Redcar are bidding to build on an impressive home opener when they face Workington in the BSN Series at the ECCO Arena tonight
The Bears have the early advantage in the Northern group after taking the aggregate point from their clashes against Scunthorpe
which included a big home win over the Scorpions last week
They bring in Anders Rowe to guest for Erik Riss who is the wild card for this weekend’s German Grand Prix
and Redcar star Danny King says they are keen to follow up their 57-point haul from last time out
King said: “Obviously that’s the plan but a repeat will be tough
We all rode well last week so we are hoping that continues
there’s a long way to go but I’m really pleased with the early signs from the boys
Meanwhile the Comets race for the first time as a team in 2025 having previously been frustrated by the weather
Jacob Hook and Vinnie Foord all making their debuts
Comets stand-in boss James Wilson said: “Redcar is always a tough place to go
and even though Erik Riss isn’t riding they have a very capable guest in Anders
we won there last year and there’s no reason we can’t do it again – especially with Vinnie and Jacob at reserve it could be the edge we need to get a result.”

a passenger train travelling between Saltburn and Nunthorpe struck a car on Redcar level crossing
which is situated in the unitary authority of Redcar and Cleveland
The collision took place with the train travelling at 23 mph (37 km/h)
The car driver was injured in the collision and significant damage was caused to the car
There were no reported injuries to the passengers and staff on the train
The investigation found that the signaller had opened Redcar level crossing to road traffic following the passage of a previous train to allow road traffic to clear
The signaller then forgot that the crossing was open and tried to set the route for the passenger train into Redcar Central station but was unable to clear the protecting signal to allow the train to proceed
This was because the interlocking in the signalling system had detected that the crossing was open
the signaller authorised the train to pass the signal at danger
In the absence of the crossing gates being closed or the road traffic signals being activated
the car driver drove onto the crossing where the collision occurred
RAIB found that the normal sequence of actions used by the signaller to set the route for the train to enter Redcar Central station was disrupted
probably causing them to forget that Redcar level crossing was open to road traffic
This disruption included a telephone call and a perceived fault with the signalling panel
RAIB also found that the visual and procedural cues available to the signaller of the status of Redcar level crossing
which may have alerted them that it remained open
were either not used or were not effective
The investigation also found that the train driver did not approach the level crossing at a speed that would have allowed them to stop the train before it collided with the car
The train driver was also unable to see that the crossing gates were open to road traffic due to their unusual design
RAIB additionally identified that there were no engineered controls fitted to the level crossing that would have automatically activated the wig-wag lights when the train approached
An underlying factor to the accident was that Network Rail’s processes for managing signaller competence had not effectively addressed the signaller’s previous operational incidents
RAIB also found that no ergonomic assessment of the layout of controls at Redcar signal box had been carried out
and that this was a possible underlying factor
RAIB has made one recommendation to Network Rail
This deals with reviewing the ergonomic risks associated with the operation of the signals and level crossings at Redcar signal box
Three learning points have also been identified
relating to the need to comply with the rules associated with trains being authorised to pass signals at danger
These relate to signallers checking that the route is clear
to train drivers driving at caution at controlled level crossings
and to signallers specifying the locations of controlled level crossings to train drivers
The sole purpose of RAIB investigations is to prevent future accidents and incidents and improve railway safety
While our investigations are completely independent of the railway industry
we do maintain close liaison with railway companies and if we discover matters that may affect the safety of the railway
we make sure that information about them is circulated to the right people as soon as possible

George Scott’s ZAPPATA had a bit in hand when getting off the mark at Wetherby on Sunday and a 6 lb penalty seems unlikely to stop him if showing up in a similar mood this afternoon
Southwell winner I Can Boogy wasn’t seen to best effect when sixth here on Easter Monday and should figure
while Bigfield Dream wouldn’t be the first Alice Haynes handicap newcomer to improve for cheekpieces and needs monitoring for market support
LOTHLORIEN did well to overcome inexperience when making a winning start at Beverley for Kevin Ryan last August and can return in style here at the chief expense of fellow debut scorer Fluorescence who also has better days ahead of her after her ready win at Southwell last October
Last month’s Ripon winner Angelic Bugler and Michael Dods’ debutant Call Me Betty appeal as the pick of the rest for minor honours
A few of these arrive with a question mark against them so this looks a good opportunity for Brian Ellison’s NORTHERNER to capitalise on a handy-looking mark and gain her breakthrough success as she wasn’t beaten far when fifth on last month’s return at Nottingham
Sergeant Mayer was beaten a neck in the same race and is feared most ahead of Let’s Go Hugo who’s been fourth in both his starts this spring and has another go in cheekpieces
SEE THAT STORM went the right way in handicaps upon joining Ed Bethell last season
bringing up the hat-trick over this course and distance on his final start in September
Appealing as the type to rate higher still as a four-year-old
he can make light of an absence a defy the handicapper once more
Easy Newcastle winner Creatif is another who appeals as the type to progress further and is feared
Mark Walford’s KIMEKO GLORY was evidently well served by the increase in trip when making a winning return from four months off at Beverley last week
The manner of that victory suggests a 6 lb penalty may not be enough to prevent her making a bold bid to follow up
Handicap debutants Divine Legacy and Gennadius are others to consider
with Blueandtangerine another to keep an eye on over a distance that promises to suit

The revitalisation of Redcar high street is set to begin next month
aimed at enhancing the area’s appearance and functionality
which secured £25 million of Government funding back in 2021 to regenerate Redcar's town centre and seafront
all of which were identified as being priorities by residents during consultations.
The works will be carried out in phases to minimise disruption
with phase one scheduled from April to October 2025 and phase two continuing until November 2026
said: “We are looking forward to seeing a transformed high street once works are complete
and ask for your patience while the improvement works take place.”

Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council is adding new chargers at a wide variety of council-owned car parks across community and leisure centres
The first tranche of 22 chargers are due to be installed in the spring and summer of 2025
designed to cater for residents without driveways or access to at-home EV charging
with funding support from the On-Street Residential ChargePoint Scheme (ORCS)
The first set will serve the long-stay and overnight charging needs of residents and visitors
and subsequent phases will see Believ install rapid charging to suit top-up charging and shorter driver dwell times
said the borough was making significant progress in developing EV infrastructure to support local people with making greener travel choices
“It is vital we deliver a reliable and accessible network for those who do not have access to private charging and to ensure no one is left behind in the transition to electric vehicles
“That is why we are using government funding to serve the residential areas less likely to have attracted private industry funding
we have access to all charging speeds and their depth of experience in understanding what technology is best suited to what location.”
senior public sector partnerships manager at Believ
“The new installations across Redcar will significantly improve residents’ access to reliable
convenient EV charging – helping more drivers make the switch.”

(Because)There are flashes of brilliance in this roughly-hewn album
but also flaws hidden by production flourishes
As fans decried his lack of involvement in the endless water-based procession
the French art-pop practitioner hinted at having been in talks to partake but said he was “weakened and bored by their system” (he would later perform during the closing ceremony of the Paralympics)
he added: “I might act drastically in the upcoming few days.”
View image in fullscreenThe artwork for Hopecore
Redcar – a name he has been using since 2021 – posted a WeTransfer link to his social media platforms containing the seven tracks of his fifth album
Its rushed delivery spoke to Redcar’s recent personal and professional turbulence: the free-to-download record was listed as containing eight songs
but track five was missing; when asked where it was by fans on X
Redcar replied: “Track 5 is God.” That the album now arrives officially
under a new artist name – one he says he was “gifted while on a spiritual journey” – and with just seven songs
Leaking a brand new album ahead of schedule was probably not going to help things. And Hopecore certainly isn’t a return to the supple pop immediacy of Chaleur Humaine, or the Prince-esque strut of 2018’s followup, Chris
flashes of brilliance in its roughly-hewn dance anthems and expansive meanderings – entirely written
Opener Forgive 8888888 ricochets around a flighty synth line and pulsating beat
with Redcar utilising the various shades of his voice to communicate a sense of spiritual healing
laser-guided synth punctures the song’s dry ice atmosphere in the final third
ever-expanding atmospherics and glorious chopped-up vocal samples
things get dense on the 20-minute Opéra (I Understand)
it represents Hopecore’s central flaw – a belief that lyrical repetition and so-so melodies can be pasted over with production flourishes
So while Opéra (I Understand) sounds magnificent – like a spaceship hovering over a crowd of pianists playing in a thunderstorm – it utilises a simple repeated line (“I understand / I’m sorry”) as its foundation
That it forgets to build much on top lyrically is a real shame
Hopecore is another intriguing rather than wholly enjoyable sonic evolution
Having accidentally landed in the mainstream consciousness a decade ago
it’s been a long fight for Redcar to excavate himself from its strict parameters
a more immediate connection between him and his hardcore fanbase
“I need your hearts close to mine,” he said on X
during Hopecore’s initial unexpected rollout
