The Orchard pub in Ruislip has been added to Hillingdon Council’s local list of buildings of architectural and historical importance following a nomination by residents The decision was approved by the council’s Cabinet on 10 April after a six-week public consultation held between 1 January and 13 February during which 97 per cent of responses supported the building being added to the list The local list includes buildings that are of good design quality or hold historical and cultural value within the borough While the list does not provide statutory protection it ensures that these factors are considered in future planning applications The Orchard was originally built in 1905 as a bungalow providing refreshments to Londoners visiting the countryside via the Metropolitan line a second storey and a large pavilion were later added The building is recognised as an early example of 20th-century Metroland architecture During the Second World War, the pub became a popular spot for Polish Air Force squadrons, airmen, and support staff from nearby RAF Northolt The building is referenced in several wartime memoirs and a war memorial has since been erected on the site Cllr Steve Tuckwell, Hillingdon Council’s Cabinet Member for Planning said: “Our borough has a rich and unique heritage and the council’s aim is to ensure its preserved and enhanced “While we support growth and new developments it must be in the right places and not at the sacrifice of our distinct heritage and green spaces the list is a great way to protect and celebrate buildings that make the borough special.” the Cabinet also agreed to defer a decision on whether to include the North Hayes Telephone Exchange in the local list pending further information about the site Harrow Online is a company Field End Road, Ruislip at 20:40hrs on Friday “Officers were called to the scene after a car was reported to have hit a pedestrian was taken to hospital by the London Ambulance service Her injuries were later confirmed to be non-life-threatening The crash caused significant disruption in the area with the northern side of the roundabout blocked off by police and traffic being diverted A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called yesterday at 8.33pm (11 April) to reports of a road traffic collision on Field End Road “We sent resources to the scene including an ambulance crew London have been revealed following a public backlash over changes to a historic pub with links to the Second World War. The supermarket announced plans to build a new store at The Orchard in Ruislip in December 2024 The plans received backlash from local residents as many were concerned about the proposal to demolish The Orchard a public house frequently visited by members of the 303 Squadron during World War 2 Representatives from Lidl confirmed that the company’s intention remains to demolish The Orchard At a meeting between Lidl and the Ruislip Residents Association on Monday (March 17) concerns were raised that the significance of the memorial Spitfire and stone would be diminished if the building is demolished It was also noted that the rendering plans do not show the original stone or Spitfire memorial He said: “The building is not a listed building I think it’s therefore fair to say that any future use of the site “There is a particular issue around the memorial which is something we need to do something about… it [the memorial] has been taken away for repair by the Polish Airman Association and at this stage they themselves are not able to commit to being able to return it to this site.” Lidl remain committed to a memorial on this site although what this may look like is yet to be decided Planning documents point towards a memorial within a garden with benches and plaques The design of the store has also been altered to better reflect the surrounding area The site sits in the Ruislip Village Conservation Area Lidl had originally planned for the store to reflect the general Lidl aesthetic however materials that will maintain the local character will be used instead The site is not near to Ruislip’s main transport hub meaning much of the town will not be on a direct bus route to the supermarket There are proposals to reopen a pedestrian entrance at the corner of the site at the junction of Sharps Lane and Ickenham Road The residents association flagged that this entrance was closed by Beefeater several years ago because it was so dangerous. Toan Chau, a Transport Specialist for Lidl, said there will be dedicated pedestrian and cycle routes from Ickenham Road. incident happened at a property on Bridgewater Road at around 9am described how the suspects had been watching the house before breaking in “At 9am yesterday (Monday) my dad’s home was targeted with an armed robbery machetes and balaclavas had been waiting and stalking our home and routine in a suspected white van parked at the back of our house on Bridgewater Road father and step mother was out of the house and opened the door and back gate for the other two to enter “They went straight upstairs to the master bedroom Two of them robbed that room leaving the others Ozzie the pug in my brother’s room and grabbed him “Evidence of this shows via the muddy boot prints on the foot of the bed where he lay it was suspected that Ozzie ran out of the open door in fear but he did not return as he has done before “Our other theory was that he bolted and was picked up along the busy urban area He would have been taken to the vet by now to contact us and be returned my step mum returned to the house unexpectedly to pick up material she had forgotten for work It was then she was held down with a machete and told not to move police responded within minutes of being called detectives and investigators were at the scene “We can replace the materials stolen and we are very lucky that my step mother was not harmed though the psychological aftermath is severe What we cannot replace is our family member “He has a distinct scar on his hind leg He is firmly attached to us just as we are to him “Social media is spreading Ozzie’s poster and story like wildfire as it is most likely the criminals who took him prevent him being sold on as he has been kidnapped the more chance we have of him being returned to us It takes one good person to simply take him to the vet to be scanned “There is a £1000 reward for his return.” A spokesperson for Met Police told Harrow Online: “Police were called at 09:36hrs on Monday, 10 February to an aggravated burglary in Bridgwater Road, Ruislip
