The latest walk report from Rossendale Ramblers
By InYourArea Community · 2 May 2025
It was sunshine all the way for our walks this week
21 ramblers had a scenic 10 mile watery walk near Marple
A charming element of this walk was Bruce’s Clock
a local hero who was head mechanic at Strines Calico Printing Works and who built a clock with a bell for start and finish work times
On Sunday we were more local for a seven mile walk from Edgworth that explored the local countryside and the MoD firing range on Holcombe Hill
A group of rusting old – perhaps classic – cars were an interesting feature of this lovely local are
This relatively easy walk in the delightful Ribble Valley will visit the charming village of Wiswell before finishing at around 2pm
May 7 we offer a 10 mile walk from Skelmersdale that will take in Dean Wood
with excellent views on anything like a decent day
This quite tough walk includes parts of the Pennine Way
Our walks are free, but after three walks with us we ask you to join The Ramblers, at a cost of only £3.58 per month. Further information about Rossendale Ramblers can be found on our website at www.rossendale-ramblers.co.uk, or you can contact us via secretary Bernie on 07752 570304, or at inforosram@gmail.com

The facility would store energy from Scout Moor I
the energy firm has lodged plans for a battery energy storage system on land at Rochdale Road and Bamford Road
Cubico Sustainable Investments, which is also advancing onshore wind plans nearby in the form of Scout Moor II
said the proposed 85MW battery will play an important role in supporting the UK’s energy transition by making the most of energy generated by the existing Scout Moor I wind farm
The project team includes Turley as planner
TEP advising on landscape and visual impact and ecology,
and Hydrock providing multidisciplinary services
the driving principle is that by storing surplus energy when demand is low and discharging it when needed
lower costs and reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels
The new battery would connect to the existing Croston Close Road substation
using the infrastructure already in place for the existing Scout Moor I
This means there will be no need for new overhead lines or substations
Cubico said there would be minimal visual impact and a biodiversity net gain of approximately 28% through new planting
said: “Battery storage is a vital part of the UK’s transition to clean energy
and this project will play a key role in that journey here in Rossendale and Rochdale
By storing electricity and releasing it when demand is higher
we’re committed to enhancing the environment around the project with significant biodiversity improvements that will leave a lasting and positive impact on the area”
The application can be found on Rossendale Council’s website under reference 2024/0501
I would be interested to see what the biodiversity gains will be
As these were promised in Scout Moor 1 and nothing materialised
In plans now lodged with the local authority
Energi Generation wants to co-locate a 13MW ground-mounted solar farm east of Peel Road with an already approved battery energy storage system
Blackburn-based Vital Energi will deliver the £21m Net Zero Energy Centre
which will host an array of air and water source heat pumps

Dog owners have hit out against plans for a new padel court in Rawtenstall - over fears the noise will upset their pups on their daily park walk
The multi-use games area in Whitaker Park is set to become temporary padel courts in May - to allow the community to give the sport a try
And as part of the plans, PadelParcs have submitted a planning application to Rossendale Council to put a 21 square-metre cabin next to the facility at the park. The proposed building is set to serve as a clubhouse for the court
There are 17 objections listed on Rossendale Council’s website so far- with most of the concerns being centered around noise
There is a worry the games will be disruptive to other park users and people living close to the park
People have also objected on the grounds the noise from the padel would distress the many dogs that walk in the park each day
is becoming increasingly popular in the UK and is a hybrid of tennis and squash
The proposed hours of operation are Monday to Sunday 7am until 10pm
One full-time and two part-time jobs will be available and the site will feature two doubles courts and one singles court
The plans stated: “PadelParcs have been liaising with the council to bring the community facility to Whitaker Park and were advised to complete this application for the installation of the temporary Portakabin.”
Residents said the multi-use games area is used well and daily by children
They added if the plans were to be approved it would mean children would lose access to the only safe area where they could play basketball and football
with one person calling this possibility a ‘crying shame’
people are concerned about the increase of anti-social behaviour if the facility was to be taken away
submitted their objections which can be viewed on the council’s website
Their letter reads: “The suggested site is right next to our garden
It is bad enough that we have to suffer the noise and bad language from the all-weather pitch without this proposal as well
“The idea it will be a clubhouse indicates food and drink and noise will be involved which will be bad enough - but no toilet facilities have been considered
We are used to the shrubberies being used as toilets
The couple also raised concerns over an increase in smoking and in the number of vehicles travelling to the park
it is likely to encourage an increase in smoking
What the council don’t know is the number of times I have had to put out fires in the shrubbery from fag-ends setting light to undergrowth
“I am also very concerned that this will encourage an increase in the number of vehicles that decide to come and park nearby
This still happens because the paths are not blocked off effectively at all times.”
Park-users say they feel Padel Tennis would be better suited to the sports centres such as the Adrenaline Centre or Marl Pits
Objection documents reveal there are already paid tennis courts at Whitaker Park which are not as frequently used as before when they were free of charge
Residents added not as many youths will be able to use the court because it will most likely have gates that charge money like the tennis courts
Rossendale Council and PadelParcs were contacted for comment

so the sun only shone on two of our three walks this week
It was windy and wet on our 10 mile Wednesday walk from Hollingworth Lake up to the exposed moorland area of Blackstone Edge
when 23 walkers and three dogs had a delightful and partly sunny two hour pub walk from Shuttleworth to Strongstry
where we heard about the weavers’ uprising and massacre of April 26 1826
A very pleasant hour was spent in the pub afterwards
Easter Sunday saw six ramblers enjoying a sunny and interesting 10 mile walk from Borsdane Wood to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal
seeing the ‘Wigan Flight’ of 23 broad-beam locks
which lower the canal down to Wigan by 50m
when we offer a six mile walk from Edgworth
leaving plenty of time for family or shopping
April 30 by a 10 mile walk from Oxenhope that will explore the Brontë Way
including the Brontë waterfalls and ‘the ruins’
on the following evening we begin our summer two hour pub walk schedule
with optional refreshments and further social in the pub afterwards
These walks are a great way to get to know us
DAY Architectural led on the design of the revamped Rawtenstall Market
Part of the borough’s successful £17m Levelling Up Fund bid
the proposals will see the market get new entrances
and a multi-purpose space for hosting events and pop-ups
Rossendale Council voted to approve the Rawtenstall Market changes at its development control meeting last week
Rawtenstall Market sits off Newchurch Road
although a past fire means that the oldest existing building is from 1923
Footfall in the past years has declined from 1,500 to 800 visitors
combined with its dated frontage and lack of greenery
has prompted the council to refurbish the space
the new version of Rawtenstall Market will boast solar panels
a refurbished roof with improved insulation and double-glazed roof lights
Parts of its façade will be demolished to enable the reconfigured entrances – including one that will open up directly onto Bank Street
The market has been designed to be opened five days a week
There would be regular events to help drive people to the space as well as new stalls and an outdoor seating area
with the proposed version set to have 25 car parking spaces
five will be equipped for EV charging and four will be reserved for those who are disabled
There will also be a designated motorcycle space and a cycle store
said she was “delighted” to get planning permission
“This is a key part of our masterplan for the town centre
adding value to ongoing improvements in the town centre,” she said
“We are confident that these changes will make the market a more vibrant
and fit-for-purpose destination for traders and shoppers alike for the long term.”
Barnes also paid tribute to the project’s architect: DAY Architectural
“We would also like to thank the design team at DAY Architectural for their professional input and contributions to the project designs to date
which have played a key role in progressing our plans efficiently and effectively,” Barnes said
“This project demonstrates our ongoing commitment to breathing new life into our town centres and markets across the borough
ensuring they continue to serve as valuable hubs for our communities.”

It is hard to believe that we can reach mid-April with no rain on our walks
but our walks this week were all in the sun
23 ramblers had an invigorating 10 mile from Austerlands
The walk included Uppermill on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal
which scales the Pennines and – at its summit - is the highest stretch of canal in Britain
On Friday we had our first linear walk of the year
which saw 12 ramblers take a bus from Padiham to Whalley
before returning on a scenic 10 mile route that included the local landmark of Whalley Nab
on Sunday we had 26 walkers on a six mile easier walk from Jumbles Reservoir to the Last Drop Village and Turton Tower
when we have a two hour pub walk from Shuttleworth that will visit Strongstry and Chatterton before returning to the pub for optional refreshments and lunch
These walks are an excellent way to get to know
On the following day we have a fairly easy nine mile walk from Hindley that will visit Borsdane Wood and the Leeds & Liverpool Canal at Top Lock before returning via Haigh Hall
April 23 – St George’s Day – we start a 10 mile walk in Marple Bridge
This very scenic walk will take in the Peak Forest Canal
Following a period of public consultation in November 2024
Cubico Sustainable Investments has submitted a planning application to Rossendale Borough Council for a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) on land at Rochdale Road and Bamford Road in Turn Village
The proposed 85MW battery will play an important role in supporting the UK’s energy transition by making the most of the clean
homegrown energy generated by Scout Moor I wind farm
By storing surplus energy when demand is low and discharging it when needed
lower costs and reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels – all while helping to cut carbon emissions
using the infrastructure already in place for the existing Scout Moor I wind farm
reducing disruption for residents and making the project more efficient and sustainable
In addition to helping store and distribute clean energy
the project will also deliver significant environmental benefits
The proposals include comprehensive landscape and biodiversity improvements
ensuring minimal visual impact and delivering a biodiversity net gain of approximately 28% through new planting
and ecological enhancements that will support local wildlife
“By storing electricity and releasing it when demand is higher
we’re committed to enhancing the environment around the project with significant biodiversity improvements that will leave a lasting and positive impact on the area.”
The project team comprises: Turley (planning)
A neighbourhood police officer has been sacked over claims he simulated a sex act on a male colleague - and also sexually assaulted him
PC Daniel Stoddard faced a misconduct hearing this week in which it was alleged that
he sexually assaulted a colleague while on duty
It was also alleged that on an unspecified date in 2017 or 2018 PC Stoddard simulated a sex act on the colleague
PC Stoddard denied the claims - but a panel ruled his behaviour amounted to gross misconduct
The misconduct hearing on Monday and Tuesday was chaired by Assistant Chief Constable Karen Edwards with two independent lay members and a legally qualified advisor
Publishing the outcome of the hearing, the force said: "It was alleged that being a police officer with Lancashire Constabulary
on March 13 2023 Police Constable 3772 Stoddard sexually assaulted a colleague whilst on duty
"It was also alleged that in 2017 or 2018 Police Constable 3772 Stoddard simulated a sex act on a colleague and this conduct was unsolicited and unwanted
"It was alleged that the above conduct was a breach of the Standards of Professional Behaviour in the areas of authority
respect and courtesy and discreditable conduct
"The panel found that the conduct breached of the Standards of Professional Behaviour in the areas of authority
respect and courtesy and discreditable conduct and amounted to gross misconduct
"PC 3772 Stoddard was dismissed without notice and his details have been added to the College of Policing Barred list."
Being added to the College of Policing barred list means that Stoddard will not be able to work within policing and certain law enforcement bodies

COUNTRY HOUSE: Gawthorpe Hall in Padiham
so the only problem encountered by our walkers has been exactly how little to wear
A total of 63 ramblers walked 20 miles during the week
27 ramblers set off from Gawthorpe Hall in Padiham for a lovely 10 mile figure of eight circuit that included the River Calder
On Saturday we had one of our ever-popular two hour pub walks
The 15 walkers enjoyed a scenic stroll in a surprisingly rural part of Helmshore before most of them retired for lunch and some further social in a local bar
on Sunday we had 21 walkers on a six mile easy walk from Greenmount that took in the Kirklees Trail
when a six mile walk will take us from Jumbles Reservoir to the unique Last Drop Village and the lovely Turton Tower
returning along the length of the reservoir
leaving the rest of the day free for family matters
Then on Wednesday 16 April we offer a 10 mile walk from Hollingworth Lake that promises dramatic scenery as it takes the Roman Road from Lydgate to Blackstone Edge and sections of the Pennine Way and Rochdale Way
