Brierley – who has been acting as Salford’s captain since Kallum Watkins’ departure for Leeds Rhinos at the start of last month – missed last week’s home defeat against Leigh Leopards due to his ear infection. Head coach Rowley revealed in the build-up to Magic that the full-back was one of a number of players in his squad who had been suffering with illness for a few weeks, and that the illness had turned into the ear infection. The Scotland international had been expected to return at St James’ Park though, where the Red Devils lost 54-0 to Super League leaders Hull KR on Saturday evening. Post-match in the North East, Rowley was asked about his stand-in skipper’s absence, and revealed he had been in the team until 7pm last night when confirmation was received that UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) hadn’t approved his inclusion. Rowley explained: “He (Brierley) was bleeding from his ears last week, so he’s had to have some medication, and we’ve followed the protocols with UKAD. “It (the medication) is one of those that you need clearance for, and they’ve not given us clearance. “We’ll get it in two days, which isn’t really helpful.” Salford were also without both Chris Hankinson and Joe Mellor against the Robins on Saturday. Hankinson hasn’t featured since April 4, while Mellor had struggled with an issue in the build-up to Magic. Rowley detailed: “He (Hankinson) has had a shoulder injury for some while now, and he was touch and go. “It was a precautionary route (not to select him) after seeing the specialist. (We got told) it would be better not to take the risk on this occasion because if he got a couple more weeks (rest), it would be good for the rest of the year as opposed to a gamble. “Our squad’s small enough without taking that sort of risk, so as tempting as it is to get your best players on the field, we have to be brave enough to make those decisions. “(Losing Mellor) was a huge hit to the team. Joe got in an unfortunate position last week in a tackle against Leigh, and he got some damage to his ankle. “We’re hopeful he’ll be back for the next game, but it’ll all play out over the next week and we’ll have a better idea on that.” © Planet Sport Limited 2025 • All Rights Reserved but was proud of the fans and staff for all the support they have given the team all season halving the deficit before the break through a powerful header by Cole Stockton then an accurately placed shot by Hakeeb Adelakun in the second half However it was not enough to see the side into the play-offs as Salford finished eighth in the final league standings “You were just hoping that history was going to repeat itself with that last minute goal and make it 3-2 One thing you can say is that every single one of us has put our heart and soul into this season “My players have given me everything With all that has gone against us and still we stand here with you very close at the end [to the play-offs] “I can’t ask anymore from the fans supporting this football club and the owners as well Everybody behind the scenes has given us the opportunity to be successful I’ll never forget the moment on Tuesday night that we got beat and the fans were still singing the players\' names We\'ve drawn away games and been beat and the fans are still there and have never left our side “We thank you from the bottom of our hearts and we apologise for not giving you the end of the season that everyone really wanted.” SALFORD RED DEVILS coach Paul Rowley was philosophical after his side went down 54-0 to Hull KR at Magic Weekend. After trailing 24-0 at half-time, Salford never looked like causing Rovers any issues – and 26 points for Arthur Mourgue proved that. Rowley said: “Hull KR are a great side and they are in a rich vein of form. “We had late disruption with Chris Hankinson and Ryan Brierley at 7 o’clock last night so there was a bit of a reshuffle. “It was another tough day at the office but the players kept battling towards the end. “Ryan was bleeding from his ear last week so he had to have some medicine and we followed the protocols but you need clearance for it and he wasn’t given it. “He will be given the clearance in two days which isn’t very helpful.” Rowley, however, was proud of his Red Devils players. “There were some positive things in there,” he said. “But we are not doing enough things consistently which is understandable with players coming and going. “It’s generally those sorts of processes that have let us down. We are not the biggest of teams either but our boys keep fighting.” when the Ammies take on Carlisle United in Sky Bet League Two (KO 15.00) The Ammies head into game 46 of the league campaign knowing that a win on Saturday would guarantee a spot in the play-offs that play-off place has not yet been secured and high concentration levels will be needed if Salford are to succeed this weekend our approach has been to over-emphasise that we still have a job to do We have been chasing the pack for the last few weeks and now we’re in there it is all about keeping that level of performance and keeping the consistency levels up at training “When it comes to this stage of the season when you have got stuff to play for you don’t need to say much because the lads know themselves of the importance of these games and making sure that they are in the best physical condition "The one message that we have been saying all week though is that while Carlisle may have been relegated a professional football match is never easy professional football players want to win matches they will want to spoil the chances of us getting into the play-offs and to concentrate on the job in hand.” The Ammies make their way up to Cumbria this weekend following an excellent 4-1 win over fellow play-off chasers Colchester United last Saturday at the Peninsula Stadium a result which now means Salford have lost just one of their last nine matches played Salford’s form away from Moor Lane also remains strong with the Ammies having won four and drawn two in their last six matches played on their travels the last time these two sides met one another was back in November for the reverse fixture at the Peninsula Stadium when an 88th minute goal from Carlisle substitute Ben Barclay gave the visitors all three points that afternoon Since that positive result for the Cumbrians there has been a change of manager at the club with Mark Hughes replacing Mike Williamson in February Despite a recent unbeaten run for our hosts in the league Carlisle had their relegation from the Football League confirmed last weekend following a 3-2 defeat at Cheltenham Town.  Mark Hughes’ side were four games without defeat including three wins Carlisle are also currently four games undefeated at home including a 3-2 win over title-chasing Port Vale in their previous match played at Brunton Park The two clubs have now met on eight occasions since the Ammies won promotion to League Two in 2019 with Carlisle leading the head-to-head with four victories to Salford’s two One of those wins for Salford though did occur the last time we visited Carlisle back in April 2023 in a fixture which also had play-off ramifications at the time That day Neil Wood’s Ammies all-but guaranteed a place in the 2022-23 play-offs thanks to a dramatic 3-2 win in Cumbria with Luke Bolton scoring the winner in the 88th minute Karl Robinson was boosted by the returns of Curtis Tilt Conor McAleny and Liam Shephard last weekend after suspension and injuries Kylian Kouassi and Frankie Okoronkwo are unavailable to the Ammies We already have one of our highest away followings in League Two heading up to Brunton Park and you can still join that number with admission available on the day at the away ticket office *You can purchase a maximum of 2 Family Junior tickets per Adult ticket or 1 Family Junior ticket per Senior ticket Any Junior tickets purchased above this limit are charged at the relevant full Junior price **Juniors under 14 must be accompanied by a responsible parent/guardian over 18 there are a number of ways you can keep up with the game from afar.. Swift back-to-back goals by Stephen Wearne and Matthew Dennis in the first half were enough to frustrate the Ammies, despite goals by Cole Stockton and Hakeeb Adelakun to level the score. Inside five minutes, the Ammies had an opportunity from distance. Tyrese Fornah and Adelakun combined on the left hand-side before Fornah laid the ball for Luke Garbutt and he drilled his effort just wide of the near post. Liam Shephard intercepted a Carlisle pass and launched the Ammies into a counterattack by playing it to Haji Mnoga charging down the right and combined with Adelakun as the latter crossed the ball in for the unmarked Stockton at the back post to shoot from close range but was denied by Gabe Breeze. Sean Fusire charged down the right as Carlisle broke for a counterattack just after the 15-minute mark and cut the ball back for Wearne waiting in the middle as he tapped the ball past Matty Young to take the lead for the home side. Minutes later, Carlisle extended their lead to two after Jack Ellis found Dennis in the box, and he poked the ball past Young. With 10 minutes to go in the first half, Salford managed to pull one back. Ben Woodburn whipped in a pinpoint cross for Stockton to powerfully head past Breeze to mark his fifth goal in the last five away games. Woodburn won the ball on the halfway line from Kadeem Harris in added time of the first half and threaded the ball through for Stockton, but his shot was tipped over by Breeze. Just before the hour mark, Callum Whelan received the ball on the left and weaved his way past the Ammies defence and he opened up his body to take the shot, but Curtis Tilt charged in with a big block. Moments later, Salford got their equaliser in elegant fashion. Adelakun cut inside from the left and played the ball to Nmai in the box before he played it back to Adelakun who made space for himself to accurately place his shot in the bottom left corner. The visitors almost found a winner as Fornah carried the ball into the opposition half and found Woodburn on the right before he lifted the ball in for Stockton to try to head it in again, but the shot went just over. Nmai was fouled by Terell Thomas on the edge of the box which led to a free-kick opportunity for Woodburn. He lined up but played it short to Adelakun to shoot from range, but the ball went just wide. In the 85th minute, the ball bobbled inside the box and into a dangerous area as Georgie Kelly went one-on-one with Young but the Salford shot stopper made himself big and denied the home side from nicking a winner.  who finds Booth to race away down the wing who feeds it back to Hiku who then passes to Mourgue who races over to score his second!Mourgue the adds the two May slices through Salford's defence and races away to draw the Salford fullback May finds Mourgue and the fullback gets a deserved try Great work from Leyland as he weaves and powers towards the line to get his hands free and find Litten for the Robins' number 9 strolls over to score Mourgue safely takes in Nikorima's bomb and goes to ground looking for a half break The fullback is caught with a Salford second effort and it's a Robins' penalty Jez Litten comes on for Elliot Minchella during the break in play Eribe Doro and Jack Brown are replaced by Sauaso Sue and Sam Luckley.Great stints lads!🔵 36 - Reports in Australia emerged at the beginning of the week suggesting that the Roosters, and specifically their chairman, Nick Politis, were looking at saving the troubled Red Devils amidst continued financial uncertainty for the Super League club. Their new owners are believed to be open to selling for the right price despite only taking charge mere months ago. They have twice failed to pay Salford’s players on time – though they did meet payroll with no issues for April. But Love Rugby League has spoke to sources on both sides of the world, who have insisted that there would likely be no deal whatsoever should Super League and its clubs decide against potential investment into the competition from the NRL. The Roosters would only consider a seismic takeover of Salford if the NRL had full control of Super League in terms of decision-making. There is also speculation they would look to rebrand the club as Manchester Roosters. That has been floated as an option, but is by no means a guarantee, and would depend on a number of other factors. But it has been made abundantly clear that the Roosters would only look at Salford as a viable investment option if there was a wider deal between the two competitions. Without that, a takeover is off the table. Talks remain ongoing in that regard, with the NRL looking to revitalise British rugby league. They are looking at either purchasing a 33 per cent stake in Super League as it stands – or a more revolutionary option of creating a new NRL Europe entity. Furthermore, Love Rugby League has been told of two more NRL teams who are internally discussing the prospect of taking on a struggling Super League club. But like the Roosters, those clubs are waiting to see what happens in terms of a deal between the two competitions. 8,128 Brunton Park crowd chorused 'Mark Hughes' blue and white army' at the end of their 46th game of the 2024/25 campaign at Brunton Park - where the result cost visitors Salford a play-off place Carlisle scored twice in two first-half minutes through Stephen Wearne and Matt Dennis to take control before Cole Stockton pulled one back before the break Hakeeb Adelakun levelled in the second half but Karl Robinson's side could not find the winner they needed to finish in the play-off places as they were overtaken by Chesterfield who claimed seventh place on the last day Carlisle's second bottom finish saw them on 42 points seven adrift in the relegation places behind third-bottom Newport County as the National League now beckons - as well as some major decisions including whether Hughes will stay as head coach The United boss named an unchanged XI for the last game of 2024/25 sticking with the side that started at Cheltenham Town on the day United were relegated the previous weekend Two changes to the substitutes saw teenager Sam Hetherington given a chance with Callum Guy also returning to the squad with Josh Vela and Joe Bevan out of the 18 had his name chanted by fans at the last game of the season (Image: Ben Holmes) Salford named an unchanged team and bench as they sought the result to seal their play-off place United began brightly with Sean Fusire shooting just over from 20 yards after just a minute with Luke Garbutt going close with an attempt from outside the box and Kelly N'Mai denied by a block The visitors looked set to score on 12 minutes when Adelakun's cross reached ex-Blues striker Stockton at the far post but Gabe Breeze saved superbly at close range And four minutes later United hit the Ammies with a double Georgie Kelly found Fusire on the right and when the loanee cut it back from the byline Wearne arrived to sidefoot his finish across keeper Matthew Young And a minute later it was two - Jack Ellis this time the provider with some excellent work in the box before Dennis arrived to bury his cross at close range The double salvo had home fans in good voice as Carlisle went in search of more goals with manager Karl Robinson (Image: Ben Holmes) Salford were forced into a first-half change with Ossama Ashley replaced on 25 minutes by Lewis Warrington But they then hit back when Stockton was fouled and as Ben Woodburn fired the free-kick in from the right the striker escaped defensive attention to power a header inside the wrongfooted Breeze's near post to make it 2-1 An Aaron Hayden error almost then let Stockton in again but Terell Thomas came across to reprieve his fellow centre-back Fusire almost played in Kelly for Carlisle in first-half added time while Kadeem Harris did some dogged defensive work to prevent Salford making too many inroads Breeze tipped a Stockton shot over in the half's dying seconds The visitors made another change at the break as Josh Austerfield replaced Garbutt - and they almost levelled immediately after the restart Woodburn fed to the right of goal but Breeze saving his driven shot Salford continued to look for a leveller but Stockton was twice caught offside in good positions and then Breeze denied N'Mai Matt Dennis retrieves the ball after making it 2-0 to Carlisle (Image: Ben Holmes) Callum Whelan went close for Carlisle as he dribbled into the box...but then the visitors got their second got it back on the left and Carlisle were unable to stop him linking with N'Mai before stroking the ball inside the left-hand post Elliot Embleton and Joe Hugill replacing Fusire and Dennis But Salford were now very much on the scent of the win that would get them into the play-offs Stockton heading a cross over and N'Mai's dangerous cross cleared by Harper Paul Dummett on for his home debut and Callum Guy also introduced the latter getting a very warm send-off on what may have been his Blues swansong Embleton went close for Carlisle with a curling shot ten minutes from time and Kelly then had a great chance to win it but was denied by keeper Young when clean through after he broke onto an Ellis cross Cameron Harper then failed to pick out Hugill from a good position as Carlisle looked for a late third There were regular chants of 'Mark Hughes' blue and white army' from home fans as the game approached the end Dummett making a good defensive header to deny Salford a 90th-minute winner Georgie Kelly controls a high ball (Image: Ben Holmes) Ben Barclay came in in the dying minutes as things finished 2-2 Salford's players falling to their haunches as their play-off dreams were dashed Carlisle's players and staff then performed a lap of appreciation to thank fans - who again responded with a sustained chant of 'Mark Hughes' blue and white army' The head coach acknowledged the support before heading down the tunnel with a huge period of decision-making now facing the relegated Blues That is how the Knicks stole the first game of the ‘Manchester Roosters’ Salford‘s financial plight has been ongoing since November 2024 and has heavily impacted their abilities to perform on-field s far this season Tim Lafai (Retirement) and Kallum Watkins (Leeds Rhinos) have all had to be sold or released to generate much-needed cash For the first time since their takeover by a Swiss consortium went through at the beginning of this year players and staff received their wages on time this month But with no real end in sight to their troubles, and the club’s Super League status being at risk due to an already-low IMG score the future doesn’t exactly look bright LRL RECOMMENDS: Andrew Johns ‘loses it’ over NRL sin-binning extravaganza Talk of the NRL buying into Super League has raged on long before the Red Devils’ plight came to fruition then Salford could be taken over by the 15-time champion Roosters according to leading NRL reporter Michael Chammas Speaking on the ‘100% Footy‘ show Down Under he explained: “I can tell you that Nick Politis (Roosters chairman) and Sydney Roosters have had some conversations with the NRL “They like the point of the NRL buying into it (Super League) to the point where they’ve actually discussed the possibility that if the NRL do get involved they (the Roosters) want to look at buying a team “There’s been talks before about London and whether or not they’d be for sale but the team I’m hearing at the moment are Salford “I hear the Roosters are eyeing Salford and looking at potentially rebranding them as the ‘Manchester Roosters’ if the NRL does take control of Super League “We know what they’re doing at the moment in LA and that wouldn’t be in the same realm as this Salford at the moment are struggling financially “They (the Roosters) think because it (Salford) is close to Manchester rebrand the team and then you have that pathway for players to come from England straight into the Roosters’ system LRL RECOMMENDS: How Super League will raise money for MND community at Magic Weekend Super League leaders Hull KR scored nine tries en route to a 54-0 Magic Weekend drubbing of troubled Salford Red Devils at St James' Park in Newcastle. The first half saw Hull KR score four times through Dean Hadley, Geordie Sam Luckley - who celebrated like Alan Shearer again at St James' Park, as he did playing for Salford in 2022 - Pita Hiku and Jez Litten for a 24-0 half-time lead. Into the second period, James Batchelor, Noah Booth (on debut), Litten and Arthur Mourgue (two) added further tries in an overwhelmingly one-sided contest. Salford, who remain in financial disarray and have used some 46 players so far this season, showed spirit but were never a match on the day. Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player Rovers thought they had the opening points of the contest less than two minutes in when James Batchelor was awarded a try but a successful captain's challenge by Salford's Jack Ormondroyd proved Batchelor had momentarily knocked on before regathering Hull KR lost Oliver Gildart to a worrying knee injury shortly after but they did have the lead on nine minutes through Hadley from close range Salford's immediate response was heartening as full-back Jayden Nikorima made a rip-roaring break up the middle of the match but was just stopped by a despairing Mikey Lewis tap-tackle Nikorima was soon off for a HIA after promising Salford openings came to nothing while Hull KR displayed their ruthless nature up the other end punishing Salford's profligacy as Luckley got in for a try celebrating like Alan Shearer at St James' Park as he did when a Salford player in 2022 while a fourth followed within moments: superb feet and pace from Lewis saw him break up the pitch and pass on Litten to finish leaving the half-time score a daunting 24-0 Salford's Nathan Connell knocked on over the try-line and Hull KR were soon over again by contrast: Batchelor finishing in the corner but still saw Rovers fire in for more scores: Booth acrobatically flying over in the corner and Mourgue's pace and guile proving too much for the stretched Red Devils We take home the win ✅#UpTheRobins🔴⚪️ pic.twitter.com/HXGB4SCQgy Hull KR head coach Willie Peters told Sky Sports...
