A community hub in North Wales has opened a sandwich bar.
The new venture, at The Centre in Ruthin, will offer a weekly macrobox meal deal offering a healthy choice with the right mix of protein and carbohydrates.
The idea has been introduced by husband and wife team Paul and Katie Edwards who took over the running of The Centre last April.
Since then they have been introducing a variety of concepts to increase the use of The Centre and to boost the health of the community, including the installation of a gym pod next to The Centre.
Personal trainer Paul designed the gym pod himself and it offers privacy and expert support to those who are targeting better health and fitness.
The sandwich bar is open from Tuesdays to Fridays from 10am to 2pm and has been named The Grub Hub in tribute to the cafe Katie and her mum used to run in Denbigh.
The couple’s work at The Centre has received a ringing endorsement from the Pendine Arts and Community Trust (PACT), which supports community health and well-being, by Mario Kreft MBE and his wife, Gill, the owners of the Pendine Park care organisation.
PACT has been helping to promote the work of the couple as they look to increase the use of The Centre.
“We’ve opened up the gym pod, and now it’s looking at the next phase of what to do. There is footfall there in The Centre now that we have grown the use in the last 12 months.
“There are a lot more people now knowing about the place, a lot more people using it – there's the tennis there, the driving range, the football, so a lot more people are coming.
“We originally just had vending machines, which are great, they’re something people can access when they are there, but we want to offer something else now, so we thought we would open up a sandwich bar.
“In the new sandwich bar we offer the normal kind of sandwiches, bacon butties, toasties, paninis, but also offer healthier options as well to tie in with the gym pod and to those who are more health conscious. So we provide salads, pasta bowls, and we also incorporate a weekly macrobox, as it’s called.
“The macrobox will include a protein, a carb, and a green or vegetable, so it could be chicken with rice and broccoli for example and a choice of sauce to go with it.
“The macroboxes are a healthy choice for those looking for a healthier meal.
“Obviously being in the community, being local, we do want to use local suppliers. So we are using Henllan Bakery for our bread, local butchers for our meat, we source local eggs and other products.”
Katie will be initially running the sandwich bar herself, though will be looking to bring in further members of staff as the trade builds up.
Katie has now given up her role as a part-time fundraiser for St Kentigern Hospice to work at The Centre full-time.
“The hospice job was a very rewarding role, and I loved it, they are lovely there and they do great work.
“We will still be supporting the hospice and looking to raise money for them at The Centre by doing some sort of event.”
The site, including the building, is owned by a community interest company, the Llanfwrog Community Association, and leased from Denbighshire County Council, with the various sporting activities being operated by different groups.

Colwyn Bay were crowned JD Cymru North champions on the final day of the season as they triumphed 1-0 away at Penrhyncoch.
The Seagulls needed just a point to seal the title
but claimed all three thanks to Dan Atkins’ strike in the 16thminute – his sixth goal in the last five matches
The forward raced onto Ethan Roberts’ long ball and sent a low drive beyond Leigh Jenkins from a tight angle.
A red card for Penrhyncoch defender Rhys Jenkins in first half stoppage time hampered the hosts’ comeback hopes and a goalless second period ensured that Colwyn Bay lifted the league trophy and secured promotion back to the JD Cymru Premier at the first attempt
Jamie Reed’s stunning bicycle kick earned a 1-0 win for Ruthin Town over Bangor 1876
which kept Ruthin up and relegated their opponents in dramatic fashion
Ruthin started the day in the relegation zone two points behind Bangor
and it was a tense afternoon at Maes Tegid with so much on the line.
But a key turning point arrived in the 61st minute when Bangor defender Jake Ellison was shown a straight red card for fouling Reed who was through on goal.
37-year-old Reed – who won the JD Cymru Premier title with Bangor City in 2011 – then produced a moment of magic in the 83rd minute as his acrobatic effort defeated Carl Jones
It was enough to condemn Bangor to an eighth consecutive defeat and third tier football next season
Airbus UK Broughton have battled for the title all season but must settle for a second-place finish despite a 3-2 final day win away at Caersws
James Davies played a neat one-two with Danny Warren before slotting home at the near post to open the scoring for Airbus in the 18th minute
then doubled the lead four minutes later with a dipping volley over Max Williams.
Warren made sure he claimed the division’s golden boot by heading home from Kaiden Cooke’s goal in the 34th minute for his 24th league goal of the campaign.
Caersws reduced the deficit through Rhys Hesden’s finish in first half stoppage time
while Harry Cottam headed in late on to set up a nervy ending
but Airbus held on to finish the season with a fifth consecutive away win.
Alfie Vaughan scored a stoppage-time equaliser to salvage a point for Denbigh Town in an entertaining 3-3 draw against Gresford Athletic at the Hollingsworth Group Stadium.
Haci Ozlu met Charlie Mann’s cross to the back post with a header to give Gresford the lead in the 28thminute
before Mann made it two by tapping home from close range early in the second half
two goals in as many minutes for Denbigh levelled the scoreline by the hour mark
Nathan Brown halved the deficit with a simple finish from close range
before half-time substitute Owen Davies fired home into the bottom corner.
A curling finish from Ozlu saw Gresford edge back in front in the 68th minute
before Denbigh won a penalty with four minutes left on the clock but Brown saw his spot-kick saved by Lewis Dutton
All hope was not lost for the Reds though as Vaughan fired home in the box in the 92nd minute to ensure a share of the spoils.
Dropped points for Denbigh meant that Mold Alexandra leapfrogged them to secure a top half spot with a 3-1 home win over Buckley Town.
Mold scored twice in the final seven minutes of the first half to lead at the break
with Craig Rogers scoring a superb free-kick before Owen Cordiner produced a composed finish past Ryan Goldston. Cordiner then turned provider for Fabrizio Murtas to make it 3-0 six minutes into the second half
Nick Grogan’s sweetly struck free-kick gave Buckley a glimmer of hope just after the hour mark
but there was to be no comeback from Asa Hamilton’s side.
The Bucks’ defeat allowed Llandudno to climb above them into fourth place with a 3-2 comeback victory over relegated Prestatyn Town at the Go Goodwins Stadium.
The contest was level at the break as Rob Parry’s opener for Prestatyn was cancelled out by a brilliant free-kick from Mark Cadwallader. Harvey Bennett gave Llandudno the lead early in the second half
but Parry netted his second of the afternoon to bring Prestatyn on terms in the 77th minute
Gareth Thomas’ side were searching for just their second point away from home all season
but were beaten in the 87th minute as Callum Stephens popped up with a winner for Llandudno.
Alfie Banning was then sent off for the hosts for a second bookable offence
but Jordan Hadaway’s side were able to hold on to claim all three points.
Flint Mountain ensured a top half finish in their first season in the JD Cymru North as they held third-place Holywell Town to a 1-1 draw at the Essity Stadium.
Jamie Breese rounded Mountain goalkeeper John Danby to slot Holywell ahead in the 33rd minute
but the hosts responded immediately as Jack Parry made no mistake by converting the rebound after Ben Lawrence’s audacious effort which initially hit the crossbar.
Last season’s champions Holywell have now gone winless in four league matches for the first time since 2021.
Guilsfield achieved a top half finish for the fourth consecutive JD Cymru North season as Jamie Hyne’s quickfire double earned a 2-1 win away to bottom-of-the-table Llay Welfare
Welfare top scorer Jonathan Collo put his side ahead four minutes into the second half
but two goals in as many minutes from Hyne shortly after the hour completed the comeback for the Guils
who finish the campaign with five consecutive victories.

If you’re driving to the Wrexham vs Stockport game this Saturday (March 22)
don’t forget to try the new Park & Ride at Ruthin Road
Last week, Wrexham Council announced plans to trial a new Park & Ride scheme for this season’s remaining Wrexham AFC home fixtures.
Buses will depart from Ruthin Road from 1pm every 20 minutes until 2.40pm, dropping off at Mold Road by the STōK Cae Ras stadium.
After the game, buses will depart from Central Road from 5pm every 20 minutes, and then from opposite the stadium on Mold Road from 6pm every 20 minutes.
The aim is to reduce congestion and offer convenient match-day parking for fans travelling by car,
The shuttle-bus service is being provided by Arriva North West & Wales, and the scheme is being backed by both the Welsh Government and Transport for Wales (TfW).
Ken Skates MS, Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales, said: “I’m delighted to see this pilot scheme being undertaken in Wrexham, and would urge fans travelling by car to give it a try.
“The crowds at the STōK Cae Ras are amazing, and as more people visit the stadium, we need to find ways to manage parking and congestion in the city.
“Match-days are hugely important, and I’m delighted that Wrexham Council and its partners are trialling this scheme, which could have huge benefits for both fans and local residents.”
Councillor David A Bithell, Deputy Leader of Wrexham Council and Lead Member for Housing & Climate Change, said: “With the continued success of Wrexham AFC and an ever-increasing fan base wanting to attend home games, we’ve been working hard behind the scenes to address the issues associated with the demand for match day parking.
“I’m pleased to announce that Wrexham Council has reached an agreement with Arriva North West & Wales to operate a dedicated shuttle bus service to complement the existing match-day parking facility that is available from our Ruthin Road site.
“Fans can benefit from free parking at the site, and will then be able to travel to and from the ground on a dedicated local bus service. Fares will be £2 for adults, £1.30 for children and young people, and concessionary passes will be accepted.
“This trial will commence with the next home game on Saturday, March 22 when Stockport County visit the STōK Cae Ras, and will run for the remainder of this season.”

A former car showroom in North Wales is set to become a Greggs bakery.
Acting on behalf of a private client, commercial agent Legat Owen secured the bakery for the site at Lon Parcwr, Ruthin in an off-market deal.
The 0.3 acre site, comprising a 2,442 sq ft building, will shortly be converted to become a bakery. Greggs plc have signed a 10 year lease on the prominent unit, which will include customer seating and a 20 space car park.
“Securing a high-profile tenant such as Greggs for this unit will make great use of this prominent site and benefit the local area. The off-market deal was completed quickly, securing the long-term future of the site and allowing for the tenant to submit their planning application for the use of the property.”
“The site aligns perfectly with our goals for expanding in North Wales, being near local amenities and a thriving industrial area.”
“Fit out has commenced with a target for a Spring 2025 opening.”
Huw Thomas, Cooke & Arkwright representing Greggs, said:
“Greggs are keen to secure additional new locations throughout North Wales to add to the recent new sites which we have acquired at Ruthin, Caernarfon, Prestatyn Retail Park, the Menai Centre in Bangor, Caernarfon Road in Bangor, and Wrexham.
“We are under offer on a handful of other sites and continue to look for new locations on busy high streets, retail parks, roadside, business parks and industrial estates, as part of Greggs plc’s UK wide expansion drive to open over 145 new locations in 2025. The site in Ruthin was identified as an ideal location for a drive-to format.”
