it "does not feel to me like anything is imminent" with a trade: .css-1xiyrl{display:-webkit-box;display:-webkit-flex;display:-ms-flexbox;display:flex;-webkit-box-pack:center;-ms-flex-pack:center;-webkit-justify-content:center;justify-content:center;aspect-ratio:unset;}The financials being a "sticking point" would help explain why nothing has materialized to this point although Ramsey is surely an intriguing option to teams that need help in the secondary three First-Team All-Pro selections and seven Pro Bowl nods While he is 30 years old and may not be playing at the same level as his peak he was still a Pro Bowler in 2023 and finished with 11 passes defended while playing all 17 games last year will surely continue to monitor the situation as the offseason progresses The English actor said they struggled to make friends as a child (Suzan Moore/PA) Kit Harington has opened up about being deservedly “humiliated” by Bella Ramsey while filming Game of Thrones who stars in HBO video game adaptation The Last of Us But I am proud of the last couple of performances I think the level of effort that the players have put in and the information that they’ve taken on in a short space of time was evident to see in the last two performances but the reality is we haven’t been good enough over the course of the season but you think with those performances and a confident team you’re probably winning those games pretty comfortably We went toe-to-toe with a really good team today a team that could maybe be competing for Play-Off places and even the top two We can be proud with what we’ve shown in the last couple of games “I wanted to come back and help the team on the field That hasn’t materialised like we all imagined and what we all wanted It’s been very frustrating because this Club means a lot to me and I wanted to help them as much as I could That’s why I’ve put myself forward to take over the last few games because I felt like I could have an impact and effort from the lads but it wasn’t to be and we have to own up to that." Ramsey continued with reflection on the 2024/25 campaign everybody has to look at themselves in the mirror and say that over the course of the season We have to be big enough to accept that and we need to get it right for next season It's so important because this Club has got so much potential It's just about getting that right now and hopefully responding well to this and bouncing back quickly “This Club is massive and for us to be taking a step back now Hopefully it won’t have too big of an effect if we can get it right to bounce straight back It will be difficult but it’s all about making sure we can give ourselves the best opportunity to come back up because we should be looking forward and hopefully it’s a situation where it’s one step back City will play one final match this season with a trip to Carrow Road to play Norwich City on Saturday May 3rd and Ramsey had a message for the fans following today's game “I just want to say a massive thank you to all the fans," Aaron added I’m just gutted we didn’t get to celebrate a win together from the last two performances "When the players show that level of intensity the fans back you all day long and to get this Club back to where it belongs the fans are going to play a huge part in that I’d like to say a massive thank you to them for their support.” No deal has come together yet despite the Dolphins calling teams in an attempt to move Ramsey and there’s likely a reason for that Jeremy Fowler of ESPN provided an update on "SportsCenter" Sunday saying the Dolphins’ reluctance to pay some of Ramsey’s guarantees has been a “sticking point.” Fowler also noted that the Rams are “certainly” a team to watch in the Ramsey sweepstakes as they consider a move to reacquire the star corner "The sticking point here is that $24 million in guarantees,” Fowler reported “My sense after asking around is Miami has not been overly eager to cover some of that bill Fowler says Ramsey wants to play for a contender, a box the Rams definitely check. There’s no denying Los Angeles’ interest, with Sean McVay saying last week that “conversations are ongoing,” and we can assume Ramsey would be open to a return to the Rams It would probably only take a mid-round pick to get a deal done for Ramsey but as Fowler reported it’s the contract that’s causing a delay in any potential trade
