More than 1,000 meters of copper cable has been damaged
Copper cable thieves have struck again in St Neots
causing significant disruption to Openreach services in the Cambridgeshire town
It's the second time the vandals have targeted the town in the space of a month
ISP Review reported that the copper cables were likely stolen in the early hours of yesterday morning (March 17)
Openreach confirmed to the publication that the vandals behind the theft targeted the "same section” of the town as they struck the first time around
The incident occurred on a bridge to the south of the town
The company confirmed to DCD today (March 18) that more than 1,000 meters of underground cables were deliberately damaged overnight
“We are deeply disappointed that this community near St Neots is
facing the consequences of criminal acts targeting our network," said an Openreach spokesperson
"These attacks cause extensive disruption to local lives
threaten the safety of vulnerable individuals
and result in significant inconvenience for residents and businesses
“Our engineers are assessing the full extent of the damage
Repairs start this evening and will continue throughout the week
as work is restricted to overnight hours due to the location on the busy A428
We are committed to restoring service as quickly and safely as possible."
Copper theft is a common challenge for telecom companies such as BT subsidiary Openreach due to the high value of the material
Last year, Openreach suffered copper thefts in the New Forest, Hampshire, and County Tyrone
However, Essex Police last year jailed a gang responsible for the thefts of copper broadband and phone cables totaling an estimated £1 million ($1.30m) including indirect costs from Openreach across several counties in the UK
Openreach is currently in the process of deploying its fiber network across the UK
The company is aiming to cover 25 million premises by the end of next year
The company previously told DCD that it's worked hard to clamp down on the copper theft and attacks that have impacted its network. Openreach said its network is protected by an alarm system which notifies of any malicious cuts or theft. It has also marked its copper with forensic technology to track potential sales of stolen material
Data Centre Dynamics Ltd (DCD), 32-38 Saffron Hill, London, EC1N 8FH Email. [email protected]DCD is a subsidiary of InfraXmedia
The outage is likely to be impacting several hundred customers (the previous event impacted 380) and could potentially take several days to fully resolve
due to how it occurred between two high traffic roundabouts and a busy bridge crossing (requires temporary traffic lights and other safety measures)
the perpetrators of such crimes never have any regard for the harm they cause to locals
some of which are dependent upon related services
Feedback from the local area describes a nearby field where several hundred metres worth of core copper telecoms cable appears to have just been laid in parallel on the ground after being ripped up
This is not usually something that metal thieves would leave behind
although it’s possible they could have been rumbled while attempting to complete the theft
We’re still awaiting an update from Openreach
but local residents and network operators have been helping to provide additional details
The incident itself is known to have started at just after 2:30am yesterday morning and it will take all week to fully repair the damage
Some 1,000 metres of copper cable has been damaged
we are also hearing that Police recovered two stolen vehicles and around 500 metres of the cable from a nearby field
which is the same location as mentioned earlier
If they stole the previously replaced cable
then there’s also a good chance that it may have been forensically tagged
We’ve now had a full comment from Openreach on all this
facing the consequences of criminal acts targeting our network
more than 1,000 metres of underground cables were deliberately damaged
These attacks cause extensive disruption to local lives
Our engineers are assessing the full extent of the damage
We are committed to restoring service as quickly and safely as possible
We urge people to call 101 to report any suspicious activity around our network to the Police; if members of the public do believe a crime is in progress then they should dial 999.”
So they replaced it all again with copper rather than taking the opportunity to replace with fibre… and then it goes and happens again♂️
Openreach can’t simply replace one section of copper with fibre
as these are two largely separate networks with different end-user connections/setups
This is why the whole migration process for going from copper to FTTP is a gradual
It’s very hard to joint a copper cable to a fibre cable
How many weeks would you like customers to be out of service for while every single building has FTTP installed
this place is a paradise for copper cable thieves
The ducts are partially running through bushes and partially under the bridge
They can literally steal the cable without being spotted by anyone
Not surprised considering it’s home to a group of anti social locals
although they usually commit their crimes far away from where they live or stole those vehicles
so that side of things may have little to do with the local area
At least they have a raison etre and know what they want and what they are doing
If this were HMG there would be a band of dancing monkee celebrities who could be brought on to distract from and mitigate the bad PR

recently held a training day at the club for 15 NHS staff who are living with Parkinsons disease alongside some of their partners
The thoughts of Ed Kirkham are detailed below:
“We are all part of an online support group for healthcare professionals living and working with Parkinson’s disease but even after many years of being an online community
until this recent event we had never met in person
I’m a huge advocate of table tennis for people with Parkinson’s
it’s an essential part of my disease management
Despite being diagnosed 5 years ago aged 37
Having attended Parkinson’s training days with Mark before
I knew how well he understood is and how brilliantly he tailored his sessions to our needs
Mark handled the day brilliantly along with his assistant Phil
The hall was filled with admirable determination
We struggled to get everyone off the tables at the close of play and there is already talk of sending a group to the Parkinson’s table tennis world championships in Helsingborg in November
We would like to say a massive thank you to Mark
and St Neots Table Tennis Club for hosting us and helping some NHS staff learn to play and love table tennis”

Without the budget to buy near their Zone 3 home Zoshia and Will took the plunge to move 60 miles out of the capital

By moving 60 miles north Zoshia Lowndes and Will Plant have been able to swap a pokey and dark one-bedroom rented flat for a three-bedroom house of their own
have found that the compensations of homeownership in a small market town with great train links to the capital more than outweigh the wrench of leaving
Before the move Zoshia, a buyer for a cosmetics company, and Will, a council officer specialising in digital inclusion, were paying £1,350pcm to rent a modern flat in Turnpike Lane
Although their budget might have allowed them to buy a flat right out in the deepest London suburbs they didn’t fancy the idea of a compact home miles from anywhere
“We both come from Staffordshire with lots of green space and so outside space was really important to us,” says Will
The couple also wanted a home that was commutable to London and they favoured new build
“Neither of us are well versed in home renovations,” says Will
Beyond that the southern counties were their oyster and they began their research on Google, eventually spotting the Wintringham development just over a mile east of St Neots town centre in Cambridgeshire
Despite never having heard of St Neots before the couple decided to go and take a look
They were impressed by the houses being built by Urban&Civic
and they said goodbye to London in May 2023
Their property cost £360,000 and their monthly mortgage payments come in at £1,600pcm
“After we left we heard that the rent on our old flat had been put up to £1,650pcm
Zoshia now works from home two or three days per week
and spends the rest of the time in her London office
The train journey from St Neots takes 50 minutes
The move has opened up a new lifestyle to the couple
who they bought a couple of months after moving
“It feels a lot safer as a woman to go running alone
Making friends on a new development has proved natural
Wintringham will eventually include 2,800 new homes
London leaver: 'Our friends in Devon are like family and they all live close by'
London leaver: 'I moved 22 times in 17 years in London
it's calming mooring my boat in Ware'
London leaver: 'I would never have written a book if I was stuck in Wimbledon'
“I think moving has made us a little bit more sociable,” says Will
“There is a sense that everyone is in the same boat and a new community is being built
And the couple are also enthusiastic about picturesque St Neots with its riverside festivals
Will admits he does miss London’s museums and galleries
but Zoshia’s commute means she has plenty of opportunity to keep up with her London friends
“I think that I was going off London for a few months before we moved,” she says
“It doesn’t feel like I am missing out on anything.”

St Neots site has had a comprehensive refurb
may not be big enough to replicate his award-winning nearby Childerley Gate Service Station
but it takes inspiration from that forecourt
with the shop having a cosy yet comprehensive feel
sits on the main road in the middle of the town
As we pull up we find Tom chatting to a technician working on an AdBlue pump
fixing a teething problem the likes of which will be familiar to anyone who has undertaken such major works
a specialist forecourt electrician who’s “the best in the business”
fixing issues other sparkies might struggle with
This level of detail sets the tone for our conversation
Tom explaining that when the new hardstanding was poured at St Ives
the manholes and tank fill-points were finished with small
localised concrete surrounds laid around them so that if any future issues require them to be dug out
Tom chose a local concrete firm for this job
a principle that runs through many of the decisions made when choosing shop suppliers
We work with local bakeries for fresh bread every day
sandwich fillings come from another local family business that no one else in the area is using for their food to go
It’s the same with cakes: we have them delivered in every two days
the sausages and bacon come from a butcher rather than a wholesaler
We’re really trying to drive that quality.”
Tom has managed to fit a lot in without making it feel cramped
That might have something to do with the tasteful décor
with its blue panelling around the till point and flagstone floor finishes
the subtle LED strip lights making one wonder how we used to deal with the industrial starkness that fluorescent tubes once gave shops
Finishes are high-end and provide a pleasant ambiance
but St Neots feels high-end and distinctive
and the philosophy behind Childerley is clearly transferrable to smaller locations
but not necessarily sell goods at a premium price,” Tom explains
the hand car wash operating to the rear of St Neots on the day of our visit doesn’t quite gel with the overall Highland philosophy
but Tom explains the lease on this runs out within a month
but it’s not what we’re going for here.” He adds
that he was happy extend the car wash company’s lease by a month so they could find a new site and use up all their chemicals
which seems like a good way of doing business
Phase two of the development will see that area of the forecourt redeveloped and a new jet wash bay installed
“We thought the days of people wanting to wash their own cars were gone”
Tom says “but our jet washes are really popular
The trade we’ve hit at Childerley Gate exceeded what we expected
That’s given us confidence to go back to it – if it’s premium equipment with non-harmful chemicals and the snow foam that everyone likes.”
Branded shop fascia is to be installed imminently
Also set for a makeover is the rollover car wash
which Tom says Highand Group will renew partly as it’s already in situ so planning isn’t needed – though even here
as he explains that as good as jet washes are
“An elderly person who doesn’t want to get out of their car and do it themselves for example – a rollover perfect for them.”
“We’re going to put a brand new Adriateh rollover in – really high end
It’s a big family firm from Croatia and they’re petrol heads; they really care about cars.”
after the five-year stint as a carpenter that he embarked on after leaving school
beginning his forecourt career on the shop floor as a sales assistant
before steadily taking on more senior roles
“I’ve always been told that if you want to run a business
Dad’s motto is ‘don’t ask anyone to do something you wouldn’t do yourself.’ At the time I did get it
Given this grass-roots grounding, it’s unsurprising that Tom is alert to the industry’s challenges, and our conversation soon turns to tougher topics, prompted by the recent break-in at his forecourt near Royston
“There’s a big problem with the abuse frontline retail staff can get
Just this morning I went to one of my sites
and one of the cashiers was in the kitchen crying
large male in his 40s” had subjected the cashier to significant threats and abuse
but this was a fully grown male to a young female
adding that his shops are never single-manned during the day
and that he’s considering implementing 24-hour opening with night-hatch service to prevent break-ins
despite this not necessarily being commercially justified
relaying another incident that saw customers mindlessly damage and steal stock
while adding that he has had to replace one site’s bathroom fittings twice within the last year due to vandalism
His honesty about this challenging aspect of the sector seems all the more necessary given data from the Association of Convenience Stores indicate retail workers suffered 1.2 million incidents of abuse in the last 12 months
Tom is now halfway to operating the 10 forecourts he aims to be running by the time he turns 40
giving him seven years – a target that seems reasonable as there might be a sixth site in the offing if things go the way he thinks they might
Flagstone floor finishes are well chosen; bakery will sit to the left of coffee station
And while it might be easier to achieve 10 forecourts more quickly by going down the commission-operator route
that doesn’t fit in with the business model he’s committed to building
and that’s a lot – we have well over 100 staff – but having control over the quality
the customer service and the whole image of the site is what we want
“The brand I’m trying to build and the quality of forecourts I’m trying to build
I need to make sure that every forecourt I buy fits that mould
and that every forecourt I build is an improvement on the last.”
Given his eye for detail and enthusiasm for the sector
not to mention the affinity he clearly has for the people who work with him
it’d take a brave man to bet against Tom achieving those goals
